I will be doing the GA Reassessment on this article as part of the GA Sweeps project.
In reviewing this article I have some concerns:
- The lead is too short. Per WP:LEAD the lead is supposed to be a summary of the entire article, covering all the points of the article. An article of this length should have between two and three paragraphs. This lead is very undeveloped and does not meet the current GA Criteria
- References (or lack thereof). Two sub-sections in "The Trek West" have no in-line citations. In "sites along the trail", the Iowa sub-section, there are two websites that serve as an introduction to the rest of the section but no in-line citations. Nebraska sub-section has in-line cites but then only sporadic in-line citations in Wyoming and none in Illinois. The referencing needs to be more complete.
- MOS compliance is another issue. One of the GA criteria is compliance with the MOS. Not slavish compliance, which is required for an article to be FA, but general compliance. There are a couple of general compliance issues that need to be addressed:
- Hard spaces and dashes. Per WP:NBSP the editor is to use non-breaking spaces (or hard spaces) between numbers and units of measurement, such as 7 miles. Also per WP:DASH editors need to put hard dashes, en dash (–) between numbers when there is a range of numbers. For example, "They were on the trail from 1871–1872. Or they traveled 20–25 miles per day". I understand that this is a bit ticky tack and will not hold the article too strictly to this issue.
- Units of measurement. Per WP:UNIT the editor is supposed to convert miles to km in parentheses.
- Overlinking. Per WP:OVERLINK dates and country names should not be linked the article.
Considering these issues I can't keep the article as it currently stands. I will hold it for a week pending improvement. I will reassess in a week. H1nkles (talk) 22:54, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- I've been trying to address the issues that you've identified, but it will take me longer than a week. Since I wasn't the original author of most of the text and am not sure what sources were used, it's taking me a while to track down references. BRMo (talk) 02:29, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for your work, I note that a lot of edits have already been done and the article is improving. The Handcarts section and the last few paragraphs of the Ongoing Migration section are still unreferenced. The lead is improved. If the references can be added then that will be sufficient. I will extend the hold for another week if that is sufficient. H1nkles (talk) 15:31, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- I believe that just about all of the issues that you raised have now been addressed. BRMo (talk) 05:17, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Perfect everything is good and I thank you for your work. H1nkles (talk) 19:14, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
