Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. Utah NRHP list revamped, photos wanted!

The National Register of Historic Places listings in Utah (shortcut List of RHPs in UT), a list of NRHP-listed historic sites in Utah, has been greatly revamped and now accomodates photos and short descriptions. Any NRHP place is usually wikipedia notable, so separate articles can be created too. The NRHP application documents are great sources, are available for free upon request to the National Park Service. But, even without article or sources, you can help by taking pics of the historic buildings, sites, objects, historic districts near you! There are 1,838 places, all tabulated now, spread out across every county in the state. Separate photos for each one would be great!  :) doncram (talk) 16:47, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. GA Reassessment of Mormon Trail

I have found the article does not meet current GA Criteria and as such I have placed the article on hold pending work. Park West Amphitheater

I'm working on an article in which one of the sources mentions the Park West Amphitheater in Salt Lake City. All I can glean from the internet is that it has probably been shut down or renamed (i.e. "the former Park West Amphitheater") and that it may have been in Park City rather than Salt Lake City. The current Canyons ski resort was formally named Park West. The Park West Amphitheater could be referring to the concert venue that was used during the off-season. My wife and I saw John Denver there in the mid-90s for The Wildlife Concert. — Zaui (talk) 20:59, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

There is an article titled List of people from Utah and another one titled List of Utahns. I think the List of Utahns should be added to the List of people from Utah, and then the List of Utahns can just redirect to List of people from Utah. Interesting stub. Just a few things I see right off. The "early life" section says nothing of his early life. Where and when was he born, etc.? Needs more wikilinks, you need to italicize the titles of the newspapers, and don't say "the Mormon Church" (see WP:MOSLDS). Anyway, it's a good subject to cover; keep up the good work. Utah articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Utah articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. Request to modify widely used image in Utah articles

At the FAC for Thistle, Utah,(Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Thistle, Utah/archive2) a request has been made to modify the image File:USA Utah location map.svg to have an inset to show context, similar to this image File:US_30_(IA)_map.svg. This would affect about 200 articles, most of them articles on cities in Utah. I agree with the proposed change, are there any objections here? Dave (talk) 19:18, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

The previously-used map image had such an inset, but this one replaced it because the map had more detail (e.g., rivers and Utah Lake). I support the change, as long as it doesn't actually overlap part of the map the way the Iowa one does. Probably the southwest corner of Wyoming is the best place for the inset. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. I've started some new articles for Utah County historic sites, including Alpine LDS Church Meetinghouse andStagecoach Inn (Fairfield, Utah). Update: Have been adding NRHP nomination documents and other material to all existing articles, and starting new ones where missing, for all 172 NRHP-listed sites in Utah County, see List of RHPs in Utah County. Up to 134 out of 172 now. Help adding to these articles would be welcomed. :)

Since we're all suddenly paying attention to this, I'd like to suggest that someone combines the article for the Stagecoach Inn with the article for Camp Floyd, and then move the whole thing to "Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park and Museum", which looks like it is the most correct name for both. Great! I've just been contributing, from afar, by adding the NRHP nomination documents and/or Utah State Historical site forms, and I don't know the local facts. I should say there are already a lot of pictures available, contributed by several editors; editor Kaiguy817 has contributed a lot of the articles, but seems not active recently. Glad to see the interest.

Sure, okay about the suggested merger ... have just merged the two and moved to Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park and Museum. Merged article could definitely be improved. It was unclear to me what is the relation of the two items: was the Stagecoach Inn near to, but not on, the original camp? Because it is stated that the camp floyd site had nothing left but its cemetery. Are they both in or near what is now Fairfield, Utah, etc. The NRHP nom forms that are linked from the articles are simply unclear on the locations and don't address the relative locations. Some local knowledge should be used to fix the location descriptions etc, and IMHO does not need to be specifically sourced if it is not controversial info. --doncram 04:06, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Take back control over WikiProject Utah talk pages

There are currently some Utah wikiproject members who watch this Talk page, and who would sometimes participate in discussions, if there were traffic. However all traffic is misdirected to the United States WikiProject or elsewhere, by WikiProject US talk page headers which have taken over the WikiProject Utah talk pae template.

Hi. Could some of you please take a look at the above page? There has been a single IP editor that has added tons of unreferenced content over the past few months. I have tried to engage him, but he simply blanks his talk page and stops editing for a week or so. Neighborhoods of Salt Lake City

I'd like to improve the list of NRHPs in Salt Lake City, to identify which neighborhood each one is in, in a sortable column (that would replace the unnecessary "City or town" column presently showing). Showing neighborhoods has been done in a number of other city-specific NRHP list-articles. I see there exists Category:Neighborhoods in Salt Lake City, Utah that currently has 14 neighborhood articles, but I don't think that's an exhaustive treatment.

There's a need for List of Salt Lake City neighborhoods (currently a redlink), similar to List of Boston neighborhoods, List of Denver neighborhoods, many others in Category:Lists of neighborhoods in U.S. cities. Is there an official source available, about Salt Lake City-defined official neighborhoods? --doncram 14:59, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

I haven't lived in SLC for over a decade, but AFAIK they don't have any officially defined neighborhoods. I don't know of any city ordinance designating 600 North as the southern boundary of Rose Park, for example. I think organizing the NRHP list better is a worthy goal, but I expect it to be hard to get a definitive answer as to the neighborhood of many of the properties. Probably a minority of them have a neighborhood (again, not official) specified in their nomination forms, nearly all of which are online. That said, the best source I've seen for neighborhoods in Salt Lake is a Salt Lake City Weekly article found here. I think it has a few that don't have Wikipedia articles. I see there is a "Neighborhoods" section within the Salt Lake City article and there also exists an odd-seeming-to-me article named Buildings and sites of Salt Lake City with a section "Neighborhoods and Councils". I think the latter section should be eliminated as a neighborhood is not a "building or a site", with the material moved to a new article. And the SLC article's section can be linked to that new article as a main, separate Neighborhoods of Salt Lake City article, using the SLC Weekly article as a main source. Hopefully to advance matters quickly, I am starting a draft new article at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/List of Salt Lake City neighborhoods. Could someone please move the drafted article to mainspace? Update: A reviewer at Articles For Creation deemed the drafted article to be inadequate, with comment "It is not clear how this article improves wikipedia more than putting each of these (mostly non-existent) articles in a category." That feedback was given in good faith, but the reviewer doesn't understand how Wikipedia works for list-articles and categories. There is good guidance at wp:CLT, to the effect that a list-article is complementary to a category. Obviously a list-article can contain red-links and provide a complete list, while a category cannot. I don't want to argue this with the reviewer. The article was developed adequately, IMO, by myself and Ntsimp. Could someone just move it to mainspace, so that we can proceed (e.g. link to it from the NRHP list-article? --doncram 17:27, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Coalville? and Thomas L. Allen

The Summit Stake Tabernacle, also known as the Coalville Tabernacle, is a former building, apparently demolished, that listed on the National Register of Historic Places and later removed from NRHP listing. Is it in Coalville, Utah or not? The NRHP NRIS info lists the building's address as Summit Stake Tabernacle, 1st North and Main Sts., in Salt Lake City, UT, within Salt Lake County, but the Coalville article identifies itself as being in Summit County.

I wonder if there is an NRIS error, to be noted at wp:NRIS info issues UT, or whether the tabernacle was moved, or whether Coalville moved, or something else? It comes up, for me, because of mention in NRHP documents for the Thomas L. Allen House in Summit County, and I'd like to start an article for the tabernacle, if I can find some more info. Either way, the former listing should be properly identified in the "former listings" section of either the National Register of Historic Places listings in Summit County, Utah or List of RHPs in Salt Lake City list-article. Also is Thomas L. Allen an important person deserving of an article? I am not sure. --doncram 17:05, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

summary treatment of NRHP-listed archeological sites

Hi, i've been considering the plethora of NRHP-listed archeological sites in National Register of Historic Places listings in Duchesne County, Utah and in National Register of Historic Places listings in Carbon County, Utah. In particular there are 158 archeological sites in Nine Mile Canyon within Carbon County and 7 within Duchesne County, almost all of which are merely designated by a code such as "42Cb31". These are all or almost all currently redlink items.

There's an example in Hawaii, of Archeological Sites at Kawela, which is the redirect target for each of a bunch of separate NRHP listings within National Register of Historic Places listings in Molokai.

Here in Utah, I am thinking the way to go is to similarly redirect all the Duchesne and Carbon County sites (i.e. the code names) to Nine Mile Canyon#Archaeological sites. That article section could be slightly expanded with addition of a footnote mentioning every one of the specific codes. Comments? --doncram 16:41, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

It used to be pretty much that way (with the codes in the Nine Mile Canyon article text rather than a foonote), but I changed it. I thought the list of so many Smithsonian trinomials with no further information added nothing to the article. The article is already linked in another column of the table. I'm pretty sure this was before the creation of WP:NRHPPROGRESS and before the consensus to use the AR images on the list. I guess if we're cheating to keep these counties from being blue on the illustrated map, we can also cheat to keep them from being blue on the articled map. Back when the first Nine Mile listings were added, I was pretty optimistic about getting info and photos of these sites, but as time goes by, my optimism wanes... Thanks for your comment and for sharing the apparently proper term Smithsonian trinomial. Yes I rather agree about cheating one way being consistent with cheating the other way. But, given the actual situation here, it seems that redirecting the NRHP names, the Smithson trinomial codes, to the Nine Mile Canyon article section, seems the right thing to do. We don't actually want to have redlinks that are calling for readers to start articles. Like the use of the AR image reflects that we don't want readers to contribute photos, for these items. I think the treatment in the Nine Mile Canyon section is good in its current brief form, which I think is your good work. I would add a long footnote listing the NRHP names / trinomial codes, so that those may show up in web searches, and to establish clearly that "this is where Wikipedia is covering" these items. I could go either way about that being in a footnote or in the main text, but footnoting was what i was planning, and it seems to be a compromise between too much in main text vs. no mention. For the Molokai example, I am responsible for much of how it appears, from editing a few years ago, but currently I don't really like the table of the NRHP names in the target article, as it doesn't carry much real info, so I am inclined to try lighter treatment in a footnote, here, now. Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! I added the WikiProject Utah banner to Another Language Performing Arts Company because the article says the company is located in Salt Lake City. I'm wondering if anyone in this WikiProject has heard of this group and can help determine whether is satisfies WP:ORG. I Googled "Another Language Performing Arts Company", but didn't find much more than social media pages or other trivial mentions. Most of the information seems to have been added by a couple of SPAs, including one who is claiming to be a cofounder of the group. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

List of mountain peaks of Utah has a problem with template inclusion. It simply has too many references by the look of it. There are only 50 or so mountains, in three lists, but each has four or five references, added by a template {{cmt}}. Looking at the references it really only needs one each; perhaps other sites could be added as external links. But this is not straightforward to try as a template does it all.
