GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Non-free rationale for File:Kermit the frog.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Kermit the frog.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 14:51, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Christine, when you reviewed this DYK nomination, you didn't put an icon on your review. These days, an icon is needed to confirm what the decision is: a tick if the article is fully approved (gray tick if approved AGF), or one of the other symbols depending on what kinds of issues it has. Can you please quickly return and indicate which icon the review rates. (If it's good to go, then one of the ticks would be in order.) Many thanks!

(Also, since the automated software notes which articles have been approved by looking for the last icon in the review, please add your icon and sig after the most recent comment. Sorry to have to bother you, and thanks.) BlueMoonset (talk) 00:47, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

HELP!!

Phillip Wilcher is trying to edid his own page.. look on my talk page and look at his wikki page Jena (talk) 01:05, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Jena:

I have addressed a letter to Christine in the hope that I can assist her with any information about my life in music that may be more appropriate to my page here at Wikipedia.

Might I suggest to you in good faith that what you have chosen to know about me is based on media misrepresentation. I have noticed in the past that you have made various derogatory comments about me which directly reflect on my life, my musical credentials and my considerable achievements as a composer. I understand well why you feel the way you do, but your feelings in all honesty, are unfounded because you do not know me personally, nor do I know you. I would like now to sincerely ask you in the spirit of goodwill to cease making such comments in public forums. Please oblige me in my request. I do hope over time that the page here at Wikipedia about me, if it is to remain, reflects me and my work more honestly and fully than it has previously and presently does, and that it stands as a reliable point of reference especially for young students who are required to study my music through varioius exam syllabi here in Austraila.

Jena, I wish you well and trust all will be well.

Blessings and best wishes,

Phillip Wilcher

Dear Phillip, I replied to you again on Youtube, but I will try and Explain on Hear, I did not know who you were at first Because you did not make an account on Wikipedia you just used an anonymous IP address Therefore I had no way of knowing who you were Because there are a lot of People misrepresenting Famous People on Wikipedia and as you can see from your page on hear People Put False Information all the time on Wikipedia However I do not, I try to revert the Vandalism on hear but I must have missed some stuff on your page I apologize , I will Leave your Page alone Thank you Jena (talk) 19:30, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Jena :

There is no need to apologise. You knew no better and I understand. I thank you for your reply and your word of faith here as you havewritten it. Suffice to say, the attack that I was accused of launching on the Wiggles in 2005 just weeks after my mother's passing when I was still grieving her loss and which generated much ill feeling towards me to almost see me hospitalised with a break down, was actually the calculated work of one journalist whose name I will not mention here, following the initial appearance of Christine Sam's article which I do not acknowledge. Both journalists, Christine Sams and the one whose name I will not mention promised me their interviews with me would reflect my interest in early childhood music and speak of my own work. What appeared was vastly different to what they lead me to believe they would write. Both journalists knew my mother had just died after a lifetime of debilitating illnesses and my sacrificing a considerable amount of my working life as a composer and musician to care for her. All references to this particular journalist's deplorable article that he wrote following on from Christine Sams's article, claiming I had launched an attack on The Wiggles, which was divided up and disseminated world wide (one article even gave my name as its author!) have since been removed from the internet. Sam's article regrettably has remained. Please be assured that I have never attacked The Wiggles. I would be foolish to do so. That being said, I do however feel Anthony has yet to pay me the courtesy Greg Page paid me in his autobiography "Now and Then". Greg and I have since been in contact with one another. It is my place to live with what has been and what will be and no one else's outside the more private world of The Wiggles to judge. The fact is that the majority of the debut album was written, arranged and financed by me at Anthony's request which gave to the Wiggles a contract with the ABC (for whom I once worked) to record a further two Cds thus contributing to the success story they have become today and thus enabling you to enjoy them as you do. That is a good thing. I am happy they have brought much pleasure into your life and the lives of others. I am personally very proud of that because I maintain a very keen sense in music for children and the education of children at a developmentally appropriate level. Please understand I am in no way upset with you, and again, there is no need for you to offer an apology. Consider this whenever you read a newspaper : much of the nuance and the spin that are placed on stories, for better or for worse, are the result of sub-editing. It was once publicly noted that I had apparently died in 1995 at the age of 37. Now, that's a bit spooky - yes?

As we move closer to the Christmas season, I would like to wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and a most prosperous New Year. Thank you Jena, I appreciate that you have taken the time to write me here.

Kind regards,

Phillip W. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.183.179.104 (talk) 21:36, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Phillip Wilcher

Dear Christine,

My name is Phillip Wilcher.

I understand there have been some concerns over additions and deletions to my entry here at Wikipedia. I must say, I myself have had some concerns over how I have been portrayed.

I have addressed a letter to you and Maproom at the "talk" section of my page here which I hope will clarify things for you a little. I have written you both respectfully in the spirit of consultation.

I would, if you feel it is appropriate, appreciate a more comprehensive entry on my work as a composer if you are able to attend to it. I am well established here in Australia and also known overseas. My music is broadcast, performed and studied frequently. Aside from accessing my own website for any biographical information or reviews of my works by other noted musicians in the

About the Music" section (Miriam Hyde who has an entry here at Wikipedia was my mentor) you might care simply to google me and access my biographical pages at the Australia Music Centre, Publications by Wirripang and even the National Library of Austrralia who keep an archive on me.

Further, if you feel any need to contact me directly through my website, you are most welcome to do so. I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have that would assist you if you are intending to rewrite and flesh out my page more factually.

I have noticed that Jena has made some comments in reference to me. I do not know Jena personally, nor does she know me. I wish her well but I would ask of her that she cease dismissing me as something less than I am that is based solely on any manipulations and misrepresentations of the media and the Australian Press. It is not the first time Jena has made such derogatory comments about me in public forums, and whilst I understand that she knows no better, I feel it is inappropriate and unfair and that it is time she stopped doing so. Again, I wish her well.

For your information, the only media articles that I personally acknowledge are :

1. A Life Less Wiggly (Steve Dow, Sydney Morning Herald)

2. The Fifth Man (Cheryl Critchley, Herald Sun - available at my website)

3. Becoming a Top Pre School Band Was No Child's Play for Wiggles (Nick Marc, The National, Abu Dhabi)

I do not altogether acknowldege the Christine Sams article for the "tailored" nuance she placed upon it that seemed geared more towards sensationalism and because I had stated to her that I was in no way whatsoever "bitter" about not being a Wiggle, yet she chose to use that word.I can only suggest she did not wish for truth to get in the way of what she felt was a better "story".

Please understand Christine that I ask nothing more than the entry about me at Wikipedia be factual and as comprehensive as you might see fit within Wiki's own guidlines. Many students here in Australia who are assigned my music to play for graded exams and diplomas through the Australian Examinations Board turn to Wikipedia as the first point of reference. Given Wikipedia prides itself on fact and honesty, it would be in their best interest, surely, that what is written about me is factual and an honest appraisal of my standing and my work. I often turn to Wikpedia myself when searching out information on topics as a point of reference to place my faith in.

I write you this letter with respect and very best wishes.

Yours sincerely, blessings,

Phillip Wilcher

Mr. Wilcher, I did see the note on your bio's talk page and was intending to respond when I got the chance. I understand all your concerns; it's my intention to address them, again when I have the chance. This, my talk page, is probably the best place to discuss this issue, since you're making a request of me to improve your bio. I'm committed to ensuring that all Wiggles-related articles on Wikipedia are of high quality. It's been my experience that a lot of the sources out there in the Aussie press about The Wiggles tend to be a bit on the sensational side, so I understand your concern that the information out there about you is accurate and balanced, and your problems with the Sams article. I was unaware of the sources you provide above, so I appreciate you bringing them to my attention. That has happened to me before in my editing career, with other articles; an interested party has contacted me about one of the articles I improve, provided me with sources, and requested that I use them in a specific article. And I have always complied with their requests.
However, Jena's point about your edits are well-made, if not very well-said. Your edits were reverted off-hand because they were made from an anonymous account. As Jena intimidated, we have to deal with vandalism to these articles regularly, so she assumed that your edits were malicious. It would help if you set up an account so that we can be sure that you're who you say you are, and then you can communicate with everyone involved in editing The Wiggles' articles. I also recommend that you not edit your own bio again, but request edits, to avoid conflict of interest issues, and because it's against Wikipedia policy for subjects to edit their own articles. We all want the same thing: accurate and reliable information being put out there. Understand, though, that we're all busy people, so I ask that you be patient. I assure you that I will work on your bio and hopefully bring up to the quality it deserves in the next week or so, and then other interested editors will chime in as well. I'm very open to feedback from others, so let me know what you think anywhere along the way. Thanks for bringing all this to our attention, and best wishes to you as well. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 19:53, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Christine:

Thank you. I appreciate the time you have taken to reply. I am grateful.

I did not realise it would have been best for me to set up an account. Similarly, I am really unaware of what Wikipedia's policies are. I would rather not directly edit my own bio, it feels kind of strange doing so, but I did not know what avenue exactly to follow. I thank you for your understanding. I also thank you in advance for your taking the time to write a little more comprehensively about me when you are able.

I have written a further response to Jena just to clarify things for her a little more, and I dare say they might help you when you come to consider things further.

Blessings and best wishes to you for the festive season : you have a love of figure skating, yes? - so do I!

Kindest regards,

Phillip — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.183.179.104 (talk) 21:45, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Christine :

I see you've fleshed out my entry. Thank you. It's better. I appreciate that you have done it. There are just a couple of things that are not quite correct if/when you have time..........

1. "Autumn Rain" was not recorded by me at 17 years of age . It was composed by me and published by J Albert & Sons Pty Ltd when I was 17 years of age. It was later broadcast by the ABC played by the pianist Arthur de Rozario and this year the pianist Jeanell Carrigan recorded it for Wirripang on the Cd titled "Wind Chimes".

2. "Archie's Theme" was not actually from any recording I had previously done but was a piece I had written at 14 years of age that was later recorded by me at the request of Anthony Field for the Wiggles debut album. It appears twice on the Wiggles eponymous debut album. The piece had originally been titled "Summer Dance" but renamed based on the nickname Anthony Field gave me (Archie) because of my association with the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts and Liberace's family and friends (see "The Performer" section of my website). I had been invited to play at celebrations honouring Liberace in the United States in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1994 where I stayed as a guest in his Palm Springs Villa (see "Tribute" section of my website : "A Sequin of Events"). "Archie's Theme" has since been recorded in its original form under its original title "Summer Dance" by the pianist Elpis Liossatos for the Tall Poppies Cd release titled "Lift Off : Piano Music for Children".

3. Neta Maughan and Elpis Liossatos are not really composers. Neta Maughan is a highly respected piano teacher and Elpis Liossatos was a concert pianist and graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music.

4. Just to clarify, I didn't write a letter of resignation leaving the Wiggles because I wanted to pursue a career in classical music (I already had a career in classical music anyway) or to devote more time to my composing. I wrote the letter on the advice of the Manager of the group back then whose name was Jeremy Fabinyi so as not to incur any further expenses for the recording of future albums although it was later verbally agreed I would stay behind the scenes as a writer. I think Steve Dow touches upon this in his article A Life Less Wiggly. If the entry on me is going to make mention of this, it should do so correctly, otherwise I wonder if it might not be best to leave mention of the letter out. As proof the letter which was written in September 1991 was later disregarded, Anthony Field asked me back to be in the film clip for Dorothy the Dinosaur which was filmed six months later in March of 1992 and later released on video by the ABC. I believe the ABC clip can be seen at Youtube. I'm not sure how you want to handle this, so I'll leave it with you to think about :)

5. Perhaps you could mention that I am an Elected Life Member of the Australasian Performing Rights Association and that my music is frequently broadcast by ABC-FM and other classical FM stations throughout Australia. You might find further information you can use when you have time at Wirripang's website and the website for the Australia Music Centre (who represent me) as both have bio pages for me :)

6. I worked for the ABC in the early 80s, not the 90s :)

Once more, I appreciate that you have taken the time to research me a little more. Thanks ever! :)

Every blessing and very best wishes,

Phillip W — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.218.111.132 (talk) 04:20, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Mr. Wilcher, thanks for the feedback. I've made a couple of changes based on it, mostly because my additions were matters of interpretation of the sources at hand. Please understand, though, that while feedback is appreciated in any form, it's not customary for the subjects of Wikipedia bios to direct the content of their articles. I can't just add information based upon your word here; I, like all Wikipedia editors, base the content of their edits to all articles in this encyclopedia on reliable, third-party sources, and not upon personal interviews, which Wikipedia interprets as original research and against policy. Wikipedia also resists using self-published sources such as personal webpages as sources unless there's no other reliable source available. I've made the editorial decision to use you webpage because there aren't any sources available about you, and because sometimes comprehensiveness is more important. To be honest, parts of your bio on your webpage are unclear, which is why I made some interpretations. The Steve Dow article, I feel, is clear about the circumstances of your letter of resignation to The Wiggles, and because the SMH is more reliable than your webpage, I had to go with what it said. I'll look at the two webpages you provided and see if there's anything worth adding. It's my intention to include a YouTube clip at the end of your bio as well. Again, thanks for the input. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:17, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Christine :

Thanks ever. I understand:)

As I suggested, yes, perhaps if you could visit the bios about me at Wirripang's website (www.australiancomposers.com.au) and the Australia Music Centre, it might be best as far as my work as a composer is concerned, to bring the page here into line with them, especially for students that study my work and who reference me first through Wikipedia.

Clive Robertson who you mention as one I have written music for is a high profiled radio presenter, journalist and reporter who used to read the evening news on ABC here in Australia. He broadcast much of music for ABC radio. It was through Mr. Robertson that my Ballade was recorded on an ABC Classics Cd by pianist Sally Whitwell. It might be appropriate to acknowledge/clarify his standing as a broadcaster and journalist rather than just list his name, out of courtesy - yes? - if you feel it is important.

Appreciation ever and again,

P:) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.174.145.88 (talk) 22:03, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Phillip, I added some information from the Wirripang website, but wasn't able to access your bio on the Australia Music Centre's site. Much of the information on Wirripang is already in your webpage, so there wasn't much to add. Again, I can only add what the sources have. Good luck to you and best wishes. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:50, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Christine :

Thanks ever. I feel it reads much better now and I appreciate a lot the efforts you have gone to for me.

Just one thing : in the first paragraph where you say I was the youngest published composer, you will need to change the age from 17 years to 14 years of age since I was only 14 when my first piece "Daybreak" was published.

Again, many thanks and blessings and best wishes to you always.

Phillip W — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.216.220.43 (talk) 03:12, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Christine:

I took the liberty of correcting my age to 14 (as mentioned above) in the first paragraphs and made several other fine tunings in places such as changing "recorded" to "published" in relation to early printed works etc. I trust this is ok with you and Wiki.

Thanks again for all you have done for me:)

Dear Christine:

I've replied at my talk page but not sure if that's the right place so I'll reply here as well :) I'm still finding/feeling my way around. I understand better the policy of editing one's own page. I was't sure it was so strict. I know better now. Thank you. I think you will find my webpage (the bio) states I played four times for the Liberace Foundation. Those four times were specifically in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1994. Perhaps it could be changed back to 4 times so as to tally. In other forums on the net over the years I have stated it was 4 times. I think too that perhaps the reference to APRA should clarify that it is the Australian Performing Rights Association.

Blessings and best. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phillip Wilcher (talkcontribs) 20:51, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

P — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phillip Wilcher (talkcontribs) 00:03, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Dear Christine:

I've realised where the discrepancy occurred about my playing for the Liberace celebrations. I played 4 times as is stated at the bio page of my website but I stayed 3 times in his home as is stated in the remembrance piece "A Sequin of Events". I think you've mixed the sources for this, which is understandable. Can my page here be changed back to reflect that I had played 4 times, those time being in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1994 for clarification please? It was after my first performance in 1989 that Liberace's family invited me to stay in his home on any subsequent visits.

I think too that the reference to APRA should clarify APRA in this instance as being the Australian Performing Rights Association.

Is it acceptable to suggest to you some quotes from Greg Page's autobiography "Now and Then" to be included here at some stage as well as perhaps other book references?

Season's blessings and ever,

Blue's Investigation

I will finish the PR if you can carry on waiting. I haven't had a lot of time to devote to WP recently, but I will plod away at it as time permits. (That said, unless there is a radical decline in quality in the second half, it is already superior to some articles that I've seen breeze through FAC recently). Yomanganitalk 11:28, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm not unopposed to waiting. I already have a pending FAC anyway, and I don't believe in having more than one review in any one place at a time, unless I do it by accident, which actually happened to me recently. Take your time; there's always stuff to do around here and IRL. Thanks. I do like the re-naming. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 14:16, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

DYK for On the Pulse of Morning

Graeme Bartlett (talk) 16:04, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Figureskatingfan, I've begun the copy-edit you requested to the above article at the GOCE Request page. Please feel free to contact me, or to correct or revert my edits if I'm doing something I shouldn't. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 07:17, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Done; I've removed lots of passages that I thought were WP:COATRACK, and made changes per WP:SAID (see my edit summaries). The article is still full of essay-like comments, such as "According to (author)", "(Author) says that ..." etc. The constant namedropping of academics makes it read like a college essay IMO. I didn't remove these because that goes beyond my remit as a copy-editor. I think I've done the best I can here. Please feel free to contact me about any issues arising from the copy-edit. Dispute resolution volunteer survey

Dispute Resolution – Volunteer Survey Invite

Hello Figureskatingfan. To follow up on the first survey in April, I am conducting a second survey to learn more about dispute resolution volunteers - their motivations for resolving disputes, the experiences they've had, and their ideas for the future. I would appreciate your thoughts. I hope that with the results of this survey, we will learn how to increase the amount of active, engaged volunteers, and further improve dispute resolution processes. The survey takes around five to ten minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. No personally identifiable information will be released.

Please click HERE to participate.

Many thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.

You are receiving this invitation because you have either listed yourself as a volunteer at a dispute resolution forum, or are a member of a dispute resolution committee. For more information, please see the page that describes my fellowship work which can be found here. Szhang (WMF) (talk) 02:46, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Kevin Clash, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Richard Hunt (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). WikiCup 2013 starting soon

Hi there; you're receiving this message because you have previously shown interest in the WikiCup. This is just to remind you that the 2013 WikiCup will be starting on 1 January, and that signups will remain open throughout January. Old and new Wikipedians and WikiCup participants are warmly invited to take part in this year's competition. (Though, as a note to the more experienced participants, there have been a few small rules changes in the last few months.) If you have already signed up, let this be a reminder; you will receive a message with your submissions' page soon. Please direct any questions to the WikiCup talk page. Thanks! J Milburn 19:41, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2013 WikiCup!

Hello Figureskatingfan, and welcome to the 2013 WikiCup! Your submissions' page is here. The competition begins at midnight UTC. The first round will last until the end of February, at which point the top 64 scorers will advance to the second round. We will be in touch at the end of every month, and signups are going to remain open until the end of January; if you know of anyone else who may like to take part, please let them know! A few reminders: *The rules can be found here. There have been a few changes from last year, which are listed on that page. *Anything you submit must have been nominated and promoted in 2013, and you need to have completed significant work upon it in 2013. (The articles you review at good article reviews does not need to have been nominated in 2013, but you do need to have started the review in 2013.) We will be checking. *If you feel that another competitor is breaking the rules or abusing the competition in some way, please let a judge know. Please do not remove entries from the submissions' pages of others yourself. *Don't worry about calculating precisely how many points everything is worth. The bot will do that. The bot may occasionally get something wrong- let a judge know, or post on the WikiCup talk page if that happens. *Please try to be prompt in updating submissions' pages so that they can be double-checked. Overall, however, don't worry, and have fun. It doesn't matter if you make the odd mistake; these things happen. Questions can be asked on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! FAC - heads up

Hi Christine! Not sure if you received approval ahead of time, but the rule at FAC (it's in the header at the top of the page) is that each nominator is only allowed one article at a time, unless one is a co-nom. For reference, FAC says "An editor is allowed to be the sole nominator of only one article at a time". ceranthor 21:14, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Oops, you're right; I didn't know about that. I will go fix now. Thanks. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:29, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Happy New Year!

[[

Best wishes for the New Year!
Wishing you and yours a joyous, healthful, and productive 2013!

Please accept a belated thank you for the well wishes upon my retirement as FAC delegate this year, and apologies for the false alarm of my first—and hopefully last—retirement; the well wishes extended me were most kind, but I decided to return, re-committed, when another blocked sock was revealed as one of the factors aggravating the FA pages this year.

Maintaining standards in featured content requires vigilance, dedication and knowledge of people like you, who are needed; reviews are always welcome at FAC, FAR and TFA requests. Somehow, somehow we never ever seem to do nothin' completely nice and easy, but here's hoping that 2013 will see a peaceful road ahead and a return to the quality and comaraderie that defines the FA process, with the help of many dedicated Wikipedians!

Hi Christine, there is a slight issue with your DYK nom. Please reply there. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:52, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Christine, you didn't include one of the approval icons with your review of this DYK nomination. If you meant to fully approve it, can you please return and add an icon? If there was something remaining that kept you from appending the icon, please let us know what it was, so it can be fixed. Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:16, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm really sorry, but I've had to remove your did you know article, as it was written last year. Anything nominated has to have been worked on during 2013. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me on my talk page. J Milburn (talk) 23:19, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

I have no doubt that you acted in good faith. We may be working in different timezones here, but the only changes I saw this year were these- certainly not "significant work". J Milburn (talk) 12:18, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Ouch, that's strict. Most of the work was done on New Year's Eve. Guess I should've waited longer; live and learn I guess. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:15, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Angelou

Hi Christine, sorry it took such a long time to review the Angelou piece. I didn't expect that to happen when I started but as you know RL sometimes intervenes. It struck me just now that it's the perfect piece to run for the inauguration but that's next Monday, so now I'm feeling doubly bad because it sat in the PR queue for such a long time and I took too long with the review. Please ping me when it gets to FAC, and don't hesitate to ping whenever you have anything else at FAC. I don't have FAC on watch so am clueless about what's going on there now. Truthkeeper (talk) 01:57, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi yourself. Look, I totally understand RL getting in the way; it so annoys me that it happens so much! Actually, it never occurred to me to get the article ready for the inauguration, but it's far from being ready anyway. I think that with your review, I could submit it now, but I already have an article at FAC. My real goal is to have an Angelou FT by her 85th birthday in April, something I'm not sure I can accomplish. I will submit her bio for TFA, though. Thanks for your always-valuable assistance and feedback. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:48, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Administration?

Hi Figureskatingfan. If you're up to an RfA, it'll be a pleasure to nominate you. I'll await your response. Kind regards. Wifione Message 18:03, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

No abso-freakin' way. Actually, I was considering it a few weeks back, but then SandyGeorgia was blocked and that was that. As I state here [1], I wouldn't voluntarily choose to be a part of any group that would do such a thing. And I certainly wouldn't want to put myself through another RkA, especially now with where I am personally. I'd much rather go about my merry way, working on my little insignificant articles and contributing to my little section of this project. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:46, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the reply. I understand your perspective. I'd request you to reconsider your stand at your convenience; as I honestly believe that administrative tools do help benchmark editors like you quite a lot while editing. In my opinion and in what I've seen over the years, the admin group is not a unipolar set of closely knit individuals; in fact, I might even mention that there is nothing that defines the administrative set as a 'group' at all. There are diverse philosophies that editors with administrative tools maintain, while working for the benefit of the project. The gaining of administrative tools does not stamp one with a no-return ticket to such a 'group'. Far from it, the gaining of administrative tools for sparkling editors like you would allow the project to be benefited considerably. The RfA is a request for the tools, rather than a request to be part of the administrative community. That's one reason I wrote to Sandy some days back requesting her to apply for an RfA. That's the same reason I am requesting you to reconsider your position. It's the project that goes into a lag when editors like you have to request others for administrative action. Again, if you reconsider your position to run for an RfA, please do write to me or send me a message. Thanks. Wifione Message 14:59, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Re: Angelou list

This is probably a stupid question, but did you mean archive1 or archive2? Both were made at about the same time, and the first one both has a comment and is at FLC. Wizardman 22:35, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

You're welcome!

I can understand why some people might have declined the block ... he hadn't edited since the morning (well, morning US Eastern time, for me). But I checked and he'd blown right through that last warning, so I didn't think there was an excuse. No problem. Daniel Case (talk) 07:04, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Sesame Street research2

I was just on my way over to check your replies and support when I saw it was archived! Bad luck on that one, and ping me when you renominate. On the Jamaican thing, there are two schools of thought on Patois/Patwah and whether or not it is a language in itself. But, to the best of my knowledge there are very few, if any, Jamaicans who don't speak fluent English as well as Patois. So perhaps "translation" is inaccurate (and potentially slightly insulting on the part of the author!). Maybe "cultural translation" would be better if the source would stretch to it, as I imagine that many scenarios may not have meant quite as much in Jamaica. Sarastro1 (talk) 11:31, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Yah, I just don't have enough time for Wikipedia. The first time its FAC failed because of lack of support. I think people are genuinely afraid of it, which just cracks me up. One reviewer said that he felt the article was complicated for many readers and that it was too technical. I'm very proud of the fact that an article about Sesame Street is actually over the heads of lots of folks, and that I was the one who did most of the writing and the research. This time, in its second FAC, it got support but late and I didn't have enough time at the end of last week to address all the feedback. I'll resubmit it in a couple of days and definitely ping you and others who have been involved. I usually don't do that, since it feels like gaming the system to me, but I think that in this case, it should be okay. And I'll go back and improve the Jamaica stuff; as an editor, I struggle with being true to the source but ensuring that the information is accurate. I think that in this case, it's a matter of interpretation (har-har), so I'll follow your suggestion. Thanks for the help! Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 20:48, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Influence of Sesame Street

The article Influence of Sesame Street you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Influence of Sesame Street for things which need to be addressed. FWIW, I'm also signed up for the WikiCup, though I'm not taking it terribly seriously. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 17:26, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, will do deal with feedback soon, probably today. Yah, I'm not taking it that seriously, either. Hey , as you can see above, I'm having trouble getting support for an article at FAC. Would you mind taking a look at it when I resubmit later this week? Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:10, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
I've answered your comments/changes and put the article on hold again. As for FAs, I've been staying away from that area myself. I figure that working with GAs for a while is probably a good idea before sticking my head into the FA reviewing world. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 17:54, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

In general, after an FAC is archived, the nom must wait two weeks before resubmitting. However, you could ask Graham Colm for an exception, he is quite reasonable and might allow you to re-nom early. Also, regarding the "canvassing" for support: while you can ping past reviewers, remember to be sure your wording is neutral, or this could be an issue with some (I learned this one the hard way). Cheers! GabeMc (talk|contribs) 21:58, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

I think you may need to transclude this onto the FAC page. I think it was pretty close last time, so I'll have a look in the next day or two. Sarastro1 (talk) 21:37, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Oh darn, I must have gotten distracted when I made the nom. Welcome to my world; that's why I shouldn't try to do 20 things at once. Thanks for the catch. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:59, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. Maya Angelou April 4

Hi Christine,

How do you feel about Maya's article running on the Main Page for her 85th birthday?--Chimino (talk) 17:06, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Chimino, brilliant idea! Yah I was gonna go nominate it in the next few days. Thanks for the reminder; I have some time, so I'll go do that now. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:20, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Excellent! I've always loved her books, and it would be great to see her represented. Take care --Chimino (talk) 23:18, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Miss Calypso, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Calypso and Variety (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Peer review?

Hello, I was wondering if you would be interested in peer reviewing Millennium Force. Peer Reviews seem to have stalled out and you PR Cedar Point last year and did a great job so I was wondering if you would be interested. Another editor has already started a review but his time on Wikipedia has been limited and suggested I should contact another peer reviewer. If not, I totally understand.-- Astros4477 (Talk) 23:57, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Sure, don't mind at all. Give me a few days, though; I have some stuff pending that I'd like to take care of first. And thanks for the kind words. I remember that article; it was fun to review. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 01:35, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you!-- Astros4477 (Talk) 01:41, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Maya Angelou awards FLC

Hey Figureskatingfan. I am writing to let you know that I have archived your nomination of List of awards and nominations received by Maya Angelou as unsuccessful. This does not mean that the list is not ready, but that consensus to promotion has not been reached after more than a month of open discussion. You are very welcomed to renominate the list in due time. Happy editing. — ΛΧΣ21 16:58, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

You can renominate it now, but I'd advice to wait some days to re-read the list, see if you left something that went unnoticed, and such. Also, when you nominate, try to locate possible reviewers and leave them a message on their talk pages. That works. I did it on my last FAC and it was promoted in 11 days with 5 supports :) — ΛΧΣ21 17:31, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

LW10

My apologies for failing to notice your GA review. I greatly appreciate the time your put into the review. I will work top resolve all the issues that you raised, and will re-nominate the article. I will notify you when this happens. Again, thanks for your review, and my sincerest apologies. Hawkeye7 (talk) 00:26, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

No problem; I was still able to submit it for the Wikicup. ;) Yes, definitely let me know when you're ready for another review; if you take care of everything, I'll be happy to pass it. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:27, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I have resolved all the issues, I think; there could still be some sourcing issues now that all the dead links are back to life again. I have re-nominated the article, along with LW4, which was overlooked. If you could give them a review, that would be much appreciated. Hawkeye7 (talk) 02:06, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now

Hi Christine, I started the review for Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now. I think this is ripe for promotion, but I do have a few suggestions for revision and minor expansion on the review page. Take a look and let me know your thoughts. And thanks for your work on this one! -- Khazar2 (talk) 15:26, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Millennium Force FAC

Hey! I plan on submitting it to FAC later tonight. I went through and double checked everything and it all looks good. Hopefully my first FAC goes well-- Astros4477 (Talk) 20:02, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Good luck! My first FAC (The Wiggles) was hellish; it took five times to pass! Part of the reason for that was my relative inexperience with writing articles and with the FAC process. You're way ahead of me; you know the process you should undertake before submitting an article to FAC, and you've gotten lots of help thus far. Just be willing to follow the reviewers' suggestions, and be open to their constructive criticism and feedback. Understand that they're there to help you, no matter how ridiculous and arbitrary they seem. Sometimes I feel like FAC is a series of hoops to jump through, and that some reviewers have you jump through them just for the heck of it. Also, if you feel strongly about something, stand up for it. I've learned that most reviewers will accept a well-reasoned and sound argument. Remember, you're the expert about this article, and most reviewers respect that. Since I've contributed to this article, I can't support it, but I can go over there and say that it's come a long way since I reviewed it for GAC, which it has. Be proud of yourself--you're going to be responsible for the very first roller coaster FA, something you can brag about for years to come. ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 20:19, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the comments! The article really has come a long way. This was my first edit on MF and as you can see, it is almost completely changed compared to what it is today. I've been reviewing and writing FLC lately so I do have a good understanding on the headaches they can give you sometimes! I have plenty of GAs but I've always been worried about roller coaster articles at FAC because of the lack of reliable references in most instances. Thanks for all the help; hopefully we will get to work together again!-- Astros4477 (Talk) 21:07, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Hey I have left a few comments on the review page!-- Astros4477 (Talk) 20:47, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Good Article Barnstar
For your work to promote several of Maya Angelou's works to Good Article status, most recently Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now. It's much appreciated--keep up the good work! -- Khazar2 (talk) 18:02, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Addition to my page.

Hi Christine,

How are you? I trust all is well.

I thought you should know there is another article by Steve Dow which appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald in which he mentions me and my involvement with the Wiggles along with the earlier interview of 2003. I feel it should be added as a reference to my page at wiki. Here's the link for you to consider it:

www.smh.com.au/entertainment/if-the-skivvy-fits-20130110-2chze.html

Should the link not open, simply google "If the skivvy fits" by Steve Dow. The article also appeared in The Age and other newspapers.

Also, there's still the correction to be made of the fact that I played 4 times for the Liberace Foundation. If you access the biography page of my website you will see where it says I was invited to play 4 times. I think in writing it up you might have referred to the "Tribute Pages" and confused it with the other fact that I was invited to stay 3 times in his Palm Springs home :)

Blessings and best wishes ever!

Four Award
Congratulations! You have been awarded the Four Award for your work from beginning to end on Sesame Street research. TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:16, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:16, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Wow, how cool is that. Thanks, Tony. I'm so relieved that it passed. I haven't had this much trouble getting an FA through FAC since my very first FA, The Wiggles, and that took five noms. It just couldn't get enough support. People were truly afraid of this article, and said that it was "too technical". Even though it was frustrating at times, it's kinda hilarious because it's about Sesame Street, for God's sake! I realized, though, that calling this article "technical" is a compliment; one of my goals is to have high-quality, academic-like articles about The Show, and I believe this fulfills that goal. So, in honor of the Four Award, Tony, Sesame Street, and musical adaptations with celebrities, here's my favorite song about the number four: [3] Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 15:36, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

I am not a basketball fan, but knowing nothing about a topic has never stopped me from reviewing an article before. I'll see what I can do. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:16, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Current Events Barnstar
For your contributions to save Kevin Clash's article from mediocrity during its controversy. It's not often we need a Sesame Street expert to wade into breaking news articles, but when we did, I'm glad you answered the call! -- Khazar2 (talk) 16:28, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, Khazar2! That's probably because fortunately, The Show doesn't usually garner this kind of controversy. I avoided the whole Mitt Romney/Big Bird thing. And thanks for the GA pass! Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 20:43, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Wow, I see now that I am far from the first to recognize you for your efforts. This makes me happy. You deserve the kudos! --Another Believer (Talk) 15:05, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello, always working closly with Astros4477, I have been following his FAC nomination of Millennium Force. Quoting the comment you made about the most reliable sources available, "I'd like to respond to this, if I may. I can't support or oppose this article because I reviewed it for GAC..." (don't want to copy and paste the entire thing as it is long), I have a question regarding an article (SheiKra) that I am working on for FAC (will nominate it as soon as it gets a copyedit). For the construction of the SheiKra, after a month of searching through newspapers for any construction reports, it appears that no newspapers every followed the construction of the roller coaster. However, there is one website that did, johnnyupsidedown.com. Would this website be accepted for a Featured Article?--Dom497 (talk) 15:02, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Dom, your link seems to be broken. Is the johnnyupsidedown site a fan or industry site? Taking a preliminary view at the ShiKra article, it looks like you, like Astros4477 did for the MF article, already include industry sites. The answer, without looking at the site about the coaster, is that if it's the best and only source you can find to support your claim, you should use it. If you make a good faith effort to find the best and most reliable sources, the reviewers at FAC should accept it. As I said in the MF FAC, I think that depending on the article, there are times that comprehensiveness trumps reliability. You just have to make a good case for it. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 16:20, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
I've fixed the link. I think its more on the fan side then industry but there is still a small mix of both. Either way, I don't plan on using every single thing mentioned about SheiKra but rather just the main (and more obvious) points.--Dom497 (talk) 13:01, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
