You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Benzband requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Removing AfD template

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with General relativity. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. This is an automated message from a bot about this edit, where you removed the deletion template from an article before the deletion discussion was complete. If this message is in error, please report it. Snotbot  t • c »  11:14, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is this bot too fooling people? Yasht101 :) 11:17, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, SnotBot has been causing trouble lately. benzband (talk) 12:34, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have closed this nomination as purely disruptive, as with an invalid reason and the article being both high quality and valuable it had zero chance of succeeding as you surely knew before nominating it. Please do not make such frivolous nominations again.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 11:30, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template Hero

[edit]

Hey there Benjamin Z. Band, I'm wondering if you'd like to use your template-y knowledge to help me out on a Project. The CVU started an ill-fated attempt reorganization recently, and the only really actionable idea that came out of This discussion was the idea of creating a Counter-vandalism Academy. The idea is, like Admin Coaching had been, to pair seasoned Vets with some wet-behind-the-ears Counter-vandals to help the latter learn the ropes. There are a few Templates that I think would be useful for the project, and I'm wondering if you'd be willing to help us out on that front. Just drop me a line here if you're interested. Cheers! Achowat (talk) 15:41, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! I'd be really happy to help on this. What kind of templates? :D benzband (talk) 17:07, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There's some information at the talk. It might be a good idea to centralize the discussion there, so others can weigh in. Achowat (talk) 17:13, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, i will do. benzband (talk) 17:18, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Missed discussion

[edit]
Hi Ben,
Sorry I did not reply to one of your comments in time to get it included on the project page, but I read many of the comments editors make. I think I could make more valuable contributions if I were willing to devote more time.
It seems to me that m:The future of Wikipedia link to the "They think they're so clever..." motto is an outdated discussion. Are the participants being offered as examples of dive? The WP:DIVA link contains a photo of Janio Quadros who does not seem to me to have acted as a Diva. He made a failed political maneuver in offering to resign. Still, it is similar to Diva behavior and I cannot think of a better example. I have not run into any dive on Wikipedia so I am not very familiar with the problem.
Happy editing, Fartherred (talk) 03:25, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Fartherred. Here's the motto in full (from Wikipedia:Motto of the day/May 9, 2012) :

They think they're so clever, they think they're so right
But the truth is only known by guttersnipe

"They think they're so clever" is the divas and vested contributors, who also "think they're so right". But the future of Wikipedia, however, lies with the new contributors, who will make up the next generation of editors (yes, it may be sad to admit, but at some point everyone ends up leaving WP).
As for problems with particular essays, i just linked to the best ones i could find. I didn't edit any of the linked pages, either. I am not familiar with Janio Quadros but i'm sure that if you found a better illustration it would be most welcome (especially if he didn't quite act like a diva); and as for the meta page, maybe Wikipedia:WINF or some other page might have better suited. It's a pity that the discussion is now over, as i myself wasn't too pleased with the meta page but couldn't find something more appropriate. Cheers, benzband (talk) 10:55, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About those code tags on the Teahouse

[edit]

That was a good idea, thanks! I've answered that question a few times on the Teahouse now; I always used to use pre tags, but I dislike they way they break up the paragraphs. Forgot about code tags. I'll have to use that from now on. Writ Keeper 16:26, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to have been able to help :D benzband (talk) 17:28, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There are more than 80K unassessed articles about US. I had a idea to start a contest regarding Assessment.

I thought that United States has a good number of articles now and needs clean up.

This will be beneficial for articles as well as editors as they will be able to interact with editors in their country and will learn new things and can obtain a lot of knowledge about their country.

There are similar contest which have been a great success. For e.g.,

  1. Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Assessment/Tag & Assess 2012 - In this I have made 3280 assessments in total 30K by all editors
  2. Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Assessment/Tag & Assess 2012 - I m coordinator even in this and have made 200 assessments for this which in total equal to 800 (This has started 2 days ago so the counter is low)

Though no one has taken interest yet in this contest despite of leaving a message on WP United states' talk page. I have gone to bot request to convey a message. So have to wait or have to convert that project as a failed project.

If you are interested then please let me know. And if you want to take part in its coordination then please tell as I'll need help in coordinating it, because currently I m the only coordinator. Yasht101 13:53, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Yasht! I recently instigated a similar sort of thing at WP:PUNK (see here), so i thought i'd tip you on using {{backlog progress bar}}. Example - for the US, this would be:
Click on [show]

Backlog: Unassessed United States articles
Goal: 0 articles
Current: 8,029 articles
Initial: 28,181 articles
(Refresh)

For my part i won't be helping out assess those articles, as i am not involved in any of the projects and am not sure i could furnish good quality reviews… and i have plenty of backlogs needing attention that i'm already (supposedly) engaged with (e.g. WP:WWF and Category:Articles with incorrect citation syntax). Thanks for contacting me though ~ benzband (talk) 16:22, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. But I think this contest will fail in US so have to declare it as fail if more then 10 editors didn't join it in 5 days. I appreciate your help. Thanks again :) Yasht101 00:58, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, i'll see what i can do to help but i can't promise anything… i'll just tag along and do some from time to time. ;) benzband (talk) 09:16, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Teahouseness!

[edit]

Hi Ben! Thanks so much for providing input and lending a hand at the Teahouse. Just curious if you'd have interest in being a Teahouse host?. Teahouse hosts are super important, especially during this pilot period. While answering questions is awesome, we also need help in inviting editors, tracking data, etc. I know it's not the most fun stuff, but, it's a really really important aspect. I hope you'll consider lending a hand! Thanks! Sarah (talk) 14:22, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll sure be heppy to lend a hand :D I'll just tag along and try to do some of what needs doing when i can. And thanks for leaving a note here, i really appreciate that. benzband (talk) 18:02, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yay! Great, I'm glad to hear that. Just a note, I moved your question about the invitation to the Host lounge, which is where all the templates and related resources are: WP:Teahouse/Host lounge, and it's generally a good place for the hosts to discuss templates, and so forth. So there ya go :) Sarah (talk) 18:56, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ben! Thank you for signing up to be a future host at the Teahouse. Well, great news - the future is here, we'd love you to be a Teahouse host! During this pilot time, Teahouse hosts do more than just ask questions - they invite new users to the Teahouse and track those invitations, they also provide input and insight into the development of the Teahouse. A few things I'd love to see you do as a Teahouse host:

  • First, declare your Hostness! Add yourself to the Host page! This page is where new editors and your fellow hosts can learn about you and reach out. By signing up here you declare that you know how to serve up a great cup of tea. Add yourself here.
  • Learn more about your responsibilities as a host. Teahouse hosts have certain responsibilities during this pilot. If you feel you can't meet them, perhaps a host role isn't for you during this important pilot, just let me know!
  • Invite new users with our invite guide. Aside from answering questions, the most important thing we need you to do as a host is to invite new users. Please follow these steps and invite as many as you can to experience the Teahouse. Also, please document your experience in the spreadsheet link provided on that page!
  • Visit the tips page. The tips page provides you some basic tips on how to engage with visitors at the Teahouse. We have a special way of doing things - unlike other areas of Wikipedia! (Such as greeting new editors with a simple "Hi!" and being as easy to understand and friendly as possible.)
  • Join the conversation by participating on the host lounge talk pages. We also have an IRC channel now for hosts to get to know one another, develop your skills, and eventually the channel will serve as an additional help space for new editors!
  • To visit the IRC channel: #wikipedia-teahouse connect (Feel free to ask me for help if you're having trouble connecting!)

I'm so happy that you volunteered to lend a hand at the Teahouse. I look forward to following your contributions and invitations, and your assistance in making the Teahouse a great and warm place for new Wikipedians. See you there :) Sarah (talk) 22:32, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try my best to do what's expected of me, yesh. benzband (talk) 10:19, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]

Hi.

One small problem ... is that a "no show" option for infobox templates?

For example, when an organization does not have a website, the template shows ... "Website optional display text".

Ideally, it should just be blank.

Thanks. --Bridge Boy (talk) 22:06, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed using #ifeq so that the {{URL}} only displays if the |website= parameter is defined (see diff). (have also tested it in the sandbox and it seems to work fine now :) benzband (talk) 09:01, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmn ... no way I would have guessed that. Thanks for your time and energy, but ...
It works with every page WITHOUT a URL, e.g. Finks motorcycle club. However, unfortunately it breaks every page WITH an active URL ... San Francisco Motorcycle Club.
it comes up with ... {{URL|}}http://www.sf-mc.org}}
Do I have to re-write the way it handles live URLs? --Bridge Boy (talk) 00:16, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, what is all this triple bracket stuff {{{ and where can I learn about it? --Bridge Boy (talk) 00:21, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed (diffs) this time i'm pretty sure of it :D i've tested it with and without website in the sandbox and it seems to work (finally! :) — i've also simplified it using #if: instead of #ifeq: (these are Parser functions).
The triple brackets are for creating parameters, say adding {{{name|}}} into the template creates a parameter, |name=, which can be defined by the user. You can read more about this (and find out a load of really cool stuff) at Help:Template#Creating and editing templates. Cheers, benzband (talk) 08:31, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

More template help

[edit]

Perhaps you can help me out over at Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit/Sandbox, particularly establishing a clear visual identity by making Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit/Sandbox/TopPanel the same color as all the other templates used. And did I mention that you're my template hero? Achowat (talk) 15:28, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done (diff) i've currently set it to white background with blu 2px border (copied from the {{cartella}} design). Just ping me if it needs anything else :-) benzband (talk) 16:39, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, unless you can design graphically, I can't imagine needing you for anything else, but I'll know who to call. But...
The Template Barnstar
For all your service working to revitalize the CVU, specifically through the building and maintaining of templates, it is my honor to present you with The Template Barnstar. Thank you! Achowat (talk) 17:33, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I'm glad i could help (also i've been learning a load of things through involvement in this), and… good luck with the Academy! :) benzband (talk) 17:40, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad I could help you learn a bit while using your skills for my pet project. As a Knight Template (like a Knight Templar, but not attacked by the Pope), do you have any comments on the CVU Sandbox layout? Achowat (talk) 17:44, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So far i think it's looking good, IMHO a lot better than the current layout which i think is a bit messy. Also maybe there are a few more things from the CVU page that ought to be included (such as say the boxes ({{WikipediaVandalism}} and {{Noticeboard Links}}) and a few more bits and bobs); otherwise, fine job! benzband (talk) 17:52, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Given the Vandalism Studies Merger (just completed), would it be possible to make (studies=yes) parameter for {{CVU}}, so we can track the VanStudies pages seperately, as well? Achowat (talk) 18:34, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done - although i couldn't find an appropriate icon so i just used for the time being. benzband (talk) 18:55, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've got my Graphic Designer working on a complete CVU identity, including a logo for each of the 4 branches of CVU. He should have that done by tomorrow noon. Achowat (talk) 18:58, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that'll be good ^^ benzband (talk) 19:01, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm have a hard time fitting {{WikipediaVandalism}} into the format in an aesthetically pleasing way. Any ideas? Achowat (talk) 19:53, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
checkY figured it out, like a G. Achowat (talk) 19:56, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Aye, G! benzband (talk) 20:22, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You have new message/s Hello. You have a new message at Achowat's talk page. (your turn)
[edit]

We've got one now, at File:CVU Academy.svg. Any way you can sneak it into the templates? Achowat (talk) 12:12, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, checkY done on the welcome templates and userbox. For {{CVU}}, should i make it replace the main icon (when |academy=yes or just insert it in place of the school.svg icon? benzband (talk) 15:14, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sandbox them both and then use your best judgment. Achowat (talk) 15:17, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have and i decided it best to replace the bigger — so it doesn't repeat the logo twice, and so one can actually see what it says on the Academy logo. I've done that for now :) benzband (talk) 15:21, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Benzo, this was kind of your baby, did you want to take a shot at building the page to fit your vision? I think you're the only one involved in the Academy discussions with any sort of experience at The Teahouse, so I think you'd be the most qualified to give it the ol' college try. The only thing I want to see would be a header with (among other things) links to Teahouse questions and the Help Desk, with information on when you'd use each of the three forums. Something like "This page is for X, for new editors looking to Y, see the Teahouse, for more experienced editors with questions unrelated to X, see the Help Desk" (except that that is terrible technical language that will likely turn off any newbies that stop by. Achowat (talk) 13:53, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Done i've drafted something up. benzband (talk) 15:55, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You know you now need to make a Talkback Template, right? Achowat (talk) 16:07, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
 Done {{CVUA-TB}} :D benzband (talk) 16:34, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Stories Project

[edit]

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I asked Sarah Stierch who might be good to talk to, and she gave me your name.

I'd very much like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project.

Thank you for your time,

Could you take a look at what happened here and see if that's an easy fix? Achowat (talk) 15:56, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be possible to take a look at this diff and make up a Template for everyone to use to congradulate their Graduates? I'm sure my template hero won't fail me now. Achowat (talk) 13:12, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Done at Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit/Academy/Graduate :) benzband (talk) 15:03, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Any way we can make it CVU Blue? I don't want it to necessarily look like a Barnstar. Achowat (talk) 15:20, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
checkY Blue (approx.) and with rounded corners. benzband (talk) 16:33, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Collapse v Hidden

[edit]

That's why I used {{Collapse top}} and {{Collapse bottom}} rather than {{hidden}} - they wrap and don't cut across TOC etc. NtheP (talk) 10:41, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I tried {{collapse top
bottom
}} but it wouldn't wrap thus leaving a big blank space (see oldid). So i tried {{hidden}} as an alternative, before discovering it didn't work any better. benzband (talk) 10:47, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!
