May songs

May songs
This looks delicious. DanCherek (talk) 21:50, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Another good one! DanCherek (talk) 21:52, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

I have the quirky DYK today, which is rare, and I don't quite know why music for peace was deemed quirky. - I took and picked the blue-and-yellow pic last year for May. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:06, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

Well done! I don't know either, but in any case it's still a nice way to end the DYK set. The photo is really nice. (I would be remiss not to comment on the delectable Flammkuchen and Maultaschen. Learning German, one food at a time!) DanCherek (talk) 14:13, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
serious today, no food - Gidon Kremer played a Vorgabe (before the concert), a violin solo, Requiem (2014) by Igor Loboda, dedicated to the victims of the Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, and the group played the usual encore, by a Ukrainian whose name I didn't understand. One of two Russians featured was present, he lives in Belgium. It was all a celebration of his 75th birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:09, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
What is a Vorgabe? DanCherek (talk) 21:26, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
I tried to explain: it's a play on the word "Zugabe" = encore, lit. "added gift". It was added before the official program, after two speeches, then Schubert, then two more speeches by students of the Kronberg Academy, then the rest of the program. Kremer wore a blue&yellow bow for the Vorgabe. - Will you nominate Melody for DYK? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:40, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
Already done: Template:Did you know nominations/Melody (Skoryk). Additional hooks welcome! DanCherek (talk) 21:45, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
I'd add the composer, or it looks like an Easter egg. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:52, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
Good point... do you like one of these more than the others?
DanCherek (talk) 21:55, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
thank you, and approved already, and good choice! - two songs today: Hey Hey Rise Up! (written by friends) and Glauben können wie du, sung by the person I have on DYK today, right below the other. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:50, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
I saw the Johannes zu Eltz hook, and it's my favorite one in the set. That guy rocks, for speaking out on an issue that is deeply personal to me. DanCherek (talk) 11:35, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the encouragement! I was a bit hesitant, one thing saying this as almost the only thing about him, the other that he was more prominent for having been instrumental in the dismissal of the infamous Bishop of Limburg. But I didn't want to feed sensation only, and thought the one thing speaks volumes about him. Did you listen to his unpretentious singing? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:35, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
Yep, he sounds great! And I'm glad the article has a good photo of him. DanCherek (talk) 12:38, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

We sang the song last Sunday, DYK? - today performances in Ukraine - for Ukraine - for peace, at the bottom an imaginary set of eight DYK - and more May pics--Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:10, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

today more pics, and should this woman have an article? - or only her sons? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:23, 13 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the interesting biography! DanCherek (talk) 14:45, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
The violinist who played it for me is nominated for DYK, Aleksey Semenenko (meet here), and I'd like help with the hook wording - we performed an evensong yesterday, first after March 2020! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:37, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
It seems like the nomination has been approved since this message. DanCherek (talk) 12:31, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
yes, but not mine - it hurts but I better give up, or it will hurt more --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:14, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
my choir in Idstein performed an evensong (pictured), two years and two months after the last! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:43, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
How nice! I didn't know what an evensong was before yesterday, but looked it up when I saw this. DanCherek (talk) 20:54, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
a strong singing woman today --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:48, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
My favorite opera! And a fabulous image in the image slot. Woohoo! Wish we had some recordings... DanCherek (talk) 21:47, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
thank you - today saw my pic of the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra on the Main page - blue light for you --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:43, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Reverting move

Hi, i see you did a revert here. Your edit summary said that one user asked you to do it because there was an ongoing discussion.

In fact i started that discussione and the user who forwarded the request to you was the only one against it ( and the only one expressing himself until today) based on specious argument, first calling WP:COMMON and then backtracing it when results went against his personal preference. You can see it by yourself on the [wikiproject talk page]. In those days no other user partecipated in the discussion, so following WP policy and objective result on the popularity name i proceeded to make the move.

Over and over wikipedia policy reminds their users to give valid arguments over changes/edits and that discussions are not votes. Also not to go against wikipedia policy and to follow WP:COMMON when choosing the title of an article.

I suggest you to reconsider your decision now that you have a more clear grasp of the situation, or to elaborate further your rationales behind it, if i didn't fairly represent it in this message. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Opencross (talkcontribs) 17:05, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Opencross! Thanks for the message. My move was essentially just correcting the word "Championsip" to "Championship" in the title. Since your initial move to 's-Hertogenbosch Open has been contested by another editor, and with limited participation at the WikiProject discussion, you should start a Requested Move discussion on the talk page by following the steps at WP:RSPM. A bot will then add a notification at the top of the page and at Wikipedia:Requested moves so that more editors can discuss the proposed move, and you can also notify WT:TENNIS of the discussion. After a week or so (sometimes more if productive discussion is ongoing), someone will close the discussion and evaluate whether there is consensus for the proposed move. DanCherek (talk) 17:23, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
I have done the RM before, i thought this move was uncontroversial given the WP policy i was following, i was just pre-informing the project as courtesy for all editors participating, given that the page is a current event.. But, fair enough, if someone likes to contest those policies i'll put up the RM as per similar cases. Thanks for your reply. Cheers. Opencross (talk) 17:28, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
An RM definitely seems like the way to go then. Thanks and good luck! DanCherek (talk) 17:30, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
I'm sorry to bother you, but i would like if you could take a close look at what it's happening on this article's talk page.
It seems very irregular to me that someone who is not an admin, go ahead and close an RM skipping all the steps to close it mentioned on the template page, and move the discussion back to the talk page of the project, (the opposite of what you too suggested to me to do, which i did, leaving also a message saying the discussion can continue on the talk page of the article). This is the same user this afternoon reverted my page move, too. I think he's kind of thinking he "owns" that page to the point of using his knowledge of wiki templates to make questionable choices which i don't know if he has the right to (can someone who is not an admin move a RM??), to the effect of resulting a disruptive editor. I repeat i have never ever seen anyone moving a RM to a different talk page, so pardon me if i'm mistaken on this, but i think i was right moving it to an RM, because that would go in the way of having a discussion and buiding consensum and also will have, usually, an outside admin who will look the RM and will close it, a very different procedures of asking casually for comments on the talk page of the project. It's startling to see someone forcing his way using a forumshop template to justify it, i think some admin should take a good look at the whole situation which is, in my view, clearly out of control. Thanks. Opencross (talk) 23:24, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
I think the action was taken in good faith (an attempt to redirect the existing RM banner to the WT:TENNIS talk page), but led to a technical glitch where the RM bot removed both the banner and the discussion listing. I've replied at the discussion, let's see where it goes from there. DanCherek (talk) 23:41, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
Opencross is telling things here that are just not true. Firstly, I’m not the only one opposing them. There are three editors already disagreeing with them in the WP:TENNIS discussion. They are actually currently the only one supporting the move. Secondly, I have no feeling of owning anything at all. As you explained already, I executed nothing but a technical closure of one talk page discussion so as to allow the actual RM to occur where discussion of the move was actually already happening. I would appreciate it if Opencross would stop these continuous accusations of bad faith against me.Tvx1 10:17, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello @DanCherek I hope you're doing good. I'm sruggling with adding the reception. Can you write the review from TOI. Thanks, for your consideration. C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 02:57, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't have time to get to this right now. The brief quote you have in the article right now is fine. If you would like to expand it more, I would recommend reading the review closely and trying to summarize the reviewer's thoughts in your own words. DanCherek (talk) 13:54, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
No issues. Sure, I will try to write in my own words. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 14:12, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

yes that's definitely fine

Hi, yes, that's definitely fine. Thanks for dealing with this. I judged that the request was uncontroversial because of the grammar and sources arguments, and the fact that there were no previous moves or RMs for the article. Do you think there's anything else I should have taken into account before making this move? Dr. Vogel (talk) 15:03, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi DrVogel, I saw that initial request and was kind of on the fence – there was a unanimously opposed RM in 2016 proposing a move to Indus Valley tradition, but no one really talked about the capitalisation of "Civilisation". I think the combination of the article being a former FA, a level-3 vital article, one covered by the IPA discretionary sanctions, and a talk page with 967 watchers probably meant that someone would probably object at some point But I see where you were coming from, and the reason for declining the initial request wouldn't have been as clear-cut compared to some other requests at RM/TR. DanCherek (talk) 15:08, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Question from Tharemnant (10:33, 13 June 2022)

i'd like to write an article about myself actually my Biography how can i go about it --Tharemnant (talk) 10:33, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Tharemnant, and welcome to Wikipedia! Writing an autobiography on Wikipedia is an example of conflict of interest editing and is strongly discouraged. It's difficult to write a neutral, verifiable autobiography, and there are many pitfalls. Please see Wikipedia:Autobiography#Creating an article about yourself for more information. Hope that helps, and I'm also going to post a message on your talk page with some additional links about Wikipedia that you may find useful! DanCherek (talk) 12:51, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Australia national cricket team record by opponent is changing by one idiot according to his will. I need help. He will Bangladesh dominate Australia in cricket records which is false. Idris Munaf Shaikh2 (talk) 09:12, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

I don't know too much about cricket so I probably won't be of much help, but if you have specific diffs of persistent disruptive edits by another editor, you can try reporting at WP:ANI. DanCherek (talk) 12:10, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

In Amber - article, still not patrolled

The In Amber article still doesn't appear in Google when typing a research with the words "In Amber album Hercules and Love Affair Wikipedia". Could you tell me which person(s) I could contact to make this article "patrolled". Thanks. Carliertwo (talk) 16:49, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

The page has now been reviewed by Ingenuity, so now it's up to Google to index it – there's nothing else that anyone on Wikipedia can do, but hopefully it will be up soon. DanCherek (talk) 19:32, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

Page move

19:01, 20 June 2022‎ DanCherek talk contribs‎ m 3,748 bytes 0‎ DanCherek moved page Zionist Party to Ceire Cion without leaving a redirect: Requested by Mellohi! at WP:RM/TR : Per RM on talk page.

Accordingly, please delete Category:Zionist Party politicians (I already moved content to Category:Ceire Cion politicians) Loew Galitz (talk) 19:07, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
I'm not an administrator so I do not have the ability to delete anything, so I'm afraid there's nothing I can do here. Following a page move, it looks like you can properly request a speedy rename at WP:CFDS, probably under criterion C2D. Good luck! DanCherek (talk) 19:12, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

ANYONE (band) page under attack

Hi Dan - The page ANYONE (band) is under attack by Issac Denwood who joined wikipedia a few hours ago and has contributed nothing but attacks to the ANYONE page. It seems the account was created specifically to attack the page. In addition to removing all but one of the pictures (claiming they are 'self promotional'?), he has removed entire sections of the article (all well cited with links) and has even nominated it for immediate deletion. The ANYONE page has been up for 23 years. Can you help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Togetherment (talkcontribs) 15:25, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

I previously removed the template because they had mistakenly added one meant for user talk pages, so the page is not currently up for deletion. By the way, I wouldn't really call the previous "Critical Acclaim" section "well cited" – it was almost entirely sourced to anyoneden.net. DanCherek (talk) 16:07, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
the critical acclaim section links are directed to the official website where every review is clickable to the actual site where the review was generated. Can we put the section back up and simply direct the citations directly to the source? also, taking down all but one photo because they are 'self promotion'?? every site we referenced has numerous photos. Issac denwood opened his wiki account today, and has done nothing but attack our page. What can be done? Togetherment (talk) 18:05, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Who is "we" and what do you mean by "our page" – do you have any affiliation with the band? DanCherek (talk) 18:06, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
My name is Julie Weiss, I am the head of PR for TogethermenT Records. It was called to my attention that this page was under attack. What is the proper way to proceed? Togetherment (talk) 18:09, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Alright, well, you should not have been editing the article directly in the first place, and you need to declare your status as a paid editor according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that means disclosing the relationship on your user page, on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries. This disclosure is required by Wikipedia's terms of use. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest. Once you have reviewed the conflict of interest guidelines, I recommend suggesting any future edits that you'd like to make on the talk page of the article, using edit requests (you may find the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard helpful). And please stop describing the other editor's edits as attacks – they raised some evidently valid concerns. I'll put some more information on your talk page about this. DanCherek (talk) 18:15, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
I certainly intend to follow all rules, although I must admit I might not know them all. our intent is simply to keep the page up to date with basic facts, like the release of a new album. The new user 'Issac Denwood' who has been a member for a few hours removed that section entirely? I put it back up with solid citations for EVERY sentence, citations form the AP - associated press etc. This user also deleted all but one photographs. Is there a rule prohibiting photographs of the subject? Togetherment (talk) 20:43, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) You have made it abundantly clear that you have no intention of following “all the rules” Wikipedia accounts are strictly single person use you keep saying “our”? You have failed to disclose your paid editing status on your user page despite twice being asked to, you are also edit warring to include your prefered version of the article. You have a very clear conflict of interest and need to make edit requests on the article’s talk page, using the request edit template and a reliable source. Theroadislong (talk) 21:02, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Oh no! I think that another user helped me add 'paid editing status'. I also applied for the name change. I didn't mean to edit war, I was just trying to add/update the details of the record that just came out, with citations on ever sentence. I will use the 'talk' method if i do anymore editing. thanks Togetherment (talk) 21:25, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Here's an easy way to properly disclose your status: go to Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard/Paid, click "Disclose Payment", add the relevant information, and click "Publish changes". DanCherek (talk) 21:31, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
thanks - on it :) Togetherment (talk) 21:37, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello DanCherek,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, NPP backlog, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12910 articles, as of 22:00, 19 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

How to add photos --Isaac Trappkid (talk) 21:27, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Isaac Trappkid, welcome to Wikipedia! If you are asking about how to upload an image, there is a detailed guide at Wikipedia:Uploading images. Please keep in mind that unless you are specifically uploading a fair-use image that is the subject of commentary in an article, any images you upload need to either be in the public domain or released under a compatible license by the copyright holder. Page mover granted

Hello, DanCherek. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

June music

June songs

Ukrainian peace music is "on" today, with the conductor! - Pentecost (on last Sunday and Monday in Germany) brought a rich harvest of great music in two church services (one with me singing in choir) and two concerts with my brother in the orchestra, - four pictures I took besides the symphonic one. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:15, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, great articles and photos! I'm seeing a lot of foxglove where I live too – just didn't know the name for it until now. DanCherek (talk) 14:18, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
My song collection is especially rich, look, and the hall where I first heard DFD, Pierre Boulez and Murray Perahia. Do you find the baby deer in the meadow (last row)? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:27, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
YES! How adorable! It looks like a puppy. I hope it wasn't lost! DanCherek (talk) 03:00, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
After a while of frozeness for both of us (long enough to take the pic) the creature hopped into the meadow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:30, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
I recently visited Boulder, Colorado, for a conference and some hikes. At the hiking resort, there were lots of wild deer walking around and grazing, just totally used to (and unafraid of) people, it was very cool! DanCherek (talk) 12:42, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Lovely place, I remember blooming meadows. - today: a song about getting through the night, after plenty of music over the weekend --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:17, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Request of guidance on attribution of translations

Hello Mr Cherek. Yesterday you were kind enough to give me some guidance on attribution. Thank you! I was unaware of this need.

I have also used information from other wikis, specifically kiswahili wikipedia, and was wondering how to attribute it properly? In the few times I have done this I added a translation tag on the talk page with the wiki and page link to it. I have never added any attributions into my edit summary as you guided me yesterday.

Is there a more proper way to do this? Any templates like you gave me for the english wiki attributions?

Thank you for any advice, BevoLJ (talk) 08:26, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi BevoLJ, thanks for asking. WP:TFOLWP has more information about this. Providing attribution for translated material is similar to attribution for copying within Wikipedia. An easy way to do it is to use an edit summary like this: Translating from :fr:Exact name of French article; see its history for attribution.
If you want to go back and fix some unattributed translations, just make a small edit to the page with an edit summary like this:Content was translated from :fr:Exact name of French article on 21 June 2022; see its history for attribution. so that it's clear when the translation occurred (replace the example date with the actual one). Let me know if you have any questions about that. DanCherek (talk) 11:12, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply. That is exactly what I was looking to learn, very helpful!
I do not know I will have time today to go back through history, but the second part is particularly helpful for when I can.
Thank you, -BevoLJ (talk) 11:25, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

12Stone Copyvio Revdel

I saw that you put a copyvio-revdel tag on 12Stone due to this edit, but I did want to point out that the IP only re-added the content, the offending copyvio has been part of the article since it's creation, and I only noticed and removed it on June 22. I don't know if or how it should be addressed since I know little about copyvio history deletion, but I thought I would point that the copyvio problem goes throughout the entire history of the article. - Aoidh (talk) 19:43, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks! I saw that but I am usually reluctant to request revision deletion for so many edits, stretching back for more than a decade, because it hides so many intervening edits. It does make the revdel request a bit less meaningful, though, I agree, but hopefully it can help deter the content from being added again in the future. Thanks for catching it in the first place. Hello , I apologize it’s part of my university assignment to weekly contribute in Wikipedia . You can block me but just wait for the professor to grade the contributions please — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hajar2022 (talkcontribs) 13:33, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Please remove your report @dancherek just until my professor grades my contributions and I apologize for the unintentional copy rights violations Hajar2022 (talk) 13:35, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Hajar2022, it's best if you add future comments to the noticeboard thread, but what's important is that you see what was problematic about your previous edits and that you commit to not copying from other websites in the future. DanCherek (talk) 13:37, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Respond on the ANI thread, oh and your professor cannot see your contributions (what course is this anyway?) because we've had to delete them for the copyright violations. Canterbury Tail talk 13:39, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Henri Coutard

The article Henri Coutard you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Henri Coutard for issues which need to be addressed. Ajahn Brahm

Hi DanCherek, I felt the need to delete wholesale your most recent edit on the Ajahn Brahm page. Apologies if in doing so, I also removed content that may have genuinely improved the article. The truth is, as I scrolled through the changes you had made, there was altogether too much material I felt had no place in the article, and it would have taken too much work on my part to selectively remove individual changes you had made. There is no need to add the type of excessive linking that you made to the article, as per WP:OVERLINK. In addition, some of the content you wrote, for example, regarding Brahm's education, does not bear much relevance to the article topic, especially as it relates more to the school itself, so that doesn't need to be there. If you feel that I have unfairly undone your work, please discuss it with me on the article talk page before reverting. Thank you. Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 04:38, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Revirvlkodlaku, no worries, but I've only made one edit to that page (Special:Diff/1096318514), and that involved removing three paragraphs that an IP editor had recently added. I haven't actually added any text of my own to the article, so I'm not sure if your message above was intended for me? DanCherek (talk) 12:17, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh, I see what happened. I think you may have missed a couple of the previous edits, so whatever changes that editor made remained after your revert. No worries :) Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 16:34, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

edit to Ion Stoica

Didn't see it copyrighted, did you? 49.184.21.68 (talk) 19:22, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Per WP:COPYRIGHT: All creative works are copyrighted, by international agreement, unless either they fall into the public domain or their copyright is explicitly disclaimed. It doesn't need a copyright notice to be protected by copyright, so please stop copying text from other websites to Wikipedia (you have done this on several articles now). DanCherek (talk) 19:24, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
THAT's EXACTLY the point: something has to be CREATIVE, but scientific statements are rarely creative, they are just facts. Hence, in practically all cases courts have rejected copyright violations as long as they are just statements or limited to a sentence or two. I happen to have read two books about copyright. Fourth, fifth, and sixth derivatives of position

Hi DanCherek,

You recently reverted several changes I made to the page titled "Fourth, fifth, and sixth derivatives of position." The reason for making these changes was the following statement that appears on said page:

"Unlike the first three derivatives, the higher-order derivatives rarely appear, and have little practical use..."

which is not only untrue, it is also disparaging toward a topic of active research in the dynamics community. The uses of higher-order derivatives are being investigated, and it appears that they *do* have practical uses. I was trying to address this untrue claim with illustrative examples from the literature. While I was at it, I also edited several related pages. I see those changes have been reverted as well.

If the Wiki community does not like my changes, that is one thing, but I assume that you value accuracy. How can I/we flag the above statement? 172.249.153.200 (talk) 15:54, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi! There were several issues with your edits. They were copied in part from this Springer article which is not compatibly licensed, and collectively the edits seemed to be made for the purpose of excessively increasing citations to Sanders' publications. If you have a conflict of interest regarding this – which appears to be the case – you should read the WP:COI guidelines carefully and then suggest any edits you want to make on the talk pages of articles (for example, at Talk:Fourth, fifth, and sixth derivatives of position) with a properly disclosed conflict of interest. DanCherek (talk) 18:54, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
No, the edits were not copied from the article; they were paraphrased in my own words. As I said, I was trying to use examples from the literature to illustrate that there *are* practical uses of higher-order derivatives, and Sanders's work is a prime example. I see now that there was already a discussion about the strong language I referred to ("little practical use"), so I am not the only one who thinks this ought to be changed. It seems that multiple community members are in agreement here. I am not sure what the issue is in including what I added. 172.249.153.200 (talk) 20:44, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
As I've said, the first step is to disclose your conflict of interest with Sanders and/or his institution. That is a prerequisite to making any edits related to him or his work. DanCherek (talk) 20:47, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I didn't realize adding citations to literature was a conflict of interest. I thought that was just standard practice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.249.153.200 (talk) 21:13, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
I just found this on the Wikipedia guidelines under "Follow the normal protocol":
When you find a passage in an article that is biased, inaccurate, or unsourced the best practice is to improve it if you can rather than deleting salvageable text. For example, if an article appears biased, add balancing material or make the wording more neutral. Include citations for any material you add. If you do not know how to fix a problem, ask for help on the talk page.
To help other editors understand the reasoning behind your edits, always explain your changes in the edit summary. If an edit is too complex to explain in an edit summary, or the change is contentious, add a section to the talk page that explains your rationale. Be prepared to justify your changes to other editors on the talk page. If you are reverted, continue to explain yourself; do not start an edit war.
Allow me to continue to explain myself. All I did was add content with citations, as is common practice and as is instructed above. There was no copyright violation or conflict of interest, other than addressing problematic language that had already been flagged on the talk page. It seems to me that the resolution here is not to revert my edits, but to improve them by adding balancing material.
Remember to assume good faith and not to bite newcomers like me who are just trying to improve these pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.249.153.200 (talk) 22:13, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Look, I am happy to remove the copyright violation, even if they aren't any, if you give me a few minutes. Just to let you know: factual statements are NOT COPYRIGHT protected, hence they can be copied without violating any copyright. In addition, if you BELIEVE there is a violation, please be specific, because there may be a half sentence or two that would may be "creative" and thus protected, but that can usually be fixed by changing a word or two, which is exactly what I willing to. Just reverting a whole page wholesale is just ridiculous. Peteruetz (talk) 21:15, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

I'm going through the same issue with some edits I made yesterday, which DanCherek flagged as "spam" and "copyright violation" even though there was no infringement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.249.153.200 (talk) 21:23, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
DanCherek, sorry to say this, but your zealous actions are a good reason why productive and cooperative people give up to work on Wikipedia out of frustration. I have made many smaller edits to make the ERV page better, in addition to adding a few sentence from a paper, including ORIGINAL citations. In your completely unnecessary zeal you just deleted everything, including one or two sentences that you considered a copyright violation, but no judge in the world ever would.Peteruetz (talk) 21:30, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
If you think there is a persistent issue with my edits, you are welcome to bring it up at a relevant noticeboard. I've raised this specific matter with an administrator who specializes in copyright cleanup and will defer to any decision they make, so I don't really have anything else to note here besides my concern with your misunderstanding of Wikipedia's copyright policy. DanCherek (talk) 21:34, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
Hello Peteruetz. I am Diannaa and I am a Wikipedia administrator. I have reviewed DanCherek's work and agree with him that the text you added is in violation of our copyright policy, because almost all of it is copied from https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11423012/, which is marked as Copyright © 2001 BioMed Central Ltd. Please a stop re-adding it or you risk being blocked from editing. — Diannaa (talk) 23:22, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

In re Edward Mercado

Apologies, but I reverted your removal of the copyrighted material in favour of just tagging the draft for wholesale deletion under WP:G12. The only actual content on the page after your removal was the sentence stating where he was born, and that is it; the remainder is a malformatted sources list. Lider has been told how to properly cite sources via -en-help, but he refuses to do so in favour of plagiarising the PDF. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 19:25, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

Hello: I was flagged several times for a copyright violation for adding information to the biography of New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Weintraub Joseph Weintraub - Wikipedia

The information came from a website maintained by the New Jersey Courts. I work for the New Jersey Courts and have been asked to maintain the Wikipedia pages of our former chief justices, so I used the information from our website and pasted it to Wikipedia.

Please advise

Thank you. Mike Mathis (Redacted) CCRSocialMedia.Mbx (talk) 16:50, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

@CCRSocialMedia.Mbx: Hi Mike, there are a few different issues here. Since you work for the New Jersey Courts, you'll need to provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that usually means disclosing the relationship on your user page. This disclosure is required by the Terms of Use. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest.
The text was proactively removed because the NJ Courts website has a copyright notice at the bottom: "Copyright © 2018 All Rights Reserved by New Jersey Judiciary." Previously published content may be released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Please note that editors with a COI are strongly recommended to use talk pages to propose changes to affected articles. I suggest doing that once you've reviewed the conflict of interest guidelines; you may find the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard helpful. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 16:57, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Dan...The irony here is I'm the person who also maintains and uodates the New Jersey Courts' webpage from which the information was taken lol CCRSocialMedia.Mbx (talk) 17:35, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
That doesn't matter. Unless the original work was released under a licence compatible with Wikipedia's (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 and GNU Free Document Licence) or is already public domain we cannot use it as both of those licences are (1) incompatible with Berne-standard all-rights-reserved copyright and (2) irrevocable once declared. You're far from the first to make this mistake and will be far from the last. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 17:44, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
As an administrator here, I'm just going to confirm that what @Jéské Couriano said is quite correct. Even if you wrote the published text, you're going to have to write it again in a different non-paraphrased form if it is to be accepted here (or get the licence changed to a CC-BY-SA one on the original court page). In addition, we don't want copy/paste jobs here, because a simple external link would exactly the same job. Please ensure you declare your connection and WP:PAID editing status before editing any related pages again. Undeclared paid editing is usually met with users having their editing rights withdrawn. Question from Itsbloggerumair (07:49, 13 July 2022)

Hi, I want to add a business website to Wikipedia. How can I do that? --Itsbloggerumair (talk) 07:49, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

I assume this is about the draft that you created about your blog, Draft:Tech Bloggie. Typically, Wikipedia articles are only created if and only if a topic has received significant coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject. That doesn't appear to be the case for this blog, and so I don't think this is likely to be accepted as an article, unfortunately. DanCherek (talk) 14:08, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Wuling Rongguang

Att DanCherek: You seem to be worried that content is copyrighted by greencarcongress.com. That is impossible. I never saw that webpage until I saw your post so it is not my source. My source is the reference that I put in this paragraph which is a GM press release itself. You might try comparing these 2 sources. You'll notice that greencarcongress.com copied the info from the GM press release. So, there is no copyright issue here whatsoever which is why I put back what you deleted. You might try not jumping to conclusions so quickly without doing your due diligence first. 108.6.237.202 (talk) 21:01, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

You can't copy from press releases either, unless they have been explicitly released by the copyright owner into either the public domain or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. The GM press release seems to be licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0, but non-commercial licenses are not compatible with Wikipedia. DanCherek (talk) 21:06, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
There is nothing in the sentences in question that can be copyrighted because it is just basic factual information which is in the public domain. There is nothing secret or proprietary about it. It is simply stating facts and reporting information. However, I have reworked the wording so it is not word for word copied from the press release and I added some additional information that has come about since the press release was published. I don't believe this was necessary but this revision should cover any remaining concerns. That is, assuming the concerns are truly legitimate and not simply meant to harass other contributors. 108.6.237.202 (talk) 22:04, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
Please don't snarkily imply that I'm out to "harass other contributors". When we talk about things below the threshold of originality, we're talking about things like lists of awards, proper nouns, and bibliographies. It's not okay to copy sentences verbatim and present them as original prose. So, thank you for taking the time to rewrite the content. DanCherek (talk) 22:10, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

2 Articles: 1 and 2

Hello, good evening, sorry to bother you with this subject, but I could notice that both these articles are not complying with some rules, I ask you to read the message I left on the discussion page of a user in the wikipedia in Portuguese ok, because I called him because he who deleted these two articles in the wikipedia in Portuguese several times. ( READ HERE ) for you will understand what I am talking about. Soberano Sauron (talk) 00:02, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Soberano Sauron. Each project sets its own notability guidelines, so whether something is deleted on the Portuguese Wikipedia usually does not affect the corresponding article here at enwiki. That being said, if you don't think the subjects of those articles are notable, you can nominate them for deletion by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, but be sure to refer to the English Wikipedia's notability guidelines. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 00:17, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
So in this way I ask you to analyze these articles and we can come to a decision, and thank you for your attention. :) Soberano Sauron (talk) 00:17, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
As you are more experienced, could you please check, because most of these sources are not reliable and not very verifiable! If you can see these articles I will be grateful for your help.! Greetings and good contributions! Soberano Sauron (talk) 00:22, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
I think you may be on to something. I nominated one for deletion, looking into the other one now. DanCherek (talk) 00:40, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
don't worry, I am not, I am acting in good faith! Soberano Sauron (talk) 00:45, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
for I saw that the articles were deleted from the wiki, several times as you can see yourself (HERE), and suddenly mysteriously appears here in the English wikipedia, I believe that by not being accepted in the Portuguese the same editor is trying to put it here in en.wiki, and being quite honest, these articles seem not to be meeting the criteria of notoriety. But it is up to you, do what is best for everyone, because I don't want to cause confusion or anything like that, this was my opinion about the cited articles. I am sorry if I gave a wrong impression about, and thank you for your help. Soberano Sauron (talk) 00:55, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
Sorry for the misunderstanding here. "I think you may be on to something" means that I think you are correct, I'm not accusing you of anything bad DanCherek (talk) 01:40, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
So now I understand what you wanted to tell me, I read your message and interpreted it wrong, sorry!!! :) - Soberano Sauron (talk) 02:33, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
In this same topic, because I don't want to fill your discussion with too much stuff, could you do one last favor for me? if you can and of course! I noticed that you are a proofreader of new pages, so could you please review the 2 new articles I did? ( this one ) is still in draft awaiting review, if you can review it so it goes to the main space or be rejected I will be grateful, and also has ( this one ) that was published but no editor has reviewed it yet, I took a long time in both articles! thanks again for your attention, greetings and good contributions. :) Soberano Sauron (talk) 02:52, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
I don't typically review drafts or articles upon request, sorry. They're in the queue and someone will get to them eventually. DanCherek (talk) 03:07, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
ok, thanks anyway! :) - Soberano Sauron (talk) 01:05, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Question from HRWIII (00:08, 14 July 2022)

Hello Dan, I want to add some images to a friend's Wikipedia page. Can you tell me if this is possible? Thank you, Harold --HRWIII (talk) 00:08, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi HRWIII! Photos are always appreciated, especially if the article lacks them. Please keep in mind that most images on Wikipedia need to be either in the public domain or released by the copyright holder under a compatibly free license, and that this would mean that anyone will be able to use and modify the image (with attribution), even commercially. If you are the copyright holder of an image and you're okay with that, please see Help:Files for a more detailed guide on uploading and using image files (most likely the image will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and then it can be used here). Let me know if you have any questions! DanCherek (talk) 00:22, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. I successfully uploaded one of my photos that will hopefully be accessible on the relevant wikipedia page. HRWIII (talk) 01:23, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
@HRWIII: I see the image that you've uploaded, and I've added it to the George Greenough article. Thank you! By the way, anyone who wants to edit articles related to friends, family, etc., should read the conflict of interest guidelines – it's not prohibited, but there are some important pointers to keep in mind. Thanks again, DanCherek (talk) 01:29, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I do not believe there is a COI issue. I am a friend of Greenough's but my intention was to correct information about his boats from personal experience. If you see a problem with this please let me know and I will backtrack. Cheers, HRWIII HRWIII (talk) 01:40, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

RIA Pakistan to Ghana?

I really appreciate your attempted WP:RIA advice added to the edit history of Demographics of Ghana in this edit. It's nice to know I'm not the only one paying attention to such things (see here, for example). Otoh, I was a bit confused by your edit summary, which provided an attribution statement for content copied from Demographics of Pakistan; how could this added content containing several decades of Ghanaian vital statistics have come from an article about Pakistan? Am I missing something? (As a sidebar, you may have received a reversion notification about a subsequent edit of mine; this edit was directed at the addition of numeric data to the table which was unsourced, and had nothing to do with your edit, which was collateral damage; but since the whole point was the RIA in the summary history, I didn't think the undo of the dummy edit itself actually mattered one way or the other; nevertheless, my apologies for the undo notif, which has nothing to do with your edit.) Thanks again for worrying about copyright and copy attribution, and carry on! Mathglot (talk) 00:45, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Mathglot, thanks for the message! That was simply attribution for the sentences In July 2022, the United Nations published its 2022 World Population Prospects, a biennially-updated database where key demographic indicators are estimated and projected worldwide down to the country level. They prepared the following estimates of demographic indicators in Ghana for every year from 1950 to 2021, as well as projections for future decades. which were definitely derived from the Pakistan article. Not the biggest deal, but enough to get flagged at CopyPatrol (which is where I noticed and dealt with it). Hope that makes sense! DanCherek (talk) 01:23, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Ah, so not the data included in the large edit of 13 July which was mentioned in your RIA, but rather the intro sentence about the UN publishing a 2022 database; got it. In that case, I think the RIA statement as given actually does not work in the way intended; because the unattributed edit in fact contained about 7kb of numeric demographic data about Ghana (with, by the way and not relevant to the RIA issue, a source that did not, in fact, support that data—hence my later revert). However, by adding an unqualified RIA, you appeared to be implying that Pakistan article editors were responsible for the numeric content that made up 90% of the content of that edit, rather than merely the sentence or two about the UN publishing its database. I think that doesn't conform to the spirit of copyright or RIA; I probably would have been much more explicit, something like: "RIA notice: The previous edit of 18:27, 13 July 2022 copied material taken in part from Demographics of Pakistan, from "In July 2022..." to "... for future decades." See that article's history for attribution." (It fits; I checked.) In fact, I had assumed that your RIA was targeting the numeric data about Ghana, which is what confused me. Hth, Mathglot (talk) 01:44, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Fair point. DanCherek (talk) 01:47, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Check out what this url does; this works for most browsers, and you can't beat it for specificity. (It wasn't by accident that I included the same delimiters in the more vanilla version above.) Of course, this kind of highlighting is useful in all sorts of contexts; for example, on Talk pages, instead of talk quote-ing your own or someone else's previous comment. Question from Sping World

How would I Write an article about my business? Sping World (talk) 16:53, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

To be honest, that kind of thing isn't really recommended here because it's difficult to write neutrally and verifiably about such topics. It seems like your previous attempts to write about yourself have already been deleted multiple times for unambiguous advertising, so please note that Wikipedia is not an avenue for promotion. I would encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. DanCherek (talk) 17:19, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Question from Xavier Serif (13:27, 16 July 2022)

Good day to you Sir.

Please assist me in creating a Wikipedia page.

Appreciatively, Xavier Serif --Xavier Serif (talk) 13:28, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Xavier Serif! Please see Help:Your first article for a detailed guide on creating your first article. The first thing I do when I want to create a new article is to determine whether the article topic is notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. Make sure to summarize information in your own words, rather than copying content from other websites. Writing an article from scratch can be tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance. DanCherek (talk) 13:29, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Question from Xavier Serif on Bolivian Americans (14:15, 16 July 2022)

Rommel Villa is an Oscar winner in the short film category… he is a rising Movie and television producer, director and screen writer… why should he not be added to list of prominent Bolivian Americans? --Xavier Serif (talk) 14:15, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

"Notable people" sections in articles are typically meant for people who already have existing Wikipedia articles (there are some exceptions). Red-linked or unlinked entries are often routinely removed from these types of lists. As an additional note, the Student Academy Awards do not confer the same level of notability as the actual Academy Awards. DanCherek (talk) 14:20, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Ana-Maria Vera

she already has a German wikipedia page. Why is her name in red on the English wikipedia page? Xavier Serif (talk) 14:20, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Xavier Serif, it's because she doesn't have an article on the English Wikipedia. The Interlanguage link template can be used to indicate that the article exists on another project. DanCherek (talk) 14:22, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Wildlife Conservation Network

Hi Dan, I was wondering if you might be able to tell me why you took down a lot of the content I added to the Wildlife Conservation Network article? There’s been a lot of changes at WCN in the past few years and I was trying to update it with more relevant information. 2600:1700:AF20:C970:E5B4:E35E:93EB:AD50 (talk) 02:15, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi! Some of the text I removed was copied from https://wildnet.org/celebrating-20-years-of-protecting-wildlife/. Wikipedia's copyright policy doesn't allow that because the text is protected by copyright, according to the terms of that website. In the future, please summarize information from sources in your own words. I removed some other text because it was not supported by any citations to reliable sources, which should ideally be the foundation of every article. See Wikipedia:Reliable sources for more information. Most of the content that you added is still available in the page history, but it shouldn't be restored without proper sourcing. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 02:33, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Dan, I’m not so sure that I would say it’s plagiarized in any lengthy way. A lot of that info is info that’s just summarized from the website. 2600:1700:AF20:C970:8D46:106C:70E7:97D3 (talk) 00:03, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

The text that I removed included multiple sentences that were copied verbatim from the website without any significant attempts at paraphrasing. That's not allowed. DanCherek (talk) 00:06, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Copyrights on Draft:The Houston Tidelanders

I've added "connected contributor" to the article as I'm the website administrator for the Houston Tidelanders. One reason I created this Wikipedia page is that I want to see the history of the Tidelanders preserved in more than one location. There are pieces of information on the Wikipedia page that aren't on the website and I did my best to condense, paraphrase, or present information differently. We own the copyright to the history listed on the website. I expect the differences to grow when our official historian has time to edit and add to the page. I can assure you that the information contained is historically accurate as far as I know as condensed from of our original historical documents. W.H. Anderson's observations is a direct quote from what I understand (I changed it to a quote".

The history of the BHS (aka SPEBSQSA) that I listed is a conglomeration of facts from multiple sources (the Tidelanders, the BHS, and another website that I found a tidbit of history from) but it's very condensed. From what I understand it's historically accurate but not nearly as detailed as as the history noted on the BHS website. Steve sings bass (talk) 01:22, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Steve, welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for disclosing your connection with the group. The material was preemptively removed due to the copyright notice on the website, but check out Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on how to release material under a compatible license (note that doing so would allow anyone to share, distribute, transmit, and adapt your work, even commercially). However, I will also point out that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and so basing most of an article on an group's website is generally not appropriate either and makes it harder to establish the topic's notability. Copyright: Drum

I am disappointed at what I consider the rather aggressive way you have handled this. The website I used as a source was evidently set up originally in part to encourage tourism and the contribution it could make to the local economy, and I carried out extensive edits to remove the florid elements and change the tone to a much simpler and more encyclopedic style. It seems to me that the result was not in violation of copyright rules, but this is naturally a matter of opinion.

I do not, of course, dispute the right of reviewers to police copyright rules, but I would like to see a more consensual approach. I can see that where there are flagrant issues such as potentially libellous statements about living persons then immediate action is needed, but in a case like this I think it would be more appropriate, rather than immediately to mutilate the work that contributors have done, to raise your issues with them and listen to their point of view. There are further background issues in this case, such as the fact that the original webpage was archived, and that its authorship was clearly by a voluntary community organisation concerned to encourage tourism, an objective which would only be advanced by the inclusion of further details on Wikipedia. I might mention that I have no personal connection or interest with the community involved; I simply stumbled across the article by accident and felt that the original authors had missed an obvious trick.

However, now that you have destroyed the work I did I am not going to waste time trying to make additional drafting changes to meet your objections. The community involved will have to make do without this little advertisement. Deipnosophista (talk) 11:04, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

Sorry to hear that you feel that way. In some cases I rewrite the infringing material; in others I leave it up to the original contributor. The archiving of the source web page and that it was written by volunteers doesn't really affect the obligation to sufficiently paraphrase the material for Wikipedia, because we assert that anyone can share, distribute, transmit, and adapt the content we add to Wikipedia, even commercially. That's not something that the copyright holders have agreed to for the content that they've produced. I disagree that the removal of copyright violations from articles constitutes "mutilation". Question from Bhandarikushal (13:04, 31 July 2022)

Hello, I Joined wikipiedia because I want to make a page for a charity group I am involved with. I actually have no idea about the process on making a page. --Bhandarikushal (talk) 13:04, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi Bhandarikushal! You can read WP:YFA for a detailed guide on how to create your first article. It will take you through the steps to create a draft that can be submitted for review. Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. Since you have a connection with the subject of your draft, you will need to provide a required disclosure – see the conflict of interest guideline for more information about that.
Writing an article from scratch can be really tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would actually encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance! DanCherek (talk) 15:06, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi DanCherek! I've seen how helpful you been in the past with copyright issues so I thought I would ask to see if you could help me how to address possible copyright issues on article Seán Scanlan, as copyright issues on Wikipedia are not my forte. I was patrolling recent changes and I noticed that there was a large amount of information removed in the edit here: [1]. When I was looking for sources to see if I could re-add any information with a refence, I noticed the article was very similar to this source[2], which Earwig's tool seems to confirm: [3]. I proceeded to rewrite some of the article and wanted to see if you could take a look at it and make sure my rewrite meets guidelines and then also advice on how address this possible copyright issue. Thanks for any help and advice! Wikipedialuva (talk) 03:12, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Wikipedialuva, hope you're doing well and thanks for the message! Good catch – the removed text, which has been present since the article was created in 2012, seems to have been lifted directly from the EUMWA source. Your rewrite looks pretty good; the remaining Earwig overlap was mostly proper nouns (like names of institutions), but I did a little more rewriting just in case. Since it has been removed, I think we're good to go here. I noted the copyvio removal in an edit summary as well as on the talk page (Talk:Seán Scanlan#Copyright problem removed) so that it will hopefully stay out of the article in the future. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 03:35, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Question from Nourah.Alkhaldi79 (22:23, 2 August 2022)

Hello! Dan Cherek Exactly, I want to learn the correct way to upload audio files and images and the correct way to work within the wiki community. --Nourah.Alkhaldi79 (talk) 22:23, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Nourah.Alkhaldi79, welcome to Wikipedia! Audio and images are always appreciated, especially if the article lacks them. One important thing to keep in mind that most images or other files on Wikipedia need to be either in the public domain or released by the copyright holder under a compatibly free license, and that this would mean that anyone will be able to use and modify the image (with attribution), even commercially. If you are the copyright holder of an image or file and you're okay with that, please see Help:Files for a more detailed guide on uploading and using image files (most likely the image will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and then it can be used here).
In other cases, if the image you wish to upload is not under a free license, but meets all of Wikipedia's fair use criteria, then it can be uploaded directly to the English Wikipedia (not Wikimedia Commons) with a fair use rationale. This can apply to things like book or album covers, movie posters, etc. But, please note that you will only be able to locally upload a non-free file on your own after you are autoconfirmed, which happens after you've been registered for four days and have made at least 10 edits.
Hope this helps, and I'm also going to post a message on your talk page with some additional links about Wikipedia that you may find useful! DanCherek (talk) 22:29, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

Question from Emstuandsoforth (10:39, 3 August 2022)

I want my page to be called ANDSOFORTH how do I change that? --Emstuandsoforth (talk) 10:39, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Emstuandsoforth and welcome to Wikipedia. There are a couple concerns here:
  1. You appear to be writing about your own company. That is an example of a conflict of interest (COI) editing and you will need to provide a required disclosure about your connection to the company before proceeding further. There's already a message on your talk page detailing how to do that and the community expectations that come with a COI.
  2. Your username seems to imply shared use of the account ("Em Stu AndSoForth"). Wikipedia's username policy disallows usernames that imply shared access, because usernames should not be shared between more than one individual. I would suggest visiting Special:GlobalRenameRequest to request a new username that avoids this issue.
Though the two concerns above take precedence, I will briefly point out that in accordance with the naming conventions for article titles, we usually don't put titles in all-caps for stylization. So if your draft was an article, it would probably be titled "Andsoforth" or "AndSoForth". DanCherek (talk) 11:48, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Feedback requested

Hi Dan! A couple days ago, I started working on CopyPatrol after becoming aware of it through your RfA (which I am glad to see is going swimmingly), and I wanted to ask for your feedback on this case which I handled. I removed the copyright-violating text and instructed the editor that material must be presented in one's own words; the copyvio has since been revdel'd by an admin. The editor presented a re-phrased version of the material in question: the abstract of the journal which is the subject of the article. While I personally was satisfied with the re-wording, part of me is wondering if it still falls afoul of close paraphrasing due to the structural similarity between the article section as it currently stands, and the abstract. Do you think anything more needs to be done? Dylan620 (he/him · talk · edits) 14:13, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your help, Dylan620! I agree with you, the rewritten text is still a little similar to the source. In addition, there was some awkward wording ("Of particular interest are investigations that investigate") and some sentences that didn't actually really mean anything when you read them more closely. Based on that, I rewrote it some more and trimmed a bit; let me know what you think. The editor's username also suggests that they have a significant conflict of interest with respect to the journal, so I've left a note on their talk page about that. DanCherek (talk) 16:26, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
That makes perfect sense to me, and your rewrite is a considerable improvement. Thank you so much! Dylan620 (he/him · talk · edits) 17:08, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello DanCherek,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Hi Bigmanhelperhouseman! It would be great if you could add one or more reliable sources that support the statements about the Saturn-Shuttle's performance. This might be something like a newspaper article, a scholarly publication or book chapter, etc. Unfortunately, because the nasa.fandom.com is also a wiki and anyone can write whatever they want there, we can't really consider it a reliable source of information. Three minutes! That's impressive. :P firefly ( t · c ) 10:46, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks all! Tamzin, I like that the kinehore image has become the one you see when you hover over the RfA with navigation popups, like it's being cast over everything. Maybe we should propose standardizing that for every RfA at the next round of reforms? DanCherek (talk) 13:16, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
It seems unlikely more than seventy opposes will be made in the next three hours. You handled this RfA well. Welcome to the jungle, and congratulations for the community recognizing your trustworthiness. BusterD (talk) 16:11, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Question from CheyenneDeBolt (16:10, 9 August 2022)

Hello, I am finishing up with a draft I am creating and I would like to change the name of the draft. Is that something that I can do? --CheyenneDeBolt (talk) 16:10, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi CheyenneDeBolt! I assume this is about Draft:Shelem. Are you trying to change the name of the draft but keep it in draftspace? DanCherek (talk) 16:15, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
I've actually submitted it. Since there is another Shelem page, I would like to be able to specify that this this page is about Shelem (rapper) vs. Shelem (card game). CheyenneDeBolt (talk) 16:17, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Cool, that makes sense. This is called "moving" a page and you can do it by following the steps at Help:How to move a page and adding (rapper) to the end of the text field. Try it out and let me know if you run into any issues! DanCherek (talk) 16:20, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! CheyenneDeBolt (talk) 16:34, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Question from CheyenneDeBolt (17:41, 9 August 2022)

Hello, could you help me understand why my sources on the Shelem page don't meet reliability requirements? Most are news articles or links to his music repertoire. He is the subject of all the articles used. Would you mind looking over page for Shelem and help me understand how to improve? --CheyenneDeBolt (talk) 17:41, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Of the 14 unique citations in that draft, 3 of them gave me a "Sorry, the page you're looking for cannot be found" message so I was unable to evaluate those. 7 are just links to his music (like Apple Music), and those don't contribute to the case for notability at all because the sources aren't independent and they don't contain significant coverage of Shelem. Of the remaining citations, the NPR one is better, but the TED talk video, his TEDx bio, and the local news interview again don't really constitute significant coverage in reliable and independent sources. Welcome to admin-corps

I was the first one to comment on your RfA, and I thought it would be nice to be the last supporter. But I was 20 minutes late. Anyways, welcome to the admin-corps.

If you have any questions or doubts, please feel to ask me, or any admins. Most of the admins are very co-operative, and helpful, not all of them though. The only thing currently confuses me is hist-merge. See you around :-) —usernamekiran (talk) 19:02, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, I appreciate it! So how does one perform a histmerge again? Just kidding... DanCherek (talk) 19:14, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Congrats, and the advice

Congratulations on your successful RFA!
Carrying on a tradition, allow me to impart the words of wisdom I received from Katie after my RFA passed almost seven long, exhausting, and questionable years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology. It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Copy Patrol

Hello @DanCherek, Good day Congrats you're an admin now. I'm glad you assist me previously twice. I want to take up new role and replace you. Would you mind guiding me with the copy patrol tool. I have slight low experience with copyright violation and revdel. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 04:51, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your interest. I have some concerns, though, about relatively recent copyright issues (like the CCI) and the fact that we seemed to have some difficulty communicating in this conversation. (I am still not sure whether you were saying you copied those episode summaries or not.) For those reasons I recommend spending some time getting experience in other areas of Wikipedia before working in copyright cleanup, which can be tricky to navigate. DanCherek (talk) 12:21, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
@DanCherek Yeah I agree with you. But I have learnt from my mistake and I'm grateful to Moneytrees for giving me a chance. But I have dealt with some revdel here. Also, I believe I'm quick learner, and I'm competent to handle copyright query in more sensible way. Please assist me atleast, if I feel is it's not my cup of tea, then I will not focus in these area. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 12:36, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
I appreciate the enthusiasm, but I do not feel comfortable committing to this at this time due to the concerns noted above – particularly our confusing conversation on your talk page where you seemed to suggest that one instance of demonstrated copying was reverse copyvio, and proposed presumptive removal of text from another article (that was later found to not have any issues). Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 13:55, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Dear Dan Cherek, I am creating a bio page and I saw that you deleted it. Why? The bot said that it was deleted because it references Amazon when that company is not included in the article. Bottom line how much do I have to pay for this free service? Thank you. Kyle Kyle Langdon-Weyrich (talk) 17:42, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Kyle, your page was deleted because it contained promotional text copied verbatim from [4]. Just because you haven't cited something as a source doesn't mean you can copy from it freely – it's still a violation of our copyright policy because the text hasn't been released under a compatibly free license. It looks like you are looking to advertise yourself, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged — see our guideline on autobiographies. This is because it is difficult to write a neutral, verifiable autobiography, and there are many pitfalls. And please don't pay anyone for Wikipedia editing, that's an easy way to get scammed and isn't going to get you what you want. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 17:51, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

  • Congratulations, Dan! Great to have you on board with tools at your disposal. My only advice is to NEVER be reluctant to ask another admin for their opinion on decisions you are uncertain about. I became an admin in 2015 and there are admins I still go to on subjects I'm less well-versed on, like templates and files. Whatever the area of admining, there are probably half a dozen admins who work on that area on a regular basis and it's often best to run a situation by them, mention how you plan on handling the situation and ask them what they think. In general, I think I'm a cautious admin but it never hurts to ask the pros for advice. It's how you learn and become a better admin. Good luck! Liz Read! Talk! 23:36, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the advice, Liz! I definitely agree that it's better to start slow and learn as I go. Hope to see you around! DanCherek (talk) 23:49, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Neil Douglas

That PDF clearly indicates that they took the text from the Scotsman article, so that's what I decided to attribute. Even if it did originate from the High School of Dundee, it's not okay to copy-paste from other websites to Wikipedia. Feel free to summarize the information in your own words. A baton for you!

A baton for you!
Congratulations on a successful RfA. Between you, Firefly, and myself, now all three records tracked at RFX200 and RFX300—highest unopposed, unanimous, and raw support—are held by 2022 RfAs, which is quite something given that there have only been 5 successful RfAs this year!

Stats geekery aside, I know you'll be an amazing admin. I'm sure you'll have access to counsel from admins much more experienced than me, but do know that I'm around. :)

As you take my place as the juniormost admin, I thought I'd recognize that in some way by passing this baton on to you. Maybe when the next successful RfA occurs (which may be sometime soon, but  Kinehore), you can pass it along. (The image for this isn't ideal, but as far as stylized running-baton images go, it was this or some naked dudes.)

*Grumbles that Tamzin has overlooked that Sdrqaz's RfA was the only successful one this year without a question on recall, which is the most important metric of all – maybe because it was Just Right?*
I'm pleased to see that you've begun your adminship with a revision deletion – I hear that it is the most auspicious way to start it all off. All in all, congratulations! Even if it does come ten months later than I'd like and I didn't get to ask a question about large-scale revision deletion ... All the best on this new journey, Sdrqaz (talk) 02:59, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
@Sdrqaz: I believe you have the record for least-opposed RfA for someone who doesn't take binary pronouns. (Trivia, not social commentary! I don't think (almost) anyone opposes on pronouns; the correlation is either coincidence or an indirect causation.) I think you might also have the username with the highest Scrabble score per character for any RfA candidate... at the very least you're in the bottom sixth for voweliness. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 04:16, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Hmm, should we create Category:Wikipedia administrators who may or may not be open to recall? Thanks for the well wishes! DanCherek (talk) 11:58, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
No, because it would fail WP:USERCAT for utterly lacking collaborative function and being a joke/nonsense category. But I'm pretty sure you knew that and were joking, in which case carry on ... * Pppery * it has begun... 02:52, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Sameer Wankhede

I am not getting why you deleted it. The AfD was more than 1 year ago and most of the participants who voted for "Delete" wrongly predicted that the subject won't get any coverage after the controversy that was going on at the time. All of this has been proven wrong and the subject is still getting coverage.[5][6] It is not even uncommon to re-create the article once the subject has gained more notability. A similar example would be this article which was created less than 2 months after the AfD[7] because the subject was more notable now.

It will absolutely end up being kept if an AfD is ever initiated. You should restore the article and its talk page. --Yoonadue (talk) 04:18, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

It looks like you copied and pasted 90% of the article from the deleted version, which breaks our attribution requirements for the dozens of editors who contributed to the article before the AfD. Whenever you are looking to restore the old version of an article deleted at AfD before expansion, WP:DRV is the correct venue. DanCherek (talk) 12:34, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Question from CheyenneDeBolt (16:31, 15 August 2022)

Hello, I'd like some help with referencing. I am using some of my sources in multiple parts of my article. How do I use the same source in various locations without creating a new "reference" in the list? ie if I want to use reference [1] first then use it after references [2,3,4] but don't want it to show as [5]. --CheyenneDeBolt (talk) 16:31, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

@CheyenneDeBolt ((talk page watcher) comment) When you add a reference, you can give it a name. For example, The next time you want to cite the same source, you just call the ref's name, like this: Note the closing slash. Cascade de Soulou

Hey DanCherek. First off, congratulations on your successful RFA.

You declined my histmerge request on Cascade de Soulou with the reasoning of "a histmerge is not needed here as the content in both pages was added by the same editor, so there are no attribution issues that need to be repaired". The creation of the main article is currently attributed to me when it should be attributed to the other editor. I'm only listed as the creator because I draftified the original article, which left behind a redirect with a G2 CSD tag, and they pasted the content before the CSD could be reviewed. I'm new to requesting histmerge, so I won't be at all surprised if I'm wrong, but isn't this part of the reason that histmerges are done? Hey man im josh (talk) 22:40, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Hey man im josh, thanks for the message! It's not really a big deal that you are technically listed as the "page creator" (you might accidentally get templated if someone uses Twinkle to nominate the page for deletion, but that's okay). The important part is that anyone looking at the page history – and this diff specifically – can tell that Glordimes, the original contributor, added the content that is currently in the article. That's what I meant by "no attribution issues".
The following is an example where a histmerge would be needed: Glordimes creates the page, you draftify it, then I come along and paste the draft contents over the redirect. In that case, it would look like I was the one who wrote that text, which isn't okay. Hope that makes sense – let me know if you have any questions! DanCherek (talk) 22:49, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
Just when I thought I was starting to understand histmerge. A similar merge happened earlier today with the same user at Draft:Poaching in Mayotte, though I understand that merge may have taken place because an admin may have also believed the page should be in a draft, whereas Cascade de Soulou is technically in better shape. Since the main article will stand, can I nominate Draft:Cascade de Soulou using the G7 CSD tag? Hey man im josh (talk) 23:10, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
There are different approaches to history merges, for sure. And if it's an ambiguous situation, it's good to tag the page so an administrator can evaluate it and decide whether it's necessary. I learned a lot about when to request one from Primefac's comments at the AfC talk page, where the topic of histmerges regularly comes up – for example, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation#Another Specific Question. Regarding Draft:Cascade de Soulou: it's very close to a page blanking, so a CSD G7 would probably have been fine, but I've opted to simply redirect it to the mainspace article as redirects are cheap and this keeps the page history visible to non-admins. Another situation where reasonable minds may differ DanCherek (talk) 23:22, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll try to swing by that page more often to do some reading. Hey man im josh (talk) 00:07, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Article revertion on Sindhis

Hello, i was wondering why my edit was removed? it included other sourced information apart from the encyclopedia one.
NameIsShaheer (talk) 20:39, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

I reverted because in your sizable addition to Sindhis, there was only a single sentence that wasn't copied from the Encyclopedia.com source. Here is that sentence, for your reference: another ones are the famous love story of Sassi and Punnu whose love became a tale for many to remember.[1] The rest was copied from [8].
