A question on desysopping

Here, you say desysopping is a permanent sanction. But here, ArbCom says it may be reversed, and apparently quite easily. Were you wrong, or was there a change? I have never dealth with any WP Admin issues before. Somercet (talk) 08:01, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Two questions concerning milhistbot

I have a pair of questions for you concerning milhistbot: could the bot also track the nominators of successful A-class articles and list those contributors to help us track editors eligible for our various A-Class Medals, and if so could the bot also track FA/GA nominations in the same way? TomStar81 (Talk) 04:19, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

The Bot works out who the nominators are, and updates the A-class medal tracking accordingly. When it gets to three, it scrubs that and creates an appropriate A-class medal nomination (oak leaves, swords or diamonds). It could track FACs and GAs too, but there are no medals for these. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:33, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
I know, how about tracking ACR/PR/FAC reviewers for the content review awards (if you haven't anything better to do)...?! ;-) Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 05:03, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Seriously, tracking ACR/PR/FLC/FAC/GA reviewers for the awards is the most time-consuming job we currently have (now that ACRs and the Announcements page are sorted thanks to Milhistbot). ;-) Regards, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 05:10, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
That's exactly what I was going to ask: can we track the entire milhist related PR/GAN/ACR/FAC/FPC material so we can rest assured that our members get the recognition they deserve, becuase quite frankly, doing by hand (like I'm doing now) is a royal pain in my fingers. And eyes. And back. And other associated body parts that get heavily taxed during such extended times on Wikipedia. But not the ears, because I've got an outstanding hour and change collection of classical music conducted by the Philadelphia Symphony that I listen to for such occasions, and it makes these tedious works just so much easier :) TomStar81 (Talk) 06:38, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, we can do that. Hawkeye7 (talk) 07:13, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Nice work, but why change the reference format when WP:Retain should apply? FWiW Bzuk (talk) 08:19, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

As to maintaining reference formats, there is no directive that citation or bibliographical templates are the "standard", neither being sanctioned nor accepted as such. "fixing the references" as was noted, is not necessary nor mandated; this change merely represents your chosen use of a style guide. Over the last 10 years, the Wiki editors who created the templates, left in many "bugs" including that of second authors, that interfere with the output of the standard formatting that a reader would see. Most of the problems stem from simply the computer dictum of "garbage in, garbage out". The vast majority of wikipedia editors are not trained reference librarians or editors, subsequently, the templates were created as an aid, but many editors are not even aware that a wide range of templates are being employed, nearly all of them written in the APA (American Psychological Association) or simplified variant of it. The APA style guide is widely used in research papers at academic institutions for the Sciences, but the usual style guide for the Humanities and in most publishing, is the MLA (Modern Language Association)/Chicago style for bibliographic notations. Since the vast majority of what I edit is in the Humanities, i.e. history, I tend to use that style guide whenever possible. The Wiki templates do not accommodate the MLA formatting, and although they can be modified to output in MLA, most editors would not be able to make those changes. What can be done is to "scratch catalog" the "tracings" which markup does allow and will format properly. Now, just to assuage your notion that you are dealing with a Luddite, I have been using templates for cataloguing for over 30 years, with the introduction of automation in libraries, where I worked as a reference librarian and later, author and editor for publishing houses. The typical MARc record template, however, was "bullet-proof" and has been in use for decades. Whenever an article has a hodgepodge of referencing problems, it is often easier to institute a consistent style. Using templates may seem like the simple choice, but, in reality, it is often the one issue that is the hardest to correct to output properly. Understanding the MLA and Harvard citation style guides is not for the neophyte or casual editor, so templates will have to suffice. The cataloguing/referencing issue may already be a moot point as I see that the article has been already reverted to a previous version. I would be happy to continue this dialogue, if you choose. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 08:26, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
I wasn't changing the reference format; I was expanding the article and making sure that everything was referenced. The article has more than doubled in size. I retained the language variant as US English per WP:ENGVAR and WP:RETAIN, the date format as MDY per WP:DATERET and the layout per WP:MOSFILM. I thought everything looked the same as before. I am not an editor or a librarian; I am a historian, so I don't use MLA or APA. I use the templates But if it bugs you, you can reformat the references. I never thought you were a neo-Luddite, although I was surprised that "film" is preferred over "movie", as movies are no longer shot on film. I hope we can work together to get the article through GA. Regards. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:21, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
"Movie" has been relegated to the trash bin, mainly by convention in the Wiki: Film group. It figures that "film" is not the best choice, but is more adaptable in language as productions can be "filmed" but rarely "movied". The Wiki: Aviation group has also grappled with the similar colloquialisms of "plane/airplane/aeroplane" and made a similar decision to use the mainly imprecise "aircraft" default. As to referencing, the choice to use templates does indeed change the style guide from the MLA which was previously in use to the APA style guide which the Wiki templates output. I have tried for years to get the template creators to create a MLA variant to no avail. My problem with templates is that they are most often poorly understood by the casual editor and end up with some of the problems associated with EPA style such as second and third authors, date of first publication, or editions and that the author is associated with the date of publication rather than the publisher. Only within recent changes was the place of publication even considered. Trying to shoehorn media or non-print resources really shows up the inadequacies of the templates. As to what style to retain, I can live with the templates, as the GPA and GA reviewers invariably have no idea about any other referencing or bibliographical notations. For example, the use of second author in every style guide I know is written as first name, last name but then the templates treat the tracing as last, first name. Before my foray into the editing of this article, I had actually seen the film on TCM, began a few small changes but "fixed" the referencing style to "my own taste" much as what has happened again, however, since the article is not one that I have an abiding interest in or investment, my further contributions will be to assist in its development and possible candidacy for GA/FA review. As to my background in librarianship, it's a bit of Comme ci, comme ça; I also dabble in history as the editor of an online history site, and previously the editor of an aviation publication. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 15:50, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
I have been working my way systematically through the Manhattan Project articles. Most involve citing scientific and academic papers. The problem I have with the GA reviewers is that they demand a very high degree of consistency, which is hard for me to achieve with hand coding. But now that the citation template has been completely rewritten in Lua, it should be possible to add additional options. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:31, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

I understand your rationale for editing, but let me give you a "for instance". Recently, another editor asked me to "workup" The Secret Invasion which after some research, resulted in a revision of the article, much like I had done with The Beginning or the End. (Note: I have actually added more content than any other editor as per the edit history of The Beginning or the End article). Now after all that work, if someone had come along and begun to un-do the effort because they wanted to establish a referencing style of their own, I would likely be peeved, so would any other editor.

BTW, I have passed GA/FA reviews with my relying on a combination of MLA/Harvard Citation styles, I simply do not engage often in that type of work, as, depending on the reviewer, it can become a lengthy and convoluted exercise. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 02:28, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Info for Milhistbot

Hi Hawkeye, just in case it might screw around with Milhistbot, I just wanted to point out that I've archived a couple of years worth of ACM awards to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Awards/ACR/Archive 3. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 00:24, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Hawk, it appears Milhistbot has hit this hurdle, it has autonommed Rupert for an ACM instead of whatever it is he should be getting, probably because Rupert's last award is on the Archive page. Regards, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 00:26, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Zawed's was also wrong, but that might have been because his first ACM wasn't on the master list... Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 03:21, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Fixed My apologies. I should have done this earlier but forgot about it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:16, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Possible Milhistbot glitch

G'day Hawk. I've noticed that Milhistbot seems to be resetting CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder/GA3 to CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder/GA2 on the Announcements page, per this. Is there something that can be done about that? It was a problem in the pre-bot days, as ppl would forget to add a |2 or |3 after the article name when they listed it on the Announcements page. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 12:34, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

The problem is that the Bot goes looking for the latest review. It finds Talk:CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder/GA2 exists but that Talk:CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder/GA3 does not, and concludes incorrectly that GA2 is the current one. It needs to look instead at the Talk page and extract the page number from the GA nominee template. Hawkeye7 (talk) 00:08, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
Fixable? Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 13:25, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
Sure, but not until I get back home. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:38, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
No worries, I'll update it manually after the bot runs until then. Thanks, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 23:08, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Fixed The bot now parses the GAN template on the talk pages. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:21, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Another opBOTunity...

Happy New Year, Hawkeye! UcuchaBot has been down for some time now. I've sent a couple of emails to Ucucha about it (among other things) but nothing's happened so I think it's time to look into possible replacements. The bot did four main FA-related tasks, namely bolding TFAs on WP:FA, adding a notice to FAC nominations by WikiCup participants, moving the "Older nominations" marker on WP:FAC, and notifying nominators of upcoming TFAs. All of these have been or are being done manually by various editors in the bot's absence but of course it'd be great to get them automated again. The catalyst for me asking now is WikiCup 2015 starting, and if you do think you'd like to have a go at replacing UcuchaBot's functions, the WikiCup check would be my first priority. Anyway, I know there's plenty of requests on your plate, let me know about this one when you get a chance... Tks/cheers, 12:50, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello Hawkeye7, thanks for taking an interest in the above article however your edits have caused a slight problem with the heading of the reference section. I tried to remove the 0em preceding it but although the heading was reinstated, further problems were caused with the reference list. Hope you are able to take a look. No, no it is fine. I just accidentally re-ran the old code instead of the new. It's all about matching the MILHIST template on the talk page. Originally, it was going too wide, and matching any page that mentioned MILHIST, generating a false positive. Now I made it narrower, and it matched WikiProject Military History and MILHIST, but some articles use WPMILHIST. Could you please unblock? I will immediately re-run with the new version. Template:Article history

Hi Hawkeye. :) This is just to let you know that Template:Article history is about to be converted to Lua. There shouldn't be any changes that would affect FACBot when the new version gets rolled out, but there is some discussion of changing some of the parameter names at some point in the future. ("dykdate2" and "dykentry2" would be changed to "dyk2date" and "dyk2entry" to match the action and ft parameters. The same would go for parameters starting with "otd" and "itn".) See the discussion at Template talk:Article history#Lua version now ready for more details, and if you could comment there as well it would be appreciated. Also, let me know if you have any feature requests for the module (it's at Module:Article history). Best — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 03:12, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

My talk comments

Hawkeye -

I have been getting a lot of grief from SummerPhD over my talk page comments so I thought I would discuss this here since I don't know what I have permission to say. Apparently I am not allowed to ask questions, as the act of asking questions is stating an 'opinion'. I can see where some of what I have said might be construed that way, but asking a question?
Regarding the debate over the atomic bombing of Japan.
That would seem to be common sense but in Ryuichi Shimoda et al. v. The State (1963), a Japanese court ruled otherwise.
Is the ruling of a Japanese court considered valid? Aside from the fact that the victims typically are the first ones to cry foul, it is not an international court and thus it's opinions are only enforceable in Japan?
Even the international court (read Nuremburg) has problems with validity due to some capricious and arbitrary decisions. Jokem (talk) 21:43, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
Talk pages are strictly for discussion of the articles and not their subject. So yo cannot go on asking questions. Also, many of the answers you seek could be found by reading the articles. Take SummerPhD's advice to heart before you get into trouble. But the rules are different here on a User:Talk page.
I am not an expert on international law, but I presume that it is the same as our system, where the decision of a lower court stands unless and until it is overturned by a higher court. And Ryuichi Shimoda has been held as valid in Japan and the United States. For the purpose of the article, that is all that we need. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:41, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your response Hawkeye, and also for presenting it without Stentorian undertones. Jokem (talk)

Third Opinion

I don't know if you are the right one to ask this, but since I have been getting grief from this SummerPhD person, I thought I might ask how to go about this.
see here

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:SummerPhD

The responses have gotten more and more terse, so at this point I am concluding I need to either give up on being a Wiki editor, or find a third party to get this resolved.

Not really vandalism, but looked like it...

I reverted your uncommented change of middle initial at PUREX as vandalism, before realizing it was probably serious. Trouble is, Herbert H. Anderson and Herbert L. Anderson look like maybe two different people. There's nothing in the Herbert L Anderson bios about PUREX, and the PUREX patent clearly shows Herbert H. Anderson. Of course, the latter could be an error and maybe they really are one person. Do you have more info on this? Dicklyon (talk) 20:59, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

The patent says Herbert H. Anderson was in Newton Mass (as the application date 1947, perhaps?). Herbert L. Anderson's bio doesn't show him ever in Mass., and as far as I can tell not ever at the same place/time as co-inventor Asprey. So let's leave them as two different names. Dicklyon (talk) 21:07, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Ah, this is definitive. Seaborg says Herbert H. Anderson was in his Met Lab group, which is where Asprey was. Maybe there's enough for an article on H.? Dicklyon (talk) 21:11, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

FAR bot processing

Hawkeye, did you see my query at Wikipedia talk:Featured article review/Coordination? Nikkimaria just closed a couple, that are in the February archive, so I'm wondering if your bot is ready to process them? Bst, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:05, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello. I see FACBot ran about 11 hours ago, but it didn't run through two demoted articles: Celine Dion and 2012 tour of She Has a Name. Did I do something wrong when I closed them? Thanks. DrKiernan (talk) 11:14, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
The FACBot runs FAR on a separate script to minimise the amount of trouble if something hits a snag. I think I only set it running on autopilot yesterday, so the next run of the FAR script would not be for another three hours. I've ordered it to run now while I am watching. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:26, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Michael S. Tucker, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Private. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Martin D. Whitaker reference question

I've approved your DYK on Martin D. Whitaker, although I did just want to pop over to check something on one of your references. The Hewlett & Anderson ref is cited to pages 207–208. Am I misreading things in that source, or should it be 210–211? Didn't want to change it myself just in case I'm the one misreading something. Regardless, your DYK should be good to go. Squeamish Ossifrage (talk) 15:32, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

No, that is correct,. I have corrected the reference. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:41, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
Glad I could help ... and glad that's one of the sections I picked to thoroughly spot-check against the reference. Our default editing areas aren't very similar (although there actually is some overlap between military history and silent film, surprisingly enough!), but let me know if there's ever anything I can lend a hand with. Squeamish Ossifrage (talk) 20:03, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
Well now that you've mentioned it, I have one article on a film, The Beginning or the End, which is currently at WP:GAN waiting for someone to review it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 02:17, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Notability hit counts

Hi. In the Ahmad Keshvari deletion discussion you mentioned that you ran a Google search and "got thousands of hits a plethora of images". Can you please explain in which manner you see Google hit counts as translating into notability per WP:NOTABILITY?--Anders Feder (talk) 01:25, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

They do not indicate notability. But the OP said he could not find anything with a Google search. The reason is that Google does not correctly handle searches in non-Latin scripts. Hawkeye7 (talk) 01:47, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
That was actually not what he said. He said he could not find anything on "Google Books, Google Scholar, Questia and High Beam", which are other engines than the standard Google web search you did. Furthermore, the subject's last name literally translates to "state" or "country"[35], while his first name (in Latin script: "Ahmad") is extremely common in the Middle East. By searching for احمد کشوری, you are merely hitting all the pages containing the Farsi equivalents of "Ahmad" and "country". Anyway, thanks for explaining.--Anders Feder (talk) 02:03, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Since we loathe each other, I don't expect a reply. But I noticed an obit yesterday in the SMH for this remarkable man. He's mentioned in Burma Railway, but that's about all. He would be an interesting and worthy topic for a new article, if you're inclined. Wrote two books, too. Tony (talk) 02:37, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

He already has some red links, but no article. I can create one. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:10, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

rfA

just as a concerned onlooker, I am a little concerned about the nature of your question on the ongoing Rfa. Perhaps you might want to remove it, or reword it to pick a somewhat different example. DGG ( talk ) 21:11, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Do you have a better example in mind? I could think of some real-life examples of far more egregious behaviour, but I wanted an one that was sufficiently borderline as to make one think. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:37, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
borderline in what sense--I would think that it was so far away from our proper sphere, that it seems to actually suggest it is aimed at someone doing this. When we talk about off wiki behavior of admins, we usually mean not things disgraceful in a general sense, but off wiki behavior directly harming WP, such as using an off-wiki forum to identify an editor. (just my personal take on it) . But there's no need for us to pursue it. DGG ( talk ) 01:21, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Questioning a revert

Not sure how "MOS Soldier" applies as justification for reverting my removal of the wiki-link from a red-link in today's feature article? I didn't ask for the page to be deleted; I just removed a broken link. I did due diligence that there's not another article for a matching Thomas Roderick in the mainspace, nor one immediately apparent in draft or AFC. Am I missing something?

It was not broken, it was just a red link. Per Wikipedia:Red link: red links help Wikipedia—they encourage new contributors in useful directions, and remind us that Wikipedia is far from finished. Per WP:SOLDIER general officers are presumed notable. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:32, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Boat Race reviews

The Running Man Barnstar
Hey Hawkeye7, just a quick barnstar to say thanks for the reviews of Boat Race articles you've conducted over the past year. As of this morning, I completed my (initial) goal of ensuing that every Boat Race had, not only its own article, but one that was either of GA or FA status: we now have 158 GAs and 3 FAs that we can all be proud of! It doesn't stop here, for me at least, I'm going to keep up with improving the quality of the GAs and look for more FA opportunities. Plus, there's the small matter of 70 Women's Boat Race articles to get up and running! But thanks again, I couldn't have done it without your help. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:47, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Piping titles

Hello, Hawkeye! I didn't mention this point at your current FAC because it is purely a matter of personal opinion, on which the Manual of Style is silent. To my eye it breaks the flow of the prose and fractionally disrupts the reader to leave a knight's "Sir" out of the piping. Example: Major General Hastings Ismay, who consulted with Sir Henry Tizard, which I think would flow better as: Major General Hastings Ismay, who consulted with Sir Henry Tizard. A bit more work for the editor, but easier on the reader's eye, I think. Entirely your choice, naturally, but I thought I'd mention it here for your consideration. Best wishes, Tim riley talk 14:44, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Support request with team editing experiment project

Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from User:Micru on meta.

Kinsella v. Krueger

The fist trip to the Supreme Court has a bizarre procedural status. Kinsella did not seek cert, the US Government did (the named party in the District Court case). The bizarre part is that the Supreme Court granted the writ before the 4th Circuit heard the appeal. Especially unusual in that the District Court order was only a preliminary one. I've corrected the appropriate section and added a citation. --Lineagegeek (talk) 23:23, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:34, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Biographies of physicists

Hi, Hawkeye7,

I saw your comment on another editor's talk page mentioning an interest in editing articles about physicists. I see from your user page you have a huge content contribution history and a lot of interest in military history, recently including the history of the Manhattan Project. In my youth I read a lot about the Manhattan Project and recently I have had a mind to update biographies on physicists who have won Nobel prizes. I have been gathering sources about some physicists, using resources available to me from the Wikipedia Library online database access program and from the huge public and academic libraries in my town. Which biographies do you think best deserve some updating? I'd be happy to work collaboratively with you on updating some articles about physicists. I've watchlisted a few of those for years, and I'm disappointed at how bad some Wikipedia articles on Nobel laureates still are, even though reliable sources about those persons are abundant. Please let me know how I can help. See you on the wiki. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 15:53, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi! As part of improving the articles on the Manhattan Project, I want to bring the biographies of all the participants who won the Nobel Prize up to at least GA level. Most have been done, but three remain: Aage Bohr, Val Fitch and Richard Feynman. I am proposing that we work through them in this order. The first two should be relatively straightforward. Bohr's article looks okay, but lacks references. Assuming that it is not a copyvio, we should be able to fix it up by adding references and some more facts (such as his death). Fitch's article has references, but is very sparse. Some rewriting is required. Feynman has an article that is both discouragingly large and unreferenced. There is plenty of literature about him, but cleaning up the article will be a lot of work. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:24, 10 May 2015 (UTC)
Good. Great minds run in the same rut. I have the Gleick biography of Feynman at hand, as that was one article I have had watchlisted for a long time. I'll look at the other two and see what I can do to help on each one in turn, probably the most for the Feynman article. Thanks for letting me know about your plans. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 02:41, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

Richard Feynman article

Hi, Hawkeye7,

I see you maintain a rapid tempo of updating articles. I was very busy in my off-wiki life in the last few days, and meanwhile books I requested from the library about Richard Feynman have arrived at my home office. I've read some of the those books before, and what I plan to do now is an off-wiki draft as if there had never been an article about Feynman here before, dipping into multiple sources in turn, so as to produce a coherent, NPOV, complete draft of a Feynman biography article in my user space. I'll send you that link as I begin the draft expansion, and at some point I'll say, "That's enough," and then let you do as you wish in terms of using any or none of the draft I produce to update the mainspace article. I'm doing this because I'm curious to see how your experienced editorial judgment is applied to my effort to produce a "fresh start" draft of an article that has long had low-grade edit warring. Whatever you do with the draft I produce will be informative for how to do some similar fresh start drafts for biography articles about other deceased scientists, something I've had in mind to do for a long time. Thanks for your patience with my slower process of producing articles. Keep up the good work. See you on the wiki. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 19:00, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

I've brought Aage Bohr and Val Fitch up to GA standard. Then on a re-check I found two more Nobel Prize winners, Eugene Wigner and James Franck. So I've been working on the former. For what it's worth, I think creating a new version of the article is a good idea. When you have blocks of text without references, it is hard to tell if there is a COPYVIO, so you wind up having to rephrase it. The effect is similar to a rewrite, and I've often thought it takes longer. In common with many scientist articles, most of the minor edit warring has been over stupid stuff like whether he was an atheist (and whether this counts as a religion) and whether he should be listed as being Jewish or not. Nothing likely to progress the article towards being coherent, NPOV or complete.
With an abundance of material, an FA article should be possible. I have three books on Feynman:
  • Gleick, James (1992). Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman. Pantheon Books. ISBN 0-679-40836-3. OCLC 243743850.
  • Mehra, Jagdish (1994). The Life and Science of Richard Feynman. New York: Oxford University Press. ISBN 0-19-853948-7.
  • Gribbin, John R.; Gribbin, Mary (1997). Richard Feynman: a life in science. New York: Dutton. ISBN 0-670-87245-8.
Murray Gell-Mann told people at a memorial service that Feynman "surrounded himself in a cloud of myth, and he spent a great deal of time and energy generating anecdotes about himself." (Geick, p. 11) The Gribbins' book is a good example of printing the myth. Feynman's own books have to be treated with great caution. The fact that there is also a play starring Alan Alda doesn't help.(See Kennedy, J. Michael (December 2, 2001). "The Cult of Richard Feynman: His Peculiar Immortality Springs From More Than His Scientific Achievements". Los Angeles Times.) Mehra's book is all about his science, and is packed with equations. Gleick comes somewhere in between. One of my favourite sources is his FBI file (via Wellerstein, Alex (July 11, 2014). "Who smeared Richard Feynman?".); when the light gets shone on one of his anecdotes, the result is something like this. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:00, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your helpful comments on sources. I have most of the standard Feynman biographies (including the popular collections of anecdotes) at hand. One more library run tomorrow should gather up some general reference books about Nobel laureates in physics, for comparison of the various Nobel laureates. I agree with you that sometimes a top-to-bottom rewrite is easier to bring to the level of verifiability expected by Wikipedia policy than extensively copy-editing an existing article. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 04:06, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Query

Hi Hawkeye, I've been mining the copies of the Army List at the Mitchell, inspired by your comment re. Garrett at the assessment request page. I'd earlier assumed that, like the Navy List, you'd only find current postings/seniority and so would have to go though scores of issues to build a complete picture but, lo and behold, there are historical entries, like an Army Who's Who! One thing though, when researching Pollard in the 1962 edition, I found a posting that made no sense to me and perhaps you can help: "GSO3 Trg and Gen Duties 2 DB" -- what was "2 DB"? The book kindly provides glossaries of abbreviations for honours and qualifications, but I couldn't find anything similar for units, branches, etc, so this one left me stumped... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 01:06, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Fermi

Hi, I've just undid your edit on Enrico Fermi. First of all, Segré was not Fermi' student, but he used to take some advice from Fermi. Regarding the citizenship, Italian and American would be the appropriate words. As for the alma mater, scuola normale superior refers to his "secondary education". He is graduated from Sapienza. Hope it's clear. Thanks!

Segré was Fermi's student. See Segré's book A Mind Always in Motion (1993), pp. 48-52. And alma mater refers to the university that someone went to, not the secondary school. Hawkeye7 (talk) 02:36, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
??? In fact it is you to write "secondary school" on his Alma Mater. dO you understand what you're doing?

FACBot template whoopsie

Hello Hawkeye. :) I just came across this edit by FACBot, which added an unclosed {{shy}} template inside an {{article history}} invocation (thereby hiding all the action parameters and putting the template into Category:Article history templates with errors). Could you have a look at it when you have a spare moment? I'm guessing it's an overzealous regex or something like that. Thanks! — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 14:30, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

This is a known problem, and it relates to there being another template inside the article history (in this case a {{shy}}). Last time we decided that this was so rare that we could simply fix it by hand when it occurred. I cannot do anything about it now while I am in China, but will have a go when I get back in two weeks time. Basically, we cannot use a regexp, because we cannot tell where it closes. I will have to parse the whole page counting the braces to ensure that it is processed correctly. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:37, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

The Bot said: "Ian closed it but did not move it to the archive page." After staring at the page for several minutes, I found that when you cut and pasted it to the archive page, "Vision in White" became "Vision In White". Aparently this was due to a page move in June. comment on Clinton Engineer Works (CEW)

I noticed you added a section on power generation, but deleted the (to me, fascinating) detail from The New York Times that CEW/Oak Ridge at one point consumed more than 14% of the electricity generated in the United States. I don't want to battle on your turf, but was curious whether that fact failed your sniff test. Any chance I could put it back in your new section? Vesuvius Dogg (talk) 23:52, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

I noted the reason on the review page. This factoid comes from Kenneth Nichols's (ghost-written) 1987 autobiography, which embarrassed me on another issue on the main Manhattan Project article. The claim has been refuted by recent scholarship. See [245] and [246]. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:39, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
Wow — thanks for that. Looks like the New York Times got it wrong today (and star reporter James Barron no less). Almost makes me wonder if the CEW article could present both this seemingly persistent 14% myth and its well-sourced refutation(s), if only to keep future good faith editors like me from reinserting the bad info again, as it seems to come up in RS. Will the Times run a retraction? They hate doing that, and Barron at least sourced it to a third party. In any event, thanks for your thoughtful and quick explanation. Punctuation

You recently reverted me at Thomas C. Kinkaid with the comment "Consistent use of the straight (or typewriter) apostrophe ( ' ) is recommended, as opposed to the curly (or typographic) apostrophe ( ’ ). " I think you may have your punctuation confused. The article had been using the Prime (symbol), which is inappropriate. "The prime symbol ( ′ ) is commonly used to represent feet (ft), arcminutes (am), and minutes (min)." It is never used for possessives. "The prime symbol should not be confused with the apostrophe." So I changed all the Primes into straight apostrophes, which, as you note, "is recommended." Kendall-K1 (talk) 11:13, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Little Boy / Fat Man

I am familiar with the origin of the descriptives. That fact doesn't alter the fact that neither common nor conventional academic/scholarly usage would support the changes you've made in these instances. You're conflating reference to the type with reference to the individual devices qua individual devices.

That said, Wikipedia has its many conventions, many of which defy common usage, common sense, and academic/scholarly usage.

I won't contest your preference.

Your question on Liz's RfA

Hi. I waited until Liz's RfA and the ensuing 'crat discussion were finished before raising this, so I'm sorry if this now seems like a past issue. But I don't think I'm the only one who thought the candidate question you posed on Liz's RfA was crass, or at least gratuitously indecorous. Creative questioning has its merits, but with respect, I hope you won't be doing this again. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 06:30, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Please don't block me. I was under the impression that the artwork in question, which does have its own article was famous enough for everyone to instantly recognise it. (Failing which, a Google search on "canned shit" would quickly have found it, but I guess I'm thinking like a content creator here.) I was equally surprised that no one mentioned the real-life case that it is so obviously based on. It is part of my Final exam for wikilawyers, an evil version of yours. The scary part was the difference between experienced editors over the meaning of WP:NPA. I was going to seek an opinion on this from you. Hawkeye7 (talk) 00:20, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
No, I never heard of that particular artwork, which I guess makes me a feces-Philistine; and I hadn't seen your exam page, which I will enjoy now. I had actually assumed you were riffing on Russavia's actual troll of JW a couple of years ago, which raised interesting questions in a theoretical sense, but which I dealt with at the time at least for on-wiki purposes in a practical sense. I suppose my point is that something that might make an interesting theoretical discussion in one context, is out of place in the context of an RfA environment that many people already consider problematic, and much less an RfA that was shaping up as a highly contentious one (and the interjection of JW's name didn't help either). Enough said, I think. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 00:44, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

Draftspace

Yeah, I don't think there's any real clarity about it though. The AFC headers do help keep track of drafts that haven't been edited in six months (for G13 issues), else I've had to manually find them out. I think drafts in userspace itself are left alone as long as you're active or else it's up for MFD (which may just move them to draftspace). -- Ricky81682 (talk) 09:27, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Yes, but it doesn't have a reference4 to back it up. I've put my version back for now. Hawkeye7 (talk) 01:53, 15 August 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, you're right. I had a document once that was posted on the Los Alamos veterans site which was apparently written by someone who was there or very close by, who talked with Hemmerly afterwards, and the "reading the newspaper" came from him. Then they reorganized the site and the little essay disappeared. I called the archivist to see whether e could get it back, but she wasn't overly sanguine about it. My thanks for the notification. The link was in a list of the four founding members of the NRDC, to enable a reader to flick through all 4 side-by-side, to see the skills and experience that prompted their selection. To locate Bush required remembering where exactly he was mentioned, in a different context in a different paragraph. In a long 'essay', sometimes that can mean consideration for the reader, rather than a once-is-enough rationing system.

Problems with MediaWiki:Gadget-metadata.js

I did not remove other people's comments. I copied the whole thread, verbatim, to MediaWiki talk:Gadget-metadata.js#Problems since 19 August 2015, in accordance with the documentation for {{moved to}} and {{moved from}}. I did this because at MediaWiki talk:Gadget-metadata.js#Overhaul applied, Nihiltres (talk · contribs) specifically requested that problems be notified on that page. Making a WP:PER is not difficult, all you need to do is add {{edit protected}} together with sufficient information for an admin to address the issue. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:11, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

And when I tried to raise one, you deleted it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:35, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
Per WP:TALK: Avoid posting the same thread in multiple talk pages: This fragments discussion of the idea. Instead, start the discussion in one location, and, if needed, advertise that in other locations using a link. Do not move to another, more obscure page with the objective of suppressing discussion. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:38, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
No, I moved the PER to the proper place, i.e. the talk page of the problem gadget, because you put it at Wikipedia talk:Village pump (technical), which per its box at the top, is "for discussion about the village pump only". Then, it was you that deleted it.
I did not have the objective of suppressing discussion. I wanted it all kept in one place, the place where it all started, several days ago, which is why I intentionally used templates like {{moved to}}, which include links to that place. Haveing a second thread on WP:VPT goes against WP:MULTI.
Here's how a WP:PER works. You make your request on the talk page of the page that has the problem, accompanied by a {{edit protected}} - this puts the talk page into Category:Wikipedia fully-protected edit requests where an admin who is watching that category may see it. Very soon after, AnomieBOT (talk · contribs) adds a row to User:AnomieBOT/PERTable, like this, and also adds a link to the request at {{Admin dashboard}}. Any admin with that dashboard will see the request. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:53, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
The page is obscure; it has less than 30 watchers, so there is no chance of a passing admin fixing the problem. User:AnomieBOT/PERTable isn't much better; there are change requests there weeks old. Perhaps because {{Admin dashboard}} does not show the request; it just tells you that there are 83 of them in the queue. Hawkeye7 (talk) 00:02, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
You don't know that those fewer than 30 watchers are not admins. Since pages in MediaWiki: space may only be edited by admins, the proportion of admins among the watchers is probably quite high.
The reason that there are weeks-old requests in User:AnomieBOT/PERTable may be deduced by examining them: in several cases, there is still debate going on.
{{Admin dashboard}} does not currently show the request, this is true: but it is because you deleted it. If you had not done that, it would be shown, but not among the 83 that you observed. The row with 83 outstanding is for pages in Category:Requested edits, i.e. all pages marked with the {{Request edit}} template (this allows a contributor with a conflict of interest to request an edit from a neutral editor), this is not at all the same thing as a WP:PER. If you had let the {{edit protected}} stand, it would be linked from the row above that 83 (i.e. Wikipedia fully-protected edit requests), whose count is presently 10. A direct link to the protected edit request would also have been displayed, in at least two places: under the heading "Administrative backlog", the same category is listed - to its left is a rightward-pointing blue triangle. If you click that, it expands to list the actual talk pages with outstanding requests. Or you can go down the page to the (misnamed) WP:UAA / WP:RFPP section, below which are some collapsed lists, one of which is headed "Protected edit requests" - if you click "show" there, you'll find User:AnomieBOT/PERTable (as well as User:AnomieBOT/TPERTable which is not relevant here). --Redrose64 (talk) 13:00, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Description of a picture in the Oppenheimer Article

Hallo Hawkeye7,

I have just read the Oppenheimer article and I noticed the picture concerning the Congress for Cultural Freedom's second Berlin conference in June 1960. There are 6 people on the panel, but only 5 names. The name of the person who was not tagged yet, on the right of Willy Brandt or rather the empty chair, is Theodor Heuss. He was the first president of Germany (1949-1959). Hope you can include him in the description.

Have a nice day! Draken87 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Draken87 (talkcontribs) 06:58, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Okay..thank you. Now this statement "The uranium atom was first split by..." is physically and logically false. Can you think of a better way of phrasing it? That was what I was trying to correct (other than the chemist/physicist thing). It is even arguable that since they were not the first to bombard heavy elements with neutrons (altho nearly so) others had induced fission of U235. The point is they recognized (discovered) what had happened. Have fun with trying to say all of that succinctly. And if you are just sitting around hoping to correct me on things...get a life. Juan Riley (talk) 20:50, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
To supplement Hahn's Nobel prize was for: "...his discovery of the fission of heavy atomic nuclei." Juan Riley (talk) 21:11, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
I am not stalking you. I start each day by checking my watch list, which includes all the Manhattan Project articles, and everything tagged under HOPAU. What do you think of this version? "The discovery of nuclear fission by German chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in 1938, and its theoretical explanation by Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch, made the development of an atomic bomb a theoretical possibility." WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Battle of Milne Bay: ULTRA vs. Magic

Hi, Hawkeye7,

Regarding the article "Battle of Milne Bay", I realize that (Drea, 1992) subsumes the U.S. Navy's decryption of JN25 under ULTRA, but I think that the average reader would be misled by the failure to distinguish between the two. I think that the average reader associates ULTRA with the decryption of German military enciphered radio traffic, not with decryption of Japanese naval enciphered radio traffic. A link to Wikipedia's article on ULTRA is therefore a bit misleading. I don't want to descend into an edit war. (This issue isn't that important.) I'm just viewing the issue from the perspective of the average reader, who'll think that the British codebreakers in Bletchley Park warned of the threat against Milne Bay, when they didn't. Best regards, VexorAbVikipædia (talk) 19:59, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Super?

Oppenheimer security hearing is promoted to GA. Very well-written. I think one of my review comments may not have been clear. When I read the sentence, "From 1949 to 1953, Oppenheimer had also found himself in the middle of a controversy over the development of the Super", I did not realize at first what the article meant by "Super". If "Super" was replaced by "H-bomb" it would have been immediately obvious. The word thermonuclear two sentences later and H-bomb farther along cleared it up. When I said to please decipher I didn't mean explain, I meant that Americans won't understand what the term Super means. I'm 61 years old and never heard Super used to describe H-bomb. Djmaschek (talk) 01:22, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

It comes from having too much knowledge of the subject. I first heard about the Super from an old TV series. During a conference on nuclear weapon design in 1942, they spent the first day on the design of a gun-type weapon, then the rest on the design of what they called the "Super" - a bomb using fusion instead of fission. The idea was to use a fission bomb to ignite light elements like hydrogen and lithium. Edward Teller worked on it a Los Alamos through the war, with a host of others including Enrico Fermi, Maria Goeppert-Mayer John von Neumann and Stan Ulam. It turned out that the design was impractical - it really needed a hydrogen bomb to set it off - and wasted a great deal of effort. Just when all seemed lost, Stan Ulam came up with a brilliant idea, which we call the Teller-Ulam design, which is a true H-bomb. See History of the Teller–Ulam design. But the point here is that the term Super was introduced in the first paragraph. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:45, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

In this edit you added some references, some of which use the site book template and included the parameter "nopp" which is normally intended to suppress page numbers but you included, as a parameter, "This is a booklet published by the Australian Sport Commission, has a copyright notice on the page following the cover page."

Attempted to simply remove the parameter, but I'd like to check with you first to see what you are intending to do with that text.

I note that at the completion of that edit there were a number of issues, many of which were resolved but this particular one persist in the current version.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:40, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

Add more references. Every paragraph needs at least one reference covering the facts contained therein. The article when become a B only when it is fully referenced. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:56, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Titan II retirement.

If you know of a source directly tying the incident at Little Rock to the retirement of the Titan II, I'd be happy to add to all three wing articles. However, I believe (not looking at sources) that the decision had more to do with 1. Titan was liquid fueled and took more time to launch than Minuteman. 2. Its guidance system was not as accurate as Minuteman. Tied into this was that at the time, nukes were tending toward lower yield and more accurate systems, and the Titan had about the last of the multi-megaton warheads (I don't know if it was ever MRV'ed, but I'm sure it was never MIRV'ed). 3. The source I used refers to a "strategic modernization program" (lower case, and I didn't find anything formal that would upper case this). At the time the decision was made, I believe both the Midgetman and the mobile Minuteman programs were considered viable, and the expectation was that the Titans could be replaced. But thanks for the look at the note on the lack of competition. I thought it was worth mentioning because "firsts" and "bests" are usually notable, but I felt some perspective was needed. --Lineagegeek (talk) 21:32, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

All three points are valid, and they are why Titan II was marked for replacement in 1971. It soldiered on because of the multi-megaton W-53 warhead. It was never MRV'd. The strategic modernization program was about the deployment of MX, Trident, Pershing II and cruise. The 1978 and 1980 disasters prompted congressional inquiries, which led to the 1981 announcement of the retirement. (There was also something about all the launch codes being given to the Soviet Union by a spy.) Nonetheless, it took until 1987 to get rid of them all. I think the wing articles are fine. OrphanReferenceFixer: Help on reversion

Hi there! I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. Recently, you reverted my fix to Jacob L. Devers.

If you did this because the references should be removed from the article, you have misunderstood the situation. Most likely, the article originally contained both <ref name="foo">...</ref> and one or more <ref name="foo"/> referring to it. Someone then removed the <ref name="foo">...</ref> but left the <ref name="foo"/>, which results in a big red error in the article. I replaced one of the remaining <ref name="foo"/> with a copy of the <ref name="foo">...</ref>; I did not re-insert the reference to where it was deleted, I just replaced one of the remaining instances. What you need to do to fix it is to make sure you remove all instances of the named reference so as to not leave any big red error.

If you reverted because I made an actual mistake, please be sure to also correct any reference errors in the page so I won't come back and make the same mistake again. Also, please post an error report at User talk:AnomieBOT so my operator can fix me! If the error is so urgent that I need to be stopped, also post a message at User:AnomieBOT/shutoff/OrphanReferenceFixer. Thanks! Articles you contributed to have been nominated for Did You Know

WikiCup

As a runner-up in the WikiCup 2013 you will know all about the competition, but I don't think you entered this year. Featured pictures has become a prominent part of the competition, last year and this.

Would you consider reviewing one of my three outstanding nominations at GAN, being Parsnip, Purple heron and Ruddy shelduck? I wouldn't ask, but the final round of the WikiCup is finishing at the end of the month and the position is finely balanced. The present leader has got all his points from Featured Pictures, and he also has a total of 1380 FP bonus points that are not readily apparent on the scoreboard. When FPs are nominated, people support or oppose them, and with sufficient support the image is promoted ten days later. With GAs, it is a much more chancy business as you know, and the nominations may hang around for months before they are reviewed. Feel free to say no if you want too, its a bit cheeky of me to ask. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:34, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

That's okay. I didn't compete in Wikicup in 2014 or 2015 because the high bonuses for FP didn't give me much of a chance. I'll have a look at your articles. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:51, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Manhattan - the TV show

Just curiosity, given the expansive work you've been doing on the real-life Manhattan Project. Has the fictional Manhattan (TV series) made it to your side of the ocean? Segrè

Hallo Hawkeye7
what do you think about the renaming of the article about Emilio Segrè? In Italy he is known as Emilio (we almost never use the second name). Is it different in the U.S.? I refrain from using google count and the like, since the RS are counted as bad ones. Thanks for your opinion, Alex2006 (talk) 11:20, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

In the English-speaking world he is known as Segrè. Almost all famous male scientists are known by the surnames, unless they had a title of nobility. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:25, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
Of course also in Italy it is known as Segrè, I was referring to his double name. I don't think that "Emilio Gino Segrè" is the correct article's name. Alex2006 (talk) 07:08, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
No, the middle name is not used. I don't know why the article was renamed. If you want to move it back, go ahead. Hawkeye7 (talk) 08:34, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! what is the right procedure? Should I ask an admin, or is the rollback by a move automatically possible? Alex2006 (talk) 09:21, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
P.S. Oh-oh...I just see, that the Nobel prize committee calls him Emilio Gino. This is a strong argument for the double name in title. Alex2006 (talk) 09:29, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I won't give advice, but I would not call myself a MILHIST administrator, but rather a coordinator, just not to leave confusion in any minds. For my part, I think you're the kind of candidate for ARBCOM I might get behind. BusterD (talk) 13:28, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

I don't like appealing for things myself. Like page moves, page protections, quick deletes. The absolute limit though, was being told to appeal to myself to finish translating an article into English. Hawkeye7 (talk) 08:11, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Congratulations!

The Military history A-Class medal with diamonds
On behalf of the other coordinators of the Military History Wikiproject, I am hereby award you the A-class medal with diamonds for your efforts in promoting the articles on Clinton Engineer Works, List of United States Army campaigns during World War II, and Calutron to A-Class standard. Well done, and thank you for your continued involvement in Milhist! Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 06:04, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

I could not decide which edit to thank you for so thanks for your expansion of CP-1. I also did not put together that you were also running, at the same time, so double thanks for the work. To the extent it can be cohesive by December 2, that would be appreciated, also. I wonder, a bit at some of the detail, as being possibly too much, but I now fully realize it is work-in-progress. Alanscottwalker (talk) 16:59, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

It has been delayed a few times by other articles like The class the stars fell on coming up for review. I also sidetracked myself by writing A. Arnim White. There is a stack of books a foot high next to my monitor, so CP-1 is getting there. It should be in shape by 2 December (Wednesday). I'll finish it on the3 weekend. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:23, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
All done now. Hawkeye7 (talk) 10:56, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Done Guilty of getting both articles to GA, but I didn't read the intros. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:57, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

From the Recruiter's desk @ The Signpost

Hi Hawkeye, How are you? I'm the recruiter for The Signpost, and I'd like to connect with you regarding a position on our Editorial Board. There's an opening in the Featured Content section and I think you'd be a great fit. I know this is out of the blue, and that you're probably trying to get some well-deserved rest after ACE2015. But after you've had some time to think this over, please let me know if you have questions, and I'll try to answer them (or I'll have one of the other members of the EB do so). If, however, you're busy with other things, or this just isn't your cup of tea, no worries. Best, --Rosiestep (talk) 05:34, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

What does it involve? Hawkeye7 (talk) 08:08, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
There is a bot that pastes in the clerical-type stuff to start with, but it can be (and has been) done by hand. Other than that, it’s a matter of a brief intro sentence or two for each of the FAs and FLs, checking whether the week has brought any new featured topics (not often), and putting in the captions for the FP gallery. However, you can really approach it anyway you like (e.g. maybe some "featured" featured content each week?). The EB isn't emotionally invested in how that works so you would have leeway in developing it. And I am working on recruiting additional editors to the EB so that tasks are shared week by week. How does this sound? (If you have additional questions, @Go Phightins!: or I would be glad to answer them.) --Rosiestep (talk) 14:29, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Everybody with an emtry in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography is presumed notable. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:12, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
Ah, so. Looks like stubs such as this one which were created from the Dictionary could use some building out. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
