WikiCup 2019 March newsletter

Extended content

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • United States L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
  • Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
  • Denmark MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
  • United States Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
  • Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
  • Ohio Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. ⚠
Thanks for uploading File:Bit House Saloon logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:22, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, Oregon Jewish Museum, Thursday, March 7

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host the 2nd Annual International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Thursday, March 7 from 4 to 8 pm. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter 18 Jewish women artists into the canon. Support will be provided by an experienced local Wikipedian who will be on site to teach and guide the process. This edit-a-thon will serve as both a public art action and a public educational program. Participants will have an opportunity to select an artist/s ahead of time or on site.

Please visit this link and the meetup page for more information. Thanks! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:25, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Still working in drafts?

Extended content

I may have already brought this up with you, so if I have, I'm asking again: Why did you tell me at some point in the not-too-distant past that if I wanted to make a page for a topic you'd already made a redirect for, to just approach or ping you and ask for you to request speedy deletion for it yourself, but you don't actually approach any other editor to ask them to do so for theirs? I'm not asking this so you'll start doing it to me, but it seems like a double standard, as if this was some congenial thing you would afford other editors/you want them to let you know their intentions, but you don't seem to want to let them know you're intending to make pages for their redirects by informing them about it. Instead, you're still going the draft route (as you've done for the two Diplo EPs you just made articles for), as if you're unsure the topics you're making redirects for are even notable. You're not new, you're an editor who's been around for over a decade, like myself, and I would trust by this point you know what's notable and what's not, considering you're also including news sources and reviews on them, which are clear indications of notability. Please don't tell me the only reason is "I don't know how editors would react if asked, but I know I would if asked" because as I said, it just seemed like you want(ed) to be informed for some reason but don't actually do the same in practice. I'm not accusing you of acting in bad faith, I'm just baffled by the fact that you're still making these articles as drafts instead of in your userspace. I only recommend this to newer editors. This is exactly why I never did and still won't come to you to let you know; I'll just request it elsewhere, because your request made no sense if it's not a vice versa thing. I'll also be sure to make a little stub next time Diplo announces an EP, album or notable song, and it'd be great to see you work on that...Doubt it though. Ss112 12:52, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Also, I see you're still uploading oversized jpgs. I know you said "I'll leave it to a bot to resize them, thanks", but literally what is the point if your original file is just going to be deleted anyway? That completely negates the point of you even bothering to upload them in the first place. Also, it only takes a matter of seconds to resize a file. Every computer has either Paint or a similar simple artwork program that allows you to do this, and you can very easily resize the files (to 300×300 or smaller) in about two clicks. I also already told you, but jpgs are compressed, and pngs are preferred for artworks. Ss112 13:06, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Ss112, We've had this discussion before. I don't have a problem moving a draft over a redirect in the main space, nor do I have a problem with other editors doing the same to override redirects I've created. I don't recall requesting to be notified about potential overrides, but you're welcome to direct me to my previous comment. I have a feeling this was a special instance involving a technical restriction. I don't think editors should take ownership of their redirects. Creating an article takes more work than creating a redirect, and the author should have the right to move their work over a redirect. Re: oversized jpgs, I don't care to spend time resizing when a bot will simply take care of it for me. Not a big deal. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:08, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
So, to be clear, feel free to override redirects I've created (I don't care...), and by all means, feel free to create stubs over redirects. Redirects or stubs, I appreciate all the work you do for Wikipedia. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:25, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Nobody's taking ownership of redirects... that would be rather hypocritical of me to complain that you did this, as I do it (or request it) quite a bit myself (and have even done it to several of yours, if I recall correctly). Not the issue. My main confusion stemmed from the articles originating in draftspace, which is frequently the place to incubate undersourced or potential non-notable topics, and the place for editors unsure of how to make an article and the like to start pages. It just seems to be a rather strange method. For the record, I don't recall where you requested to be notified nor over what, but I definitely recall you having said it. Ss112 15:39, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Ss112, Ok well, like my process or don't, but I'm working to improve Wikipedia as I see fit. I don't recall requesting to be notified of potential overrides, so I don't know what to say on that topic. Take care! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:43, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
I would have left it there AB, but that's a very bizarre sign-off. I'm sure I don't need to say that we can't all just do as we see fit on Wikipedia, as there are policies and guidelines stating or recommending how we should do things, and most of us are here to improve Wikipedia. It's not as if you needed to make that clear, because there was never a doubt here that what you did was to improve Wikipedia in some way. I made that clear from the start. Ss112 16:11, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Ss112, I just meant, you may or may not like how I work in the draft space then submit requests to override redirects in the main space, but I don't have a problem with this method. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:14, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

March 2019

Resolved

Your recent editing history at Kirsten Gillibrand 2020 presidential campaign shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. – Muboshgu (talk) 03:19, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Muboshgu, I'm glad to step away from this article and let others review recent edits and talk page discussions. Thanks. ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:21, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
@Muboshgu: Please see I most recently revisited talk page discussion before reverting. I did not think I violated any rules, but sorry if I've overstepped in any way. Definitely taking a back seat now that other editors have this on their radar. Thanks, ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:26, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
Honestly, I've been noticing that user's edits quite a bit and while I hadn't wanted to intervene, I had thoughts that I should, or might have to. It looks like the "might have to" point has come. I just gave you that warning for heads up and to not show favorites against Tony85spoon when I hit them with the template. – Muboshgu (talk) 03:45, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
I had a feeling that it was Tony, and she has confirmed it. So for the record, that warning was unnecessary. I'm refactoring it. – Muboshgu (talk) 04:19, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
@Muboshgu: Thank you. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:10, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Another user's problematic edits

Take a look at Theneondemon's edits. They go back far, and it's a pattern of them constantly changing the progress tables to fit their own view point. I'm not sure whether to take this to ANI yet, but it will help to have a few more eyes on it. Pinging Brocicle as well. Thanks. Nihlus 04:46, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

If it's disruptive and there's plenty of evidence showing constantly going against the consensus I don't see why it shouldn't be taken to ANI. Brocicle (talk) 15:14, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Lines of Color requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a musical recording which does not indicate why its subject is important or significant, and where the artist's article does not exist or is eligible for deletion itself. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for music.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. A tag has been placed on White Owl Social Club, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Graywalls, This page should not be speedy deleted. Can you please create talk page discussions instead of just flagging everything? ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:38, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
It's nothing personal, but I stumbled upon your pattern of article creations that substantially fail to conform to the basic requirements of organization notability. You've preached how you have been editing for years but the fact other veteran editors also find your contents lacking in notability should mean something. You didn't articulate with a counter-argument in the scope of business notability guidelines as used on Wikipedia, not how you personally feel. I find it a waste of everyone's time to nominate for deletion and go through consensus process for multiple articles that substantially fail to meet the same set of guidelines. Graywalls (talk) 15:13, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Graywalls, I understand what you mean, but if you look at the Nuestra Cocina talk page you'll see that the entry has already survived a deletion discussion. Just because articles are short does not mean they need to be deleted. I'm just asking for talk page discussions to start because I'm logging in and seeing 10 pages that have been either merged, nominated for deletion, or deleted, and now I'm having to scramble to rescue them all. I recognize you may not care because you believe the topics are not notable, but I'm asking you to please slow down so editors can discuss and take action. Another Believer, Assuming you're not exaggerating about logging into ten deletion and mergers, you know it wasn't all me nominating them. If multiple people are nominating your articles for deletion, I'm inclined to say it might be your actions, not other editors. You appeal to your experience and confidence when I've challenged your articles and edits and with your level of experience, I'm surprised you're adding all these articles that do not have the necessary elements. I'd rather you stopped churning out all these local business listings and dumping them into Wikipedia as if it was Citypage. Graywalls (talk) 13:16, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
@Graywalls: I don't feel inclined to reply here. These discussions are becoming circular. Happy editing, ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:38, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

You wrote "Can you please restore this page? The entry should not have been deleted." Maybe you could tell me why you think it shouldn't have been deleted. Deb (talk) 14:42, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Deb, The article should be expanded, not deleted. There's plenty of coverage... One editor is marking tons of pages for deletion and should not be. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:43, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
The fact that I deleted the article shows that I agreed with the editor who nominated it. I didn't delete it without looking at it first and I found that there was no claim of notability and there was a clear advertising intent. Deb (talk) 14:45, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Deb, I'm asking for a move into the draft space, then, so I can make further improvements. I promise, this company is notable. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:47, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
There's nothing to stop you creating a draft from scratch. Deb (talk) 14:50, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Deb, I'd prefer not to start from scratch, though. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:50, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
What sources do you plan to use to demonstrate notability? Deb (talk) 15:01, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Deb, There are plenty to add, which I'd prefer to add to the draft page and not my user talk page. If you're not willing to help, I will find another admin who is willing to restore the page. I didn't think restoring to the draft space was problematic. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:02, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Why not just start the draft by creating the links to the references? You don't need to submit it yet. Deb (talk) 15:14, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Deb, I'm not sure what you mean. I'd just like the page restored and moved into the draft space, so I can continue working, please. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:15, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Create a draft showing the links you are going to use, then I'll restore your text and incorporate the references. Deb (talk) 15:17, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Deb, I searched "Elephants Delicatessen" at the Oregonian archives via my library card and there are hundreds of returns. There are also many Google and Google News search returns. I don't want to create a long list of sources, but I'm asking to have the page restored and moved into draft space for further improvement. I've also asked if any WikiProject Oregon admins will help. Thank you. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:27, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
And I've said I will do that when I've seen some of your sources. Deb (talk) 15:36, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Deb, Well the library sources are paywalled, so sharing those URLs is not particularly helpful. I'll see if anything comes from the discussion at WikiProject Oregon. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:37, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
I'm the editor who nominated it. Many of your articles have come under scrutiny, so I have found out. Most of your opposition arguments have been appeal to confidence and "The article should be expanded, not deleted." without supporting premises. For this particular article, you had all of two sentences and one reference made of the company's official website and a list of seven addresses as of Mar 3, 2019. This rightfully earned you the unambiguous promotion deletion. When many of your articles have the same fundamental issue (lack of basic notability and obvious promotional intent hinted by tone, and participation by the businesses by the means of direct editing), I'd be wasting other editors' time to list them for deletion consensus building. So if you aren't ignorant of notability guidelines, you're gaming the system by trying to increase the work load as a deterrent to deletion. Graywalls (talk) 16:34, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
I don't feel a need to reply to you here. Happy editing, ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:35, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

A cup of tea for you!

And sympathy. As someone who has been hit before with a rapid-fire series of AfDs (sometimes by sometimes by sockpuppets, other times by POV editors,) I know ow overwhelming this can feel. I have learned a lot about mistakes I was making from deletion discussions, and am a more careful editor now. Don't take it too much to heart. A few deleted articles are not that big a deal. E.M.Gregory (talk) 18:38, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
@E.M.Gregory: Thank you, and I totally agree. Article deletions are not the end of the world to me, but I still don't think articles about notable topics should be deleted, and my biggest frustration is not being able to rescue everything at once. I've asked the nominator to slow down, and I'm trying to keep up as possible. I acknowledge some stubs may be lost, which I will just have to recreate and flesh out in the draft space. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:45, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Templates

Extended content

Hello, and I hope all is well. With some of your newest templates of West Coast artists, there seems to be an unwritten template rule (maybe it should be written) that a template should have at least five entries. Templates like {{Buster Simpson}} are coming in under that. There are quite a few major artists who have under five possible-use entries, and they are untemplated (my favorites among the 'untemplated' include John Peter Russell and many European painters). But I am a template snob, so there's that. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:43, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Randy Kryn, Hey! I was not aware of a 5-article rule, but I sometimes create navboxes when I find 4 related entries, such as 3 works associated with an artist. Unless I am overlooking, I don't see a number requirement at Wikipedia:Navbox or Template:Navbox, so I'm not exactly sure. If you're asking whether or not you should create navboxes, I say be bold and create templates you think are helpful to the project. Worse case scenario is the community disagrees and the template is deleted. :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:53, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I think it's an unwritten rule sometimes used at the templates-for-deletion page, but not written into the Holey writ. I opened a category once for John Russell, thinking that there would be more pages than just his portrait of van Gogh, and was surprised upon finding it was his only painting that had a Wikipedia page. Best artist from Australia, in my opinion. Randy Kryn (talk) 16:40, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

WikiProject importance scale

Hello, I noticed that you have updated the importance scale of several WikiProjects. Out of curiosity, can anyone update this? What is the criteria that is used? For example, the importance scale for Pure Heroine is low even though I think it should be raised a bit higher given how many publications have cited the album as influential or a record that aided in pop music's transition to slower tempo songs and deeper lyrical content. What do you think? De88 (talk) 23:54, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

De88, Yes, quality assessment ratings are subjective and can be manually adjusted by any editor. Wikipedia:Content assessment and Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Release Version Criteria should provide helpful information. You should know, many editors (myself included) use the Rater gadget (User:Evad37/rater, formerly User:Kephir/gadgets/rater) which automatically assesses and assumes low-importance as the default importance rating. This is because for most WikiProjects, most articles are ranked low-importance. So, the tool starts here, then the community can change quality and importance ratings as they see fit. In other words, yes, you're welcome to change the ratings. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:10, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the information. I will update the WikiProject important scale for artists I feel deserve a higher rating with proper judgment. De88 (talk) 00:54, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles.

March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Sign up here!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

Hello, Another Believer,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Onel5969 and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Plastique Tiara should be deleted. Your comments are welcome over Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Plastique Tiara .

You might like to note that such discussions usually run for seven days and are not ballot-polls. And, our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Onel5969}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

What's so hard about simply redirecting a page...? ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:57, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Resolved

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Plastique Tiara requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

Onel5969 TT me 05:46, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

@JamesBWatson, JJMC89, and Onel5969: There was no need to delete the article's history altogether. Plastique is likely to be notable in the future. You one of you please restore the deleted markup? I'm open to moving the markup into Draft:Plastique Tiara (or Draft:Plastique Tiara 2 since there's an existing draft page), but I'd like the markup for future reference, please. For the record, I agree with maintaining the redirect, but I wish to keep the article history as well. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:26, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
The reason that I deleted the article, rather than just edit-protecting it, is that my experience is that in this situation keeping the article's history serves to encourage the editors who wish to undermine consensus at the deletion discussion. Very often they do things such as copying the content to a new article under a new title to evade protection. Of course, there is nothing to stop them from just creating a brand new article with a different title anyway, but in practice they far less often do so if they see that what they create is likely to disappear completely. I feel that is particularly important in this case, as the editor involved has a history of multiple sockpuppetry and block evasion, and because he or she has openly stated the intention of continuing to defy the deletion decision. What would you say to a compromise by keeping it deleted for a few months and then restoring it? That might possibly deter the disruptive editor, but still make the content available for possible future use. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:03, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
JamesBWatson, Can't we just keep the page protected, but restore the article history? That would prevent the IP editor from overriding the redirect, right? ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:06, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
Yes, of course it would, but it would do nothing to address the problem I described above. However, since you are evidently not interested in my proposed way of dealing with it, I will just restore the history. Not my first choice, but never mind. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:35, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
JamesBWatson, Thank you. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:36, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Admins needed

I'm thinking about this... ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:07, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

During the situation with Tony85poon, I wondered why you're not an admin. I found User_talk:Another_Believer/Archive_24#No_mop? and I can say I was once like you, deflecting suggestions that I run for adminship, and those two points were two of my reasons for saying no. But, to those points, (a) I thought the admin nomination process would be a pain too, but it wasn't. There are a few challenging questions to answer, but they can help you reflect on your editing and what kind of admin you'd be. And (b) Mr Guye showed you that list of tools. It can get complex, but you can keep it simple too. If there's a vandal working fast and furious, you can block them. Protecting pages from vandalism, removing serious BLP violations from the edit histories, that's mostly what I use it for. If there's an admin task you don't want to involve yourself in, you don't have to! You could be the admin who blocks a stray vandal once or twice but otherwise focuses on the content. I'm still creating content about the same rate I was before. I was hesitant to take the plunge too, but I don't regret it. I doubt you would either. And we could use you as an admin around here. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:39, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Muboshgu, I really appreciate your kind words and trust with admin tools. I've been approached many times to become an admin, both on- and off-wiki. Every time someone asks, I say I'll give this some thought, and then I end up forgetting once I start getting back into Wikipedia's trenches. So, I'll just say now, thanks and I'll give this some consideration once again, but don't hold your breath. I do wish I had some of these helpful tools, but I fear becoming an admin will make editing feel more like a job, rather than editing as a hobby for fun. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:44, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
That sounds familiar to me too. I think I said "I'll think about it" in order to punt on it many times before I gave in and did it. I understand the concern about the responsibility. I had that concern too. It hasn't been a problem for me as all of the admin activities are voluntary. You don't have a "shift" where you have to be in charge of blocking vandals, protecting pages, or anything like that. You do it out of your own interest. I also think your hesitation/resistance/whatever-you-want-to-call-it is one of the signs you'd make a great admin. If you were going to abuse the power, you would've taken the plunge years ago. Take some time to think about it, but I won't let it drop that easily. :) I'll check in in a week or two. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:59, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
For what it's worth, I second this! Chetsford (talk) 22:50, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi! It's been a week or two. What are your thoughts? – Muboshgu (talk) 15:44, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

@Muboshgu: I'm flattered, truly, but I think I'll continue to kick this can down the road. I'm mostly just not wanting to go through the process at this time. I've also spent a significant amount of time the last two weeks dealing with one specific editor, and this has reminded me how much I'd prefer to focus on content and not cleaning up after others. Do I think the tools would be helpful? Yes. Do I think I can be trusted? Yes. Do I think I've demonstrated dedication and enthusiasm for the Wikimedia movement? Yes. I might bite the bullet some day, but that day won't be in the immediate future. Thanks again for your support. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:50, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
Well, that's too bad. I understand though. I also don't expect this is the last time you'll hear from me on this. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:25, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Question about WP:NFCCP

Hi! Just want to ask your opinion on something I'd like to do in the Honey Davenport article. There's a section about the Monster Bar controversy, which was sparked by this flyer. That image itself is not licensed for reuse, but do you think it would be appropriate to add a low-resolution version of it to the article under WP:NFCCP? Armadillopteryxtalk 22:32, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

@Armadillopteryx: Thanks for your work on the article. If I'm being honest, I don't really know the answer. Generally, the only fair use images I add to Wikipedia are album covers. Consider posting a note on the talk page? ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:45, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Armadillopteryx, I think the hangup will be #8: "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:03, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, you're probably right. I'll leave it for now. Thanks! Armadillopteryxtalk 04:27, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Dante's

Extended content

Hi, this all looks off topic to the subject of Dante's nightclub. It might be relevant to an article about that building, but the article is about the club itself. If you disagree that this is off topic, please be bold and add material to the article or alterantively since the article talk page is for by-god discussion of article improvements, please start a by-god substantive discussion about this material. Per WP:TPG and WP:BRD. Thanks. Note than almost three weeks have gone by since you wrote the material was parked for "future reference" but no one, including you, seems to have done anything in that time. 1890s through 1960

The building at the corner of SW 3rd and Burnside has gone through many incarnations. One of the confounding factors, when researching the history of this building, is that in 1891, Portland annexed territories east of the Willamette River, and enacted an ordinance for numbering the streets, but in 1931, the north-to-south division of the city was shifted from SW Ankeny Street to Burnside Street, which necessitated yet another change in the numbering system of streets.[1] The Oregon Historical Society has a directory that effectively translates the old addresses into the newer format.[2] For example, an address that was formerly at 13 Northwest 3rd Avenue, was now "shifted" south and became simply number 3 Southwest 3rd Avenue, the current site of Dante's pizza window. Properties on the south side of Burnside were "shifted" east. The three story structure at 314 SW Burnside was formerly numbered as 264 SW Burnside. While this re-alignment was confusing at the time, it laid the groundwork for the modern Portland street system as it is currently aligned.

In transcribing the history of the building, it is important to remember that Dante's is composed of two structures. The main room is in a one-story structure and comprises the eastern half of the venue. The Limbo Lounge sits to the west and there are an additional two stories above it, that are currently in use.[citation needed]

Examination of Oregon Historical Society documents indicates that the parcel of land that Dante's currently sits upon are lots 5 through 8 of the block in Couch's Addition, and were owned by various members of the Jorgensen family, beginning sometime around the 1890s to 1900s, and possibly earlier. This is further corroborated through the City of Portland's Bureau of Buildings, which is in possession of several building permits for the property, filed by various members of the Jorgensen family or estate. The earliest dates to October 19, 1921, at the 3-story property at 314 West Burnside Street (formerly known as 266 West Burnside Street under the pre-1931 street system), which references the ground floor property as a "Soft drink and Lunch."

Building permit from 1921
Permit records from June 30, 1926, indicate that the same property was home to a rooming house on its second and third stories.[3] By cross-referencing these records with a phone directory from 1930 and the Crane's Directory, it appears that the 3-story building was formerly known as the Montana Hotel.

Further examination of Oregon Historical Society photographs[4][5] of the intersection of SW 3rd and Burnside, dated from May 1927, clearly show the landmark Union Theater (now the Paris Theater) just across the street from the eastern half of Dante's which is where the main room, bar, and kitchen are currently situated. There is a second and third story on top of the existing structure which is labeled as the Winchester House. It is this property that was reputed to be a brothel, but in the parlance of the times it was also known as a "flophouse". Interviews with persons of this era also indicate that this was where day-laborers could be found, in addition to a host of other characters. The 1929 phone book also lists tenants of the first floor of the block to be a restaurant owned by Fred Soller and a clothier named Julius Breall.[6] Prior to the appearance of the Winchester House, this building is reported to have been a liquor distribution warehouse.

On October 2, 1930, Pauline Jorgensen, the listed owner of the Winchester House had the Rose City Wrecking Company demolish the Winchester House's wooden structure down to the existing one-story structure that forms Dante's main room.[7] The last existing inspection records of the 3-story property referencing Jorgensen ownership are dated March 24, 1959, and specifically cite the installation of fire doors and wooden partitions in the current 3-story structure that forms Dante's Limbo Lounge.[8] The City's last record of Jorgensen ownership or activity of the one-story structure is dated June 29, 1983, and lists a Victor Hugo Jorgensen as the owner of the one-story property.[9]

1960–present

There have been several owners and incarnations inside of the one-story and three-story structures that form Dante's. At some point, fill-brick was used to partition the once contiguous ground-floor space. This was later removed and the original brickwork was restored and structurally upgraded.

From the 1960s onward, records on the 3-story structure are sparse, but a series of documents dated to 1979 indicated that the building was owned by Rip City Realty.[10] There are additional documents dated January 8, 1982, that list a Lanny Swerdlow as the owner of the aforementioned structure.[11] Swerdlow came to rather infamous notoriety in Portland after opening a series of alternative-lifestyle nightclubs for teens, running afoul of the law on numerous occasions.[12] In the 1990s the ground floor was home to the infamous Dr. Bill's Learning Center. Following Dr. Bill's retirement in 1996, it became Aja's Lingerie. Currently located on the top floor suite, It is now the only female owned/operated private adult entertainment club exclusive to gentleman only, management has remained the same since 2009, even though the owners and names of the business have frequently changed throughout the years. The third floor has a separate entrance located directly to the west of Dante's main doors. The entryway leads to a staircase that you can climb to the third floor to find this underground tourist attraction that has been a tourist favorite hot spot for many years. The one-story structure has primarily served as a restaurant since the 1960s, but appears to have been unoccupied for several long stretches. Permits from 1984 indicate that the restaurant was legally known as the New Canaan Restaurant (corporate name), doing business as Chang's Mongolian Grill.[13] From 1985 to 1999, the one-story structure comprising Dante's main room, at the southwest corner of West Burnside and Third Avenue, was the original Chang's Mongolian Grill.[14] On April 1, 1999, Frank Faillace took over the lease from Chang's[citation needed], remodeling and opening on February 3, 2000.

Prior to 1984, there are virtually no official building or inspection records that help to identify the activity in this particular property. In the 1970s up until 1984, it was a punk rock music venue called The Metropolis or "The Met", which featured underground punk bands like The Cramps and The Wipers. The Met was a favorite hangout of a diverse crowd including punk rockers, drag queens and strippers including a soon-to-be-famous Courtney Love.

The building is currently owned by J.A. Atwood Investments.[15]

NewsAndEventsGuy, Thanks? I don't care about this content, nor did I feel compelled to work on the Dante's article just to rescue from AfD. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:10, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
OK.... the text is preserved in the version history, so it all seems sort of pointless to have it floating around in talk. Sounds like you're OK with it being gone. Does that mean there really isn't a dispute at Talk:TPG, and that thread can close? NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 17:24, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
NewsAndEventsGuy, Dispute? Graywalls seems to dislike everything I do here at Wikipedia, and takes time to point out lots of my edits for unknown reasons. No dispute as far as I'm concerned. Kyle Peake, I'll keep an eye on the page, and may contribute now and then, but I am actually not a fan of Kanye West or his music. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:51, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
That surprises me since you've popped up on the edit history of his articles a few times, but it's your opinion at the end of the day. I can tell from the way @BeatlesLedTV: has referenced West on talk pages that he/she is a fan though so that would be a recognizable helper. --Kyle Peake (talk) 16:54, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Kyle Peake, Yes, I've created some Kanye articles (prob most just as redirects which have since been expanded by others), and of course he collaborates with many other artists, some of whom I follow. As for Kanye himself, not a fan. :p I'm sure the project will grow as other fans contribute! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:58, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Yeah I do understand what you're on about here, do you hate Kanye or he is just ok in your book with maybe a few decent songs? Kyle Peake (talk) 17:04, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Kyle Peake, Eh, I've liked some of his work and certainly respect his artistry and talent. But generally I find him obnoxious, and I'm more into pop than hip hop. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:29, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Mother's Monument and translation in general

Extended content
Hi AB, I added a translated page template to the Mother's Monument talk page. I assume that your creation of this article is related to the discussion you started at the Village Pump about increasing translations of articles? I did a quick edit, but there is still work to be done. I'm afraid that there were tells that at least the base of the article came from Google Translate or a similar program (we see this a lot at the GOCE). For example, the phrase "the sculptures are made of quarry on an enclosure base." This seems to be the translation given by Google for "las esculturas son de cantera sobre una base de recinto" at the Spanish article. I don't know the word "cantera" (my Spanish is, at best, mediocre), but Google gives one definition as "piedra que se utiliza en la construcción" (rock used in construction), which is likely the intended meaning here instead of "quarry." There may be other mistranslations that are less obvious, though, but could misinform a reader of the article. That is one reason why I was nervous about article quality in a translation competition. It was also partially why I started my (sadly unsuccessful) wikiproject for fluent speakers of different languages to partner together to translate articles from one language to the other. I could write a lot more about my thoughts on translation on Wikipedia but I need to get to bed now. Cheers, Tdslk (talk) 06:22, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
Tdslk, Thank you very much. My translation was not related to the Village Pump discussion -- I saw this monument during a recent visit to Mexico City, so I just wanted there to be an article at English Wikipedia like there is at Spanish Wikipedia. As for the competition discussed at Village Pump, I think ideally participants would be multilingual, not using Google Translate, for this very reason. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:11, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
@Tdslk: I'm trying to centralize discussion here, if you're interested. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:08, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Translation

Extended content

Thanks for alerting me to that discussion. I reply here (rather than there) because it is a serious but complex set of issues that you touch on, and I am not sure I will usefully progress the thing if I jump into the soup on the basis of instant reactions. My general impression is that you have triggered lots of interesting thoughts and ideas, but the more strands you get into the discussion the harder it becomes to get to something that will cohere into a doable project. Herding cats comes to mind. And speaking (writing) for myself, I fear I am instinctively more likely to identify with the cats than with the shepherds and their dogs, however much I admire and / or respect the motives of the dogs and their partners.

My (relatively) considered thoughts on the translation project are summarised here. It was set up - or at least relaunched - by a wiki-user with huge focus, energy and sheer intellectual horsepower steaming out of his ears. "Dr Blofeld" has done more that is good for wikipedia than most of us are ever likely to manage ("IMHO..."). And he himself has contributed large amounts of good content over the years which gives him authority in terms of leading - trying to lead - others of us. But nevertheless, the translation project was an example of Person A enthusiastically telling Persons B, C and D and and what to do. And, which is more striking, how to do it. I went along with it because it ties in, more or less, with what I already did. I still do partly out of habit, partly because the structure of the thing helps me structure my wiki activity and partly because simply having it still there draws peoples' attention to the potential goldmine of wiki-viable information in wikipedia versions which are not in the English language. And although none of the other people who jumped in and joined the relaunched project back in 2015 still uses it to structure their work, many of them are still producing excellent translations for en-wiki. Mostly quietly unless (1) you know where to look or (2) you just happen to alight on an example.

I have received various invitations to participate in marathons over the years, but I tend to ignore them (if they're standardised) or at least politely decline (if they're personal). Time spent mastering the marathon-rules (or worse still, trying to influence them) is time I would rather spend contributing "content". But this is a personal thing to me. The team sports gene has rather passed me by. That makes me a bit of a curmudgeon. Guilty as charged; but there are self-evidently an awful lot of curmudgens doing their number constructively (in many cases) on wikipedia. Marathons can be fun once in a while, but I think - however much I shared the underlying goals - I think I would be unlikely to come on board and if I did I'd be unlikely to stay. But that's just me. I do wish you every success. Wikipedia always needs new ideas, and with the average age of productive contributors still getting higher I suspect that these days it needs them ever more. And you have already triggered plenty of other thoughts each one of which may go to a good place on a large scale or a lesser scale. That's all helpful. Thank you much. Success Charles01 (talk) 07:19, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Charles01, Thanks for replying here. I'll review in more detail, and I appreciate the feedback. We'll see if anything comes from the Translatathon discussion, but I wanted to get the ball rolling. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:08, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Nostrana

Extended content

I've added coords. The map "Portland downtown" seems to cover it, though I'll do another if you don't like it. I leave you to add the map to the infobox - that's your skill not mine. You've probably seen a ping to a talk page thread to someone who seems to have deleted lots of the modules that drive Oregn maps - User talk:Plastikspork#Deletions. That's a bit annoying. --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:38, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Ah. I think we're meant to be using Template:Maplink instead; new technology. Now I need to work out how that works :( --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:40, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
So that would be Map --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:45, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
But I cannot quite get it to work in the infobox right now. I'll play some more later. --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:56, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
I went down the rabbit hole at Template:Infobox restaurant and lived to tell about it. I saw the weirdest cat.... Anyway, the maps were coded wrong in the template, so there was no way they would display. I fixed the maps, and then I fixed the map caption display. – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:40, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

@Tagishsimon and Jonesey95: Thank you, both! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:45, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: - thank you; I noticed the old-style map (which, between you & me, I prefer) going up. There's meant to be new magik at Template:Infobox mapframe which afaik does away with the need to specify the old-style map. Twas that that I couldn't figure out. If you can throw any light on it, Jonesey, I'd be much obliged - for academic interest only; I'm happy to quit whilst we're ahead on Nostrana (restaurant). For instance: Eiffel Tower. I see it has coords, but I'm just not seeing how the infobox map got there :( --Tagishsimon (talk) 14:53, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Tagishsimon, I struggle with maps as well, and I feel like Wikipedia should have a fairly consistent and streamlined system by now. I never know if I'm using a locator map, the name of the map, etc. Now and then I can figure out what I'm supposed to do, but I wish this were less complicated. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:56, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Same. And I now discover I'm a dinosaur. Oh wells. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:05, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Each infobox implements maps in a slightly different way. Infobox building, for example, can use Wikidata to determine which map to show. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:46, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Jonesey95, Yes, I understand and makes sense; the lack of consistency just makes things challenging for editors less savvy w/ infoboxes and maps. :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:50, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi. I'm here just to ask if this [1] can be added to the Our Planet page. If so, where should I put it at? Opening a new section about the impacts of the documentary? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tray Framework (talkcontribs) 09:11, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

dismissive edit comments

Extended content

I am bothered by your comments along the line of "removing similar low quality image", reverting with comment such as "it was better" as projects an assertion of inferiority against others and superiority of yourself. Most recently, in this edit. I am not the only who voiced concerns of your apparent superiority attitude as seen here. When editing on articles in which you worked on or created, the interaction makes me feel as if you are exhibiting a sense of ownership on those articles. In my actual opinion, I believe the composition of the main photo in the article in question is quite poor, but that is my opinion and it would be uncivil for me to remove it with a remark like yours. Graywalls (talk) 14:44, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

Graywalls, By all means, please ask editors on the article's talk page if they want to keep the low quality image of Embers. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:50, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
Another Believer, this comment is regarding your dismissive comments and editorial decisions that seems to be overtly influenced by your subjective value, as well as a sense of territorial ownership vibe I am getting form working on articles in which you're involved in. This is why I am posting this on your talk page, because of your attitude that I see as marginalizing. Graywalls (talk) 14:54, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
Please... ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:54, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
The other photos you proclaim as superior quality are of course, taken by none other than you; and since they're from 2018, they fail to show the changes proposed in media coverage didn't come through. Who are you to assert your pictures are better than mine? More pleasing to the eyes of Another Believer is not the evaluative criteria.Graywalls (talk) 16:18, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
I'm not commenting further. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:19, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

Characters

I know tweets aren't ideal sources, and we should try to find media coverage that repeats the statement instead of citing the tweet itself, but Ru has actually personally tweeted that fictional characters aren't permissible due to copyright. Bearcat (talk) 21:15, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

Bearcat, Yeah, I never doubted you're right, and in hindsight this makes total sense, but I never recognized this rule until you added to the article. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:19, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Another Believer. I've noticed that you have worked on Portland-related articles in the past, and was hoping that you could offer some help with this article. I scheduled it for a future TFL appearance, but just noticed that one of the entries in the table has a failed verification tag. It appears that at least one of the sources lists a different height than we do, which may be why the tag was placed there. Would you mind taking a minute to look at this and see if we need to fix the entry in question? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Giants2008 (Talk) 00:12, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Giants2008, Hey! I reviewed the sources and agree, the height is not confirmed as 269 feet, if that's the reason the tag is present. I'm less familiar with this article, but I've posted a note on the article's talk page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:22, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Portland bridges

Just wondering if it would be better to redirect Sullivan's Crossing and Flanders Crossing into I-84 and I-405, respectively, until they're actually built. It's fairly rare for a "normal" freeway bridge to have its own standalone article, and I've only seen Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge as an exception to this. SounderBruce 02:10, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

SounderBruce, Hey! I assumed these were appropriate stubs and there would be enough coverage about these projects for articles longterm, but if you feel strongly you can redirect. You certainly know more about infrastructure standards, and I'll keep these on my radar for future development. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:47, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
I've already loaded the Sullivan's Crossing content into Interstate 84 in Oregon#Banfield Freeway, and will do the same for Flanders Crossing (along with turning them into redirects). SounderBruce 02:58, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Hey, could you help out?

Extended content

Hey, you have a big interest in art. Would you be able to help out with ME!? It's a mural in The Gulch, Nashville, Tennessee, that at least three local news outlets are reporting is connected to Taylor Swift's April 26 announcement. If it turns out to be nothing, I'm willing to have it deleted/moved to my userspace. Anything you can do/add would be cool. Ss112 15:35, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Like, if it turns out to be the song title, we can change it. Thanks for adding the infobox! Ss112 15:39, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
I'll take a look! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:40, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for helping out, I really appreciate it. Do you think Me! should be redirected there? Some were saying it could be an acronym, so I wanted to be encompassing/it could be moved elsewhere later. As there doesn't really appear to be anything titled "Me!" with an exclamation mark at the disambig. If you think so, could you retarget it? Ss112 15:51, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Ss112, I can't recall if punctuation and/or caps are enough w/r/t disambiguation. It's possible ME! should be moved to ME! (mural). I'm not sure. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:52, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Maybe post a note on the disambiguation talk page, or share a request a WikiProject Disambiguation? ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:54, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
That's definitely a possibility, if all it turns out to be is a mural! Hahaha. That's the problem with current events, I suppose. Ss112 15:54, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Ss112, Yup, sounds like we should know soon, though. I assume this is an album announcement? ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:55, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Honestly, nobody's really sure. There's speculation on Twitter and music forums about everything from a lead single and album to an Instagram filter. I can't imagine the disappointment of these hundreds of people gathered there if the mural actually turns out to be for the NFL Draft and nothing to do with Taylor... Ss112 16:03, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Ss112, Ok, well keep me in the loop! Also, can I just say, you and I have not always seen eye to eye, so I like when we can collaborate and work well together. Let's try to continue this because I really love your contributions in this project. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:04, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Hey! Sent you an email on this, but I'll also say here: Taylor said she commissioned the artwork. However, it being a song title is still unconfirmed. If it does end up being a song title, would you help transform it into an article about that? Ss112

@Ss112: Seems appropriate to convert the page if needed. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:31, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Another editor, MaranoFan, is now trying to start a separate article about the song when I originally intended this article to be about whatever Taylor was going to do, a mural, a song, whatever, as I said to you above. Do you mind weighing in with your thoughts? Ss112 18:02, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Snatch Game requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

--woodensuperman 14:55, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Yawn. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:58, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
I saw your ping and I was about to respond on the article's talk page, but then suddenly the page was gone. I would have argued against deletion as I agree that the segment is absolutely noteworthy enough to have its own article. While I think the article could have continued to be improved to include more secondary coverage and demonstrate Snatch Game's cultural impact (and we editors were working towards doing so), there was no reason in my opinion to delete it altogether. Incredibly disappointing. Yompi20 (talk) 15:46, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
Yompi20, The page has been restored and I've asked to have the talk page restored as well. Feel free to comment when you're ready. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:48, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

Extended content

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
  • Wales Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
  • Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
  • Kingdom of Prussia Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Chicago Barkeep49 with six GAs, United States Ceranthor, England Lee Vilenski, and Saskatchewan Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and Denmark MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

I'm thinking of putting the above album, which you created over a decade ago, up for deletion – I can't see how it passes GNG in any way, it didn't even appear to make the top 100 of the UK Compilations chart. Would you have any objections? Richard3120 (talk) 23:27, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Richard3120, Nope! I went ahead and PRODed, which I assume is better/less time-wasting than AfD, right? ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:29, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
I was thinking it could probably even have been speedied, but I was going to suggest one of the two options if you didn't mind, because I really couldn't see anybody else arguing to keep it. Richard3120 (talk) 23:31, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
Richard3120, Oh ok, whatever you think is best. Otherwise, the PROD should address. Thanks for asking! ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:34, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
It's okay, I'll just leave the PROD there as it is. I can't imagine anyone will contest it, and it'll be gone in a week. Richard3120 (talk) 23:35, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Good job! I may have more than former mayor Tom Potter from the event... I will search (yikes) for them, hopefully sooner than later... some day soon, when I can stand missing the Pacific Northwest... sigh! AHampton (talk) 16:12, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

The phrase was Latin and no misspelling. I did not know how to mark it so I left the language template [undefined] Error: {{Lang}}: no text (help) for another editor. I cannot fix it even after I read about the language template. sorry. Eschoryii (talk) 21:59, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Eschoryii, Ok, thanks, I noted your reply on the article's talk page for future reference. Hopefully someone else knows how to remove the error. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:27, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Ping

Hey, Another Believer! I got a messaged that you mentioned me here two days ago, but for the life of me I can't seem to find it. Probably not enough coffee yet. Did you want me for something? --valereee (talk) 12:42, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Valereee, Hmm, maybe I accidentally pinged when I merged the Nostrana sections above. Sorry for any confusion! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:30, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
No worries at all, just wanted to make sure you weren't asking me for something and I simply wasn't seeing it! --valereee (talk) 00:06, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

Hey, would you mind weighing in with your thoughts here Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2019 May 15? In ictu oculi nominated a redirect I made to The Space Between the Shadows, Face of the Sun, for deletion. Just thought you might want to know since you made the album article. Thanks! No Vacancy Lounge

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article No Vacancy Lounge has been completed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

I did not make the change, but you might want to consider putting Swanburg's second quote in the Reception Section in a blockquote format, it's long enough, although visually it might look odd with no text after it.

Best of luck moving the article forward.

Request to review article draft

Hi there User:Another Believer. You may recall I asked whether you would review a draft of an article about a female journalist, Sarah Jones. I think you agreed (!). Anyway, here it is. Would love any feedback, particularly whether you believe she meets the notability standard for individuals.

Extended content
Sarah Jones (journalist)

Sarah Jones is an American-born broadcast and print journalist, author, and founder of the Remembering Fallen Journalists movement, which honors journalists who have died while on assignment.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Early life and authorship

Jones grew up outside Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Albert Beckford Jones, a business executive, served as of 2019 as special advisor for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Research Competitiveness Program (RCP). Her mother, Layla, is a retired 19th century English literature professor. When Sarah Jones was 13, she wrote a cancer awareness publication, Cancer Awareness Magazine (CAM for Kids) focused on Leukemia, that was later published as a book by the American Cancer Society. The publication received approval by the American Cancer Society, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Mayo Clinic and Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York. These groups distributed it to leukemia patients and their families.[7][8] Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Lake Forest College, Illinois, and a M.A. with Merit, in 2009, from the City, University of London, England graduate school of journalism.[6]

Career

In 2018, she was hired as a television journalist by KWQC, a television station serving the Quad Cities metropolitan area in Iowa. Various media companies have employed her as a journalist, among them TRT World, Reuters Trust; VICE; Al Jazeera America; CNN; ITN’s Channel 4 News; Gulf News; BBC World Service; affiliates of NBC News and ABC News[6][9]Jones is recipient of the Best Journalist in Social Media at the Sixth Annual Shorty Awards in New York City, Times Center, in 2014.[6]Jones received an International Women’s Media Foundation fellow in 2018 and is a two time International Reporting Project Fellow (IRP.)[9] She has been a featured speaker at international conferences, including the International Women and Justice Summit in 2016.[10]

@DanDavidCook: Thanks, I'll take a closer look soon. Meanwhile, I wonder if you're willing to save your markup at Draft:Sarah Jones (journalist)? You can still make changes to the draft page before moving into the main space, or submitting for review by Articles for Creation (if you choose). ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:41, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
Sure happy to do that. Appreciate your help. DanDavidCook (talk)
Great, thanks! I'll review the draft page then and collapse the markup above. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:12, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Categorizing songs and albums

To not take up so much space in the main discussion, I will provide an overview here to attempt to understand your expectations using albums by The 1975 as an example. The 1975 have four albums and four EPs within Category:The 1975 albums.

Let's ignore the new album and the EPs for now. Based on the sourced genres of their 3 albums, I've categorized each album article in the respective categories (or the "by nationality" sub-category). Based only on those 3, what do you see as permittable within Category:The 1975 albums? Each of the three has rock or a subgenre of rock, each has pop or a subgenre of pop, each has a subgenre of R&B and each has a subgenre of electronic music, so can its parents be: Category:Rock albums by English artists, Category:Pop albums by English artists, Category:Rhythm and blues albums by English artists, and Category:Electronic albums by English artists? StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 01:40, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars, By adding categories to Category:The 1975 albums, you're implying all 8 entries are rock, pop, R&B, and electronic. You should not be categorizing Category:The 1975 albums. Instead, you should be adding categories to individual articles. So, yes, this is correct and the genre categories should be removed from the parent (artist) category. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:03, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
But if their only albums were those three under those genres (please ignore the other albums and EPs for this example). Just those 3 albums is what we are looking at and assuming they have no others.
In this example for these three albums only, I am not assuming they are all rock, electronic, R&B and pop, they actually fall under these genres with sources in the article. Thanks. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 16:55, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars, Too complicated. No genre categories needed for "The 1975 albums" when the album articles can be categorized appropriately. This is exactly why we need to stop categorizing artist categories by genre. Requires too much work and can be subjective. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:58, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
You've got your work cut out for you then. Good luck. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 17:08, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars, Yeah, no kidding. The system has been setup poorly from the start, unfortunately. I'm trying to get editors to determine what project pages need to be updated so this can be addressed longterm. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:13, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Fear in a Handful of Dust

You redirected this album article back to the artist Amon Tobin back in February – I agree it was the right thing to do at the time, given that the album's release was still more than two months away and there was no information about it at that moment. However, we now have at least five reviews from reliable sources [2] and an article, albeit a primary source interview in Clash magazine [3]. Do you think we could restore the article now? Richard3120 (talk) 15:45, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Richard3120, Sure, be bold and edit this page! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:46, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks :-) just thought I should check with you that you agree it's now notable enough for its own article. Richard3120 (talk) 15:48, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi, the list ends at 4500. I'm not sure who should be notify. Need to start a new list 4501-5000. Thanks, SWP13 (talk) 22:04, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

SWP13, Thanks for the heads up! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:33, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

>>Thanks for starting a new list. BTW, there was a numbering problem in all of the archived list. I fixed all the lists. Trial and error, and dumb luck. :) SWP13 (talk) 22:28, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

SWP13, Actually, I think they were correct before. Now there's a stray bullet point for the first entry, and the two columns have become one. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:40, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

>>I saw numbers from 1-9, and 0, repeated before. After my update, the numbers displayed correctly. Maybe there is an alternative fix. SWP13 (talk) 00:44, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
