Followup on RD/C post about "current IP" not in rangeblock

[edit]

Hi zzuuzz, this is just a update from me regarding that RD/C post where the university's IP was somehow blocked from editing even though the IP did not actually fall into the blocked IP range that was displayed in the block message.

Just today, I stumbled across the same thing on my phone's 4G cellular network! Earlier today I've had to switch over to my phone hotspot from my home FTTP broadband due to a major network outage apparently caused by an act of "vandalism" on a fibre/copper cable running along underneath a bridge (that's what Chorus has said on their website), which is still unresolved as of now. Anyways, if I click the edit button on a private browsing window, I get a "This IP address is blocked from editing" banner, and it will say that the blocked IP range is 122.56.192.0/20. This is the exact same IP range that I had previously encountered over at university. However, it also says that my current IP address is 115.189.89.153, which does not fit into that 122.56.x.x range.

If I go to the talk page button in the upper-right corner and do a preview on a talk page message submission, the IP address that appears is the current one and not an address that is in that blocked range, and there is no red banner saying that the current IP address is blocked anywhere on the page either.

One very important thing worth noting, is that earlier today, i.e. several connection resets ago, the "current IP address" I was on, was actually in that blocked 122.56.x.x range! So I'm guessing this could be some sort of "caching" or maybe an "autoblock" thing that's going on (although it does not say anywhere on the IP blocked banner that it is an autoblock).

I'm not actually asking for help, I just thought I'd add to the curiosity and let you know that this issue is not exclusive to the university network only, as you can see. — AP 499D25 (talk) 12:42, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. -- zzuuzz (talk) 02:17, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The next day, the 'rangeblock' had cleared up, although my IP address still stayed the same at 115.189.89.153. — AP 499D25 (talk) 04:56, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

... when I need a check on weird. Here are the accounts:

I blocked 'em all as NOTHERE, although it's pretty obvious they're either socks or meat. Are there others? Is this an LTA (I'm guessing yes)? There are also some pages I deleted that have interesting stuff, like "Yoshi is bad and fat. Bbbbbbbb." (Adlorpy's userpage), which seems to be a reference to me, and wasn't there a functionary whose username was similar to Yoshi a long time ago?--Bbb23 (talk) 00:51, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The UTRS appeal of Use your username (see their Talk page) has some lovely thoughts.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:57, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
More data for you: Chloe is a fish. This one I blocked as a sock.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:45, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You missed LlamaBoy2 (see deleted). Officially that's all confirmed. We have an article about Yoshi. I'd go with that type of interpretation; other things they're saying say to me that it's a small child. I don't have any more information than that - maybe it's not their first time editing, I'd be surprised if they rank in the LTAs. -- zzuuzz (talk) 02:17, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I don't know if you can see the latest UTRS update (I guess you can see it). DarwinandBrianEdits, aka MidAtlanticBaby is the other user. -- zzuuzz (talk) 02:38, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still hung up on my Yoshi memory, but your explanation seems more likely. Any reason why you didn't block LlamaBoy2?--Bbb23 (talk) 13:02, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
None. I thought I might leave that to you since you're already in the game. I wonder if you're thinking of Yunshui? -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:12, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What game is that? :-) Yes!!! Yunshui. Very polite fellow. I wonder what happened to him?--Bbb23 (talk) 13:19, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. I did see a communication where they said they were calmly (presumably quietly) retiring from Wikipedia. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:25, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the sock was referring to User talk:Yunshui, nice fella. On bureaucrat's noticeboard, I observed Yunshui had requested through email for his permissions to be removed. —usernamekiran (talk) 17:34, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23: As soon as I saw Use your username I was confident that I had seen the same person before, using more than one account, at least one of which had "username"in it though I don't remember the usernames. If zzuuzz, with magic CU powers, tells me I'm wrong then I'll believe it, but I'm fairly confident. However, I think it was fairly recent, so we may not be in LTA territory. JBW (talk) 09:44, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's quite possible that the "username" child has had other accounts. Checkuser here returns results which show a clear connection, but limited to those above over a few days. And when I say connection, I mean it clearly shows they're the same user (and not for example siblings or a school). Separately, the results for DarwinandBrianEdits (as seen at UTRS) are also fairly clear. So I'm not saying anyone was wrong. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:17, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Start with Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/A Rainbow Footing Itand the 3 named accounts: ShinyAlbatross (filer, created 9/1/24); KSDerek (accused sock, created 9/8/24); and A Rainbow Footing It (accused master, created 11/25/23). The one I'm most suspicious of is ShinyAlbatross, partly instinct and partly because they seem to know far more than they should - and username, so many socks like colorful usernames. Also, wasn't there at least one fetish LTA? Naturally, I can't remember the master's name.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:18, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I see what you mean, and doesn't that all look like fun. I'm not familiar with any Asian fetish LTA, so don't have anything to really compare to. (this LTA is mentioned in the SPI, and is WP:LTA/BMX, and they're going to be unrelated to any non-obvious LTA edits). Not seeing much else to go on.. I'll have to have a think about the SPI .. the accounts appear unrelated. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:31, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm gonna try not to think about the SPI. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:41, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You remember the discussion about user names?

That last one I reported that you blocked, is it OK to report that type at UAA? I've remembered what you said and realised I might have got it wrong again? Knitsey (talk) 13:59, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No complaints here. You see there's really offensive, and there's really really offensive. Having said that, there's a 50% chance someone will wipe it out anyway (a lot higher if it had edited something). -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:02, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Username similarity

[edit]

ZZenyx, created August 17, created hoax User:ZZenyx/Typhoon Isaac (Julian) (said they were just having fun). Didn't like my deletion. Took me to AN for "misconduct". Probable storm sock. See also this edit to the Wikipedia sandbox where they mention "Skibidi toilet", something I've seen a lot of in VOAs and socks, although I'm not really sure why. Who is it?--Bbb23 (talk) 00:55, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Who keeps mentioning Skibidi toilet? 90% of Generation Alpha. See Skibidi Toilet, maybe especially the 'see also' section. I think I'll need more data for the other stuff. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:47, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alphas huh? Maybe it's the ones who never properly completed potty training. I'm aware of our article, but I still stick to my own experience on Wikipedia that the users I've noticed referring to it are either socks or vandals - or trolls.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:12, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HurricaneKirk2024’s unfortunate and unnecessary encounter with SPI

[edit]

I am going to bring this up here (I also pinged you to the SPI page); since you were on the recently active list.

Can you please close the SPI(s) on HurricaneKirk2024? Because no one (not even the one who originally reported him) thinks he’s a sockpuppet anymore. He has no idea what’s going on. I had to explain to him what a closing admin does. He’s genuinely a new editor who was unlucky enough to choose the wrong username.

The relevant pages are: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Lokicat3345; Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Andrew5.

I brought this issue up with two other administrators and also pinged every administrator/CU who has ever commented on Lokicat hoping for a response. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 22:58, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[2] is this a serious threat? It reads to me to be a threat. Knitsey (talk) 11:33, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that doesn't look good. It looks like there's a bit of history to this relationship... -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:47, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds like a serious threat to me too. Threat to family, death threat, threat to dox, police, etc (not going to quote directly). I didn't revert as frankly, I wouldn't feel safe doing so. First time I've felt like that tbh. Knitsey (talk) 11:55, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sod it, I've reverted and left a level 4 warning for such threats. Knitsey (talk) 12:00, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know, since we edit-conflicted doing that. I'm trying to resist the urge to insta-ban (I know a few esteemed admins who would have no hesitation), but I can say that it's not the sort of thing one can say twice with impunity. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:09, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Redacted post?

[edit]

I'm approaching you because you helped me four years ago when I'd been hit by a sitewide IP block by an over-zealous steward whose email was closed and I could post nowhere (I didn't then know about UTRS or the bits of meta which might have been accessible), and because you have magic goggles. As an earnest of good faith, that incident inspired me to write WP:VULTURE.

This isn't to me alarming, but it's odd. My edit history shows a redacted post at 18:05 2024-10-19. You won't need to scroll deep, it's in the top half-dozen. It's one of the remarkable set of several dozen consecutive redactions in WP:ANI history between 12:39 2023-1019 and 20:45 the same day (2nd 500 as I write). My post may be the one visible in WP:ANI#Persistent edit warring in Balkans-related articles beginning "A good example".

Should you wish to contact me privately - though I see no need, this is beyond my pay grade - my email is open. Narky Blert (talk)

@Narky Blert: So a strikethrough by a double line in suppression, whereas a strike with a single line (as can often be seen in the history of this page) is revision deletion, with this being an example of the former. Since the revision you edited still contained a copy of the offending text, it also gets wiped. You can sometimes get a hint about what the problem was by looking at the first suppressed edit, which is where the text was introduced, as well as the first edit after suppression, which is where the text was removed. It's fairly normal for ANI to have loads of redaction as it's a busy page and things might not get noticed immediately, which means there's a load of revisions containing the verboten text. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:37, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, gottit! Narky Blert (talk) 05:07, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,
