Hitchcock films
I'd agree with the statement of 70 years after death for his UK works, but for his 1940 and onward US works, there are various ways to get PD images. I see there are quite a few film trailers with screenshots in his article. Many times the film trailers were sent out to publicize the film without copyright notices in them. Those without notices can be used as PD screenshots, but you'll need to view the trailers either at IMDB or TCM to make sure there's no copyright notice in them. Recently we had some Bogart-Bacall trailers with screenshots at Commons where the copy of the trailer (at Internet Archive) had no copyright notice. Both IMDB and TCM copies did and of course, the screenshots had to go.
If the trailer has a notice, you can check UPenn for motion picture renewals. The years 27 and 28 after production need to be looked at because sometimes people renewed things early. Then there's copyright.gov to check for renewals which may have taken place from 1977 on.
Another way around is to look for material related to the film such as posters, lobby cards and marked and dated stills which don't have copyright notices on them. There are plenty of stills on eBay and other places on the internet but far too many have no dating or information about who produced the image. Quite a few of the film companies started copyright marking their posters in the 1930s but some didn't do the same for lobby cards until the 1940s. If you can get hold of lobby cards with no copyright marks, most of them contain at least one good still. The still can be edited from the card and greyscaled if necessary. This is the unmarked lobby card and this is the still that came out of it. When a film is still under copyright, this is a way to get PD stills. ;)
Yet another way to get photos is to search a place like Lantern because many of their old film magazines carry photos which can be used because the copyrights to the magazines weren't renewed. Many of the scans come from the US Copyright Office--they're scans of the copies of the magazines and books which were submitted at the time of original copyright. At times, you're able to match a better quality still to the photo in the magazine or book. Another is to find photos in ads for the films which don't have copyright notices. This came from a non-copyrighted ad for Grand Hotel; a larger and better quality copy of the photo was used. I hope this has helped and that if you have more questions, you'll let me know; I'll be glad to help in any way I can. :) We hope (talk) 00:25, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Removal of 1A0C external weblink on Sovereign Order of Malta page
Howdy,
Nice to meet you & a Happy New Year.
Would you care to expand on how you came to the view that the addition of an external weblink re 1A0C to the page https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Sovereign_Military_Order_of_Malta page "did not appear constructive"?
A little bit of background behind my decision to include the link; there are about 3 million radio amateurs Worldwide (a significant global audience). One very popular activity amongst this global community is two way communication with amateur radio stations located in different "countries" (the definition of a qualifying "country" for this purpose can be seen at http://www.arrl.org/dxcc-rules). Under these criteria, the Sovereign Order of Malta is in fact considered a country; furthermore, it is a "rare" country i.e. one that is difficult to achieve a confirmed two way contact with. 1A0C that operates from the Sovereign Order of Malta location in Rome is pretty much the only station that operates from there and therefore is of significant interest to the community of 3 million radio amateurs around the World, many of whom would search on Wikipedia using the term "Sovereign Order of Malta"...
You might consider the inclusion of this link as a bit too "specialised" or "niche" perhaps? Well, part of what makes an enclycopedia useful, interesting and inclusive is in expanding our knowledge and horizons in this case that there are activities going on in the global community (i.e. amateur radio in this case) that are not "mainstream" but nonetheless just as worthy of exposure and consideration. In my view, the inlcusion of the 1A0C link added to the richness of the Sovereign Order of Malta page, contributed to all the aforementioned goals and I believe conformed to Wikipedia's Policies and Guidelines.
I am of course happy to be corrected & look forward to your perspective
Ei4hq (talk) 09:54, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Ei4hq: I think you're probably right. Just want to check one thing before I revert my edits. Is the radio station affliated with the order? Cowlibob (talk) 22:53, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Cowlibob:
1A0C is the "The Order of Malta’s Italian Relief Corps (CISOM) Amateur Radio Station". The Order of Malta is one of the Sovereign Order of Malta's "worldwide relief corps" as described on the Sovereign Order of Malta wikipedia entry. I would therefore be satisfied the station is directly affiliated with the order as the Sovereign Order of Malta is the parent/umbrella body of the Order of Malta's Italian Relief Corps. The Order of Malta Italian Relief Corps does not have a separate Wikipedia entry, indeed a wikipedia search using the term "Order of Malta" redtirects to the Sovereign Order of Malta entry.

Hi Cowlibob! First of all thank you for your amazing review on FLC of Vidya's accolades. Could you review this one too, if you have time of course. Looking forward to your reply.--FrankBoy (Buzz) 22:33, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi, any chance you or Caponer or somebody could give this a review at FAC? It badly needs reviewers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:44, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Dr. Blofeld: I'm going to have decline that unfortunately, I've got too much right now to do on wiki and more importantly off wiki. Cowlibob (talk) 12:17, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- I'll remember that next time you take something to FLC that you're busy. Not sure how you can do all the work you do on here with featured lists and be so busy! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:47, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Dr. Blofeld: Perhaps I should have worded that better. Your request has come at an unfortunate time as I'm completely winding down my time on wiki with the last project being the Julia Roberts filmography which I finished yesterday. I'll understand if you don't take part in any of my FLCs in the future. The SRK nom has still got a good chance, two supports. SNUGGUMS' points are easy to rectify. If you chase the first reviewer Dwaiyapanc that could make four and then you have three of the best FAC reviewers already involved in some way. Apologies that I couldn't help you in this endeavour but wish you well. Cowlibob (talk) 13:24, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- I don't mind reviewing for people such as yourself, but I do think that if you expect others to review your own work on a regular basis that occasionally it's good to return the favour. Perhaps only lists interest you. Can't be helped if you're busy though. I'm sure not many people really love reviewing articles. I could have sworn I saw your comments recently on something else though, was it Krimuk's one, can't remember!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:30, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Awards table dispute
HI there,
There has been a dispute regarding the two column format for tables in awards articles. We would appreciate your input on how to resolve this issue. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Accessibility#Awards_arranged_in_two_columns_using_tables_for_layout for details. Thanks
Thanks for the new hook. It is better than the original one. I had thought that the Hearst one will bring more clicks to the article but your hook is much better. One minor suggestion, when using Google Book sources, keep the URL short. When I click this link Google tells me that the page 153 isn't part of the preview. But if I use this URL I can view the content of the page. Just remove everything after the page no. You can also use http://reftag.appspot.com. This time-saving tool helps in creating full citations for Google Book links. It will automatically add info such as year, author, ISBN, publisher and page no. It isn't very useful for snippets. You will have to input the page no. yourself. Thanks.--Skr15081997 (talk) 11:01, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Skr15081997: Thanks for that link. Will make citing eBooks much easier. I've slightly changed the hook again " first book based on the life of" to simply biography as I think most people will know what a biography is. Cowlibob (talk) 13:54, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help on the nomination page. I have expanded the lead of Arshad Warsi filmography. Can you take a look at it and tell me if it is good enough or not? Deepak Tijori, an article I have made major improvements to has been nominated at GAN. Abhishek Bachchan filmography has been nominated by another editor for FLC. I think you can give useful suggestions on that nom page. Thanks.--Skr15081997 (talk) 14:31, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Skr15081997: I've copyedited the lead + added a missing entry. I removed the Circuit link as it just redirects to Munna Bhai the character. Find a source for his appearance as a dancer in the 1989 film. I've also added a few more cites needed in that lead. I would before you submit it for FLC, do a check through the refs to ensure that they support he starred in each film, the role he played, director, any awards he won. The refs should also be RS and should avoid self-published primary sources if a suitable secondary is available. Also ensure that the films are in order of film release dates in the filmography. Best wishes. Cowlibob (talk) 16:12, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

67th Academy Awards/Maintaining objectivity
Hello again,
I'm trying to explain to Nergaal that "critics opinion regarding of Pulp Fiction or Shawshank being snubbed" is not notable enough to be included for the 67th Academy Awards regarding featured list promotion. There was a similar issue regarding the 86th Oscars in light of Fruitvale Station and Blackfish being snubbed. However, it was removed ny JDDJS because it was deemed as being biased toward the films. Can you explain to Nergaal that I'm not including the critics view of the snub because that would violate neutraility guidelines?
- Shouldn't neutrality guidelines mean "We are neutral, we represent everybody's opinion in a proportionate matter"? Not including one side of the opinions is actually against "us" being neutral, but more towards "history is written by the victors". Nergaal (talk) 01:13, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

- @Jim Carter: Thanks for the barnstar! Be patient. FLCs can take more time (the first one I worked on took 6 weeks to be promoted). You've notified a few people now, so I would lay off a bit and see what people think thus far as people really don't appreciate it if you just message loads of people as they can perceive it as "spamming". On 25 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Julia Roberts filmography, which you recently created or substantially expanded. - @Birdienest81: Thanks for the support, it got promoted today! I'll look at your list tomorrow. From first glance looks like it needs little work. Just make sure that the refs support the viewing figures and any other info on the page. Be neutral in your language used in the reviews section such as "bemoaned", "derided". 2005 Oscars
I added sources regarding presenters and performers for the 2005 Oscars.
How should the performers table be formatted
I've initiated a discussion at Talk:86th Academy Awards of how the performers table should be formatted because Atomic Meltdown and I were in a dispute resulting in warnings about being blocked. I think there should be consensus, and since you are an expert on film articles, I would like your feedback, please. I understand that you are busy, but if you do have a little time, it would help.
I have opened the peer review for the film. Please do suggest any changes that I should make before I go for FAC. — Ssven2 speak 2 me 04:01, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Unknown User 81.105.122.194
Hi there, An unknown user with the IP number 81.105.122.194 keeps changing the multiple awards and nominations tables at Academy Award for Best Actor. And this list was formatted for Featured List reasons. Can you please tell him to stop?
- Also can you close Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/77th Academy Awards/archive1 and put the featured list star?

I'd be willing to help on it but not until my exams are over in 4 weeks time so if you're finished before then don't worry I'll just comment at the subsequent FLC when I get back. Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for helpfulness in FLC process. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project) |
User:Jim Carter submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
- As most people might be aware (at least those who have noticed), I generally nominate those unsung heroes who should be admins. Most of the editor's I have nominated for EotW are now admins. Cowlibob, should be next. I have recently found this editor helping out at FLC. He has about 8K edits, an amazing 13 Featured Lists! And many DYKs. While he has 8K edits but he is here for more that 5 years now. The most amazing thing about this user: Most reviewers at FLC, points out issues in the nomination page for the nominator to fix them. But this particular reviewer instead of pointing the nominator about the issues, goes ahead and fix those issues himself. He is extremely kind towards new editors and helped many newbies to get their article to FL standard. I'm honored to nominate him for EotW. He deserves this award.

I see that you are busy with exams, but once you are done with them, could you look over 63rd Academy Awards regarding featured list status? I would appreciate the help.
- No need to rush, I already have several supports for the list to be promoted. However, if you could, please explain to Nergaal that the ceremony lists pertainly only about the ceremony as a whole, and that definitions of individual awards (including the honorary awards) are more appropriate for the respective articles for each category?

The article includes a statement, "The film was included in a poll conducted by CNN-IBN to determine "the most popular romantic film of all time". Is it worth keeping, or should it be removed like all the other polls you removed? Kailash29792 (talk) 10:50, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- I think that's ok to keep as that's simply stating that CNN-IBN included it in a poll so it was directly selected by them. Of course the result of the poll shouldn't be included. Cowlibob (talk) 10:56, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Her surname
Thanks for the help! Yep it reads odd in the source. I would have thought it would say "coincidentally" but it doesn't. Can you see the source? Victuallers (talk) 14:23, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Victuallers: Yes. I'm reading it now. I think it was simply that she went from Ms. Charlotte Richardson to Mrs. Charlotte Richardson so she never changed her name as such. Going to try to add some additional info from the source as well. Interesting story, thanks for writing the article. Cowlibob (talk) 14:31, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Why was I notified? I didn't nominate either list, nor have I ever contributed to the pages. The users you want to notify are Spellcast (Kanye West) and Agüeybaná (U2). -- Scorpion0422 19:12, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

Filmography tables
Hey, question, per the edit on Morgan Freeman's tables and the thing you said in the peer review that title had to be first then year, where are you getting that? Because the two tables in WP:FILMOGRAPHY are both ways, Title then Year and Year then Title. Just curious :) LADY LOTUS • TALK 12:57, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- I've been going by the first table as it's accessible with rowscopes and rowcols. I think nearly every FL follows this format. I really don't know why the second table exists. Cowlibob (talk) 13:04, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- Probably just to show it can be both ways, I dunno. I'm flexible either way ;) LADY LOTUS • TALK 13:09, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
DYK
What is your issue with the dyk? If you can wait for few days, then it would be much better. I will fix all the issues with the article, expand prose and re-arrange in the respective awrds column.—Prashant 19:24, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Prashant!: Have pointed out issues on DYK. There's no rush. DYK can take weeks to be approved so you've got plenty of time to rework the article. The icon I added next to comments simply states there are issues not that the DYK has been rejected. Cowlibob (talk) 19:53, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

- Would you like to tell if this meets DYK criteria? I have expanded it a bit, how much more prose is needed? It was a redirect or something like that.—Prashant 07:39, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Prashant!: There is a javascript tool available that checks it for you. User:Shubinator/DYKcheck. According to that the prose has not been 5x expanded which is requirement if an article is not new such as this one. Article currently has 2278 characters. From the page history, it seems an article existed before your edits with 950 characters so 4750 would be needed which is impossible so I would focus on preparing it for FLC in the future rather than DYK. Cowlibob (talk) 08:04, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- I could expand it more as other notable awards are not mentioned in the lead. Since, the body contains a huge list of nominations and awards, the lead could be expanded acccording to that.—Prashant 08:10, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Let me know when you've fully expanded it, the lead needs to be at least 4750 characters in length. Cowlibob (talk) 08:17, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Re your message: Pharaoh of the Wizards already filed an SPI at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Jim Joneson Dulei/Archive. Though I'm likely to move it shortly to Alan Fillings as that was the original account as he created the original article. I had considered filing an SPI after I cleaned up the mess due to behavioral similarities, but for some reason I decided to wait until the next account to show up. I'm glad that it was taken care of sooner rather than later. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 19:25, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
Best Actress Oscar
I added or changed the pictures to some of the winners for Academy Award for Best Actress.
Also, do you think the winners and nominees for Best Director in each ceremony category should be arranged in alphabetical order by either person or film? Someone changed the order a few days ago. --Birdienest81 (talk) 19:46, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Birdienest81: Thanks for changing the pictures. The order should be the same as with every category, could you show me a diff of what change the other user has done? Cowlibob (talk) 09:34, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Cowlibob: For example in this example, the user rearranged the nominees in alphabetical order by film (previously, it was alphabetical order by nominees' last name). However, the director is still listed first before the film. Director is usually a major category akin to the acting. I personally prefer to order the nominees by their surnames, but I do not want to be accused of canvassing. What do you think?
- --Birdienest81 (talk) 22:41, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Birdienest81: I think the editor has changed it because the Academy orders it on that page for the awards that way so it's the "official" order. If it needs to be changed to conform with the Academy running order, all the categories would have to be changed, maybe an RFC could be useful as it would affect many articles. Best Actress FLC update
Once again, thanks for your help. I received comments from The Rambling Man regarding Academy Award for Best Actress for FL promotion. I've addressed almost all the comments. However, i am busy address some college financial aid kinks. Is it possible that you could add a double dagger to the winners a la Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for me. We can do it together in small increments. Also, he mentioned that there is a big blank space between the main winners/nominees table and the next section due to the pictures of the right running long. Which pictures should stay or go?
- --Birdienest81 (talk) 17:37, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- The list has been promoted. Could you close the nomination and update the article and talk pages?
I've left input on its FLC. Snuggums (talk / edits) 23:24, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

I just nominated Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for featured list promotion. Guntur West (Assembly constituency)
Can the article be split into two for the Guntur-2 assembly contituency or can be stated here itself?--Vin09 (talk) 09:03, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Vin09: If I understand correctly, Guntur-II was just renamed as Guntur West after delimitation.
