Using barycentric elements for all TNOs and high-aphelion minor planets/comets

I would like to propose standardizing JPL-Horizons's barycentric orbital elements for TNOs and long-period comets instead of using JPL-SBDB's heliocentric elements on Wikipedia. For those not familiar, barycentric orbital elements use the Solar System Barycenter as the reference point, and are much more stable in that they don't fluctuate as much as heliocentric elements (i.e. heliocentric semimajor axis can change by as much 1 AU in 200-day intervals!).
For TNOs whose perihelia lie within or outside Neptune's orbit (q>29.8 AU), this would eliminate the need to update orbital elements every time JPL-SBDB updates their reference epoch semiannually. Only the mean anomaly changes by epoch, but this can be simply resolved by standardizing a same epoch for all TNOs (the epoch can be arbitrary, but maybe we can keep it simple with a nice, rounded epoch date like JD 2460000.5?). Even if TNOs are being perturbed by Neptune, the timescale for noticeable change in their barycentric orbits is very long anyway, so there won't be a need for frequent updates.
For high-aphelion minor planets and comets whose perihelia lie interior or close to the orbits of significant perturbers like Jupiter or Saturn, we can arbitrarily define the epoch at the date when the object is far enough from the Sun that gravitational and non-gravitational perturbations are minimal. Whether to use the inbound or outbound barycentric orbital elements, you decide; personally I prefer using inbound elements for currently inbound objects that haven't passed perihelion and vice versa.
As far as I'm aware of, the only issues with using JPL-Horizons's barycentric elements are the lack of uncertainties listed for each element. This wouldn't be a problem for objects with well-determined orbits and multi-opposition arcs, but for objects that don't have these, I'm not sure how to handle those.
Also one more thing to mention, we can modify Template:Infobox planet and Template:Infobox comet to include options for barycentric elements.
My rules and constraints above are only my ideas however, so I'd like to hear what you all have to say about this. Nrco0e (talk · contribs) 18:29, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

- Sounds like a good idea. For recently discovered long-period comets I often list the inbound and outbound barycentric values (using say 1950 and 2100) as the aphelion point (and orbital period) can change notably while in the planetary region. Kheider (talk) 18:45, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

I support the general idea, but I do have a few concerns.
- The lack of uncertainty information is a major downside. I think it is absolutely necessary that we keep giving uncertainty information, where it is considered relevant. It should be possible to create a third-party tool that takes the uncertainty and covariance matrix for Cartesian coordinates (as given by HORIZONS), and turn them into uncertainty in barycentric elements. But I am not aware of any existing tool that does this. In any case, this gets deep into WP:OR territory. As an alternative solution, we could keep uncertainty from the heliocentric elements. They are nearly identical for objects at those distances, as long as the orbits aren't too eccentric. I have no solution to offer for comets, or anything in an eccentric orbit.
- The HORIZONS data is more difficult to use than the JPL SBDB output, and not as straight-forward to link to in the references. I suggest to standardize this as much as possible. For example, we could make it mandatory to use a link of the form https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/api/horizons.api?format=text&COMMAND='99942'&OBJ_DATA='NO'&MAKE_EPHEM='YES'&EPHEM_TYPE='ELEMENTS'&OUT_UNITS='AU-D'&CENTER='@ssb'&START_TIME='JD2460000.5'&STOP_TIME='JD2460001.5'&STEP_SIZE='1', where the editor only changes as little as possible (in this case the designation of the asteroid, the input after "COMMAND="); is clearly instructed what part of the output to use (the five lines after "$$SOE"); and is pointed to the "Symbol meaning" near the end of the output page. This should ensure that references remain easy to create and verify.
- EDIT: If we choose an arbitrary epoch then why not use JD2460000? Whether the epoch is set at midnight or noon makes little difference to me. And this "arbitrary" choice will remain the closest full ten-thousand to the current date until November 2036. At that point we can switch to JD2470000, if Wikipedia still exists (or we don't; it doesn't matter much). Renerpho (talk) 00:03, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- A note of caution: The link above won't work reliably for asteroids with 3-digit numbers. For example, it doesn't differentiate between asteroid number 601 (the asteroid Nerthus) and the Saturnian moon Mimas (Horizon internal designation 601). As it stands, replacing the number 99942 with 601 in the link above will give elements for Mimas, not Nerthus. This won't be an issue for what Nrco0e has proposed (TNOs all have high numbers), but I think it's prudent to note that this link follows the "German design philosophy": It should work indefinitely, as long as you use it exactly how it says in the manual.
- Nrco0e suggests to use Neptune's perihelion (29.8 AU) as the cutoff point. I would suggest to use 30 AU instead. It is simpler, and it is often used as a cut-off point in both the literature ("30+AU"+TNO+perihelion) and on Wikipedia.[2]
- Modifying the templates sounds like a good idea. Of course we have to add the option to give barycentric elements, if the current proposal is implemented. But please let's also keep the option to provide heliocentric elements. Who knows when they might be needed!

- @Renerpho: Thank you for your comments and concerns, it's very much appreciated.
- I'm no statistician, but mixing the heliocentric uncertainties with the barycentric values honestly feels wrong, or at least off, to me. I'd like to see a more rigorous justification for this, even if it's WP:OR. I know of Find_Orb that can calculate barycentric orbit uncertainties, but the online version of it doesn't have such option unfortunately. Other than that, I don't know of any other website that has this capability too. If we're avoiding WP:OR, maybe we can contact the developers of JPL-Horizons or Find_Orb to make barycentric uncertainties available online? It's quite a stretch, but it might be possible.
- Your Horizons permalink looks good, but I think you should define the unit for step size (years will do) so that it only shows one epoch of orbital elements, like this: https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/api/horizons.api?format=text&COMMAND='Apophis'&OBJ_DATA='NO'&MAKE_EPHEM='YES'&EPHEM_TYPE='ELEMENTS'&OUT_UNITS='AU-D'&CENTER='@ssb'&START_TIME='JD2460000.5'&STOP_TIME='JD2460001.5'&STEP_SIZE='1_YEARS'. This should remove any confusion about the multiple orbital elements for the layman. Also, the object designation in 'COMMAND' doesn't necessarily have to be a numerical designation or ID; you can input the name and that still works.
- Sure, I agree with your 30 AU cutoff point. If it's simple and widely used, I'm on board with it.
- My idea for implementing for barycentric elements into the infobox templates should be quite simple! My plan is to add a single boolean parameter (|barycentric = yes) that renames the "Orbital characteristics" bold heading into "Barycentric orbital characteristics", without the need to add a whole other section copying all the existing heliocentric parameters. Although this would make the existing parameters "Perihelion" and "Aphelion" somewhat inappropriate, renaming them "peribarion" or "apobarion" probably wouldn't be helpful either, especially for the layman. I'm thinking of adding a similar boolean parameter for specifying inbound or outbound orbits for comets and eccentric minor planets, which should also save us time from putting needless parenthetical notes next to the orbital elements like in C/2014 UN271. - Mixing heliocentric and barycentric elements clearly wouldn't be a perfect solution, I agree. I was thinking about Find_Orb, but as you said, the online version doesn't have the option to choose barycentric coordinates. I believe Find_Orb would count as a reliable source, but there are still problems. For one, it's not great to mix orbital elements from one source (JPL) and uncertainties from another (Find_Orb). They handle the data differently (or may even use different data altogether). In some cases, the results will not be good.
- I could talk to Bill Grey (developer of Find_Orb) and ask if he'd be able to add a new option to the online version, but I'm honestly not sure if it's worth the effort. The results will be difficult to use on Wikipedia, due to verifiability issues. Using the astrometry published by the MPC will not give the same results as using that given by AstDyS, which in turn isn't what JPL will say. Particularly for uncertainty information, the results strongly depend on the weighting scheme, which differs (and which, unfortunately, is not made public in case of the JPL information). I think having the uncertainty information in the HORIZONS output would be the only truly satisfying solution. So, yes, contacting JPL sounds like a good idea.

- If I understand this correctly, a planet can have a second set of data, describinbg the orbit baricentric not heliocentric. This yields different values for similar parameters like "Inclination". All fine.
- Now to simply set new parameter to
|barimetric=yes
, and manually change the values from helio-based ones is tricky business. It woudl require manual checks, if I understand well. - An other solution could be to add new bari-parameters to the infobox, like
|bari_inclination=
. When present, the infobox shows different section "Barimetric orbit characteristics" as expected, leaving the existing helio-values untouched (ands showing these, unchanged, in their current section). That way the editors like you all keep a clear view of changed (added) values. - About your concerns: I don't think giving two sets of elements side by side is a good idea. It gets cluttered very quickly, and at least one of the two sets will contain a lot of irrelevant information. Besides, there are a number of articles already where heliocentric elements have been discarded quite a while ago. This new change to the template was done to formalize that, not to make it more difficult to read. It is already hard enough to decide what's the essential information that's needed in the infobox.

. I don't see how it is "more manual" than the old method. If someone -- not me! -- wanted to get fancy and use a bot to automate the process, the link is designed to be machine-readable. Just replace format=text in the url with format=json. - Ah, one more thing: The parameters "aphelion" and "perihelion" are currently mislabeled. The problem is that the word "-helion" implies that the elements are heliocentric, which is not true. Is it possible to rename these to "apobaryon" and "peribaryon" iff

? Alternatively, I had previously suggested to use "apoapsis" and "periapsis", regardless of the status of|barycenter=

- If you can switch the value set between heliocentric ←→ barycentric: (A) use the switch:

, and (B) use distinct parameters (create new ones as needed), like|inclination=x
←→|bari_inclination=z
. That way, an article editor is required to be clear about which value was entered :-) Do not, I said not, expect editors to (C) change edit existing|inclination=x into z
, because nobody can see what the current value is supposed to mean: was it changed or not after someone set|barycenter=yes
??? The infobox data will become untrustable, even for experienced readers like you. - So if you agree, please propose the set of new
|bari_...=
-parameters required. - With this, the infobox can easily be made to show either the heliocentric or the barycentric set of values (and hide the other set).

I have noticed that several/most contributions of HistorySc20 (talk · contribs) revolve around the work of Alessandro De Angelis... I am concerned there is a conflict of interest here, so I'm bringing up the issue for review both and at WikiProject Physics to ensure that Wikipedia remain neutral. - This seems to be a common problem with articles on academics - I recently came across Lorenzo Iorio which was written by a CoI editor. Fortunately HistorySc20 (talk · contribs) hasn't edited many times, most of the content being on Alessandro De Angelis (astrophysicist) itself. Some of it does seem self-promotional though. Extra space after template RA

- The RA template automatically includes a space before the 'seconds' field and doesn't check whether that field is populated. Probably a tag should instead be incorporated into the 'if' check for 'seconds'. I put in a request to get that changed. Praemonitus (talk) 13:02, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Donald Machholz
Was wondering if some members from this WikiProject could take a look at Donald Machholz? He recently died and his wife has been editing the article. I left a note about making edit requests instead on her user talk page, but see never responded. She seems to mean well but the last edit she made might need some re-assessing. She provided a source for the content, but it's an obituary-type piece written by a friend of her and her husband; so, it's hard to ascertain it's reliability. The source also begins by directly mentioning content the wife by name and how she notified the author of her husband's death. It's one of those claims that seems really hard to verify, even when sourced, because there's no way to tell whether it's actually true. An IP user added a huge graphic, essentially a poster-style schema for the Local Group, to several articles related to that topic:
- Local Group
- Andromeda Galaxy
- List of Andromeda's satellite galaxies
- Satellite galaxies of the Milky Way
The IP who added this image is likely the same as the user who uploaded it to Commons (Pabloillustrations (talk · contribs)), as they added other images by the same user, including terribly unencyclopedic representations of Big Rip and Jamais vu. At Commons, I have nominated several of their uploads for deletion for this reason. My hunch for this specific image would be to remove all copies except at the main article, as it is too large and broad in scope. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 10:42, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
- This feels rather a lot like self-promotion, given the links to "support the artist" and their various social media accounts. - @Parejkoj and LaundryPizza03: I would like to add that his artworks are a lot more problematic besides self-promotion and overabundance in Wikipedia pages. I sincerely apologize if my explanation's tone comes off as accusatory.
- Recently Pablo Carlos Budassi has been adding all of his own original artworks and infographics to astronomy pages like Huge-LQG, GN-z11, Mini-Neptune, and PSR B1257+12. While I normally wouldn't mind these since I'm sure that he is contributing in good faith, my biggest issue with his artworks is the blatant lack of scientific accuracy and merit, as well as potential copyvios. Take these files for example: File:Fomalhaut.png, File:Powehi.png, File:Phobos moon black background.png, File:Ceres black background.png, File:Pluto black background.png, and File:Ganymede.png—all of these are (non-scientifically) retouched and highly saturated space photographs that he publishes as entirely his own. For other astronomical objects that do not have high-resolution images, he represents them with unrealistically saturated colors like in File:Gonggong.png, File:Haumea black background.png, and File:Sedna.png (it's impossible for Solar System objects' tholins to appear this red to the human eye). Too add more, his representation of 2010 TK7 in File:2010tk7 black background.png is misleading as he uses a photograph of 243 Ida without explanation. The photographs of Ida, Earth, and Moon (note how their phases don't match) are not credited—the description simply saying that this image is photoshopped is not a good rationale for keeping this on Commons.
- More problems arise in his artworks when you consider copyright–he tends to pass off others' artworks as his own (example: File:Ginan star.png comes from ESO/M. Kornmesser and File:Asteroid belt landscape.png comes from NASA/JPL-Caltech) or cut-and-paste others' artworks into his own (example: File:Delta pavonis.png where he has rotated and shifted the hue of the planets from NASA/Ames/JPL-Caltech). Even if the source images may be published in the public domain, it still wouldn't be right to pass them off as your own. Some of his artworks have been rendered in SpaceEngine, which has a license that requires crediting the program. Notability for Martian craters
I feel like I bring this up every once in a while, but I can't find it in the archives of here, WT:ASTRO, or WT:SOLAR, and NASTRO is a bit quiet on the subject of features on astronomical objects. Basically, my concern is that we have dozens (if not hundreds) of single-sentence stubs that are little more than the prose version of the related table, plus a gallery of images. Take for example Peridier (crater), Inuvik (crater), or any of the other half-dozen I pseudo-randomly chose from the List of craters on Mars (I did avoid the ones I knew were notable). Do we really need these articles, or should they be redirected back to the parent article, much like the hundreds of others I created a few years back? Primefac (talk) 10:17, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the invitation to discuss, Primefac. I agree that redirect to list for any stub created is better than deletion. I've been meaning to discuss this generally and have mentioned it before. I think the criteria for notability of craters should be changed. The criteria could be slightly different for different bodies such as Mercury, Mars, the moon, etc. But fundamentally I think any complex crater should be considered notable. Complex craters have central peaks or peak rings. By that criterion the crater Peridier (crater) would be retained as an article, but Chatturat (crater) would be redirected, for example. The larger craters are more likely to be written about in the scientific literature so this criteria may be "automatically" true in a sense, but I think it should be explicit. I think using simple diameter of a crater is not the right way to go as 1) Onset of complexity occurs over a range of diameters, and 2) onset of complexity is different on different planets, primarily but not entirely based on gravity. Another tricky element to this is the fact that some complex craters can appear to be "simple" (without a peak) because the peak has been buried by sediment (like Palos, probably) or lava (like Plato on the moon). I have other points to make about IAU's criteria for naming that could come into it but that would clutter up this particular comment so I will make it later. - To have a standalone article we should have substantial writings on the topic. Perhaps 2 paragraphs are enough. To meet GNG then this should be more than one source, not by the same author. At least it is easy to be independent of topic. But for craters on Earth, there are speculative ones, and so must be supported by a secondary source if there id doubt they exist. - Consensus seems to be that maps showing craters do not count. Neither do tables or figures, and even when craters are mentioned in passing in an article, that does not count. I disagree with all of it, but that is consensus. To me the problem is a crater has to be pretty weird in some way for it to be the subject of its own article or book. I agree there are speculative ones on Earth because they can be eroded or buried, as they can be on Mars to a lesser extent, and your comment is not irrelevant, but Martian craters are not yet subject to the kind of verification process that can occur on Earth (drilling, geophysics, etc.), so maybe it is not as comparable of a point. - Features on astronomical bodies other than Earth fall outside the scopes of WP:NASTRO and WP:GEOLAND, therefore WP:GNG applies. To justify an article, there must be multiple reliable sources that provide significant commentary on the feature (not just a single sentence, table entry, or label on a map), that are independent of the researchers who discovered or named the feature. Furthermore, it must be evident from the article itself whether the feature satisfies those requirements e.g. by citing those sources. I support redirecting most of these stub crater articles as many of them fail WP:NASTRO in their current form. However, if referenced content can be added and notability is shown, many of these articles could be kept. Even so, I think a lot of them are going to be redirected. Quasar tsunami (red link)
Kinda fits with the above, so ++ topical. Anyway, I've seen several scientists refer to this phenomenon, which clearly is beyond just jetseses. Maybe I missed mention of this on the project, but in any case, should this be a standalone page, or failing that, a section somewhere? Just a mention? And so on. Top google result is a barebone NASA Image of the Day entry from Dec 2020, which reads (in part) as follows:

They emanate from quasars and tear across interstellar space like tsunamis, wreaking havoc on the galaxies in which the quasars live. The rest of the entry discusses the illustration, which would be cool if we could use. - I actually don't invoke simple NASA press releases alone to be the basis for an article's existence. It is just on par with other news outlets, who made some ridiculous claims before.

- "Quasar tsunami" is a neologism that has not been widely adopted by astronomers. It does not meet WP:NASTRO. NASA engages in self-promotional press releases just like any other organisation - those are not independent sources, so cannot be used to establish notability. Even that PR image caption (not a full press release) only says 'like tsunamis', never using the phrase 'quasar tsunami'. I don't think there's enough usage to even justify one sentence in an article.
"AGN outburst" on the other hand is a widely used term, adopted in the peer-reviewed literature for over a decade. I'm surprised we don't have a section of active galactic nucleus explaining outbursts. Maybe raise that on the article talk page? User:SpaceImplorerExplorerImplorer has repeatedly stated to remove Stephenson 2-18 from the list. However, several users, including myself, have responded and supported St2-18's status on the list. We tried to convince him that "uncertainties" weren't enough to remove it from the list, as its massive radius (~2,150 Rsol) was verifiable, supported by the Laws of the universe and hard math, and in a reliable source, but he kept on going about the radius being too large and above the limit for star sizes. As the discussion is becoming very tiring (and annoying), I have extended the discussion here so more people can be involved. This will hopefully result in a faster consensus. RfC: inconsistency with the planetary system around Sol
- The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
Arguments were raised about whether there is one Solar System or multiple solar systems in the Milky Way. Sometimes "solar" and "planetary" are used interchangeably. ESA uses "solar systems" in the sense of multiple planetary systems, though NASA states there is only one (official) Solar System in the Milky Way, and all other systems are called "planetary" not "solar". I found no guidance from the IAU on that topic, so here we are. There doesn't appear to be a strong case to shun all usage of the expression "solar system" in relation to other planetary systems, but it could be better for us as we reduce ambiguity in that way.
MOS:OUR (and WP:PRONOUN, based on the MOS guideline) are the closest to answering this question. Both state that it is generally inappropriate to narrate the article from the first person. There was an attempt to use the "figurative use" exception, but it lacked details. Besides, figurative language is commonly used to convey difficult topics in an easy-to-digest manner, and there doesn't appear to be any argument that changing "our" to "the" will complicate the understanding of the lead. Also, local consensus should not normally override policies and guidelines.

- B "our Solar System" is actually grammatically incorrect, since there is only one Solar System. All other such systems are in fact planetary systems, even though they may be called solar systems as shorthand. Rather to the contrary, since Wikipedia is not a reliable source, that comment can be safely ignored, as far as what reliable sources have to say about this question. - C. This will generate a lot of drama for no gain. As you have noticed yourself, this has already been discussed to death. At the end of the day, context matters. In the Milky Way case, the emphasis is in singling out our Solar System from the multiple solar systems it contains, so a bit of redundancy is fine. - C It's a bit of sophistry to say there's only one solar system. Even in sources that know the difference, I commonly see "solar system" as a synonym of planetary system. I try to use "planetary system" myself, but I need to consciously correct myself, because what I read is so often the opposite. The same's going to be true of our readers. - I did however say in the edit summary that I wasn't done with the page yet (but I guess no one may have put any attention to this summary), so not yet willing to let it being nuked prematurely until it's entirely done, but was expecting a possibility that some may try to oppose the idea of creating this as a page, even when I was still working on the page as it was not completed yet. Also, that 2021 paper is not the sole study to talk about the "Stupendously large black holes" (in which I know it would typically make less sense to have a separate article if the subject was based on one sole source) since there's also few more papers and as well as few more studies that were brought in the topic, with some of their interesting info that were brought into press releases which are not always reliable though, but can still be mentioned in Wikipedia. With more interesting info based on the 2021 paper which also quoted some older papers, that's why I created this article (though I could have created a section for another page but didn't thought about that, and might be too large for that) and I was also trying to find an enough number of references to add into this page if it was worth to be a separate article.
- But if you don't really like having that subject being a seperate article, I would at best merge with another page that is more suitable for it, meaning rework that article as an shorter but still expanding section for the List of most massive black holes, but at the cost to likely rewrite the Introduction section in some style of the prelist sections of the List of largest galaxies page. Unfortunately, merging with supermassive black hole is a less better idea as it was noted there's different ways about how SLABs, including that they could have been formed within galactic nuclei. However, it was suggest that it would be reasonable to think there's likely an upper limit for the mass of black hole in general given the stability of their accretion disks and the current age of the universe, though few may able to break the rule via merging with other large black holes (during galaxy collision) and might happen as a result of the collapsing of some galaxy superclusters in the far future. It was therefore believed that SLAB were seeded by primordial black holes, and that the existence of SLABs of many hundreds of billion M☉ might mostly depends on the primordial black hole hypothesis being correct or not (sure likely either nobody or not enough people here has read the paper). That's also why merging with primordial black hole page may be a slightly better idea, even though at least the SLAB topic can still have a mention in the supermassive black hole or the other of these two said pages, though I still don't think it's an option safer than moving to List of most massive black holes.
- So, my best and safest option is either keeping the page or merging (redirecting, moving) it with the List of most massive black holes, if willing the rewrite the Introduction section or even create a subsection there instead, as I mentioned. Merging with the supermassive black hole or the primordial black hole is not a really good option, but can still be decent at best especially for the latter. However, casually choosing that page as redirect without merging with another page, or deleting it, by even going as far as entirely ignore the whole Stupendously large black hole subject and removing and act like if that topic never ever existed, is probably a good candidate to be the worst (unfair and dumbest) of these options about where this page will go here, and I do easily disagree with it whatsover with reasons not to do so. - I'll just add my 2 cents that "SLAB" does not warrant having its own article. It is a new term (TOOSOON) that has barely been used outside of the group of authors that proposed the term. In any case it is just a subcategory of SMBH, and deserves at most a sentence or so in the SMBH article. For that matter, "ultramassive black holes" also should not have its own article either: that's just another subcategory of SMBH, so I would prefer to see "ultramassive black hole" also just redirect to the SMBH article with a brief definition and description there. - Sorry for having been gone for a long moment, and not having left another reply. Anyways, I already did changed my mind about what I replied earlier (I did clearly says either "keep" or "merge or redirect to the List of most massive black holes", not only "keep"). So, I thought that we should merge and redirect to the "List of most massive black holes", because I've took inspiration from the "List of largest galaxies" page when it was used to have long pre-list discussions of the subject including the evolution of supergiant galaxies, but that was before when majority of these got removed because it was meant to keep records as it's a list, and readers would just only care about the records, and not an unnecessary long discussion of the subject. That decision was also due to that I thought it was better to redirect to this page or the "Primordial black hole" than the "Supermassive black hole" page (with the latter, as I thought, should mostly refer to the normal [non-primordial] SMBHs, which typically cannot exceed approx. 5×1010 M☉ [50 billion] which was represented as the upper limit for at least SMBHs with a surrounding accretion disk depending on the stability of the latter), given that SLABs have different ways of how they were formed, although most of them would be likely seeded by primordial black holes (for the largest ones) as stated in the 2021 paper. This is why I did once recommended to redirect and merge with "Primordial black hole" instead of the "Supermassive black hole" page. And well, for the "delete" part, nothing to say because I still disagree as the most harsh and worst (dumbest) decision. But now, I already did see why the best is to merge with "Supermassive black hole" page. Speaking of this, I've already been going to expand the "Supermassive black hole" page while I was gone, including adding topic about sub-categories for the SBMH, including the "Stupendously large black hole" (will be the same case for many other pages, but not using sandbox but something else).
- @Aldebarium: For that matter, I've honestly enjoying and agreed with the reply about the "Ultramassive black hole" page, I'm in favor of strongly thinking of leaning towards a merge and redirect to "Supermassive black hole" article for the this page as well, since just like the SLAB, UMBH is just another subcategory for the SMBH, while some paper are still refering to any BHs above (5–10)×109 M☉ (5–10 billion) just as SMBHs, including central black holes inside TON 618 and Phoenix Cluster. And the "UMBH" is even not notable enough to deserve a separate article either, and its article is already small enough to instead be a retirect and a sub-section for the "Supermassive black hole" page, like the "SLAB" article. I see that User:ZaperaWiki44 made some major changes to Supermassive Black Hole, including adding significant sections for "ultramassive" and "stupendously large". The latter definitely shouldn't have a whole section (I deleted what was added), as noted in the consensus above, and the former probably shouldn't either: I only count between 5-10 articles using that term on arXiv. I've deleted the "stupendously large" section, and am tempted to delete the ultramassive section as well. Numbers need to be checked on K-type main-sequence star because of edit war
A user on this page has been in a low grade-long edit war over the lifespan and mass of the sun and K-type stars. (Example) The source cited in states the correct estimated lifespan of the sun, 10 billion years, but the user has misinterpreted it as 20 billion. I have replaced the 2009 source with a NASA article written in 2019, but can the rest of the numbers (mass of stars, etc) be checked and page be hardened with some slightly firmer sources? 159.235.96.154 (talk) 02:46, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

COI/UPE cleanup needed
There is a series of three articles written by COI, UPE and SPA accounts[1] that need attention from someone who knows which sources are appropriate and acceptable for the astronomy and astrophysics fields. The articles are:
- Garik Israelian
- Starmus Festival
- Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication
- and the section Stephen Hawking#Medal for Science Communication
The articles are primarily sourced with press releases and primary sources. Starmus started as basically a few astrophysicists who got together to make a festival to award those in the arts who promote science. There's a lot of name dropping (and MOS:DUPLINKs) in these articles of the awardees of this relatively new awards festival. I see that the organizers had been very busy getting press releases splattered all over the internet, including Wikipedia, however I'm not finding a lot of independent reliable sources covering Starmus and its awards except as churnalism of press releases originating from Starmus and its organizers. Note that some of the organizers (board members) are themselves scientists who are familiar with promoting themselves via papers and other releases. Much of the Wikipedia articles were written and/or edited by the organizers themselves and their employees.[1]
I had written up my analysis of notability of Starmus on Talk:Starmus Festival#Article fails to show notability. I'm inclined to think that the Starmus and medal articles should be merged into the article of its creator/organizer after removing much of the WP:FLUFF.

Kluge et al. (2020)
In a search for research papers which have details regarding IC 1101 nd Abell 2029, I stumbled upon this : https://astronomy.stackexchange.com/questions/35464/does-ic-1101-have-any-name. It was about somebody asking about whether IC 1101 has a proper name or not, and called it the largest galaxy known. I looked at the responses, and one person who seemed to be an astronomer named Peter Erwin said that IC 1101 had no proper name, and said that in this paper (https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020ApJS..247...43K/abstract), about 12 or 15 galaxies are larger than IC 1101 by half-light radius. While I know that we now use different measurements for galaxy sizes, I think some details could be added. We can't just ignore things, after all. One particular thing I noticed is that 2MASX J15212054+3040154, the central galaxy of Abell 2061, has been listed on Table 4 with an extremely large half-light radius of 64,592 kiloparsecs, but with an extremely large uncertainty of nearly the same value. What is up with the galaxy, and could we discuss ore about galaxy size criteria? I'd love to hear your thoughts.--The Space Enthusiast (talk) 18:56, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- The galaxy that you mentioned, 2MASX J15212054+3040154, is already at the List of largest galaxies as Abell 2061 b. Using data from NED here and adjusting the distance scale to the redshift-based distance gives 229.25 kpc on the major axis and 178.81 kpc on the minor axis, based on a reading by 2MASS. This is just 747,000 by 583,000 light-years.
- Looking at the paper, it seems that they also tried to measure the intracluster light. It is an oddball result and is more likely an artifact. I would prefer the 2MASS measurement (which accounts for the fainter red stars) that is also in good agreement with the r25 measurement by the SDSS.

At List of exoplanets discovered by the Kepler space telescope, I have made the following changes:
- The title was changed slightly from "List of exoplanets discovered using the Kepler space telescope" for consistency with the category and because this is how discoveries by automated searches are usually described.
- Due to extreme length, I have split all the entries of by star number, in blocks of 500. The sublists are still rather large, but they should be easier to load and edit.
However:
- The list still needs to be updated to reflect new discoveries, which may entail creation of additional sublists with the same format as the existing ones.
- New navigational templates will be needed to navigate among the sub-lists.
- What was the source used for most of the exoplanets in the list?
- I'm still not sure about the color key, since some of the classes overlap, and one of the colors is used only once (the pea-green color assigned to Kepler-64b for circumbinary planets with additional stars).
