The DOF is proud to celebrate the decennial anniversary

We're offering a coupon for a free promo card for the trading card game we've been working so hard to develop over the past few years. We anticipate a release within the next few years. Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 04:01, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

It should be noted that this coupon is only to be printed out by those holding events for the anniversary, to be distributed at said events. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 04:14, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
Well, I won't be attending events this year...maybe at 15 years. Unfortunately, I don't have the facility needed to host an event for the handful that might live in my metro-- I've never once met anyone from Evansville who edits Wikipedia. So, since I'm not attending, I see no reason to keep people from obtaining it. The coupon will only be available until the 17th (to allow for the 15th to end in Hawaii), and then it will be deleted. Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 06:26, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
You make a very good point, and I can't believe that I didn't think of it. :) ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 06:46, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
You nearly denied yourself a promo card, didn't you? Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 07:18, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
Heh. :) ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 23:49, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Of course you know that "decennial anniversary" is a pleonasm. —Tamfang (talk) 01:15, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Questions about the Project and How to Get Involved

Hi all, I'd like to do what I can to help convince the community that we don't always have to take ourselves so seriously. I have a few questions that I hope someone here can help me answer:

  • What stuff is the project currently working on, and what do you do to get the attention of all editors, old and new, casual and committed, etc.?
  • Have you thought about doing a newsletter with links to some of the content you already have? Have you thought of using a regular publication as a vessel to motivate and deliver new content?
  • How is this project managed and efforts coordinated?
  • How is this project related to other initiatives on the lighter side of the movement? What groups are most active nowadays?
  • How can I get involved?

Thanks much for the help. I'm very much looking forward to a change of pace contribution-wise. -wʃʃʍ- 11:41, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

I am going to think about this and try to answer more thoughtfully, but first want to thank you for reaching out. One of the appeals of editing for me is the feel of community. It would be cool to collaborate more! ReginaldTQ (talk) 18:46, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

I would like to call the attention of the Dept. of Fun to User:Wiki-Pharaoh/WikiEmperor. It currently exists, is categorized as Wikipedia fauna and Wikipedia humor, while remaining a subpage of a permanently blocked user. I'm having difficulty finding policy on what's proper content for humorous pages (not a surprise), but the page in question doesn't really seem to contribute to Wikipedia, and I believe it ought to be removed (or at least be removed from those categories). A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:23, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Word association games deleted

Most of the word association games have been deleted without being tagged. Please see Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2010 October 25#Wikipedia:Sandbox/Word Association/Ultra Game and make any comments you wish there. Thryduulf (talk) 13:36, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Argh. Those games have been in existence for a long time and have been continually active. In the first place they should have been under DoF subpages, not /Sandbox... And another thing.. these pages fill a niche, they are a part of the Dept. of Fun, and the Dept. of Fun has a place on Wikipedia.. and I value the fact that Wikipedia has something for everybody.. and that people enjoy Wikipedia enough to have fun on it.. and create interesting link association activities that help them explore our wonderful site. These Word association games specifically are more for the readers anyway, not editors, so we shouldn't be complaining. They help readers find interesting articles to read, it's entertainment, part of the fun of Wikipedia.. Sure, let's be complete poopers and take that away from them. Editing Wikipedia is recreation.. It's meant to be fun.. Let's not get so presumptuous to think that has nothing to do with building an encyclopedia. Personally, I'm happy that we have such bright people as to want to play games on an encyclopedia rather than mindless shootemups! </end rant> -- œ 01:54, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Talk page stalker is a decidedly un-fun name for a thing supposedly under the Department of Fun. "Stalker" has no positive connotations and some horrific negative ones. Fun game

I have just launched a fun game that will last until next week. The premise is simple; you write whatever you want (subject to the posted terms), and I will make a YouTube video following whatever script the community has collectively written. If you want to play, please be sure to add your name to the CC-BY 3.0 declaration, though. –MJLTalk 17:11, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Troubling trend

I find the outcome of this TfD troubling. Humor is a tricky thing for Wikipedia to do responsibly. On the one hand, we need to be more aggressive about the potential of undisclosed satire to become misinformation. But on the other hand, we need to acknowledge that properly disclosed humor brings with it benefits for editor retention, and to resist the group of editors who appear determined to delete humor just because it's humor, even if it carries no actual potential for harm. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 21:01, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

I hereby challenge you for the leadership of the Wikipedia: Department of Fun.

I will adhere to whatever system of challenge you currently have in place, but if it is none, I challenge you to a fun-off.

I do not know the rules of the fun off but if pressed I shall indeed produce them.

I act because I must.

Sorry, but I would like to note that there is no such thing as "leader" of a WikiProject. I suggest that you take some time to read the WikiProject guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject. —MEisSCAMMER (scam) 01:13, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
I have read the guidelines at your request. Although I would have enjoyed a more fun answer, your "good information" is also appreciated.
Since there is no leader or even an "elected collaborator" I shall seek to build fun projects that enhance the amount of fun the average Wikipedian encounters. It is a large project but as the Future Leader of the Wikipedia: Department of Fun I'm sure I can manage. VictorVarnado (talk) 11:46, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
Although there is a danger that Wikipedians may encounter too much fun and then they don't help improve the encyclopedia. —MEisSCAMMER (scam) 19:59, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
Under my proposed reign, there will we suitable balance of fun. Suitability determined by each end user of the fun. VictorVarnado (talk) 15:26, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
What I mean is, you have only made one mainspace edit and already you are proposing to "take over" a WikiProject. It would be better if you were to at least go edit some articles, get a feel for how Wikipedia works, and then come back and pursue this if you wish to. —MEisSCAMMER (scam) 20:57, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
