Community Maps

[edit]

Hi there. Quick question: do we really need two very similar maps in the infoboxes of towns? If community ones are better, shouldn't they replace the location marker ones? Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:07, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sirfurboy, the pinpoint map is generated automatically by the template so can’t really remove it. Plus the pinpoint does show some other features like roads the community ones don’t. Understand the duplication concerns, would’ve preferred a switcher between the marker and the community but the template doesn’t allow it. So module was the next best thing. DankJae 13:09, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really see the roads as a benefit. What is needed is a way to suppress the one in favour of the other. If I ever find the time (unlikely!), I'll look at the template. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 14:24, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sirfurboy, good luck. I couldn’t see a solution, myself. Not sure how to mix a location map template with a svg file. But having one file at a time would be nice.
The template is template-editor protected, and found the talk page to be slow at adopting anything when I raised a few tweaks. DankJae 14:28, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Although note, for very large rural communities, with a small village of the same name. The pinpoint map is more accurate to pinpoint the village rather than the community map. So both have merit imo. DankJae 14:29, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sirfurboy, would collapsing them help? Test at Abenbury. Willing to do Ceredigion again.
Any developments on adjusting the template? DankJae 19:01, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think that looks better. Good idea (as long as it doesn't break any MOS guidance). I am not currently planning on spending any time on the template, sorry. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 07:48, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly unusual interior decoration

but quite an attractive Grade II*. Might be enough for an article, [1]. All the best for 2025. KJP1 (talk) 14:53, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This is it, 11 Castle Street, [2]. KJP1 (talk) 14:59, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@KJP1, a high-heel bath???? Oh my. 😆 DankJae 15:30, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's quite something isn't it! I can't work out whether the thing on the right in the next bathroom is a sink or a urinal. KJP1 (talk) 15:34, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

River Aman

[edit]

You're right, of course; apologies. (My (partial) excuse is that the Welsh language article makes the same mistake.) Ehrenkater (talk) 16:53, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Too many Am(m)ans in Wales!
May be a River Aman (Cynon) be made or redirect somewhere.
Happy new year. DankJae 16:59, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, DankJae. I've added Aman River (Rhondda Cynon Taf) and I'd be grateful if you would review it.---Ehrenkater (talk) 19:55, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DankJae. Thank you for your work on Recommended place-names in Snowdonia. Another editor, Klbrain, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:

A sufficiently contentious and widely-discussed topic warranting discussion separately from Snowdonia.

Powys Community maps

[edit]

Hi Dankjae, not sure why you're removing the community maps for Powys and replacing them with pushpin maps. Most of the communities are quite large and a red pushpin doesn't begin to describe them. Sionk (talk) 00:25, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The community maps are still there, although for Powys they’re automatically collapsed at the bottom of the infobox due to the size.
The push pin map is automatically generated by the infobox when allocating coordinates, alongside other automatic additions. Just standardising the format to add all the community maps at the bottom of the infobox for all communities. Rather than two maps next to each other on some, no maps on others and for some a community map separate from the infobox.
Would prefer the template be tweaked so the community map can fit easily first (aside using image2 which makes two maps next to each other with coords) but did the best option based on how it currently works, merely repeated it. Discussed in a section above. DankJae 07:39, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sionk I could uncollapse some of Powys’ and hide the push pin? DankJae 07:45, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhh, I didn't realise this was something the infobox was doing automatically. Yes, it would make more sense to hide the pushpin maps in favour of the commumity ones in almost every case, if that's an option. Pushpins are great for towns and villages and the tiniest of communities. Sionk (talk) 17:54, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict), I see you removed the last comment, I already written a response so....
@Sionk, I'll attempt to show the community map first (aside using image2), for Powys articles only on communities. DankJae 18:26, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sionk,
So at Cadfarch I attempted two alternatives,
Any preference? DankJae 18:39, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for late reply, been away and busy with other things. While I can see some benefits of the pushpin maps, showing some topography and arterial routes, the community maps are far better as the default map in my opinion. With the example of Cadfarch, there's no village with that name, so the pushpin itself doesn't really tell us much (if it's shown at all, maybe it should be at the centre of the community). There are only half a dozen or so communities in Powys which are (relatively) small enough for a pushpin to be useful. But I've no objection to the pushpin map being left as an option for the reader, if they want to see a different level of geographical information. Thanks for considering the options. Sionk (talk) 11:15, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sionk, I'll assume that means no switcher? In the end the scenario is equivalent to having a pushpin at Wales, which would be odd. Fair enough. DankJae 03:15, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The European Destubathon

[edit]

You are invited to participate in The European Destubathon in April. Almost $3000 in Amazon voucher prizes, including a prize for Wales articles, which can be used to buy books for content, though it can also be treated as an editathon if you're not interested in competing! Minimum content to be added to each article just to ensure that they're over a stub, though longer expansions also welcome. Entries at the end of the contest will be tipped into the 50,000 Destubbing Challenge and European Challenge/20,000 Challenge for UK and Ireland entries. Previous contests were really enjoyable and I'm hoping this one will be too! Sign up if interested. Thanks! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:44, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
