Unblock

[edit]

This user is asking that their block be reviewed:

A1Cafel (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I truly understand what I have done previously upsets someone. I understand that my past edits are not a "jail-free" card, but can act as a reference. Besides my edits here, I have also made a lot of useful contributions at zhwiki (my home wiki), which is also a proof that I can properly contribute on other Wikipedia site. I still believe there is a path for me to be unblocked, regardless the time taken. I won't mind wait for a very long time to get unblock. As said before, I'm willing to accept a stricter editing restriction if necessary. I will also accept probation from admins and other editors (particularly on tropical cyclones, which I have a strong interest) on my edits. All the best. — Preceding unsigned comment added by A1Cafel (talkcontribs) 08:55, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notes:

  • In some cases, you may not in fact be blocked, or your block has already expired. Please check the list of active blocks. If no block is listed, then you have been autoblocked by the automated anti-vandalism systems. Please remove this request and follow these instructions instead for quick attention by an administrator.
  • Please read our guide to appealing blocks to make sure that your unblock request will help your case. You may change your request at any time.
Administrator use only:

If you ask the blocking administrator to comment on this request, replace this template with the following, replacing "blocking administrator" with the name of the blocking admin:

{{Unblock on hold |1=blocking administrator |2=I truly understand what I have done previously upsets someone. I understand that my past edits are not a [[Get Out of Jail Free card|"jail-free" card]], but can act as a reference. Besides my edits here, I have also made a lot of useful contributions at zhwiki (my home wiki), which is also a proof that I can properly contribute on other Wikipedia site. If you decline the unblock request, replace this template with the following code, substituting {{subst:Decline reason here}} with a specific rationale. Leaving the decline reason unchanged will result in display of a default reason, explaining why the request was declined.

I am reviewing the unblock request and I am confused. First of all, the unblock request caught my attention because it is showing up in the category as being pending since February 2020. That would certainly be alarming, but seems to be a mistake by the bot. (Does anyone know if there's someone whose attention should be called to that?)

On the substance, I would readily agree that this user is out of chances ... except that the prior issues appear to be several years old. If there really has been no socking since 2020 or 2021, I would be more open to considering that the editor might be ready to write a new chapter. @Yamla, Bbb23, and JBW: can you help me unravel the chronology here, or share any other thoughts? Thanks, Newyorkbrad (talk) 13:36, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The unblock request was made at the end of last month, definitely 2024 rather than 2020. I'm not sure what's going on with the claim it's been pending since 2020. I'm literally not sure how a bot would even think that. As to the technical evidence, I see no reason to believe there's been recent block evasion, though it's a noisy range. To be clear, though, that's enough to clear the checkuser hurdle unless anyone has evidence to the contrary. --Yamla (talk) 13:51, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bizarre. It's thinking this is the current unblock request. It clearly isn't. Clearing the cache on the category page didn't help. I wonder if it's getting confused because the unblock request wasn't signed. I'm at a loss. --Yamla (talk) 13:54, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For the aid of any reviewing admin: c:User talk:A1Cafel#F2C ban happened only a few weeks ago. It seems wrong to unblock someone who got themselves in trouble on a sister project only weeks ago. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:16, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I admit that I faces some issues on Wikimedia Commons, but mostly on the format of uploading images. If anyone thinks it is necessary, I'm willing to accept an indefinite topic ban on uploading any images to English Wikipedia. --A1Cafel (talk) 13:41, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For courtesy purposes the Commons discussion can be directly found here.
I understand the appeal of [i]t seems wrong to unblock someone who got themselves in trouble on a sister project only weeks ago. But, I do think that the sort of way that A1Cafel got themself in trouble on Commons—by uploading images from Flickr en masse and too quickly using a particular Commons-specific tool—isn't exactly the sort of thing that would translate to trouble on EnWiki. Perhaps it would be if the user had issues operating an undeclared bot in the past here, and maybe it would cut against granting access to AWB or rollback, but I don't think that it translates to ordinary sorts of editing.
If the principal reason for the current EnWiki block is that the user has evaded previous blocks even after a second chance, some might say that it's permanently disqualifying, as Yamla had stated in their October 2024 decline of this block appeal. But I don't think that this user is WP:3X'd at this point. What does concern me a bit is that the user did engage in logged out editing to avoid a topic ban on Commons in late 2022, and one of the IPs mentioned there had made edits to the English Wikipedia in the topic area of tropical cyclones in October 2021, and it's a residential IP on a /24 that doesn't seem to frequently edit Wikipedia but did contemporaneously make edits to Commons and EnWiki (specific Commons DR) in a way that suggest that this behavior might be related to the same person.
In any case, I don't see evidence of socking more recent than 2021. But I do think that's enough where the {{checkuser requested}} flag should be raised before we consider lifting the appeal on the basis of complying with the "no socking" rule. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:50, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yamla already appears to have checked on/about the 5th based on their comments above in this section (As to the technical evidence, I see no reason to believe there's been recent block evasion, though it's a noisy range.. You think another check is necessary? Izno (talk) 03:53, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had missed that that implied a check had been done. Request withdrawn, but I do think that if there's no recent evidence of socking we might want to consider an unblock. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:55, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
