Next steps

[edit]

OK, so I decided on July for the drive because I'm coordinating a GAN drive in June. The next steps that need to happen before the beginning of July are:

  • Advertise the drive and send out a mass message to New Page Patrollers at the end of June. I will take care of the mass message.
  • Any setup/updating of TolBot necessary for running the drive, such as creating User:TolBot/Task 8/Drives/2022-07 New Page Patrol/leaderboard. Luckily, Tol said they were willing to help with this
  • The previous drive was Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/November 2021. It looks like you weren't involved, Zippybonzo, but it's not too complicated. The good news is that we have a bot that tracks scoring and a crowdsourced re-reviewing system, so the main task of the coordinators is just to setup the drive, answer questions about it, and award barnstars once it's over.

Buidhe, I'll be busy over the next few days or so, but can have TolBot mostly set up by the end of the week. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 23:19, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Buidhe, I have added a notice to the reviewer discussion header and left a message there. If you want, I can assist in writing the mass message. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 06:40, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! As for the mass message, I was planning on sending out the same message that was used last time:

New Page Patrol | July 2022 Backlog Drive
  • On 1 July, a one-month backlog drive for New Page Patrol will begin.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles patrolled.
  • Barnstars will also be granted for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • Redirect patrolling is not part of the drive.
  • Interested in taking part? Sign up here.
You're receiving this message because you are a new page patroller. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

(t · c) buidhe 11:47, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@BuidheI will see if I can add anything later, also I will be off the grid from the 13th July until the 27th I believe, I can obviously respond to messages but not run the drive fully. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 14:10, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, might not be worth sending the MMS to the AFC talk page, quite a few of the AfC reviewers aren’t NPR’s. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 14:13, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The mass message will be sent to all NPP rights holders, and not anyone else. But I will not send it until closer to the drive date. (t · c) buidhe 14:21, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it’s just the usual NPP newsletter list has the AfC talk page on it. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 15:33, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Buidhe, Looks like we have a few takers so far, I think that we could have a week long redirect patrolling blitz at some point (trying not to deduct from article patrolling though) also, if you get MMS that will be helpful. 😃 | Zippybonzo | Talk | 18:22, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A redirect patrolling blitz sounds like a great idea, but it may require writing a new bot or bot task, which is beyond my ability. (t · c) buidhe 18:24, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Tol could help with it, I could probably do something towards it but a full bot would be beyond my python ability. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 19:51, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'd recommend against a redirect patrolling blitz. That queue only stretches back one month (to April 26, 2022) and is under control. I'd recommend channeling our efforts into article patrolling, since that queue is basically on fire. –Novem Linguae (talk) 21:16, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Technically speaking, this could be accomplished with small changes to the code. However, I'd tend to agree with Novem Linguae — I don't think the redirect backlog is quite as large as that for articles, and I'm worried that more focus on redirect patrolling would take reviewers away from the article backlog. I don't know if you're proposing to hold the redirect blitz during the backlog drive or not, but I think the problem would be lessened if the redirect blitz was held at a different time from (say, after) the main backlog drive. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 15:54, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm only in this for awards, so what's all this?

[edit]

I'd suggest we swap out {{The Patroller's Barnstar}} currently on the list of awards for {{The New Page Patroller's Barnstar}} which WikiProject NPP actually awards. Also, could we find a specialized design for {{The New Page Patrol Medal of Merit}} which just re-uses the GA Medal? There's still time to make these fixes, even if the WikiProject needs to commission a new work via WP:RB. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:29, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chris troutman, I will go and swap the patrollers barnstar and I will get out paint.net and see what I can do with the medal of merit, thanks for pointing it out. Kind regards, | Zippybonzo | Talk | 06:25, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Zippybonzo: It's been a month. Can we expect a proper NPP Medal of Merit? I'm not clear why you thought it appropriate to "close" this discussion. Chris Troutman (talk) 15:06, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chris troutman It is not exactly appropriate to redo the medals halfway through the drive. I can very easily just change the green cross to a clipboard. Which I will do when I get access to a computer - I am currently abroad and therefore don’t have a computer to hand. Thanks, | Zippybonzo | Talk | 15:10, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I will also commission a new work at the reward board because the whole medal could do with a redesign. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 15:15, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not opine upon what is appropriate when you, a claimed co-coordinator of this drive, couldn't manage to choose the right awards before announcement or at least to utilize the two weeks of June following my original comment to do your job. I applaud volunteers who step forward to aid the community. Doing so, however, obligates you to perform the job correctly. If you will not be diligent I would prefer you did not arrogate authority to yourself in this manner. Certainly I will not be patrolling more fervently to earn an award I don't want. Chris Troutman (talk) 15:17, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chris troutman Then can I ask why nobody pointed it out on the last drive? The entire drive page was copied from the November one. I’ve commissioned it at the rewards board, I admit I should have done that sooner. But I can’t do much. I’m not a graphic designer. | Zippybonzo | Talk | 15:37, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't like the way the drive is being run, feel free to volunteer yourself the next time! (t · c) buidhe 16:05, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see nothing inappropriate about redoing the medals halfway through the drive. Hey man im josh (talk) 15:50, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Draftification reminder

[edit]

Reminder to reviewers to not overuse/abuse draftification, please. Per WP:DRAFTIFY, do not draftify junk, as this just kicks the can down the road and inundates AfC. As draftification should be used only when there is plausible notability, consider using PROD or AfD or CSD for junk. Curbon7 (talk) 21:24, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to second this. Seeing the high amount of draftification on the leaderboard just creates another problem and frankly, it's a lazy approach. If there's another drive in the future, a prevention of draftifying unless crucial should be noted. – Meena15:34, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Patrol/Page Curation and Leaderboard question

[edit]

Based on the guidelines, the awarded will based on the number of articles patrolled. As reviewing articles that are in the backlog few weeks ago does not count as patrolled (but count as page curation) so are we getting points only on reviewing recently created articles? How "recent" an article would be to be considered patrolled instead of just going into page curation?

Second question, has the leaderboard exclude reviews on redirects? Redirects are not counted in the award but I think I have done some today or yesterday. ✠ SunDawn ✠ (contact) 00:49, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

good question on redirects--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 11:29, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SunDawn. The leaderboard runs on specific code written by Tol that only counts patrols of articles not redirects. Any page curation carried out during the drive will be counted regardless of the article's date of creation. We recommend using only the page curation toolbar to patrol articles during the drive as the other method gives inconsistent results. (t · c) buidhe 00:57, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

On encouraging language

[edit]

@Buidhe, I have already left a message to someone on the re-review page, but do you think using fail/pass is a little discouraging to reviewers, please ping on reply, | Zippybonzo | Talk | 17:49, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's appropriate. Purpose of rereview is determining if the reviewer got it right. I personally might not use the icons but I'm not going to criticise anyone over that (t · c) buidhe 18:14, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to organisers!

[edit]

Fantastic to see an NPP backlog drive; hope it's a roaring success! I have done a fair bit of NPP stuff before, and of course I've read all the guidance, but I always feel a bit uncertain when taking actions, so if anyone wants to re-review the 3 patrols or 2 draftifications I've just done, that'd be much appreciated. — Bilorv (talk) 10:46, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bilorv I’ve skimmed them, they look good but because I have just skimmed them I will leave them for a proper re-review. Thanks, | Zippybonzo | Talk | 11:17, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question

[edit]

Are pages reviewed from Special:NewPages counted on the leaderboard? Thanks to all those who have joined the drive!! JTtheOG (talk) 19:10, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

JTtheOG All articles (not redirects) in the new page feed (I believe the one at Special:NewPagesFeed, which only counts article space) can potentially be eligible for the drive. We recommend using the Page Curation toolbar for all actions in order to ensure it's counted by Tolbot. (t · c) buidhe 20:09, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Too many points

[edit]

So in the interest of not inflating my score I had 4 articles I tagged for speedy deletion and someone removed the tag so I had to retag with an AfD tag. This gave me 8 points instead of the 4 points I really earned. I'm just going to write this down now because I will forget and then feel really bad about it months later when I remember. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 04:36, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry that the system isn't recording the correct number of points for you. Ideally there would be some check in the code to award points only once per article but I'm not sure if that's feasible for Tolbot to implement. (t · c) buidhe 06:06, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is 100% ok and honestly I would have missed it if it had happened slowly over the month. I've been working on a bot and the number of annoying edge cases that keep popping up is, well, annoying. I only noticed this problem because it happened so quickly and found myself in the top 10. I know I'm reviewing a lot of articles but not THAT many articles. I just wanted to be open and honest, fun competitions like this aren't enjoyable if someone cheats. What's really important is getting that backlog taken care of. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 10:43, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Tol thoughts? | Zippybonzo | Talk | 11:51, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. This would require some restructuring, but I'll see if I can implement it. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 16:37, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  1. -4 Points 04:36, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
  2. +3 Points (Twinkle) 07:26, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

If anybody cares, you can subtract one from my score. I did a test edit that shouldn't count. Posting here in case some re-reviewer tries to nail me for it :P –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:07, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bot counting user pages?

[edit]

@Buidhe and Tol: I just looked at some stats and log entries (not my own), and it appears that the bot is also counting patrols to user pages. I expect these should be excluded from the leaderboard, just as redirects are excluded? ComplexRational (talk) 17:12, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ComplexRational I can't speak to the bot but why would user pages need patrolling to begin with? (t · c) buidhe 18:49, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ComplexRational: Hm; I'll take a look at this. I've been fairly busy recently, but this should (hopefully) be a simple fix. @Buidhe, mainly for improper use of user pages (e.g. web-host material, etc.). Tol (talk | contribs) @ 18:54, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I encounter new user pages every now and then, not to mention new issues of The Signpost and I assume everything that needs patrolled counts, does it not? Chris Troutman (talk) 19:05, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Buidhe: User pages can be shown in Special:NewPagesFeed if desired, and on Special:NewPages, pages in any namespace are unpatrolled by default. I generally agree with WP:NPP's statement that NPPs do not need to patrol userspace and are encouraged to focus on mainspace, so I usually leave them alone unless I encounter an obviously problematic page that is eligible for CSD. ComplexRational (talk) 19:10, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done; bot now only counts mainspace patrols. See this diff for changes. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 03:25, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bot stopped updating

[edit]

The page history for the leaderboard hasn't updated since 18:03, 19 July 2022 (UTC). Sending a ping to our lovely bot master @Tol. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:19, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

yes I noticed it too, thanks...User:Tol?--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 17:20, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hey man im josh, @Ozzie10aaaa: I've figured this out. The bot apparently crashes when it encounters deleted log entries. Specifically, these move (move/move) logs: 1, 2. I will fix this so that it assumes any log-deleted moves to not be draftifications (and so will not give points for them). Tol (talk | contribs) @ 00:04, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re-reviews

[edit]

Do these also need to be done by the end of the month, or will there be a grace period after the drive ends? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:57, 26 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Buidhe I think a couple of days would work, I need to do all the work involving barnstars. Do you have any thoughts Zippybonzo | Talk (he|him) 05:19, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think for the last drive the cutoff was the same for re-reviews as the general end of the drive. To me that is the best way to do it (even if last minute reviews can't be re-reviewed) because then there is a clear and consistent deadline for the end of the drive and no ambiguity in scoring. (t · c) buidhe 05:51, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I am participating actively in this round's backlog drive, but I do think giving 1 week of grace should be fair for those who are interested to re-review reviews made in the last few days of the drive. – robertsky (talk) 13:14, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. As of now we're at 8,317 total patrols since the backlog drive has started, giving people plenty of articles to check. That's not including the articles that were reviewed before this month that could have still been re-reviewed. Those wishing to re-review articles, even before the July backlog leaderboard started ticking up, could have used the Top new article reviewers page. There's been ample opportunity, just limited interest. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:27, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. But we should not deny the opportunity to others to re-review reviews made at the last moment of the backlog drive. We did this in the last AfC backlog drive. Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Articles_for_creation/July_2021_Backlog_Drive#Finishing_the_drive. – robertsky (talk) 10:53, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well, if there's precedent for it then that changes things. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:05, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help

[edit]

I have been busy reviewing New Pages using the Page Curation Tool however I still seem to have a 0 on the tally board. What am I doing wrong? Dan arndt (talk) 06:53, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging @Tol as they wrote and operate the bot. Zippybonzo | Talk (he|him) 10:45, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at your patrol log and your page curation log. Draft and user page reviews, as well as redirect reviews, are not counted towards the overall total. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:09, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan arndt, it's exactly as @Hey man im josh said. You don't seem to have patrolled any eligible pages (articles in mainspace) during the drive. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 16:33, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks I knew that I was doing something wrong. Was using the AfC not the NPP. Dan arndt (talk) 23:04, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Robertsky/CSD_log#July_2022. Only the first 7 are applicable for NPP. I can't remember if the 8th was due to NPP or RM/TR or somewhere else, just ignore for the drive. 9th to 11th were related to a now banned editor moving their userpage through different spaces multiple times and can be ignored for the drive. – robertsky (talk) 06:59, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How should we report them? I've got 2 CSDs, 2 PRODs and 3 AFDs (1, 2, 3) done through Twinkle while going through the NPP queue. — Bilorv (talk) 09:41, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
