FYI
Hello, Qwerfjkl,
That IP editor who keeps requesting redirects about etymologies is User:Mx. Clarks, an account that is globally blocked. I just saw on another user talk page that they admitted that they couldn't use their regular account so they edit as an IP which I guess is why they keep requesting that you create pages for them. If I knew how to do range blocks, I'd try that because every day they have a new IP account. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:#800080;">Liz</span> Read! Talk! 22:15, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
Hello Qwerfjkl, is the correct syntax , because it doesn't fend off the bot. hasn't been over-ridden yet but is that just good luck? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:02, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's something you would need to discuss with the developers of your framework. If it isn't working right you will need to stop using it until you can resolve it. Did you reivew the specific edit I linked to and agree that you should not have made that edit based on the bots directive? — xaosfluxTalk15:11, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that is probably overkill, but certainly will fix this problem. Overkill in that it will make you skip pages like . — xaosfluxTalk15:42, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Have you been able to validate that the problem is actually resolved - you should be able to test that without editing. (Please @ping me here when done for an unblock). — xaosfluxTalk16:17, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Many of these edits were helpful. An SBN, however, is not the same thing as an ISBN (history discussed here), leading to the errors seen here. Also, although the bot's edit description noted that "Ordinal numbers should be in regular text, not inside tags", the tags that were used were to maintain the formatting of the source. --Usernameunique (talk) 23:28, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Usernameunique Hi, thanks for reporting this! You can stop this bot (and any other AWB bot) from re-editing the page by adding anywhere in the page (an invisible comment will help). You can see the related discussions above this section. Regarding the ISBN → SBN change, you might want to follow this up at WT:AWB, as it is part of AWB's Genfixes. ― Qwerfjkltalk23:37, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Qwerfjkl. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:
Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. Seddontalk23:16, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes
Most large file uploads errors that had messages like "stashfailed" or "DBQueryError" have now been fixed. An incident report is available.
Problems
Sometimes, edits made on iOS using the visual editor save groups of numbers as telephone number links, because of a feature in the operating system. This problem is under investigation. [1]
There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of a configuration error. [2]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 November. It will be on all wikis from 18 November (calendar).

Hello,
I tried changing the address location on the page gor Leo Louis Chabot I created so it could have better attention. But I got a message it is not allowed because apparently I changed the User. So my question is… Is there a way to change the address so he can be found easier? --Chabot4me (talk) 14:07, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
Dang, you did a number on my redirect "awesome brah island"
That being said, I made that link years ago and it was certainly an inside joke that did not stand up to any scrutiny and was likely correctly admonished as a "blatant hoax", or at least "implausible" ;)....I suppose I am just as sad to see it go as I am glad that the powers at be do not allow such jiggery pokery to go on indefinitely.
Please refrain from relisting discussions for a third time (especially if no discussion has occurred after the second relist). These type of discussions should be left for the next patrolling admin to handle them. And in some cases, a "no consensus" close is better than a relist. I recommend reading WP:RELIST and WP:SILENCE which will guide you on how to relist discussions properly. Thanks. CycloneYoristalk!22:43, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)
The already authorized standard discretionary sanctions for all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), broadly construed, have been made permanent.
Thank you so much for tagging the empty categories! For years, I did this task every morning (U.S. time) but lately I've been getting to it later and later in the day and I didn't do it at all yesterday so today's list was twice as long. It's good that there is more than one person who checks this list. Typically, there are between 10-20 categories each day but it can get into the hundreds depending on what pages have been deleted so extra help is always welcome. It doesn't take a lot of time to do, but it's good to stay on top of so things don't pile up.
There are a few editors who create most of our categories who have asked not to be notified when a category they created has become empty and I can relay this information to you if you pick this up as a regular task and add it to your already crowded list of things you tend to on Wikipedia. Thanks again! LizRead!Talk!23:09, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.
December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.
November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.
Other news
It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.
Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).
Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Problems
MediaWiki 1.38-wmf.11 was scheduled to be deployed on some wikis last week. The deployment was delayed because of unexpected problems.
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 December. It will be on all wikis from 9 December (calendar).
At all Wikipedias, a Mentor Dashboard is now available at Special:MentorDashboard. It allows registered mentors, who take care of newcomers' first steps, to monitor their assigned newcomers' activity. It is part of the Growth features. You can learn more about activating the mentor list on your wiki and about the mentor dashboard project.
The predecessor to the current MediaWiki Action API (which was created in 2008), action=ajax, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch to the corresponding API module. [4]
An old ResourceLoader module, jquery.jStorage, which was deprecated in 2016, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch to mediawiki.storage instead. [5]
Graphs are unavailable due to technical issues. There is more info on Phabricator and on MediaWiki.org.
BRFA activity by month
Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.
Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.
Overall
Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these, Y 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful (N2 3 denied, ? 3 withdrawn, and 2 expired).
TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebroxnoted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
Curb Safe Charmer adopts reFill: TAnthonypointed out that reFill 2's bug reports were going unanswered; creator Zhaofeng Li had retired from Wikipedia, and a maintainer was needed. As of June 2021, Curb Safe Charmer had taken up the mantle, saying: "Not that I have all the skills needed but better me than nobody! 'Maintainer' might be too strong a term though. Volunteers welcome!"
I made no such requests. In fact, I clearly stated that I would fix those transclusions. If you want to beat me to the punch and fix some of them, fine, whatever, but don't give false attribution (blame) to me. — voidxor20:51, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh...yeah...that editor is trying to make trouble for me because we have history. "Soft-redirected userbox" are my words from earlier this week. He knows full well that I've been working on fixing userbox transclusions in AWB as a pet project since the pandemic began. I've fixed tens of thousands. The irony is that I'm nearly done. The two userboxes that he mentioned in that request were near the bottom of my to-do list. Some others for which I'd already fixed transclusions were just nominated for deletion Monday, Thursday, and yesterday. — voidxor04:07, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Re your comment on Carol Greitzer article
Hi - I mentioned when saving the changes that the new info was via personal interview with the subject of the page. I am Carol Greitzer's daughter - she requested to me in conversation that I add the additional text. Please activate the page - thank you for monitoring.
