Welcome!

Welcome to WikiProject Cannabis! I am glad to see membership has increased 5x in just 24 hours since I started this project. I am hoping many more productive members join. Currently, I am looking at ways the project can be expanded. If any one is familiar with how WikiProjects function, as is will to help establish assessments, Collaborations of the Week, task sheets, etc., feel free to contribute in any way possible. Once a task section is created, we can come up with articles that need to be created, list some that should be expanded or upgraded to Good Article or Featured status, etc. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any cannabis-related articles with Featured status, but the Cannabis in Oregon article has GA status so it has been listed under the appropriate section on the project's main page. Hopefully more will be added in the near future.

While I imagine many members may be pro-cannabis, I'd like to remind users that the goal of this project is NOT to project views onto others or gear articles towards any particular belief. Our goal is simply to improve articles relating to cannabis, and increase its coverage. I'd like to create a userbox specifically geared towards WikiProject Cannabis, as some members may not actually be pro-cannabis (perhaps this should be removed?--it was the only cannabis-related one I could find in the userbox gallery). Welcome again, and I look forward to working together to improve articles. Once an assessment is established, it should be easier for members to see which articles need work. Feel free to post ideas, comments, questions, and feedback here. Also, be sure to invite members you think would be an asset to the group. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 03:36, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Assessment

Step 1: This link contains a list of cannabis-related articles that have not yet been assessed on the Importance Scale by WikiProject Cannabis. Clicking on any of them will take you to the talk page of the article, where you can click on 'edit' to change the Quality or Importance of the article. By adding "|importance=X" (remove the quotation marks), where X is Low, Mid, High, or Top, to the WikiProject Cannabis template one can assign an appropriate Importance. For example, click on 'edit' here to see how Effects of cannabis was assigned a High Importance rating. I am thinking individual cannabinoids should be marked Low on our importance scale. I have marked the Cannabis and Cannabis (drug) articles as Top importance. Perhaps laws, organizations, proposed legislation, and overarching articles (such as Cannabis in the United States or Cannabis in New Zealand) should be High importance. I will start working on this soon, but feel free to assist if you are familiar with the process. Feel free to ask questions or leave comments here. Once articles have been assigned a category on the Importance scale, it will be time to assign them a category on the Quality scale. --Another Believer (Talk) 02:08, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I had already started assessing articles before you wrote this. I've been assessing most of cannabinoid chemicals (as I am a chemist by trade), and I do think that they deserve to be placed at a higher importance (depending on their known functions). The cannabinoid compounds are the chemicals that make up cannabis and are what give the drug its effects. I think understanding these compounds and how they affect the body is essential in order to assess the role this plant/drug has in medicine and personal health, which should also influence the legal bounds on the substance. I understand that chemical properties don't seem to be important from a layman's perspective, but chemistry is what describes how things work, and I think it is crucial to the integrity of this project. But perhaps I'm just being a chemistry geek. Kpstewart (talk) 03:21, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, thank you so much for heading a head start! Actually, I am so glad you have a background in chemistry, as I am not too familiar with the subject (my background is in biology). I marked (I think) all of the cannabinoids as part of WikiProject Cannabis, thinking most of them were not too important as far as the project is concerned. I would imagine most of them are Low on the importance scale, but perhaps you can designate the most common/important ones as Mid or High on the scale. I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help at deciding which ones are more or less important. Again, thank you so much for your help, and I am glad someone with an interest and background in chemistry is able to help improve articles.
Status Meaning of Status
Top This article is of the utmost importance to this project, as it forms the basis of all information.
High This article is fairly important to this project, as it covers a general area of knowledge.
Mid This article is relatively important to this project, as it fills in some more specific knowledge of certain areas.
Low This article is of little importance to this project, but it covers a highly specific area of knowledge or an obscure piece of trivia.
The above table displays the importance scale--please keep this in mind when assigning articles. Also, projects typically follow the following structure on the importance scale: Top=1% of articles, High=15% of articles, Mid=30% of articles, and Low=55% of articles. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 03:30, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject userboxes

I suggest some WikiProject userboxes be created. For info on creating userboxes see {{userbox}}

Here are some userboxes (and the wikitext for them) for related WikiProjects:

{{User WikiProject Drug Policy}}

{{User WikiProject Correction and Detention Facilities}}

Some WikiProjects have more than one userbox, so that people have a choice. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:16, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. I was planning on making one or two, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. The one currently posted is really being used as a substitute. I think one that reads "This user is a member of WikiProject Cannabis" is good, as it does not reflect a position (pro- or anti-) regarding cannabis. If any one else comes up with others, feel free to share! --Another Believer (Talk) 19:47, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Hello. Thanks for starting this WikiProject.
The userbox on the project page is not really a WikiProject userbox:
{{User:Disavian/Userboxes/pro-cannabis}}
User:Disavian/Userboxes/pro-cannabis
This user is pro-cannabis.
It is more of an opinion userbox. I think we need a separate WikiProject userbox if anybody gets the time to create one. For more info: {{userbox}}
--Timeshifter (talk) 19:59, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Doing... Working on making one for the project now... Will post when ready! --Another Believer (Talk) 20:02, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Update: "{{User WikiProject Cannabis}}" now produces the following:
Hope this works! Feel free to post any others that can be used for the project. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:25, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
By the way, I went ahead and replaced the pro-cannabis userbox with the above project userbox. I don't have a problem listing opinion userboxes on the project as well, though I think they should be clearly designated as such. The purpose of this project is not to encourage or discourage cannabis use, it is simply to improve articles relating to the subject. I am sure there are anti-drug and pro-drug userboxes, though at this moment neither stances are displayed on the project page. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:34, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Cannabis category assistance

I cannot figure out why all articles marked with the {{WPCannabis}} template appear in both the 'WikiProject Cannabis' category as well as the 'WikiProject Cannabis articles' category. I would prefer that all articles marked to be part of the project appear in only the 'WikiProject Cannabis articles' category. Also, this is how other WikiProject seem to be structured, even though I have copied their templates as examples. Not sure what the problem is, but feel free to help if you can. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 19:49, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

I think I fixed it. I hope so. I moved Category:WikiProject Cannabis in the template wikitext, and put it in between "noinclude" tags. To prevent articles from being categorized in that category too. Only the {{WPCannabis}} template itself will end up being categorized in Category:WikiProject Cannabis.
It may take awhile though for the articles to stop showing up in Category:WikiProject Cannabis. Sometimes nested template changes can take around a day or two to be implemented by the MediaWiki software. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:14, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Thank you so much! Let's keep an eye on it to make sure it works, but I appreciate you taking a stab at it. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:28, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Seems it worked! Great job. Thanks so much! This project is off to a great start, and I look forward to watching it expand even further. I am still working on assessing articles. Not sure how often a bot updates the assessment, but you can click on any category displayed to see that more articles have been assessed than the chart currently displays. Eventually, I would like to add some of the features currently used by WikiProject Oregon and other projects, such as a To Do List, Collaboration of the Week, detailed DYK and Awards sections, etc. Be sure to look at Category:WikiProject Cannabis (the link is found at the bottom of the project's main page) for internal links associated with the project, as well as subcategories that contain all articles, articles sorted by quality, and articles sorted by importance. Let me know if you have any questions or comments, and be sure to invite any other users that you see making constructive contributions to cannabis-related articles. --Another Believer (Talk) 00:50, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Industrial hemp

I would like to see some more information about "industrial hemp", the so-called cannabis oglalas. I have yet to see an image of this stuff and cannabis is one of the most photographed plants in the world. I think we especially need some image of the flowers of this plant since the flowers are the most potent part and the lack of resin production would go a long to demonstrating the actual existence of such a plant. I remain skeptical. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PaulPk (talkcontribs) 20:02, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

We can certainly keep that in mind. As for articles relating to hemp, Category:Hemp might help, though I am sure more hemp-related articles will crop up eventually. This link may also have more information and images for you. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:21, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
There's not much information about this and google scholar doesn't have anything. From looking at the website that hardly looks like a reliable source either. Hemp is just a strain of Cannabis sativa. Herbal Hi (talk) 22:02, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, we don't have any FA or FL-class articles relating to cannabis. Any suggestions for an article that project members can work on in an attempt to reach featured article status? I saw Spiritual use of cannabis recently received a peer review (thanks to Whig)... any other suggestions? --Another Believer (Talk) 22:04, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

We should prioritize improvement of the most important articles, it would be good to consider a similar review on Medical cannabis. —Whig (talk) 02:51, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
Good idea. Perhaps I should take more time with assigning Class and Importance ratings to more of the articles first... that way we can see which articles are most important the project. Another idea: once more members have joined, it might be worth considering a Collaboration to focus attention on one particular article at a time. --Another Believer (Talk) 02:58, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
How about improving Cannabis? It would seem like the most logical place to start. Herbal Hi (talk) 20:18, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Absolutely! With just a little of work and attention, that article could get to Featured status, or certainly Good status. I had that one on my radar, but with all the movement with the Cannabis (drug) article and cultivation articles, I thought I would wait for those to stay settled before working on the main cannabis article. Great idea, though! I will add Cannabis to the future collaborations list. By the way, welcome again to the project, and I look forward to your contributions. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:41, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Images

By the way, if you run across a cannabis-related image, feel free to use {{WPCannabis}} on the image's talk page, and enter "|class=Image" to associate the image with WikiProject Cannabis. Category:Image-Class Cannabis articles contains all images currently associated with the project. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 20:29, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Cannabis (drug) cultivation article

It seems there is quite a bit of activity and confusion regarding the cultivation article. It has gone from "Cannabis (drug) cultivation" to "Marijuana cultivation" to "Cultivation of cannabis", all within the past couple of days. If there needs to be more discussion about the moves/title, feel free to use this area for commenting. My question is this: "Outdoor cannabis cultivation", "Indoor Cannabis cultivation", and "Alternative Cannabis cultivation" were recently merged into the aforementioned article, however the talk pages for Outdoor, Indoor, and Alternative exist. Because I know the articles just redirect to the general cultivation article, I have not assigned them a Quality or Importance rating. Will these talk pages eventually disappear, or what should we do about the assessment for these two non-existent articles? --Another Believer (Talk) 19:33, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

I think we should merge the Talk pages into the Talk:Cannabis cultivation page, and replace these pages with redirect links. —Whig (talk) 22:17, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Agreed. No point to these talk pages when the articles themselves redirect to Cannabis cultivation. As for its relevance to WikiProject Cannabis, it would mean we wouldn't have 4 assessment entries for the same article. --Another Believer (Talk) 22:21, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

"Drug Testing" (The Office)

Does this article belong under the umbrella of WikiProject Cannabis? I feel that this project should definitely consider cultural aspects relating to cannabis (perhaps the most famous ones include Cheech & Chong, Willie Nelson, Bob Marley, Weeds, etc.), but I am not sure if this episode focuses enough on cannabis specifically for us to claim as relevant to this project. Any thoughts? FYI - if we do take on the article, we will have another Good article under our belt. :) --Another Believer (Talk) 03:39, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

I dunno, it would be of extremely low importance anyhow. —Whig (talk) 02:26, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, for sure. Guess I was just looking for some feedback regarding where to draw the line. I understand every reference to cannabis cannot go under our umbrella, but I thought I would point it out just in case it would make a good cultural addition to our project. --Another Believer (Talk) 04:07, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't think this article belongs under WPCannabis. The whole purpose of WikiProjects is to unite users with similar interests/expertise in order to improve articles. I don't believe that incorporating that article into our project will improve the article or this project. Let's focus on the more important things and leave such articles to other WikiProjects.--Kpstewart (talk) 00:46, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Collaboration

I encourage all project members to take a look at the collaboration page, which outlines how the collaboration works. Collaborations are a great way for project members to focus attention on a single article and work together to improve that article as much as possible within a short period of time. Improvements can include minor edits (fixing spelling, grammar, etc.), greatly expanding the article, adding images, upgrading the article on our Quality scale, and/or nominating a fact from the article for the Did You Know section of the main page. Members are strongly encouraged to add the collaboration page to their watchlist so they can remain updated with the current task and any discussion that may be taking place on the talk page. The collaboration page also contains a list of former tasks and the end result for each. Feel free to add articles you feel would make good collaborations to the 'Future collaborations' section. Collaborations are a great way to improve specific articles and foster cooperation, so I hope you will participate! --Another Believer (Talk) 04:40, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

What types of articles would excited other project members to contribute to the collaboration? Participation has been almost non-existent, so I was just wondering if I was picking bad articles to work on. I strongly encourage project members to nominate articles they would like the project to work on, add the collaboration page to your watchlist, and contribute to the collaboration whenever interested/possible so that we can expand the articles as efficiently and effectively as possible. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 20:35, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Any ideas for a cannabis-related list that could eventually reach Featured status? Currently, there are only six List-Class cannabis articles, though I am not sure if any of these could be brought up to Featured status. Of the ones currently in the category, I think List of Schedule I drugs (US) has the most potential. I love working on lists, but for some reason these ones do not interest me as much. Any other ideas? Feel free to look at the complete list of Featured lists here, or review FL criteria here. --Another Believer (Talk) 19:58, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Not that this is too high on the importance scale, but Stony Awards might be a fun one to get up to Featured status. Category:FL-Class awards articles contains 112 awards lists that have reached FL status. I started a table to hold year, award and recipient information, though I am not sure this table is the best format. I figured it might be nice to sort by year, award title, or recipient (in case someone wanted to see all Best Actor winners, or if Seth Rogan won two awards in the past or not). However, I am not sure if this format would be better, where you cannot sort all columns but the year column looks cleaner. If we could write a nice, informative lead, list all award recipients, and provide detail about the awards offered and ceremonies where they are presented, I think this could have a good shot. This would certainly be more fun for project members that prefer the cultural/film realm of cannabis culture. Just an idea... --Another Believer (Talk) 20:20, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
I have nominated List of United States politicians who admit to cannabis use for featured list status. Let's hope the nomination process goes well. --Another Believer (Talk) 19:20, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Classification of Cannabis

I've left comments on Talk:Cannabis and Talk:Cannabis sativa regarding the taxonomic classification of cannabis - at the moment we are a long way off following reliable sources on the matter. Cannabis states that there are "three putative species" but putative is defined by wikidictionary as "Commonly believed or deemed to be the case; accepted by supposition rather than as a result of proof" - basically we shouldn't be using them if this is the case. Could somebody who is autoconfirmed please suggest merging Cannabis sativa into Cannabis? We could legitimately have articles for each sub species and variety if we see fit but at the moment Cannabis sativa is a copy of Cannabis mostly and I'm not sure if there is really that much difference between the varieties. Herbal Hi (talk) 12:14, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Now I'm auto-confirmed I've proposed the merge here. Comments would be appreciated. Herbal Hi (talk) 21:57, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Tasks

Hello there, Sarah108 here. I did not have the confidence to include this on the main page, not sure if this is the type of task you are referring to, but we on the medical cannabis page have been trying to get a good picture for the lead image.

We have spoken with Dr. Abrams, and he suggests that the current picture is more of an historical one, what belongs as a lead image, in his opinion, would be a picture of a cannabis bud, from which the medicine comes.

However, one editor on the page insists we must be able to prove the bud is indeed from a verifiable medical source. We have attempted to get images from a dispensary, with proof that it is from a medical source in the background of the picture, if that makes sense.

We need help, any suggestions? 68.13.134.213 (talk) 18:27, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

FYI, WikiProject Cannabis will soon have a bot that will create a Popular Pages link and update it monthly to show us which of the 500 pages within our project are receiving the most views. This information will help us know which cannabis-related articles are read most frequently by wikipedia users, and will tell us which articles we might want to focus on for our collaborations. Should be available next month, so I will post the link when I see it. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 23:59, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Great idea, sounds helpful! C6541 (TC) 00:59, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Help request for Medical cannabis page

Hi all, the Medical cannabis page is undergoing a battle right now. Would anyone care to stop by and take a look? Many thanks, 72.213.23.110 (talk) 00:38, 11 August 2009 (UTC) (sko1221 ~ i am unable to edit when i am logged in for some reason)

Will take a look. --Another Believer (Talk) 01:49, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. Essentially there are 2 editors who have come to the page, starting in mid-July. Every reference is being changed by Chris C, as you can see by a quick look at the history. He has changed scientific articles supporting medical cannabis to refs that don't go anywhere, refs that say the opposite of the article content, or just abstracts. Essentially he is hiding information and changing the entire content of the article. He works in tandem with a scientist working on pharmaceutical cannabis pills.
We need help, it is only one editor (me) trying to keep up and it is getting heated. I am formally letting you all know that the Medical cannabis page had been taken over by very suspicious, unfriendly activity and as a complete novice at Wikipedia, I am completely in over my head. I have asked for a third party to stop by, but other than that, my last step is to let you all know as I have lost the battle. Please help. 72.213.23.110 (talk) 14:12, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
A few of the most recent edits by C. C. actually appear to be constructive, but I will take a look at some of the others even though I rarely get involved in edit wars for such large, controversial articles. Honestly, that article is just a mess, and it's a shame because it could be such an interesting read. It is good that you asked for assistance from a third party, and I will be sure to keep an eye on the article even though I will be working a lot the next few days. Thank you for the update. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:57, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
I understand, that is what makes this difficult. On the talk page under 'problems with new edits', I have enumerated a couple of the fishy edits. Essentially, he has been working for a few weeks straight in hundreds of edits, changing all the refs. There is a team waging a mean war against only a couple of volunteer editors. These are the same people who insist on keeping the picture of Sativex as the lead image, even after we consulted a main med MJ doctor/researcher (Abrams) who suggested a picture of a bud best represents med MJ. They fought like mad to keep that picture, and won. The page is in their hands, as we don't have all day, every day, to watch what they are up to, and then to fight with them about it. It is so sad that Wikipedia really belongs to the interest groups with the most resources. 72.213.23.110 (talk) 18:00, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

I agree that the Talk:Medical cannabis page is getting out of hand. Does anyone know how to archive talk pages? I don't think the posts from 2003 to 2008 are all that relevant. And perhaps archiving the current heated battle might settle things down.--Kpstewart (talk) 22:08, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

I have never done it before, but this link contains information about archiving a talk page. I believe archiving is encouraged when there is a "lull" in discussion, which is certainly not the case at this time, but other sections could certainly be archived due to overall page length. --Another Believer (Talk) 18:13, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Talk:Medical cannabis is now being archived. —Whig (talk) 16:43, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Collaboration time length

Be sure to read this discussion regarding the length of time WP Cannabis dedicates to each collaboration. Feel free to offer comments, or vote on whether or not you would prefer that each collaboration be set at a 2-week limit. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 15:57, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

New collaboration will be coming up in just 2 days. I encourage project members to vote, or even be in line to update the collaboration page and pick a new collaboration for the group to work on. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:02, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Category:Endocannabinoid reuptake inhibitors nominated for deletion

I thought I would let other members of this projects aware that I have nominated this category to deletion. I have included the rationale for this on the category discussion page (Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2009 August 22#Category:Endocannabinoid reuptake inhibitors). If anyone would like to weigh in on the discussion, please do so on that page. --Tea with toast (talk) 16:28, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the heads up. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:02, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

United States Marijuana Party

United States Marijuana Party is the current collaboration, but it doesn't seem to be generating much interest. Unfortunately, I am not able to find much information about the party, which I thought would be easy to research given it is a political party. Just three days left to contribute to the article, if you wish. Also, feel free to vote here regarding the designated amount of time for each collaboration, though I am already going by the proposed rule since the collaboration project in general doesn't seem to be as popular as I had hoped it would be. Just putting an update out there to those that are interested. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 01:59, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Cannabis to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cannabis/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 01:59, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks so much! This is a wonderful tool for us to use. --Another Believer (Talk) 02:15, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

California

Ok. Can we get a page like this for California - Cannabis in Oregon. Cannabis in California. And can we get some expansion on this: Tax, Regulate, and Control Cannabis Act (2010). Thanks. --cooljuno411 22:42, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Actually, you might want to take a look at Drug policy of California before starting a new article for Cannabis in California. Even though that article would contain information about other drugs as well, much like Controlled substances in Oregon does, a page specifically focusing on cannabis in CA should not be created until the drug policy article is too long. --Another Believer (Talk) 23:49, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

More medical marijuana disposers in California than Starbucks, McDonald's and 7-Eleven

"Across California there are an estimated 2,100 dispensaries, co-operatives, wellness clinics and taxi delivery services in the sector known as “cannabusiness”. That is more than all the Starbucks, McDonald’s and 7-Eleven outlets in the state put together." - The Times - California dreaming of full marijuana legalisation. Could this quote be incorporated anywhere?--cooljuno411 06:51, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

The Drug policy of California article needs to be expanded greatly. I could see that quote being used in the cannabis section to help illustrate the state's unique stance on the subject. Controlled substances in Oregon can be used as a template--you can see how the article discusses alcohol, cocaine, meth, and other drugs. The quote could potentially be used in other articles that address medical marijuana programs, such as Medical cannabis in the United States or the 'effects' section at California Proposition 215 (1996). Hope that helps! --Another Believer (Talk) 17:14, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Bob Marley GAR notification

Bob Marley has been nominated for a good article reassessment. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to good article quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status will be removed from the article. Reviewers' concerns are here.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:08, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Project members, Bob Marley is our current collaboration. It would be a shame for this article to lose its GA status, so let's work together to make sure it remains a quality article. --Another Believer (Talk) 21:01, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Good news is that Bob Marley has been kept as a good article. Off2riorob (talk) 11:06, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Great news, indeed! Thanks for your contributions to the article. --Another Believer (Talk) 07:44, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

List(s) of cannabis users?

There is a collection of featured lists known as "List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people", separated by last name in alphabetical order. For example, List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people: A. All of the lists have obtained featured status. I am wondering if we could do something similar for "List of admitted cannabis users", or something similar, essentially creating a list of famous people that have admitted to using cannabis (obviously, with reliable references to offer evidence). However, it seems this would be a very long list, as there are numerous celebrities, activists, politicians, entertainers and other notable people around the world that have tried cannabis. Can anyone think of any particularly important categories of people that might be more specific for now, such as "List of American politicians that have admitted to using cannabis"? Is this even relevant? I am trying to think of a way to make similar lists that could eventually reach featured status and help improve coverage of cannabis in a non-biased manner. --Another Believer (Talk) 22:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

I dislike these lists and find them more trouble than they are worth, as cannabis use is mostly illegal the issue would likely need a self identifying citation. Off2riorob (talk) 23:07, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I agree. But I have found sources of admission for Michael Bloomberg, Barack Obama, Ed Koch, Al Gore, Bill Thompson (New York), and Bill Clinton, for starters. I am working on a list now--will post the link soon. If the list is not acceptable, it can be deleted. --Another Believer (Talk) 00:21, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

I also find such lists to be unhelpful, and I agree that the legality issue gives more reason against making such a list. However, it might be helpful to have a list of "Cannabis Supporters", or, since it already exists, Category:Cannabis activists. Such a list could be further subdivided into categories like "Founders/Presidents of cannabis organizations", or "Celebrities who endorse cannabis legalization reform". Because I would not call passive supporters "activists", I suggest that such a list not contain the word "activists" if such people are to be included. However, calling the list "Cannabis activists" would also leave room to include those people who actively oppose Cannabis legalization. --Tea with toast (talk) 00:31, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

I also support the idea of a list of cannabis activists. However, I do not see how the illegality of cannabis would prevent a list from being relevant. This is no different than a list of famous murderers, since murder is also illegal. Besides, the article would make no accusations--the politicians have admitted to use, and each entry would be cited appropriately. I do think these lists could be helpful, as they make readers aware of notable political leaders' past experiences and the articles used for sourcing contain commentary on social policy and trends, etc. The article could make for an interesting read as well, perhaps touching on the history of marijuana policy in the United States and the contradiction between the illegality regardless of the fact that many notable policy-makers have experimented with the drug in the past. I do not mean to create this list in a pro-cannabis stance, but simply as an informative list. --Another Believer (Talk) 00:56, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Example: List of American politicians that admit to using cannabis

Despite being illegal under federal law, some American politicians have admitted to using cannabis, a drug also known as marijuana. Cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act (1970), and possession of it is punishable by up to one year in jail and a minimum fine of $1,000 for a first conviction.[1] Politicians that admit to cannabis use in the past include city mayors, Governors, members of the House of Representatives, Senators, and Presidents.

How does this look? Please keep in mind that the example above does not include section headings. The list could be updated over time, and I have several more to add once reliable sources are found (Gary Johnson, Mary Donohue, Dick Lamm, etc.). The real question is whether or not you think the list is relevant as a stand-alone list, and whether the lead can be expanded to include a brief history of marijuana policy in the United States. Any thoughts? --Another Believer (Talk) 02:29, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

I like it, it is a good start, although I wonder at the title, is it a viable cat? Off2riorob (talk) 02:34, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Not sure, but I couldn't think of a more appropriate or condensed way to word it. Any other suggestions, or comments about the possibility of expansion and necessity of the list? I believe that a list or article should be created if it could one day reach featured status... could this list meet the featured list criteria? --Another Believer (Talk) 02:38, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
I recommend making the title a little more concise: List of American politicians admitting cannabis use. If you still prefer the original proposed title, please replace the word "that" with "who". --Tea with toast (talk) 01:31, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Or perhaps List of American politicians who admit to cannabis use? More importantly, do we feel the list can stand alone and could potentially be upgraded to featured status? Lists need to have a purpose, context, and relate to other articles... so I just want to make sure that this has potential. If I create the page, perhaps this would make a great collaboration for group members to work on so we can get it up to date as quickly as possible. --Another Believer (Talk) 16:23, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Do any other project members have any thoughts on the above list? --Another Believer (Talk) 16:08, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
It looks well researched. Are you going to go live with it? - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 16:56, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Just started the list here. Feel free to help expand both the lead and the list with sourced information. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:21, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
FYI, the politicians list is currently undergoing a peer review. I have asked several featured list reviewers to take a look at the list, so hopefully they can provide some great feedback. Project members are welcome to participate if interested. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:37, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Pineapple Express collaboration

I realize the article for Pineapple Express is not at the top of our priority list, but please keep in mind that the article is one of the most-visited pages associated with our project. In that sense, the article deserves more attention. I have asked members of WikiProject Films and WikiProject Comedy to assist with improving the article, and I am hoping that we can upgrade the article to Good status by the end of the month. A member of WP Films left suggestions here regarding how to improve the article. Feel free to contribute in any way possible--it would be great if we could add another Good article to our project!

Also, I encourage project members to add the collaboration page to their watchlist so that they can remind up to date with the current collaborations and how we can work together to improve articles. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 16:16, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Does this article belong under the umbrella of WikiProject Cannabis? This article has been about cannabis pipes for 3 years but it has just been turned into an article about pipes in general, apparently because the title is ambiguous. That probably means the title should be changed, not the content of the article. Maybe someone here could look at it? 90.214.11.152 (talk) 23:27, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

"Old King Cole was a merry old soul, and a merry old soul was he - for he called for his pipe and he called for his bowl, and he called for his fiddlers three". Leave as is; pipe bowls have been around for far longer than mary-jane. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:05, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Maybe someone factchecking can verify that this expression was taught to children as a way to describe the "bowl" formed by thumb and forefinger, the other three fingers being the "fiddlers" (wave them to and fro).Tokerdesigner (talk) 23:56, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

A dispute has arisen between myself and another editor. They want to remove the link to the cannabis portal from Portal:Contents/Portals/Health and fitness arguing that it is not a fitness and health topic. I oppose this because I believe the portal and project are focused chiefly around the drug and related social and public health issues. If the link is removed, the question arises of where else this portal should appear in the list of all portals. This seems the most obvious place to discuss the matter to try and reach a consensus. Comments and discussion would be welcome. --Simon Speed (talk) 23:27, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Correct. I am arguing that Cannabis is a far more wide subject than "Health and fitness". The most known and covered part of the Cannabis subject is probably political issues (at least in most western societies). The medicinal properties of this plant is rarely covered in the newspapers. The cannabis plant may be used for bioenergy, plastics, textiles, food, in agriculture (for preventing soil erosion for example), building materials, recreation and medicine.--Dehugs (talk) 08:54, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
As much as I am for exposing the medicinal and spiritual benefits of cannabis, I do think it is a bit of a stretch to include the Cannabis portal within the Health & Fitness portal, mostly because just a few of the articles within the scope of the Cannabis portal focus on the health benefits of the drug. I think the Cannabis portal is more closely related to the fields of pharmacology, politics, sociology, culture, etc. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:23, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
I could support removal from the health and fitness group as it doesn't really get you fit, does it? Also it is not actually good for your health is it? It is used a tool to help with that wasting illness, but not in a medicinal way but more in the way of a natural substance that reduces the symptom of a disease and make it more bearable but in the same context it is nor actually medicinal. Off2riorob (talk) 21:29, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
You are right. The argument could be made that some people use cannabis for mental health, but your argument is completely valid, and I agree with you that (for the reasons you mentioned) the Cannabis portal should not be included. --Another Believer (Talk) 21:33, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Seems like we agree to each other. So, under which category should the link be placed?--Dehugs (talk) 11:10, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps under "Society" and/or possibly even Biological sciences. The problem (when it comes to categorization) is that cannabis is a plant (biology) with psychoactive (drug) chemical properties (chemistry) that has a culural (society) and political (politics/law) impact. Honestly, I am not sure where it is best classified. I DO know that the Cannabis Portal needs to be updated. I think it should be a personal and project goal to get the Portal up to standard and hopefully even Featured status soon. --Another Believer (Talk) 07:05, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Rastafari movement

Should the Rastafari movement article be under WikiProject Cannabis? It was, until recently, when someone removed it. Any thoughts or opinions? (Also, feel free to take a look at the similar question raised for the Parks and Recreation episode above.) --Another Believer (Talk) 06:32, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

The use of cannabis is a key facet of Rastafarianism, as a large religious group that is extremely involved in the culture and use of cannibis it should be under the scope of WikiProject Cannibis. Scince I was unable to find a reason for the removal of this page from the project i have returned it to its original state Potheadpoet (talk) 19:09, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Compassion clubs

I think it's about time we have an article on the subject of medical cannabis dispensaries or "compassion clubs" etc. There's been discussion about this in the past however I still never got around to doing it because I just don't know where to start! I'm still not sure where exactly this subject fits into or what title the article should have and which redirect redirects where, (Marijuana advocacy?, Compassion club?, Medical marijuana dispensary?, Cannabis dispensary? all still redlinks surprisingly, despite the notability of the subject) or indeed how to separate the subject of illegal compassion clubs from the legal governmental medical marijuana dispensaries. And for existing articles there's Cannabis Social Club and Cannabis Buyers Club however those are about specific organizations rather than the general subject. There's a huge amount of reference source material out there, lookup "Compassion club" on Google Scholar or Google Books, for example. So basically, besides the fact i'm not much of writer, I'm just having trouble knowing where to start with this. So I'm hoping someone knowledgable from this project can sort out the details and get this article(s) started.. then I can add in supporting material as I have some good medical journal sources. It would be a good way to expand the Cannabis Portal too. -- œ 05:09, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Re: Marijuana and the brain, are the editors here aware of this article? It seems like it's mostly a fork of several existing articles, it's orphaned, it reads like an essay, and there seems to be some issues stated on the talk page too. In any case I'd like to bring it to this project's attention, as it needs... something.. I just don't know what, and I'm sure someone here would know more of what should be done with this article. -- œ 14:08, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I have had never seen this article before, and since it has not been added to WikiProject Cannabis I am not sure any one else here has either. I went ahead and added it to the project, though I have not yet accessed its class or importance. There are definitely many issues with this article, and I am sure a lot of this information could be covered at Short-term effects of cannabis or Long-term effects of cannabis. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:06, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Speedy deleate: This appears to be another shared account (which is against WP policy). Switching_usernames#Sharing_accounts & User:Psyc4600. The article may not conform to some policies or guidelines, but as far as schools and colleges go, It's not necessarily a bad thing. We want schools to use Wikipedia, as most don't and actually forbid their students to use it. There are, in fact, many articles that are used for school assignments. -- œ 03:39, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Oops, I didn't realize there was a discussion about this article already started on this page. (See the "Article in need of attention from an expert" section I wrote below.) I'm glad to know others are aware of this articles issues. I agree that there is much overlap between Marijuana and the brain and Long-term effects of cannabis (and I did not know that the latter article existed either until just now. Wow! Is that one page that is too long!)I think the existence of an article dedicated to "Cannabis and the brain" (proposed title change), could help shift some of the bulk of the long-term effects article.

One thing that I think will help focus both of those articles is to create an article titled: Cannabis dependency. Does anyone else support the creation of such an article? --Tea with toast (talk) 01:42, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Not sure which title is correct, but thanks for starting the article. I went ahead and made this the current collaboration for WikiProject Cannabis, so hopefully others will join in expanding the article. Also, when it gets long enough, we should remember to submit a DYK hook so that the article can be featured on the Main Page. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:00, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
I went ahead and changed the title to "Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010", as this is what the website says is the official title, and based on the number of search results when using Google (compared to "Tax, Regulate, and Control Cannabis Act"). If "of 2010" does not belong in the article title, we can certainly move it again. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:18, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Marijuana and the brain: article in need of attention from an expert

While reviewing unassessed articles, I encountered the article Marijuana and the brain and found several statements in the article to be false, not supported by the references given, and many more statements which I believe are misleading. The article presents many interesting studies, but I feel the primary author of this article may have misunderstood some of the findings, presenting them from a personal bias. The organization of the article is also confusing. I believe many terms and concepts are not properly introduced and may further confuse readers. I have posted a similar notice to WP:WikiProject Neuroscience in hopes of finding someone to help address the science aspects of the article. But I would like the opinion from some non-neuroscience editors: 1) to help find terms and concepts that should be better explained because I feel the article may be too technical for non-scientist, 2) there is a large "social" component to the article, which I feel can be addressed by editors here who are familiar with the social context of marijuana.

I should note (to entice your assistance) that there is a lot of interesting data to be found in the article, I just think it needs much help in its presentation.--Tea with toast (talk) 01:04, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

420 (cannabis culture)

Hi everybody. I'm looking for anyone who may be interested in helping me improve the quality of 420 (cannabis culture). It's in a terrible shape at the moment. Currently, it's little more then a short paragraph about the origin of the term followed by a listing a few regional festivals. We all know there's more 420 celebrations then that! The programming a few TV networks, the daily smoking rituals some engage in, and the plethora of local musical festivals spring immediately to mind. I know there has got to be more verifiable material out there on the subject and I feel like if we can get a few people together to research it, we can really make this into an article we can all be proud of. So, is there anyone out there interested in pitching in? --Leodmacleod (talk) 22:35, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Map of decriminalized states

Hi, The map of decriminalized states needs Massachusetts added.. editor Another Believer removed the state for some reason unknown to me and just left it like that. I asked him to fix it and he deleted my comment on his talk page and did not take any action or respond.. so someone please fix it.. as it stands.. no map on the pages is a better solution then an inaccurate not fixed one.. -Tracer9999 (talk) 01:23, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for discussing the map here (readers, for the record, we are referring to this decriminalization map). And for the record, I did reply on Tracer's talk page. While I admit that my attempt to update Massachusetts was unsuccessful, my edits were in good faith. I explained why Tracer's comment was deleted, as a similar comment was left on the map's talk page and the map is on my watchlist. While I apologize that my attempt to update the map was unsuccessful, please do not confuse an honest mistake with a bad intention. Given my contributions to WikiProject Cannabis and numerous cannabis-related articles, I can assure you my intent was not to "mess up" the map or make it inaccurate in any way. I have explained that I did not want to update the marijuana maps more, as I saw that I was not doing it properly, and so in the past I have asked more experienced users to update maps for me. In this case, it was overlooked, and I apologize. Perhaps instead of deleting the map from every location on Wikipedia, you could ask someone to simply update the map if you do not know how to do it yourself. In fact, the map needs both Massachusetts AND Michigan to be updated. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:25, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Mass changes of "marijuana" to "cannabis"

Interested parties may wish to comment at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Mass changes, marijuana/cannabis. –xenotalk 19:48, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Gerrit Dou: self-portrait with long-stemmed clay pipe (1645). One-hitters flourished in Europe when tobacco was a scarce, expensive import.

1. One or two editors have strenuously objected to any assertion on Cannabis smoking or One-hitter (smoking) that a narrower opening at the top of a "smoking" utensil permits better control feeding heat to the material and, in the case of cannabis, more successful vaporization of THC (per amount of expensive herb used). Admittedly "verification" is hard to find-- any peer-reviewed journal would probably be afraid to touch this subject for fear of being accused by rabid prohibitionists of "showing people how to use pot". Can anyone help find publications on the subject (crater-diameter and burning temperature)?

2. The same one or two editors are adamantly opposed to augmenting the article One-hitter (smoking) with pictures showing some history of one-hitters since 1645. (Admittedly under other names, but if it looks like a one-hitter it is a one-hitter.) Think it over, is it either fair or a service to our readers that One-hitter (smoking) is allowed to offer only 1000 bytes of information while Bowl (smoking), featuring text and pictures glamorizing hot-burning big-bowl utensils from which it is hazardous to inhale, rambles on for 5000? As you will see, one editor at Talk:One hitter (smoking) has vowed to suppress any effort to rectify this.Tokerdesigner (talk) 23:59, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Well, any info that's added should probably have a reference. Here are some possibilities. If they won't let you add stuff that's refed, then we'll deal with that. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 03:16, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanx for that tip. The Ed Rosenthal book (fourth from the top) would be ideal, but wouldn't you know, Google books doesn't always make page 39 available so I haven't had the nerve yet to cite it. Interestingly, Rosenthal accurately describes the procedure of holding the heatsource (lighter) an inch or so below the top opening of your device, but he is reviewing a sort of $10 glass chillum advertised as a vaporizer-- fair enough, that's how you can use it-- and holding the heat at a distance seems to be accounted for by a concern over breaking the glass, whereas my experience (which hostile editors will deride as Original Research) is that this is the way to assure that the heat will be precisely 200C/392F (correct cannabis vaporizing temperature) when it hits the load of sifted herb in the screened crater of your one-hit utensil, provided of course that the opening i.d. is narrow enough-- 5.5mm/7/32", 6.0mm or 1/4" are best available socket wrench sizes. The Ubie or Obie (I've forgotten its name and can't get to page 39, dammit) appears to have too big a crater volume to qualify as a one-hitter anyway; further you should have a long drawtube so this precise operation occurs far enough from your eyes that you can monitor it.
Efforts to introduce such information have been partially successful on Cannabis smoking, One hitter (smoking), Hashish and Vaporizer, blocked intermittently by some editors who objected via Wikipedia:NOTHOWTO, one guy has even blocked references to a wikiHow article even though in my opinion Wikipedia:NOTHOWTO expressly approves sending readers there. But isn't the whole point of an article title like Cannabis smoking that how-to info is to be offered? Nevertheless as always on WP, dogged (or do you say dagga) persistence may carry the day eventually.Tokerdesigner (talk) 21:30, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Category:Cannabis organizations

I have created Category:Cannabis organizations. The sibling categories and articles need to be organised. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 22:01, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Halp Meh!

I'm new here and I was wondering how I add an article to a category. You see, I created the page Black Ranger (Cannabis) and I wanted to add it to the template of Cannabis strains but I can't seem to be able to figure it out. So help. --Anondoesnotforget (talk) 21:15, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

I think the text would be better off under a sub-heading in the article Cannabis indica, because on its own, it is unlikely to ever contain enough information to warrant its own article. It sounds like an informal name so perhaps it ought to be referred to as a Cultigen. The word strain is I think a little bit too un-encyclopedic and woolly. --Aspro (talk) 21:49, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Agreed. The subject alone does not require its own article. While I am for the expansion of cannabis-related information deemed encyclopedic, it should be done appropriately. However, for future reference, Marijuana strains exists, and the Cannabis template can also be edited to display strains worthy of having their own article. --Another Believer (Talk) 04:20, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
Let's really get to work on documenting more strains. I have created the Blueberry Yum Yum and Black Ranger articles; I am now taking suggestions as to which one I will write next. --Anondoesnotforget (talk) 20:16, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Cannabis articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Cannabis articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Portal:Cannabis has been fixed.Moxy (talk) 07:09, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

A job well done! Thanks a million, Moxy! If this WikiProject had a barnstar (or maybe bongstar?) to award, you would definitely deserve one. :) --Another Believer (Talk) 16:40, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello everyone!

I am working for Wikipedia's new public policy initiative and I have selected this particular act to fix up. I did some work, but am looking to do more. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can add on to the article, or have any other advice? Thanks! Julietabulie (talk) 13:56, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

I urge editors to view my contribution to discussion referenced below for particulars:

The articles are not under attack. Tokerdesigner is being considered for a block at this time [1] and editors are working to undo the damage done by Toker's unsourced edits.Mjpresson (talk) 17:20, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the heads up, Mj. I have had problems in the past with some of Toker's edits. --Another Believer (Talk) 18:13, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Extended comments by Tokerdesigner
Mjpresson threw the "Undo" lever six (6) consecutive times to insert and maintain this spam cigarette advertisement photo atop Cannabis smoking instead of a less wasteful, less unhealthy option such as a small pipe that maximizes vaporizing and minimizes combustion. Explanation: "Image with more common use".
Nothing new about the cigarette industry having some special spamming-license to dictate cannabis coverage on Wikipedia. This guide to rolling papers (mostly made worldwide by a few cigarette company subsidiaries) stood atop the Cannabis smoking article for two years.

User:Mjpresson didn't wait for voting to close on sanctions against User:Tokerdesigner (proceedings initiated and urgently pressed by Mjpresson in June 2011) before showing his/her intentions concerning cannabis coverage on Wikipedia articles such as Cannabis smoking:

(cur | prev) 04:23, 14 June 2011 Mjpresson (talk | contribs) m (11,198 bytes) (Reverted edits by Tokerdesigner (talk) to last version by Mjpresson) (undo)

(cur | prev) 23:10, 13 June 2011 Tokerdesigner (talk | contribs) (10,898 bytes) (Remove WP:SPAM; see talk page) (undo)

(cur | prev) 19:53, 13 June 2011 Mjpresson (talk | contribs) (11,573 bytes) (replace image with more common use rather than the rarely-seen "Midwack" placed there by Tokerdesigner) (undo)

Other recent edits, and my concern:

  • "Reverted" any addition of caption information about harm reduction procedures; most recently: "A narrow joint burns less hot and delivers more cannabinoid per herb weight than a "fatty." This is both common knowledge and at the same time underground knowledge, widely suppressed by the tobacco industry through its media mogul mafia such as Murdoch. Providing it is a legitimate special practice which carries out the promise Wikipedia has extended to especially its youngesrt users.
  • Deleted over a dozen "See also" and other links between cannabis-related articles, especially to One-hitter (smoking), an article where readers could find out about alternative devices which can be used instead of unsafe hot burning rolling papers which waste cannabinoids, deliver carbon monoxide and other toxins, and produce the famous "drug effects" blamed on cannabis by Murdoch et al. thus supporting a predatory prison-industrial-government system.
  • In recent edits to Cannabis smoking, One-hitter (smoking) and other articles, deleted numerous photos serving as evidence of the variety of one-hitters available, including ethnic types, used for inhaling both cannabis and tobacco more safely, less expensively than with a "joint"-- as if intending to prevent readers from discovering alternatives to "joint" smoking; see discussion on the Talk:Cannabis smoking page.
  • Objected that the small inhalant pipe midwakh (made in UAE, not Egypt) "is" not used for cannabis, therefore the picture does not belong on cannabis-related articles.-- Irrelevant even if true; a midwakh, kiseru, sebsi etc. though traditionally used for tobacco, can be used for cannabis (instead of a joint or a big-bowl hot-burning pipe). The deleted photos served as direct evidence: if the object in the picture lookslike a one-hitter, it is a one-hitter. Any Wikipedia reader can order a midwakh, kiseru, sebsi, calumet, narrow chillum or other one-hitter on-line from mostly small companies and craftspersons; or, following directions in wikiHow.com: How to Make Smoke Pipes from Everyday Objects, make their own one-hitter for pennies. (Mjpresson has deleted all references to that article from cannabis-related WP articdles on the grounds that wikiHow is not a reliable source4 and that Tokerdesigner has contributed to the articles.)
  • Mjpresson deleted a picture of a bottle of dokha, a sifted tobacco product traditionally used in the midwakh, from the one-hitter (smoking) article where it served to illustrate the kind of sifting which makes it possible to use an herbal product-- any species-- in a one-hitter. This turned out to be the only picture currently available on WikiCommons illustrating the proper preparation (sifting) of any herbal product for use in a narrow-diameter screened inhalant-pipe.
  • Mjpresson has deleted diagrams showing interior construction of one-hitters (proposed appropriate harm reduction utensils) from talk pages where they were posted for consideration by other editors to be added as thumbnail illustrations to articles. Is it ever considered civil to delete proposals-- even if you think they are based on original research-- from talk pages? (Until now the only other editor who deleted such diagrams was User:Altenmann, Mjpresson's 2010 close partner in campaigning against edits by Tokerdesigner; Altenmann has been banned from editing Wikipedia since 11 April 2010 on charges of "sockpuppetry".)
  • Mj has deleted, and strongly protested against links to articles on wikiHow.com showing how to sift herbs for use in a one-hitter, how to make one-hitters, how to make a screen for a narrow crater utensil etc. on the grounds that they were written by Tokerdesigner (self-published source). Another editor objected that the wikiHow articles were an "unreliable source".

(a) The fact that they may have been "self-published" by Tokerdesigner or anyone is irrelevant; what counts is whether they are truthful and accurate, on which point Mj has been silent. In fact, NO EDITOR so far, having gone to those wikiHow articles and scrutinized them, has offered any detailed criticism of their failings, rather the objections seem to be based on an editor's personal bureaucratic interpretation of WP rules, or on a personal belief that WP forbids any reference to articles on other wikis or considers all such, regardless whether even examined, to be unauthoritative.

(b) To the contrary, ANY Wikipedia editor can sign in on wikiHow and re-edit or improve those articles in whatever way warranted to bring them up to proper standard to be referenced on Wikipedia! Therefore the expertness of their authorship is up to the competency of any and every Wikipedia editor, and you would think Wikipedia would have confidence in its editors to do a good job of preparing external information sources on subjects which (like "How to" info) are not considered encyclopedic enough to be covered on Wikipedia pages.

(c) the relevant paragraph at {{WP:NOTHOWTO]]-- please look it up!-- actually encourages sending readers to wikiHow for, it seems to me, this very purpose of helping them find the How-to info not presented in WP itself.

Therefore I urge all editors wishing to improve the value of Wikipedia cannabis-related articles to consider providing links to whatever external information will enable readers to escape the trap of smoking cannabinoid-destroying, carbon-monoxide-toxic "joints" by, in some cases, learning to make their own harm-reduction, dosage-restriction utensils.

New images available to the project

AB, I'm uploading some original HQ images to Commons (User:Mjpresson/Commons_files). I don't want to seem like I'm WP:OWNing any articles so I'm reluctant to use them myself but they are there for anyone in the project to use. I'll be adding some more today. Don't worry about owning... feel free to incorporate them into appropriate articles. While there are not projects/assessments at Commons, feel free to tag the files with the WikiProject Cannabis assessment tag if you use them on English Wikipedia. --Another Believer (Talk) 19:50, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Mj, the images are excellent, as I think I told you earlier. (a) What puzzles me is why, as you said somewhere recently, you are a "hashmaker"-- when it is so easy to just vaporize 25-mg. tokes of the unpressed kief in a screened one-hitter. Hashish is obsolete, designed for an era when everything depended on smuggling and storage. In Europe and elsewhere today children get lured into adding addictive tobacco just trying to get it to burn. (b) Also, aren't you insulted when after all your trouble making a superior photogenic product some careless oaf just rolls up a wasteful dose in a joint and combusts most of the unvaporized cannabinoids turning them into carcinogens? (c) Hey, if you don't want to seem like you're WP:OWNing articles, you might consider refraining from Reverting 6 straight times-- like on Cannabis smoking since June 13 (see photo above).
AB, whatever edits of mine those were that you feel caused "problems", it might not be too late to learn something from my mistakes if you can find time to dig out and list them for me, on my talk page or anywhere you consider best.Tokerdesigner (talk) 23:29, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Legality of cannabis in Colombia

The current page is incorrect. The Constitutional court found in June 2012 that possession of less that 22 grammes, yes, that´s 22 grammes, could not be penalised as this is the threshold for the "personal dose" ("la dosis personal"). The link below is to the report in national newspaper, El Espectador.

Uruguay has now decriminalized marihuana completely. Production is a state monopoly, however. The state plans to produce 27 tons a year to satisfy the demands of the country´s estimated 75,000 smokers.

How to increase activity?

Any ideas about how we could increase activity of this project? With nearly 50 members, we have the capacity to collaborate on articles, promote articles to Good status, etc. A newsletter distributed to members might be a great way to direct traffic back to the project and suggest ways of improving select articles, collaborating on tasks, etc. Any interest? Other thoughts? There is such a wide variety of articles under the WP Cannabis umbrella, from movies to strains to applications and events, that we have the opportunity to really show off our collaborative power and benefit the encyclopedia. --Another Believer (Talk) 19:56, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

I am continuing to restore WP:V to the cannabis articles after a long run of unreferenced claims, DIY, WP:OR, and creation and use of WikiHow entries to supply non-existent references. Only one user, Tokerdesigner, is protesting my actions as it involves reversions of his edits. Please all at the Project may review my edits and protest or communicate with me as needed. I would like to be doing this cleanup work in communication with the Project's consensus. I think I've done some good cleanup for now and plan to focus on finding and adding inline citations that are acceptable per WP:CITE. An issue is the Midwakh, an Egyptian tobacco/dokha pipe has been placed by Toker in every cannabis article. He has a thing. I will continue to replace these with more traditional cannabis utensils rather than a culturally singular obsession. Feedback by members? Mjpresson (talk) 23:24, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Also, Tokerdesigner's self referencing is preposterous. See my reversion of one here [2]. I don't know if the community has noticed this. I have reverted many of these by him.--Mjpresson (talk) 23:44, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
I have just noticed the info page on the Midwakh states: "Midwakhs are not used for the smoking of Cannabis." --Mjpresson (talk) 00:26, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Extended comments by Tokerdesigner
I have answered Mj's points about "Midwakh" (made in U.A.E., not Egypt-- see my photo captions that were in the One-hitter article before Mj deleted them) and about "self-referencing" in the "Articles under attack" segment (above).
The midwakh photo Mj says I "have a thing about" served as a good example of a one-hitter because it offered a clear view showing the actual diameter of the opening (but a narrower one, 5.5 mm, is even better; and I regret that no extended flexible drawtube was added). The kiseru photo was too technically indistinct at the crater end, even though readers could tell the crater was small. The "Cannabis pipe with bud" picture Mj supplied for the Cannabis smoking article misinforms readers by
(a) being so dark it's hard to see how narrow the crater is, so some readers will assume it's large, seeing the big unsifted bud lying next door;
(b) after recent deletion of a mention in the text that herb should be sifted to a small, vaporization-furthering particle size before use, readers will interpret this photo as a wordless "How-to" hint that sifting herb beforehand is unimportant; the result will inevitably be that users burn the herbakl material at high temperatures, destroying much cannabinoid and endangering health. Editors, please find and post a satisfactory photo-- or diagram-- of a utensil which is narrow enough for 25-mg servings.
(c) Especially if, as Mjpresson insists, a picture of a (from the look if it, 500-mg) "joint" must head the Cannabis smoking article (because it's "common"), then it is more critical that the Australian Department of Health warning against mixing with tobacco (deleted by Mjpresson) be restored to the article, because in Europe and other places, where "joint" actually means "mixed with tobacco", some thousands of children could thereby be protected against entrapment into "UNINTENDED NICOTINE ADDICTION". The same goes for articles like Hashish (6000 bytes a day readership according to an October 2010 survey) and Cannabis (drug) (27,000 bytes a day). The danger of being tricked into this "traditional" mixture with tobacco is in fact the Number #1 "drug" danger associated with cannabis and thus logically can not be omitted from the [[Cannabis (drug) article.Tokerdesigner (talk) 00:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Please stay on topic. If project members have any ideas about increasing activity, please share. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 00:55, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Please don't. Some cannabis-related articles are clearly more important than others. The importance scale is used WITHIN WikiProjects so that project members can determine which articles should be prioritized over others. Marking all articles the same importance level would only harm the project. Your time and energy would be much better spent improving articles related to cannabis, which may vary from laws to culture to strains to organizations (to everything in between!) --Another Believer (Talk) 22:50, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Yeah I was j/j :) I was influenced last night and thought it was terribly clever. anyway I was thinking that the laws are changing so rapidly that medical marijuana and medical marijuana card and the like will become anachronisms with the advent of outright legalization. Updated information on the legality of cannabis laws

I tried finding the talk page for Legality of cannabis by US state but it got real confusing real fast. I believe we should have people who live in the states with cannabis laws fact-check this page. In WA, Possession is 100% legal but sale and cultivation are only legal for medical use, the article doesn't reflect that. I-502 legalized cannabis AND gives the state 1 year to implement sales and cultivation regulations See WA I-502 "Legal possession and DUI limits go into effect on December 6, 2012, and the state has until December 1, 2013, to establish other key rules.[8] Until rules are established and licenses issued, retail sales to the general public are not allowed." see sources # 8&9 on that same page. Basically the article, as it pertains to WA will be correct on Dec 1, 2013, until then the information is incorrect. Pilsnermonster (talk) 21:30, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Green House Seed Company

Was recently at a meeting in Canada about the next Strain Hunters documentary that will be in part filmed in Canada.... I am only a University observer and did not mention my involvement with Wikipedia - but during that meeting they were talking about making articles here on Wikipedia about all the Cannabis strains they and other have (as seen here on this PDF.) Not sure how people feel about this or if ever strain is even notable enough for there own articles - but nevertheless we should keep an eye out for these articles and perhaps discuss NOW if they should even be allowed.Moxy (talk) 22:54, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Like any other article on Wikipedia, it should only exist if it meets the notability threshold. I imagine most strains should not have their own article. --Another Believer (Talk) 23:03, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Ideally, people interested in the coverage of cannabis on Wikipedia would focus on improving articles that already exist to quality status, as opposed to creating lots of random articles that will likely be deleted. --Another Believer (Talk) 23:45, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
I'm new to the internal workings of wikipedia so I'm not sure whether every strain should have it's own page, but looking around and reading a large chunk of the sections on cannabis, I do find it odd that Haborside Health Center and Arcview, which have gotten a lot of media don't have their own pages. I have some conflicts of interest and am new to the seemingly byzantine world of wikipedia etiquette but am glad to help out to make the Cannabis section better/more current, etc. as needed.Bumblepuss5124 April 10th, 2013. —Preceding undated comment added 21:42, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

this should never be done arjan from greenhouse seeds stole some of the genetics he has from shantibaba who helped start the company and produced the strains which made them win cups and get famous. Shanti split from arjan and took the real genetics with him. because of the illegal nature of cannabis, it is impossible to claim ownership over intellectual property, ripoff abound the market. Green House seeds is the largest offender in this case. strains which they call "trainwreck" "bubba kush" "chemdog" "super silver haze" are all rip off names of the originals which arjan and his company have never seen let alone obtained a legitimate cut of. Arjan has fooled and continues to fool the world with his strain hunters marketing scam to sell his inbred garbage rip off seed and his over priced chinese fertilizer. shame on wikipedia for allowing such a con artist to use this site for his own personal gains. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.3.68.133 (talk) 23:19, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Hash oil

Greetings! I've just been working on the Hash oil article, and I noticed that the talk page features some debate over figures and chemistry etc, yet the entry has laid somewhat neglected for years. I've added new sources and a new section but I'm most definitely not an expert (in chemistry at least!), so am asking for some extra input here. Style guide for marijuana vs marihuana vs cannabis

I saw these edits to [Legal history of cannabis in Canada] in my watchlist (an IP converting all instances of "marijuana" to "marihuana"), and almost undid them based on standard WP:ENGVAR procedure, but looking a little further, I guessed it might be more complicated due to parl.gc.ca using "marihuana" in official publications. Is there a preferred generic term in Canada? or for this Wikiproject (perhaps using "cannabis" throughout)? Should we match the spelling used in individual source that each sentence relies on (most newspapers seem to use "marijuana"), or use a consistent spelling throughout? I'm not sure, need more coffee, and thought you might have useful input. Thanks. –Quiddity (talk) 21:29, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, great question. I would definitely recommend being consistent throughout any given article, not changing solely based on the source used for a particular statement. This would be confusing to readers. For country-specific articles, I would recommend using the spelling most common within that country. That does not necessarily solve the problem for non-country-specific articles. When I established WP Cannabis, I went with cannabis rather than marijuana thinking the former was a more universal term and included the more science-related articles of the plant as well (marijuana tends to apply to the more social aspects of the plant, no?)... --Another Believer (Talk) 23:18, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
Cannabis is more universal as it is the commonly recognize botanical name. "Marihuana" is a colloquial mexican name adopted and popularized by the FBI with the introduction of prohibition of cannabis. Just because some publications in are 'official' does not mean they are correct. It would therefore be grossly incorrect to lump every other variety under marihuana or some other regional name. --Aspro (talk) 00:02, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
Agreed re: marijuana vs. marihuana. I suppose my response was referring more to marijuana vs. cannabis. Thanks for the additional input, Aspro. --Another Believer (Talk) 00:04, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
As the 'j' in hispanic is pronounced 'h' (or sometimes a soft 'k') both forms of spelling are incorrect as it this really the common name of the indigenous Mexican verity only. I think if this was pointed out in this article's lead paragraph then "marihuana" & marijuana needn't be mentioned again. Other English speaking readers out side the US would then understand that both the common hispanic name and its anglicized spelling of it, is just one North American verity that has-and-still-is being misused for cannabis-in-general by 'some' authorities but not others. We could also point out that the Marijuana tax act of 1937 was not a tax on just marijuana but all types of cannabis plants. We would thus avoid Wikipedia:Geographic imbalance and have a fully coherent article.--Aspro (talk) 02:38, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
Canadian here...and holder of a medical marijuana card. “Marihuana” appears in Canada's Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and is the term used on the cards - Julie Holland; Julie Holland M D (2010). The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis. Inner Traditions / Bear & Co. p. 434. ISBN 978-1-59477-898-8. and image of the card here ..However it is not the common spelling by any means - the idea of using cannabis is the best way to go well used in Canada (as seen here) and is the proper non controversial term anyways. Please note that 420 (cannabis culture), which is within this project's scope, has been selected as one of Today's articles for improvement. The article was scheduled to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Today's articles for improvement" section for one week, beginning today. Everyone is encouraged to collaborate to improve the article. Thanks, and happy editing!

If anyone has a snapshot, that would be great.

Also, I thought of starting it as a section in vending machine or medical marijuana or somewhere, but decided that a standalone made sense to avoid repetition of info. So, before proposing a merger, consider that. Cheers, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:43, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Active?

Is anyone on this project active? There is a discussion on WT:MED about several articles mutually within both projects' scope. See WT:MED#Medical cannabis. Lesion (talk) 15:47, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Local legalization

Hi guys, Im an outsider, and was looking for info on county and municipal level legalization. A few cities, perhaps dozens or hundreds even, have legalized or decriminalized marijuana. I think it would be useful to have this information. This CNN article lists four towns: "In November, Portland, Maine, followed Washington and Colorado's lead and legalized recreational use of the drug, while the Michigan cities of Lansing, Jackson and Ferndale resoundingly voted to let people older than 21 possess an ounce of marijuana on private property." I suppose I could at least create a stub, but I have limited connectedness to marijuana status other than token political support and the occasional article. Please talkback my page if/when you reply.--Metallurgist (talk) 00:51, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

@Metallurgist: I'd start here: Places that have decriminalized non-medical cannabis in the United States. --Another Believer (Talk) 00:54, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

This subject is close to my heart and I would like to see the quality of this article to be improved to receive a better rating. As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 04:57, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Cannabis vs. marijuana

--Another Believer (Talk) 17:25, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

  • Be sure to check out the poll: 72% of voters preferred "cannabis" over "marijuana". I guess I shouldn't be shocked that people that make search engines would consider ghits/bhits to be the most important metric when deciding the name of the article, and insist on "marijuana" on that basis alone. Dennis Brown |  | WER 23:07, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
Oh Gosh! Ms Hamilton has made me see the light. Why (?) should we need to depend on Google's sophisticated search algorithms to make life easy, when all, everybody really needs to do, is change their nomenclature (in research papers, articles, etc.,) to suit Bing. Then we can all relish in having a universally ubiquitous search engine that can find everything, (save perhaps, for the information we are actually looking for). But what the hell. As we can all become united, as members of microsoft’s happy flock of Sheeples. Yes bring it on. I'm all for it. Yarhoo!'</sarcasm> --Aspro (talk) 15:44, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet for Wikiproject Cannabis at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

U.S. state inventory

Time to see which states have a cannabis article and which don't:

I think enough info exists about cannabis culture, history and legislation for each state that articles are warranted. ----Another Believer (Talk) 18:39, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Hashish article

Hi all,

I've just added my name to the WikiProject list of editors. I'm new here, so please have patience with a newbie.

There are serious mistakes in the Hashish article, I was about to edit it but then I saw this project and though it would be better to tell you before. Can I edit cannabis-related articles freely? Do I have to ask for permission?

Thanks for your kind help,

Beren98 (talk) 10:30, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

@Beren98: Welcome to the project, and to Wikipedia in general. Yes, you are more than welcome to edit the hashish article, or any other which you intend to improve. Just please be sure to add references to reliable sources when changing or expanding articles. Do let us know if you have specific questions or concerns. Otherwise, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:22, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
@Another Believer: Thanks a lot for your quick answer, will try to make a good job!!;) ---Beren98 (talk) 15:16, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

I've just updated the erroneous info about the origins of hashish in Morocco. Moroccans didn't make hashish until the 1960s, while other countries/areas made it since centuries before! Beren98 (talk) 16:11, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Stony Awards

I stumbled across the Stony Awards page and noticed it hasn't been updated since 2010, but lists it as an active award. There's never been discussion on the talk page, so I thought I would post here, and see if there is someone who is more knowledgeable about the subject would be interested in updating the page, either with more recent winners or saying it hasn't been held. Also the page is a bit of a mess, with some years winners in a formatted table and others in a bulleted list below that. Thanks! Wikimandia (talk) 11:08, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

I made a bunch of US marijuana subcategories

Category:Cannabis in the United States was getting too crowded, so I made a bunch of subcategories including "companies", "media" and most importantly "by state" so that the topics that are specific to a given location are grouped together.

I hope this helps sort things out! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 04:11, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

@Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney: This is great. Thanks for your work and for the heads up! ----Another Believer (Talk) 04:13, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
No probs, Category:Cannabis in the United States by state is now up to 15 states; maybe folks can find at least one article for a bunch of other states so we can flesh it further. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 04:32, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

We need an article for Alaska Measure 2

We have articles on the other key ballot measures that pushed states over into the Legal sphere, but we don't have one for Alaska's Measure 2. Does someone want to just look at Washington Initiative 502 and use just its intro as a model to make an Alaska version so we have articles for the clinching measures in 4 states and DC?

Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 15:40, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Okay, got it done, and tossed in an extra one:
So that should cover us for Alaska for the moment, unless anyone wants to do a quick article for Noy v. State, the court case that struck down the 1990 illegalization. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 17:56, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Candidate for pilot testing, round one

Hello, WikiProject Cannabis!

On the recommendation of Another Believer, I am happy to announce that this WikiProject has been selected for the first round of WikiProject X pilot testing! Pilot testing candidates were selected on the basis for potential success of the WikiProject.

The goal of WikiProject X is to improve the WikiProject experience through research, design, and experimentation. On that basis, we've prepared a new WikiProject design template based around modules. These modules include features you are already familiar with, such as article alerts, but also new features such as automated work lists, a feed of discussions taking place on the 559 talk pages tagged by WikiProject Cannabis, and a new member profile system with opt-in notifications. The new design is available for your review at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cannabis/New. Please let me know what you think. (Note that some of the modules depend on output from other bots, meaning there will be some visual inconsistencies for now. I hope to resolve this in the long term.)

The next steps:

  1. If you are all satisfied with the design, I will implement it on the WikiProject page. Unless there are major points of contention, I hope to get this done by Friday, July 10.
  2. Using information from Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory/Description/WikiProject Cannabis, I will work on recruiting new members for the WikiProject. I will also reach out to your current listed members.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers, Harej (talk) 15:05, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

I like it. This project doesn't seem too active, however. Sizeofint (talk) 16:23, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
Hence the WikiProject X initiative and why I suggested that WikiProject Cannabis be a pilot testing candidate. This project has great potential but is pretty inactive. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:31, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
As Another Believer said: I intentionally picked projects where there would be "nothing to lose" if something went wrong with the new setup. I will also be working with the WikiProject to recruit new members, as I stated above. In any case, if there is no objection, I will be making the change in the next 24 hours. Cheers, Harej (talk) 01:12, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

We have a number of articles about states, but I see in the news that a tribe in South Dakota just legalized recreational marijuana and will start selling next year, so it's high time we had an article covering the legal status on tribal nations. There are some overall US cannabis articles that break down areas, and some mention the Reservations, right?

Would this be worth submitting to WP:Did you know?? I don't know the process, but it could be cool if someone else wants to. I think this makes a cool addition to our coverage here, brings out an angle we don't think about too much. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 23:51, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for starting this article. ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:09, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

New article Cannabis in Afghanistan, lots of room for expansion

Afghan Police eradicating cannabis in Kandahar in 2011

Getting on a roll with these. Again I'm really surprised that there's no article on Afghanistan, given how key a role they play in ganja history. I don't want to get myself burned out too fast, so so far I just cover the early parts of the history, up until 1978. Basically traditional cultivation, but then the Hippie Trail brought in a lot of foreigners stirring things up, and smugglers discovered the great deals on Afghan hash, so the king started cracking down due to increased awareness of the issue and US pressure.

There's a lot more to be said about cannabis as a fundraising crop during the Soviet war, under the Taliban, and then during the current war. Plus plenty of room for non-history technical sections about all the Afghan strains, indigenous preparations, etc. If anyone else wants to dive in, I could use a hand on this one.

By the way, we probably need a "Cannabis By Country" template to put at the botoom of each "Cannabis in XCountry" article. I don't think we need all the countries of the world listed, but just one that has the countries we have articles for now or expect to have soon. Also we could even break it down to also have US states/territories as a sub-box, and can do sub-boxes for any regions of the world that really merit an article separate from the main part of their country (like, I dunno, if the Basque Region had substantially different cannabis situation from Spain overall). Just an idea.

I do like the idea of challenging other WikiProjects to expand coverage of cannabis for their region/topic, though not sure of the best way to really get out the enthusiasm for that. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 19:19, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

👍 Like Another great article start! Thank you for your work on these. Honestly, there are many gaps in Wikipedia relating to cannabis. Starting articles like these make a great difference, and I would argue that there should be a "Cannabis in X" article for most countries and all 50 U.S. states. Each has their own legislation, policies, culture, level of social tolerance, business/industries, etc. Even beyond recreational cannabis, this extends to medical cannabis and hemp. This project has much work to do! My hope is that participating in WikiProject X will reinvigorate editors and expose the project to potential contributors. Thanks, again, for your work on these recent articles! ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:59, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
I went ahead and created Template:Cannabis by country. Feel free to make constructive edits to it or discuss further. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:05, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

New article: Cannabis in India

A ganja smoker in Kolkatta

I'm kinda surprised we didn't already have this, since India has a long history of cannabis usage. I only put a few basic facts in, and got some photos off Wikimedia Commons, but lots of room for expansion. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 12:30, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

Another great article start! I think it would be fun if we had an online edit-athon where we work to create/improve articles and upload cannabis-related images. We could ask country, U.S. state, and other regional WikiProjects to work on articles for their jurisdiction, recruit Wiki Project Med to work on medical cannabis articles, etc. Perhaps next April 20? :p (And I propose we NOT use the campaign title "Wiki Loves Weed"... I got enough accusations of bias for the title of the "Wiki Loves Pride" campaign!) ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:36, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Great contribution! Sizeofint (talk) 17:28, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Major props, by the way, to some colleagues from WikiProject India who did a significant expansion of this article, really gave it some great context and detail a couple days back! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 16:43, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

"Cannabis in (Country)" articles for creation and expansion

As per the threads above this one, I think there's a lot of space to add articles on cannabis in specific nations. Clearly, we could do all 200+ UN countries, though some of the articles would be pretty short, but I think in the immediate term we can focus on a few countries of key interest by several different criteria:

For "Cannabis in (Country)" articles, so far I'm angling at mine with some really basic questions to answer in each article:

  • Current legal status?
  • When was it first made illegal and why? If it has since been loosened, when and why?
  • Any special types of cultivation, local preparations, strains?
  • Current role in the local and international cannabis economy?

Most of those questions can be pretty quickly answered by checking around GoogleBooks with basic key terms like "cannabis banned egypt" and stuff like that. I will say though, be very careful of using casual/fun "stoner culture" books, since some I've seen are not at all academically rigourous and some of there historical content is just parroting online sites, and then bad/weak info just gets quoted around in a circle. As a minor example, the Moghul emperor Babur was fond of drinking bhang, and mentioned it in his book Babur Nama ("letters of Babur"). Some stoner site in some years past got confused and wrote "King Babur Nama used cannabis", and now a bunch of books just copying that have confused his name with the name of his book. Just one small example of what non-rigorous writers throw out as casual knowledge, and should not be cited in an encyclopedia article.

Those are my suggestions. Now how do we go about getting folks behind this, getting these knocked out (along with US state-level articles)? Would it maybe be workable to ask for help on some of the cannabist enthusiast forums online, or subReddits, and offer to help mentor them through composing articles, or will that just take up more time than it's worth? Maybe encourage more folks to add (non-incriminating) photos to Wikimedia Commons from their travels? Any other ideas? I like doing these, but I can't keep writing one every day indefinitely, and surely somewhere out there we have people who would enjoy researching and writing about cannabis. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 20:05, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

First and foremost, thanks for providing suggestions about how to go about creating these articles. Please don't burn yourself out creating these country articles--you are doing a great job and it would be better for you to enjoy creating articles when you have the time and interest, rather than stressing over them. :) I wonder if we could start planning for a cannabis-related edit-athon to be held next April (for 420?). That seems far away, but with proper planning, we could capitalize on the press' annual obsession with 420 and cannabis culture. We might even be able to get publications like High Times, The Cannabist, Cannabis Chronicles, etc, to cover the Wikipedia edit-athon. Again, I would advise against using the campaign "Wiki Loves Weed", but something like "Wikipedia + Weed" or "WikiProject Cannabis Edit-athon" should be appropriate. Of course we don't want people to post incriminating content, but keep in mind some people live in jurisdictions where access to cannabis, services and products are easily accessible. I would be interested in photographing local (Oregon, Washington) dispensaries and retail outlets and asking them if I can photographs strains in their inventory. My only concern is coming across tasteless... I wouldn't want headlines to read "Wikipedia advocates drug use"... the campaign truly needs to be about encouraging new and experienced contributors to add non-biased, reliable information about cannabis culture and history to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The edit-athon could either be a huge failure or a great success, but there is only one way to find out! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:15, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
I'll pace myself. :) Just added Cannabis in Guam though; third-highest ranked nation (though a dependent one in this case) for cannabis usage on Earth, per the UN. Really short stub, but I think I have the basics down. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 11:06, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Added Cannabis in Northern Mariana Islands too, another US territory with extremely high annual usage (22%). Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 17:31, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
It's a little dry and a little thrown-together, but here's Cannabis in Palau. Mostly I put in some details about how the claim that it's the top cannabis consumer on the planet might be based on poor stats, but it is a large consumer in whatever case. I have a vague intent to try to knock out the other Pacific/Oceania countries next. Do we have folks here who can specialize in knocking out the Latin America and Africa nations most strongly tied to cannabis? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 17:10, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
I've posted to the WikiProjects for Italy, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand, Morocco, Czech Republic, Canada (theirs is currently a redirect), Israel Spain and Jamaica asking if any folks there want to help out building articles in cannabis in those countries. I would say it's a long shot, but Wikiproject India really stepped up and did some amazing work on their topic's article, so it never hurts to ask around... Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 12:18, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
A little out of date, and has an anti-cannabis bias, but this book is Full View on GoogleBooks and has a ton of basic info about cannabis in a large number of countries. Someone could just skim through this book and knock out, for example, a half-dozen Caribbean Islands nations' articles for cannabis in under an hour: DIANE Publishing Company (1 August 1995). International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, 1995. DIANE Publishing. pp. 194–. ISBN 978-0-7881-2057-2.. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 12:58, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Added Cannabis in Papua New Guinea; interesting case where it was only introduced in the 1960s by expats (which appears to be the case in a lot of Oceania), and caught on in a big way. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 09:14, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Knocked out Cannabis in Jamaica, just a very cursory treatment, focused on its legal history: introduced in the 1850s, banned in 1913, decriminalized in 2015. It could really use expansion on Rastafari, cultivation and strains, cannabis culture, etc. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 22:35, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
I'm created Cannabis in Morocco and am working to expand it, since there is a lot to be said about this. I'm really surprised there are so few photos on Wikimedia Commons for it, since there gotta be thousands of tourists who take photos of hashish, pipes, smoke-houses, etc every year. Maybe there are some CC-licensed ones somewhere else on the Net that we can find? I also made Cannabis in Portugal the other night, but it was late and I wasn't really feeling it, so it's kind of a weak article with just some basics and could use shoring-up. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 09:43, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Great work, and remember, a short article is better than nothing at all! You might find this page helpful (see links in the "Searching Flickr" section to search for Commons-friendly images at Flickr. If you are not familiar, you can use this tool to transfer images from Flickr to Commons. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:07, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Neat one, @Northamerica1000:! I'll have to see if I can expand that one with some details on how cannabis was treated under British rule, and what changed after independence. Or do you already have plans for that expansion? I just added Cannabis in Chile, since it's the largest consumer in Latin America, and also has been in the news recently for conducting MMJ clinical trials, and having passed a legalization bill through at least its lower house of Congress so far, so it could potentially be the next legalizing nation depending how their Senate reacts. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 11:01, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
@Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney: and all other editors: My editing time varies lately. Feel free to improve Cannabis in Egypt at will. Since it is nominated for a DYK entry, my only request is that improvements should please conform with the DYK rules at WP:WIADYK and supplementary rules at WP:DYKSG. Regarding the latter supplementary rules, I request that any potential new paragraphs have at least one inline citation to a reliable source. North America1000 11:13, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
I added some small expansions to Cannabis in Egypt for further history, and also some of the historically-used ways of consuming (the latter I've just been describing as "cannabis culture" in various articles). Getting into the 20th century there's some interesting legal/treaty stuff about cannabis I'll try and add.
Update: I've added more, but also found a book with a lot of usable stuff, I'm juggling some other things, but here's my list of books that have some really good citeable material we can work in: Talk:Cannabis_in_Egypt#Possible_sources_to_look_through:
By the way, big ups to @OluwaCurtis: for creating Cannabis in Nigeria, looking great! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 08:30, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

Marijuana tourism

Yesterday, writing about another subject, found to my surprise that there is not yet an article on marijuana tourism, so created it as a redirect to drug tourism. Since then, I have prepared this draft: Draft:Marijuana tourism in the United States. Am seeking input or somebody to just move it to the appropriate article title and link it to existing subjects. Also, a little flabbergasted that there's no Cannabis in Washington (state), much of this research can probably be reapplied to that article. Cheers. — Brianhe (talk) 18:21, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I think we do need a Wikipedia article about Marijuana tourism and Marijuana tourism in the United States, though some of this information could also be presented in the articles Cannabis in Colorado and Cannabis in Washington (state). As you can see, there are many cannabis-related articles that need to be created and developed. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:24, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
Do you think it would be best to start marijuana tourism wihthe draft I've written? Brianhe (talk) 18:53, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
The draft is US-specific, so I think Marijuana tourism in the United States is better. The parent article Marijuana tourism, I assume, would be Amsterdam-centric. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:59, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

We need to deconflict the US template and US map; help?

I'm looking at the following map and the following template, and I'm noticing a lot of errors. I've managed to fix a number in the template, and also made a new "CBD oil" sub-section so we can distinguish between broader MMJ and CBD-only. I'm trying to trim the "Illegal" section to only show jurisdictions that have no Legal/Decrim/MMJ/CBD at all, just flat-out illegal. We don't seem to be covering industrial hemp in the cannabis maps/templates so I'm leaving that issue out of these (though I do make mention of it in the state-level articles).

Can a few more folks get eyes-on for this template and map so we can clean them up? There have also been quite a number of changes even in the last few months, so now that many states' legislative seasons are ending, this is a good time to edit the template, and find a qualified graphics guy to update the map for us.

I'm going to ask for help on an offsite location as well, just to get more informed eyes on this. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 15:44, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Cutoff for CBD legality and Decrim on the US map/template?

A person on another forum pointed out that we have North Carolina listed as a Decrim state, when NC has reduced its penalties but still counts even the simplest possession as a misdemeanor crime. I was digging into the definitions, and though I think that "Decrim" should mean "simplest possession is no longer a criminal offense, but only a civic infraction", it appears NORML is using the definition "simplest possession has no threat of jailtime". For the purposes of the map and template, can we have a project consensus on where the cutoff is for decrim?

Likewise, there are several states that "legalized" CBD oil, but only for federally-approved limited clinical trials. Again, you could argue that they didn't "legalize" squat, they just agreed to let their state university do slightly controversial medical testing. On the map right now we have Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky as light blue, and they only have clinical trials, and we have Oklahoma as uncolored, but they have the same trials as Alabama as far as I understand. Same question: can we find a consensus here on the project, and then include a clear definition (and/or link to the discussion) in the metadata for the map and template so we can maintain consistency? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 11:28, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

I would say decriminalized means you cannot face criminal charges for possession. "Legalized" with regard to CDB oil should be those states that allow use for non-research purposes IMO. Sizeofint (talk) 16:09, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Do we need an article for CBD oil?

crossposting at WP:Pharmacology

I'm not an MMJ expert, but it seems weird that we don't have an article on it since it's the only form legal in an increasing number of the more conservative U.S. states. We have Cannabidiol about the base chemical compound, but not about the common medication that's increasing in use. Any medical folks want to help get this one rolling? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 11:10, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

It seems to me that the information could be in the cannabidiol article. Unless there is an excessive amount of material I don't think we should split the chemical information from its medical uses and legal status. Sizeofint (talk) 15:43, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Repost: U.S. state inventory

Time to see which states have a cannabis article and which don't:

I think enough info exists about cannabis culture, history and legislation for each state that articles are warranted. ----Another Believer (Talk) 18:39, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Reposting this, just made a new article Cannabis in Maine. Note also that while some states might not have a dedicated page, they may have a category at Category:Cannabis in the United States by state which collects articles around the topic. Also I added another column to the above list to cover non-states. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 16:23, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Just for kicks I went and knocked out Cannabis in American Samoa; apparently one of the harshest places in the US, with a 5 year mandatory minimum sentence for any amount of marijuana, even if prescribed elsewhere. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 00:43, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Added Cannabis on American Indian reservations last night and Cannabis in Vermont today. Any preference on which states really should have a state-level article but don't? Again note that some states that lack a specific page already do have a Category with several pages. I'm also open to suggestions as to what countries should have a "Cannabis in X" page and don't. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 12:03, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Saw in the news that Wyoming is working on a 2016 ballot initiative for MMJ, so created Cannabis in Wyoming. Can someone also knock out a "Cannabis in the US" template that has the states on it, and we can put that at the bottom of the state articles? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 08:12, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
Added Cannabis in South Dakota, since they had failed ballot initiatives for medical in 2006 and 2010, and are attempting both MMJ and decrim in 2016, plus the Flandreau Sioux tribe, located within SD, is fully legalizing on their reservation. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 20:53, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
We may need to modify Template:Cannabis in the United States. Technically, navboxes should only include entries for actual Wikipedia arcticles, so this navbox is not being used correctly. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:32, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
Added Cannabis in Montana; like you said, every state pretty much has a story to tell, from how they first banned cannabis, to any later legislation, and in a lot of cases some commentary on cannabis culture and economy. Montana sounded like there wouldn't be enough to even write about, but I found some really interesting stuff. Suggestion: on the articles like Legality of cannabis by U.S. jurisdiction, at some point can we start linking the names of states to their cannabis article, rather than just their state general article, so that people who want to read more about that state's cannabis situation can do so? And there are probably other articles like that, where they had no links to state-level cannabis articles since those largely didn't exist until our recent drive. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 10:25, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

Added Cannabis in Nebraska, surprisingly one of the earliest states to decriminalize, and one that has more interesting Botany info than usual due to having lots of feral "ditch weed" hemp. I also just did Cannabis in Georgia (U.S. state), and I notice that we don't have any article on CBD oil (we have hash oil, but that's different). Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 15:15, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

In my ongoing tour of our nation's... "less exotic" states, I knocked out Wisconsin, where they just legalized CBD oil last year. I genuinely think we can have something worth saying on basically every state here, so that's my ambition. But I could definitely use some help, particularly since we must have a few people interested in doing at least short articles for the states where there's high-profile stuff going on life in Ohio, Florida, etc. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 11:06, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
Another "sounds boring but actually interesting": Cannabis in Utah. Apparently there's controversy as to whether their 1915 prohibition (one of the first in the country) is based on Mormon doctrine, or just a copy-paste of a larger piece of California's 1913 drug law. Also added Cannabis in Tennessee, Cannabis in Alabama, Cannabis in Arkansas, Cannabis in Louisiana, and Cannabis in Idaho. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 12:42, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
I've now covered all the states/territories in the "Illegal" field, except for Pennsylvania. Anyone have a strong desire to cover that state? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 11:51, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
Added Cannabis in Puerto Rico (been away for a bit, life busy), so now we're only missing one US Territory with Cannabis in United States Virgin Islands, and I'll aim to knock that out soon. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 15:17, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
And now with Cannabis in United States Virgin Islands, that should cover us for all the populated US non-State jurisdictions, right? The Minor Outlying Islands have almost no people whatsoever and no permanent settlement, so unless someone has some pretty clever ways of finding a little cannabis law or history on those areas, I think we're now down to just knocking out the rest of the 50 states. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 10:55, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
Added Cannabis in Oklahoma, so now just short South Carolina and Pennsylvania to have completed all the Banned States and all the CBD Only states. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 16:46, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

To let everyone know, I will be making a change to the {{Load WikiProject Modules}} Lua module, used on this project to render the different sections. This change involves, among other things, moving the different section headers out of the subpages and onto the main WikiProject page. This change will make the WikiProject easier to use and maintain. During this change, there may be a brief time window where the WikiProject page looks broken. Once the changes are finished, everything should be restored to normal. If not, purge your cache and it will work. If there are any bugs, please let me know promptly on my talk page. Cannabis shop vs. dispensary

Same thing? Please see here to help figure out the commons categories. Thank you!!!! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:58, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

I would say they are the same thing. In Oregon, where cannabis is now legal, "dispensaries" were available to medical marijuana cardholders only. Now that anyone (of age) can purchase and consume cannabis, the word "dispensary" is used less frequently. I wonder if something like "Cannabis shops" or "Cannabis retail outlets" is appropriate? ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:23, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Cannabis Taxonomy Update

Hi all, I'm not a member of this project, but I think everyone here should be aware that botanical and taxonomic works now accept Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis as Cannabis sativa ssp. indica and Cannabis sativa ssp. ruderalis respectively. I think it may be time to move the articles into these new locations and perhaps update Cannabis sativa to further acknowledge this. What are the thoughts here?

I understand the taxonomy is still debated, so what are the views held here? --MCEllis (talk) 05:37, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Cannabis map in great need of updating

There have been several major changes since this map was last updated, most notably the recent legalization of MMJ in Pennsylvania. Now would be a good time to update the map since the pages featuring it are likely to see a lot of views between now and the November election, and to the best of my knowledge there aren't likely to be major changes between April and November this year.

  • Pennsylvania needs to be colored for Legal MMJ
  • Utah allows CBD oil, so should be colored for "non-psychoactive"
  • there are several other states that have "legalized clinical trials" but I think the consensus here was that those fall below the bar of being noted on the map since it's a very minor deviation from just plain illegal. So no change needed for Oklahoma, etc.
  • I would also suggest that someone review the color used for Decrim, since I'm color-vision impaired and have difficulty distinguishing that color from the neighboring colors, so that could mean that as many as 5% of readers (mostly male) may have trouble reading that map, so a minor coloring tweak for visibility would be cool.

I've filed a request with the Graphics Lab here, so hopefully one of them may swing by to speak with us about what needs to be changed: Wikipedia:Graphics_Lab/Map_workshop#Updates_needed_for_map_of_Cannabis.2FMarijuana_in_the_United_States

Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 20:36, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

To review before changes, you request:
  • Pennsylvania labeled for Jurisdiction with psychoactive medical cannabis.
  • Utah labeled for Jurisdiction with non-psychoactive medical cannabis.
  • Making the map more colorblind friendly
Is that all correct?

Hello @Houdinipeter:, your three summaries above are correct, and the Colorbrewer example you show is indeed more readable for me (male with deuteranopia). Shall we give it a moment in case anyone else has any further tweaks to point out, or is it just as easy to draft something now and change later if a latecomer makes another point? Thanks so much for your help on this, these are some significant needed map changes right at a time where this issue is getting a lot of media attention. Draft:Marijuana (cannabis)

Found this Draft:Marijuana (cannabis) - I think we have talked about not having this before. What do others think here. I do think an article with the title "Marijuana" going into details on the usage is warranted because of how many countries laws use the term....its not like other slag terms pot or ganja. We do have Marijuana (word). Again what is the best way to inform our readers here....we have Hemp that explains alot.....should we do the same for Marijuana as its a legal term be it right or wrong as a term? If so where at Marijuana (word) or draft title or some other title....keep in-mind many many articles redirect from the word Marijuana to Cannabis (drug) the section "Marijuana"-- Moxy (talk) 04:18, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

As the article author I want to note that I do not know what the title of the article should be, but I think the article deserves to be a stand alone article on wikipeida for all the same reasons there exists a hemp article. It is my contention that many sources indicate marijuana + hemp = cannabis. Specifically neither hemp nor marijuana alone are the same as cannabis, they are each parts or portions of cannabis. From the original 1937 marihuana tax act alone we know that marijuana is only a portion of the plant per the definition here: (b) The term "marihuana" means all parts of the plant Cannabis sativa L., whether growing or not; the seeds thereof; the resin extracted from any part of such plant; and every compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such plant, its seeds, or resins; but shall not include the mature stalks of such plant, fiber produced from such stalks, oil or cake made from the seeds of such plant, any other compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such mature stalks (except the resin extracted therefrom), fiber, oil, or cake, or the sterilized seed of such plant which is incapable of germination. Most every government who regulates marijuana as a controlled substance uses a very similar or derivative definition. So if there is a better title, please let me know and I'll move it right away. Thanks for your help everyone! --Potguru (talk) 04:33, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
Old surpassed laws have the terms all messed up and contradict themselves. Its why the hemp industry collapsed in the USA. Good to see old laws like that are being changed with better wording and definitions....but in no way is the uniformed around the world...not even the spelling used for "marihana" . This is why I think we need to say more on the topic... hemp like marijuana have different meanings......be they right or wrong - thus we should explain.-- Moxy (talk) 04:54, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
An analogous situation is opioid which has had varying definitions over time. I agree we need to discuss present and historical definitions somewhere. Sizeofint (talk) 01:58, 11 May 2016 (UTC)
Marijuana is a slang term, MaryJane in Spanish, which you all obviously know. The name of the plant is Cannabis. The fact that politicians can't even spell it right, Marihana, Marihuana, etc, is even more reason to ignore them as garbage and stick with the scientifically-used and well known word. Changing "Cannabis" articles to "Marijuana" is like changing "Heroin" articles to "Smack". The plant's scientific name is cannabis as in Cannabis Sativa or Cannabis Indica, it amazes me that anyone would waste their time on such an endeavor when we are working to be an encyclopedia. Lipsquid (talk) 23:13, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
Yes I agree we should not change the word....but what about this draft? Should some of the info be moved to Marijuana (word) our is your impression the same as me...its a Wikipedia:Content forking and should be deleted? -- Moxy (talk) 23:51, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
Use the article to say that different places have different definitions of Marijuana, that it is slang for cannabis and that it usually refers to the parts that have THC, but it can very from location to location. Or you could just delete it. Lipsquid (talk) 02:08, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
The name of the plant marijuana comes from is cannabis, but just like hemp is a portion of cannabis (that which has less than 0.8, or 0.3 or 0.03% thc) so too is marijuana a portion of the plant (having 0.03% or more THC) which does not include the stalk, seeds or roots. In most western (english speaking) countries "marijuana" is defined in law as the "drug containing portion" of certain cannabis plants whereas cannabis is the name for a variety of species of plants (at least 7 distinct strains fall under the term "cannabis", some of them have no marijuana at all) and I'd like to ad that in my decades of personal experience in the US and abroad I've never known any english speaking person to smoke "cannabis", they all smoke "marijuana" or "hashish" or a "spliff". The comparison to heroin is appropriate; we have an article about the drug preparation heroin, separate from an article about the plant it comes from and we should make the same distinction between the drug preparation with this plant as well. From my perspective it is like well meaning, but uninformed, editors want to change every occurrence of the word "heroin" on this site with "Papaver somniferum" which I hope you can all see makes little sense. The same idea holds true with mescaline and peyote, one is a plant the other is the drug from the plant. Because this is an encyclopedia, we need to get the details right so we should follow the lead of peyote and opium and make marijuana a separate and distinct article. --Potguru (talk) 00:30, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Think it makes more sense to rename Hemp as Cannabis (industrial uses). In Europe, any farmer still has to have a cannabis licence. Hemp is an old colloquial common name for the whole plant, hence 'hemp fibre', 'hemp seed', hemp oil, etc. Hemp is the old common name for the whole cannabis plant including cannabis seed, cannabis oil, cannabis fiber etc, that gets imported from countries where the THC content is higher in those native verities. So the existing Hemp article should be corrected to make it clear that in Europe only certain cannabis strains are allowed to be grown for non-medical purposes. Could mention also, that in the US, taxation only applies to certain parts of the cannabis plant. Neither the taxman nor DEA can be considered to be authorities on botanical taxonomy so we should use them as our guide.--Aspro (talk) 01:49, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Totally agree, taxonomy is taxonomy and saying marijuana is cannabis with more than 0.03% THC because some politicians in Kansas/Colorado/Kenya or Turkmenistan say that is the true definition is arbitrary nonsense and not encyclopedic. Lipsquid (talk) 02:06, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
I agree aswell...moved hemp...will add some real sources in a bit..it needs work.--Moxy (talk) 03:04, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
I got a new editors removing all the sources I have added to the Hemp article not sure why ...but think its a good idea to watch the article for said actions agin. -- Moxy (talk) 15:04, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Got it back to Cannabis (industrial uses) again after his revert back to hemp. Watch-out for the 3 revert rule (new editor)! Placed a comment on his TP too.--Aspro (talk) 17:18, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Everyone should discuss this issue Talk:Hemp#Move to Cannabis (industrial uses)? You discuss a page move on the article's talk page, and reach a consensus there, on moving it, not here on a related project page. Especially not an article that has had the same name for many, many years (meaning, its name has been okay with thousands of editors). HempFan (talk) 20:58, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Protocol for rationalizing nomenclature

Following on from Moxy's comment above that “it needs work” so too, do many other article that use the term hemp in their text. I think it would help if we could start off with some consensus as to how to we go about it, so we can speed it up by continuing to-pull- together. Looking through the many occurrences of 'hemp' most could (and should - I think) be replaced by simply substituting the word 'cannabis' but not all. Give an example: Hemp milk is the obvious title, as that is what is is known by and sold by. So in other words: descriptive nouns like these should stay. However, in this article's lead it says “Hemp milk, or hemp seed milk, is a plant milk made from hemp seeds that are soaked...” Although this occurrence of the word hemp now redirects to [[cannabis (industrial uses)]], I think is should be changed to [[cannabis (industrial uses)|cannabis]] to indicate explicitly and on the page, that it is derived from the cannabis plant. There are no psychotropic effect from milk made from any of the many cultivars of cannabis as the THC and other canabinoid levels are too low. This accuracy is importunate though for anther reason. Some food manufactures quite legally buy vegetable oils and seed meal containing some derived from cannabis on the world markets then use it in their products. Some schools do drug scans on their pupils which can now detect pico grams of cannabinoids and so create false-positive indications of of drug use (which leads to al-sorts of problem for the child, their parents, understandings of trust/parental family bonding and so on). So it is important for our readers to be accurately informed that hemp 'is' cannabis and that these products are widely available (in many different parts of the World) as hemp-milk, snack-bars, culinary (kitchen) oils, etc., all of which are a possible sources of false-positives. So as we get time, is it OK that we do a find&replace on the word hemp throughout WP? I need a Devil's Advocate on this, as sometimes the word hemp might be better replaced with the descriptive noun industrial cannabis or left as it is. --Aspro (talk) 16:43, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Good to see an informed editor....I have sourced the hemp article...but it got moved back from cannabis (industrial uses) some simply like the terms they know.--Moxy (talk) 16:51, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
I agree we should come to a concensus. Using a source Moxy pointed to earlier we have definitions from Colorado, arguably the world leader on the subjects of marijuana, hemp and cannabis as they were the first state to regulate hemp and marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. The state website reads: "Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana - Amendment 64, section 16 (d) to the Colorado Constitution defines Industrial hemp as ‘a plant of the genus Cannabis and any part of that plant, whether growing or not, containing a Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of no more than 0.3% on a dry weight basis. Under Colorado State law any Cannabis with a percentage of THC above 0.3% is considered marijuana". So if the scope of the article is Colorado the only possible way to achieve concensus is for us to agree that the provided definition is accurate and assuming all the cited sources say the same thing (they do) then we should have no problem accepting the terms marijuana and hemp as defined in the context of Colorado. Now if we find other definition in other jurisdictions we can adopt those, but because wikipedia requires articles to be verifiable it should not be hard to accept the correct term when describing whatever portion of the plant one is discussing. Note: The definition used by Colorado is nearly identical to the definition found in the 1937 Marihuana tax act, arguably the beginning of marijuana and hemp regulation. Searching and replacing "hemp" with "cannabis" is a really bad idea though and likely what got us into the problem in the first place when someone decided to do a search and replace on "marijuana" replacing all occurrences with "cannabis" even though the cited sources do not support that term. --Potguru (talk) 08:17, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

I Wish we could get this editor to be more constructive over a topic ban....but just so much to deal with. I wound support this...but have no clue how to go about it. Been here long time and never really had to do this type of thing before....that is a topic ban request. That said what should we do with the moves? lets see what others say here....last time I moved an article it was not a smooth ride.--Moxy (talk) 23:31, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
I think this editor needs to stop and gain consensus before making these sweeping changes. We need to decide at a site level how to handle the titling of these articles. Sizeofint (talk) 23:36, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Some people don't play well with others. I don't care one way or the other as long as the articles stay consistent, I don't smoke. I would go straight to asking for a topic ban, but this is the place to start if you want to be nice about it. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard Lipsquid (talk) 23:41, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
We are going to have to do something...after being asked to slow down they move more stuff....even Cannabis policy of Colorado stating the term cannabis is not used ...this is simply wrong as the state uses cannabis as the parent term then defines MJ and Hemp as seen here. The editor is not reading up on the topic ....just edits what they think is right. WP:NOTHERE---Moxy (talk) 00:13, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

That is simply not true. I care a great deal about concerns raised by fellow editors and when I disagree I discuss the issue with that editor directly, on their talk page. (Not on a random page like this one that said editor may never find). --Potguru (talk) 08:20, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
Good. Cannabis articles are already heavily edited and we don't need the disruption of someone who won't edit collaboratively. Already opined to support the topic ban there. If you are going to edit like a zealot, you don't need to edit at all. Dennis Brown - 10:39, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
Looks like the only thing the editor cared about was the naming and when topic banned in that limited fashion, decided to quit instead. I think it can be taken as withdrawn if still an issue. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:03, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Finishing off the by-US-state articles

Just checking in to remind folks that we're still short articles on several US states, including some that are pretty important for current cannabis politics.

Take a squint at the template, see if there are any you feel like adding; I just knocked out Rhode Island today. With just a little effort from a few editors, we could have an article for every single US state and territory in a matter of weeks. Just me alone I've probably done 20+ (including all the US territories) so it wouldn't take much to knock out the whole country!

Yeehaw, added Cannabis in Texas. Only had time to get in the pre-current history stuff (which is still pretty interesting) and will try to go back later to update on current legalization efforts and CBD, unless someone who knows that topic wants to help flesh it out. {{MPC}}: redirect retarget request

{{MPC}} is an unused lightly-used (16 transclusion) template-redirect to {{Marijuana Party of Canada}} which I would like to use as the new home for {{MPCdb}} at WP:Astronomy. {{MPCdb}} produces links like: MPC, so {{MPC}} is the most appropriate template name. {{Mpc}} (unused, but untagged atm) & {{MPCdb}} would then both redirect to the new {{MPC}}, but if and only if I have support from both WikiProjects. For reference, {{Marijuana Party of Canada}} is currently transcluded 9 times, and {{MPCdb}} is currently transcluded 582 times.

Since {{MPC}} is part of WP:Cannabis & WP:Canada, I'm cross-posting at both WP pages. Thanks for your input.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  17:35, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Can we file states only by *highest* category in Template:Cannabis in the United States?

In the template Template:Cannabis in the United States, states like CO and AL are listed as "Legal", "Decriminalized", and "MMJ".

I would submit this is redundant and crowds the template; is is thus far I think unprecedented for any state to have Recreational and not MMJ, and even if they did it wouldn't be a significant deviation from Legal. Similarly "Decriminalized" just means there's some way to deal with possession short of criminal charges, so that's implicit in Legal too.

Can we slim down the template by making sure that states/jurisdictions are only listed in their highest designation, akin to what is shown on the main US map of cannabis legality? This will matter all the more if multiple states legalize in a couple weeks, so now is a good time to plan it before we see a burst of interest in the pages using this template. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 06:09, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

I agree with your assessment. I support this for the legalized category. Decriminalized and medical should be listed twice though because some states have both, some have one or the other.Terrorist96 (talk) 13:52, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
Done, made the change, and it might look even more prominent when we update next week. I'll go ping a graphics guy so we have someone on standby to update the map if/when things change.
Another proposed change: is it really significant to divide legal into "States" and "Other"? If we just make it one block we don't need to label it (so we can lump DC in with the states), and the other areas listed aren't hugely pertinent to list. The Flandreau tribe legalized but burned their crop under threat of fed interference, and in whatever case individual reservations will quickly get too complicated to cover in just a template. And city-level legalization is largely symbolic so listing Maine towns doesn't add much either. It's already a pretty busy template, so what say we just have "Legal" be one single block listing the four and DC now, and add more as needed? EDIT: I'm going to BEBOLD and just change it for now since it makes a lot of sense, let me know if anyone insists on changing it back, feel free to revert. I'm posting on the three most recent editors of the US Cannabis map, asking if one or more can volunteer to relatively promptly update the map, optimally the day following the US election provided there aren't multiple states still in question due to recount or whatnot. Linking those folks into this post now. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 20:31, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Okay! I'm willing to help. Should I do my own research? Houdinipeter (talk) 21:06, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks @Houdinipeter:! Probably the best bet is that you and I and whoever else is following confer here following the election as to what states need to change to what, just to make sure we don't miss anything.
While we're changing the map, anyone else notice any errors? On the current map,
  • Ohio is mis-marked since they legalized full MMJ (not just CBD) in June 2016 *and* also are Decriminalized (so color just below full legal,
  • Utah legalized CBD oil in 2015, so that needs to change to CBD color
@HP, if it takes two seconds for you to make those above changes we could fix those now, but I totally understand if it's more laborious and you want to wait for the larger changes next week. If anyone else sees any mistakes on the current map, please post here to point them out. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 21:53, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
For someone other than HP, on Legality of cannabis by U.S. jurisdiction, the color of the chart no longer matches the color of the maps since we changed the color scheme for ease of reading. Does anyone smarter than me have an idea for how to smoothly Find-Replace those colors to match the map for continuity? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 21:53, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
Did Ohio and Utah. Is the asterisk in the description right? And I'll look into the chart when I get the chance. Houdinipeter (talk) 23:46, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
@Houdinipeter:, I don't see color well (which is why I put in the earlier request to have the map rendered more color-blind friendly), but does your current version have Utah as "legal non-psychoactive"? To my eyes it looks like it's labeled "Decriminalized" but I could be seeing it wrong. And yes, Illinois is decriminalized as well as MMJ so that should move to the Decrim-MMJ darker color. Mississippi is CBD-Decrim so the one single category that doesn't fit the key, so best filed as CBD (as it is now) rather than complicate the chart. Thanks for stepping up! I'm happy to keep pulling the data if you've got the visual part down. There's also a global map of cannabis, File:World-cannabis-laws.png; if that one's easy to update we can at least do the blue "Legal" new ones the day after election, but I understand if that one is formatted in a trickier way, just US one is fine for now if so. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 01:14, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Okay @Houdinipeter:, I didn't check everything from scratch necessarily, but I made sure that every state fell into at least one box, and caught a few map mistakes:

  • Turns out there are *three* states, Missouri, Mississippi, and North Carolina that are CBD-Decrim. Instead of the asterisk, how about we just diagonal stripe them as a combo of CBD color and Decrim color?
  • Utah should be CBD color, not Decrim color
  • Wyoming should be CBD color, not Decrim color Sorry, Wyoming already is CBD color, no change
  • UPDATE: Georgia should be CBD color, not MMJ
  • UPDATE: Illinois should be Decrim-MMJ, darker
  • UPDATE: Oklahoma should be CBD, not Illegal
  • UPDATE: that should be it for now, thanks!

I'm bouncing the template off of current news articles or NGO blogs, and then comparing those to the map. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 01:42, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

@Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney: It's too bad that the supposedly colorblind friendly color scheme doesn't work well for you, though I suppose that makes sense because it's hard for me to see. But before making more changes I think we should make a new quick chart (smaller than the one on the article) of what states should be what and make a new color scheme with the decriminalization and MMJ states striped. Houdinipeter (talk) 02:17, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
Made the chart I mentioned. Can you double check it so I can figure out the color scheme? User:Houdinipeter/LegalCannabisMapChart —Preceding undated comment added 03:35, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
@Houdinipeter:, I went through your chart, made my corrections, and dated. I would suggest:
  • There's no point making any graduations within Legal Recreational, so any state which reaches Legal should just be one simple "maxed out" color.
  • States which have both full MMJ and decrim are pretty common, 13 states, so I'd incline to make that one color vice having a separate marking
  • The 7 states and 2 territories which have zero medical and no decrim, I like how the current map marks them as blank-color
The question is how to mark the less-common cases without complicating the scheme too much
  • MMJ and no decrim is 7 states
  • CBD and no decrim is pretty common, that's a lot of the American South; one color seems good for that.
  • CBD and Decrim is less common, I think just Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina
  • Zero medical *but* Decrim is pretty uncommon, I think just Nebraska
(to your previous point, I think the current color scheme works for my vision, it was just that Utah is incorrectly colored as Decrim when it should be just CBD) Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 06:56, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Looking good overall, but small mistake: North Dakota and Arkansas don't have decriminalized, so they should be the lighter shade like Arizona and Montana are. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 00:48, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
@Chase1493:, @Houdinipeter:, can one of y'all change the color of Arkansas and North Dakota down one step? They're labeled as Medical/Decrim when they should just be Medical. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 03:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Do we need to do some consolidation of multiple overlapping US cannabis articles?

We've almost completed the goal of having an article for every single US state and territory. Right now we have a number of articles covering national-level cannabis topics for the US, and I have some concerns that we may be spreading ourselves thin in terms of having to deconflict/synchronize so many overlapping articles:

My initial suggestions:

My main goal is just to make sure that we don't have six different articles all trying to explain, say, Ohio in detail, and whenever a state changes we need to run to six different articles to all update one detail about them. More consolidation would make this topic simpler, and increase our degree of accuracy while decreasing the effort needed to keep current. Thoughts? I'm going to post an invitation to discuss on the Talk pages of the current contributors for each of the above. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 22:21, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

Check out the source for the Gun laws in the United States by state article, utilizing transclusion to keep the data synced with each state's article.Terrorist96 (talk) 23:38, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Btw a better solution for your edit here might have been to simply update the wiki-link to each state to instead point to the cannabis article.
https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Legality_of_cannabis_by_U.S._jurisdiction&diff=next&oldid=747700058 Terrorist96 (talk) 23:41, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
@Terrorist96:, do you mean make the state's name in the far left column of Legality of cannabis by U.S. jurisdiction be the link instead of having "main article" templates? I thought about that, but a) the state name link is actually a function of the "flag" template and not a normal link, and b) that way of doing it is much less visible so I don't know that casual readers would easily grasp that there was a larger article they could refer to.
I considered transclusions, but I couldn't think of a way to do it concisely other than just transcluding the first sentence, for example, and that seems like it would get repetitive. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 23:56, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Maybe a basic summary table similar to the gun laws article would work. I dunno. Seems like a lot of work. Terrorist96 (talk) 00:05, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
The gun law pages are transcluded templates for all 50 states; both laborious and also not easy to just scan through them all (especially on mobile devices). My suggestion overall is to keep the main structure for the "legality by jurisdiction" page but give up on trying to update details on each state individually, refer readers to the individual state page, and just make sure that the chart colors/columns and map are up to date. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 08:09, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Take a look at Indiana–Maine on this page: Legality of cannabis by U.S. jurisdiction. I've modified just the ones in that section as examples. Is a bulleted list of dates too sparse? Should we have footnotes on the dates, or just leave the footnoting to the main article for the state itself? More narrative writing, or more list-style bulleting? The article Cannabis in the United Kingdom had kind of a rambly history section missing cites, and a huge section that rambled on about price differentiation by the gram (cited largely to user-generated sites).

I rewrote the lede, fixed the cites for the history of hemp rope, removed the silly price section, and wrote a few sections about how cannabis came to the UK in the 1800s as a foreign novelty, was proscribed in 1928, and gained ground as a drug in the 1960s. If anyone is interested in British cannabis issues, I could use some outside eyes to take a look and help refine it. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 23:00, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Couldn’t see the point of the silly price section either. Glad its gone.--Aspro (talk) 23:51, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
For an article that gets so many page-views, it's remarkable how weak it's stayed so long. For my money, a country article should clearly explain (if possible): a) how cannabis came to that country (if known) and b) when it was first banned and why. For reference, Cannabis in Australia has an outstanding amount of background on how cannabis came to Australia, the culture around it, the crack-downs, etc. It's a pretty dense article, but it does give an expansive view. The British article could I think use more coverage about demography and trends of cannabis users. I spruced up Cannabis in New Zealand with a little historical background, including the string of gradually-stricted laws, and the sudden popularity of cannabis in the 1960s due to the international cultural trends. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 23:59, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
This is more a question of semantics. Where the article Cannabis in the United Kingdom says: “Cannabis has been restricted as drug in the United Kingdom since 1928” would it not be clearer to say: Cannabis has been a regulated drug in the United Kingdom since 1928”. Even controlled drug is a mere euphemism, as heroin etc., is freely available on many a street corner with out any control of who can purchase it. Also, here is a link to a book that I found that maybe useful as a ref to included in the article regarding the 1928 Dangerous Drug Act. [3] Yet, I would like a comment or two first. --Aspro (talk) 16:54, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
@Aspro:, Miller seems a great source, by the way, I've enjoyed reading his extensive two-part work on the history of cannabis in the UK. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 04:11, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Kind of like how I've partially reconciled heavily-overlapping US cannabis articles (though still lots of overlap), I have concerns that Legal and medical status of cannabis is kinda of a clumsy catch-all that's routinely falling behind the times, and also not as useful for comparison as the chart at Legality of cannabis by country. I propose:

  • We go into each country of Legal and medical status of cannabis, and unless it's just unusable material, chop it out and make a standalone article for cannabis in that country, that way the article will be easier to tie into the category-tree and community of interest for that specific country for better updating.
  • Place a "main article" tag in the big by-country chart so that each country article is linked into its row, which makes it way easier to fact-check that chart to make sure it's current.

Objections, thoughts? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 02:49, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

FWIW:
I think by splitting apart the latter and redirecting it to the former, we can better focus our efforts as editors and make sure the most current and well-ordered info is reaching the most readers. There are a few others overlapping redundancies within WikiProject Cannabis (just to my eyes this WP has an unusual number of completely separate articles pretty much covering the same topic that could be made more efficient) but this is a quick and easy one, and splitting up LMSC would also provide us with a number of decent (cited) stubs for "Cannabis in CountryX" articles to flesh out our overall "Cannabis by country" tree. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 03:01, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

I agree on that. I think that we should redirect the latter article with the former, because the latter article seems to provide the same, in fact less information, than the former article. Superchunk22 (talk) 06:43, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

I 2nd that.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  13:15, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Even though right now it's just a re-hash (rimshot) of existing material, I think it's pretty interesting to arrange it in this format so that a reader can really see how cannabis first started to encounter restrictions, then international agreements to limit it, and then recently this wave of relaxing those laws began. I've mined just a few existing articles for key dates, but welcome others to expand it. I don't want it to be too US-centric by cluttering it up with too many individual US states, so I'd recommend only listing individual US states when it's a real historical key-point, like the first state to take a given action. But definitely could use expansion for more countries, especially for the more recent wave of decrim and legalization. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 05:22, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Don't know if this is relevant but it has been suggested that the political move against cannabis was germinated by William Randolph Hearst the newspaper magnate. He had invested heavily in forestry plantations that planted trees that would produce quick growing pulp trees for paper. On finding that someone had found a way to utilize cannabis to provide paper fibre and yield more per acer, per year, than trees, he used his influence to get the government to ban the growing of cannabis completely and without exception. There was never any social problem associated with cannabis at this time, either in the US nor in any other country. It appears to have been all just hype, promoted by someone that had great media control and used it to protect his financial interests. After all, hemp for fibre is planted closely together so that they grow tall and don't bush out. The commercial verities (for fibre production) don’t bush out and become high in THC. The hemp farmers wanted fibre for ropes etc. The illegalisation however has helped the criminal fraternity, and provided bounteous ways of earning easy money. So don't think that one need to worry about being US centric when it was the US wot did it and created the current unholy mess!--Aspro (talk) 21:31, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
While the US did play a larger role in cannabis law in later years, note that it wasn't until the 1930s that the US took even a national-level interest in cannabis legislation. The 1925 Opium conference influenced a lot of opinions, and iirc it was the South Africans, Turks, and Egyptians who pushed for cannabis to be covered under the Opium Convention in 1925, with the US not really caring that much. The US took a lot more interest by the 1930s, but as far as I know it wasn't until post-WWII, and particularly the 1970s, that the US got big on influencing cannabis policy in other countries (Afghanistan and Nepal being good examples of banning cannabis in the '70s under US pressure). That's one of the utilities of having this timeline, being able to see which countries did what when. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 19:41, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Anyone else want to help push that number over 100? You can see the full list of countries, and which have articles and which don't, at Legality of cannabis by country. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 23:42, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Article Bhang needs a revamp from any edibles fans

The article bhang (Indian edible preparations of cannabis, usually in a milkshake) is kind of a mess and needs a rewrite, and the Talk page has a bunch of good sources that have gone unused.

If you're interested in edibles, even if you don't know much about India or bhang, this could be a fun project because an outsider view could probably help make the article clearer for the general public. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 04:28, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Greetings WikiProject Cannabis/Archive 1 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 17:56, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't know how useful this structure for be, but for kicks I took 30 minutes and built and populated a "by year" category for cannabis. Maybe add this to any other articles you happen to run across that lack it. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 05:14, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

What to call category for cannabis commissions/reports?

Anyone got a good/standardized idea for what to call a category that could hold these three articles (for a start)?

Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 21:00, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

"Cannabis research", which already exists, seems appropriate. No need for a subcategory like "Cannabis studies" until there are many more similar articles. ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:01, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Update medical cannabis legality map

As pointed out by an IP at Talk:Medical cannabis, Australia has apparently legalized it and so the map on that page needs to be updated. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/australasia/medical-marijuana-to-be-legalised-in-australia-from-november-2016-a7222576.html Sizeofint (talk) 07:19, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Category:Cannabis culture is getting overgrown; sort into subcats?

I notice that Category:Cannabis culture has 52 articles now; can anyone interested drop in and see what of those can be sorted into subcats so it's tidier before the Editathon starts? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 02:40, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

I wonder if the category "Films about smoking" would be more appropriate as "Films about cannabis". "Smoking" can refer to tobacco and other substances. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:45, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
That's another issue I was puzzled by; we already have Category:Films about cannabis so not sure why the Smoking cat is included under cannabis... I can't quite tell by looking at it, but we might need subcats for TV shows/web serials, and other forms of media that we can't cleanly subdivide into yet. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 02:47, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
Done Subdivided cats and got it down to 26 articles, that should be good enough. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 04:09, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

In the interests of keeping WPCannabis and Category:Cannabis NPOV, as well as just make info easier to find for all readers, I feel we're missing categories to cover a few aspects:

  • We don't have anywhere in the tree to really file anti-cannabis activists like Harry Anslinger, Kevin Sabet, and Andy Harris (politician). They're certainly very applicable to the cannabis topic, but there's no clear place to file them.
  • Similarly, there's no clear place to file people who were key figures in the illegal cannabis trade, nor for the handful of articles we have about anti-cannabis raids/operations/initiatives, etc.

Broadly, I think we need something akin to Category:Temperance movement under Category:Alcohol. Not sure whether to call it "Opposition to cannabis" or what (we could also file anti-cannabis films/books under this). Also though clearly BLP issues are key, for people who have documentably committed crimes (per their jurisdiction) in cultivating or marketing cannabis, we need something like "Cannabis smugglers" (not that though) or "Cannabis criminals" (not that either) but something that connotes "person who is significant in cannabis for having been legally prosecuted for for-profit cannabis activities". I'm open to any suggestions on any of these. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 05:15, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

As an initial move, I created Category:Cannabis trafficking to hold all articles (people, books, groups) regarding the illegal cannabis trade, with "trafficking" appearing to be about as neutral a term as we could want. I'll fill that one up first and then see if it needs to be subdivided. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 20:11, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
Also created fr:Catégorie:Trafic de cannabis, es:Categoría:Tráfico de cannabis, ru:Категория:Незаконный оборот каннабиса, de:Kategorie:Cannabis Menschenhandel, no:Kategori:Cannabis menneskehandel, it:Categoria:Traffico di cannabis and nl:Categorie:Cannabishandel. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 20:31, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
For lack of a better term, I created Category:Cannabis prohibition just to see if that works; we can WP:CFD it if we need to modify the term, but I thought I might as well get it rolling. Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 04:58, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Weed the People

I've worked on Weed the People a bit, and Bri has requested a copy edit. I'm still hoping to add a few more sources and tinker with wording a bit, but I invite project members to take a look. I'd like to submit this for Good article status ASAP, ideally for promotion this month (but knowing the GA queue often means no pickup for months). ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:05, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

@Bri: I noticed "circumvented" was changed to "complied" in the lead. Do you think a second change later in the article would be helpful as well? ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:22, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

What qualifies as an improved article

I edited Kyle Turley and The Bellamy Brothers this month. These articles are not mainly about cannabis but the edits that I made to them were regarding the topic of cannabis. Should they be added to the list of improved articles?--Jamesy0627144 (talk) 16:22, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

I've got a couple more new article up my sleeve. If we can expand Arlington Experimental Farm by ~300 characters, it would be eligible for WP:DYK. I think "Did you know that the U.S. government used to grow Cannabis on the site of The Pentagon?" would look good on the main page. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:26, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
