Hi, welcome to the sixth volume of my talk page.

[edit]Re the Bronson house: "The property is owned by the NYS Department of Corrections and is located on the grounds of the Hudson Correctional Facility in the City of Hudson, Columbia County." though the same press release says it's been leased to Historic Hudson, Inc for 30 years
Most of the archeological digs have "address restricted" on their NHL applications and in some way, I'd like to honor that.
I had some errands to do upstate so tried to take advantage of it and take some pictures of the sites that still needed it. I've also finished out most of the NYC sites. As for the Boston Post Road, the buildings are not really near each other and it's somewhat hard to identify them definitively. This building (which is now a restaurant on a golf course) was relatively easy to identify and get to, so until someone takes a better picture...
finally, you are probably right about Opus 40. I've tried to stay away from the whole fair use issue, but in this case, seems appropriate. dm (talk) 15:51, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Dear Mr. Case:
I created the Cottekill, NY page in Wikipedia. I saw the photo you added of Rosendale Village and I would like to add a Cottekill Photo. I was wondering if you could tell me how to go about doing it. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! The Original Grunge (talk) 18:03, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Why did you block User:Bravogolfhotel? First of all, that's probably not the name of any sort of company, it's phonetic alphabet for "B G H". Second, it doesn't fit "promotional usernames" as defined in the username policy, because they were not promoting anything. I think you've made an erroneous block. rspeer / ɹəədsɹ 17:01, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Today the IP Address 75.31.247.103 made a minor post to World War II Casualties. You blocked the same user (with a different IP address)on 5 Dec as a suspected Sock Puppet. This user also made changes today to pages on Basketball. The post to WW2 Casualties was minor, I hope the user did not screw up our Basketball pages.--Woogie10w (talk) 03:23, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Quick! EMERGENCY! We need to 5 fold expand the article so it qualifies. I will help. I need your help, too! Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:15, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
The rule is that the article must be 1500 bytes AND less than 5 days old. Articles more than 5 days old qualify ONLY if they have been expanded 5 times the length in the past 5 days. As I said, I am willing to help. Time is short! Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:25, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
This article can be cleaned up. However, now is not the time. Clean up is slow and also reduces the article size potentially. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:31, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
DONE! It is 5x larger. It will need cleanup after DYK accepted. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 21:02, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Madswirl johnny
[edit]Hi there: I saw this name come up as my watchlist covers "User names for deletion" or whatever the section is called. I was curious as to the reason. Nothing Googles under that name that I can find; it isn't rude or offensive in any way I can identify; and, it is not over long or incomprehensible. Has your bot a mandate to delete anything with the word "mad" in it? Bielle (talk) 18:56, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you. I googled all three words, but inside quotation marks; if I had just done "Mad Swirl" I would have found out for myself. I appreciate your timely response. Bielle (talk) 19:12, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

The block of "Bravo Golf Hotel"
[edit]Hi, I see that rspeer has already contacted you about this block, but after hearing about this case I too must protest this block. The hotel you found upon googling does not seem to be widely known, on the other side the NATO phonetic alphabet is well known by many people in the entire world and anyone who has had any contact with radio communications would recognise this username as "BGH". Remember that the username policy states that having a company name as username is only problematic if the company is very well known, or if the user actually promotes the company. I therefore think that we should have assumed good faith and allowed this username.
Also, even if you disagree and believe that the username violates policy, I think notifying the user of this matter would have been a better course of action than blocking on sight. This user was making productive contributions and it would have been more welcoming to notify him of the username problem and direct him to WP:CHU. Experience shows that most newbies that are blocked for username violations stop editing even if they are later unblocked.
In addition, your block message did not specify what exactly was wrong with the username. In cases like this where most people wouldn't know what the violation is, using the optional parameter to {{UsernameBlocked}}
indicating the reason for blocking is very helpful. If, for example, you had written {{UsernameBlocked|your username matches the name of a hotel in Dumaguete City, Philippines}}
, this text would be incorporated into the block message instead of the standard template wich says "the username may be rude or inflammatory, be unnecessarily long or confusing, be too similar to an existing user, contain the name of an organization or website, refer to a Wikipedia or Wikimedia Foundation process or namespace, or be otherwise inappropriate", providing a more understandable explanation to the user. Is he back? (talk) 15:56, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for reviewing the block. I certainly agree that many usernames are unacceptable, but having been a radiotelegraphist in the Navy, I immediately recognised the use of the phonetic alphabet in this username. Personally, I think that the current culture at UAA is a bit too block-heavy, and that discussion should be attempted in more cases instead of outright blocking, so I'm glad you are willing to try that out. Is he back? (talk) 00:32, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
Your comments
[edit]Yes, you can be blocked for only three reverts. To describe your first edit as simply removing a template is, at this point, a bit disingenuous. The other user gave clear reasons for his reverts in his edit summaries which you could have heeded and attempted to discuss on the talk page, whatever others think of him. Instead you continued to revert. You may not necessarily have been blocked for a 3RR violation, but you certainly did disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point. — Daniel Case (talk) 07:31, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- What appears to be actually disingenuous is to pretend to be familiar with the nature of a dispute without researching it at all. The tag was never there. It was added recently by the same user who I and other people had problems with for the pushing the same POV after it was discussed a million times. Here he is adding it http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Talk:Egyptians&diff=176083129&oldid=176082965. What is also disingenuous is to say that I didn't add edit summaries when this is obviously not the case [1], [2]. Your assuming that I "disrupted" Wikipedia to make a "point" clearly shows that you let your personal biases to get in the way of your objectivity as an administrator by agreeing with the other user. The way I see it that makes you a bad administrator. Hamada2 (talk) 01:16, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Miranda Priestly.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Miranda Priestly.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 20:54, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your support, my request for adminship passed 62/0/0 yesterday!
I want to thank Snowolf and Dincher for nominating me, those who updated the RfA tally, and everyone for their support and many kind words. I will do my best to use the new tools carefully and responsibly (and since you are reading this, I haven't yet deleted your talk page by accident!). Please let me know if there is anything I can do to be of assistance, and keep an eye out for a little green fish with a mop on the road to an even better encyclopedia. Apologies regarding Gomez Mill article comment
[edit]I sincerely apologize if you took my criticism as an attack, and I completely understand how when there are only a few ways to say something it's easy to accidentally use identical wording. It was never my intention to call this deliberate; in fact I was simply trying to save us all trouble in case the Gomez foundation came on here and leveled such an accusation. Your remarks on the history page about obfuscating the paragraph so I don't think it's plagiarism appear pretty personally hostile to me, and I don't appreciate that - I was only trying to help. I personally don't care how you word it, and though you appear to think otherwise ("now this is the sort of constructive editing contribution I'd appreciate" regarding the comment following mine), I was indeed trying to make a constructive suggestion. My apologies for not duplicating the copied text on your personal talk page, but you seem to have known exactly to what I was referring. Again, also, I had no idea who had written the original article as this was not part of my concern. Please don't think that I would casually accuse anyone of plagiarism - I merely said that it could be construed as such, and that I construed it as such. I am by no means an authority, and I still stand by my statement. On the article's discussion page, I have clarified exactly what sentences caught my attention, though you've already somewhat corrected the matter. Dwringer (talk) 18:32, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your support. :) The nom was quite a ride! And a very close call, but I'm very happy that the third time turned out to be the charm. :) Now, especially since it was such a controversial nom, I'm going to take things very slowly. Plus of course it's the holiday season, so there are plenty of off-wiki distractions! I'm working my way through the exercises at the "admin school", and will phase very gradually into my use of tools. You are also absolutely correct, that I have strong incentive to not be a controversial admin. I think that everyone will find my adminship actually quite boring, after such an exciting nom. ;) Anyway, thanks again, and have good holidays, Elonka 10:30, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Query on block
[edit]Hello. I am a new admin and am curious as to your block of 116.14.112.226 (talk · contribs). When it was reported to AIV, I declined [4] to block because the IP's stopped editing at 11:47, one minute before they receive a "last warning" at 11:48. This of course excludes the blanking of their own talk page, but I did not count that as WP:USER states that editors may remove warnings at will. Thanks for your time, Kralizec! Hi. You removed the text of the fight song and alma mater from University at Albany, The State University of New York as a copyvio. Given that they are more than 75 years old, I believe that the copyright have expired, putting them into the public domain. I reverted those edits. If you disagree with this, please let me know and we can figure it out together. Thanks --Igoldste (talk) 12:46, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. For the Alma Mater, the June 17, 1916 entry at http://library.albany.edu/speccoll/chronology.htm from the UA archives, confirms its date. At the moment, I can't seem to find any date reference to the fight song. For what it is worth, I am under the impression that it is of a similar vintage. I'll revert the revert on it if I can't find something in the next few days.
- I am only a casual user and may not fully understand the guidelines. I read the two you pointed out and do not see them as being on point. Doesn't WP:NOT#INFO item 3 really talk about when an article consist solely of a song's lyrics? (and if so, then in cases such as Brown University Alma Mater, may need be merged into Brown University, which is what appears to have already occurred here.) WP:NPS seems to say that items should go into wikisource (which does not seem to have any other entries for college alma maters) if the source material is large, which is not the case here. What do you think?
- UA was founded as a school for teachers in 1844, so the question may be, why did it take 60 years for them to come up with an alma mater :)
- Thanks for the help and guidance. --Igoldste (talk) 02:32, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Adirondack "state" Park?
[edit]Daniel--while the official name is "Adirondack Park" New Yorkers call it Adirondack State Park. The reason I ask is that I've seen other state parks referenced in the news recently as being the biggest...I checked it out on wiki and noticed that 76.167.196.174 made several edits this fall that seemed to exploit the official name of Adirondack Park. I corrected 76.167.196.174 's changes reflecting my understanding that Adirondack Park is a NY State park. What say you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.108.77.121 (talk) 08:09, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Daniel --thanks for the prompt reply. You said--"Well, I'm a New Yorker, and I've always called it Adirondack Park. That's what the entry sign says along the Northway. That's what the state says in all its promotional material. That's what Adirondack Life magazine uses. That's what I get 146,000 ghits on, as opposed to 28,000 on for "Adirondack State Park". To call it the latter isn't just a misnomer but a misunderstanding. You were right to revert those edits. New York has plenty of other state parks; the difference with the two forest preserves is that they're much more like a national forest in that they contain much private land and permanent habitation within their boundaries. Wood-Tikchik State Park should rightly be referred to as the largest state park in the U.S., while the Adirondack Park is the largest state-level protected area. Daniel Case (talk) 10:43, 22 December 2007 (UTC)"
Despite it's official name, I would still agrue that it's a "State" park by definition: a park created and run by a State. It fits the wiki state park definition and is even mentioned as an example. As for private lands, I'm unsure about Wood-Tikchik, but regarding Anza-Borrego State Park (cited by some as the largest state park in the lower 48): "The primary mission of the Anza-Borrego Foundation (ABF) has been to acquire the private lands within and bordering Anza-Borrego Desert State Park®. When it was formed in the early 1930s, the park was checker boarded by thousands of acres of inholdings—one estimate as high as 60,000 acres—nearly 10% of the current park!" Is there a particular significance to "state-level protected area", because it certainly doesn't roll off the tongue or carry much resonance with a layman.
Daniel, again appreciate the prompt reply. Britannica online sees it as a State Park - "The area was sparsely settled when in 1892 the state legislature created Adirondack Park, which has grown over the years to become, at more than 5 million acres (2 million hectares), the largest U.S. state or national park outside of Alaska." Avoiding the obvious is leading to erroneous assertions about the relative size of other parks. I've returned to earlier verbiage in the intro sentence which labeled it a state park.
Daniel, I've (previously 68.108.77.121) started a thread on the article's talk page.Mirboj (talk) 20:14, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Your contributions to New York State Route 22's route description, has helped get the article to GA status. I thank you and WP:NYSR thanks you.Mitch32contribs 14:43, 22 December 2007 (UTC) |
- I've also been looking through the history of the page, and I second the above. Very good work indeed. Well done. Rt. 22:35, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Now that I think about it...
[edit]Wanna start working on major amounts of route descriptions for articles? We have about 342 stubs still that are in desperate need of help. While the major roads are using the AID thing, we can do the less major roads to help for GA status. (52, 55 being examples). Its up to you.Mitch32contribs 15:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ah ok, Just a suggestion, Route descriptions, specifically in NY, should be sourced with Google Maps in the route description. 52 would make a great GA, but the RD is completely unsourced. It can be done in two ways:
- Shorter roads - make a driving directions map of it.
- Longer roads - use the function in 20, 22 and 26.
This is just tips to help you out. Mitch32contribs 16:59, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
- These can usually keep sourcing in order. It also helps if they're in Template:Cite map format. Also, if you'd like, come to the #wikipedia-en-roads IRC channel. Its where everyone meets. Mitch32contribs 17:34, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Range-blocking IP addresses
[edit]Hi! I noticed the other day when not logged in that any IP address assigned to me was apparently an alleged sock puppet of one delightful Grant Chuggle. Fully understand the reasoning behind the block but I was wondering if you could just let me know about a couple of things.
- (1) Is it possible to create a separate account from behind a blocked IP address and if it is, then why wouldn't the person that you were targeting do that?
- (2) I know that the block is short, so I'm assuming that you did discuss the potential impact. Of course the impact is less if a person can create an account from blocked IP address - but that just brings us back to Q1 - but Telkom SA is the largest provider of ADSL services in South Africa, what with Telkom still effectively being a monopoly re: fixed lines. It operates a dynamic DNS system (I'm not techie enough to explain exactly how/why but I'm sure you already figured that out). I'm just wondering what the plan is with regard to your actions after the block ends if any untoward behaviour returns - I can't see that it's within the spirit of Wikipedia's collaborative society to cut out many of the internet users of a decent sized country...
I've had a long dredge through things to see if I can see where any of this was discussed but I can't find it, so if you just wanted to post a link to save time please do if you'd like to reply like that. And a Happy New Year to you when you get back! Kit Berg (talk) 23:22, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- Just an update: finally found the answer to Q1, should have read the blocking advice when not logged in more carefully! So it seems that it's not as bad as it could be but will probably deter many (most?[citation needed]) potential contributors. I don't think I'd have bothered with that whole jump-through-hoops if I'd have been met with that page when I first arrived at Wikipedia - of course that may be a good or bad thing, depending on one's view. - Sarah, I saw where you made the same request of Allison and have taken into consideration her response, particularly re the ArbCom ruling in question. I'm not going to block; I think the proper response is to protect both the page and talk page since not only the edit warring but the incivility seems to be getting out of control (and you're not blameless there: Calling someone innumerate and illiterate and then saying they can't tell time is neither being civil nor avoiding personal attacks). I think we need to start a discussion over at the reliable sources noticeboard about this issue in the meantime. Daniel Case (talk) 04:21, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- OK, got that and have backed off the article. As for the personal attacks; I assumed the IP was a troll - he was talking complete nonsense. I think maybe the civility standards should be relaxed a bit when dealing with....folk who annoy me. I think we should stick to avoiding, racism, ethnic hatred etc and libel and bad language. Otherwise if it's legal; it should be OK, I've seen so much gaming re incivility and allegations of same that I think we must give more weight to freedom of speech. Where could I propose that? RE: Your IRC Perspective
[edit]You know, it was only after re-reading your statement regarding IRC that I realised that you DO have a point there! Conversations on IRC are "real-time", and are seldom saved anywhere, as opposed to discussions on article and project talk pages, which are forever being archived and saved after a fashion. I don't think we need to worry about ArbCom picking up this RFAR, the four votes are there.
For my part, I view the IRC end as mostly an "off-duty lounge" type atmosphere, where editors and admins alike can "dress down", and exchange ideas in a casual environment. Consensus debates DO belong "in-Wiki", and the channel's topic displays that. As for the "user bashing", if I were being disruptive and continuously going against consensus, I would expect to receive my fair share of bashing as well...
I DO understand where you are coming from, even though I may not agree with some of your assertions. You stated that your belief was; "I believe our interactions and collaborations take place best in spaces where we are completely within Foundation ownership and Wikipedia policy." In contrast, I have gotten to know some of my fellow WP:USRD editors far better through IRC than would have ever been possible "in-Wiki". Collaborations, yes. I can see that side of the coin, and even agree somewhat. The thought processes, however, can sometimes be better revealed in a real-time environment. Edit Centric (talk) 10:52, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Grahamsville Historic District
[edit]Hi Daniel. Nice photo and short article on Grahamsville Historic District. However, I browsed the NRHP text document for the site, and it describes facts somewhat differently as 5 buildings on 20 acres, instead of 6 buildings on 200 acres. Would you take a look at that source? In the article, I provided a link to the NYS OPRHP search form that would bring up the NRHP text document, as well as photos and "other" (correspondence). By the way, how I am finding it to be most convenient to get documents from that system, is to print the documents to PDF files on my own computer, then read them. I use PDF995, a free pdf-writer available from, i think, software995.com. Happy new year and all that! :) doncram (talk) 02:48, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Actually the 20 acres are split across both sides of the road, the 3 houses on one side and the 3 public elements (church, cemetery, old store) on other side. Yes, I also recalled that the OPRHP site was hard to use in the past, but recently i tried it again and find it works fine. You have to enter Basic criteria such as name "Grahamsville" and county "Sullivan" in the search form, and then click over on the right at RESULTS to get the search to run. Not entirely intuitive. And i think it is then, yes, that a javascript icon shows up for a while, and then you get the 3 documents available (text, photos, other). Then clicking on one of them, you get a wide but short scrollable window showing about an inch the scanned document. I then choose to click on the printer icon and print to a PDF file, in order to read it. This has worked reliably for me for a number of documents. I happen to have been working on several NRHPs in List of Registered Historic Places in Onondaga County, New York recently. Now i remember, i had actually sent a request to the National Register to get one or two of them, but they sent me to the NYS OPRHP site. Let me know if I could possibly answer any questions about the OPRHP interface. Maybe you do need to let it update your Javascript. It is worthwhile, in terms of getting the NRHP docs conveniently and reliably. Cheers, doncram (talk) 03:56, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

In the morning, there are exciting plans for a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the American Museum of Natural History.
In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to discussing meta:Wikimedia New York City issues (see the last meeting's minutes).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

East End Historic District, and NYS OPRHP text linking
[edit]Hi Daniel -- Simply awesome job you've done, with East End Historic District (Newburgh, New York). Really stunning work! I'd like to think I helped, by nudging you back to trying the NYS OPRHP source again, thereby getting to the NRHP text document for this site, which might have allowed you to be more definitive in a lot that you say there. But you are the man, for having written and integrated all that, besides taking the beautiful pics and laying it all out so nicely!
But please tell, how do you discern the URL that will work to cite directly the document at NYS OPRHP?
cheers, doncram (talk) 07:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! Okay, so I went back and used it to hard-code the URL for the NRHP text in the Grahamsville Historic District. And added URL for its Accompanying 6 photos from 1979, too. To try to set a high standard. :) Check it out. I would add the URL for the Accompanying photos to the East End Historic District NRHP, too, but it's too hard for me to describe the photos for it, there are too many pics in its two part photo set for me to count and state what years the pics are from, like I usually do. It would add to the definitiveness of the East End article if you did it, though. :) doncram (talk) 08:35, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, yes, and I guess I oughta go back through all the NYS NHLs outside your area, and check which ones were lacking NRHP text and/or NRHP photos. It was a fairly large percentage that is lacking one or both, as the NPS system is rather imperfect in its coverage. Further, for at least some sites, tne OPRHP system has both a NRHP Registration or Inventory/Nomination text document AND a NHL Nomination text document. The Nationl Park Service NPS focus system just makes one available, probably usually the NHL nom, while I observe in one case now that the older NRHP text for a NYS site is a lot longer, probably has lots more info. Both should be linked to an NHL article, I suppose. Argh. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Doncram (talk • contribs) 21:57, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
The Reader re: Borowski
[edit]Thanks for the back up; I wasn't going to continue it further, but it's good to have a reminder every now and then that things can get out of hand when you're so keen on being right. :) It's a common misconception, though, so I think with the proper info they'll see the light. Thanks again! María (habla conmigo) 21:37, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I haven't "seen the light", and don't accept that believing that non-jews are not Holocaust victims is a "common misconception". There were many other groups that were victimized by the Nazis; the Holocaust was the organized, mass killing of Jews by the Nazis and it follows for me that non-Jews were not Holocaust victims. This viewpoint is held by many scolars and is also reflected in many popular resources about the Holocaust (e.g., the US Holocaust Memorial Museum).
I made one revert and get called out. I'm fairly new to this, but Jeeze. 165.189.169.190 (talk) 16:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I am well aware that groups other than jewish people were victims of the Nazis. That's the distinction I'm raising about Borowski.
How about something like this "..reading books by Holocaust survivors, such as Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi, and other survivors of Nazi persecution such as Tadeusz Borowski, who was also a noted writer of Holocaust literature..."
Does "The Reader" specifically identify Borowski as a "Holocaust survivor"? Can you point me to where?
Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.189.169.190 (talk) 19:09, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

uw-username
[edit]The parameter to {{uw-username}} is not optional, so even if you think the reason is obvious, you should always fill in a brief explanation of what the problem with a user's name is. —Random832 16:22, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
{{subst:uw-username|this is a test}}
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: this is a test. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?
I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.
You have several options freely available to you:
- If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
- If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Wikipedia administrators usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
- You can keep your contributions history under a new username. Visit Wikipedia:Changing username and follow the guidelines there.
Thank you.
Seems to work now. Did your reasons contain an = sign? you need to do "1=reason" in that case. Maybe the template's changed since you used it in the past.—Random832 16:34, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Vote for a post-meetup restaurant
[edit]I'm charged with making the reservations for us, so let's make it official. We'll do this via voting and everyone including anonymous voters, sockpuppets, and canvassed supporters is enfranchised. Voting irregularities and election fraud are encouraged as that would be really amusing in this instance. Please vote for whichever restaurant you would like to eat at given the information provided above and your own personal prejudices at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC#Let's make it official. The prevailing restaurant will be called first for the reservation. If a reservation cannot be obtained at the winning restaurant, the runner-up restaurant will be called thus making this entire process pointless. Voting ends 24 hours after this timestamp (because I said so). ScienceApologist (talk) 17:19, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Dutchess County Court House, photos
[edit]Awesome pic, and text, for Dutchess County Court House. Nice work again....
I think your new writing, using the NRHP text source, comes across as more definitive. I "believed" your other articles, but having a source at the end of the paragraph does come across better, IMO. I wonder though, when you are adding the text reference, why not also add the photos reference? Like i added for the Grahamsville one. It would be relatively easy for you at that moment to add it. I wonder if you think it does not add so much for the reader? p.s. I didn't separately check if there are photos available for this site, but i note you haven't added photo ref for other recent articles at least. doncram (talk) 08:26, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, Daniel, I have a question regarding deletion of the history of one's user page. I have some things that remain in my user page's history that I would like removed (personal information, etc), but I don't want the entire page deleted. [edit]Could we eliminate half the problem by blocking edits from new editors or anonymous IP addresses to the List of Days of our Lives cast members? He's back and just going nuts and it seems to be a frequent target of anonymous IP addresses. I think restricting it to established users would cut 90% of my wikiheadaches. Thanks so much. IrishLass (talk) 14:05, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- I semi-protected it for a month.
Grant's really causing more problems than I thought. The continued sockpuppetry is leading me to strongly consider asking to have him considered banned by the community, not just indefblocked.Daniel Case (talk) 14:34, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure you guys by now just think I'm on a personal crusade, but I think the semi-protection might be the best of a bunch of not-quite-ideal solutions, inconvenient as it is. I'd strongly advise against banning the entire Telkom SA range from Wikipedia, as I'm sure you'd guess. Have been racking my brains the last few days trying to figure out why but of course that's the great unanswerable, just headache material. I have to honestly say I'm supremely tired of the fact that the pointless obsession of one person to be right/wrong/'famous' causes this much hassle for this many people and I'm sure the DOOL people agree. Kit Berg (talk) 18:16, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- Pain in the tush is back again. He thinks it's about him being right. I say it's about him not being here at all and have reverted his edits again. In the states you can get people's service carriers to block them for vandalism, not sure how it works over there. Personally I favor the idea of everyone having to have a user name. It's the anonymous users that are generally the ones causing problems. By that I mean the ones intent on causing problems generally don't log on. Kit I don't know the solution, I just know Grant is a pain. BTW ~ thanks for protecting the cast list. It's amazing how quiet it's been there since you took care of that for me/we DOOL contributors. IrishLass (talk) 18:21, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Actually, you can't always get carriers even here in the US to cut people off unless they flagrantly violate their TOS, such as by posting libelous material. There's one long-term vandal who's led to some Southwestern Bell customers in the Houston area having to have accounts to edit since they've been unresponsive to our efforts to get them to cut him off.
Where is he at it now? I'll see if I can just protect the page. If not, another soft rangeblock is in order (so Mr. Berg will be able to edit, and Grant knows that unlike the IPs we can and will permanently block any accounts he creates). Daniel Case (talk) 18:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
- He's in the Brady Black and Chloe Lane pages. I'm just tired of dealing with him day in and day out. I really want to go to the message board he hangs out at and give him what for. How can one person cause so much grief? Thanks again for all the help. I really wish he'd take the hint and just go away. IrishLass (talk) 19:00, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Help please
[edit]I have a simple question. How the heck can someone see if I have a page on my watchlist? I automatically watch any page I edit but now I'm being accused of using the watchlist to spy on a page so I can destroy it. Can you explain how it is possible for someone to see my talk page? IrishLass (talk) 14:15, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- You mean your watchlist, right :-)? First, it shouldn't be anyone's business why you have a page on your watchlist; second, I don't know how it's possible for other people to know what's on your watchlist, unless you've mentioned at some point in the past that it is (People do say things like that and forget they did). There used to be a thing saying "X people are watching this page" but they got rid of it ages ago, I guess because they decided it encouraged vandals to seek out unwatched pages. Daniel Case (talk) 14:58, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks. No, I didn't tell anyone it was on my watchlist. I thought maybe admins could see or something. It's just odd how it came about. Thanks for the info. IrishLass (talk) 15:04, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Assistance
[edit]I know you are busy but I moved part of a conversation from an article talk page to my talk page because a new user is claiming to be an admin. I need your help in figuring this out and what should be done. I find the behaviour to be suspect and the claims of why they are not an admin suspicious. Can you help. Thanks IrishLass (talk) 14:45, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
- When your looking into this issue, can you please look into the issue regarding the infobox on the Las Vegas (TV series) discussion page. The discussion is going nowhere but downhill. As KellyANa and Irishlass have been very difficult even with me giving several possible solutions. Even though the user CarGm5 is in question, he/she makes sereval good points. - Sorry Daniel, apparently I have a stalker. IrishLass (talk) 15:01, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
It seems to me like MangoJuice has already addressed this issue. Daniel Case (talk) 15:24, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Daniel, not sure how the wiki-law works in these things but it seems to me that Philip Shearer (Admin) removed your protection and immediately engaged in edit-warring (including the mass removal of references). Could you please look into it? Regards Sarah777 (talk) 18:43, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Philip actually wanted the article deleted, as did I, but the attempt failed the AfD. My own view is indeed that there are wider issues at stake than whether one particular "massacre" (Fallujah) should or shouldn't be included. It is that we must have a consistent approach to verification across all potential candidates for inclusion. And if we do that then we end up with an extremely vast list or a tiny list. Philip is trying to take each inclusion separately and deal on its "merits"; which means that entries which draw opposition from many editors (such as suggestions of US perpetrated "massacres") must have a higher level of proof (going beyond normal wiki-standards). But massacres conducted by Shite militias need less proof as very few on en:wiki are likely to be too concerned about the feelings of the remote and unknown alleged bombers. And for legal as well as cultural and political reasons the English-speaking media are way more likely to describe a bombing by Islamist fundamentalists as a massacre than they would a bombing by the US air-force. This is so obvious I don't really think it can be credibly disputed. So any variable standard of verification will inevitably lead to an extremely biased list; and the more recent the time period the more biased the list. The root cause of this problem is the attempt to maintain a list with a title "massacre". I have even suggested something like "List of events considered massacres by the Western Media"; that would obviously put the inherent and unavoidable POV up-front and would eliminate any possibility of using the article for propaganda purposes. Which some quarters seem to regard as the problem with my suggestions. Sarah777 (talk) 05:45, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Short answer YES the Fallujah entry should go to an request for comment (on the article).
- Long answer. Articles such as these can not stay protected indefinitely (WP:PROTECT), and as I assumed that you would be watching a page that you had protected no explicit notice was necessary. After a more than two weeks discussion on the talk page, I though bar a couple of minor edits that the new version was a reasonable compromise (as Sarah777 had not responded to my long explanation on undue weight and NPOV). Also removing to the talk page for further discussion those entries that had been flagged as contentious seemed to me to be a way of reducing conflict on the article. Clearly as Sarah777 is in no mood to compromise (as she restored the version prior to the discussion on the talk page) to overwrite the compromise version and is not willing to have no version on the article page while we discuss it further, I do not think that protecting the page with the older version of Fallujah on it will lead to a compromise, because Sarah777 seems by her actions over the last 24 hours to have no interest in working towards a compromise which are her repeated reversal to a version she likes and accusing me of bad faith edits: "engaged in edit-warring (including the mass removal of references)". So yes the Fallujah entry should go to an request for comment (on the article). --Philip Baird Shearer (talk) 11:06, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Philip, every comment you make makes it clearer and clearer that your POV makes you totally unsuitable to have any Administrative part in this article and I call on you to relinquish you Admin role. I have repeatedly answered your endless stream of attacks on every reference as you move the goalposts with every new one that I post. You still don't realise that the problem here is not Fallujah; it is the total lack of a clear, unambiguous standard of verification that is applied totally equally to all alleged massacres. The fact that you suggest that Fallujah alone, rather than the entire "article", needs a RfC indicates that you have no real grasp of the issues at stake. Which are the primacy of WP:NPOV in the article as a whole, not just in some individual sections. Sarah777 (talk) 13:02, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Record banners.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Record banners.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]I noticed the page was blanked, and so I went to the talk page of the person who did this... (Ranger Roi) whom you already blocked, so I came here since I'm not certain of how to properly revert the page back and also make sure this guy (who apparantly vandalized a bunch of other pages) gets credit for his destruction.

[edit]Hey dude, I wonder if you lend some of your excellent energy. The NYS NHLs are all teed up now, with NRHP text/photo links, and quite the majority now with new photos or HABS photos. I have uploaded HABS pics for all where HABS available and no new pic available. New people i have encouraged have added new pics, but not writing. It would be really great if u could march through the List of National Historic Landmarks in New York, spiffing up the articles' writing and the corresponding descriptions. This is what i think is necessary to bring the list to FL status (both the articles plus the list itself need to be improved). You are doing/have done such great writing on so many NRHP articles, you make it look easy, but i know it is not (at least for me, i donut haff de wurdz 2 doo it). doncram (talk) 06:22, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Something broken in DYK template?
[edit]I can't fathom the details of the template syntax. The line "Archive – Start a new article..." has begun displaying outside the {{Did you know}} template on pages where it is transcluded, as for example on my talk page: outside the template and above the hooks instead of below the hooks and inside it.
I'm asking you because it wasn't doing that before about an hour ago and the most recent edits to the template were yours. — Athaenara ✉ 03:50, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

- I was just thinking that the block could be an extended block of unregistered users. Not necessarily indefinite but just for a few weeks or so, to stem the tide in popularity of editing at the particular school. As the trend diminishes, the kids probably wont keep checking it and just assume it was indefinite. Reply to Town of Newburgh Material
[edit]You cannot begin to imagine how thrilled I was to have gotten your response last week! Your comments were very very nice and very very welcome and I greatly appreciated them. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of time since trying to figure out exactly how mechanically to respond to you. I hope what I am doing now proves to be the correct way to do it! I had seen your name many times on the discussion pages and have come to greatly admire your work and your expertise. Unfortunatelly, as I said, every time I tried to join in the discussion it didn't seem to work. Actually, I had tried several times in past months to "log in" as a user of Wikipedia. Apparently, I was doing something wrong because this is the first time that it seems to have actually worked! Well, actually I won't know THIS worked until or unless I get a response from you! As far as your corrections and suggestions go: a. Last week I got a visit from a delightful lady, Mrs. Starin, who with her husband used to own and live in Gomez House. She came in to complain that we are not doing enough to publicize the history of the Town of Newburgh. I printed out the Wikipedia article thinking that would impress her. Instead of impressing her, she went totally ballistic because Gomez Home wasn't even metioned! I figured I better put it on pronto! So what you saw I did very rapidly and of course I agree with your suggested edits. b. I had seen the article on Route 747 a long time ago and it completely knocked my socks off. Then I saw all the changes made little by little as time went by and kept getting more and more impressed. There was a sentence in their that the "only" homes and businesses on the old Drury Lane were on the part which is now a cul de sac. I would have totally and completely ignored that sentence were it not for the fact that one of my best friends lives in one of the houses which is now on the new 747. She complained to me all through the construction, which must have been horribly inconvenient for her and her family. She complained that she had to change her address through the post office and with all her correspondents from Drury Lane to Route 747 even though she didn't move. NOw she is complaining because her front lawn used to be flush with the road and now you have to go down a fairly steep incline to get to her house. Frankly, if I hadn't been listening to her detailing these developments all these months I would have left it alone! By the way, she is the one who pointed out to me that there IS a westbound ramp onto 84. I don't understand for the life of me why the state changed its mind on that but agree with your asssessment that best leave it alone. I frankly did not want to take the responsibility of totally eradicating what you had previously written which is why I worded it the way I did. c. You are completely one hundred percent correct that I had hit a button at the top totally by accident and was hysterically trying to undo it and couldn't figure out how! I hope you got this message and want you to know that I cannot thank you enough for taking the time and trouble --- and simply caring --- enough to respond to me and to offer me help. My time is very limited but I am going to do the best I possiblly can. By the way, your name didn't ring a bell when I first saw it but now that you called it to my attention I remember seeing your by line in the Mid Hudson Times about 10 years ago. At that time, I was Congressman Ben Gilman's press secretary and part of my job was reading all the weeklies from throughout Orange and surrounding counties and reporting to him on what was going on. I am going to try to sign out now. Hope I got it right. Nghtownclerk (talk) 20:44, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
More on Town of Newburgh Material
[edit]I apologize for not knowing the proper protocol in posting replies on your talk page, but it took me a while to figure out electronically how to do it. I read your article on Powelton Club and it truly knocked my socks off. I learned a great deal from it. You obviously can't use the following because it is in the realm of "Newburgh urban legend" but I thought you would be interested: prior to the late 1920's, Route 9W was what is now Balmville Road, on the east side of the Powelton Club. When they built the new stretch of highway west of the Powelton Club which you referred to, prohibition was at its height. WHen I was a kid, I was told by various old timers that numerous boot leggers and gangsters are buried under the pavement of this new stretch of Route 9W! Fascinating, no? I have been very very busy at work lately, so haven't had any time to get into any serious editing, but plan to do so when I have some free time. In the meantime, keep up the good work! Nghtownclerk (talk) 14:01, 28 January 2008 (UTC) Thre is something else I really wanted you to know: I also got a real kick out of your article on New York State Route 207. Your comments about this route within the City of Newburgh were right on. I vividly remember that when you approached the intersection of Wisner Avenue eastbound there was a prominent shield with a directional arrow indicating that 207 turned onto Wisner. That sign and arrow disappeared at least 25 years ago (probably kids) and NYS DOT apparently doesn't think it is worth the expenditure to replace it! Likewise, if you are going westbound on 17K you encouter a 207 shield with the "JCT" banner but there is no further information after that. The directional arrows indicating exactly where access to 207 is are long gone. Now, many years ago when they widened Route 32 wihtin the City of Newburgh, there was a temporary detour. That Route 32 sign at the intersection of 17K and Wisner Ave. which you mention is a reminant of that temporary detour! It should have been removed years ago but apparently the powers that be either overlooked it or think it is not worth removing.Nghtownclerk (talk) 14:20, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Screamers plot length
[edit]I would like to request that you provide me with a link to the policy article that specifically states a plot description can be no longer than one thousand words. I haven't come across this before. Gamer Junkie T / C 05:04, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- That's a guideline, not a policy. It's not even an old guideline, and was probably added by some Deletionist as a legitimate means to their end. Looks like more of the overly binding, bureaucratic instruction creep which appears to infest every corner of Wikipedia's administration these days. Gamer Junkie T / C 05:31, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that I did request a discussion regarding the plot's length upon initially removing the tag. I still believe that's appropriate, as throwing around quasi-official, semi-valid guidelines and exclaiming "end of discussion!" doesn't particularly go down well. Not that I'm saying you've done this. As far as good faith goes... lol. The only reason I still contribute here at all is out of obligation to my fellow WikiProject founders. There's a lot of good editors here. There's also a lot of editors who spend more time removing information than contributing it. I have a problem with this. Image copyright problem with Image:Black Rock Forest logo.png
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:Black Rock Forest logo.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 00:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Judith_Guest.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Judith_Guest.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 20:39, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

The Office Project
[edit]Hi! It's great to hear from someone else in the project. As I was going through delivering the newsletters, it was a bit disheartening to see that over half of the members of the project are either on an extended WikiBreak, or haven't contributed for months. Those pictures look great, and I think would greatly help the project. Well, seeing that you were one of the few who seem still active in the project, I have no doubt that I'll be talking with you soon. Have a great day! -Mastrchf91- 20:09, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Riverby
[edit]Hi Daniel -- Thanks for your recent addition of the NYSOPRHP reference to the Riverby article. I wonder, you weren't able to get a single pic of the Riverby estate complex, if not of the study that is the NHL per se, when you were in the area to do Slabsides? A pic for the Riverby article, even if just in the vicinity, would help. I am also not clear if the estate runs down to the Hudson River, or if it does not, so the article doesn't say. Cheers, doncram (talk) 22:15, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks too for catching the missed extra blank line on my DYK update Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:15, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Daniel, in general I am OK with infoboxes, but Awadewit is very opposed to them, and in this case I think the article is better as is (without one). The comment at the top of the article when editing it is "Please discuss adding an infobox to this page before doing so; we have tried it before but haven't found a good way yet - Thanks!".
- There really wasn't room to include the box and two maps and all the images, and we preferred to get rid of the box rather than a map or other image (or two). I tried a different box ({{Geobox Protected Area}}) first (as it can include two maps), but that still took too much space. I then made several different versions of one map to try and combine the two maps, but all of the combined maps had more opposition than support on the talk page (for the combo maps see here on Commons and for a different approach seethis).
- After we omitted the box, I made sure that all the information that was in the two different infoboxes we tried was in the article The box omission was raised on the article's talk page at the time (now archived), without any opposition. It did not come up in the official peer review, or on the later, unofficial "peer review" we solicited (on the current talk page). We specifically mentioned the infobox omission in the FAC nomination, but none of the subsequent FAC comments mentioned it. The only compromise I can think of is to try and make some sort of collapsible box that would be one line unless opened, but I am not sure this would work either. I will also ask for Awadewit's feedback here. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:59, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- P.S. Thanks for your help updating DYK the other day.
- Since the infobox would just replicate information that is already succinctly presented in the lead (the "salient facts" you mention), I don't feel that it would add anything. Moreover, since we would have to remove a map and possibly some images to add the infobox, I believe it would only detract from the page. I would hate to remove either of the maps, which provide useful information not otherwise in the article, or the images which Ruhrfisch himself traveled to Northumberland to take and which illustrate key parts of the article. I think that these concerns outweigh any benefits to be gained from the infobox. Awadewit | talk 04:27, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
- I tried making a collapsed infobox - all that shows are two lines: "Joseph Priestley House / National Historic Landmark" wikilinked to National Historic Landmark. It is just barely wider than the 300 px photos (has to be this wide to display properly). The only parameter it is missing are the coordinates, which are shown just above it anyway. What do you think of it? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:32, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- I am going to copy the relevant parts of this conversation from your, Awadewit's and my talk pages to the Priestley House talk page. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:00, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
(unindent)Thanks very much (and not half-hearted thanks either) for the Half Barnstar - I am honored to share it with Awadewit for our work on Joseph Priestley House. Thanks again, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:18, 7 February 2008 (UTC) PS Have you had a chance to look at the the collapsible infobox on the article?

User Jayjg
[edit]Hello. I have edited the "Posen speech" page and "Heinrich Himmler" page with IMT documents and cited the source: Arthur R. Butz book. User Jayjg has deleted my edit twice saying: "remove material from unreliable source - what Butz says is irrelevant"... Well, I think Butz is a source, and discussion must follow, but I think it´s very inapropriate to delete this information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.6.238.83 (talk) 18:15, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
- I just saw this - just in case you didn't know, Arthur Butz is a well known Holocaust denier (and decorum prevents me from using other adjectives to describe him). I hardly think his books qualify as reliable sources, except perhaps to illustrate the lunacy that is Holocaust denial. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:23, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Daniel; thanks for the substantial note. Of the three criterion I listed, the most serious (IMHO) is the tone and diction. I came across the article by accident, and found a lot of good information. On the whole I think it's a good article (not to be confused with Good Article), it just needs to take a more formal tone. I actually would have simply asked for a GA review, but since I noticed other editors' concerns regarding the tone spanning over the past several years I felt it prudent to delist at this time. As far as source = (1/time) I have several similar circumstances with some of my pet articles. Regarding the images, I've had GA noms fail because of excessive Fair Use images; however I see your point regarding historical events. That in-and-of itself does not require delisting as far as I know (and shouldn't keep it from being relisted in the future, I don't think). I will try to find some time to work on the diction, but I wouldn't expect it to happen overnight. :-) Thanks again! /Blaxthos ( t / c ) 06:30, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
IP range block of Grant Chuggle
[edit]How exactly does that work? If someone from that area wants to edit they have to register? Is that it? I suspect he's back but can't completely prove it, just want to know if that is possible. IrishLass (talk) 19:56, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you. So there's a possibility that Grant could have registered with another purposeful deceptive name, i.e. the name of a different soap that he claims to love but never edits, just to edit Days again. Is that how I understand it? Oh, by the way, I've been accused of being a sock or a puppet, not sure which I am the puppet or the puppeteer [18] by someone who keeps reverting Las Vegas. I guess I just roll with it and do what I can while I'm still allowed to be here if they decide to agree with the report. Thanks for all the help with Grant. Hi Daniel
[edit]No problem, Just in case my note sounded like a lecture, I must apologize, I didn't realize it was a oversight. There is tendency on the part of certain editiors of a political bent to try to ignore or trivialize the existence of indian christians. But I do realize most people (in the US) are not really familiar with the indian subgroup keralites. It was actually very cool that you single out the minnu, as that is a very distinctive feature of south indian weddings, not many people pick up on that. I got to commend you on the article also, its very professionally done. Good job and keep up the great work on wiki.--Kathanar (talk) 22:34, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Highlands Churches
[edit]I recently saw your article on St. Philip's in the Highlands. Do you think it might be worth trying to make a stub for St. John's in the Wilderness? It's not an NHRP, but there is, of course, the interesting Palm Sunday tradition, which is documented in secondary sources, like Myles' book. Alas, the Highlands are now far from me, but I'd be willing to work on a stub if you think it might be worth keeping. Choess (talk) 01:58, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- I started something in my userspace: User:Choess/St.-John's. I'll work on it slowly. I can source to the Myles book; do you have access to older editions of the New York Walk Book (1920s, 1950s)? From the snippets on Google Books, there might be some info on the Palm Sunday hikes in there. Choess (talk) 00:53, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Username block on User:Prampton
[edit]Hi Daniel, I'd like to ask you about the username block on User:Prampton if I may. The user is an editor interested in the Phyllis Rampton Trust which is the reason for his/her username. I'm pretty sure that they are not affiliated with the Trust, if that is your concern. Prampton has been making some very good edits today to a variety of British railway related articles, and I welcome them on that basis. We need as many serious editors in this area as possible. I am not convinced that the user's name is rude or inflammatory. Could you perhaps let me know the specific issue you see with the username. I'd hate to loose a very productive new editors if it can be avoided. I'm more than willing to help this user if a username change is required. Thanks, Gwernol 19:31, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Daniel, many thanks for the quick reply. Could I make a case here that User:Prampton is not in fact connected to the Trust, nor is the material he added promotional? The article Phyllis Rampton Trust is well written, neutral coverage of the subject, and while some of the sources are not great, others are fine. Within the rather arcane world of British narrow gauge railways, the trust has a somewhat unfortunate reputation as a very secretive organization that does not interact well with other organizations or individuals. Prampton's article gives a good factual account of what is know of the Trust and, in my opinion, is neither strongly pro- or anti- the Trust, which is what we would require. Someone from the Trust would, I am confident, have written a very different article. Couple that with the user's constructive and unbiased contributions to other articles and I'm confident that this is not someone who threatens the encyclopedia. Could you see your way to unblocking the user for now? I will work with User:Prampton to see if we effect a name change, but I am worried that a block notice will put them off from making further contributions. Many thanks, Gwernol 19:48, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, greatly appreciated Daniel. I will work with Prampton to effect a username change. Best, Gwernol 20:01, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

DYK Israel stamps
[edit]Greetings! thanks for working the DYK page. If you don't mind, please add a DYK note to my Talk, since I contributed most of the content of the new Postage stamps and postal history of Israel. Thanks, be well, HG | Talk 11:31, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for your note about the other recent DYK (joint Israel & Palestine). I don't want to be a nudge, but I researched and wrote most of the content of the Postage stamps and postal history of Israel as well. I don't know how you all decide who is notified, but I am sure that the nominator (User:Ww2censor) would confirm my work on that article (as do the edit histories). For instance, Feb 3-5 I added about 9,000 bytes, Feb 6 another 6,400, and Feb 7-8 another ~3,500. I also commented on the T:TDYK, but perhaps I'm supposed to file a request for notification somewhere? Thanks again, please let me know, be well, HG | Talk 16:15, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- I appreciate your taking the time with this, so thanks for this and your work w/DYK in general. It's a nice feature of Wikipedia and I only wished I had paid attention to it earlier. May I ask you a question? We just spun out Postage stamps and postal history of the Palestinian National Authority. It starts with a cut & paste of 1,600 bytes written beyond 5 days, then adds a paste that was written Feb 9th - bringing it to 3,300. Do you think they'll let us do a 5x expansion of the 1600 bytes, starting w/Feb 9th? We'd need 8000 and we're almost there. If you don't have time or interest to answer this, that's ok, too! Thanks again, be well, HG | Talk 17:26, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I noticed a comment on the talk page, purportedly from one of the MTU field crew, noting that the white house you photographed is actually the former William Kemble house, not the office. The office is the brick building with the cupola removed for eventual restoration. I've corrected the caption, but you may want to re-upload the image at Commons with a more appropriate name. WP:WPNYTIMES?
[edit]LOL, thanks for the note! I was working on Gay Talese articles, but when I wrote The Kingdom and the Power I was stunned to see that nobody had ever written an article on one of the NY Times publishers (the paper has only had five!) so I figured I might as well write it myself while I was on the subject. I'd love to do articles on the history of the major American newspapers someday (these are fascinating historical institutions, with incredibly rich histories. The biggest newspapers could have their own History of the [...] sub articles.), but alas... too many projects, too little time. --JayHenry (talk) 06:30, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Brother - Question?
[edit]Ok, it appears as though I'm not the only one in my house who edits wikipedia. My brother apparently does as well. He has also, apparently, been blocked for what look to be disruptive edits? You reviewed the block and then he, I assume, came into my room and used my computer (where I keep my username and password saved) and edited from there. Is there a way I can change my password, since it's quite obvious to my family members what it is, to keep him from editing from my name if he chooses to? He's only here for like....another day or so then he's going back home to southern Indiana. Batman2005 (talk) 17:46, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- If you've got a moment, could you consider another unblock of my IP address. It's now preventing my wife from actually creating an account. My brother has gone back to school (finally, thank god) and won't be editing from my house again as I've changed the password on our internet account. I placed an unblock request on the page, but them somebody removed it without comment or reason. I would appreciate it. As you said previously, a FULL year for anyone with no previous blocks is quite unwarranted. 4 days is overkill for the type of activity my brother was doing, i'm sure we can agree on that, especially given that it lasted all of what appears to be 3 or 4 days between him and the other user. I'm not against this block, but this IP hasn't edited in over a month. I'm not sure what good it will do. jj137 (talk) 18:48, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- It is amazing - it looks like the IP that reported it had just reverted the spam links before listing it at AIV without even looking at the contribs of the spammer to see when it actually happened. jj137 (talk) 18:55, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Sorry I wasn't so timely in my observation and reporting. The only reason the reported user made no edits for several weeks is because spam links were not immediately noticed by anyone and were allowed to remain. The reported user has edited the article in question thirteen times since 23 November 2007. Ten of those edits involved adding the same spam links, mostly after others have removed them. 71.59.102.86 (talk) 19:35, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for the photo of Town Hall. It is really spiffy and adds a lot of class to the article. I did a lot of revisions this week and added a section of the volunteer fire departments on Town. Your edit summary on the third deletion of this article says salting, but the article does not appear to be salted. Also, would the editor's bad-faith speedy deletion nominations (in the last minute before his block) affect your decision on the length of his block? Thanks for your time and consideration. - I wasn't talking about your deletion of Wednesday 13 (band), I was talking about your deletion of Raymond Amparan, where your edit summary says you salted it. I do agree that the speedy deletion nomination appeared to be in bad faith. MKoltnow 04:37, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Got a Problem. Need your help and advice
[edit]I did something wrong and I don't know how I did it nor how to undo it. I added a "history" section to the article on the Hamlet of Orange Lake. (I have enough to do that I am paid for I shouldn't be doing this at this point in time but that is another story.) Anyway, I thought I had no problem. However, somehow I seem to have deleted "external links" inadvertently. When I go to edit they are there but when I read the final page they are gone. In addition, there are no citations at the end of the article although I added many with my additions and the footnotes do appear in the body of the article. When you get a chance, please tell me what I did wrong, and how to undo it?Nghtownclerk (talk) 23:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
After several hours of cutting, pasting and experimenting, I got the "external links" back on the Orange Lake article. However, no matter what I do I can't get the citations back to the bottom of the article, although it is peppered with my footnotes. I have no idea what I did wrong.
I don't know how I deleted external links in the first place, and don't know why I can't get citations to work.
Just wanted you to know also I was perusing your article about New York State Route 300 and saw that you refer to Kings Hill as the highest elevation in the Town of Newburgh. My own recent revisions to the Town of Newburgh article cite the southernmost part of Marlboro Mountain as the highest elevation. My topographic map shows the part of the mountain in the Town of Newburgh in excess of 750 feet but Kings Hill only 700. For now, I put the phrase "one of" in the appropriate places. I am going to do further research in the morning, so by noon I should have the correct info in both places.Nghtownclerk (talk) 03:06, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

re: your extreme awesomeness
[edit]Thanks SO much for blocking that infernal 150.148.0.27. providence county nhls
[edit]You may have noticed I sorted out the 44 NHLs on List of National Historic Landmarks in Rhode Island plus a few more NRHPs at the bottom of its page. I found more than a few more pre-existing articles to link to, plus i created soe, mostly for Providence County but also three in Newport, just today, to help in sorting out matters (as in Bellevue Avenue Historic District which includes so much there and i needed to see its NRHP docs by adding them to the article). The only other 2 Newport ones created today were Trinity Church (Newport, Rhode Island) and Battle of Rhode Island Site. There were a lot created previously but not linked in the NHL list before, many by person(s) who had created a navbox for Newport mansions. FYI the remaining NHL red-links in Newport, which I don't expect to get to any time soon, and hope you might, are:
- John N. A. Griswold House
- Newport Historic District
- Ocean Drive Historic District
- Old State House (Rhode Island)
- Vernon House
- Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House
Just FYI. Hope you had a good visit. I went through there once in winter-time with someone who was telling me how nice it is in summer-time, but we found couldn't visit any of the mansions. best regards, doncram (talk) 07:08, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Daniel, I guess you blocked this guy because his username is also his personal website's name. I personally disagree with this block, because I don't feel he was much promoting it (unless I missed some very bad edits). The edits at Magic Kingdom are misguided, but it looks much more like someone not understanding why the link to his free pictures gets removed than anything else. The name is not a domain name, and for example I'm pretty sure many of us maintain a personal website with a similar domain name than the one we use here. Could you please consider lifting the block? Thanks! -- lucasbfr talk 00:44, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- No, the policy says that using a company or group name is not is not explicitly prohibited, but it is not recommended. It doesn't even mention websites (and his username does not even match a complete url, it is like if I was "promoting" lucasb.fr, or lucasbfr.net (both don't exist, but they could be my personal blog or something, I have alternate accounts here that would match my website). Looking at his website, I am still struggling to see what organization that would be promoting. It is obviously a personal website (that, or my little browser was called to design it). I seriously think you are stretching the letter and the spirit of the policy too far here... -- lucasbfr talk 12:44, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Cugler
[edit]Hi. On T:TDYK, you added a comment to the Grigore Cugler entry. I have no problem with doing my best to address your concern, but the implications the concern has strike me as odd. Allow me to elaborate.
I have submitted many DYKs so far, and many of them had their hook centered not only on a Romanian-language reference, but on a printed Romanian reference. So have other editors. I see the DYK system has become more organized since, but surely one cannot exclude hooks from appearing on the first page because they trace back to a non-English source... I mean, what sort of verification of the source is expected? In this case, I will do my best to translate exactly what the source I used says, and you can corroborate the translation by asking other Romanian users if it is correct (in cases like this, I've seen that editors seek assistance from members of local projects - weirdly enough, I am one of the more active members of WikiProject Romania, so I should say, from other members of such a project). I'm not sure, however, if this process of translation should be automatically expected from users in order to verify a source for the DYK process. Furthermore, since wikipedia actually favors printed sources, how would (or, indeed, could) one run a quick check to see if the citation matches the source? (Note that this applies to English and non-English sources alike.) Would you actually put entries on hold because they confirm with the strictest of wikipedia's requirements? Not to mention that, in this case, we are talking about a Romanian writer who is still largely unknown in the Western world, so most basic references to him are in Romanian.
In Cugler's case, two references (marked 1 and 4, and, respectively: an article in a regional newspaper; an essay by a literary critic) quote his letter to Pauker. For some reasons, the two sets of quotations differ at the end (if I'm allowed to presume, I think one paraphrased the original text and forgot to indicate that it did). The article cites the part where the two sources agree: "noua orientare politică a guvernului român, care se îndepărtează de convingerile şi sentimentele mele" (as per the translation I provided in the article). Only reference 1 mentions the rumor according to which his was seen as a gesture of defiance: "Demisia formulată în termeni cu totul neobişnuiţi de cunoscutul diplomat interbelic Grigore Cugler a stârnit şi vâlvă, şi spaimă, fiindcă nimeni nu cutezase până atunci s-o înfrunte pe temuta femeie-comisar Ana Pauker, care preluase portofoliul Externelor." This translates as: "The resignation expressed in completely unusual terms by the interwar diplomat Grigore Cugler sparked, at the same time, rumor and fear, as no one had yet dared confront the feared female commissar Ana Pauker, who had taken over the leadership of Foreign Affairs." Reference 4 introduces its reference to the letter of resignation with the words: "În ultimii ani au apărut date noi despre cariera diplomatului Cugler [...] terminată în noiembrie 1947, odată cu instalarea Anei Pauker în fruntea unui nou minister de Externe, controlat în întregime de comunişti." This means: "Over the past years, new data has emerged in reference to the career of Cugler the diplomat [...] which ended in November 1947, at the same time as Ana Pauker's inauguration at the forefront of a new Foreign Ministry, entirely controlled by the communists." After this quote, the reference moves to discussing the serious nature of the letter, contrasting it with the supposed perception of Cugler as "trifling" etc. - which, as you'll see, is talked about in the article, but not in the hook. I don't suppose that the rest of the hook - him being an avant-garde writer or a classical violinist, and him living the rest of his life in Peru, need more referencing. If you want me to indicate the relevant fragments for these tidbits, to the measure where they are not self-explanatory, I shall provide them to, along with my translation.
Feel free to ask for more checks on the references, my translation, and whichever detail, but allow me to wonder if this trend is taking us in the right direction or leading to practical results. Thank you for your patience in reading this message. Best, Dahn (talk) 21:01, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you. The thing was that simply not noticing the T:TDYK issue would have meant that the article could not have made it on the main page - not an intentional exclusion, but an implicit one. Even as such, I actually reviewed myself. Very few people actually watch T:TDYK, and that also applies to those who submit the entires. Perhaps we could streamline these efforts if, any time there is a language problem, you and all other reviewers would also leave a note somewhere else - on a project talk page, on a notice board, or on the user talk page of one one speaker of that language. Cheers, Dahn (talk) 12:14, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I Am Back From My Conference
[edit]I just wanted you to know I am back in town. I have a lot of work to do mostly with digging up citations for things I have already written (looking them up? Not a problem! Finding the time to do it? THAT'S the problem!) I guess it was becauase I was away for the week that I discovered I was not "logged in" when I tried to edit. Some of my previous edits identify me by a number not by my name. I had to search to remind myself of my log on name and password, but I have done it successfully so hopefully that problem won't recur. I just wanted you to know some things quickly that I wished to call to your attention: a. I am sorry I even got into the "elevations" part of the Town of Newburgh. My intent was to add one or two sentences to the "Geography" section indicating that Cronomer Hill is the higehest elevation in the Town of Newburgh. Can you imagine my shock and surprise when I checked the topographic map to get the elevation of Cronomer Hill and learned that it is NOT the highest elevation --- in fact apparently isn't even in the top four? It is quite clear from your comments that you know a hell of a lot more about this topic than I do and I should have simply left it alone. (Incidentially, according to this map Marlboro Mountain does reach 1,000 feet in elevataion but considerably north of the Town of Newburgh line.) b. I got a giggle out of your observation that I have done nothing about the school districts in the town and that they are much more simple in Newburgh than in other towns. Please be advised that I have every intention of doing something someday but it is going to take a lot of research. You may not be aware that the "consolidation" of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District took place after a great deal of political controversy including three referenda (the results of which were ignored by the New York State Education Department) and lawsuits left and right, culminating in the Newburgh School District expelling all Town of NEwburgh residents from NFA for 1962-63. This is something I don't want to touch until I can get some research done and hope you are patient. It is a thoroughly fascinating story which would be of interest to those who call my office asking why there are four school districts which cover the Town of Newburgh. c. As far as the zip code section goes, one of the biggest and most recurrent problems I have in my office is that caused by the seven different zip codes in the Town of Newburgh. I composed that section with the intent of having a reasonable, easy to understand answer for people, and hope this was at least a first step towards that. People come into my office virtually every day for certificaation that they live in the Town of Newburgh, for one reason or the other. The Commissioner of Jurors office in Kingston continually summons Town of Newburgh residents to Jury Duty in Ulster County. They just plain doesn't understand that many people with a 12589 zip live in Orange County. Many if not most people summoned simply appear for Jury Duty and dont' question it. Another problem I have is that Wallkill HIgh School quite commendably passes out voter registration forms to its students 18 years old or older and impresses them with the civic responsibility of voting. Then, they mail them all to the Board of Elections in Kingston, not grasping that a large percentage of their students live in Orange, not Ulster, COunty. The kids show up to vote and are turned away and then are turned off on the system. I understand and applaud and totally agree with your desire for more citations. I am learning from reading many other wikipedia articles that this is not as difficult as it might seem. For example: I learned from one of your articles that google maps are acceptable. This is a big help. You may note that I added a section on Gidneytown to the Town of Newburgh which includes reference to Gidney Pond. I know all of this information because I lived in this hamlet since I was 3 years old. I fished in Gidney Pond as a kid. I learned to swim in Gidney Pond (successfully) and tried to learn how to ice skate on Gidney Pond (not as successfully). You ask: how can I certify all of this information? Well, it is easy. All I have to do is go to the Newburgh Library and dig out the copy of the Newburgh News from microfilm from when the child drowned there. My problem isn't doing it: my problem is finding the TIME to do it (this coming weekend is out of the question). d. Don't want to be critical, but in your article about Quassaick Creek you mention that Bushfield Creek is its only named tributary. Apparently you forgot that Gidneytown Creek is a tributary. They hook up in the City of Newburgh. e. Also, your article on Chadwick Lake indicates that the dam was built (in 1926) for the specific purpose of creating a water supply for the Town of Newburgh. Please be advised that Chadwick Lake was privately owned until 1961. To the best of my knowledge, whoever built the dam did not do it for this purpose. When it was suggested that the town purchase the lake as a potential future water supply, there was a great deal of controversy, because some people contended it was a waste of money -- the Town of Newburgh would NEVER grow to the point where it would need a reservoir! (ha, ha) Please let me do some more research on this and get back to you with details. Iam sorry but I have to get back to work now. I am totally fascinated by Wikipedia and am having a great deal of fun with it, but I have got to keep reminding myself that I have a lot of responsibilities and I am going to have to keep Wikipedia on the back burner and come to it only when I have free times! You have no idea how pleased I am that you have taken me under your wing. I don't know what I could have done without your guidance and advice.Nghtownclerk (talk) 15:48, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree the user has been a bit abrasive, but I think some of the substance of both comments was warranted. You did correct yourself from "factual allegation" to "allegation of fact", and the second post was defending your assertion that he was "taunting" you. Is there a sockpuppetry issue here? Question regarding suspected IP sockpuppetry
[edit]Another admin suggested that I contact you regarding my post here. I believe that an editor evading blocks is attempting to IP hop in order to participate in a discussion. The IP is of a range for which two other IPs in the same range were blocked as sockpuppets of an IP that you originally blocked. The IPs in this range have incredibly similar edits made to video game, episode, and character related articles. I apologize if posting the evidence on the aforelinkedto page was not the correct place, but I thought those participating in the discussion should be aware as I am not sure if we are supposed to oblige a potential ban/block evading editor. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des CitrouillesTally-ho! 18:10, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Chadwick Lake
[edit]Daniel, I made a major addition to your Chadwick Lake article. I added a rather extensive history section, all fully documented. Of course, I did not change a single word that you wrote, simply added to it. You might want to note also some additions I made to the Balmville (Hamlet) article, which I summarized in briefer form on Town of Newburgh. Hope I am doing OK.Nghtownclerk (talk) 04:23, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Do you have a history of your image of the Erie Depot(i.e.; who owned and operated it, etc.?). If so, perhaps I can use it to recommend an article on it for WikiProject Trains. ----DanTD (talk) 15:04, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

- That's good to know. I saw the image in Wikimedia Commons, and I thought "Hey, there ought to be an article on it," and then I found it on the main Wikipedia page. I was thinking of transferring some images from Port Jefferson (LIRR station) to a gallery in the commons, but I've been concerned that they won't show up again anywhere within Wikipedia itself. One of those images was added to the article on Port Jefferson Station, New York. ----DanTD (talk) 15:27, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, and have salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).
Well also make preparations for our exciting Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, a free content photography contest for Columbia University students planned for Friday March 28 (about 2 weeks after our meeting).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.
You're also invited to subscribe to the public Wikimedia New York City mailing list, which is a great way to receive timely updates.

[edit]I promoted one of your hooks according to what I could confirm and moved the discussion to the talk page so that we can hopefully sort this out. Gatoclass (talk) 17:55, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- That's okay, I don't want to make a big deal out of this either. It was partly my fault as the update was three hours late, I was in a hurry, and I got a bit frustrated when I couldn't quickly confirm any of your first three hooks.
- In regards to the cites though, next time you cite to a Google book, do you think you could cite the actual page numbers? For the first hook, I couldn't see any reference to a "first case" so I read on a couple of pages from there to no avail, when I should have started back a few pages prior. If I'd had page numbers, it would have been much easier :)
- I'm also still mystified by the cite you left for the third hook, because it wasn't to a source at all. What was that about? Gatoclass (talk) 05:22, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- Clicking the link in both cases would have taken you right to the page. I assumed that anyone checking the sources would have clicked that link
- Yes, of course I checked the link Daniel, I check the sources for all hooks I review. I was just pointing out that the link didn't take me to the page where the relevant discussion actually begins, but to the end of it. If you had included a range of pages, then I would have known exactly where to go to find the relevant info.
- Thanks for the explanation re: the Supreme Court case numbers, but I don't think you can just assume everyone will know what they refer to. A lot of readers will have no idea what a cite like that means, and obviously I was one of them.
- Missing the authorship in the second link though was entirely my mistake, no excuses for that one. I probably would have realized my mistake if I'd spent a bit longer, but as I still had two more hooks to choose from, I went onto the next hoping it would be a bit easier to confirm. And that's where I found the cryptic statement and gave up in despair :) Gatoclass (talk) 07:48, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Hectares
[edit]Hi Daniel, I have become involved in a discussion with Ruhrfisch and Dincher about appropriate metric units for land area. They referred me to some comments you had made concerning the use of the unit hectare. Your comments indicate that hectares are officially considered deprecated (at least that is the meaning I have taken from your comments). I have looked in the MoS and not really found a direct answer. Can you help me with some source or authority on this policy? Thanks in advance. Bleakcomb (talk) 06:47, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, the link to your comment is Talk:White Deer Hole Creek#My edits, and some questions Bleakcomb (talk) 11:21, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Someone may have been referring to this NIST SI Guide - Special Publication 330. Short story is that the NIST document is meant to be a US edit of the BIPM document and or web content that you mentioned. Looking closer at the NIST document it says that it is based on the 7th ed. of the BIPM document. You and I are looking at the 8th ed. of the BIPM doc. On WP there is this article, that refers to both sources. The template that the article includes is here. (I don't understand why the article is split into the template namespace like that.) The template, with regard to the hectare, reflects the outdated NIST source only. An apparently now defunct editor User:Bobblewik made these edits to the template, adding 'Non-SI units whose use is not encouraged' to the title of the last table, which is text from the NIST document. The same user has also made many edits to articles excising hectares from them. Here is an [example]. Note the loss of precision. This article is about a park on my side of the globe. Most Australian protected area articles have received similar
vandalismtreatment from that user. Makes me cross. When I have some time I will start to address the template. I am not sure if there is an easy way of addressing the articles that have been needlessly changed. Also, my belief from reading is that if a source is in acres, then hectares would be an officially accepted, commonly used and well understood conversion (perhaps among others, but, certainly not invalid). Bleakcomb (talk) 02:02, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
- You can't fool me that easily! Which opinion? but I personally use hectares for land areas less than one square km. or that it's better to use hectares for land parcels >1 km². Greater than or less than?
- Apologies. I had read your comments on the talk page, but I had not tracked down your changes.
I don't see how what I have written supports that opinion. I would beg to differ. Restating... my belief from reading is that if a source is in acres, then hectares would be an officially accepted, commonly used and well understood conversion (perhaps among others, but, certainly not invalid). If a large number hectares is unwieldy as a number, the number of acres is worse (approx 2.5 times worse). To pluck a number, something like 5,000 or 10,000 seems unwieldy for either acres or hectares. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bleakcomb (talk • contribs) 04:09, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
The Adirondack Park example maybe an anomaly caused by a land manager choosing a unit measurement (in this case, acres) for all parks under their admin. Yes, as I had said to RuhrFisch and Dincher, sq km and sq miles seem more appropriate for states and countries.
Please have a look at this. user:Chrisjj uses the same less than 1 km² limit that you do. I don't know what the attribution is or what the source is, but I have never heard of it outside WP. Please read the responses of the respondents from metricated countries. Bear in mind that user:Chrisjj is from the UK and should have disqualified himself from the discussion. I see that although discussion was had and I think a reasonable consensus formed, it wasn't reflected in the MoS. Please understand (note the pleading, desperate tone) that what user:Chrisjj and yourself advocate by using km2 above a value of one can lead to awkward expression for metric users. For non-metric users, metric is just awkward and unfamiliar from the get-go and some may not appreciate the additional oddity of inappropriate metric units. For metric users, hectares are usually the thing wherever acres are used. I am sure as an editor and reviewer of articles, you wish to eliminate awkward expression. For metric users, it is similar to giving you 25 sqcm[convert: unknown unit], rather than 25 sqcm[convert: unknown unit]. Another example of awkwardness added to WP here. Bleakcomb (talk) 02:18, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your response and your patience on this subject. I am not sure of the protocol for resurrecting archived conversations, but anyway here it is. Bobblewik must have really stirred things up. In almost every article with an Australian subject and land area that I have found has had the hectares converted to km2 by Bobblewik. What a pain. I have found lots more examples and sources that use hectares for managed land area. I won't clog up your talk with them here. I may be wrong with your speed of light example, though your teacher may have used a cgs based metric system (was common in science), rather than the SI which is based on MKS. c for me was 3×108 ms-1. Anyway, one last request; what would you recommend as a next step to get this recognised in the MoS? My first thought was in the talk page of the numbers section of the MoS. Other than that I thought of around the Village Pump somewhere. Wherever I put it, I will try to leave you out of it for the moment. I won't link back to this discussion on our talk pages unless I really need to. It might just generate a bit of noise for a while that might be distracting, unless of course you need another distraction. If you don't see it, I will post a note back in your talk when some consensus transpires. Your thoughts would be appreciated and thanks again. Bleakcomb (talk) 07:20, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Categories of protected areas by state
[edit]Hi -- I have been considering what are "protected areas" of or in a given state, brought up by some recent edits by User:Hmains, including his editing of a "Category:Protected areas in California", but coming to my attention via his editing of African Burial Ground National Monument. I had never paid attention to the protected areas term before. But i am up to speed now, and in fact have come to a point where currently i think that all such categories ought to be deleted, due to ambiguities in the protection by or of whom, and in ambiguity for the term "protected area" except at the national level when used by the IUCN. I noted earlier that you had put in a definition for areas protected by the state of New York, in "Category:Protected areas in New York" and just now I further see you created the breakout by state at "Category:Protected areas of the United States by state". Could you please take a look at the last 2 topics of discussion in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Protected areas? I am inclined to nominate deletion of all of the categories of protected areas "of" or "in" a given state, in order to focus appropriate attention, but i would hold off if there is actually any discussion between Hmains, you, and me there, instead.
