From the editors
Happy 2014Hello, and welcome to the Month yyyy, issue X, of the Wikipedia WikiProject U2 Newsletter that YOU can edit! So, don't hesitate to help write them yourself! This issue's theme is The Joshua Tree, the fifth studio album by U2 released in 1987. We hope you enjoy it! Another year has gone by and, thanks to Miss Bono and her efforts and the hard work she put into the Project, WikiProject U2 has made numerous advances both as a WikiProject and as community. In April 2013, there was a roll call, in order to keep the project up-to-date on its number of active members. Project's pages and portal have been redesigned and reorganized. Finally, after many years, a new newsletter was published. During this year, ten new articles related to U2 were created; three articles, Morleigh Steinberg, U2 360° Tour, and Wide Awake in Europe passed through the good article nomination process successfully and were reassessed to GA-Class, "One Tree Hill" appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page as Today's featured article and WikiProject U2 has been featured in The Signpost for the second time in its history. (Read the full report here→) On the band side, the species of wafer trapdoor spiders Bono's Joshua Tree trapdoor spider (Aptostichus bonoi), which can be found in the Joshua Tree National Park in California, was named after Bono in honour of the band's 1987 album The Joshua Tree.[1] U2 have completed/are completing??? their thirteenth and long-awaited new studio album, the first since 2009's No Line on the Horizon, which is "a bit of a return to U2 of old" and should consist of twelve songs. The band was in studio until the end of November??? to get it finished before Christmas. U2 have worked with Chris Martin of Coldplay and American musician, songwriter and producer Danger Mouse on the new album.[2] U2 released??? two new songs, "Ordinary Love" and a new "Mandela" version of "Breathe" on 10-inch vinyl limited edition as part of Record Store Day's Back to Black Friday event on 23 November 2013. "Ordinary Love" was written and recorded by U2 for the biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The film, based on the 1994 book Long Walk to Freedom by anti-apartheid revolutionary and former South African President Nelson Mandela, was directed by Justin Chadwick from a script written by William Nicholson.[3] The band, who are long-time friends with Nelson Mandela, were inspired to write "Ordinary Love" after seeing early cuts of the film, and it also appears in the trailer for the film.[4] We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all, and your families, a Very a Happy New Year. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The Joshua TreeLead section[edit]
The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by rock band U2. It was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, and was released on 9 March 1987 by Island Records. In contrast to the ambient experimentation of their 1984 release The Unforgettable Fire, on The Joshua Tree U2 aimed for a harder-hitting sound within the limitation of conventional song structures. The album is influenced by American and Irish roots music, and depicts the band's love–hate relationship with the United States, with socially and politically conscious lyrics embellished with spiritual imagery. Inspired by American tour experiences, literature, and politics, U2 chose America as a theme for the record. Recording began in January 1986 in Ireland, and to foster a relaxed, creative atmosphere, the group recorded in two houses, in addition to two professional studios. Several events during the sessions helped shape the conscious tone of the album, including the band's participation in A Conspiracy of Hope tour, the death of roadie Greg Carroll, and lead vocalist Bono's travels to Central America. Recording was completed in November 1986; additional production continued into January 1987. Throughout the sessions, U2 sought a "cinematic" quality for the record, one that would evoke a sense of location, in particular, the open spaces of America. They represented this in the sleeve photography depicting them in American desert landscapes. The Joshua Tree received critical acclaim, topped the charts in over 20 countries, and sold in record-breaking numbers. According to Rolling Stone, the album increased the band's stature "from heroes to superstars". It produced the hit singles "With or Without You", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", and "Where the Streets Have No Name". The album won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. The group supported the record with the Joshua Tree Tour throughout 1987. Frequently featured on critics' lists of rock's greatest records, The Joshua Tree is one of the world's best-selling albums, with over 25 million copies sold. In 2007, U2 released a remastered edition of the record to commemorate its 20th anniversary. (Read the article→)
Article's history[edit]
The Joshua Tree article was created on 2 June 2003 by an anonimous IP user, identified by the user's numerical IP address 152.163.252.8 from Kansas, United States. The article made some progress, but was a stub, containing only few sentences of text, the track listing, and a little more. It was too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of this subject. From April to June 2005, Typhoon and other editors made a series of edits with the result that the article was expanded, especially its introduction. In that same year, another anonymous user connected from 128.164.230.247, which belongs to the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., added a new section, Themes in The Joshua Tree (now Lyrics), to the article and, with the help and the efforts of other contributors, the article became substantial, but it was still missing important content and required cleanup. Thanks to Fantailfan and others, the article made another step forward during the late summer and fall of 2006. The development of the article continued throughout 2007 as a result of the contribution of several editors reaching the B-Class by the end of the year. The article now has a defined structure, supporting materials, suitable references and reliable sources, and without major omissions and inaccuracies. From that moment on, thanks, among others, to Y2kcrazyjoker4, Dan56, Merbabu, Melicans, Cavie78, and Dream out loud, the article had a strong growth, both in quantity and quality, that led it to attain the good article status by passing an official review at the second attempt on 5 May 2010. The work on the article is continuing and more improvements in both form and substance, and it now seems to be ready for being nominated at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates.

Redirects for discussion
2013 saw an overall revamp of the WikiProject and the continuation of a number of major and minor projects. The arrival of Miss Bono, in November 2012, brought new blood and a new vitality to this project, and her efforts and the hard work she put into it allowed this project to make numerous advances both as a WikiProject and as community. In April 2013, we thought that it was necessary to start a roll call in order to keep the project up-to-date on its number of active members. Meanwhile, project's pages and portal have been redesigned and reorganized, but there are still many unused and/or unlinked project's page, some departments of the WikiProject are not running as efficiently as they could, and there is a lot of work to do. May 2013 saw the release of a new newsletter, The WikiProject U2 Newsletter, Issue VIII, the last published issue dates back to December 2007. It was followed by the Issue IX, in November 2013, and, one month later, by this edition. The whole Outreach department is still in a phase of reorganization. On the project side, we carried out several works for the improvement and renovation of the project, a restyling of the projet main page and of the associated portal, both technically and creatively. Other works involved the Assesment department, which is now running at full capacity, and the addition of the Cleanup listing toll that complements the already existing Article alerts. We are also waiting to make a request on the Toolserver for the Popular pages tool. During this year six editors joined our project (for the full list of active and fromer members of the project see Membership list). WikiProject U2 has also been featured in The Signpost for the second time in its history.
On the main namespace, ten new articles that belong to this project were created. (See the table below) Three articles, Morleigh Steinberg (review: 15 June 2013; reviewed version), U2 360° Tour (review: 23 June 2013; reviewed version), and Wide Awake in Europe (review: 27 July 2013; reviewed version) passed through the good article nomination process successfully and were reassessed to GA-Class. "One Tree Hill" appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page as Today's featured article on 9 August 2013.............. To be conTintinued…. Overall we can say that it was a good year for our WikiProject and with a good harvest, whilst waiting for the new album to arrive early next year. Wikipedia:WikiProject U2/Article alerts/Archive

[edit]- Schedule
- Start: Start all pages that are to be included in the next edition. Please note that "News and notes", "In the media", and WikiProject U2 and other reports are typically drafted in the latter, but suggestions for them are always welcome through our suggestions page.
- Draft: A rough outline of topics to be covered should be in place by the middle of ???, so that if a regular reporter is unavailable, the editor can find a replacement for that issue.
- Mature version[s]: Aim to have reasonably mature drafts of all pages for comments by the managing editors, fellow journalists, and other interested editors. WIkiProject U2 Newsletter editors recommend any structural changes, reductions in length, expansions in scope, necessary coordination between pages, postponement to subsequent issue.
- Finish: Last-minute tweaks and copy-editors go through the drafts; publication in the morning of the following day.
- Those wishing to submit an irregular article, such as (but certainly not limited to) interviews and op-eds, should [[Special:Emailuser/Example|email]] the editor-in-chief at least one week prior to your desired publishing date.

Interviews desk
[edit]This is The WikiProject U2 Newsletter's interviews desk, for formulating interview questions for various and sundry interview series.
WikiProject desk
[edit]This is the place to leave short announcements regarding upcoming events, collaborations, elections, task forces, new or revived articles, and other information for the "WikiProject report" subsection.
Publishing
[edit]Handle the actual "publishing" tasks in the following order.
- Update the issue header (at Wikipedia:WikiProject_U2/Outreach/newsletterdraft#Header). If there is a note from the editord, make that story #1. Rank the other stories in the order used in the newsroom or with big stories at the top. The order of these may be adjust to improve the balance of the two columns of stories on Wikipedia:WikiProject U2/newsletter. Make sure that each section's subtitle is reflected on the content page.
- Copy the header, all sections/stories, and the footer (one by one) to [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_U2/Outreach/newsletterFULL_MONTH_NAME_IN_LOWERCASETWO_DIGITS_YEAR<!--{{#time:y}}-->]] (example for December 2013: Wikipedia:WikiProject_U2/Outreach/newsletternovember13.
- Change the PREVIOUS/NEXT navigation in the earlier article to point to the new one and vicevesra of that feature.
- Replace all the occurences of Issue #: THEME and d Month yyyy (where "#" is expressed in Roman numerals; "THEME" could be the theme of the previous newsletter or just THEME; "d" = 1 to 31; "Month" is the month name; and "yyyy" = 4-digit year) with the proper values (use "Match case") (example for the issue number 44, with "Valentine's Day" as the issue theme, published on 14 February 2024: Replace "Issue #: THEME" with "Issue XLIV: Valentine's Day" and "d Month yyyy" with "14 February 2024".
- Update the newsletter home (it also serves as the issue summary/talk page delivery output; see below), the Newsletter section within the Outreach department, the archives, Current and Past editions at Wikipedia:WikiProject U2 (on the righ panel), and check that all is up to date.
- Post the newsletter issue summary on the talk pages of subscribers. The subscribe message is loaded into User:EdwardsBot/Spam for automatic delivery. See the recent history of the page for proper formatting. Only users which are on the access list can initiate a bot run (as an admin, you can add yourself). Note: Sometimes the bot will fail to start, with an error message about the Toolserver lag being too high. This can be overridden by entering "Really start" instead of "Start" in the Status page. The drawback is that a slightly outdated version of the subscription list will be used, but this should be tolerable in most cases.
- Initiate the draft page for the next issue, with a generic skeleton (using the pre-generated output below), so that editors can begin creating the next issue.
- Clear out discussion and links related to the newly published issue in the Newsroom.
