2 Sep 20 section header broken

Just noticed that the section header for today (2. September 2020) is broken, and does not show up, when compared to yesterday (1. September 2020). Can't undo act of vandalism (17 September 2020)

Earthquake

Hey I personally can’t edit the recent events page but yesterday 26 September a small (6.2 magnitude earthquake) hit South Africa and I’m not sure if it’s relevant enough to be mentioned but just encase it is. TheWikiAddictReturns (talk) 05:41, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Filtering events by type

I think it would be great if it was possible to filter the displayed events by type.

For example I'd like to filter the page so that it only displays events of "Health and environment" and "Science and technology".

Filters are already implemented for the Watchlist. The same, already coded software, could be used here after a few small changes.

What do you think of this?



Here I created a related software issue on phabricator. There should probably a separate task for this change though as that task is about filters for tables.

There are multiple ways this could implemented. I'd envision a number of tags on top of the page which can either get "whitelisted" or "blacklisted" – either showing all events except for the selected tags or no events except for the selected tags. Similar to the current Watchlist one could also save the current selection of displayed or excluded tags as a default filter or quickly activatable filter (i.e. a button or dropdown). This could also be used by readers not logged in while saving the filter would require creating an account.


Later on there could also be additional changes complementing this – such as highlighting items added since the last visit of the page (e.g. with a background color).

(And both of these changes together would, in turn, allow for:

  • more items, of less or more unclear significance, to be displayed if users change the options accordingly [possibly from pages like 2020 or 2020 in the environment and environmental sciences] – displaying these items could require an option to be changed from "default" to "more detail" for a specific category of events [like "Health and environment"] and
  • making additions to previous days more visible, slowing things down a bit in terms of which events get attention here, and increasing the usefulness of this page, making it also useful as a month-review and more complete)
As a sidenote: I created {{Current events portal}} which I added to the top of 2020 because I don't think links to this page are very present/visible to readers and not shown at all in the mobile view. Additionally, I intended to transclude the "Ongoing events" panel from the template but this currently doesn't work with mobile which is why I removed it. The template as is is currently being discussed for deletion (TfD).

If you think that such filtering would be useful what would you suggest needs to be done to get it implemented (further steps)?

Ordering of elections in the sidebar

I just want to know if there has been a consensus for, or if there already exists some format to the order of elections in the sidebar. More specifically, if there are multiple elections scheduled to take place on the same calendar day how should the elections in question be ordered. I thought it was to be alphabetical, but there has been edits made by others to order it based on the time zones of the locations where the elections are to take place. I figured that an alphabetical order was the most neutral ordering, and I find that ordering by other methods seem more finicky than needed. If time zones are to be factored in, do you account for the literal hours that polls open/close for an election or just whenever the calendar day starts for the particular place? What if an election takes place in a location that covers multiple time zones? Unless someone can point me to an already existing convention in place, why not just keep it simple and order alphabetically from now on? -boldblazer (talk) 07:06, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Restore Belarussian protests to front page

I strongly recommend putting Belarussian protests back on the front page, as the situation is ongoing and actually escalating each day. This is an extremely polarizing issue affecting millions of Belarussian citizens, the outcome of which will have global ramifications as it will set a precedent in neighbouring Russia and in dictatorships elsewhere. RD in sidebar

Is there a rule for how long entries in the recent deaths section of the sidebar should stay? I removed a lot of older entries per a comment that was there that said "Suggested rule of thumb: Whole current month until archivation, otherwise limit to 25–30 entries, or span a scope of 14 days, whichever is longer", but then User:Farolif re-added them and removed the comment. TfD: Current events portal – a template for an embeddable, collapsed panel of the Current events

I created Template:Current events portal for an embeddable, collapsed panel of the Current events that could be added to articles like 2020, which would make each page more useful and give the Portal:Current events a higher visibility. The existing portal templates are not visible on mobile at all with only a few rarely-used exceptions which can't be aligned to the right of a page as would be best for the article 2020.


Templates still can't be uncollapsed on mobile – this would require MediaWiki software changes to modernize the software to fully support mobile browsers. Under the Template documentation I have added the template as it was/is supposed to look like, which works properly on desktop.

I think the template is still useful as:

  • the template could be used as is before the MediaWiki software gets improved to better support mobile
  • maybe it's possible to show the template as is for the mobile view but display the template currently in the template documentation for the desktop view so that embedding the collapsed panel at least works on desktop
  • it could be iteratively improved by e.g. adding an icon or via other things
  • the existing templates ({{portal|Current events}}) that are visible on mobile can't be aligned to the right

As a sidenote the template was intended to only embed the fairly short "Ongoing events" part of the Portal:Current events and not the entire panel but this doesn't seem to be possible as of right now without a change to the portal (but maybe it'll be possible later). This would be for a later discussion / a separate phabricator issue.

Template inclusion limit on Portal:Current events/October 2020

Alert from WikiProject Current Events

Hello. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events format is currently being updated. However, one new change is a section for "Current discussions". The Portal:Current events has debates all the time to determine if things are notable for the portal (international news) or if they are better suited for a place like 2020 in the United States. In the past, small 'edit wars' have taken place between editors over topics. This new section on the WikiProject is a new place where editors can discuss between each other and have an easy access to 'outside opinion' from other participates. Members in the Current Event WikiProject are welcome to invite other editors that have disagreements to start the discussion on the WikiProject. (Unlike RFC's, discussions about topics would be about 1 week or whenever the topic is no longer relevant from the WikiProject).

Picture for ITN

Is there a reason we have in ITN the picture of the second most recent article? For example, the newest article is the Great Conjunction while the picture is Chang'e 5. Proposal to split off 'Worldwide events' in Current Events into perhaps continents, or at least add a portal solely for United States events

The United States entries are becoming quite cumbersome and while I do not argue that a page might not be useful, if every single thing that happens in the US is talked about then, in my opinion, every other country should be talked about just as much. This shouldn't be a site for 'cults of personality'. I don't know where to discuss this other than here. Terrible idea IMO. Splitting the portal up just overcomplicates things for the readers. The current format is easy and simple with all the news reported under a single day. Multi-Revert Issue with Alsoriano97

@Alsoriano97: Have now had multiple stories across 4 days of news reverted totalling seven individual stories, often with minimal discussion reverted. Requesting some kind of resolution on this, as user Alsoriano97 is apparently personally trying to decide what represents "relevant" based on their own interests. User has already violated 3RR rule. Also warned user of issues during ongoing discussion in reverts. This type of personal fiefdom behavior dramatically disincentivizes contributions to Portal Current Events.

  1. May 14th, 2 Cyberattack Stories reverted
  2. May 14th, Air Force Theft Story (Warned user about multiple reverts and reverted)
  3. May 13th, Tunable Hydrogel Science Story
  4. May 12th, 3 stories removed, doubling food prices, soldiers supplying guns for mass shootings, and serial killer of veterans
  5. May 10th, story on Australia insinuation of coronavirus as weapon

Liz Cheney removal from office story

As a secondary question, what is considered "relevant" for Science and Technology? Does it need to be the Wright Brothers demonstrating flying before it can be posted here?

As a third general question, are there any guides for what is "relevant" at all for Portal Current Events? How many news sites does it need to be covered by? How much does it need to affect the Earth?

As a challenging example, even though Covid-19 is in the news, I would argue that numerous Covid-19 stories amount to nothing other than number tabulation that could easily just be placed in the daily updated infection charts (India's large scale issues being notably different) Araesmojo (talk) 23:10, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@Araesmojo: Of course there are guidelines and even habits. Do you think that after more than a year editing Current Events I act arbitrarily and according to how I want? "trying to decide what represents "relevant" based on their own interests"....Jesus Christ! I understand that you are new here, and you are more than welcome, but in this Portal we work in a way (and we all can always improve) so I advise you to take a look at the previous months and years, to the reviews of other users (because obviously I am not the only one who deletes things that for nothing). This is not a page of The Seattle Times where to put any news that has to do especially with the United States. @Araesmojo: Hi. Thought I'd leave my thoughts here since you tagged me. As you can see on Alsoriano97's talk page, I have raised this issue with him before, almost a year ago. He seems to obsess over "domestic" news but only when from either the United States, United Kingdom or Australia, basically English-speaking countries. He told me "that this world is no longer Anglo-centric and, therefore, neither is Current Events", which immediately told me he is editing with some kind of pre-existing bias against news from "Anglo countries". As you can see from his userboxes, he is quite an ideological person, which is also a bit concerning, since the current events portal should always remain as neutral as possible, for example, not taking sides in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict or Brexit. Alsoriano97 describes himself as both a "Zionist" and "anti-Brexit". We are all entitled to our viewpoints but given his history of bias editing, it does concern me. I've also explained to him before that the portal is essentially mostly "domestic news" of international interest, if you removed all domestic news then you wouldn't have any news on the portal! He doesn't seem to grasp that a domestic story in the U.S. might interest readers in Europe and so on. Like you mentioned, he has also been edit warring. Since his disruptive editing doesn't seem to be changing, I too would support a resolution on this issue, and for the record, I think the portal could use much more science news! The Science and technology category is probably the most underutilized of them all, so by all means Araesmojo, keep posting news of scientific interest! I would say that if the scientific news is about a significant breakthrough or discovery, whether in robotics, computing, chemistry, paleontology or space travel ect.. then it is probably notable enough. I mean, what's the point in having a category about science and technology news if you can't post anything? It exists for a reason. Of those stories you posted that Alsoriano97 reverted, I'd say most were definitely notable, especially the cyberattacks, which could also fall under law and crime. The Wuhan Institute of Virology story is a bit questionable since it borders on conspiracy theory territory, but I'll say that the sources you provided were legit. To be safe, in the future I would avoid stories of conspiratorial nature. I'm glad that you will continue to post news on the portal. Possible weather event for inclusion

I'm not 100% familiar with the systems for adding content to as prominent a page as this but I hope this is useful to somebody. According to various media outlets (Reuters, France24 etc) unseasonal subzero temperutures have destroyed most of the coffee crop in Brazil, with the Financial Times reporting a sharp 20% rise in international prices. I'm not sure if an article already exists which can be linked to or if not, if it meets notability criteria.

Question on LGBT Taliban Story of 9/4/2021

 Taliban males raping a homosexual male would imply male-male sexual interaction.  Therefore, the Taliban soldiers must then have had enough arousal to have sex with a male, even if it was violent.  And this is public enough knowledge its in news reports?  They even let the homosexual male leave so the character could report on what would be death sentence shame? I think my issue is it feels like a troll story designed to stir up shit and guilt about leaving Afghanistan. Every other year we argue about this when the rowing event comes up. There's a difference between a national tournament where the entire nation's young athletes in a particular sport are participating and an exhibition match between only two universities. There are many "traditions" which are important to various peoples which happen every year, but they are not newsworthy. Loiue Warner has been identified as the third son of the sus imposter Nigel Farage. Farage was questioned but did not respond to us reaching out. Misinformation on the page for 8 hours

An anonymous IP added the claim that "vials containing the smallpox virus" had been discovered in Pennsylvania. This claim stayed on the page for 8 hours! The actual story is that a lab worker at a Merck facility found 15 "questionable vials" labeled "smallpox" and "vaccinia" while cleaning out a freezer. As the smallpox vaccine is made from a virus called vaccinia, the most probable explanation is that the vials contained smallpox vaccine, not smallpox. Regardless, it is irresponsible for us to publish such conspiracy-inducing headlines without solid sources to back them up. If no one is checking the statements on this page for accuracy, especially surprising or outlandish ones, we should not be allowing anonymous IPs to edit it. New political party in France

I'm unfamiliar with this portal, and need some advice. I got here from the links at Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events because I had been looking at adding a {{WikiProject Current events}} project banner to the article Talk:Reconquête (political party). Reconquête is a brand new political party launched in France on 5 December 2021, by far-right journalist, pundit, and now, politician Eric Zemmour. Opinion polling for Zemmour for President experienced a meteoric rise in the last weeks and months, and this was before he was a candidate, or had a party. He has now declared his candidacy, and created a new party, Reconquête, less than a month ago.

This is all still very fresh, with things happening on a daily and weekly basis. In particular, editors here (many from France) are making edits to the Reconquête (political party) page which (at this moment) are unsubstantiated, such as that it is a far-right political party, or that it is Islamophobic. It might be, but it is so new, that there isn't information about this yet, and good-faith editors are just transferring over well-established opinions about Zemmour (like the fact that he is far-right, and Islamophobic) to the party article without proper sourcing. Probably they are right, but it's WP:CRYSTAL at best, as there are no sources for this (yet).

The new party isn't strictly about "one event" in that sense, but it seems to me it belongs in current events, to the extent that we are witnessing the birth and rapid evolution of a new political party in France right now, one that has a chance to be among the top two parties in the next presidential election. It seems to me that this party article needs more eyeballs on it by experienced users to keep it on track, and to watch for excesses by enthusiastic editors who are eager to stuff it with information about Zemmour, before there really is much reliable information out there about the party.

Anyway, I'm not sure what the window for a "current event" is, with respect to this Portal, or how to add one, so any advice would be appreciated. In the meantime, I've gone ahead and added WP:WikiProject Current events to the article Talk page; if that seems wrong, please feel free to revert it. RfC on which year should be the cut-off point

At this point, Portal:Current events/April 1994 has been deleted. If that has been deleted, then we might as well delete the pages for all the other months in 1994 too. So, we need an RfC.

Which year (from 1994 to 2006) should be the cut-off point for the monthly subpages? The current status quo is 1994. If there is consensus not to have monthly subpages for any month in a particular year yyyy or earlier, then all the following pages and their talk pages should be deleted:

I'm not sure it was a great idea to start that, as I'm guessing those pages are visited very rarely. I'm interested to hear more about the history of how they came to be and what state they're in. I checked the source but the CNN website is structured in a way that makes finding the exact place that this claim comes from a pain. Is there a better source/better way to document sources from this website? Nigerian gubernatorial elections

From Wikipedia "Stories added to the main portal page should be of international interest. Stories of only regional or topical interest belong in their appropriate sub-pages, if any." I have reverted Watercheetah99 three times already and I don't wish to enter an edit-war. What do other editors think about this? In addition to my earlier argument, in general, I don't believe that any 'minor' regional elections from any country (apart from a few exceptions) should be covered on the Current Events page. This isn't just about "Nigerian gubernatorial elections" – it's about including almost any state- or regional-level election in Current Events. In general, we should not be doing this unless the election is somehow of actual "international interest" (i.e. receives wide and significant international coverage) – very few state- or regional-level elections will actually get to that level. Not only is the inclusion of these elections a positive step due to their undeniable notability, a move like this confirms the current effective reality as subdivision elections (mainly of those with large populations) are already regularly included on this portal (examples: 1 and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 plus plenty more). Gubernatorial, regional, autonomous communal, and other subdivision elections are often notable; denying this notability because they are not national elections serves literally no purpose. "Notability" is about whether they merit Wikipedia articles. The standards for Current Events are different – it's not about "notability" – again, MattSucci quotes the relevant standard: "Stories added to the main portal page should be of international interest. @Watercheetah99: Looks to me like you are unilaterally changing a few of Wikipedia's codes, or comprehending them poorly. Everything you need to help you understand why these elections shouldn't be included, is contained here. There are many entries that don't merit inclusion at Current events. but this one I find particularly problematic. You keep on directing me to rules and codes but absolutely none of them applied for subdivision elections before today; if not ever applied or even written down, it's not a rule—your interpretation of this page isn't actually a rule everyone else must somehow know and follow. You can argue that subdivision elections should be barred (I'll disagree with it but that point is coherent) but you cannot argue that a current subdivision election should be barred for a rule that does not exist right now. That you've decided to use this election to make your anti-subdivision election point is perfectly fine but you cannot retroactively apply a rule that has not even been established.
And miss me with that slippery slope nonsense, you and others are perpetually doing good work watching this portal so I doubt we'll reach a point where something like politicians' birthdays are being included - the idea that this one post (which again, is no different to identical posts from literally last month) will "open the doors to a plethora of other unnecessary entries" is so laughable. Like think about it for just a moment: subdivision elections have been acceptable entries for years, if they were just the first step towards anarchy don't you think we would’ve reached that by now. Maiden Flight of Greater Bay Airlines

I recently added a entry to the Current Events Portal relating to the Maiden flight of Greater Bay Airlines, which was reverted. I would like to seek the opinions of other editors relating to this entry.

"Hong Kong-based airline Greater Bay Airlines completes its maiden flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok. The airline has been granted licenses to operate 104 routes across the Greater China and Asia Pacific regions."

General guidance from Wikipedia states that "Stories added to the main portal page should be of international interest. Stories of only regional or topical interest belong in their appropriate sub-pages, if any."

While a maiden flight of a new airline is usually only regionally notable, I believe that in this case, this airline is of special notability. My rationale for this is as follows.

  • The airline has received considerable support from both private and public entities, and has already obtained licenses to operate 104 routes at prior to its maiden flight, a significant number compared to usual airline launches, which usually only start with a few routes. [3]
  • The 104 routes cover a significant area in the Greater China and Asia Pacific regions, encompassing a number of countries across the regions, making the airline a topic of international interest.
  • The maiden flight is a significant milestone for an airline, marking the point at which an airline begins its operations.

I made the original revert of Carter00000's edit and I still argue that it is regional and fairly insignificant, but due to the fact that recently a large amount of 'regional' and 'insignificant' edits have been made, re-adding this isn't going to detract from the article in general. I believe that a more intense discussion should take place as to what is considered a current event of international interest, but it would seem that not many editors are interested enough to contribute their opinions. Noted that you have re-instated this entry on this talk page. First, I was editing/reverting the post using the mobile application and did not realize that I was only reverting part of the entry. My intention was to revert the entire entry and not only the links which I actually reverted.
I reverted the entry because the post did not seem to make sense, given the context of this talk page where it was placed. This talk page is primarily for the discussion of contentious entries in the Current Events Portal. At the time of posting, the subject covered in the links had just been posted as a new entry by a second editor, and its inclusion has not been challenged up until now, except for wording changes. Hence it would seem that this posting is unnecessary.
Taking into account the above, the reason why I classified this as vandalism, is because I felt that the purpose of this post was aimed at activism. The language used is very emotive "New Israeli Millitary Operation!!!" & "Start Writing!" (assumed correction of spelling) and sound very much like a call to activism. I also felt like the "Start Writing!", in conjunction with the links felt like an order for another editor to write the content for them, given they had not contributed anything to the portal in the first place, which I felt was an unacceptable sentiment. Had they wanted to discuss additions, a more appropriate tone and explanation could have been provided.
I understand this is a new account (given the few edits), and English may not be the editors first language, but given the emotive language, I presumed in favor of the above explanation. I further note that upon being reverted, the editor did not try to engage or defend the original post, instead replying with a meaningless statement "yeah "vandelism" on the talk page of current events". Of course, some mitigation can be made for this, given the nature of my original revert.

btw, I'm certainly not a newborn editor, but over a year and half on the Heb Wiki. Not having edits at one version of any wiki certainly does not mean the user is lack of wiki knowledge. anyway, it was just a matter of time untill the article would be blocked (avoiding Israelis to edit TV to Wiki). trust me, Israelis are and would be the first to know everything abuot the comming war.   • Editing restrictions for new editors: All IP editors, accounts with fewer than 500 edits, and accounts with less than 30 days tenure are prohibited from editing any page that could be reasonably construed as being related to the Arab–Israeli conflict.
In the meantime, a standard work-around is to propose additions on the talk page as you have done, and editors eligible to post may be able to add the content for you.

Update to an "Topics in the news" subject

Let's say, there is a significant update to one of the selected few "Topics in the news" entries, or one of these entries from few weeks ago. As example, there is a (theoretically) update to 2022 Oder environmental disaster
I presume, one can add an entry into "September 1, 2022 (Thursday)" titled 2022 Oder environmental disaster and describe the update in short since that news was so major to be put into the "Topics in the news" area, so significant updates will be noteworthy news every time, am I correct on that? Hello! I am supportive of having a link to the Wikipedia:Top 25 Report on the current events page; I just think "Entry views by week list" is a bit technical and confusing.
