Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference

[edit]

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on

[edit]

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand – update and discussion (15 minutes)

[edit]

Update from President, WANZ

[edit]

In the last month the committee have approved and submitted the business plan and budget funding request to the General Funds Grant committee. The President and Executive Admin organised and delivered WikiCon 2024 in Auckland. The event was attended by 20 people. It reconnected some Auckland editors that hadn't caught up in person since the last WikiCon held in Auckland in 2021. The presentation by the Summer Interns of Auckland Museum was a particular highlight for attendees and we were pleased to hear that group have support to attend the ESEAP Conference in Malaysia in May. We have a survey in place for both attendees and non-attendees of WikiCon 2024 to seek feedback on the event and give advice on what you'd like to see at WikiCon 2025. This event will be held in Christchurch and will be organised by Giantflightlessbirds and MurialMary with assistance from the Executive Administrator, Dianne. Dates for the conference are to be confirmed.

The committee are next preparing for the AGM in May. If you're not a member of the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand incorporated society and you'd like to indicate your support for those who are working hard to obtain funding for events and activities, please apply to join the society. Here's the google form link to sign up. The subscription is $5 per annum.

Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2024

[edit]
If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!
  • 9 March & 13 April 2024 Wellington Photography and Wikimedia Commons Event Currently timetabled for 1 - 5pm at Photospace at 37 Courtenay Place, Wellington. Quilt Phase's WANZ funding application successful. How did it go?
  • Auckland meetup: 4 May 2024, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, New Lynn War Memorial Library.
  • 2024 Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant After conversations with Wikimedia Australia, the focus has moved to the 1Lib1Ref campaign in May. These grants will not be offered in 2024. There has been less interest in the grants and larger grants for specific projects is being trialled to test whether this is a better strategy to get engagement from the editing community. Discussion by group about this and a suggestion that mentors undertaking mentoring on particular projects might consider applying for funding to obtain support for training.
  • Content: New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.
Project Contacts: DrThneed DrThneed has been contacted about presenting on this project to the Christchurch Library.
  • Content: New Zealand National Parks Project launched with the goal of bringing the articles of the 14 national parks up to Good Article status. Sign up if you want to help. After WIkicon Auckland feedback was given to concentrate on the less popular National park articles. Alexeyevitch says his good review request hasn't been given a reviewer yet and User:Giantflightlessbirds has said he'll see if he can prioritise this.

Anyone know of or organising any other events or content projects? Note here to let the group know.

  • Wikidata Levelling Up Days events This is an online event designed to welcome new people to Wikidata and to provide an introduction to a selection of useful tools and topics so you can start getting involved with Wikidata. During April 5-7 and April 12-14 there will be presentations, live editing and social events.

Round table for participants

[edit]

Opportunity to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated. You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • Alexeyevitch(talk) - Not much on-wiki recently, still waiting for my GAN (Good Article Nomination) to be reviewed... I attended the in-person meetup in Tūranga earlier this month.
  • Ambrosia10 (talk)- Busy - made 5 submissions to Wikimania, confirmed I'm heading to Chicago for the Biodiversity Heritage Library annual meeting to report on the BHL-Wiki working group, worked on the Hidden Figures Wikidata module which will get trialled with my co-authors class this coming week, we'll then finish it off and submit it to BECEENET for publication on the Qubes website. We're also starting to draft up a publication on this work in an education journal. The women genera data analysis is still on going. Once complete we'll continue on our scholarly publication for this. The International Botanical Congress Project is on going - I'm still working on wikifying participants and we're starting to draft up a Wikidata poster and organise our workshop. The WikiProject Te Papa research expeditions work is progressing well, I'm starting to have one on one meetings with some staff to get their expedition information and am starting to organise a likely public facing Wikipedia editathon - more details will be announced at a later date. And finally User:Giantflightlessbirds and I have been updating the Wikipedia page for the New Zealand endemic moth the frosted phoenix after it was observed for the first time in 65 years and is now regarded as definitely NOT EXTINCT!
  • DrThneed
  1. Delivered two training sessions and a lightning talk in Auckland. Now working on sorting out a series of follow-up online sessions to upskill people interested in learning OpenRefine.
  2. Have been invited to go and talk about the thesis project at University of Canterbury. Yay!
  3. Still keeping up with #1woman1day for woman in red. I will eventually run out of NZ-based professors and emeritus professors (less than a hundred to go) so am considering what to focus on next (have a listeria of honours recipients, so may pick the interesting people out of that)
  4. Will put in a proposal for a remote talk at Wikimania.
  • Paora (talk) – Attended WikiCon in Auckland last weekend, and following the OpenRefine session have begun using it to create Wikidata items for papers published in AHA: Architectural History Aotearoa; then creating Wikidata items for paper authors lacking them. Also following kōrero at WikiCon, have begun organising Wikipedia:Meetup/Auckland 22, to be held at New Lynn War Memorial Library on Saturday 4 May from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Otherwise, just doing the usual gardening activities. Notable New Zealand women who have died in the last month include: Michal McKay, Jocelyn Munro, Caryll Clausen (currently a redirect), and Bernadette Farnan: see 2024 in New Zealand#Deaths#March for more details. Article on Richard Washbourn created at Wikipedia:Meetup/Mohua / Golden Bay was included in Did You Know on the main page this week.
  • Giantflightlessbirds – Continuing with the Aotearoa Wikipedian at Large project, setting up residencies with a few other organisations and modelling art gallery exhibitions with Christchurch Art Gallery (to present at NDF later this year). The frosted phoenix was recently rediscovered and I worked with the photographer to get his iNaturalist licence changed to CC BY so we could get the pics into Commons (handout to prepare). Also advising several National Science Challenges and scheduling a project with Resilience National Science Challenge in August. An Easter Trip to Banks Peninsula got me interested in doing some Wikisource again as I found a 1915 local history that's in Google Books. This will be the example document I'll present to Chch Libraries. I gave a talk to the local branch of the Entomological Society about Wikipedia and Commons and iNaturalist—some locals are keen to participate, including the world expert on New Zealand cockroaches, so am preparing a project with Canterbury Museum on that.
  • David Nind: Not too much, mainly just validating pages for Wikisource (one book finished).
  • Oronsay - Worked on one or two women articles, updated literary awards, done some mix’n’match work and also a bit of Wikisource, and a tiny bit of Wikicommons work. Really pleased she liberated a redirect, created article about Winifred West, who went to a private school that Oronsay had attended. She obtained some library materials and found 1913 image of her. Oronsay has also done lots of work on behind the scenes women in red. Slow progress to get to 20% but we'll get there eventually!.=
  • Catsandthings - Got back into editing thanks to the conference in Auckland. Did some editing on the Dune Part 1 film but got told off as the article was in a good article review. But also got thanked for her edits. She wants to work on the Dune Novel page had gone in - whole paragraph to the gender section. How do I sort this out? Original research - citation needed. Gave https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Books page and improve it significantly The group pointed her to the Wikipedia:WikiProject books for guidance and suggested she follow their advice and also explain what she's wanting to do on the article talk page. The group also pointed her to the WikiProject Film group.. as there was a discussion about improving film articles as well. She's looking forward to learning more about scholia.

Review of questions raised during round table

[edit]
  • WikiCommons question from User:David Nind re https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Institution he wants to know whether he should create a template for the overarching organisation that covers the museum, archives, and art gallery, or alternatively make one for each of institution. Group recommended one for each institution.
