Question from KiltedKangaroo (07:28, 2 December 2024)

G’day! I had a few questions regarding mentoring. I was wondering, is it better for me to contact you directly or to present my questions to the teahouse forum? I was also wondering if mentoring was just a beginner's thing or could I contact you (or post on the forum) even further down the line? Cheers! --KiltedKangaroo (talk) 07:28, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi KiltedKangaroo. To the best of my understanding, the mentoring set up is an informal process in that new accounts are assigned a mentor at random, but they're not limited to only asking their mentor questions. So, feel free to ask for help at either the WP:THQ or WP:HD if you have general questions or at any of the noticeboards listed at WP:PNB if you've got more specific questions about certain things. You can also post questions here if you want. I'll try to answer them if I can or direct you to a better place to ask them if I can't. Regardless of what you ask and where you ask it, please remember that everyone (including you yourself) is a WP:VOLUNTEER who sometimes may get WP:BUSY; this means the answers you get may vary from person to person, and the time it takes for you to receive a response may also vary. You should also try to avoid peppering multiple pages with the same question (i.e. a taking shotgun approach) for the same reasons, particularly if you're just shopping around for an answer that you might like. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:29, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from GUmball910 (07:41, 22 December 2024)

Why does Wikipedia have mentors? --GUmball910 (talk) 07:41, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

@GUmball910: I'd imagine it has to do with someone less experienced with Wikipedia being able to ask questions from someone who's more experienced if the former starts having problems. For example, your post at Talk:Luigi Mangione wasn't really in accordance with Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines and Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Article talk pages are intended to be places to discuss ways to improve the Wikipedia article they correspond to; they're not really intended to be places for general discussion about the subject of the article. Anyway, there's more information on why this particular mentor program was established found at Wikipedia:Growth Team features. If you've got specific questions about how it has been set up, you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Growth Team features. If you've got general questions about Wikipedia editing, you can ask them here, at the Wikipedia:Teahouse or at the Wikipedia:Help desk. If you've got questions about something that's not related to Wikipedia, you can try Wikipedia:Reference desk. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:08, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

My apologies for not getting to your request sooner, but I see that the noticeboard got to it. You were correct in your guess at the noticeboard post, I've been visiting family for Christmastime and thus spending most of my time away from my computer apart from early mornings and late evenings, so I haven't had a ton of time and have been quite prone to forgetting to come back to things later if I wasn't able to deal with them immediately. It got dealt with, so no foul, but I just wanted to let you know I wasn't actively ignoring you or anything like that. Bearcat (talk) 13:57, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

@Bearcat: No need for an apology. I assumed you were just busy with other things. The pinged at AN was just as a courtesy and not because I felt you were late in responding. I meant to update you on your user talk as well, but just got distracted by something else. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:35, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
