Welcome to the 2024 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2024 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close on 31 January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), and Frostly (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! Page mover granted

Hello, Dr vulpes. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Useful links:

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! Hey man im josh (talk) 15:47, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Thanks! I've thought about requesting this in the past but just never got around to it. Dr vulpes (Talk) 16:48, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Angelo863 on Kype (23:09, 7 January 2024)

In that piece is says attic char have no Kyle or it is barely visable, yet above that is a photo a a gut holding a very large Artic Char with a clearly visible Kyle. Very prominent. I'm new here and not sure how to go about things so whatever you think is fine with me as they said you were the mentor to ask. Thanks --Angelo863 (talk) 23:09, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Angelo863, glad to meet you! I think it's fine to leave it alone. In the article it says that "Among American species of charr, the kype reaches its maximum size in the large anadromous males" and then later it says "whereas it is reportedly absent or hardly visible in large nonanadromous males, Arctic char". So the image and text are both correct since the char in the image is returning from the sea (anadromous) to breed. Do you have any other question's about Wikipedia or any direction I can provide for you? Feel free to leave a message asking any questions on my talk page any time. Dr vulpes (Talk) 23:45, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from 1O1chain (11:29, 3 December 2023)

Hi My Mentor, I'll like to ask that how can i edit my page like the other big Rappers because I want mine to be exact --1O1chain (talk) 11:29, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Hey @1O1chain sorry for taking so long to get back to you. What kind of help did you need on making an article? What kind of rappers are you looking to edit? Come back and let me know I'll be more then happy to help you. Dr vulpes (Talk) 23:49, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Jpchihane (17:17, 7 January 2024)

How can I make my Wikipedia anonymous? --Jpchihane (talk) 17:17, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Jpchihane, you can make an article as just an IP editor if you don't want the article tied to your account. If you have more questions feel free to reply and let me know. Dr vulpes (Talk) 23:50, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Heatyeet (03:33, 12 December 2023)

Hello! I was assigned you as a mentor on Wikipedia, and I am interested in making election maps for various places in the world. How would I find a place that needs an election map done? Thanks! --Heatyeet (talk) 03:33, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Hey @Heatyeet, I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Are you still looking to make election maps? Dr vulpes (Talk) 23:47, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
No worries at all. I am indeed. Heatyeet (talk) 00:08, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
So @Heatyeet if I were you I would download something like Inkscape and fill in a map you find on commons or from an earlier election. If you want to make the parlament style graphics there is a tool for that which can me found here [1]https://parliamentdiagram.toolforge.org/ . Dr vulpes (Talk) 00:23, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I actually taught myself how to make legislative elections, I was just curious as to how I can find articles that need a map made. Heatyeet (talk) 00:31, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Ooo that's a good question I don't think that a lot of article are tagged or have a category. Maybe check out , for example I checked Australia and a lot of their early elections lack maps. Dr vulpes (Talk) 00:36, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

KSEE

Delighted to see you enjoyed reviewing it. I have a lot of similar pages at GAN you might be interested in and a titanic backlog of pages to nominate. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 02:06, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

I'll have to check them out later this week! I know you know this but your work is very good and wonderful to read, thank you for all your contributions. It's honestly refreshing to read something professional and in-depth. It makes me want to go back and improve my own work! Dr vulpes (Talk) 03:05, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Dr vulpes! As part of the January 2024 NPP Backlog drive re-review process, I wanted to let you know that you should not have marked List of states with cities larger than their capital city by population as reviewed because the topic is already covered by other existing lists and is not notable enough itself for a standalone list. No action is needed on your part, but feel free to let me know if you have any questions. ––FormalDude (talk) 02:40, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

NPP awards

Hi Dr vulpes. Thanks so much for the barnstar. Just a quick note that, like all talk message page templates, these should be substituted on use, i.e. {{subst:The New Page Patroller's Barnstar|type=iron|text=your message here ~~~~}}. – Joe (talk) 08:00, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up @Joe Roe, sorry for the (massive) mistake. It's my first year doing the awards coordination so I haven't really had to give out that many awards before. Won't happen again. Dr vulpes (Talk) 17:20, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
I have added {{subst only|auto=yes}} to the documentation for this barnstar, so AnomieBOT should fix all of these sometime soon without causing any new pings. SilverLocust 💬 08:58, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Clipperton Island case

On 5 February 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Clipperton Island case, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that it took the King of Italy 22 years to decide whether France or Mexico owned Clipperton Island? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Clipperton Island Case. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Clipperton Island case), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Kusma (talk) 00:03, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Hook update
Your hook reached 8,380 views (698.3 per hour), making it one of the most viewed hooks of February 2024 – nice work!

GalliumBot (talkcontribs) (he/it) 03:28, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

You edited your new article Clipperton Island case at 00:02, 7 Jan, adding text:
"Although the levels of exclusive authority are interrupted on a case by case basis with areas such as the Artic and Clipperton being uninhabitable having a much lower bar then territory with a native population."
Someone else has fixed a couple other bits here, but the strange use of the word 'interrupted' remains in the article. Did you perhaps mean to use the word 'interpreted', as in "interpreted on a case-by-case basis"? Shenme (talk) 03:52, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Question from Jkintree2 (21:17, 6 March 2024)

I created an account because I wanted to help edit Wikidata. My login at m.wikidata.org is blocked because my IP address is in a blocked range of addresses. When I reported being blocked to sessions@wikimedia.org, I was advised to create an account at https://accounts.wmflabs.org/. Following that advice succeeded for me to create the Wikipedia account, but I am still blocked from Wikidata. --Jkintree2 (talk) 21:17, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Jkintree2 (21:54, 6 March 2024)

Please disregard my previous message. I also reported still being blocked from logging in at m.wikidata.org to stewards@wikimedia.org, and the block has been removed. It's all good. --Jkintree2 (talk) 21:54, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello, Dr. Wolfy!

Thank you so much for the message on my talk page. I saw it right away but wanted to think of a pithy and pleasant response. I failed, so I am here now, hoping the remaining nine months are happy ones for you too.

You seem to have a lot of recent traffic on your talk page! I, too, would like to be able to use the email address stewards@wikimedia.org! Better yet, SupremeCommander@wikimedia.org similar to Douglas MacArthur!--FeralOink (talk) 18:09, 29 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Dr vulpes,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Reminders:

Question from "johnvanveen2020" (19:54, 7 May 2024)

Good day , My name is John van Veen and , I'm a semi professional photographer. I believe that,

I have invented a new artform that uses the cursor/mouse position to "dance" while selecting visual data.
My movements visually respond to the beat, melodies, and the lyrics of songs.

I have a bonafide permission to post my first creation from " the owners of the music " .for release on my youtube channel.

https://www.youtube.com/@johnvanveen1482

I would love to create an instant in time that documents that with Wikipedia. I have not done this before . I need to learn how to do it properly from someone ,who knows the ins and outs if the process.

check the link ,select the latest ,or any or, all to see it for yourself. It looks much better on a full screen much bigger than a phone. cheers, John --"johnvanveen2020" (talk) 19:54, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from FateOfNature (22:44, 17 August 2024)

Hey I just need a bit of help; I'm making a page about a public figure, this person is featured on quite a few news sites in their country, made a few books, and has founded a church (that surprisingly doesn't have a page either yet) , is that enough for a page? --FateOfNature (talk) 22:44, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

So you’ll need to check the notability guidelines for a person. What does this person do? Are they a politician or artist? A lot of different groups of people have different requirements for being notable. Dr vulpes (Talk) 23:12, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Why are you failing to respond?

You reverted a fix I made to an extremely messed up section in a community's article. Not only did you revert it, but you sent me a message that I had made the change without an edit summary. Clearly you failed to read the edit summary, then made the reversion, then failed to respond to my reply, then failed to fix the messed up portion of the article.

I am simply asking why you did this. 50.81.237.81 (talk) 23:03, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Please self-revert

I did fine routine work and added a perfectly normal author-link to a Wikipedia article. The link goes to the correct academic. It's pretty out there to call that vandalism and issue warnings (multiple!). Please self-revert and retract (delete) your warnings. 2A02:FE1:E185:A000:FD73:603A:2B2E:F4D1 (talk) 07:35, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Are you sure you have the correct person in mind? The Magne Malmanger you linked to is an art critic and you linked them to the second author (Svein Magnussen) on a psychology article.

"small"-tag fixes

Could you clarify what the edit-summary means for [2] and [3]? The edits do not seem to make any changes to any <small> tags and the articles do not appear to have any of that tag in any <ref> or or . DMacks (talk) 18:28, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Hey @DMacks yeah sorry that was my mistake, I was going over a list of pages that had that error and fat fingered a couple of them. I ended up not finishing all of them because I was too tired. Question from Caroline Ju (17:50, 3 September 2024)

Hello,

Can you help me publish a new page about an artist that I think ought to have one? I've edited it and it says it's been published but I'm not sure it has. And I'd like to add some more images. --Caroline Ju (talk) 17:51, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Caroline Ju sure I can help you. What page is it? Dr vulpes (Talk) 17:59, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
It was about a potter called Audrey Richardson but I don't think it has registered. Caroline Ju (talk) 18:09, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
Ok @Caroline Ju so I checked and didn't see an article for them on Wikipedia, first thing you should do is check and see if they're notable. If they're not notable there's a chance the article will be deleted. So review this page Wikipedia:Notability (people), if you think they're notable then start a draft of that article. This will let you take your time and work on the article. So you can find sources you need and make sure everything else is correct. You learn all about starting a draft article at this page Wikipedia:Drafts. If you have any questions or need a hand just leave me a message here. I live in California so it's my work time right now so if I don't respond quickly don't worry I'll be back online in about 5-6 hours. Dr vulpes (Talk) 18:15, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
Ok, thanks a lot: I suppose notability is to a certain extent in the mind of the observer! But I'll look at the rules and get back to you. Caroline Ju (talk) 19:25, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey there. I note you PRODed this one. Do you not think the fact he has appeared as a significant character in several notable shows for multiple episodes meets WP:NACTOR? I tend not to remove PRODs, especially from experienced editors. Just asking though, as I'd have marked this one as approved. — MaxnaCarta  ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:45, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey @MaxnaCarta so before I PRODed the article I did WP:BEFORE on Google, Newspapers.com and Archive.org and nothing was coming up. I checked sources in the article and they don't appear to be WP:INDEPENDENT. Also at the same time I'm not in Europe so it's possible that there's material in European newspapers that I don't have access to or Irish language materials. That's why I did a PROD and not an AfD, I put in some work and couldn't find anything that I would support WP:NACTOR. If you have some ideas of where to find material for the article let me know and I'll pull the PROD and add them. I really dislike removing articles when there could be sources that exist but I can't access due to language or geography or my own lack of knowledge. And because it's the internet I promise I'm being sincere and not sarcastic or anything mean like that. Dr vulpes (Talk) 04:50, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
Yeah fair enough! Honestly, I am checking my own thought process rather than yours. I tend to be more lenient and give the benefit of doubt to actors who have a good filmography, films that exist and were professionally made, etc. And then very stringent in applying the SNG/GNG for things like ANYBIO, PRODUCT, or NCORP etc — MaxnaCarta  ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:14, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

Roman Orus Article Draft

Hi Dr vulpes,

I'm working on a draft for Prof. Roman Orus (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Roman_Orus), a researcher cited in Tensor network, an article you edited.

The draft has been rejected due to lack of notability. Do you have any advice for the construction of the draft and getting the article approved?

Thanks,

CBathka (talk) 10:04, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi @CBathka, I would review the notability guidelines which can be found here WP:NPROF. In general I dislike it when an academic or author has a list of all their publications. If the person’s work is outside my own academic training it makes it harder for me to figure out if these publications are notable or fluff. It’s better to have a short article that highlights notable achievements of a person using good secondary sources than to just have a really big article.
Take a look at the notability guidelines and if you have more questions just leave me a message here and I’ll try to help if I can. Dr vulpes (Talk) 00:15, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks @Dr_vulpes, I incorporated your feedback after reviewing the notability guidelines. Prof Orus meets the first criterion for his work on quantum tensor networks, so I added that to the overview and academic career. I also removed the list of selected publications. Please take a look at the most recent version and let me know what you think. CBathka (Talk) 11:37, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Dr vulpes, I've made even more changes to the draft (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Roman_Orus) and was hoping you could give it a quick review. Thank you again! CBathka (talk) 01:59, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Conflict of interest?

Hey, you reverted me, and then apparently added some COI material here: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Adam_and_Eve_in_Mormonism&diff=prev&oldid=1247815379

That user was banned for adding himself to articles, why did you add it back? Why are you allowed to add content that breaks policy? Thomas C Sharp (talk) 04:53, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Thomas C Sharp, did you have a source for this? I see that the user was blocked but I can't see why. Dr vulpes (Talk) 05:01, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
There is a big ANI thread. The user who added this content is the author listed. A lot was cleaned up, it seems a lot wasn't. Thomas C Sharp (talk) 05:02, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
o cool yeah some of that older stuff is hard to find, would you mind linking me to it? Dr vulpes (Talk) 05:03, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
Are you trolling me? You don't know how to use the search feature? You also reverted the addition of Better source needed tags after primary sources. Why? Are primary sources appropriate? Thomas C Sharp (talk) 05:13, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
No I figured you had just read it so it would be easy for you to find. I'll go dig it up later when I have time. Dr vulpes (Talk) 05:16, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
Here it is, I ask that you stop adding conflict of interest material to Wikipedia. I'm not going to template you,but really, why would you add COI material and remove BSN tags from primary sources? Please read WP:RS [4] Thomas C Sharp (talk) 05:18, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi there - can you explain why you thought the consensus on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/IMOCA 60 Initiative Coeur 4 was "keep"? There were two participants, one !voting for keep and one the nominator. Not sure why it had to be closed by a non-admin in the first place. Thanks - Dclemens1971 (talk) 02:08, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

damn it I'm an idiot, I misread your last line and though that you were withdrawing the nomination. I'll message an admin to clean up my mistake. Sorry @Dclemens1971 no clue how that one got past me. Dr vulpes (Talk) 02:11, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
@Dclemens1971 fixed it, again super sorry. Dr vulpes (Talk) 02:13, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
No worries, I think you can just revert your changes on the three pages -- don't think any admin action is necessary. I still don't think the sources added provide sufficient sigcov or independence or else I would have withdrawn and closed already. Dclemens1971 (talk) 02:13, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
For sure, thanks for being cool about this and for pointing it out to me professionally. Dr vulpes (Talk) 02:16, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

Huh?

Hello, Dr vulpes,

Why did you create an article from the redirect AFD closure of Ginger Alden? It seems like odd timing given the discussion we are having in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anita Wood. I was just surprised to see the blue link given how heated the other AFD is. Liz Read! Talk! 07:19, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Liz, here's what happened. So when that AfD started to get a little heated I remembered seeing Ginger Alden mentioned in some of the sources I had added to the Anita Wood article. So I looked into Ginger Alden since there was a conversation about her not being notable. After a quick search on Archive.org one of the top results was a book she released a few months after the previous AfD closed. Since it had a few reviews and she qualified as a notable author I rewrote the article with some other sources and pushed it to main. Then when I went back to the AfD it had gotten really heated and I felt that if I had said anything about the new article at best it would make me look like a smug jerk and at worst it could look or feel like bullying. So I figured the best path forward was to wait until the AfD was finished, reach out to people who might be interested in article, and try to move forward in a productive manner. If I had checked the AfD before pushing the Ginger Alden article to main I would have kept it in draft until after the AfD. I'm sorry if this was against some rule or guideline, I meant no ill intent. I honestly was just trying to expand off the previous work I had done for the Anita Wood article and with a fairly clear WP:NAUTHOR I felt it wouldn't be that big of a deal or effort. If you would like I can rollback the article to the redirect until the AfD is finished or if there are any other actions/processes you feel that would be productive and fair I'm more then willing to do so. I'll defer to your judgment on this matter since you deal with this area a lot more than I do and the last thing I want is to cause problems for the community. Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates

Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
  • The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Request for Guidance on Page Revisions

Dear Dr Vulpes,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the remarkable work you do, especially given the volume of contributions you handle on Wikipedia. I greatly appreciate your expertise.

I understand my recent submission did not meet the necessary criteria, and I would really value your guidance on how I can revise it to align with Wikipedia's standards. I believe the subject meets the notability guidelines, but I'd love to know how I can improve the page for reconsideration.

Would you be open to sharing any specific areas that need attention? I would really appreciate your insights. The relevant page link is as follows: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Mark_Manduca_(investment_professional)

Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Kaleem CIOFSM (talk) 19:29, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi @CIOFSM, I went and edited out some of the unsourced material for example you listed his birthday but none of the sources had a birthday for him. And you listed his parents but none of the sources list them as being related so I removed that as well. When looking for sources try and find things like newpaper interviews where he's the main subject of the article. There are a lot of articles where he was on TV talking about COVID-19 which are fine but the other articles are just rehashes of the same press release. They're fine but that was really all I could find for him. See if you can find some more material and feel free to ping me here if you get stuck or when you submit your draft again and I'll review it for you. Dr vulpes (Talk) 23:09, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
Hello Dr Vulpes, I really appreciate the feedback. I went ahead and deleted any unnecessary citations. I found a newspaper article where he's the main subject (see {6} institutional investor). Please let me know if you can review it and give me any further feedback to be able to get the page approved for publishing. Thank you again for you time, please see link for draft. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Mark_Manduca_(investment_professional) CIOFSM (talk) 17:37, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
Hi Dr Vulpes, please let me know on the above when you have a moment. Additionally do you offer any consultation services outside of this talk page? CIOFSM (talk) 14:16, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Vrxces that's fine and thank you for reviewing it for me. I submitted it in part because the original author hasn't been on since I removed a large part of it and I wanted to get a second set of eyes on it. Just to make sure I wasn't being to harsh or rude. I feel a little awkward denying someone's article, going though it making big changes, and then just approving it. So thanks again it means a lot to me that you took the time and gave notes. Hello Dr.Vulpes:

hope you will be fine.

In the last seven days, you've reviewed 820 redirects. You seem to have a surfeit of barnstars already, so just take this personal thanks and cup of tea. Thank-you! Question from Artpine98 (07:51, 6 October 2024)

Hello, dr_vulpes,

Could you please help me with the article Interpipe Group?

My edits were fully reverted, but I believe not all of them were incorrect. Can you please help me solve this issue and improve my contributions? Thanks --Artpine98 (talk) 07:51, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Artpine98, it looks like the issue was a copyright violation. That kind of stuff is taken very seriously here, I'm sorry but I can't really help you here. I would try to recreate the content you added and make sure it's in your own words. Don't use ChatGPT because there are detectors for that now. If you need some help with this let me know your questions and I'll try my best to help you. Dr vulpes (Talk) 08:04, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Candidate instructions

Administrator Elections | Instructions for candidates

Thank you for choosing to run in the October 2024 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 15–21: SecurePoll setup phase
  • October 22–24: Discussion phase
  • October 25–31: SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–?: Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the SecurePoll setup phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend the SecurePoll setup phase from October 15–21 getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.

The discussion phase will take place from October 22–24. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as a request for adminship (RfA). Please make sure you are around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RfA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must have received at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation as a candidate, and best of luck.

You're receiving this message because you are a candidate in the October 2024 administrator elections.

I honestly don't know what to make of this IP user. Looking through their history, they showed up one day in April this year, had a few sporadic months, and they've been churning out these kinds of edits since September. I think they're doing their best to be constructive, but the quantity and speed at which they're churning these edits out is honestly quite disruptive and disturbing. Their contributions page says they've made almost 500 edits in the past 24 hours, and I am half jokingly starting to question if they're okay.

They blanked their talk page and reverted the edit that you pulled them up on, and I really don't know what to do here. Would it be worth it to take them to some kind of noticeboard for community discussion or something? Sirocco745 (talk) 06:01, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

Yeah it might be a good idea @Sirocco745, I don't want to be WP:BITEY and I want this to be a place where everyone's contributions can be valued. I think part of the problem is that WP:THEUNI can be a little hard to understand. Part of that is also that the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is part of the University of California San Diego. Dr vulpes (Talk) 06:05, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm on that side as well @Dr vulpes. I really think the best course of action would be to bring this to WP:ANI and get some community input on this, since it is a "chronic, intractable issue". The IP user has ignored warnings in the past and continues to ignore them, so I don't think that bringing them to ANI over chronic disregard for the Manual of Style when making en masse grammatical changes would be too much. Also sorry for the delayed response, was a tad bit busy. Sirocco745 (talk) 06:26, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

Your note:

You wrote: Hello, I'm Dr vulpes. An edit that you recently made to History of calendars seemed to be a test and has been reverted. If you want to practice editing, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! Dr vulpes (Talk) 05:46, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I reply:

No, it was not a test, it was a very helpful clarification. Without it, a reader would have to look up the page for Varro to see when his dating system was introduced. Saying it was "in the first century BC", is a necessary piece of information for a reader trying to understand how the systems evolved - if the date had been 4th century AD, for instance, it would suggest that a lot of dates using this system had been retroactively estimated, and thus be considerably more suspect. Conversely, if it were in the 3rd century BC, many corresponding dates might be regarded as more reliable than warranted. The object of Wikipedia is to be clear and helpful, but also rapid to use. 2001:56A:F0E9:9B00:D852:A2D3:C539:ACDA (talk) 06:15, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
Sorry I assumed that when you misspelled first that it was a test edit. Happy editing! Dr vulpes (Talk) 06:20, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

OK, cool. I probably would have caught the error after rechecking my edit, but it's not a certainty, so good that it was corrected. (I do a lot of edits, on the occasion that I drift through a topic I'm interested in, which mostly amount to fixing other people's typos, tidying up grammar, or adding links to other wiki pages that prior editors have neglected, usually because they are experts in a field and forget other readers aren't up to speed on their jargon and references.) When I make an edit that seems to need explaining, I'll "sign" it, though I don't have an account, as: 2001:56A:F0E9:9B00:D852:A2D3:C539:ACDA (talk) 06:44, 20 October 2024 (UTC)JustSomeWikiReader

Regarding Michael Stein article Notability

Hello @Dr vulpes, recently i encountered a page randomly i.e., Michael Stein and i find that you moved this page from draftspace to main. But is this article notable enough at this time to have an standalone page, because there is lack of independent sources which discuss the subject in depth to establish notability or neither he is vice chancellor or dean at any university nor he hasn’t received any prestigious international or national award. As of now i nominated it for deletion and Please let me know if i skipped something which makes him notable. Thanks. friendly mention @Fylindfotberserk. TheSlumPanda (talk) 16:48, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

Yeah that one is tricky since the author had a lot of info and material there for his academic work. But he does pass WP:NAUTHOR for his book. Dr vulpes (Talk) 22:23, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
Ok good but for general knowledge regarding notability guidelines how much books being reviewed by notable news websites is genrally required for notability TheSlumPanda (talk) 06:43, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
@TheSlumPanda, the rule of thumb I use for WP:NAUTHOR is two seperate good in-depth reviews. So for the Michael Stein article I counted the shorter review from a peer reviewed journal as one and the short review from the newspaper The Daily Oklahoman. I would have prefered that the two reviews had been a little longer and more in-depth but there were also some interviews with Texas Public Radio and other reviews for his other books so I figured that was enough for WP:NAUTHOR. What's really frustrating about that article is that I want to use WP:NPROF but when I was searching all I found was a lot of primary or self sourced material. Our Admin Election Test

Hello there. As we're preparing to move from one stage to the next, this is just a quick note from one member of the test group to another, wishing you well in the process of this new alternative to RfA. It seems that there are more of us in this group than some in the community anticipated, so i hope that doesn't make the experience any the worse for all of us. Whatever our individual results, i thank you, along with the rest, for stepping up and testing this process; happy days, ~ LindsayHello 07:17, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

Got any AfD advice?

Since others spoke pretty highly of your work over at AfD, I was wondering if you had any advice or tips about, I dunno, doing stuff in general over there? I've previously created 3 AfDs before

  • Ulpers was my first one and gave me the Wikipedia equivalent vibes of "this could've been an email instead of a meeting", and it didn't really give me much clarity on use of AfD as opposed to CSD.
  • The Florida Carry AfD was the one exception to my feeling of "I don't get why I have to do this." I felt this one deserved AfD because their article gave me an indication of importance but not significance, which I proceeded to investigate before going to AfD and presenting a bit of additional research.
  • The Cuisine of Jamaica AfD is what brought this up originally for me, since I wasn't entirely sure what to do there. It was definitely a facepalm moment.

It gets quite confusing at AfD; my timezone normally doesn't align with the majority of AfD closures because I'm Australian, so I never really get to see the result of many the day they're created. Not to mention there's more than a little bit of WP:ARGH! in those discussions, which doesn't help. Sirocco745 (talk) 06:29, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Sirocco745, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I've been super busy both on and off wiki! Honestly if you look at my first couple of votes at AfD I was pretty bad. What really got me focused in at AfD (and a MUCH better editor) was doing WP:NPRSCHOOL. @Atsme was my mentor and she really helped me learn everything, I hope she doesn't mind me saying this but she was one of the first people in the community that kicked my butt into gear. After I did NPP school and a NPP review drive I had a MUCH better handle on things. I still made mistakes but after awhile I got into a really nice groove. If you're enjoying your time on here look into NPP school and if you still enjoy it then try things out that you enjoy. I did a lot of work for WP:SHORTDES and WP:CHECKWIKI with WP:AWB and found that I enjoy being a WP:GNOME fixing small things and doing maintenance tasks. After that I started getting into content creation and have kind of found a nice place for myself here.
If you have any questions or want a bump in the right direction feel free to message me here or ping me. This time of year I'm pretty busy so if I don't get back to you just ping me again, you are not bothering or nagging me with multiple pings. Dr vulpes (Talk) 06:16, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
Accomplished, an honor to have worked with, and still one of my favs. Atsme 💬 📧 14:19, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
All good @Dr vulpes, being busy and the delays that come with it are just how life is!
NPRSCHOOL looks interesting, but all of the active trainers have timezones that just wouldn't work for me, which is quite annoying. My timezone is AEST (UTC+10), meaning "I'm eating lunch but you should be asleep" is a common experience online for me. It's not necessarily bad or a massive roadblock, I just don't like being the reason people are still awake past 9 pm as a general rule. I will keep it in mind though, especially since I'm almost done with my final exams. Only two more to go before precious freedom!
Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate it. Sirocco745 (talk) 06:52, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
Mine was all done asynchronously and on wiki, the time zone thing is more to let you know that it might take a little while to hear back. Dr vulpes (Talk) 16:27, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
Ah, gotcha. Was wondering how that would work out. I'll give it a try once I'm done with my exams, thanks for the suggestion! Sirocco745 (talk) 08:20, 26 October 2024 (UTC)

Reminder: GA backlog drive

Hello! Just a reminder that, if you have time, you are welcome to join the GA backlog drive; it runs until the end of October. You are receiving this message because you signed up on the drive page but have not yet listed any reviews. We hope to see you there! Either way, happy editing! —Ganesha811 (talk) 05:48, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

Okay, so I gather you had other things on your mind, @Dr vulpes. But there's still time left to get in a few reviews! (Thanks for running, and I hope to welcome you to the corps soon enough!) -- asilvering (talk) 17:17, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Willismwenda1 (05:26, 29 October 2024)

hello how are you how can i edit a topic in wikipedia --Willismwenda1 (talk) 05:26, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Willismwenda1 I left a note on your talk page. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions. Dr vulpes (Talk) 06:46, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Bias

You reverted my very correct edits because you are biased and not neutral. This is why Wikipedia has a world-wide reputation for bias and is banned as a source in all UK educational institutions (where I teach). 2A00:23C4:B64E:301:1D7B:1FD8:1E4C:9683 (talk) 08:27, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I'm afraid that your "very correct edits" weren't actually very correct to begin with. The Russian invasion and annexing of Crimea is well documented and internationally recognized as a forceful invasion by a foreign power. Then there's your talk page comment here. While it is technically correct, it's only on the technicality of territory ownership. People of a country owned by another nation can and do identify themselves by their birth nationality, not their country's owner. For example, even though Tasmania is territory of Australia, people from there call themselves Tasmanian because, well, that's where they were born.
Additionally, be very careful when accusing editors of bias, as personal attacks are a surefire way to speedrun getting blocked from Wikipedia. Sirocco745 (talk) 10:16, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to the drive!

Welcome, welcome, welcome Dr vulpes! I'm glad that you are joining the November 2024 drive! Please, have a cup of WikiTea, and go cite some articles.

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Question from DasomTM (10:37, 3 November 2024)

Hello I am trying to get started on making good well written posts with citations and inclusive links and all for a great article. what should i be learning now before my first post? --DasomTM (talk) 10:37, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Hey @DasomTM I'll post some links on your talk page. If I were you I would start by checking to see if there is an article on the topic already and if there isn't then I would start it as a WP:DRAFT. That'll give your article a place where you can work on it until you think it's ready. What's the topic of your article? If I'm familiar with it I can try and give you a hand if you like. Dr vulpes (Talk) 10:44, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
You do mentorships? Jealous I didn't get picked smh /j Sirocco745 (talk) 10:46, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

'Tis a good and noble job to do, supporting editors through their early days! Sirocco745 (talk) 10:53, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Good luck!

Hello there - I do not think we ever had the opportunity to interact directly, but I was really impressed by your knowledge and contributions, and I voted for you in the admin elections! Good luck to you, and let's hope for your victory in what I think are the first elections of this kind. 🧡 Brat Forelli🦊 12:08, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Thank you so much @Brat Forelli it really means a lot to me. I'm not sure if being asked so few questions during the election is a good sign or if there were just too many people running and I got skipped. Either way I had fun and got to learn a lot about some great editors! If you need anything feel free to reach out to me any time. Dr vulpes (Talk) 06:15, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Congratulations
