Would you consider the past few edits to this article a whitewash? Bms4880 (talk) 14:27, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- Orangemike has reverted those edits. I'd call them an "advert", not a "whitewash", but either way they were wrong. --Orlady (talk) 14:50, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- The article has a bad case of WP:UNDUE going on. Where is his history of elections, won and lost? What is his party? What did he do before being elected to the Assembly? Where did he go to school? What kind of background does he come from? Instead, we get all this obsessive detail about salvia; and the roadkill bit. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:55, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- You haven't lied yet. Unfortunately, most articles about Tennessee politicians are pretty bad (much like this one). They tend to be either hagiographies, attack pages, or WP:COATRACKs. This one has been a blend of attack page and coatrack; the recently reverted edits added some hagiography (which was likely a copyvio) to the mix. Regarding the attack page aspects, Burchett hasn't done himself any favors lately -- the local media have been full of stories about allegations of embezzlement and misuse of campaign funds, all intensely commingled with reports of personal problems related to his marriage. I've added a bit of biographical info to the article. --Orlady (talk) 17:05, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- As I've said in the past, people like Burchett and Stacey Campfield (and [back in the day] Robin Beard and Henry Loeb) are part of why I've never ever given any serious thought to moving back to Tennessee since 1977. Nonetheless, they are all entitled to proper articles, like the ones I craft for our Wisconsin legislators past and present. I flatter myself that the article on Ray Bodiford, who beat me for the 70th General Assembly race back home in West Tennessee in 1974, is pretty darned neutral and reliably sourced, even if I did start it myself (with full disclosure of potential conflict of interest). --Orange Mike | Talk 17:21, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- I've worked on a number of articles about Tennessee politicians, candidates, and political operatives, including a number that I personally find rather loathsome. Articles for which I think I deserve some credit (at at least one time in the article history) include (but aren't limited to) Byron Looper, Basil Marceaux, Steve Gill, John Ragan, Dewayne Bunch (Tennessee), Randy McNally, Justin P. Wilson, Jere Hargrove, Kent Williams (politician), Julia Hurley, Steve Godsey, and Jamie Woodson. Unfortunately, there's a seemingly infinite supply of these people, and a paucity of online resources -- and there are many topics I'm far more motivated to work on. --Orlady (talk) 18:39, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Jay Paul Gumm
Hi-I had to revert some edits that an editor made to the Jay Paul Gumm article. One of the edits was deleting a citation. Also there are COI concerns about this particular editor. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

I'd be curious to get your opinion of this article which I just stumbled upon. The writing, by an editor who seems exclusively focused on this subject and links to it, has an extremely polished, almost professional feel. I have taken a bit of exception to the author's recent addition of references to the subject's upcoming first novel (the subject is "something of an academic polymath", so a venture into fiction seems natural); they strike me as a bit promotional. I may be overreacting, though, and I'd be grateful for a second opinion. Rklear (talk) 02:30, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

Golda Meir link?
Hello Orangemike--
I hope I'm responding correctly to your message; my apologies if I'm not. You deleted a link to a video of my lecture on Golda Meir, and the message indicated a conflict of interest. I don't understand--I'm a professional historian with a PhD in the field, a tenured full professor at an American University, and have published and lectured on Jewish history for over two decades. I don't have any personal connection to Golda Meir. I'm pretty confident my lecture met all standards of scholarly objectivity. Am I missing something? Please clarify, and thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hmabramson (talk • contribs) 19:08, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Veteran editor help
Hi Orangemike, I wrote an article recently on Ferenc Szaniszló, a political figure in Hungary, after reading about him in the news, but now find myself in conflict with a number of Hungarian editors with a particular view of Hungarian politics. Would you mind giving feedback as a veteran editor, or finding other veteran editors who'd be willing, at the reliable source noticeboard post I made or at the talk pages for Ferenc Szaniszló? If you think I'm way off after reading a few of the articles, that'd mean a lot to me and convince me I should bark up a different tree. Thanks! -Darouet (talk) 01:27, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Can you, or someone else with more wiki knowledge handle this?
Can't the article on John Coltrane be cleared up to integrate, at least, the identical age information (or hopefully, everything) in the two infoboxes on his biography? Otherwise, it's confusing! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 20:10, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- The two infoboxes are for such widely disparate purposes that there is really no way to integrate them. I don't feel that all that much harm is done. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:39, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Possible COI issue
User:Robiyacher started their account yesterday and seems to be using it solely to promote Georgia Holt, the 86-year-old mother of Cher. The only articles she's editing are for Holt, Cher, Holt's daughter/Cher's half-sister Georganne LaPiere, and the various current Holt projects that Cher has been helping her with. So far, Robiyacher has created three completely unsourced articles relating to Holt (an album released a couple days ago, and two singles from it). I did my best to clean-up one of them: Honky Tonk Woman (Georgia Holt Album). (I'll leave it to you to decide which of the articles s/he created are notable). Anyway, I hope you can educate this edtior about creating all these totally unsourced articles, notabillity, and potential COI issues. Also, the editor is not able to write in proper English; for example, see Homecoming Queen(Georgia Holt Song) which shows the type of article that destroys Wikipedia's credibility. Thanks! --76.189.109.155 (talk) 13:26, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, Mike. Here's another article for a Holt song the editor created: I'm Just Your Yesterday. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 15:15, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- Mike, you deleted Honky Tonk Woman (Georgia Holt Album) a few days ago, but the editor just ignored you and re-created it (with a slightly different, unitalicized title). Again, the editor fails to establish notability, uses poor English, uppercases the first letter of many words, and uses promotional language ("which clearly demonstrates exactly where Cher's unique voice came from"). And it's completely unsourced again. Please delete it again. Robiyacher needs warned for all these editing violations and complete disregard for the initial deletion. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 17:15, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- Update: Robiyacher is at it again. S/he just re-created another article you speedy deleted a couple days ago; again with a slightly different name: Homecoming Queen (Georgia Holt Song). You had deleted it as Homecoming Queen(Georgia Holt Song). (The one you deleted had no space after "Queen"; the new one does.) As before, no notability and zero sources. This editor is here solely to promote Holt's non-notable music and other Cher-related articles. And look at this post by Robiyacher on the Homecoming Queen talk page; it gives more proof that s/he has no understanding of notability and will simply keep creating articles about Holt like this. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 13:50, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
Would like to reverse an indefinite protection you placed on this article last October. I do not believe indefinite protection is appropriate, and am quite happy to explain at whatever length necessary the technicalities of the subject involved (basically, the determined user involved does not understand that the U.S. Army has only one regiment with the same designation at the same time). Would you mind acknowledging on my talkpage? Kind regards from Aotearoa New Zealand, Buckshot06 (talk) 22:39, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
Editor re-creating articles you speedy-deleted
Mike, please see the thread above for updates about User:Robiyacher, who has just re-created articles about Georgia Holt (Cher's mother) that you speedy-deleted a couple days ago. This editor must be president of the Holt fan club (and anything else Cher-related). ;) I wasn't sure you'd go back to look at an old thread, so that's why I'm leaving this message. Thanks. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 15:29, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking care of this, Mike. :) --76.189.109.155 (talk) 18:29, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Help with a clear case of autobiography, Richard R. Pieper
Orangemike, the article Richard R. Pieper appears to be an autobiography. One of the main contributors is a user named Richard R. Pieper. The article has virtually no sources at all, except the subject’s own business website and a sensational right wing website. This article contains completely ridiculous information… he is a member of the Milwaukee Yacht Club, and a Member of the local Church Council etc... I don’t believe this kind of minutiae belong on WP. Since the article is completely unsupported, I believe it should be edited to a stub, and let others build it back, this time with sources. What do you think? This man is known around Milwaukee, and a quick check of the local newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, shows some articles collaborating some of the information. Billynow (talk) 22:33, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
SDUSA
I'm not sure why you reverted by edit. The stated goal of the SDUSA, a socialist party, was to transform the Democratic Party into a social democratic party. In the current system, the Democrats are regarded as center-left; moving it to social democracy is a move further to the left, to the left-wing - which is what socialism is regarded as in the United States. Could you perhaps meet me in the middle and make it 'center-left to left-wing'? Toa Nidhiki05 02:20, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- The actual political stance of the SD-USA in almost all matter of policy was social conservative, economic middle-of-the-road; rhetoric≠action. They were a bunch of aging and increasingly irrelevant (but powerful) Cold Warriors and survivors of the purging of "subversive tendencies" from the American labor movement in the McCarthy era, who fiercely supported Scoop Jackson and Hubert Humphrey over George McGovern in the 1972 Democratic presidential race, and ended up tacitly supporting the re-election of Richard Nixon. That's not left-wing even by American standards. The members of the old Socialist Party of America who were actually left-of-center bolted to form the Democratic Socialists of America and (to their left, but still pretty moderate by European standards) the Socialist Party U.S.A.. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:34, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- I understand many anti-communist socialists adopted anti-communist views as a priority, and some were appointed in Republican administrations; those are the people that originated neoconservatism, after all. However, we don't judge parties by actual actions - the CCP is considered communist even though it has adopted capitalist aspects, for example. The only source that describes positions here calls it a socialist party, and socialism is left-wing in the United States. Maybe political position can be omitted entirely since there is no confirmation either way? Toa Nidhiki05 02:43, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
Sherban Young deletions
Orangemike, I received your talk notices about "crap" and warnings of promoting a specific angle in Wikipedia articles. I do work for Sherban Young, am a novice at using Wikipedia and was not aware I was violating any rules. I did read the articles you sent -- I see that adding a link to Sherban on the Wodehouse page could be interpreted as a violation. It is unclear to me why it was incorrect to delete the McKnight entry. McKnight is featured in a novel by Sherban and with McKnight's blessing/permission. Also unclear is why you would have deleted Sherban's authorship of the three CD-ROM games mentioned on his own page. His authorship is not in dispute and the mention of the games reveals how he got his start in composing puzzles and intricate plotlines in general. I certainly don't want to be in violation but sincerely want to understand what was offensive about these two items. Thanks! Lynseyhannah (talk) 14:28, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- We have pretty close to a zero-tolerance policy here about publicity efforts; and after your stunt with the vanity insert of your boss into the article on the great P. G. Wodehouse, it was clear that the way to go was to revert all your edits and put you on notice. If there are things you want to see changed in an article, given your blatant conflict of interest, make the suggestion on the talk page(s) of the article(s) involved, fully disclosing as you do your conflict of interest, and other editors without your conflict will examine your suggestions and possibly even incorporate them into the article. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:56, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- You will note that another editor has in fact returned some items to the article, since they seemed not too promotional in nature. That's how it should work. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:26, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
Your Blockage of Wolf Trap Foundation account and reversion of it's edits at Wolf Trapl
Good Morning Orangemike
A couple of quick questions -
- 1) May I assume you revered the recent edits to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts article due to the obvious conflict of interest?
- 2) May I assume that you blocked the User:Wolf Trap Foundation account as it does not belong to an individual?
If the answers to the above are both yes, do you see a problem with my advising the individual who made the edits that
- 1) she needs to open a personal account to make edits
- 2) since she has a COI, she must provide neutral third party citations for any edits she makes.
Thanks
ed
Ecragg (talk) 17:03, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me; but make sure she realizes that she is not to make the edits herself, but to suggest them on the talk page of the article, complete with proper citations and with full disclosure of her own COI. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:28, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Clue-Bot beat me to reverting the vandalism of the IP [1]. My attempt at revert happened probably a split second after Cluebot executed its revert. Unblock
Hello, Mike. I have taken the fairly unusual step of accepting an unblock request at User talk:Boriswatch without first consulting you as the blocking admin. I really cannot see the user's edits a in any way promotional. Although the username relates to the name of a blog, I feel that it comes under the provision "plain domain names (without .com, .co.kr, etc.) are sometimes acceptable, such as when the purpose is simply to identify the user as a person" at WP:SPAMNAME, and the account has not promoted the blog, nor as far as I can find even mentioned it. Please let me know if you think I am wrong, but that is how I see this case. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:58, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- On reconsideration, I can see your point of view. As a matter of policy, I feel that user handles which match the name of one's blog do fall under WP:PRODNAME; but a softerblock would have been the way to go. ISTR that what tipped it for me is that he was engaged in disputes about a guy named Boris, so I saw the repeated appearance of this username as being an advertisement appealing for those who were interested in Boris-watching; thus, the spamuserblock. Still, I think your actions are quite reasonable and well-explained, and I await the account's renaming. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:28, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Susan J. Elliott
Thank you for dealing with/blocking someone claiming to be Susan J. Elliott. I would have thought that a lawyer would have read what you wrote more carefully, because I saw that no one said that her article was an autobiography, but she was advised to read the policy on autobiographical articles. I am not entirely sure that she really is Susan J. Elliott. A real lawyer would have probably avoided SHOUTING IN ALL CAPITALS. In any case, she (or he or it) needed blocking. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:23, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- Nonetheless, Andy does have a point, and one that should be seriously discussed by the body, in an effort to achieve consensus. (Hey, I'm a hippie, a second-wave feminist AND a Quaker; I loves me some consensus!) --Orange Mike | Talk 20:42, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- I put up the first Susan J. Elliott page. She is not my friend, relative, or person close to me. Instead, she is an author and professional who is doing really great practical work.
- So, your accusations are incorrect.
128.220.159.65 (talk) 13:36, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- "Orangemike", I don't know how to assure you that I am this- I don't want my personal information all over the Internet. But for one thing, you should call Susan herself- you can find her blog quite easily, and it will be easy to figure out that she is a real person, and that she didn't create her Wikipedia entry. I started the basic entry, and I haven't looked at it for ages...maybe 4 years or so. I noticed that about a year after I put it up, more people had added things. That's what an entry is supposed to be like, right? I really admire Susan's work, and I recommend her blog to a lot of people I meet, all the time. So, OK, let me give you a throwaway email that I just made, so you can contact me there and then give me your phone number and I will call you, and just basically tell you the exact same thing I'm typing here. I'm sure that there are people who do whatever on the Internet and on Wikipedia, but Susan isn't one. However, because her work is either with those in bad relationship breakups or those dealing with grief, as you can imagine, there are some odd characters out there who try to cause trouble on the blog, and I'm sure elsewhere. Here's my throwaway email: veeancee@yahoo.com . Send me how to contact you and tell me what you want to know, and I can call and talk with you about it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.220.159.65 (talk) 13:51, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- A person claiming to be Elliott was editing the article; I gave her the standard warning template about creating OR EDITING an article about yourself. Instead of addressing the substantive concerns I raised, she started dropping threats about how this was libel and she was a lawyer, and CYBERSHOUTING IN ALL CAPITALS LIKE THIS as she did so. Until the threat of lawsuit is addressed, nothing more substantial can be done; this has nothing to do with the merit of my concerns (or hers), but rather with the fact that we will not allow the threat of legal action to create a chilling effect on what we do here. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:32, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Double-check re: church memberships on their sites
Mike, you commented on Talk:List_of_the_largest_Protestant_churches_in_the_United_States#PDF_-_options_to_make_it_a_reliable_source that "if it were published on their website, I think this still falls under self-published sources, and would not meet our standards of reliable sourcing." Anyways, the other 2 editors in the discussion both agree that this would suffice and is used extensively on the page already using WP:ABOUTSELF. Assuming that he takes it (and does so successfully), would you be amenable to an unblock-and-rename? Cheers, Yunshui 雲水 12:56, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'm always in favor of redemption; but I'm rather concerned about the persistently promotional tone, especially such peacock wording as "football legend ThisGuyYouNeverHeardOf" and "super model ThisObscureWannabe". I really suspect this person works in PR somewhere and has suffered permanent hardening of the sensibilities towards what is acceptable fact versus advertising fluff. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:50, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hmm. I'm on the fence here. Like you, I'd rather see him rejoin the fold, but whilst it's not the blatant vanispamcruftisement of his previous efforts, there's still, as you say, an air of puffery about the text. I'm also concerned about the sourcing; three of those sources aren't accessible to me but appear to be videos of the show itself, whilst the other two are just TV listings - nothing indicates to me that there's a shred of notability to be had. I think, on balance, that I'll leave the unblock appeal in place rather than actioning it; since I'd probably tag that article for deletion if I stumbled on it in mainspace, it would be rather hypocritical of me to unblock based on its suitability. Renaissance Books Conflict of Interest
Orange Mike, I'm sure you're aware that, in violation of COI guidelines, you created and edited the article on Renaissance Books, your current place of employment. Doesn't that leave you with unclean hands when you template and block others for the actions that you yourself are guilty of as well? RenPR (talk) 18:31, 14 May 2013 (UTC)— RenPR (talk • contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
- I created that article long ago, when I was green here myself, but even then using solid references, and fully disclosing my COI on my user page. Nonetheless, I would certainly never do something like nowadays; and I have long since stopped editing that article.
- This matter was discussed in full by the community before I was entrusted with the Mop and Bucket of adminship; and the consensus was that my behavior had been more than acceptable.
- My almost decade-long record here displays that from my first edit, I was clearly not here for spamming purposes; which is not the case for the spammers and COI editors I warn and/or block. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:49, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- Interesting, a user with the name RenPR, whose only participation in the project is this outrageous accusation. This is obviously someone who was educated about WP:COI or reprimanded for violating it while editing as a different user. Give me a break. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 12:03, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

- Of course admins must take responsibility for what they do, but that doesn't mean you have any obligation to reply to someone whose first (and still only) edit is to come here to falsely accuse you - in a snarky manner, no less - of being "guilty" of violating COI guidelines. That in itself is proof that they had some sort of contact with you under a different user name. Further, you weren't even an admin when you edited that article. So I commend you for replying in such a courteous and detailed manner to the PR editor. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 13:58, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) It is a commendable response; significantly more-so for not parsing the motivations of the one asking the question. There is no down-side for residing above reproach, nor for holding that higher ground when so eloquently enticed to stoop. Hats off to the man in orange. My76Strat (talk) 15:09, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Advice about getting other eyes on an article or beginning a RfC
I have an edit at Common Cause. It describes the organization as "liberal". There are well over 500 unique news (not opinion) sources that describe it as such. (NYT, WaPo, LAT, WSJ, ABC, CNN, etc.) There are a large number of academic sources that use that descriptor. Another editor disagrees with the usage. No one else ever visits the talk page or article. I think a RfC effort might(?) help. Is there an easier way to get input or how does one go about doing an RfC? Thanks in advance for your guidance and advice. Hi Orangemike, over three years ago you warned this user of COI [2]; it's safe to say the suggestion was not taken to heart. Since then Josh Urbiztondo has become an apotheosis. I've started a thread at the BLP noticeboard. It's particularly difficult to begin weeding because one can start with the blatantly peacocky and then conclude that almost nothing is sourced; virtually the whole article is a scrapbook as recounted by the father. Any assistance you can render will be appreciated. Thanks, 99.149.85.229 (talk) 21:07, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Anti-Racism
The edit to the article you complained about, was actually to remove opinions and bias, which were painfully clear.....where were you then? I advise you look up the history in said article, before making your own uneducated opinions. There was *clear* one sided racially motivated bias and opinion in that article against Caucasians....and ironically you're actually doing nothing but proving the definition of the article in question by using such little thought before coming to a conclusive perception. Fair is fair, and you should reflect on that. I implore you to not use the internet to fill the void of a lackluster life. It's cheap and disdainful. My hope is that you'll learn from your mistakes and be a bit more thorough in the future, if you do feel the need to fill that void. Be better than you are. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hardwarz (talk • contribs) 01:54, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Mike, long time no see. I've tidied the above article and removed the {{NPOV}} tag you added to it. I think this is a case of well-meaning inexperience rather than malice, and previous contributors to the article have not understood that an encyclopaedic writing style is very different from the style of writing expected of journalists or paper biographers. There's probably more toning down that could be done, so you might want to have a look over it, just don't judge the previous editors too harshly. Proper procedure for Theatre Companies up upload pictures
Good Afternoon Orangemike
I am thinking about asking a couple of theatre companies to upload pictures from some of their past performances to Wikipedia which I can then use in associated articles. I know the mechanics of uploading, but I have a question about the release of rights. Specifically how could the Contemporary American Theater Festival upload an image. CATF owns the rights to the image and are the only organization that could release them to Wikipedia, but they are not supposed to have a wikipedia user account since they are an organization. While individuals on the CATF staff could have user accounts, as individuals they do not have the authority to release rights to the pictures. How can I suggest that they proceed?
Thanks

Request to review deletion of Peter Russell
The page for Peter Russell (Author) (born 5/7/1946) has been removed - https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Peter_Russell_%28author%29 - and I would like to request its reinstatement on the following reasons:
The books that were compared to Amazon's ratings - "The Brain Book" and "Creative Manager" - were not his bestselling books and would not be expected to by high on Amazon's list today. (Although, the Brain Book was a New Your Post bestseller in 1982.)
His more notable works are "The Global Brain" which sold 100,000 copies, translated into more than a dozen languages and in its time was recognized as a leader in its field. It is virtually out of print now, so again would not be reflected in current Amazon charts. He is generally recognized as having coined the term "global brain" in that book, which forecast many aspects of the coming Internet. His video on the subject won international acclaim and during the eighties (Pre-YouTube) days was a popular showing at events around he world.
"One known book in a field" is inaccurate. Of his nine published books,4 continue to get attention and praise in their respective fields. "The Global Brain" "From Science to God" "Waking Up in Time" "The TM Technique" (still selling after 40 years).
That his work is frequently quoted in other books, and on the web, in citations that reflect mostly respect rather than marketing should also be considered.
A search on Google generally brings his name up before any other person of the same name. Obviously his own home page is near the top since it has high Google rankings (which alone should say he is not insignificant), further down you will many many references to his work that are clearly not self-marketing.
This is a case of a writer who was significant ten or twenty years ago, not appearing quite so significant today particularly in rankings based on sales at the moment. But that should not be grounds for deletion. The same would apply to many deceased authors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elfrock (talk • contribs) 16:36, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

R-41's problem

OrangeMike, I got a request from TOS to unprotect Suburban Express (or, rather, to change it to semiprotection due to vandalism). Follow-Up
Thanks Mike for your insight.
I didn't write my own wiki page and I fully understand the purpose and function of Wikipedia. The link I provided to my deleted page indicates that my page was created by other wiki users.
With that in mind, how should I proceed?
The deletion was made on a statement that is bias and inaccurate. The person who deleted the page has a great knowledge of music, but specifically not the kind that I write. He even attests to this on his personal wiki page! It's like having a Classical musicologist weigh in on heavy metal. So I question the validity of his subjective reason for its deletion. A google search of my name can establish credibility through the accolades and achievements I've been blessed to attain in my career. Of course there were a handful of credible journal entries, billboard links and so on attached to the wiki page on me.
Thanks for your help -

Need an Admin maybe, again
I bumped into this article, David Rhodes, while working on the Unreferenced articles project, hoping to add an infobox and give it a few references, which is the point of the project. I've been doing this kind of thing for a few years now, and have learned to check out the "official website" for the BLP articles without references, and this article is, word for word, the exact write-up from his website. What is to be done in such cases? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 06:19, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

- Thanks! It seemed obvious self-promotion. People are pushing harder to be listed in the Wikipedia. A great generous photographer who supplied dozens of photos to us asked me to write up his business ln the Wikipedia. I explained that it's a WP:COI issue, (and also copped out by just saying I only do biographies of musicians which is true, but spineless) and haven't really heard from him since... a pity. Q: when I find suspicious articles like these that are mostly copy/pasted, if you are busy, can you recommend a couple other editors who also may assist specifically with this kind of problem? They aren't always as obvious as this one, but still, really close. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 20:09, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
- One of the best in the biz, so to speak, is User:Moonriddengirl, a copyright standout. Otherwise: you may want to take a look at some of our Music Wikiprojects for names of active editors in that field. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:18, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Paris College of Art
Hello, I have been attempting to make changes to the Paris College of Art page to respond to an order of an ICC Arbitration Tribunal regarding discontinuing the usage of the Ecole Parsons a Paris name in association with Paris College of Art. By reverting my changes the page does not conform with the order. Could you please revert my changes?

You re William Jockusch: "BBB, take a look at his recent edit at Feminism - clearly a "men's rights" NPOV/FRINGE violation."
I didn't notice this comment, Mike, when you posted it. I just happened to see it now when I was looking at what Sarek did on that page. Did you just want to make me aware of it, or did you have something more in mind? Feminism is not formally subject to probationary sanctions - at least, there's no notice on the talk page. Do you think we should make it subject to sanctions? Surprisingly for me, not a lot of editing is done on the article, so it wouldn't be a major burden to put it under the MRM umbrella. From looking at its recent history, I see a few names I recognize as being involved in editing MRM articles. Anyway, I'm just following up.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:23, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Boart Longyear page revisions
Hi Orange Mike - I see you changed the Boart Longyear page back to its original version. I work with the company and am simply trying to correct some things in the timeline. We tried to take a very unbiased, fact-based, historical approach when creating the timeline, so if there is a particular area that you felt came across as promotional, please let me know, and I can soften the language. Also, we'd like to upload the approved corporate logo, if possible, but we're not autoconfirmed. Perhaps you could help us with that. Thanks!— Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnkrantz123 (talk • contribs)
- Hello, Johnkrantz123. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Boart Longyear, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.
All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.
If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:
- Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
- Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
- Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
- Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.
Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.
For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:45, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback, Mike. I understand Wiki is pretty strict about those who have a relationship to the organization being written about, but the purpose of making these changes was to correct factual errors in the timeline and to correct the issues outlined at the top of the page, where it says "This article has multiple issues." I believe the version you restored is actually quite a bit more promotional than the version I attempted to publish. Is there a third party editor or someone you can direct us to that would work with us to correct these problems? We just want to make sure the correct information is getting out there and that it is unique to what is already out there on the web. I have no intentions of creating advertorial or promotional content, and I am happy to remove any portions that you deem so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnkrantz123 (talk • contribs) 19:25, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
- Three things that led to a rejection:
- "world's leading provider"
- The timeline, written in present tense, replacing the narrative written in past tense.
- The bullet-list-style "awards" section, again replacing a narrative.
- This discussion should have taken place before you started to edit; and it should take place on the talk page of the article. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:52, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Mike. If I change the present tense to past, delete "world's leading" and remove the awards section, will my edits be acceptable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnkrantz123 (talk • contribs) 20:01, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing this issue to the attention of the BLP noticeboard. Please do not have any further contact with Migdia Chinea Varela, including posting on her talk page. I do not know how to reply to your message, but that is not my product which is unreleased- it is the ONLY company with a definitive outlook, which is why I included their website. I also did not mention any brands or companies in the additional information I added, but that has been deleted and the article frankly lacks and to leave it as is, you may as well delete the entire thing. Currently it is a disservice to the users of Wikipedia. As a donor, I'm agitated that I'm financing an organization that does not care or shows lackluster in the area that I have interest in. What I added was not enough either, but that's why there are many people to help, except that you may be deleting their contributions too. Note taken about bias in article writing. I agree, but you don't ask an architect about authoring. If you want to know about authoring, you ask an author. I tried to be of use- I tried to help, and I wanted to contribute on something that I know about. I have donated money to this organization, because I thought it was good, but the information that was deleted from the article was needed. I'm disappointed in the lack of due diligence taken and the accusation of self-promoting which did not occur whatsoever- and then the threat of a final warning? C'mon. I'll do you a favor, and I'll close my account and never use this site again- nor fund it. Now I understand a great deal why universities and other reputable institutions frown on the use of Wikipedia as a source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rdumobile (talk • contribs) 12:33, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
Hey Orange. IPs from the company are editing the page again against consensus. A bit of a preemptive ban?
User PHI Comms came onto Wikipedia, disclosed who he is, and wants to update their not-for-profit medical research organization's Wikipedia page. So far they haven't made any edits. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to instruct them to refrain from editing their page(other than correcting dates/obvious facts) and to make suggestions to talk page instead of banning them?AioftheStorm (talk) 19:48, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Stale COI
If an editor has stopped editing for over 2 years, and you uncover some editing that appears to be in conflict with our COI standards is it OK to just let it go until such time that some new edit oversteps? Should we be concerned that the account is there and has made edits that could be paid advocacy editing and COI for personally removing content that is accurate from their Article while adding information in regards to the company they work for? Kinda new territory for me.--Amadscientist (talk) 01:23, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- If they have stopped editing, I'd probably drop a templated warning on their talk page, and maybe a {{connected contributor}} template on the article's talk page. I'd then revert any remaining COI edits if that COI content is still there; and add the article to my watchlist. I do wish we could watchlist the edits of suspicious accounts; but I believe it has been concluded that this would facilitate wikistalking behavior. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:51, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- Going through the article it appears that the user is the major contributor with 129 edits which is 31.1% of the total edits to the article. I am going to be going through it and see exactly what was placed by the account and remove the information. As it is not a large article this may reduce it to a stub. I will then attempt to rebuild it if it gets to small on my own. Going on vacation so I will probably work on it next week.--Amadscientist (talk) 07:34, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Preemptive block
Hey Orangemike
Wasn't this a teensy bit bitey? It looks like a new user was asking for guidance and was rewarded with having the door closed in their face. I know we don't allow shared accounts, but what harm is there in pointing the new editor down the right path? - MrX 02:28, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Hello. There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 02:44, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- I do have to say I disagree with the block. The account is being used by one individual, hence I am a Communications Specialist writing on behalf of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners.. The user wants to share information, isn't that what we're here for? Blocks should be preventative, what are you preventing with this block? Dusti*poke* 02:55, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- He is preventing an admitted shared account from using the article solely as a promotional tool for their client or employer (I'm not certain which it is). And starting a report at AN/I before hearing one word from Mike is, frankly, outrageous. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 03:42, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- I don't believe you've looked that the accounts contribs - they were reaching out asking for help on what to do.
They didn't actually begin editing. They actually updated the article with (from what I'm able to see) facts - followed by ref's. I don't see any promotional material. Dusti*poke* 03:44, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- I don't believe you've looked that the accounts contribs - they were reaching out asking for help on what to do.
- I was fully aware of Ceilingtile's edit history. What I saw is that he began by editing the article of the county that employs (or contracts with) him, using a shared account, and then proceeded to spam the talk pages of seven editors with the same pasted text, before finally posting the same comments at the help desk. And contrary to your comment that you didn't "see any promotional material" in his June 11 edits, I suggest you re-review it. You will see unnecessary, promotional content, some which is either unsourced or poorly sourced. For example, he called the county the "central hub for tourism" and used the county's own website to source it; said they have the "highest rated public schools in the State of Florida" but didn't indicate when; said their schools "received a perfect score of "10" from the GreatSchools" (whatever that is) without showing a source; and added unencylopedic promotional text about various colleges with either no sourcing or the school's own website as a source. And there are other problems. So let's be realistic about this; the account is being used by those who are paid by St. Johns County to promote the county. Period. But my primary objection, as I said, is the perplexing fact that an editor took Mike to ANI before he had a chance to speak a single word on this matter. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 05:57, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Hey, just a comment from someone else on the helpdesk, I've notice you block a lot of users for posts on the helpdesk. I'm wondering if it may be best to try to work through it with them first, and in the process of doing so notify them of the UP violation, or other blockable offenses. Obvious vandals and trolls excluded, of course. Charmlet (talk) 04:34, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- This issue has been raised here many times before and it's part of the reason I stalk Orange's Talk page, to triage the bleeding from his sometimes vicious blows. I don't expect a solution to be forthcoming, for starters because it's just unlikely the pattern will change and except in the most extreme cases we have no tools to "force" someone into consensus against their will.
- Although this block was inappropriate in the most obvious way, I count myself among those that appreciates there being an admin that will swiftly block a COI editor that is being disruptive of my editing. And the aggressive blocking will always have enough supporters to prevent concrete action. So I suspect it will just continue, as it always has. Some editors will praise him for it and others will curse him. Many blocks will get overturned. And it will go on.
- However, Orange, I have been relatively effective at persuading many COIs to leave it be of their own volition and this is more effective and a longer-term solution. Every editor you block, means more astroturfing for me to clean up tomorrow in my patrols for article mentioning "industry-leading" and "turnkey" and I think it has the opposite effect as what you intend. CorporateM (Talk) 06:42, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- Based on CorporateM's user page, I have little doubt that s/he is fully aware of the WP:NOPAY section of our COI guidelines and Ceilingtile's June 11 edits. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 06:52, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- I stand corrected. Someone had said the editor had not made an edit to the page, which is not true per the IP's link above. Also, the edit was clearly promotional. In that case, it seems like a defendable (albeit controversial) block. I apologize for my mis-statement as it appears I did not have the correct information. Although technically a warning with instructions[7] may have been preferred, for my part if I were an editor with an interest in the article I would appreciate such blocks. Educating the PR person on what they did wrong and appropriate behavior is important, because it prevents the behavior from continuing in a more covert way in the future. CorporateM (Talk) 14:59, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
PR People
Hi Orangemike. I am a bit concerned that you blocked somebody for asking a good faith question at the help desk. As there was only one edit and one editor at the time, it would have been simple to inform the user that shared accounts are not allowed, due to copyright attribution reasons, and that each person needs to make their own account, and that if there's any evidence of more than one person using an account, it would be blocked. That explanation would have ended the problem, because the user was quite clearly an honest, cooperative person.
Second, PR people are allowed to edit here. They are allowed to identify themselves and make suggestions on article talk pages. When Wikipedia writes about a person, place or organization, there can be real life consequences for the subjects. As such, those subjects have every right to make their opinions heard here, because what we do affects them. They should refrain from making any potentially contentious edit on article pages, but they are welcome to participate on talk pages in a non-disruptive, helpful way.
Would you agree to handle things as I've suggested going forward? Best regards, Jehochman Talk 13:32, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- Jehochman, I respected your comments here... until I just saw the uncivil ones you posted in the help desk discussion 15 minutes earlier. Why the "obnoxious" description at the help desk, but not here? Why the rudeness at the help desk, but not here? Why even post at the help desk before talking to Mike? Whatever respect I had for you initially is out the window. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 15:08, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with Jehochman, and to expand on my comments above (and what Jehochman seems to stop short of saying) - blocking shouldn't be the first thing you do after a rule violation when they are asking about the rules, or even if they aren't, asking about something else. We need to help them, not prohibit them from editing. Charmlet (talk) 17:45, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- Also, calling this crap in the way you did was inappropriate. If it didn't qualify for CSD as promotion, then it's not crap clearly. Just because it's not a notable person does not make it crap, and telling new users they put crap up when it's not is very discouraging. Charmlet (talk) 17:56, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
- To establish context: I did not tell the spammer that their post was "crap": I told them that a company employee should not be "pulling this kind of crap": i.e., writing two fulsome profiles of their bosses, and contributing nothing whatsoever else to this project. They were not here to contribute, they were here to pimp their company execs. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:13, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- Regardless of context, the word crap should not be thrown around lightly. This person wanted an article on someone, they created it, they worried about why it was deleted and what they'd done wrong. The correct response would've been to guide them through Wikipedia policies (as I'm now doing), not to throw around crap and then not ever talk to them again. For all we know, these people could be notable and we just haven't found it yet, and the articles will be improved to great lengths after worked through with the creator. But that'll never happen if the word crap is thrown around and AfDs are started without even trying to communicate with the creator. Charmlet (talk) 04:22, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- "the word crap should not be thrown around lightly"... LMFAO. Charmlet, I'm sure you're a nice person but you really need to grow a much thicker skin and move on. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 07:04, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Hey OM ... just to let you know, someone's actually had the balls to claim that I've been trying to smear you in some way. Apparently our unofficial tagteam on promotional usernames isn't well-noticed! Cheers (✉→BWilkins←✎) 12:26, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- Since Bwilkins of course didn't provide a proper diff, I will. He seems to enjoy presenting things out of context. First, I am the one who made the comment. In this thread on his talk page, I said, "Your apparent attempt to smear admin OrangeMike's reputation by bringing up past allegations against him, which have absolutely no relevance to the current matter, was highly improper." That was a reference to what Bwilkins said about you at ANI: "you should be well-aware that OM has been brought to AN/ANI numerous times for this same situation (go ahead, look it up)". He said that right after I was defending you against those, including Bwilkins, who thought it was perfectly acceptable for you to be taken to ANI without anyone even attempting to talk to you about it on your talk page first because of your alleged history of bad conduct. So Bwilkins' response was essentially that no one needed to talk to you first because of your supposedly notorious history. So yes, Bwilkins, making that comment was absolutely a smear on Mike's reputation IMO. This is why making out-of-context claims with no diffs to back them us usually won't work out well for you. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 14:33, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- And so your assumption was that I was attacking my colleague, rather than defending him? You assume that I thought OM was doing "bad things"?? My comment was quite clearly a statement that since OM has been "accused" of the same thing before, he knew exactly what his response would be, and what the subject was about. You took a rather bold, yet bizarre stretch to assume it was an attack. Since OM and I are often working serially when it comes to dealing with blocked promotional editors, OM knows quite well that there was never even a hint of an attack. I'm not sure how you could have parsed the English language in such a way, especially if you did 32 seconds of research - which is something I suggested that you do earlier, and I'll bet you still refuse to do it ... after all, that would entail you eating crow, and <insert deity> forbid that you admit you were wrong. You'd rather hide behind the anonymous ruse of defending someone (✉→BWilkins←✎) 14:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- Uh, I don't have to make assumptions. Your own words and the diff tell the entire story. Right out of your mouth: "you should be well-aware that OM has been brought to AN/ANI numerous times for this same situation (go ahead, look it up)" Obviously, you've been called out on insulting comment that only hurt Mike's cause and now you're trying to spin it to save your ass. That's why you have this ongoing habit and making claims and explanations without providing any diffs to back up what you're saying. Nice try. Fortunately, I there were several other admins helping me to defend Mike's reputation. Because you sure did nothing to help. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 15:28, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- So, how in the English language does my statement insult or hurt Mike's cause? You're reading it quite in the reverse than the English language permits. I've been able to obtain a crow for you ... would you like rice with that? Some potato? Coleslaw? I really did try to gently prod you into re-reading the entire sequence of events, but yet you still choose to go based on your ridiculous assumptions. I did not want to say "stop behaving like Alexander - but your continual pointy refusal to AGF and re-read have made me think me and Mike (and now a few other admins) are simply being trolled - and I'm also highly considering that you're someone's sock, simply back to stir up non-existent shit (✉→BWilkins←✎) 15:36, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- Now you're so desperate that you're resorting to the last-resort trolling tactic of making generic, baseless claims of socking. When an editor is backed into a corner, just call him a sock. Haha. You do understand that accusing someone of being a sock without reporting it can be considered harassment, right? If I had another account, I certainly would've used the other one to help Mike more in that ANI discussion because you and many of the others didn't do it. Which leads one to wonder why you even needed to bring up Mike's past? What did that have to with the fact that no one attempted to talk to him first before bringing him to ANI? I mean, that's what you were using as justification for bypassing direct discussion with Mike and making a beeline for ANI. That's the question you've ignored repeatedly from me and the other admins who disagree with you. And only a complete moron would call my participation in the ANI discussion an "anonymous ruse of defending someone". That outrageous characterization doesn't even make any sense. Instead of continuing your futile effort to justify bringing up the past allegations about Mike, why don't you just apologize instead, and move on. You really need to take a wikibreak because you've been pissing off a lot of editors lately. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 15:48, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- So, you misread a statement (because you didn't know and still refuse to understand the backstory); you fabricate some kind of animosity between OM and myself; you jump in like Mr. White Knight (or is that Don Quixote?); you refuse to drop the stick. How this: let OrangeMike decide whether he believes I was attacking him - he's a big boy, and can handle himself just fine. If he comes to my talkpage when he's around and says "yeah, I felt you threw me under the bus", I'll apologize profusely ... I'm not going to say sorry for something I didn't do because someone who doesn't read English properly (and also clearly misunderstands the difference between an admin opinion and admin decreeing something) can't drop a stick and take a minute to read. Were you in my head? Do you know for sure I was trashing Mike? Or are you just making stuff up? (Note: it's quite obviously the latter). So - here's your challenge: don't post any more here until OrangeMike decides whether or not he saw my message as an attack (✉→BWilkins←✎) 16:11, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- Blah, blah, blah. It's hilarious how you say let Mike decide for himself, yet you refuse to stop being so defensive about it. Doth protests too much. ;) No one forced you to come here and do this endless, nauseating spin of your own words. And of course you'd love to get the last word in. That's more than apparent. And once again, you misrepresented what I said (what a surprise), yet again with no diff to back it up. I didn't say it was an "attack"; I said your comment smeared his reputation. And, yes, I provided the diff above. You can't hide from your own words: "you should be well-aware that OM has been brought to AN/ANI numerous times for this same situation (go ahead, look it up)". Most of the edtiors in the discussion would have had no idea about that fact had you not injected it. Just apologize, admit you shouldn't have said it, and move on. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 16:31, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

- Now that Bbb23 has shed some light on the history of SPAs, socks and promotional editing on the article, it should be obvious the block was appropriate. And in fact, we should show some appreciation for Orange making disliked blocks that are in-fact needed. We need more editors willing to do things that will make them disliked, but are in the project's best interest.
- I saw that my essay was positioned as something that needs some counter-balance from an anti-PR point-of-view, so that makes me wonder if Orange might have some comments on it. I've also been reworking it in general as I didn't realize anyone was using it. CorporateM (Talk) 13:35, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
- For the sake of efficiency, it should be obvious from the block notice and from any help desk comments why the block was necessary. If there was such a history of game playing by new account, it could have been pointed out, and this would have saved a lot of needless discussion. Oh well! We live and learn. Wrapping this up
I don't have any enemies participating in this discussion. I've got a bunch of colleagues, each with a somewhat different take on how we handle what is possibly the biggest single danger to our reputation: the spammer/PR person/COI editor. Wilkins was trying to defend me; Charmlet and Jehoch were trying to ameliorate the sometime harshness of my language; CorporateM is trying to avoid a syndrome where the spammer is induced to go stealth and astroturf us. I thank all of you for your inputs and your suggestions; now, as Jehochman says, we live and learn: let's make some articles better together! --Orange Mike | Talk 17:25, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

SHI International Corp
Hi Orangemike, I noticed that our company page has been deleted. Can you please let me know how we can get the page restored so we can improve it? There are plenty of other companies (CDW, PC Mall, Insight Enterprises) with pages similar to what SHI originally had up. If those pages are not in any violation, then please clarify what was wrong with our page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ratchana28 (talk • contribs) 19:52, 11 July 2013 (UTC) — Ratchana28 (talk • contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
- First off: it was never your page. All articles in Wikipedia belong to the Wikimedia Foundation. Second: the article as written was a patchwork of regurgitated press releases and garbage advertising language like "Managed Private Cloud: For customers who must have their cloud hardware reside within their own data center, SHI's Managed Private Cloud come turnkey-ready with what they need to get started in the cloud", unfit for an encyclopedia. It was obviously written by you and people like you who have a conflict of interest and should not be doing anything of the sort; you were not improving it but making it worse. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:02, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Looking at the history of the deleted article, there appear to be some obvious sockpuppets (or meatpuppets), although their activity in the article was some time back.
- By the way, please respond to my email, by reply or action. Thanks. ~Amatulić (talk) 20:10, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
I am curious to understand how a company that does nearly $5 billion in revenue is unfit for an encyclopedia? If there were issues with this page, I am sure those interested in SHI International would like the chance to make their voices heard without being censored. If that page could be restored, I am sure this work would commence. OrangeMack (talk) 21:20, 11 July 2013 (UTC)— OrangeMack (talk • contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
- There is nothing to preclude a new, properly-written article on the subject being written; but the author would have to establish the notability of the subject (we don't judge subjects for "fitness"): see WP:CORP for guidance on how that is established. Obviously, such an article would be watched for potential conflict-of-interest edits. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:25, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

- The proper way for a marketing professional to contribute in this case (in my opinion) is to go to Articles for Creation - disclose your financial connection to the subject as required by law and offer a contributed article for consideration by the site's editors. In most cases, content marketing is not effective here, because it is difficult for marketing professionals to create the content we want when the subject is the company itself and often this results in a disappointing time-suck that goes nowhere. But if a proper article is written and sourced that is up to our standards, they will approve it and move it into article-space. CorporateM (Talk) 12:55, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

PR editor disclosed and used Request Edit, but the content they suggested included stuff like "believed to be the world’s most comprehensive range of exchange-traded commodities." They provided quality sources so I was going to just whip up a quick article, until I realized the sources appear to have been cherry-picked and became de-motivated.
After their disclosed, Talk page approach was ineffective, they have now been edit-warring with me as they attempt to insert blatantly promotional material with trademark symbols and the whole nine yards, both from an IP and from the PR username. I was curious if we could block them or protect the article yet? Or does it have to escalate further?
I find it frustrating that every time I try to "help" a PR person, I end up regretting it and that I have to spend my time fighting off spam and astroturf. CorporateM (Talk) 13:06, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- As I've said before, I fear there is something about the PR trade which deadens the critical faculties necessary to distinguish between legitimate writing and PR garbage (I've been known to use harsher terms than that). --Orange Mike | Talk 14:57, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- It is confusing to PRs as to whether they are required to cover the negative aspects to be a responsible contributor, because we have different expectations than other influencers and those expectations are not made clear in WP:COI.
- It is true that many PRs (including myself not so long ago) have a hard time distinguishing between promotion and encyclopedic copy, but part of the difficulty in addressing the issue is that no statement can be said that accurately applies to every case, so they must be handled individually. CorporateM (Talk) 16:00, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- I noticed your comment about a COI-thanks template. Don't you think it should be a barnstar? I bet it would only take a few minutes to whip it up. CorporateM (Talk) 19:59, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Maybe I'm a big ol' meanie, but I don't want to award barnstars to COI editors, however well-behaved. To me, they are reserved for people who improve this project because they choose to do so, to make Wikipedia and kindred projects better places. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:39, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

- Oh, but Wikipedia is full of meanies, so you fit right in ;-)
- I suppose a journalist would thank a PR person for doing their job well, but not necessarily award them. I'll whip up a quick Talk page template.

Sir, you deleted an article which I wrote. I got no notice that it was being considered for deletion. I can't even access it in order to keep it for my own records. I think this is totally unfair. Eric Kvaalen (talk) 18:49, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

Raymond, Wisconsin
Hi Orangemike-I came across a GNIS for the unincorporated community of Raymond (community), Wisconsin in Racine County]]. The GNIS also had the altenative name of Raymond Center for the unincorporated community of Raymond. I asked TheCatalyst31 to do an infobox for the unincorporated community of Raymond and to take a look at the Raymond Center, Wisconsin article. In the early history of Wisconsin you may have ghost towns but a few miles away have a community by the same name that exists to this day since these communities were started, then abandon and then restarted in an another area. - (talk page stalker) The article is reasonably neutrally-written, but does not contain any reliable sources. I am partial to nominating it for deletion, unless the author can find additional, independent, credible source material. However, I believe it represents a good faith effort to follow our rules and that when an author shows the capability to write neutrally, we shouldn't treat them like spammers, but as a PR person who just didn't know the rules or the ethical considerations, but will follow instructions when provided them. CorporateM (Talk) 12:05, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Pretty adequately written, just fails to assert or to provide evidence of any kind of notability; took it to AfD. Corp, you may want to put your template before rather than after the custom-written part of a message on a talk page. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:21, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

- There are several categories for speedy deletion: the one you linked to, for example, falls under G11: unambiguous copyright violation. There's also G12:Unambiguous promotion and advertising (unsalvageable). These all fall under the realm of the Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, qq.v. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:30, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Orangemike. I saw that you were involved with a COI editor at this article a few months back [9]. Looks like a new account is at it again, blanking a properly sourced section as an attempt to cleanse the BLP. COI
Hi Mike. Sorry to bother you, but I seem to have a problem getting through to a COI editor on one issue. We are currently involved in a heated debate about images on the article 17-Mile Drive and the editor seems to be refusing to accept the consensus of editors about image changes. He keeps edit warring there to keep images the way he prefers on that page, but at Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, he is challenging the removal of an image he had placed there that I believe violates our COI policy in regards to a direct connection to the image being added. The editor had identified themselves at one point and then removed all information and requested that I not mention them by name. I am respecting that here, however I feel the promotional nature of the image being placed there is not something usual for city articles. It also seems undue weight to give a space to a single production and if such an image were to be placed, a more neutral editor should add it.--Amadscientist (talk) 18:47, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- Oops. You have no e-mail option. How would you like to proceed? Is there another administrator you feel I should e-mail?--Amadscientist (talk) 18:50, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- Would you say that, if a true connection has been confirmed and the editor is placing images they are connected to in a paid capacity or in a manner that is purely promoting themselves and their entities, should a template be added to this page?--Amadscientist (talk) 18:53, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

- In the past where a COI editor has been disruptive to my editing, they have been swiftly blocked and I've always been appreciative of that. Your Richard Dewhurst hook is too long
Hi, regarding your DYK nomination of Richard Dewhurst: according to the rules, the maximum allowable length of a hook is 200 characters (with shorter generally preferable). Your hook is 348, so it needs some major trimming before it's acceptable. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 20:33, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
Here's a possible hook, which is 199 characters:
- ... that Richard Dewhurst served in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a member of four political parties—Republican, Union, Liberal Reform and Independent—and was defeated twice when running as a Democrat?
Or, since shorter is generally better:
- ... that Richard Dewhurst served in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a member of four political parties, and was defeated twice when running as a fifth?
I'm not suggesting anything on the nomination page myself because, unfortunately, once anyone makes any comment on any nomination, nobody else will touch it, and I don't want to delay this for you. Good luck. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 22:37, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

Advice re Veteran Editor
I was asked by editor Nightscream to comment at Zeitgeist: the Movie. I shared my opinion regarding WP:SPS, it didn't agree with Nightscream's. Then Nightscream went after me personally with a series of what I consider attacks.( "Chicken", "dishonest", "pretending" etc...) This disturbed me. I asked on his talk page for them to be stricken. He has instead doubled down. My questions are; Should I just drop this and avoid this editor? Am I wrong thinking these were personal attacks?
I had thought we were to avoid personal remarks in discussions and concentrate of policy and content. This is an admin, and a veteran editor. Perhaps he is in the right and I am misunderstanding NPA. Capitalismojo (talk) 16:06, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Even if your grammar is sometimes incorrect. :-) Bearian (talk) 16:08, 31 July 2013 (UTC)- It should be "She and her," not "Her and her...." Some residents of Upstate New York speak a dialect whereby "them folks" and "you guyes" drink "pop" and use possessive pronouns where ordinary ones prevail in Standard American English; Selkirk is a typical upstate hamlet. Bearian (talk) 17:46, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- I did not introduce that gratuitous possessive into that sentence. I will admit to the intermittent use of "you guys" or even "yous guys" (both gender-neutral nowadays) in demotic conversations here in Milwaukee, where Upstate and Irish influences mingled long before the Forty-Eighters mutated the city's culture so uniquely. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:52, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

- It should be "She and her," not "Her and her...." Some residents of Upstate New York speak a dialect whereby "them folks" and "you guyes" drink "pop" and use possessive pronouns where ordinary ones prevail in Standard American English; Selkirk is a typical upstate hamlet. Double-headed eagle: care to comment?
Greetings!
There is an ongoing discussion at Talk:Double-headed eagle#Further comments regarding which images should be included in the image gallery at Double-headed eagle#Examples. As the current discussion is between only two editors (myself a Direktor), I think the discussion would benefit from the opinion of an uninvolved editor. I will understand if you're too busy, but I would appreciate it if you could take the time to offer your comments. Thank you. Wilhelm Meis (☎ Diskuss | ✍ Beiträge) 03:42, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Block
Hi Orangemike, and thanks for responding to my report at usernames for admin attention so quickly. However, DebSoc Exeter has been talking to me, see here and User talk:DebSoc Exeter. Do you think he should be unblocked and get a name change, or that it is just a promo account? Thanks, Matty.007 19:55, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) They have only made 20 edits so rather than go through the rigmarole of changing names, they can just create a new name that complies with policy, without prejudice of course to any new account being blocked if they are just here to spam.--ukexpat (talk) 20:01, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- You will notice that despite my reputation as an evialll deletionist, I have declined the speedy-deletion nomination for the article, despite its COI origins. As the expat says, they can set up a new account under the rules offered at the block notice. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:33, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker)I noticed that the article only has three references and two are authored by the university. A Google News Archives search pops up empty and most of the article is unsourced original research. Also, any sourced content would probably be better placed on University of Exeter. My thought would be to AfD it. CorporateM (Talk) 02:06, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
Iowa unincorporated communities categories
Hi-Some editor is creating categories of Iowa unincorporated communities by county. The problem is there are only 165-170 Iowa unincorporated communities articles. Categories are needed to help the reader navigate Wikipedia but too many categories can cause confusion with the reader. I got very concerned about this because I would put the WP Wisconsin template on talk pages of categories relating to Wisconsin and Milwaukee so we can keep track of them and there were many Wisconsin-Milwaukee related categories. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 11:12, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
Wisconsin unincorporated communities categories by counties
One of the editors has started more categories of Wisconsin unincorporated communities categories by counties. I left a comment asking that this be stopped and the categories taken down until this is resolved. The problem is too many categories on Wikipedia. Thnak you-RFD (talk) 18:21, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

References help
Hi Orangemike. Do you think you could help me out with an article in my sandbox? I'm trying to add this reference but for some reason can't code it in properly. This is the link I want to add: http://personaldemocracy.com/company-reviews-2010/ddc-advocacy
Do you think you could help me out? Ficoman86 (talk) 08:37, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- That reads too much like an advertisement, and I would view it as failing tests of reliable sourcing. What is the article you are trying to improve? --Orange Mike | Talk 12:21, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- The article I am trying to improve is in my sandbox right now. It's about DDC Advocacy. My main goal in writing it was to use a neutral tone throughout the page, but I guess it ended up sounding like an advertisement. How could I rewrite it to sound less like an advertisement, but still get information about the company across? Ficoman86 (talk) 07:11, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
- There is neither assertion nor evidence of notability; there are footnotes to press releases (notoriously not a reliable source; and there is way too much trivia and fluff in the infobox, which looks like it was taken verbatim from the company website (nobody cares who their deputy assistant director for East Coast logistics is). Read and absorb our definition of a notable company. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:25, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

E. C. Smith (Green Lake County)
- shrug* Honestly, makes no difference to me either way. I just thought the word "American" looked odd there without a noun to modify. And to me, he was a politician, however briefly. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:50, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
- I feel that the term should be reserved for people whose career centered around public office, as opposed to those whose lives briefly impinged on politics. Still: no big deal either way. I just hope to find out more about him than I have been able to uncover so far. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:52, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure why your response had to be so acrimonious, and I see that you appear to have some sort of stance against perceived marketing on Wikipedia-which is perfectly valid-but it was meant to be a personal writing project for my own use, and I'd just like it back. --Simfan34 (talk) 18:52, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
- Not done and will not be done We don't permit marketing in Wikipedia; we don't permit hoaxes; and we don't permit the use of our facilities to host personal projects. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:50, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

E.C. Smith
Hi-I did find a brief biographical sketch of E.C. Smith of Green Lake County, Wisconsin who served in the Wisconsin Asssembly in 1889-1892. See Wisconsin Blue Book 1891, Biographical Sketch of E.C. Smith, pg. 592. There was no mention of previous legislative service prior to 1889 so we can assumed E.C. Smith of Rock County was a different person. Do you think this should be deleted? --Simfan34 (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
- Not unless there's a reason to do so. Where did the outline map come from? If it's a public domain source, and all you did was the lettering and modification of lines as needed, then I don't see why it needs to go. If the original outline is not public domain, then copyright issues could apply. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:22, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Orangemike, I think the tab where I was posting a note to you disappeared, so apologies for doing this out of order. I've unblocked this editor (blocked by you for a promotional username on 29 July), on the condition that they not edit about a musician named Jimmy Gross (see Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jimmy Gross). The username apparently matches the subject because the editor is the son of the subject - so it's their name too. I don't know that Jimmy Gross is notable enough for an article, but have asked Grossmusic to provide whatever sources they have so I can have a look. If there are no sources, oh well - no article, and this editor can go do minor edits here and there, as they have in the past. And if there are sources, maybe an article (not written by this guy) would work. Either way, I'll watchlist this user's talk page and attempt to keep them out of trouble (and away from their father's article). UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 12:35, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- I'm suspecting that "Gross Music" may be the name of Jimmy Gross's publishing company, as that's an onomastic pattern very common in the music industry (I used to live on Music Row in Nashville; my landlady was an unsuccessful singer, one of the other roomers was a producer for Three Dog Night, etc.). There was a "Gross Music Co." back in the 1960s run by a Murray Gross; and in the 1940s, a "Gross Music House" run by a George Gross. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:42, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- That could be - AGF has burned me before. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 13:41, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Animoto and Brad Jefferson
Hi Orangemike, I would like to know why the pages Brad Jefferson and Animoto were deleted? I would like to be able to edit the page that existed. Do you have suggestions, so that it won't be deleted again? I need help finding good references for both pages.
Thanks, Messier83 (talk) 17:43, 8 August 2013 (UTC)Messier83
- Animoto was deleted because it was the latest in a series of promotional blurbs, steaming with garbage language straight from the subject's own websites, like "The software automatically turn photos, video clips and music into stunning video slideshows. The patented software and high-end motion design offers scalable solutions for consumers and professionals alike, enabling them to preserve memories or promote a business through video. Animoto videos have the visual energy of a music video and the emotional impact of a movie trailer." It had no place here. Brad Jefferson was deleted because it was a redirect to a now-deleted page. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:16, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Is there any chance that you can recreate the page, and for me to edit it so that it doesn't use the same garbage language? I am a new user, so I might need some help with this.
Messier83 (talk) 18:19, 8 August 2013 (UTC)Messier83
- If you're really convinced that this company is notable enough to merit an encyclopedia article about it, you'd probably be better off starting from scratch. Try reading Wikipedia:Your first article for some guidance. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:24, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
