This list seems to be dubious

I dont think this list is correct. Somebody can verify this?? Leotolstoy 12:25, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Why do you think it's dubious? In any case, the source is World Gazetteer and the figures are projections based on the 2001 Census and recent growth rates. --Polaron | Talk 13:19, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Personally I dont think Bangalore is bigger than Kolkota (I know it does not matter). Anyways Kolkota and Chennai pages show population of those cities to be 9 & 6 million respectively. So either this page is incorrect or those pages. Leotolstoy 14:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Somebody changed the Kolkata municipal corporation figure which I have fixed. The Chennai page was also using the agglomeration figure for the municipal corporation (also fixed). Thanks for pointing out the inconsistencies. --Polaron | Talk 14:35, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. I also observed that most of the other pages (Ahmedabad,[hyderabad]]) are also inconsistent. Is it possible to make verything consistent??. Leotolstoy 15:03, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Bangalore's population is more than Kolkata now, because, a number of areas, which were considered outside BMP (Bangalore Municipality), joined as BMP area. So, population of Bangalore increased, somewhat drastically. I still favor arranging the data (and rank) according to census 2001 data rather than the estimated data. Estimated data is more like original research and census data is like establish source. Isn't it?GDibyendu (talk) 19:16, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Not really, websites use projection models to determine the population of a city/town as of a certain year. This is quite similar to models used by census bureaus...they don't physically count each of the 7 million people living in a city either. I think it is fine to continue using World Gazzetteer, for purposes of standardization — these numbers are used across most, if not all India-related articles. AreJay (talk) 19:28, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Just checked that world gazetteer has published their calculation for 2008. However, against those numbers, they are showing census 2001 data, which are not matching with the data in this article. I have no idea how you guys are maintaining this list. Good luck!GDibyendu (talk) 19:23, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
The Bangalore page says the population is 6,520,000 while this page says 5,104,047. Inconsistent. Then the List of most populous metropolitan areas in India says it is 6,255,256. Umangv 13:55, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Why isn't New Delhi, the Capitol of India, on here? It's probably big enough to at least make it on the list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.117.213.88 (talk) 05:26, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Umm...it's #2 on the list. AreJay (talk) 07:06, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
I would suggest ranking the cities based on census data as obtained in 2001. Its OK to have the data from World Gazetteer, but thats not census and ranks should not made on speculative data, particularly when last census was done timely and those data are available.192.18.192.21 (talk) 05:27, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

The figures for several cities are inconsistent.

The statement above that "websites use projection models to determine the population of a city/town as of a certain year. This is quite similar to models used by census bureaus" is inconsistent with the earlier statement "Bangalore's population is more than Kolkata now, because, a number of areas, which were considered outside BMP (Bangalore Municipality), joined as BMP area. So, population of Bangalore increased, somewhat drastically." as it is almost impossible for anyone to keep track of the area changes of the cities in the country, even for the important ones.

New Delhi (New Delhi Municipal Council) is not in the list because it is a small city. It is the Delhi Municipal Corporation that occupies most of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

There is also a terrible mistake. Visakhapatnam doesn't even figure among the million plus cities(not UAs) of India in 2001 while it is shown to have 2.5 million people

I would agree that ranks should not be based on speculative data, however scientific they may be.

This list doesn't seem to be complete. There are many non-borderline (1 mn.) cities missing. Referring to Status of Indian cities, with valid relevant references, seems to be a better idea. -AltruismT a l k - Contribs. 06:03, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Meerut

There is terrible mistake in population of Meerut .Meerut is bigger than cities like Ghaziabad,Faridabad,Rajkot,Pimpri and these cities are not in top 30 also.Meerut Metropolitan Area is 16 largest so how can it be possible that the city is 26 largest. Its population is about 20 lacs but here it is shown just 14 lacs .This is a terrible mistake.Meerut is 16 largest city of India. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.184.192.230 (talk) 09:59, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Obsolete areas still mentioned in this list

Some of the towns in this list, such as Dasarahalli and Kukatpally are no longer independent towns as they have been merged into the Greater Bangalore and Greater Hyderabad municipal limits, respectively. The list needs to be updated to reflect these changes. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 05:50, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Population of Jamshedpur

The list is faulty. The population of Jamshedpur quoted here is just 677942 in 2010 whereas it was 1,271,441 accoding to census of india. Now it is near 15 lakhs. The List as well as its refernce world gazzeter is incorrect.Kindly rectify the list or merge with List of most populous metropolitan areas in India.--Devx101 (talk) 09:45, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Rationale

What is rationale of creating this article it shows population of cities and not metropolitan areas. it shows Mumbai as mumbai, thane, navi mumbai and more.we all know that this all are part of the same city mumbai don't we. The Divisons are only because they are managed by different civic bodies it makes sense only from administrative point of view and not as a common general sense.

Kindly merge with List of most populous metropolitan areas in India. --Devx101 (talk) 09:45, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

CityMayors is verifiable but is not reliable. For example, their city populations are not for the core cities as metropolitan populations are also available on that page. Notable example are Buenos Aires, Manila, and Bangkok. This link which has similarities to the UN's data, List of urban agglomerations by population (United Nations) have way below average figures for cities like Jakarta and Seoul which some other sources like CityPopulation, World Gazatteer, Demographia or the governments of Seoul and Jakarta put their cities at a much higher population. Though these are for metropolitan areas, agglomerations have similar data. The last census according to Census of India does not even put the population at 5.2 million. Actually, the one listed here only has a difference of about 50 people. Please present these reliable sources. Please note that sources such as Mongobay or About.com are generally not considered reliable sources to use. Elockid (Talk) 17:35, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Kochi ??

There has been an apparent mistake in the world gazetteer statistical listing (which is used as the main source for this article) about Kochi;.(see [1] #189). "citypopulation.de" gives a 2001 population estimate of "1,355,972" for Kochi agglomerate. It is a well known fact that Kochi ranks among the top 15-20 cities of India. Kochi must not be left out just because world gazetteer made a mistake. Thanks. Arjun024 07:39, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

No mistake. The city's population is less than 50% of that of the metro which includes Ernakulam. —SpacemanSpiff 08:02, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

The cited source (world gazetteer) shows the following;

Rank City Census 1991 census 2001 calc 2010 State
189 Kochi 564,589 266,898 249,107 Kerala

for the population population to fall from 1991 to 2001, i see no credible reason. The only possible reasons i see are 1)error at world gazetteer, 2)redefinition of "Kochi"; where hitherto 2000s Ernakulam was considered part of Kochi and later not. But couldn't find such a thing anywhere. Arjun024 10:13, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

The table is purposefully mislead by few vested interests. As per 2001 Census, Kochi City has a population of 5,96,473. The official figures are mentioned here http://www.corporationofcochin.net/cdpkochi/02Demography.pdf. We must consider that the city limits was not formally expanded since 1966 and within 1966 limits, if the population is above 5 lakhs, surely it cannot be recorded in 182 list. Kindly revise it.- Arun Varma 7:30, 26 September 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arunvarmaother (talkcontribs)

The population of Kochi city is 596473 (2001) according the GOI Census site. The same is reflected in the official site of Corporation of Cochin ([2] and [3]). Hence, I am updating the table accordingly. Moreover, there seems to be a mistake in the world-gazetteer. It is shown that the population of Kochi was 564,589 in 1991 and 266,898 in 2001 and predicted 249,107 in 2010. A decreasing population in an Indian city!!!! UNBELIEVABLE !! So, changing the list according to the GoI census information. Cheers, -- Rajith Mohan (Talk to me..) 07:29, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Many wrong details

Population of mangalore as per 2001 censes [4] is 5,39,387 here it is 399,000 RNM —Preceding unsigned comment added by Neinsun (talkcontribs) 07:29, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Based on the city website city statistics, the population is 419,306. There is no estimate year though. The 399,000 number looks more close related to the municipal corporation data than the census data (assuming that the 419000 number is a more recent that 2001). Most reliable predictions I've seen have shown an increase in population either by natural increase, annexation or both. A 20% drop seems unlikely. There are multiple definitions of cities. The link provided could be based on a definition that's just not the municipal corporation. Elockid (Talk) 21:04, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Visakhapatnam population is grossly understated.

According to 2001 india census the population is 1,345,938.

check the link from census india. http://censusindia.gov.in/towns/ap_towns.pdf

If you add the metro area that's another 949,000 per census in 2001.

check the below link per census india http://web.archive.org/web/20070927201121/http://www.censusindia.net/results/data/apd_uatowns.PDF

Total visakhapatnam population was 2.3 million in 2001.

2011 estimated is above 4.0 million as many areas are included and made into greater vishakapatnam under single administration.

Visakhapatnam should be ranking within 10 largest cities of india by many accounts not 37 as stated in your list.

please correct.

Population in Kanpur

The information presented for Kanpur is incorrect. In reality, Kanpur is a combination of two districts, named Kanpur Nagar District and Kanpur Dehat District. This information can be verified at this page: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kanpur

The population of Kanpur written in the list counts Kanpur Nagar District only. This is a terrible mistake. Kanpur should be put at number 5th. Population in 2009 is 4 864 674.

In order to be able to draw comparisons, we have to use the same base year, and same source (The Indian Census) for all entries in the list. - Arjayay (talk) 10:56, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Population in Delhi

It says here that in the 2001 census the population of Delhi was 9,879,172. But in the term Delhi it says it was 13,782,976. Which one is correct? 217.132.163.171 (talk) 08:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

== Pune's PMC's populatin is 3,124,458 only, where as including 17 lac of Pimpri-Chinchwad it's 50 lac in 2011. where as on your website for 2001 it's mentioned of PMC only and 2011 incl PCMC, so Growth showing wrong percentage. Here 50 Lac is mentioned as Pune's population which includes PMC and PCMC Pimpri-Chinchwad need to mention else people are adding Pune 50 lac + Pimpri-Chinchwad 17 lac which is wrong. == Here 50 Lac is mentioned as Pune's population which includes PMC and PCMC Pimpri-Chinchwad need to mention else people are adding Pune 50 lac + Pimpri-Chinchwad 17 lac which is wrong. Pune Municipal Corporation 's Population is around 33 lac and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation population is 17 lac which totals 50 Lac not PMC alone 50 lac and PCMC 17 Lac in addition. Please correct it.

Actual is it's grown from 2,538,473 to 3,124,458 if alone PMC(Pune Municipal Corp.) Source: PMC's official website :http://www.punecorporation.org/informpdf/Census_2011/Census_2011_DATA.pdf http://www.punecorporation.org/ http://www.census2011.co.in/census/city/375-pune.html

it's not mentioned about Population of Pune(*inclusive of Pimpri-Chinchwad) as people feel it's 50 lac as PMCs population + 17 lac as PCMCs so total is 67 Lac as Pune Metropolitan's population

Here Pune's population is shown as 50 Lac, which Includes PCMC(Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation) Population which is 17 lac as PMC Pune Municipal Population is around 32-33 Lac as per census 2011. Hence PMC 33 Lac + PCMC 17 Lac is 50 Lac. As you didn't mentioned Pune(*incl PCMC) people feel it's 50 lac as PMCs population + 17 lac as PCMC so total is 67 Lac as Pune Metropolitan's population. Actual growth of Pune(PMC only) is from 2,538,473 to 3,124,458 where as on your website in 2001 you mentioned population of PMC where as in 2011 it's total of Pune+Pimpri-Chinchwad which is misleading

PMC= Pune Municipal Corporation PCMC= Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Coroporation

Pune's urban / metropolitan population with urban agglomeration is 5,049,968 which include PCMC(Pimpri-Chinchwad) and KCB+PCB+DCB+TDM+DM etc, please correct it as people totals for 2011 like 50 Lac+ 17 Lac =67 Lac.

It's mentioned on Wiki on this page that in 2011 Pune's population is 2,538,473 without including PCMC(Pimpri-Chinchwad) where as in 2011 it is 5,049,968 which is including PCMC(Pimpri-Chinchwad) which is sense less. People feels after reading that Pune's population is grown from 2,538,473 to 5,049,968 during 2001-2011 where as actual is it's grown from 2,538,473 to 3,124,458 if alone PMC(Pune Municipal Corp.) Requested move 16 August 2015

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: moved to List of cities in India by population, which is consistent with other countries and seemed to be agreed on by two commenters here and wasn't oppposed by a third. I'd also recommend List of cities and towns in India by population be taken to RM as there seemed to be some agreement that this article should only cover towns now – List of towns in India by population seems like a reasonable title. I'd also suggest List of million-plus urban agglomerations in India could do with an RM, at least firstly because "million-plus" means nothing if you don't have something like "population" after it – I'd recommend a simple title of List of urban agglomerations in India by population and if you are concerned people will start adding smaller urban agglomerations, make it clear the scope of the page is only for urban agglomerations with a population greater than X. Jenks24 (talk) 11:40, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

List of most populous cities in IndiaList of million-plus cities in India – as per its related article name List of million-plus urban agglomerations in India and also the page was earlier confined only to 46 metro cities, i.e., cities > 1,000,000 population. Users were adding all cities list here and it got expanded to over 200, those are already in another page named List of cities and towns in India by population, in which the details of the cities with population more than 1,000,000 are mentioned. Vin09 (talk) 08:44, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

  • Going ahead to comment on it here, why phrase it generically as "proper referencing"? Shouldn't you simply insist it be based on either the most recent Indian census or some official update by India's statistics bureau? Myself, I'm not sure the treatment at List of cities and towns in India by population is a good way to go. They claim there's a source at the top of the page but individual figures are going to get edited... and look like they have proper referencing. — LlywelynII 11:00, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
@Human3015: I got your point. List of million-plus urban agglomerations in India are totally different, the urban agglomerations need a separate one. As per census 2011, A city is defined as the settlement with 100,000 and more. All those listings are in List of cities and towns in India by population. Then this page is about most populous that means metro kind of cities. There are 46 metro cities in India. Mentioning all upto 200 are ok, but most populous isn't justified as a city with 1lakh and above needs entry here, then it is not a most populous one and all cities needs to be entered. If it is required, I'll definitely revert the concerned edit which you specified.--Vin09 (talk) 08:37, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
  • As per your request I've restored the edit. If it is to be kept then the list may be limited to Metro Cities or Top 50 or 100 cities so that they are Most populous and every city entry need not be added which has mention in another page. Any comments.--Vin09 (talk) 08:45, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
I have already said that there is featured list List of United States cities by population which includes 295 cities and as per my knowledge there is no list for "Million plus cities of USA". We look "featured articles" on same subject as ideal article for improving other articles. I think there should not be any question on this list as this list rightly shows most populous cities of India, "most populous" doesn't mean it should be "metro", this list is just about "most populous" among thousands of cities of India. There should not be any question on "List of cities and towns of India" as this list have scope of inclusion of all thousands of towns of India. Only question should be raise about 'Million plus cities OF India" because that we can simply write in "Most populous cities of India' (means in this list). But for just "trivia" we can keep that list separate. But I don't think any reformation is needed for this list, only question remain how many cities should this article contain, there are about 500 cities in India which have population 100,000 or more. But we can restrict this list to 250, or cities having population around 200,000. Other nations have included cities upto 100,000 in such list because they have less population but in case of India we can reduce the number, so either can have 500 cities or 200-250 cities. Current version of this article is OK. --Human3015Send WikiLove  09:07, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
@Human3015: Fine, thanks for featured article info.--Vin09 (talk) 09:32, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
@Vin09: I think matter is cleared to you, there is no much use of this RfC now, still we can look for more comments, I think we should try to make this list featured list or good list. That task will not be much tough as this is a list class page, descriptive articles are usually tough task for becoming "good article" or "featured article". I will do some work on this list later. We should follow same kind of featured list related to USA.--Human3015Send WikiLove  09:51, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
  • Comment. Above, one editor noted:
List of cities and towns in India by population: ... we can't merge List of most populous cities in India in this list which is in alphabetical order and can include any town of India.
This point is badly taken. There is absolutely no need for separate alphabetical and numerical pages. Wikipedia's tables can sort them both on the same page. Similarly, there's no need for separate "population" and "big population" pages. The larger cities will go to the top of the page once it's sorted by population. [It's debatable whether urbanized areas deserve a separate page. It could certainly be argued, but there's not really any useful reason to FORK such information from the city page. Just provide the information in a separate column as at List of cities in China by population.] — LlywelynII 10:55, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
@LlywelynII: List of cities and towns in India by population deals with every settlement of India, there is mention of settlement as low as population 4,000 in that article, any village can be mentioned in that article, there are 600,000 villages in India, so scope of that article is very big if we want to improve that article. While we do need separate article on cities as every country has such kind of article, List of cities in China by population and List of United States cities by population. We can rename this list as List of cities in India by population. And I agree on there is no need of List of million-plus urban agglomerations in India. But we really can't merge this list to List of cities and towns in India by population because scope of both lists is different, but we can rename that list to List of settlements in India by population. --Human3015Send WikiLove  11:33, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
@Human3015: Nope. The WP:SCOPE of List of cities and towns in India by population already includes the scope of this one. I do support having an article renamed List of cities in India by population. Maybe the other one could have its scope restricted to listing India's villages and settlements below X population. That's much more useful than a dozen articles on the high-population settlements. — LlywelynII 12:01, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
Yes, we can restrict other article to small villages and small towns. --Human3015Send WikiLove  12:15, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
In my view, confining the other article Towns and villages is a good move, but villages need not be mentioned. It can be List of towns in India by population. As villages means there are n number of them.--Vin09 (talk) 12:19, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Which referencee we need to follow for adding cities entries? As I see is a PROVISIONAL POULATION. Census of India website isn't working for searching a city population which is final. THIS NEW REFERENCE may help. I've checked this for AP state which are nothing but census search box data. Also, now the page List of cities in India by population is moved as a new title, so there will be many cities to be added. General comment: the links on the census website(s) are constantly moving and/or dying (sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently). It has a humungous amount of useful information, but it's got to be the most finicky website I have come across. So I highly recommend that if you use a census link as a source, save the page and provide a link to the archived version too (see also WP:WEBCITE). Chennai and Hyderabad Population

As per 2011 census chennai population was 4,646,732, post expansion of city limits we can understand it gone to 6,727,000. But i do not understand why there are frequent modification of the same citing a news article which depicts population as 7,088,000 which is not reliable. Similarly , there is a news article which claims hyderabad population to be 7,170,545 . The same is being reverted immediately by some editors. But i could see no proper observation for Chennai and the false data is remaining on wikipedia for many days which causes loss to integrity and availability of data. please provide your inputs and take it forward user:Vin09 LovSLif 07:08, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Proposed new format

This list is a complete mess.
The second column clearly states "Population (2011)" and cites Census India, however many of the figures in that column are neither 2011, nor Census India figures.
Editors appear to be desperate to find more recent, larger, figures to improve the ranking of "their" city. This means the table is not comparable - you cannot compare a 2016 figure with a 2011 figure, especially when it is unclear which year the cited figures are from.
I suggest the following:-

- Column 2 is reverted to the real census 2011 figures, and if possible is locked so these figures cannot be altered. There is no valid reason to alter an accurate, historic figure
- Two more columns are included, one for more recent figures which need to be cited to a reliable source, the other column for the year of that update. This allows more recent figures to be added, and clearly identifies which year the figures relate to, allowing sensible comparisons to be drawn.

The one problem I foresee is that, as, currently, the tables are subdivided into rankings, e.g. 1-25, people will want to move "their" city higher up the rankings possibly into the next table.
Do the tables need to be subdivided?
If you are looking for a city, one table can be sorted alphabetically and that city easily found, whereas currently 12 tables need to be searched (presumably 20-25 tables if the 223 "Missing" cities are added).
The lack of subdivision would allow all cities to be searched for alphabetically, or by "2001", "2011" or the "latest" figures. - Arjayay (talk) 07:41, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

About the format, it was very hard for adding entries in a large list, so it was split into shorter ones. When we want to add new entry or edit a current one, it is very hard. That's the reason it was shortened.--Vin09(talk) 07:57, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
OK - understood - As I said this is the problem I foresee (there may be others)
So how can we overcome this without people constantly changing the lists? Use the 2011 census figures to "force" the lists as in "1-25 as per the 2011 Census"
And if this problem can be overcome, do people agree with the main suggestion? - Arjayay (talk) 08:17, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
I've started adding correct info in the first 25 cities. Only problem was with chennai's population. Rest all have the reference. Some cities may have expanded after the census, but still the merged villages possess 2011 census figures, so the new city which follows the census 2011 calculation can be added. There some others which do not have government source, they should be avoided (assumptive figures).--Vin09(talk) 09:46, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Separate ref column for 1 to 25

@Vin09: Look at List_of_cities_in_India_by_population#1_to_25. Why is there a need by a separate ref section for some entries when there's the main ref to 2011 census.gov.in? There's thus a slight mismatch in these entries. I assume these "newer" figures from the refs provide an unofficial more up-to-date count, but why use them instead of the main 2011 census? Ugog Nizdast (talk) 11:20, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Some of the nearby agglomerations are merged. These merged area population is of 2011 only. The summed one is also reflecting 2011. Only if they add recent year population then that's a wrong entry. Earlier these discussions were already held. This was the conclusion we derived. As long as they are official figures not a problem, others needs to be removed.--Vin09(talk) 07:26, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
@Vin09: I just found this: /Archive_1#Proposed_new_format, where Arjayay raised a similar issue. All I understand from what you're saying is that some areas are merged? Then shouldn't that be mentioned in a note or something? Not sure whether you're agreeing or disagreeing with me.
Let's look at Mumbai for instance, it's mentioned 12,442,373 which is summed up from that ref ".citypopulation.de" (its reliability?) from it's Mumbai + Suburban entries; it further says those figures are from the respecitve government sites. The 2011 census lists Greater Mumbai (M Corp.) as 12,478,447. This doesn't look like a case of any merging taking place, why is that ref preferred over the Census? If the remaining entries follow the same pattern, I don't see why they shouldn't be reverted back to their census figures. Which of them involve the case of agglomerations being merged? Ugog Nizdast (talk) 18:49, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
You are right, that applies to Hyderabad and Chennai articles which are officially accepted. May not be in Mumbai, can revert it to census if you want.--Vin09(talk) 05:56, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
There's a note for Visakhapatnam as well saying changes happened in 2012. So if these changes happened post-2011, then it would be erroneous on our part to report it in the "2011" column figures for the Census. From Chennai#Demographics, it said the change happened after the census as well. I couldn't find any mention of administration changes at Hyderabad#Demographics. So I say, we revert all the entries to 2011 figures; for Chennai and Visakhapatnam add a note explaining those changes and the newer summed-up figure. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 17:30, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Though they happened after 2011, the merged municipalities separately have 2011 census. Just they have summed up. Earlier User:Vensatry explained it in earlier posts. They still reflect 2011 census. Only, if they add latest figures or increased population, then it is wrong. For example, XYZ has a population of 100, post merger of ABC with a population of 50, makes it 150. But not present figure of 250+. As census 2011 was the only latest counting, its nothing wrong in those figures, they still reflect 2011. I got your point also, but we are following it with this format. For this, we can add note.--Vin09(talk) 09:17, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

As of now, I Support your opinion. I read Talk:List_of_cities_in_India_by_population/Archive_1#Proposed_new_format lately. But you correct some, I'll get an idea. Involve other editors also.--Vin09(talk) 09:32, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Here's a sample of the two affected columns:
City, Population (2011)[2]
Chennai, 4,681,087[a]

Notes

  1. ^ The city's limits were expanded later in 2011 and its population reached 7,088,000[3] with Chennai Municipal Corporation being renamed as Greater Chennai Corporation.
The wording could be changed with, as you said, stating that the figure didn't actually increase but is re-summed up, if that isn't clear enough already. Right now, all I know of is Chennai and Visakhapatnam (it's current note doesn't mention the figure, as per this draft's format). If you have the refs for these affected cities, it would be great if you did this part rather than me searching for them from the beginning. I'll do the remaining. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 15:37, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
@Vin09: and @Ugog Nizdast: Friends, I don't know whether you know this already or not that Census of India released two figures for 2011 for each entity (country/ state/ city/ urban agglomeration) except towns and villages of less than 100,000 population; for latter only final results got released. The two figures for others were: the provisional results (released in 2011) and the final results (released in somewhere mid 2015). Both these figures differ from each other marginally, e.g. for Greater Mumbai (M Corp.), these are 12,478,447 (provisional) and 12,442,373 (final) and for Kota (M. Corp.), 1,001,365 (provisional) and 1,001,694 (final), i.e. final figures can be slightly less or more than provisional figures. Both are official data of census. In fact, religion data on 2011 census released in September 2015 is based on final figures. Citypopulation.de's 2011 figures are based on final results of census and not those of provisional ones. Most of the cities in this Wiki list contain provisional census figures which have to be updated to final census figures. Final figures have been updated for some of these (e.g. for those ranking among top 25 and others like Kota) with separate sources for each. Since most city related official data of final census results can be found only in downloadable excel files and district census handbooks (these are for individual states and districts; i.e. no common source listing all cities of all states like the provisional results had), Citypopulation.de's state-wise city data can be used as a source common to all cities of a particular state. Its entire data is derived from official final data of census and it clearly acknowledges the source of information as Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner (web) i.e. the official site of Census of India. Please forgive me for any of the typo(s) if you found some. Vibhss (talk) 18:55, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
@Vibhss: You are absolutely right. We'll work on it. As you said earlier, these lists should be based on 2011 or updated if they have urban agglomeration merged with proper source. The users are changing them continuously, first we need tackle that, Chennai is the main row. Check its population and needs correction.--Vin09(talk) 05:32, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Many Cities Missing

According to Census 2011 website, there are 640 districts in the nation. This article has 300. There are many cities with more population than 1,00,000 missing from this list. For eg: Hisar, a district in the state of Haryana with a population of a million is missing from the list. Change Vellore population of 2011 to 504079, as it is the actual population of the city within the boundaries after expansion and it is not the urban area number. @Vellorekaaran: I couldn't see any date/year in this source. When did the expansion happen? The population data should be from 2011 census as per the article table. [2] If you argue that it includes OG, then here is another figure that is already on a link mentioned in the page itself. 752,490 is the figure given for Thiruvananthapuram Mcorp. [3] Please provide source for the current information in the page. 99.232.0.199 (talk) 18:10, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

The current number for Thiruvananthapuram is wrong, should be 752,490 as per the 2011 source (M. Corp) [8], but certainly not what is being done here. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:39, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
@Fylindfotberserk:- Thank you. So, are you gonna correct 2011 figures? I am guessing you can edit this. Btw, I am not sure on the other link with revisions.

I can edit this, but it is tedious. I'll try to do it later, possibly tommorrow or the day after, unless somebody else corrects it . - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 19:15, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. Looks like no one else want to edit this so far :) :@Arjayay: Do you wanna edit Thiruvananthapuram 2011 population to 752,490 and re-arrange based on the discussion above? 99.232.0.199 (talk) 13:05, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Done for Thiruvananthapuram - 31 others need reverting to the census figures, not other claims, but this is very time consuming.
As can be seen in the archives, I suggested that the page be corrected and locked, but got little support. Maybe we could agree that for the 2021 census - if that is held - Arjayay (talk) 14:29, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Arjayay, coincidently, I was also trying to update it and got an edit conflict . - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:35, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Arjayay , part of the reason is, for Trivandrum - outgrowths newly added to Mcorp in 2010 was not tallied or something in the census document -2011. LSG didnt get this updated in the census document as well. MCorp officially considers 9,57,730 as 2011 population. Anyhow, it should get corrected in 2021 census.148.9.24.36 (talk) 15:48, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Add City

Add Samastipur in list there population is 2,53,136. It is also a Municipal Corporation. This City in Bihar,India Dheerajj.12 (talk) 09:56, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Incorrect information

Population of Vadodara is completely inflated for some reason. Nowhere has this figure been mentioned in the census records or in the municipal corporation records. Please recheck the specific column for the city in the sources. As per the census of 2011, population was 1666703 and as per current estimates available on the municipal corporation website it is around 2240522 - https://vmc.gov.in/ 116.74.79.17 (talk) 14:42, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Does not seem correct, indeed. Changed it. Ennomien (talk) 21:58, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
Thanks but seems like someone changed it again. There is simply no basis for this inflated number in records of the census, state government or municipal coporation. Census 2011 data being misrepresented solely for one city 116.74.79.17 (talk) 05:31, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
Attaching the 2001 census data here which mentions the city population as 14,11,228 which was then in the range of 17,00,000 approximately during 2011 which is being shown as 2001 instead. The jump to the false figure of 35,00,000 is simply not possible. http://tcpo.gov.in/sites/default/files/TCPO/REPORTS/REPORTS%20SMD/REPORT14-AREACPOPULATIONANDDENSITYOFCITIESANDTOWNSOFINDIA-2001.pdf 116.74.79.17 (talk) 05:34, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
Changed it back. Ennomien (talk) 10:22, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

Misinformation

The source cited itself mentions Vadodara population as 1666703 on page 9 for the 2011 census yet an inflated figure of 3552371 is repeatedly updated without any basis which is also the same for Vadodara Urban agglomeration in the list pertaining to that. How can a city and urban agglomeration have the same population? Clearly goes against the definition yet facts and official data is not accepted for some reason 116.74.79.17 (talk) 05:43, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Unsourced and poorly-sourced population changes

This article has been semi-protected since March 2014, but the article has turned into a train wreck despite that. The article states that population data is from the 2001 Census of India and the 2011 Census of India. Unfortunately, the population data has been relentlessly modified using a combination of unsourced, poorly-sourced, and incorrect numbers.

I ended up restoring an intermediate version of the city list from the article history and I am now working my way through the list so the numbers match the 2011 census data.

Mistakes in the table seem to be coming from a variety of sources including:

  • Some 2001 population numbers are from the 2001 census while others come from the 2011 census which takes into account city boundary changes. For example, Bangalore increased in size. Consistently using the 2011 census seems like the way to go because it allows for meaningful comparisons between the 2001 and 2011 numbers. Otherwise, it would look like some cities experienced unrealistic population growth.
  • Some population numbers have been for the U.A. rather than municipal corporation. This article does not list U.A. sizes.
  • Some population numbers are from provisional 2011 census results. There's a PDF of the provisional results used by many articles. These need to be replaced with the final 2011 numbers.
  • Some population numbers have been updated to include additional areas merged into a city. Coimbatore is one example. I think this is bordering on WP:SYNTH in the absence of official totals. I think it's best to add a footnote for these cases and wait for the 2021 census to be completed, but if there's a reliable source with both 2001 and 2011 numbers for a resized city, we could consider it.
  • And some seem to be more recent estimates. If we can find a reliable and authoritative estimation for city sizes, I think we should discuss adding a new column, but I would like to finish fixing the table first.
