Citing an Army Court of Criminal Appeals decision
I am trying to fix one of the citations on suicide of Danny Chen. The citation for "on appeal, the Army Court of Criminal Appeals dismissed...discharging him with a Bad Conduct Discharge" is a bare URL. The link previously led to some sort of court decision. (It now leads to a history page, but thankfully, it has been saved on the Wayback Machine.) I want to fill out this citation, but as I have absolutely no experience with law or legal matters, I have no idea how to cite it. I do not even know which citation template to use. Using CSS to block CentralNotices
Is it possible to block Central Notices via CSS? If so, how? Rockfang (talk) 06:29, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Rockfang: "Suppress display of all CentralNotices" is an option at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. It uses MediaWiki:Gadget-HideCentralNotice.js and MediaWiki:Gadget-HideCentralNotice.css. Maybe you would only need the CSS if you don't mind the banner code being loaded without displaying it. Name Change of "Saturn S series" Article
Would attempting an article move of the "Saturn S series" article to a hypothetical "Saturn S-Series" article-- given further research fully corroborates the idea that Saturn has always internally referred to the S-Series as "S-Series" (see Talk:Saturn S series#"S-Series", not "S series" for more details, such as references to "Saturn S-Series" and "Saturn S-series" as well as potential inconsistency within Saturn)-- be appropriate or overly pedantic?
It bothers me to leave an inaccuracy there but I also recognize it probably doesn't hurt much as is.
What should be done? TheSaturnLover (talk) 06:33, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- I suggest moving the article and see what happens. It can always be moved back if necessary. Rockfang (talk) 06:38, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Nothing. The planet is warming, the tundra is thawing, species face extinction, and fascism is on the rise. Meanwhile yours is what I think we may call a "first world problem". -- Hoary (talk) 07:08, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

Help me with draft article
Hello, I have created an article on drug bust controversy in Visakhapatnam, it cna be found at the link Draft:Visakhapatnam Drug Bust Controversy, but, it was declined saying, could be notable but this is written like a news article, can someone help me out in re-arranging the article, so it can be published on Wikipedia. Truth Layer 123 (talk) 15:11, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, @Truth Layer 123. Help Desk volunteers give advice, but don't generally assist with writing or rewriting drafts.
- Looking at your draft, the sentence "Visakhapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh is one of the busiest ports in India and a major hub for global trade" caught my eye. In my view, that is an example of something that does not belong in the article.
- Generally, a Wikipedia article should be a summary of what independent reliable sources say about the subject of the article, and very little else. The sentence I've quoted above is cited to a source - but the source does not mention the subject of this article, so it is likely that neither this source, nor any information verified from it, belong in the article (the information should be in the linked article Visakhapatnam Port anyway).
- That is just one example - and the advice I've given is always am atter of editorial discretion, not an absolute. But I hope it will help you undersatnd what the reviewer meant. ColinFine (talk) 16:59, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Truth Layer 123 The declined-article message suggests asking for help at the Articles for creation help desk, which is a different page from this one. (I've not checked to see what kind of thing is typically answered there, though.) And you could of course ask the person who reviewed it what they think needs working on. Musiconeologist (talk) 18:01, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Truth Layer 123 Your draft looks promising but I think that the main issue is that it is speculating about an ongoing event, particularly in the "Aftermath" section, with statements like
The case continues to unfold...
. I think you should confine yourself to what is firmly established from reliable sources. Wikipedia articles can be updated if later findings become available. The title should be more neutral and encyclopaedic but that's a minor point. Mike Turnbull (talk) 22:23, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

Infobox image size
I can't get "|image_upright=" to work on infobox military conflict. This may well be me being a bit slow. Experimenting, I get it to work fine for me for infobox politician, but not for infobox weapon. Is there an issue? If not, could somewhat walk me through how to resize infobox images? Using px to resize infobox images - or any others - is, I am told, depreciated. Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:04, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Gog the Mild: Infoboxes have different parameters. {{Infobox military conflict}} does not have
image_upright
. The parameter is mentioned at Template:Infobox military conflict#Parameters 3 but that's the 3rd "Parameters" section and is actually about {{Infobox military operation}} which does have the parameter. The section is transcluded from Template:Infobox military operation/doc. That's confusing. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:33, 22 February 2025 (UTC)- Ah ha! Yes, it was. Thank you PrimeHunter. Gog the Mild (talk) 17:37, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

Request to create new categories
The articleTurkmen needlework needs to be categorized. The Persian version of this page has categories that need to be placed in larger categories. Creating a category is not a problem. But I am afraid that simply translating these categories into English will cause chaos in the WikiEnglish classification system. Please create the necessary categories to include pages related to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. Arbabi second (talk) 19:21, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Not me, User:اربابی دوم, because I am profoundly ignorant of needlework and would probably make stupid miscategorizations. You understand the subject matter and what you write suggests that you understand (en:Wikipedia-style) categorization as well, so why not tackle the task yourself? If you have particular questions about how en:Wikipedia categorization works, feel free to ask them here; if you have questions about the appropriateness of certain categories or about your suggestions for new categories, then pose them either here or at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Textile arts. -- Hoary (talk) 23:04, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
How do I propose a new Wikipedia page on an individual?
Daniel Horowitz (b. 1938) is Professor of American Studies, Emeritus, at Smith College. He is a much-published authority on American history and material culture whose new book Bear With Me: A Cultural History of Famous Bears in America is being published by the Duke University Press in August, 2025. Teddyart (talk) 19:30, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hello and welcome to the Help Desk. You can propose a new article at Requested Articles- but it is backlogged to the point of uselessness; if you believe an article should exist, the best thing you can do is create it yourself. It is a challenging process- but if you believe this professor meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable professor or more broadly a notable person- you should gather independent reliable sources that support any claims about this professor. You may use the Article Wizard to create and submit a draft. I'd suggest reading Your First Article as well. 331dot (talk) 19:44, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Teddyart, please read Wikipedia:Notability (academics) and also the similar guideline for creative professionals including authors. I read the publisher's description of the bear book and it sounds fascinating. But Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and a writing a book scheduled to be published six months from now is not a plausible claim of notability. If the book ends up being widely reviewed, then maybe the book ought to have an article at that time. See Wikipedia:Notability (books). So, the issue is whether or not the author/professor is notable now, based on his work to date. Cullen328 (talk) 20:44, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Teddyart One problem with finding sources for a potential article is that there is a lawyer with the same name: see Daniel Horowitz. If you could indicate here in this thread what you would consider to be the sources for a biography of the professor, we could advise further. The best sources need to meet our golden rules but some details can be filled out from simple statements, e.g. on a university website. Mike Turnbull (talk) 22:13, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

- Teddyart, get some practice improving existing articles about academics, and after some time doing that, embark on a draft. Finding sources shouldn't be difficult: just search for his name AND any one among "scripps college", "smith college", "morality of spending", "vance packard", "betty friedan", "anxieties of affluence". -- Hoary (talk) 23:42, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

Vertical formatting
At Template:Cite web there is a section that starts with: "Most commonly used parameters in vertical format
". If I'm using an WP:LDR is it acceptable to use a "vertical format"? Is there a MOS on how to format a citation's parameters? Should parameters be listed in a specific order (i.e. last name should always come before first name)? TipsyElephant (talk) 01:03, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- Many people use the vertical format for list-defined references. The order of the parameters doesn't matter to the template, but for the sake of later editors using the text editor with a vertical format where one often can't see all the parameters at once don't mix the parameters up too much. Its fine if the first name comes before the last name. StarryGrandma (talk) 20:43, 24 February 2025 (UTC)

- Here is the thing. WP:RFCBEFORE states that "RfCs are time consuming, and Wikipedia being a volunteer project, editor time is valuable" / "Editors should try to resolve their issues before starting an RfC" / "Try discussing the matter with any other parties on the related talk page" / "If you can reach a consensus or have your questions answered through discussion, then there is no need to start an RfC". --Jax 0677 (talk) 03:07, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
Extracting Images from British Museum to Commons?
Does anyone know if Wikipedia has some sort of contract/agreement with the British Museum that lets us upload their images onto Commons? I'm specifically trying to get this image onto an article I'm writing. Thanks! Unlimitedlead (talk) 03:59, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- Unlimitedlead, you could ask at Commons:Commons:Helpdesk, but a search of the archive there suggests not. There is a fairly old page at Wikipedia:GLAM/British Museum/Photos requested. TSventon (talk) 05:04, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Unlimitedlead: Images on the BM website are copyrighted and explicitly licensed only for non-commercial use (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0), which makes them ineligible for the Commons. And objects in low relief, like seals and coins, are still sufficiently 3D that they don't qualify for the PD-Art exception. But a drawing of this seal appears in Sandford's Genealogical History of the English Kings, pl. 55 (center right), which is in the public domain. Would that be a suitable alternative? Not the same as a photograph, but on the other hand the text is much easier to read. Crawdad Blues (talk) 03:42, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- I don't foresee myself using those images. But thank you for doing the research and bringing it to my attention. I appreciate it :) Unlimitedlead (talk) 03:53, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
For some reason all of my references are not going in my reference section in draft article.
Hello, I've been making my first article at Draft:Frank Elbridge Webb. I realized a section of mine was deficient and needed significant revisions, but not wanting to disturb the draft article itself I did the revision in my sandbox, User:1brianm7/sandbox. I completed the revision and copy-pasted it, but for some reason all of my references are not going in the reference section. I think it has something to do with referencing references that have already been referenced, but I have no clue how to fix it, having relied on the automatic citation tool.
Sorry if this is not the right place. c (talk) 06:30, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

Should Joshua Sturm have been moved to Joshua Sturm (musician) prior to rfd adjudication? --Jax 0677 (talk) 15:56, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

- (edit conflict) I said at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2025_February_19#Joshua_Sturm_(musician) that the RFD for Joshua Sturm should not have been started as we don't need to delete a redirect for Joshua Sturm (musician) to create an article for Joshua Sturm (alpine skier). If the alpine skier is notable and the musician is not, then the alpine skier will be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Other opinions are welcome. TSventon (talk) 16:23, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

Did I do this requested merge properly?
I have proposed to merge Chinese destroyer Shenzhen to type 051B destroyer(and subsequently rename type 051B destroyer to Chinese destroyer Shenzhen) because overall type 051B destroyer has more info(and links to other wikis), however per naming standards for single ship classes it should be Chinese destroyer Shenzhen. Page Mover: delete-redirect rights
I recently got Page Mover rights. According to the page we have the "delete-redirect" rights. How do we use it?
Nayuki is a redirect page I want to replace but when I try moving a draft over it, the move function doesn't work. I noticed users would G6 it but it doesn't seem I can do it?
For example in Walton Enterprises, the redirect was delete and then the draft was moved. How was that done?
Edit: I reread and it seems that this applies only to single revision redirects? Since the target redirect has 2 revisions because there was a bot edit, does that mean we cannot delete the redirect? Is the only option to perform a swap over it? Imcdc Contact 08:34, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Imcdc: As a non-admin with delete-redirect, you would have to move the redirect somewhere so it gets a single revision in the page history, but as a page mover you could also just move it without leaving a redirect. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:04, 24 February 2025 (UTC)

Are there any exceptions to copyright rules?
I found two websites(from the Guangxi provincial office of veterans affairs and Anhui Provincial office of national defense education, respectively) with Navy ship emblems of PLAN navy ships. Now, the full discussion is on here Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history#Chinese navy ship emblems(recommend you check it out) however we came to the conclusion that their copyright status was ambiguous at best(therefore instead of adding the emblem, I put an external media template linking to the photo of the emblem on ships like the Liaoning and Ningbo). May I ask if there are any exceptions to copyright rules? Thehistorianisaac (talk) 14:46, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Thehistorianisaac. Copyright law is exceptionally complex which is why many attorneys spend their entire careers working on its intricacies. However, on Wikipedia, things are a bit clearer. Unless it is unambiguously true that an image is not protected by copyright, then the only way to use it on the English Wikipedia is if it fully complies with the stringent restrictions regarding use of non-free images. Cullen328 (talk) 17:59, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- I just looked at those emblems and it is obvious that they are original, creative and highly complex, and therefore subject to copyright law. Unlike the United States federal government which releases the works of its employees into the public domain, the Chinese government retains copyright for 50 years. I see no ambiguity. They are copyrighted. Cullen328 (talk) 18:12, 24 February 2025 (UTC)

Publish logos complex from Facebook or X (formerly Twitter)
Hi wikis, One question, Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) are reliable sources regarding complex logos ,for example if I publish a complex logo from X (formerly Twitter) is it possible to keep this logo on Wikipedia in English?? (Google translator) AbchyZa22 (talk) 15:22, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, @AbchyZa22. There are several different things to unpack here.
- Forst, social media are not normally regarded as reliable, unless it's an authorised account, when it can be treated as a reliable self-published source; but this is only relevant for citations, not for graphics.
- Secondly, you would normally take a logo from the organisation's own website, but I suppose if they only put it on social media, there's no reason not to use it from there.
- Thirdly, logos are normally copyright (unless they are below the COM:Threshold of originality, which you say is not the case here), so they may not be uploaded to Commons, but they may be uploaded to English Wikipedia, provided all of the non-free content criteria are met. Among those criteria are that they may only be used in articles (not in drafts or user space); and an uploaded image must be used in at least one article. Please see LOGO for more information. - Yes, @AbchyZa22. Though it would have been preferable to take the image from an official website if possible: who is Aaron Zelin, and how do we know he hasn't just made that logo up? ColinFine (talk) 15:05, 25 February 2025 (UTC)

Simple Wikipedia - Bugatti Veyron is not a hypersonic car... can I fix this?
(See: https://simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bugatti_Veyron&action=info)
The Bugatti Veyron is described as a "hypersonic car" in the basic information page... how do I fix this? TheSaturnLover (talk) 03:34, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Simple.wp is a completely separate project from en.wp. You'd need to handle it on that project. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v threads critiques 03:37, 25 February 2025 (UTC)

How to edit on kindle.
Hello help desk, I need to know how to edit on a kindle. Regards, Wikalevi Wikalevi (talk) 06:22, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- See WP:DEVICES. Personally I don't recommend this because the features are limited on mobile devices.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:49, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Well, a mobile device doesn't necessarily mean mobile view. I'm typing this using the Convenient Discussions gadget, on my phone, in desktop view. It involves a lot of zooming and scrolling, though. I tend to switch between the mobile app (straightforward source editing) and desktop view in a browser (all the features but harder to navigate the page) depending what I'm doing, sometimes copying text between the two. Sometimes it's useful to see the different appearance between mobile and desktop view, and having both available on the same device is useful. And a big advantage on my phone is that I can have templates and the like saved as clipboard entries, and can type a huge range of extra characters without needing to remember character codes or tricky key combinations. Performed edit request
Hi! I am a returning Wikipedian, and I have forgotten quite a lot. For instance, I performed the two edits that were requested here: Talk:Italian_American_Museum_of_Los_Angeles#Some_proposed_changes_and_additions_to_Exhibits_section but I don't know what to do with the two templates. They are: { { edit COI | R } } . Should I just remove them? Or, add "| answered=yes" so it will be like this: { { edit COI | R | answered = yes } } ? Thank you! Lova Falk (talk) 09:28, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Lova Falk, see {{Edit COI}}, use { { edit COI | A } } or { { edit COI | answered = yes } }. TSventon (talk) 09:38, 25 February 2025 (UTC)

Album tracklist source
What sources should i use for album tracklists? Many articles i see don't have any references added to tracklists AshOregano (talk) 10:01, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi AshOregano as per WP:TRACKLISTING "Track listings can be sourced to liner notes (WP:PRIMARY) as a definitive WP:VERIFIABLE source without the usual WP:SECONDARY sourcing requirements of most Wikipedia content." - Unreleased albums will need WP:SECONDARY sources. Best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 11:11, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- And what about track lengths? AshOregano (talk) 11:38, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
The singer's template doesn't show
I'm mobile Wikipedia user, but I can't see singer templates such as {{Aurora (singer)}} on articles. But if I change my condition to desktop mode, it pops up. Is there any way to see these templates on mobile conditions? Camilasdandelions (talk!) 14:05, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Currently no navigation template can be shown in the mobile view. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 16:10, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Why? :( Camilasdandelions (talk!) 16:16, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Navigation templates have not been shown in mobile from the start because they can't be properly reformatted to fit on a phone screen. Contributors are working on addressing it, but there's no word on how soon it can be done. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 17:44, 25 February 2025 (UTC)

President & CEO of a foundation official headshot?
I am trying to add a photo of the current president and CEO of the Charles F. Kettering Foundation. Are we allowed to grab her photo from the Kettering Foundation website and upload it for use in the Wikipedia article on the foundation? Flyonthewindscreen86 (talk) 15:23, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
The Foundation's web site says "© 2025. The Kettering Foundation. All Rights Reserved." So, no. Maproom (talk) 15:31, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, that's what I though. I'd need to find a photo of her that isn't protected by any copyrights. Flyonthewindscreen86 (talk) 16:02, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- If she makes public appearances, the easiest way may be to take a picture yourself, @Flyonthewindscreen86 ColinFine (talk) 18:26, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
simple wikipedia page creation
I created a wikipedia page. It was declined because my sources are not reliable.
I got an email from someone saying they would edit my page to a simple wikipedia page that would be accepted with these same sources in only 3-4 days for the low low price of $800.
My question is: where can I find information on how to create a simple wikipedia page myself? I have been searching for information but all I can find is how to view a page in the simple format. While I realize the simple version is not as visible as a regular page, if that's all I can get until the New York Times finds me, I'll take it.
Please advise. Jpiper16 (talk) 15:28, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Jpiper16, the person who emailed you is almost certainly a scammer. They'll take your $800, but if they ever do get the promised article accepted, it's likely soon to be deleted.
- The problem with your draft isn't that the sources aren't reliable (yes, that boilerplate notice is badly worded); it's that they don't demonstrate that Godot is notable, in Wikipedia's idiosyncratic sense. Click on that blue link to learn about "reliable published independent sources with extensive discussion of the subject". Maproom (talk) 15:39, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, @Jpiper16. My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft. If you don't follow this advice but try to create an article without this preparation, you are likely to have a frustrating and disappointing experience with Wikipedia. (I know your account's been around for more than a year, but you have made only 23 edits, almost all of them to that draft). ColinFine (talk) 18:29, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
