Next WP:USPP assessment
Hi Fetchcomms/Archive 13! Since Amy Roth's out on maternity leave, I'm pushing out the next round of assessments she needs. This time, we're comparing your assessment to readers' assessments. And instead of us assigning you articles, we're letting you pick! The full list of topics is on a subpage of the Assessment tab on our WikiProject. Please choose 10 of the articles to assess. Use the link in the section title to go to the appropriate version of the article.
Thanks for all your help! Please let me know if you have any questions! --Ldavis (Public Policy) (talk) 21:56, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
A Quick Look?
Hi Fetchcomms, I saw that you posted on my talk page welcoming me to the Public Policy Initiative for my Culture and Politics Course. I've put my article live and was wondering if you could give me feedback (on either my talk page or on the discussion page of the article). My article is on Weir High School (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Weir_High_School). Thanks in advance Wvhoya (talk) 23:40, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

I didn't see anything in the article about the big plans to update the site, so I summarized some points made in an article I happened to see online.
I'm curious as to why, if your change from "MySpace" to "Myspace" that I saw in the pink notice was the result of seeing another article, why didn't you add that information? Because I don't feel completely confident I did it right.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:45, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Your assistance please
You closed Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Ashley_Kirilow as delete on August 20th, 2010.
I started User:Geo Swan/Ashley Kirilow two days later, on August 22nd, 2010.
(Woah. I didn't mean to leave such a long note. If you don't think you have the patience to read the whole thing, could you skip to the last question?)
I can see the edit summary I used when I started it says "complicated". That was careless of me. I definitely should not have used an edit summary like that, without leaving an explanation in User talk:Geo Swan/Ashley Kirilow.
My recollection was that someone else started the article, and that it was a weak article at that point. I am pretty sure I added references and made other improvements to the article, while the article was under discussion. FWIW I don't think those expressing delete opinions appreciated:
- what a big story this was, in Canada;
- that the story received world-wide coverage, even in the non-English press;
- that because Kirilow had tried to organize as much public scrutiny as possible, when she was arranging fund-raising events on her own behalf, means that she should be considered a public person, not a private person, and so the protections we built into WP:BLP, to protect private persons do not apply to her;
- that Kirilow's case was then, and continues to be, mentioned in the context of how her fraud effected the fund-raising efforts of legitimate cancer sufferers.
I think the reason I put User:Geo Swan/Ashley Kirilow in user-space is that I was multi-tasking, that I was working on adding new references to the main-space version of Ashley Kirilow, and doing some other activities. I think when I was finally able to return to save my revisions to the main-space version, the system advised me that it had been deleted.
If that is what I did then I think that could be a problem, unless my drafts had already rewritten the article to the extent that none of the earlier contributor's intellectual contributions remained.
You can see I have returned to the user-space page to add more material. I have returned several times. Unfortunately I don't have time to do more work on the article in November.
So, I have a couple of questions for you:
- Am I correct that, as the closing administrator, if you thought that the concerns raised in the {{afd}} no longer applied, you have the authority to OK a main space article on Kirilow?
- Am I correct that, as the closing administrator, if you thought that a draft had been prepared that adequately addressed the concerns raised in the {{afd}}, you would have the authority to OK a main space article on Kirilow?
- If this is the case, would you have the time to give suggestions as to what you would require to feel satisfied that the concerns expressed in the {{afd}} had been adequately addressed?
- Do you think the revision history of User:Geo Swan/Ashley Kirilow showing that I am actively working on trying to prepare a draft that merits inclusion in article space, combined with the {{userspace notes}} tag on it, shows that I am not lapsing from WP:NOTWEBHOST? No one, but other wikipedia contributors, who are actually looking for material on Kirilow will find my notes.
- Similarly, do you think the revision history of User:Geo Swan/Ashley Kirilow showing that I am actively working on trying to prepare a draft that merits inclusion in article space, combined with the {{userspace notes}} tag on it, shows that I am not lapsing from WP:FAKEARTICLE? No one, but other wikipedia contributors, who are actually looking for material on Kirilow will find my notes. I was not really aware of WP:FAKEARTICLE until very recently. Now that I am aware of it I think it was drafted before we started to expect userspace drafts to be protected by __NOINDEX__.
- You may tell me that even though I have shown continuing work on the draft it is about to overstay its tenancy in user-space.
- If you don't think it has overstayed, how seriously do you think I should be concerned that the remaining intellectual content of the original contributors is not being acknowledged?
- Do you think that User:Geo Swan/Ashley Kirilow is sufficiently different that I don't need to be concerned over honoring the rights of the original contributors to have their content acknowledged?
- If an improved draft is approved for inclusion in article space do you think it would be sufficient to graft on the revision history, pre-deletion, at that time?
- I believe that administrators have the tools to graft the revision histories of two separate pages together. But I don't know how difficult that is, or whether most administrators know how to do this. If you yourself know how to do this, and you don't think my work in user-space is stale-dated, would you consider grafting on the pre-deletion revision history of Ashley Kirilow to User:Geo Swan/Ashley Kirilow?
Thanks for your time. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 17:41, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- OK, I'm going to try to answer these as best I can, although I think some of it is IAR-y:
- I think any admin could do that (or rather, you could move it into mainspace, and any admin could decline a {{db-repost}} on it if the content was not substantially similar to the deleted copy). A new AfD would then be needed if someone wanted to do that.
- Same as above.
- I think the main concern in the AfD was that the event was more notable than the actual person, so the article should be focused around the scam itself, not just Kirilow. If you shifted the article more toward the scam and titled it about the event, it would pass (IMO) BLP1E. Obviously, a lot of Kirilow info will still be present because, well, she was the scammer, but that's OK.
- Seems fine.
- Also fine. FAKEARTICLE is about drafts that lay around without being touched for around six months or more.
- Doesn't seem overstayed to me. The content seems different enough, and I can easily combine the page histories. If you want to move it to mainspace, though, I'd still suggest making the article more on the scam to avoid another BLP1E-based AfD from someone.
- If you want me to do graft the old revisions (I doubt it would hurt, though I don't think it's strictly necessary), just ask. Thanks, /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 02:03, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for your time. Your opinion that six months is rough yardstick for when WP:FAKEARTICLE seems relevant is of value to me because I have recently received some challenges over this. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 02:28, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Black Imperial aka "Young Jonii" again
Hi Fetch. Sorry to have to report that our old name-jumping bandspam friend BlackImperial is back, and has recreated the "Young Jonii" article (almost certainly about himself) in his userspace, here. Based on his signing up for a music distribution site that anyone can join for $10 per single, (his particular page on that site is here), he also added this redlink to insinuate himself into a list of artists signed to Island Records. (I've since deleted him from that list.) I think I remember that you deleted another "Young Jonii" page from his userspace once before, and here's a related warning you gave him, among the great many he's received across multiple accounts. Finally, based on this edit, on the IP's edit history, and the fact that it geolocates to Alabma where our friend appears to have just started college, it seems very likely that 207.157.121.33 is the same person, also. I don't intend to take this to ANI, I thought I'd just leave it to you to decide what you'd like to do since you're already familiar with the matter. Thanks, – OhioStandard (talk) 15:43, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Btw, I just noticed he has a userbox on his user page that says he's the owner of multiple accounts as allowed by policy. I don't know how long that userbox has been in place, but if he still has multiple accounts after all the mole-whacking so many people have done, I doubt he's likely to be using them in any way that's allowed by policy. – OhioStandard (talk) 15:53, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Design and Artists Copyright Society
Can you and User:Lectonar please revert your deletion of the Design and Artists Copyright Society entry?
The Design and Artists Copyright Society (http://www.dacs.org.uk/) is involved in lobbying the UK government through meetings with ministers, it should be recorded in wikipedia for us to have information on it. It met ministers from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills twice this year, one meeting was "to discuss Intellectual Property" - source UK government: http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/corporate/docs/foi/foi-bis-quarterly-publications-may-july-2010.doc
Whlb (talk) 16:11, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- Please address the issues of the page:
- The copy I deleted was a copyright violation. I cannot restore that unless the copyright holder gives permission for the text to be licensed under the CC-BY-SA, which is the copyright license Wikipedia uses. But even if such permission is given, the content is still too promotional/advertising-sounding to be appropriate.
- The copy Lectonar deleted was a one-sentence, unverifiable article that did not say why the society is notable. That is, why does it deserve to be on Wikipedia? Why is it famous enough to have an article? Etc. Usually, it would have to either win some major award(s), or it has to have been covered in multiple, independent publications (e.g., news articles, magazines, books, academic journals, etc.), to be notable.
- I suggest that you create a new draft article that includes references to these independent sources, and is not written in the tone of an advertisement, and submit the draft to Articles for creation. At this time, I am not willing to undelete the article because I don't see evidence of the issues being solved yet. Thank you, /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 03:06, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

DYK for Joseph Miranda
On 13 November 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Joseph Miranda, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that according to the FBI, purported mobster Joseph Miranda once owed his life to family boss Sam DeCavalcante? If you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Copyright problems: WikiProject United States Public Policy
Hi. :) It's been brought to my attention that one of the students involved in this project needs some guidance with respect to using non-free sources. In this series of edits, s/he copied content from [1]. I was about to leave him or her a note about how we work with sources, but I'm not really familiar with this program. Should you (or another ambassador) do it, or should I go ahead? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:05, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- Just wanted to let you know that based on this I've gone ahead and spoken to the user. Thanks. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:36, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for catching that and talking to the user—I wasn't aware of this until now. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 16:08, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Hey. I'm getting ready to post the geonotice. You should either make a section here or put up a notice at the top, explaining to people they ended up on your talk page when clicking for more info about applying to be a campus ambassador.--ragesoss (WMF) (talk) 18:12, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Union for the Mediterranean GA thank you
Hi, I have seen your message on my talk page. I would love to pursue a GA status. What exactly do I have to do? Thank you so muchBmw 1986 (talk) 22:40, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
- Leave new sections at the bottom of talk pages, always :) OK, this will take some time, and will require a bit of work (and you'll need to check back literally every day and work on it every day when the article is being reviewed before becoming a GA) but it seems doable. Before going for GA, though, I suggest asking for a peer review—an informal review process where any user can leave comments on how to improve the article. Please see Wikipedia:Peer review on how to start the peer review process; if you do not understand, I can start it for you.
- After people have left comments, you should address any issues they raise, fix everything they point out, etc. and then go to GAN (good article nominations), following the directions there on starting the GA process. Again, if you are not sure what to do here, just ask me. It will probably take a few weeks and you'll need to promptly address any concerns raised, so check back every day to see if someone has started the GA review.
- Hope this helps! /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 23:00, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
I've not a clue what happened there. I'm 98% sure the only manual edit was fixing the User:Hi878/Welcome template message that the bot had messed up. Apparently not. Mr. R00t Talk 01:15, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Third WP:USPP Assessment
Hi Fetchcomms/Archive 13! Thanks so much for your help on the Public Policy Initiative assessments. I really appreciate all your help -- we'll be in great shape when Amy gets back, thanks to all of your efforts! The next round of assessments is ready for you to review. Like the previous round, please pick 10 of the articles to review from the list, and it's especially critical that you use the version I've linked to for these.
This round measures the baseline quality of articles before our students started working on them. Many of these articles have undergone drastic revision already, so it may not be useful to leave comments about them on the talk pages. We'll be asking you to review the same set of articles once students have finished them too, so please be sure you're using the links provided so you're getting the versions immediately prior to when the students made their first edits. Ideally, these assessments should be completed by December 1.
I anticipate this taking a lot less time than previous rounds, as many of these articles are quite short. If you have extra time and want to help, please go back to round two and do a few more assessments -- especially on any articles that have only one or two assessments completed. I need a minimum of three assessments for each article, and some of the articles farther down the list still need attention.
Once again, thanks so much for your help and let me know if I can clarify anything at all! --Ldavis (Public Policy) (talk) 18:40, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Article Feedback Tool Help?
Hey Fetchcomms. I noticed you signed up for the Article Feedback Workgroup. I was wondering if you'd like to help us with Phase 2 of the feature. A goal for this phase is to better understand how these ratings reflect article quality. To do this, we're going to be applying the article feedback tool to page which we are fairly certain will undergo substantial revision in the near future (e.g., upcoming elections, movies, etc.). We can then evaluate the ratings before and after the substantial revisions and see if the revisions actually impact ratings.
Would you have time to help manage the articles that we're putting the feedback tool on? We're created a list of Additional Pages, but there are some other ideas that are floating around as well. It would be great if we could get some help coordinating these additional pages and then communicating with the English Wikipedia community. For more background, please check out this post and the Phase 2 design doc.
Let me know if you have time and we can chat more. Thanks! Howief (talk) 00:32, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- What is needed to manage the articles? I should be able to help, but would need to know what I am doing to be sure I have enough time. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 02:21, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Not much work is needed. I think all we need is for someone to a) help watch Additional Pages for additions & add any new pages to the article feedback category and b) post 1-2 updates on the enwiki Village Pump and wikien-l updating folks on what's going on. Let me know if you think you have time for this. Thanks! Howief (talk) 18:38, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- I can do everything except the wikien-l stuff; I don't subscribe to that list and I have way too many emails anyway, so I wouldn't be able to see any responses to any email I might send there. Is that OK? /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 23:29, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Works for me! Would you mind posting something on Village Pump sometime over the next few days then? We can manage the wikien-l announcement. Thanks for your help! Howief (talk) 23:43, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- I just posted a list of things to do on the workgroup page. Hopefully you'll still be able to help out! Howief (talk) 05:25, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Odd cat
Hi Fetch. User:Fetchcomms/script.js is listed in Category:Wikipedian usernames editors have expressed concern over. I think there is a transclusion of {{Uw-username}} by Twinkle which has brought over that cat with it. SilkTork *YES! 23:52, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

The Minor Athlete thing
Looking over the DRV where people were calling for an RfC, I note that the main question people wanted addressed at RfC seemed to be more a question of notability rather then BLP per-se. I don't think most of the people there intended us to avoid discussion on notability, since the question was indeed whether to keep or delete. Gigs (talk) 03:39, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- I agree, but the wording of the RfC seemed to be less about athletes and more about children BLPs in general. I think WP:ATHLETE should be amended, but I don't think it's necessarily something to combine amending with the BLP policy. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 03:59, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
hmm..
your going to block a user for not making mainspace edits? I really would question your reasoning for that. Inka888 06:46, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- Totally. CIR and MYSPACE. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 00:36, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, I noticed you gave that user a link to CIR. I agree that the user should make more mainspace edits, but I don't think their being disruptive by what their doing either. Also, the user is a volunteer so they don't have to do anything. That user is also very new so s/he is probably still getting to know the place. Inka888 01:19, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Being disruptive is grounds for blocking though... and lenience for such can only go so far (inotherwords, one can only AGF for so long before wondering if it's by intent). ROBERTMFROMLI | TK/CN 01:26, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

- I don't think you understood CIR. If a user is competent, they'll not have to be told to stop MySpacing multiple times. Also, Ian is not that new and we can't simply wait forever in the hopes that he will get to know the place someday in the future. And, just because we are all volunteers doesn't mean anything—if he doesn't want to do anything, he doesn't need to distract others and waste their time. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 01:34, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Question on old closed AfD
You closed an AfD discussion on the article Manifesto: Together Facing the New Totalitarianism back on September 7th. The result of the discussion was for the article to be merged to Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy. I ran across the Manifesto article today and spent some time improving it. Because of that, I think a reassessment needs to be made in terms of the merge result. I was wondering what my correct step in challenging it should be, since it seems far, far too late to take it to DRV and that wouldn't really fit anyways since the AfD discussion went fine and I just happened to improve the article after the fact. So, what's the best course of action here? SilverserenC 06:18, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
- Basically, if the improved article addresses the issues raised at the AfD, it doesn't need to be merged. What might be of more help is posting at the article's talk page and asking the commenters at the AfD, if you have not done so already, about their opinions now. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 21:35, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
- I will do that, thank you. SilverserenC 22:23, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Weird templates?
Hey, Fetch, would you kindly take a look at these templates: {{Tenterden}} and {{Rolvenden}}. An editor has been adding them to articles for the purpose of getting rid of the orphan tags on his articles, some of which I doubt are notable. See the discussion at the bottom of my Talk page. Do you think anything ought to be done? And, in any case, should the template be at the bottom of the Ellen Terry article? Any help or advice appreciated. I made an editing mistake today that exacerbated the issue, so I'd rather not remove any templates myself. All the best! Ssilvers (one of the Online Ambassadors).
- Ah, yes, I saw that ANI post ten minutes ago or so. I really don't think it's a big deal, unless one page has too many navboxes, in which case the less relevant ones can go, but I see no huge harm in connecting the articles to the locations as done so now. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 03:41, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

On 28 November 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) began offering Internet access to residents of Gilgit in 1999? Chaz Clemons
Fetch,
I'm causing quite a lot of difficulty with the Chaz Clemons article, which you closed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chaz Clemons. It's already been closed once, which I asked User:Jujutacular to re-open as it was closed as a keep when it was pretty clear to me that Clemons failed WP:ATHLETE. The late arrival of some other sources suggests he might pass WP:GNG, but the opportunity was lost as you had closed as delete before further discussion about the sources could be had. I would be grateful if you could re-open so we can have a debate about those sources posted on the day you closed. Thanks, Bigger digger (talk) 11:54, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- It's usually not a good idea to relist articles four times, and as Abductive pointed out, that's only local coverage. I checked out the Google News archives, and I only found the same thing: two or three hits of local coverage and the rest being reports of statistics/race results. I really don't think he passes GNG or ATHLETE from what was presented in the discussion, which is why I closed it as delete. If you want, you can use DRV. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 13:46, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think I'm hugely bothered, just that it might have been worth pursuing a discussion about those sources. As I pointed out in my nom I couldn't find many sources, so am happy to let sleeping dogs lie, or deleted articles stay deleted... Thanks, Bigger digger (talk) 14:10, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
A supposition
If an AFD had 8 particpants... and let's pretend that 4 !voted keep and 4 !voted delete. If one of those editors felt that some new comment or information might merit being discussed by the other 7, would you consider it canvassing for the one to send a carefully neutral note to go to the already involved 7 inviting them to revisit the discussion? Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:08, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- No. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 04:10, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- Same question... but now let's pre-suppose it was 5 articles bundled into one AFD... and we have 12 editors. Again we have the one trying to bring the other 11 into discussion with a neurally worded invitation. Canvassing? Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:15, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- Neutral, heh. Depends on the exact circumstance (if it was really just a last-ditch attempt and the new information was not significant in reality), but I probably wouldn't call it canvassing. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 04:19, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- And if the 5 bundled AFD had 66 particpants? There's our conundrum. One might reasonably pre-suppose that if the One only notified some but not all of the entire 65, then he might quite easily be seen as acting in violation of CANVAS. What can be seen to apply to a discussion of only a few, should still apply equally to a discussion involving many. A large number of folks involved in discussion simply mean that the number being notified will logically be larger than for the smaller discussions. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:46, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- I personally wouldn't bother notifying people then. But I think the issue at hand is continued concerns on possible canvassing; it's not often that an AfD in your theoretical situation happens with 66 participants, I think. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 16:40, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
