Rare protests

One of the entries for yesterday (13th of October) states the following: "Rare anti-government protests occur in Beijing <...>". Rare in this context may mean "infrequently occurring" or "sparse and/or small", and it's unclear which one that is here. Unfortunately, I am unable to check the cited source due to being in a country that blocks BBC news, so could someone reword that entry to be less ambiguous?

Georgian bill

Georgia's ruling party announces that it will withdraw a controversial bill concerning foreign agents which prompted days of protests across the country.

That should read "which had prompted days of protests..." The way you've written it, it sounds as though the ruling party's announcement that it would withdraw the bill resulted in protests. This is not quite how it happened. Kelisi (talk) 18:16, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Lagos train-bus crash

Six people are killed and at least 25 others are injured in a collision between a train and a public bus in Lagos, Nigeria.

The linked Reuters story is not quite accurate, as it was not a public bus, but rather one reserved for taking civil servants to and from work. This BBC story might be a better reference. It includes a video report. Kelisi (talk) 18:29, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Events seem biased towards crisis

All of the ongoing events listed are problems. Most have 'crises' in the name. I wish there was a more balanced list that included positive events as well, economic successes, positive political resolutions, technological improvements, and cultural milestones.

Apologies if this is an old topic here. Have recently been trying to find a nice balanced news source. I would love it to be wikipedia, but the crises emphasis makes it less than ideal. I wonder if I could help somehow?

Here's the current list for reference.

Discussion of crisis bias and more balanced coverage

@Benjamin.haley: The coverage of news on Wikipedia is an eclectic cross between elections, sports, awards, corruption, disasters, mass murder, and more mass murder (war). This is a problem for a couple of reasons. One, the good things in the world aren't being covered here in the ratio that they exist in contrast with the bad. Two, the biggest crises aren't being covered adequately, so even the bad news is tilted towards a certain level of bad news: mostly local disasters and killings. But, the world is in the middle of ongoing existential crises that affect everyone, and that are not being monitored here effectively. Aside from the ongoing nuclear arms risk, there's: world overpopulation and its continued increase, ongoing world overconsumption and the resultant human impacts upon the environment (natural habitat fragmentation and destruction, biodiversity decrease, mass extinction, etc.), ongoing climate change (rising ocean acidity, temperatures, and sea level, etc.). And ongoing rapid development of general purpose AI and a possible resultant trajectory toward general AI. Where is the ongoing coverage of those?    — The Transhumanist   01:06, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

Canadian government accuses Indian government agents of murder on Canadian soil

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has today informed parliament that the Canadian national security apparatus has reason to believe that "agents of the Indian government" perpetrated the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-indian-government-nijjar-1.6970498. Of course, we can expect the story to evolve over time but this seems to be a quite notable development worth mentioning here in the Current Events page. Live Blogs, especially Al Jazeera

Live blog usage has been normalized for a long time on the Current Events Portal. This includes especially live blogs to CNN, BBC, and yes, Al Jazeera as well. This has frequently included stories that do not get their own dedicated article page. The usage being a live blog and/or without a dedicated article page of its own has been disproportionately used to remove Al Jazeera headlines. Even though Al Jazeera English and the related English-language AlJazeera.com have plenty of editors' voices to express the reasons why it is continuing to be used the way it has been here at WP:RSN, and recent edits continue to use BBC live blog that amusingly "according to the Al Jazeera news network." itself directly is relying on Al Jazeera's reporting, helping to show the enduring secondary source reputability being established. Please, please do not remove headlines purely for the reason that they are headlines sourced from Al Jazeera's live blog, because Al Jazeera English and AlJazeera.com are reliable sources, internationally award-winning for reporting on the exact contentious subject of the Arab-Israeli conflict in disputed Palestine. Sumstream (talk) 03:26, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

In addition to some valid points made on that discussion, there is also Al Jazeera controversies and criticism and Al Jazeera English#Controversies and criticism to consider. It's quite strange to me that not only is a live blog used (which you would think would have lower editorial standards, since it's live reporting), but the wisdom of using a source which (regardless of how much it asserts its own independence) is still owned by the same authoritarian government that is a state sponsor of terrorism which shelters the leader of Hamas in its capital and is a primary funder, sponsor, and supporter of Hamas. JM (talk) 17:53, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Please consider that I have viewed for years live blog usage of BBC and CNN without complaint, just as there is years of no issue with Al Jazeera, in between flare-ups of conflict escalation. Their reporting on this exact conflict that you are concerned with has earned them international awards, enough for its own article and these are international awards, the Peabody is not administered by Qatar. Also as described in the referenced discussion a "reliable source" does not need to be a "perfect source" or "proven to be free of any bias whatsoever" what you are describing you are not evenly applying Wikipedia guidelines to all sources (such as having no issue with BBC's live blog, which itself also relies on Al Jazeera, as many secondary sources do, because it's reliable and the best option). Sumstream (talk) 19:36, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

War crimes in the 2023 Israel–Hamas war

There should maybe be a consideration if there's enough consensus to just start avoiding the use of "War crimes in the 2023 Israel–Hamas war" header because of how it incentivizes gaming whether or not play-by-play back and forth events if each one is evaluated as being considered a war crime or not by Wikipedia's editors, which seems problematic and against the spirit of the discretionary sanctions on the Israeli-Palestinian and Arab-Israeli conflicts. I've already seen what seems to me to be worrying trends toward arms races of pushing stories in and out of the "War Crimes" grouping to control which events are being called war crimes in this hotly contested and developing scenario... I do think war crimes are being committed but a lot is going on and I don't think we can all keep up with it to the level of very careful accuracy that it should be at this time... but that's just my one opinion so far, not trying to be disruptive or anything. Sumstream (talk) 17:13, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Those events should just be included under the general "2023 Israel-Hamas War" label to avoid passing judgement on if it is a war crime. For many of these, there is not enough info to know if it was a war crime or not, so it should not be definitely stated with a "war crimes" header, which makes it seem like it is known as an undisputed fact that the event was a war crime. Some of these, such as condemnations by NGOs or other governments, should also be in the reactions section instead. Folohsor (talk) 18:24, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Agree get rid of the "War crimes" section entirely, its hilariously/horrifically biased; most of the sources are Al Jazeera (Qatar state-owned media; Qatar is an authoritarian state with no press freedom, and it's a primary Hamas funder, sponsor, and supporter and hosts their leader in Doha among high society) or literal Palestinian groups' statements. The "misinformation" section also seems to be entirely anti-Israel every day from what I've seen. And I know we have WP:NOTRIGHT and most sources are anti-Israel, but its outrageous. TBH maybe it should go to the neutrality noticeboard or get an RFC. JM (talk) 20:17, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I just want to be clear that my statement is not meant as a criticism of the content of any headlines or an attempt to address the content of the headlines involved themselves. Sumstream (talk) 00:53, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Well sure, I suppose what started as me agreeing with you developed into a general criticism of the bias underneath the "war crimes" label. I was going to start my own section about the bias, but figured I agreed with you and your topic was related enough for me to sort of branch off with that elaboration. JM (talk) 01:00, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
@Sumstream@Folohsor@JM2023: just to bring in your notice, the user adding all discussed here has been blocked. All those problematic entries were his own sole additions, followed by disruptive behaviour. Pg 6475 TM 20:14, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

I agree with you! It seems like a good majority of Wikipedia is biased towards Hamas. There needs to be a clear line towards neutrality in this. I support Israel and it just grieves me to see this bias. I always thought that Wikipedia was supposed to be neutral in it's reporting but it's clearly not. Anitarose33511 (talk) 17:23, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
The problem is twofold; Wikipedia can be wrong due to systemic bias of reliable sources, and it can also be wrong due to systemic bias of editors. JM (talk) 19:41, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
Worth noting the user that had consistently filed news items under war crimes has now been indef blocked, so hopefully that cleans up the issue for now.
I'm no fan of Israel per se, but the avalanche of edits every single day began to feel like sizable anti-Israel POV-pushing, especially when multiple sources used weren't exactly reliable/neutral. The Kip 19:40, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

US Navy no longer operates F/A-18 Hornet. 103.151.172.33 (talk) 17:52, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Firstly, this error report should be made at Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors#Errors with "In the news" to keep discussion centralized. About the issue itself, the original source of the image didn't seem to mention the model of the aircraft, nor whether it belongs to the Navy or the Marines. I think it looks more like a F/A-18E/F (the current link is to the old Hornet), but obviously I'm not a reliable source. The Kip (talk · contribs) insists (see here) that red links should not be added on the Current Events portal. Is that indeed the policy? 109.37.142.196 (talk) 22:52, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

I don't think it's a policy after having read MOS:REDLINK and WP:REDLINK; in fact I think there is reason for keeping redlinks on the portal after reading that there is research showing redlinks are a major driver of major contributions in the form of article creation. That said, I don't know everything, so maybe there's a consensus against redlinks on the portal somewhere (if there is, it should be added to the MOS or the redlink page).
At the same time, the policies I listed also say that redlinks should not be used when the subject is not notable enough for its own page, and I don't think the subject that was redlinked in this instance passes that standard. JM (talk) 12:41, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

Inclusion of content in Portal:Current events/2024 March 1

I removed this entry earlier on the basis of WP:SENSATIONAL earlier. The entry was restored without discussion by the OP. Should this be included?

In an address to the nation, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declares that "democracy is under threat" from Islamism and far-right extremism following the election of George Galloway in the 2024 Rochdale by-election, and threats made against members of parliament over the war in Gaza.

This appears to be a standard speech where an elected official makes typical claims about the current geopolitical climate and criticizes their political opponents. This situation is exacerbated in this case as the official is essentially making remarks with the aim of discrediting a recently elected official.

The OP made the following justifcation when reverting:

Nothing sensational about it. It was a prime time address by a Prime Minister?

It appears that there is a clear misunderstanding of notability in this case. Routine activities, such as statements made by a head of state, are typically not included as they do not meet the criteria for notability. 33ABGirl (talk) 14:59, 2 March 2024 (UTC)

Here's the thing though, the speech by Rishi Sunak was far from routine. The speech itself was a reaction to the election of George Galloway to parliament, which has rocked the politicial establishment, and the ongoing Pro-Palestine protests. As both of these events are notable themselves and have been included on the portal, I'd say the speech is notable enough for inclusion here. GWA88 (talk) 19:58, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
Do you have any policies or guidelines that back up that claim of sufficient notability for inclusion on the portal? You've essentially just repeated what you mentioned previously, making the assertion that the address has sufficient due weight for inclusion based on your own opinion. 33ABGirl (talk) 05:56, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
I have removed the content under discussion since there has been no response from OP based on WP:PAG, or any further response at all, despite OP's regular editing. As no other editors have expressed support for the inclusion of the content, despite the discussion being open for a period of time, please refrain from restoring the content until a consensus is reached. 33ABGirl (talk) 17:19, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

This looks like a blatant attempt at canvassing through mass pinging of editors. This editor claims that this page is dead, when being watched by over 6,000 other editors. 33ABGirl (talk) 01:18, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
Absolutey not an attempt at "canvassing", all the editors pinged have been active on the current events portal, most of them on Portal:Current events/2024 March 1, the page of this dispute. I find it in bad faith to automatically assume canvassing, they are free to oppose its inclusion just as much as they are free to support it. GWA88 (talk) 02:01, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
Hi to all, especially to both editors in dispute. You know, I hate, really hate arguments and disputes... But I have been pinged. I think that not all speeches are worth-including, for example, I'm sure that a speech from a leader of Zimbabwe would be removed. I've made entries where I've been urged to look for "action" and not "words"... So... I don't know, that's my opinion as far as I can get without getting involved much further. But if agreement is reached on including Mr Sunak's speech, then I would accept it fully. Please consider my opinion as extremely respectful towards everybody. As I said, I hate arguments to the extreme. Have a nice day. CoryGlee (talk) 09:57, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
Note to all involved: As the OP of this thread has escalated this dispute in what appears to be an attempt to get me blocked I will be disengaging from this discussion until the matter is closed. I will support any consensus that is reached. Thank you. GWA88 (talk) 20:55, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Sources behind paywalls

isnt it an issue to citate stories which are behind paywalls? the BBC for instance is used a lot, however clicking on some of their links from the uk without a tv licence can end us up in court. Ive seen other stories also with sources only viewable if you signup or subscribe / pay to access. Surely we can use sources that are free? its like this site is now useful only to the rich and mega corporations, as one of the main sites in the world, its clearly making the world worse overall by closing down to a few verified sources & focusing on specific stories even when worse or more important stories occur. Surely someone will no doubt come back with a link to wikipedias rules or whatever but my point is the rules clearly suck & the site is wrecking the world, making the rich richer & the poor poorer — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.17.4.48 (talk) 23:28, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Dispute over Taylor Swift album in Current events page

There is currently a low-scale edit war on whether to include the release of the Taylor Swift album on Portal:Current events/2024 April 19. I would not have thought this was in dispute, given that we have a firmly established heading for Current events called Arts and culture which would clearly fit the situation. We have consistently added many items here related to film, music, literature, and the like. Yet here we are.

The main charge of Wikipedia:In the news says it "serves to direct readers to articles that have been substantially updated to reflect recent or current events of wide interest. ITN supports the central purpose of Wikipedia—making a great encyclopedia." The release of this album is clearly in scope here.

Therefore, instead of undoing each other, can we please discuss this in a civil manner here, instead of leaving terse and unproductive edit summaries such as: "not notable" or "Promotional, irrelevant" or "not important"? Most of these amount to WP:IDONTLIKEIT. - Fuzheado | Talk 19:30, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

Fuzheado | Talk 19:30, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

I removed it because it's a release of an album. We don't comment every release of a movie or anyone else's album. The improved one by Pithon314 that expanded on it by saying it was the most-streamed ever makes me more ambivalent about its inclusion.
Also, you're the one who violated BRD by reverting Dubstar44's reversion instead of discussing --Gimmethegepgun (talk) 19:48, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

You are not a very experienced editor, so I'm going to WP:AGF here. What BRD means is to revert to the status quo (which was my addition) then discuss. The fact is, this is notable, fits within the charge of ITN, and has a long precedent of being newsworthy for Wikipedia. - Fuzheado | Talk 20:01, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
The status quo was the article prior to your bold addition of an album release --Gimmethegepgun (talk) 20:07, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for watching out for promotional content Gimmethegepgun. I agree with you that we should not add simply promotional content to Portal:Current events, hence why I tried to add at least one explanation of its notability in my second re-addition. I wanted to expand upon the explanation of notability of The Tortured Poets Department in a discussion since the blurbs in the portal should remain short. First, this album release was widely covered across many media outlets, here are some I found: CBS News, ABC, NPR, Washington Post, and Reuters. As I mentioned in the second edit, the album broke the record for most-streamed album in a single day and Swift became the most-streamed artist in a single day. As now mentioned in the intro paragraph for The Tortured Poets Department, the album had the largest pre-order sum in the history of the retailer Target. This is Taylor Swift's first non re-recorded album to be released since the start of "Swiftmania" that has had a large economic and cultural impact. The frenzy caused her to become the Time Person of the Year in 2023. For these reasons, many of the sources I list all describe the album has "highly anticipated". These are the main reasons I think that the album release is notable and newsworthy beyond just a promotion. --Pithon314 (talk) 07:08, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
Neither of the superlatives in the most recent version of the blurb were supported by the cited source. It says the album was the most-streamed on Spotify, not the most-streamed by any service. And it says she broke her own record for Spotify's most-streamed artist in a day - she "became" that in 2023, not now - and, again, the blurb simply said she was the most-streamed artist, not the most-streamed on Spotify. It may well be that in both cases most-streamed-ever-on-Spotify is synonymous with most-streamed-ever - it's even quite likely - but we can't claim that if the cited source doesn't. (I do acknowledge that you properly qualified the initial versions of these claims with "On Spotify," but that got removed.) —Cryptic 13:43, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for that catch, I meant to include the "On Spotify" qualifier in my comment here as well. I would support a version like this then: "Taylor Swift releases her new album The Tortured Poets Department as a double album. On Spotify, the album breaks the record for most-streamed album in a single day and Swift breaks the record for most-streamed artist in a single day. (CBS News)" so that it is clear that these records are specific to Spotify and not necessarily all streaming. This version is based off my second re-addition (edit [9]) except I fixed the wording to just say she broke the record for most-streamed artist and not that she became it. --Pithon314 (talk) 19:51, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

Incidents involving busses

Are bus accidents really global news? Is it because the death toll almost always >20? Seems like there's a crash about every week or more. Not sure if that should be an "ongoing issue" or not. ZCoupon (talk) 00:37, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

It's the WP:MINIMUMDEATHS debate all over again. I personally don't believe a bus plunge story is necessarily notable enough to be in "Current events", but higher casualty events very frequently get posted on ITN (where the bar for notability is a lot higher), so it isn't too surprising to see this kind of accidents here. The other issue is that we can't really guess whether it will fit WP:NSUSTAINED or not in advance, and a bus accident might have a lasting effect on the country's driving safety laws, or be forgotten the next week.
