Removed sentence about favorability rankings

I removed the sentence "Although he ended his term with low approval ratings, public opinion of him has increased since his term ended." as the attached reference did not appear to support this claim. GWB's favorability rankings appear (according to this ref) to have maintained an overall consistency since he left office - while seeing a slight uptick it has leveled back to where it has been. I've removed this until another reference can be found that more clearly states that public opinion has increased since the end of his term. Garchy (talk) 15:27, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Quality of the article

This article has photos, but I'm uncertain whether removing some photos would affect the article. I can do without a photo of Bush with Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi and a 2008 photo of him with an Indian foreign minister. I added File:Bush meets Pranab Mukherjee.jpg to India–United States relations but haven't removed it yet from bio.

Lots of news articles are used as inline references. I've not seen one book used as a source yet. Subpages related to George Jr. already exist, yet there are so many (or too many) details about his Presidency and policies. --George Ho (talk) 00:51, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Article on Bush twins - merge or restore?

I have closed a lengthy discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2017 January 11#Jenna and Barbara Bush regarding a former article and a series of redirects concerning George W. Bush's twin daughters. The former article and redirects now point to the Family and personal life section of this article. There has been some discussion about the content of the former article, whether it would be appropriate to restore and improve that article, or use some of its content to merge into this article. I am opening this discussion to gather opinions of editors familiar with this topic.

For the content of the former article, please see this revision, or this one restored more recently for the RfD discussion. There is also old discussion at Talk:Jenna and Barbara Bush.

Yale University

"He attended Yale University (coincidentally located at his place of birth in New Haven, Connecticut) from 1964 to 1968" It's not coincidental. He was born during his father's college years attended Yale, and his father attended Yale because his father, Prescott, attended Yale. It's not a coincidence; rather, an entrenched legacy of the Bush family attending Yale University. Please remove the parenthetical.128.135.98.153 (talk) 22:49, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

He was banned from entering Venezuela like Cheney [2]. Maybe that can be added as a category Category:Excluded people. --166qq (talk) 18:39, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
Category:Excluded people is very much a non-defining category here (as are Category:American people convicted of war crimes and Category:People convicted in absentia for reasons given by Amory above). I'm sure it's common that many former world leaders are excluded from countries they had poor relations with - countries that they would never have any intentions of visiting anyway. At best it is an empty symbolic act and it is entirely irrelevant in the context of a biography of a world leader. Deli nk (talk) 19:02, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

War crimes

Bush has also been accused of war crimes after the Iraq invasion, including being convicted in absentia and possibilities that he may be unable to visit Europe due to fears that he could end up in the International Criminal Court at the Hague in Netherlands.[1][2] In 2011, he cancelled his trip to Switzerland due to risks of legal action against him for "alleged torture".[3] In 2015, he was banned from entering Venezuela and accused of "committing terrorism and grave human rights violations" when he was in office.[4] Desmond Tutu has also called for him and Tony Blair to be taken to the Hague over the Iraq War and accused him of lying to get rid of Saddam Hussein.[5][6]

I’ve noticed Bush was accused of war crimes started in Iraq based off of lies. Is there anywhere in the article I can add my statement? —166qq (talk) 22:45, 2 May 2018 (UTC) 166qq (talk) 22:45, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

Reword legacy sentences of lede

I don't like the way the the last couple sentences of the lede are written. At present, the lede reads

His presidency has been ranked among the worst in historians' polls that were published in the late 2000s and 2010s. However, his favorability ratings with the public have improved significantly after leaving office

I think there needs to be some note that, while he's viewed more favorably than he was during the Obama years, he's still viewed as a well-below average president. I proposed a change to the following but was reverted:

Bush has consistently been rated as a below-average president: his presidency has been ranked among the worst in historians' polls that were published in the late 2000s and 2010s, but his favorability ratings with the public have improved after leaving office.

pbp 15:57, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Support this change
  1. pbp 15:57, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
Oppose this change
  1. The current version accurately summarizes what is in the article. Per policy, the lede should reflect and summarize the article text, not add new information, and the added text is not in the article. The only thing adding this text does is emphasize he was bad, which is already summarized by "ranked among the worst". It adds nothing. Toa Nidhiki05 02:21, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Redundant

From the lead:

"... to distinguish him from his father, George H. W. Bush, who served as the 41st president from 1989 to 1993.
Bush is the eldest son of Barbara and George H. W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States..."

Seems a bit redundant, no? 216.8.143.101 (talk) 18:45, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

216.8.143.101, thank you for raising your question on the matter of possible redundancy. I do find it to be rather redundant, and the question I have about it is whether we really should have the nicknames listed in the lead. We already have the above message, This article is about the 43rd president of the United States. For his father, the 41st president, see George H. W. Bush. We also have a brief list of nicknames that according to the lead distinguish him from the 41st president, and then we read that he is the son of GHWB. I am inclined to remove them, although I do see a need for mentioning his common nicknames. I think a better alternative would be to put a footnote next to the bolded name, George Walker Bush, that would describe his nicknames for the sake of disambiguation while still keeping the lead uncluttered. If no one objects to this idea, I will probably proceed with the change. GaɱingFørFuɲ365 20:16, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Afghanistan Invasion

This sentence should be removed:

In 2002, based on UNICEF figures, Nicholas Kristof reported that "our invasion of Afghanistan may end up saving one million lives over the next decade" as the result of improved healthcare and greater access to humanitarian aid.

It's a single source from 2002 in an OPINION column, made by a journalist, not any kind of expert in estimating death rates. It distorts the facts of the war, and I don't see any argument for why this random person's 2002 opinion is notable. AlleyRegent69 (talk) 13:07, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Lede on reception should be reworked

Although historians initially rated him as one of the worst (4th quartile), most recent ones have ranked him in the third quartile, which is below-average rather than one of the worst. Specifically, CSPAN 2017, APSA 2018, and Siena 2018 ranked him 33rd, 30th, and 33rd, respectively. Certainly below-average, but not in the worst overall tier. The lede should probably be updated to reflect this, since it primarily relies on older surveys. Toa Nidhiki05 02:52, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

As the eldest son of the dearly departed Barbara and George H. W. Bush, he is the second son of a former United States president to himself become president, with the first being John Quincy Adams, the son of John Adams. 2601:2C3:680:3310:5C84:3AB9:E708:4ACC (talk) 03:47, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Not done: We don't really use euphemisms like "dearly departed" (see: WP:EUPHEMISM), on top of "dearly" probably being a NPOV issue. Regardless, that his parents are dead I don't think is particularly pertinent information that needs to be included in the lead. Volteer1 (talk) 04:51, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

"A lead section should contain no more than four well-composed paragraphs" --WP:MOSLEAD

Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section says "As a general rule of thumb, a lead section should contain no more than four well-composed paragraphs and be carefully sourced as appropriate."

The lead of this article is far too long. I am not going to edit the page (I still have setting myself on fire as a less painful option) but could you who are working on this page please come to an agreement on a lead that is a reasonable length? --Guy Macon (talk) 13:44, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Merger proposal

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was to not merge. The events already listed in Security incidents involving George W. Bush could be expanded in addition to merging Bush shoeing incident into the page. Wow (talk) 00:00, 23 October 2021 (UTC); edited 05:26, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

The Security incidents involving George W. Bush page should be merged into the security incidents section as it is too short to warrant its own page. Furthermore, the Flight 93 incident on there has nothing to do with Bush as he was in Florida and not Washington, D.C. like Cheney was. --Wow (talk) 20:04, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

Oppose Bush’s article is already extremely long. Making it even longer would be counterproductive. DogsRNice (talk) 21:44, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

new category

I have created a new category, "Children who followed their parents as heads of state". George W. Bush fits the criteria. But Editor Drdpw feels that the article has too many categories and that this category is trivial. Many feel Wikipedia is becoming a hostile environment. I want this to be an exception. What the majority chooses will be acceptable with me. Pete unseth (talk) 14:22, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

People that hold a different opinion on a topic or question are not automatically "hostile". If you're going to lead with such a basic strawman argument, then you're kinda creating your own hostility here. ValarianB (talk) 15:25, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Sorry!! I did not in any way mean to call Drdpw hostile. I was just talking about Wikipedia in general. Trying (tho not fully successfully) to set a peaceful tone in this discussion. I will accept the view of majority with no complaints. Pete unseth (talk) 15:39, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
@Pete unseth: You might consider revising your post at Talk:John Quincy Adams as well, or even removing it altogether, so as to avoid there being multiple discussions on the subject. Drdpw (talk) 21:48, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Ok, glad that's cleared. As for the category, I believe the problem is that it is not, in Wikipedia terminology, a "defining category", in that it isn't important to group them together. Is it a notable part of Bush Jr.'s, Kim Jong-un's, and Trudeau's biographies that their fathers were also heads of state? Of course. Does a grouping together of an American neoconservative, a brutal North Korean dictator, and a rakishly handsome Canadian Prime Minister on the basis of parentage of importance or usefulness to the reader? Not so much, in my opinion. ValarianB (talk) 18:49, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Like ValarianB said, the category you created is not a defining category, and there are already numerous defining categories connected with this article. I also question how important or useful such a categorization is for the wiki, but that's beyond the scope of this discussion. Suffice it to say that, IMO, it is neither useful nor important to this page. Drdpw (talk) 21:48, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Bush Gaffe

I disagree that the gaffe is not notable. This gaffe centers around the war that defined Bush's presidency and the gaffe has been referred to as the "Freudian slip of the century" by Andrew Stroehlein, the European media director of Human Rights Watch. X-Editor (talk) 20:33, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

The gaffe doesn't "center around the war that defined Bush's presidency." The gaffe centers around the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That may be Andrew Stroehlein's personal opinion, but that on its own does not make it very notable. Try this test: in ten years, do you think anyone is going to care about Bush mixing up the names "Ukraine" and "Iraq" one time in a news interview that had zero impact on any policy decisions or actions? Do you think anyone is going to care about it in 5 years? In 1 year? In one month? It's trivia, and is going to need a lot more evidence of notability than one person's stated personal opinion. It has no notability to the life biography of George W. Bush. --OuroborosCobra (talk) 00:12, 21 May 2022 (UTC)
This gaffe, like most newsworthy events in the life of GWB, is not significant in the grand scheme of his life. This is a life biography article, not a collection point for news-of-the-day stories about what GWB says or does. It's for significant life events, and this is not one of them. That said, there is an appropriate article for this embarrassing Freudian slip to be documented – Bushism, which is dedicated to GWBs unconventional statements, phrases, Freudian slips, etc.; in fact, this incident is covered there. Drdpw (talk) 00:38, 21 May 2022 (UTC)
Fair enough. I think it makes more sense to feature in the Bushisms article. X-Editor (talk) 00:45, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

ISIS plot

Should we include the latest news of a foiled ISIS assassination plot against Bush? Sources: MSN, Bloomberg, The Hill, Forbes. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 18:12, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

No (WP:NOTNEWS). This was a scheme in the early planning stage, not an imminent threat. While newsworthy, it is not significant in the grand scheme of GWB's life. Had the planning advanced and become an imminent threat, then yes, it would have been significant and noteworthy. Drdpw (talk) 18:58, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
I say included a mention, as how can something be both "newsworthy" and "not significant"?! Mathmo Talk 18:21, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
The plot is mentioned at List of United States presidential assassination attempts and plots#George W. Bush, which is where it belongs. As it didn't progress to the point of implementation, the plot really has no place in this biographical article. Drdpw (talk) 18:55, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

“Painted many paintings” sounds horrible. This section needs reworked:

“One of his best known project is a collection of 43 painting of immigrants, titled Out of Many, One. Another painting project was Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief's Tribute To America's Warrior.” 2603:6010:3206:A41F:6836:F521:DC31:52CA (talk) 04:35, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

no WMDs were ever found in Iraq

A sentence in the lead says "He also ordered the 2003 invasion of Iraq, claiming that Saddam Hussein's regime possessed weapons of mass destruction; this led to Hussein's eventual overthrow and capture by U.S. forces."

Why is the fact there were no WMDs found in Iraq not included? This gives the assumption in the lead that there were WMDs found, which is untrue. 79.66.92.93 (talk) 12:31, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

The sentence could stand some refining, but there are limits to what we do to avoid readers inferring that which isn't stated as fact. The word claiming should be clear enough that it's not an assertion. cheers. anastrophe, an editor he is. 21:52, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
The important fact that needs to be put out there in the lead section is that he ordered the invasion based on the belief (as the article now states) that the Hussein regime possessed WMDs. The fact that no WMDs were found is not so important a fact that it needs to be included in the lead. The new wording should be clear enough that readers will pause before making the assumption there were WMDs found, as indeed they were not. Any lingering confusion about whether or not WMDs were found in Iraq would certainly be cleared up by the time a reader finishes the article.Drdpw (talk) 01:11, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

JustYourAveragePoliticsGeek, it does not appear that the official portraits of Texas governors are in the public domain. If you look at List of governors of Texas, you will see that none of the recent governors have official portraits. If you read the file talk page for the Dolph Briscoe portrait, you can find some interesting information from the Texas State Library. Cullen328 (talk) 00:11, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
theres one on https://americanhistory.si.edu/american-presidency/resources/presidents/george-w-bush but i cant find copyright JustYourAveragePoliticsGeek (talk) 21:46, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
According to the website, anything that's free to use will be tagged CC-0, and that image isn't. It says in a caption that it's from the Texas Office of the Governor, and that website says "all photographs and videos are copyrighted and may not be used without permission", so this one is a no-go, unfortunately. Edit dispute: motivation for war on terror

There is a dispute about this text in the "war on terror" section:

On September 20, Bush announced a global war on terror to a Joint Session of Congress. The Afghan Taliban regime was not forthcoming with Osama bin Laden, so Bush ordered the invasion of Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban regime.[1]

The text underlined and in purple was removed by HiLo48 and restored by Ethans1234. I removed it again because challenged statements about living persons are required to be cited inline and Ethans1234 didn't provide a citation, but instead asserted in their edit summary that this is something they know to be true, which these days I take as a red flag for unsupportable personal opinion. In a tirade on my talk page Ethans1234 insisted that the source at the end of the sentence supported this statement. The source is a transcript of Bush's September 20 address to Congress (a primary source) in which he delivered his ultimatum to the Taliban. The speech really only supports the first sentence here, the rest needs additional sourcing, which I think can be pulled from United States invasion of Afghanistan. However, the speech is already covered in the "September 11, 2001" section immediately above this, and the Afghanistan invasion is covered in the section below, so a lot of this is redundant. I suggest replacing those first two sentences with this:

In Bush's September 20 speech, he declared that "our war on terror begins with Al Qaeda, but it does not end there."[1][2] In his 2002 State of the Union address ....

Thoughts? Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:58, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

That would be simpler, to the point, and really, as much as we can say in Wikipedia voice. It was the word "so" in the original wording that triggered my edit. That implies that we know what Bush was thinking. We know what he publicly said. We know what he did. But we cannot know WHY he did it. Many have suggested he had other, unstated reasons. We don't talk about that here either. HiLo48 (talk) 23:08, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

The Taliban's "refusal" to hand over Bin Laden

"The Taliban's leader, Mullah Omar, refused to hand over bin Laden." It is worth mentioning after this sentence that the Taliban changed their mind and did offer to hand over Bin Laden later after a week of bombing under the condition that the handoff be mediated by a third country. The US refused this offer.

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2001/oct/14/afghanistan.terrorism5 LaserViking (talk) 18:41, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

That was a plea for the bombing to stop if they passed Bin Laden to a third country that would harbor him and never "come under pressure from the United States." It was also offered only by divulging intelligence to the enemy about bin laden's involvement and exposing intelligence networks. Was a political ploy at the time. Also bin laden was not in custody at the time so the credibility was already dubious at best. 2603:6000:B202:B000:B03E:4685:9E45:169B (talk) 01:15, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Additional information regarding PEPFAR in lead.

Currently there has been a recent addition to the mention of PEPFAR in the lead of the article as: "PEPFAR was vital in saving the lives of 25 million people suffering from HIV/AIDS over the course of following two decades, greatly alleviating the severity of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa". While all of that information, is of course, true, such additional information is more warranted to be mentioned in the subheading related to PEPFAR. Comparatively, Even presidents like Lyndon B. Johnson and FDR do not have additional information regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Social Security in their respective leads. Given this, the additional sentence regarding PEPFAR in the lead should probably be moved to the subheading relating to it. LosPajaros (talk) 00:58, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

I have shortened the coverage in the lede (also removing a WP:PEACOCK term) and moved some updated details down to the existing PEPFAR section.
Given the coverage in the article body and the fact that a RS is now calling it "George W. Bush’s greatest accomplishment", I think a brief mention in the intro is warranted per WP:LEDE. Regards, HaeB (talk) 04:36, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Media coverage alone does not make an event or (mis)statement notable for inclusion in a biological article. The gaffe you note has had no effect on him or the public perception of him, and so has no place in this article. Drdpw (talk) 16:07, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
And how is that decided? Maybe public perception did change? Is there a gauge of some kind? I mean, it's not like his numerous, usually comic, gaffes weren't documented, in the past mostly... with this one he's literally admitted something about one of the earliest 21st century wars that still has repercussions, and it's supposed to mean nothing? No, media coverage should absolutely be what qualifies inclusion... whole point of notability in the first place. His past comic gaffes had no implication on anything as serious as a war, so if anything. (But I noticed it's mentioned on their article, so, I guess, as long as it's linked...) 78.151.136.56 (talk) 17:39, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
