Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)
The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.
The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?
Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!
In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
Re: New Council
Hi - I know very little about this matter actually - I just found out about it and thought that it should be mentioned on the relevant Wikipedia articles! I'd perhaps hold off creating a new article for the new district/council until it's actually certain to happen. I think the Your New Council website is our best source of information/official news on this. Thanks. Sumorsǣte (talk) 14:00, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Firstly, thank you for your comprehensive GA review of the above. Noting that User:No Swan So Fine had been unable to respond to comments on their last GA nomination, and having had the pleasure of working with them in the past, I have taken the liberty of responding myself. However, I have been rather confused by the transclusion, such that my comments don't appear on the article Talkpage but do on the transcluded Talkpage. I do hope that this doesn't cause a problem. Thanks and regards. KJP1 (talk) 18:54, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
- NSSF has indicated he is quite content with my picking this up. Is there anything further I can do to assist the GA review? KJP1 (talk) 17:17, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

disambig needed
Hello there! Wondering why you added a "disambig needed" to Trelawney on Tre, Pol and Pen page. It does lead to a disambiguation page for people and places called Trelawney, but there's no page dedicated to Trelawney as a surname. Seems like a good link to me? Happy wikiing!! -- A L T E R C A R I 19:29, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Fair enough I have removed it but I suppose I was hoping there was a Trelawney (surname) or similar page, to separate it from places, those in fiction etc.— Rod talk 19:33, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi,
Today I added a few lines about the bitter 1873 coal miners' strike in my home state of Ohio. I put the lines under the 1870
heading. I edited your page because it was one of the few that took in the history of union organizing in the mines.
The last discussion of the 1873 labor action was in 1951, in the Youngstown Vindicator. I thought it was time to again reveal this history.
I am a retired teacher and former building rep (shop steward) with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, Local #3, AFL-CIO. I also publish Italian American history as a contributing writer in English at http://www.lagazzettaitaliana.com/.
The 1873 Strike brought the first Italians into the Mahoning Valley, where I was born.

Milborne Port
Thanks for tidying up my sentence. There should be a reference in Hansard, but I couldn't find it. I was puzzled if the item in the Australian paper was a misspelling of Melbourne. I've noted you before ; You improved some stuff I put in about the Airbus transport : Flint - Portbury - Pauillac. As you are interested in Parishes, etc., could you address a problem I've noticed ? Some historic county councils were abolished in 1974, and a few people are trying hard to purge every mention of these names from Wikipedia.78.150.141.142 (talk) 17:01, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

I have left some comments on the WSMR page, but one or two points are better said here, I think.
First, you are being very courteous, and I am grateful. This is a quality not often found on Wikipedia.
Second, in carefully seeking comments and support from anyone and everyone, I appreciate that you are anxious to create support for the GA status. If there is a negative to this, it is that you may get several suggested (but as yet non-specific) changes at the same time as you are asking people to support the final result of implementing them -- which they can't see yet, of course. My own inclination would have been to make the edits now and then say to everyone "Is this ok?" (I was temped myself to wade in myself and make some edits now. However I defer to you as you have done much more recent work than I have on the page.)
Whatever, good luck and congratulations on your work.
PS "Rod" and "Rodw" are both you, I presume. That threw me a bit last night when I got your first message.
Afterbrunel (talk) 10:32, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
- Dear Rod
I take my hat off to you for your editfest, thank you.
You commented at one point that you didn't know how to edit standard bibliography items such as Griffiths, Roger; Smith, Paul (1999). The Directory of British Engine Sheds and Principal Locomotive Servicing Points: 1 Southern England, the Midlands, East Anglia and Wales. OPC Railprint. ISBN 978-0-86093-542-1. OCLC 59458015. and Butt, R. V. J. (October 1995). The Directory of Railway Stations: details every public and private passenger station, halt, platform and stopping place, past and present (1st ed.). Sparkford: Patrick Stephens Ltd. ISBN 978-1-85260-508-7. OCLC 60251199. OL 11956311M.. They are both templates (the curly brackets suggest this). You can edit them by keying in template:Griffiths-Sheds1 at top right of screen, then hitting the edit option, as you would for any article. You can then edit it at will. Just a word of caution, however, these templates are shortcuts for widely used standard works so people don't have to write out or copy and paste book data time and again and so Wikipedia moves towards standard refs. Therefore any change you make will immediately affect a lot of articles, not just one. In this case you could safely overwrite the ISBN number with the international version, then test it after you've saved it.
All that said, neither you nor I can edit Butt, R. V. J. (October 1995). The Directory of Railway Stations: details every public and private passenger station, halt, platform and stopping place, past and present (1st ed.). Sparkford: Patrick Stephens Ltd. ISBN 978-1-85260-508-7. OCLC 60251199. OL 11956311M. because it is protected (thousands of articles use it) so you'll need to ask someone higher up the food chain than me. To save you having to look it up Butt's long ISBN is 9781852605087. I've changed the Griffiths ISBN.
I've sympathetically tweaked the opening paras and added to the closing narrative about the company's final months. I haven't sought to change any meanings, because I think you'd got it right.
I see that in Afterbrunel you've found a civil, constructive and specific guide. Well done, as he says, such people aren't as common in they should be in the Wikiworld.
Best wishes.

- The Butt template {{Butt-Stations}} is only semi-protected, so I think you both (Rodw and DavidAHull) should be able to edit it as you are both extended confirmed users? Harrias talk 13:12, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- Sound advice, thank you. I've changed the ISBN in the Butt template to the long format.
- Thanks both for your advice and edits on this while I've been at work. All isbns now appear up to date 13 digit versions. I think we are getting there - just need to provide a citation for Luxborough Road never having fare-paying passengers (or remove it if we can't source it.— Rod talk 19:55, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- I'll do that. Dave DavidAHull (talk) 22:35, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- Done. I see a critical obstacle to getting GA status, no author has used Jones' "The Brendon Hills Iron Mines and the West Somerset Railway". I've tried to get hold of a copy to no avail, until today, when it has become available on Amazon for £50 plus postage. I could go to York University Library to study a copy (I wonder if they'd let me in, I graduated there in 1971!) but its over the Pennines and would cost me £50 plus postage to get there and back and I'm not sure what I could do in a day. I'm afraid that at the moment I can't lay my hands on £50 plus postage; if it's still available in February I should be able to. Dave DavidAHull (talk) 23:57, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- Don't spend your money on it or make a special trip. You could always apply for a WikimediaUK small grant for the cost of the book, but it is available from Libraries West so I have placed a reservation which will get it sent to my local library in about a week.— Rod talk 06:57, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
- It's worth noting that Good article criteria do not require an article to be comprehensive. So although a missing source like that is detrimental to the article in general, and certainly to attaining FA status, it is unlikely to be a major stumbling block for GA. - Well done Rodw for setting wheels in motion to get a copy of Jones. Thank you Harrias for advice about GA and comprehensiveness. Now for rather a downer. There are seven works which appear in the list of refs without page numbers, some with several instances. I have none of the works I'm afraid. I can't see any shortcut other than for people to wade through the works in question finding and recording the relevant pages. The works are Bodman 2012, Carter 1959, Mitchell & Smith 1990, Thomas 1966, Maggs 2013, Butt 1995 (I can go to Crosby library and look that up if no-one has easier access) and Bradshaw 2011. Owt else I can do? Kind regards to all, Dave DavidAHull (talk) 19:43, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
- I don't have any of these either. The Maggs one is available full text on google books but appears to be an ebook without page numbers. I think some of them might be in my local library but Geof Sheppard, Andy Dingley, Britmax, Afterbrunel or someone from Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains might be able to help?— Rod talk 20:00, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

- I've got what are probably the three best known works on this (the two Sellicks, Madge and Jones). Jones though is such an epic tome that it tends to stop one from simply diving into the article, for the sheer scale of the topic. All I've managed to do as a result was to start identifying some of the background topics that need to be in place (hence the navbox). An article based on Sellick alone would not meet the depth of coverage that really should be here. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:17, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
- I've dealt with the Maggs ref by "splitting" it. The citation now links directly to the eBook extract, so if you read the relevant para on passenger trains and click on the Maggs ref it takes you to the extract itself. I've therefore taken the link to the eBook out of the bibliography, leaving is as a "pure" paper book, which I've moved to Further reading. I hope this makes sense! It deals with the non-existent ISBN, the confusion between paper and e source and the lack of page number. One down, umpteen to go! Rodw, I like your ASIN initiative, I've not seen that done before. - I had started adding notes re locos from Jones. NB current Ref 94 is a wikilink to "Brendon Hill & I don't understand what it is supposed to be referencing.— Rod talk 12:49, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- The names and numbers in the "main line" table don't match those in Jones book which includes a Sirdar class 0-4-0 Number 702 by Kerr, Stuart & Co. He also includes trials locos.— Rod talk 13:11, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- I couldn't make sense of ref 94 either, so I've substituted a link to NLoS maps (do you think we should add a Note to users how to get the best out of NLoS overlays?) please check it now makes sense and comment on my note question.
- It had become ref 96. I have removed the sfn template - perhaps it was intended to be a station link one (but I have never used that). I have also never used NLOS maps so I don't really know about that one.— Rod talk 15:15, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- I had no hand in the tables of locos until this morning when I linked them to images. They may correspond to refs in the body of the text, but I haven't looked. I reckon Jones trumps anything unreferenced, so I support you making any changes. On the standard gauge locos table I can't find owt about the supposed Neilsen loco dating from 1861. If you and Jones can't I suggest you bin it. Your 2' gauge note about Sirdar seems fine, it doesn't contradict what's already there, in fact the £18 price tag confirms the accompanying narrative. I'm going to have a go at a mini-biography for Morgan Morgans based on Sellick. Kind regards, Dave DavidAHull (talk) 15:00, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- OK I will look further when I have time.— Rod talk 15:15, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- I've put the spurious "link" to Brendon Hill station right, it was my typo, I keyed "sfn" instead of "rws". I warmly commend the NLoS maps to you, they enable you to look at a range of OS maps going back to the 1800s and switch between them and current images by sliding a blue blob at the bottom left corner of the screen. The are a fabulous resource. Finally, my copy of Jones has arrived, I aim to pick it up tomorrow. Would you like to divvy up working through it? Dave DavidAHull (talk) 17:48, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks - I thought it might be a mis formed Template:Stnlnk. Great stuff re Jones. I've skim read the 1st hundred pages or so & was going to do the early explorations in the Mining on the Brendon Hills article as a 1st step. As ever there are several competing priorities.— Rod talk 17:51, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- I've done a first edition of a biography for Morgan Morgans, but getting stuck into Jones is more my cup of tea. When I've had a look at it I'll suggest how we might tackle it. That won't be before tomorrow night, as Tuesday is grandadding day. Dave DavidAHull (talk) 22:38, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Events conspired against me yesterday, but I've now got my hands on Jones. Wow! I'm also in touch with one of Morgan Morgans' descendants so I hope to be able to flesh his biography out a bit in due course. Dave DavidAHull (talk) 16:13, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- Glad to see your start on the mines article. One of us needs to add a section on Bearland Wood and add it to the route diagram. I volunteer to do both, but don't want to tread on your toes. In the light of what I've read in Jones and found through genealogical sources I need to revisit Morgan Morgans' bibliography. You said you weren't into doing them, so I volunteer; I've been pleasantly surprised how interesting it has been doing MM and will have a go at others, unless you want to. How do you suggest we divvy up the rest of what Jones reveals? I suggest selecting some chapters each is a clear way forward, but would welcome better ideas. Dave DavidAHull (talk) 14:49, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- You will not be treading on my toes. I have so much to do at work wp hardly gets a look in at the moment. Do what you want & when I get some time I will help out where I can. — Rod talk 18:50, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- I've had a fair old bash at West Somerset Mineral Railway and its constituent stations. I think WSMR needs a fresh pair of eyes as I suspect repetition has snuck in. I think there may be a case for an extra section on accidents. I also suspect it might be an idea to break sections up. I've spent so long looking at it I can no longer see the wood for the trees. Tomorrow is grandadding day, so later in the week I'll have a go at Mining on the Brendon Hills as Jones will help me flesh out some pits and add others. Finally (?) I'll have another go at Morgan Morgans' biography when his 3GtGrandaughter gets back to me with promised material. I've enjoyed it, but am getting stale. I'll refresh with James (4) tomorrow and come back rarin' to go. Cheers, Dave DavidAHull (talk) 21:45, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for all your brilliant work on this. I think it is looking a lot better. I've gone through & tweaked a few references & merged some one sentence paragraphs, but I don't think there is much more needed before a GA nomination. One thing that will annoy some reviewers are the references in the lead - although not "banned" some would argue that ever fact in the lead should be in the main body of the text, with citations there so do not need to be repeated in the lead. - might be worth checking?— Rod talk 21:36, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you, I'm glad it's on the up. I'll check the lead and refs against the body of the article. One thing bewilders me in the talk page, how on earth can this article be said not have enough in-line citations?? Are ampersands in refs taboo? If so, I need to know as I routinely use lists like what I did at school, eg "pp. 3, 12, 33 & 47" on the same theme is "opposite p. 47" not needed for photos? Great if it is! Someone has commented adversly on the style of sources. I'd stand my ground on this, I think they are consistent and meticulous: author, title, year, publisher and ISBN, with twiddly bits such as edition and oclc as situations warrant. Kind regards, Dave DavidAHull (talk) 21:58, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think ampersands and opposite are banned in citations, but when using sfn they seem to give an error (one of the many tools I have installed, I can't remember which one, flags these as incorrectly formatted). I think the old comments about lack of content on the mining & citations have since been dealt with (mostly by your work).— Rod talk 07:54, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- I've used sfn with "opposite" and ampersands for ages and neither man nor bot has objected, even my stalker hasn't taken the opportunity to dive in.Dave DavidAHull (talk) 22:28, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
- I've put back "&" and "opposite" without any problems so it must be "loc" which was casing an error for one of my gadgets. Are you happy with how they are now?— Rod talk 09:16, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, they look fine. I was told to use "loc" by my stalker quite some time ago, I suggest you have a look at your gadget. I've now "done" Jones. Doubtless I've missed things and misinterpreted things, but as far as I'm concerned I've done WSMR, Mining on... and MM's biography. If his descendants follow through as promised I may get some more stuff, but basically I'm done on these three articles. If anyone gets back to us with comments I'll be happy to look at them on merit, but for now, I'm done. Kind regards, Dave DavidAHull (talk) 22:09, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Re: Alfred Jewel
Hey. I updated the Pop culture section of the Alfred Jewel as I had just finished watching the series, Detectorists and had noticed it. I'm not too sure how exactly to cite that... Not to be rude, it's just my source of information was the primary piece of work I literally just saw. I added the official BBC online episode links as references. Will those be okay? –uncleben85 (talk) 07:56, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Clive Cowdrey on Clevedon
Thank you for the feedback Rod. Apologies for missing that out, I've known Clive since we were 11 years old - he was my closest friend throughout our years at Clevedon Comprehensive School and into early 20s, so I (wrongly) assumed, as a primary witness, that I could say he lived in Clevedon. Here are some citations (including an interview with Clive) that make it clear.
With regards to the "promotional language" many within the UK insurance / financial services industry recognise Clive for his innovative work and particularly for working out how to make the purchases of "Zombie Funds" within his company, Resolution PLC, that others had long tried and failed to work out.
As to his knighthood this was awarded for his "Services to children and social mobility"...
I hope this helps ~~IanG~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by IanG (talk • contribs) 16:49, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter
And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:
- Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
- Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
- 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
- Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.
The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.
So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! I had been thinking that someone like you, with your exceptional contributions, would also need lots of posts at AN/I and filings at AIV, RfPP, etc. I was completely wrong. My apologies to you and Iridescent for the insult. I make mistakes and I learn. I promise to learn from this.
I am so pleased that you are taking the poll, and doubly delighted with the feedback I am seeing. I would be triply delighted if you ran. Please do.
My very best wishes,
Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:27, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
- I think we might as well start the RfA. @HJ Mitchell:, do you fancy co-nominating? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:54, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you (and everyone else) for positive comments. I have never said that I want to be an admin and, as one contributor said, "consider whether you want the hassle". My previous thinking has always been that maybe after retirement from (paid) employment and I have a bit more time it might be something interesting to do. I think the most difficult question for me would be "What administrative work do you intend to take part in?" as most of the editing I do is content related rather than "back office" - I think my answers would be similar to Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ealdgyth. Although I know they are important, I find it difficult to get motivated towards some of the functions. Yes it would be helpful, occasionally, to be able to move articles over redirects or similar functions but generally I can find a helpful admin if I run across issues I can't currently deal with.— Rod talk 14:14, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
- I just looked at Ealdgyth's logs out of curiosity and they've yet to make a logged admin action, so it is possible to pass without having any 'need' for the tools. I suppose it doesn't do any harm to give competent and trustworthy people the tools even if they don't use them. You don't really have anything to lose by throwing your hat in—you'll almost certainly succeed—I just wonder if you have anything to gain. But it's up to you. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, and I'd happily join Ritchie as co-nom if you wanted to go ahead. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:58, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
- That all sounds fair. I would obviously prefer Rod the Somerset church GA-writer any time to Rod the admin, unquestionably. If the means of the RfA do not justify the end result of you having tools you have no interest in, then just take the poll as an endorsement that lots of people think you're a great asset to the project. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:07, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter
The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:
- Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
- 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
- Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
- Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.
Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.
So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Clatworthy, Somerset page source #8
Wikipedia realy needs to use an email format-- cut and copy or delete would help. I tried entering the source for the name, but I had to fill in some boxes and then it put the date in the wrong place.
You have my permission to edit. Thanks! The book I cited is located in the University of Michigan, Graduate Library so I have no knowledge of a paper copy, or an electronic version-- there should be. I could try the UofM Library as their collection is on-line. All the best, JimF. James Clatworthy (talk) 17:12, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation (help needed)
Hi Rod,
Thanks for all the time you're putting in with cleaning up disambiguation links. I was a little concerned though about the possible overuse of Template:Disambiguation needed. As in the below example, you used it for 13 successive links over 11 articles in the space of two minutes. How much time are you actually putting in to find the correct link in each instance? For many of the examples, a read of the surrounding text should be enough to make a determination, even if you're not well versed in the subject area. Eg the date ranges are mentioned in Sports in New Orleans to be able to select the specific Negro Southern League being referred to. The link to Mars Hill is in reference to a trip to Greece and Franklin Academy is stated to be in North Carolina, for both of those there is only one link which meets that criteria. In cases where there are definitely no possible matches (eg CCSD, a Sudanese organisation), it may be better to de-link instead.

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter
The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.
Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.
As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

WikiCup 2017 September newsletter
Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Republic of China after 1949 equal to Taiwan not China PR (PRC). Please fix your error. Matthew_hk tc 17:30, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- Can you remind me which article this was on - I have done approx 100 dabs today.— Rod talk 17:47, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- If it is Football at the 1960 Summer Olympics – Men's team squads it looks as if you have already corrected it - thanks. If it is another page please specify.— Rod talk 17:49, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- If it is single issue then it was fixed, but Republic of China refer to Taiwan after 1949, and refer to whole China or Republic of China (1912–1949) before. So remember to choose the right one in the next dab edit. Matthew_hk tc 19:03, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

FLC
Hi Rod. List of Local Nature Reserves in Suffolk at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Local Nature Reserves in Suffolk/archive1 has been hanging around for over two months. I should be grateful for a review if you have time. Dudley Miles (talk) 10:15, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018
So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? Begging for FLC review(s)
Hey Rod, I was wondering if you'd be able to take a look at a couple of open FLC reviews I have? Of course, more than happy to reciprocate if you have anything that needs a review right now? My lists are:
- Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Laureus World Sports Award for Comeback of the Year/archive1
- Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Segrave Trophy/archive1
- Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Laureus World Sports Award for Team of the Year/archive1
Anything you'd be able to do to even have a look at just one would be much appreciated. Cheers, The Rambling Man (talk) 19:06, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
New Page Reviewing
Hello, Rodw.
As one of Wikipedia's most experienced Wikipedia editors, |
Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing. Your participation in the contest and contributing articles on British women from your area or wherever would we much appreciated. Thanks.
ArbCom 2017 election voter message
Hello, Rodw. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
Disambiguation
Hi, following your message at the Automobile project, I have fixed (hopefully) several links. At Regal (automobile) the link is in the hatnote and means to point to the the disamb. page (Regal). I tweaked it so it goes to the relevant section at the disamab. page but of course it continues to show as an error. Anything that should be done about that? Thanks. Regards, Eagleash (talk) 19:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for quick work - there will always be some where the link to a dab page is appropriate but we are reducing the numbers.— Rod talk 19:44, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, should the Regal page be moved to Regal (disambiguation) which would give the option 'link to disamb. page' via the 'solver'? Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 19:55, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Probably best to ask that one at Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation as it may affect other links.— Rod talk 19:58, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, should the Regal page be moved to Regal (disambiguation) which would give the option 'link to disamb. page' via the 'solver'? Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 19:55, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
New Page Reviewer granted
Hello Rodw. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.
- URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
- Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
- Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
- Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Alex Shih (talk) 03:22, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for December 7
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Cunard Building, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ropes (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 20:31, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
