Include Company is Wiki

[edit]

I wish to include my employer name in wiki, how to go about it? 175.136.254.105 (talk) 02:28, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Does your company have an article? If not it'll need to meet Wikipedia's notability policy before it would be able to be created. StarryNightSky11 03:02, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please also read Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) for the more specific notability guideline for companies. Cullen328 (talk) 03:41, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I added a famous Japanese model to add a source, but it was removed because it was considered an organized advertisement. I made a counter-argument, but it was quickly dismissed. What should I do in this case?~ ~ ~ ~ Tomatopastalove (talk) 05:11, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tomatopastalove. Typically what you should do in a case like this is follow Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and use the article's corresponding talk page to see if yoou can establish a WP:CONSENSUS in favor of the edit you want to make. You should base your argument on relevant Wikipedia polcies and guidelines because that's the best way to convince others that the edit is an improvement that should be made. What you shouldn't try to do is force through the edit you want to make. Most likely it will end up being reverted again, and could possibly lead to WP:EDITWARRING. That does nobody any good any often ends up with a Wikipedia administrator stepping in and taking action against all or some of those involved. It's up to you per WP:ONUS to convince others that the content you want to add is an improvement and the best way to try and do that is through discussion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:21, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote it in a notebook, but it was deleted without any discussion. I just want to volunteer to add Japanese models to the English Wikipedia Tomatopastalove (talk) 05:26, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Tomatopastalove. "add[ing] X to the English Wikipedia" almost always means "creating a well-sourced and neutrally written encyclopaedia article about X in Wikipedia": - nothing less. If the models in question meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability (roughly, that several people unconnected with them have written about them at some length and been published in reliable sources), then articles about them could be written. But only then should they be added to any lists. See write the article first. ColinFine (talk) 11:33, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Adding content

[edit]

I want to add a brief description of my contribution to science. How do I do that? 24.187.157.131 (talk) 15:00, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You don't, due to the conflict of interest that presents- as well as due to the fact that Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources say about a topic. Please review these links. If you have independent reliable sources that discuss your work, please make a formal edit request on the relevant article talk page. 331dot (talk) 15:03, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@331dot: What was the old default skin? Apparently thats what I was using before, and I was not expecting the new skin to apply to everyone. RudolfRed (talk) 16:46, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
RudolfRed There was an announcement about the skin changing, I think the old one off the top of my head was called Vector 2010, the new one is Vector 2022. 331dot (talk) 16:51, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The new redesign is completely terrible on desktop. Loads of wasted space and mobil-ification in the design. The Internet is more than just phones. Can we please get Wikipedia fixed for desktop browsers? It's a pretty major loss to have one of the world's most visited sites destroyed on desktop. In my opinion all of the changes on desktop should be revered. I can't see anything worth saving here. 2600:1700:1471:2550:1430:24A8:CA10:2DC (talk) 20:40, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to restore old Wikipedia page layout

[edit]

For some reason, all the articles in Wikipedia look like this for me at the moment [1]https://imgur.com/a/YzAoTG2

How can I change it back to the classic article layout of [2]https://imgur.com/a/StCwiJs where the main menu is always visible in the side? 161.97.220.135 (talk) 16:48, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to create an account and set your account preferences to the prior skin. 331dot (talk) 16:49, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Changing to the prior skin mostly worked but there's still a lot of blank space [3]https://imgur.com/a/HdGBXhW compared to before. Is there any way to remove the blank space? Matematica6 (talk) 17:03, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I was willing to try the new "improved" skin, but there are a couple of problems with it:
  1. It's squeezed into the middle of my screen, fully 50% of the display is wasted. Why doesn't it adjust to the available real estate?
  2. Where has the watchlist gone? I found the inconvenient dropdown "personal pages", but the watchlist is missing.
I'll wait until the bugs are sorted out before trying again. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 17:06, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Martin of Sheffield - At the top right of any page, the link with the word "Watchlist" has been replaced with an icon of three horizontal lines and a star. GoingBatty (talk) 17:13, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Martin of Sheffield: The watchlist now is (was in my case as I quickly restored the 2010 version) found via its own icon at the top of the page. I needed to hover over it to find what it meant... Eagleash (talk) 17:16, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) EH? Why on earth? It's so obvious NOT that "three horizontal lines and a star" means watchlist! <next comment deleted on reflection> Martin of Sheffield (talk) 17:18, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Who changed this and why? Who asked for this change? Everything looks ugly now. This site has become the next IMDb. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 17:46, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please give us the option to have the old Wikipedia layout on desktop browsers. The new version is awful. Can we get old.wiki.riteme.site or something like Reddit did with their mobile-first redesign? 2600:1700:1471:2550:1430:24A8:CA10:2DC (talk) 20:43, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Are you asking about a sudden change to Wikipedia's appearance? It is because the default skin has changed from the Vector legacy (2010) skin to the new Vector (2022) skin. If you would like to change back to the old one, you can, as a registered user, click on the in the top-right corner and choose Preferences. Once there, go to Preferences → Appearance → Skins → Tick Vector legacy (2010).
If you would like to leave feedback, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:59, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disable limited content mode by default

[edit]

With the new Wikipedia design, the "limited content mode" is enabled by default when loading a page. This mode makes the content inconvenient to read as one has to scroll more. It also makes content on some pages too condensed or plain unreadable (e.g. the table in https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/AVX-512#CPUs_with_AVX-512).

Please, either disable the "limited content mode" by default or at least make it persistent across all Wikipedia pages and across page reloads. 2A02:2168:84D9:2200:D6CB:69C2:6A20:23C2 (talk) 17:20, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're going to want to sign up for an account and go Preferences → Appearance → Skin → Tick Vector legacy (2010). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:40, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Both of those options (for logged out users) have already been discussed and rejected for various reasons by the design team. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:41, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone back to the old skin because TBH the new skin isn't to my taste. However, you can only do this via the preferences of a logged in user. If you are browsing via an IP address, you're stuck with the new skin.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:50, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So what you're saying is one has to register in Wikipedia now to be able to read articles properly? This is unacceptable to me. 2A02:2168:84D9:2200:D6CB:69C2:6A20:23C2 (talk) 18:05, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You do have one option - see this post which mentions setting up a browser extension. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:09, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your other option is to get used to the new skin. Also, it's more anonymous to have an account, not less. 331dot (talk) 18:25, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are other reasons for not wanting to have an account. I've been editing for approaching 20 years without one, and if I did decide to register one I'd probably use my own name. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.194.245.235 (talk) 18:48, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New interface?

[edit]

Something has happened to my 'view'. Wikipedia looks completely different and the toolbar has changed with graphics instead of words, some things have been added that I don't need and others have been hidden or taken away. Is there a way to revert to my old interface as the current one simply doesn't work for me? Can you reply or notify me on my talk page as my watchlist 'button' is one of the things that has disappeared? --Ykraps (talk) 18:22, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ykraps You can change back to the old skin in your account preferences. The old one was "Vector 2010". 331dot (talk) 18:24, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Can someone explain why Wikipedia is constantly trying to drive its editors away by making these pointless and disruptive changes? It is particularly annoying for us older, less computer savvy, editors. It took me a long time to learn how to edit and I'm not going to be re-learning in a hurry. --Ykraps (talk) 19:00, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
More information is at Vector 2022. Feel free to leave feedback on the talk page (Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022 - there is also a link to the MediaWiki talk page at the top). 199.208.172.35 (talk) 19:03, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ykraps I can't speak for the WMF, but I think it's important to note that experienced editors should find it relatively easy to adapt to the new skin—and if you really can't stand it, it takes all of five mouse clicks to switch back to Vector 2010. On the other hand, the new skin is supposed to be more approachable for newer editors, for whom the old skin is intimidating, arcane, and frankly archaic in some aspects. This new skin is just one of many efforts made by the design team to improve the user experience—some more effectual than others. A change that seems of negligible importance to you (who already are familiar with the UI) may have a much greater positive impact on a new user. Shells-shells (talk) 20:30, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any evidence at all for that? I consider myself an experienced editor and I find it disruptive and confusing. It might well have taken 5 mouse clicks had I known what was required but I did not and even after it was explained to me, I still had to locate the preference button, which had been hidden away in a sub-menu. The log on button has also been hidden by the way. Newer editors are likely to be younger with much more 'tech' familiarity and are therefore not likely to be deterred by an 'intimidating skin'. Furthermore, is this really what Wikipedia is spending its money on because I am feeling less inclined to donate in the future? --Ykraps (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My source is that I (as a somewhat experienced editor) found it relatively easy to adapt to the new skin when I switched to it a few months ago. I can also point you to the statistic given in the RfC: On average, 87% of active editors across our pilot wikis (incl. French and Portuguese Wikipedias) continue to use the new skin once they try it. Combining these two pieces of evidence, I infer that editors as experienced as myself will not have a particularly hard time adapting to the new skin. And I expect most every change is disruptive and confusing, to a greater or a lesser extent, until one adapts to it; the point is that I do not expect this period of disruption and confusion to last very long at all.
There are, I think, more important reasons not to donate to the WMF than simply their development of this new skin; I have seen it suggested that the Internet Archive is a better donation target for those wanting to support libre content on the web. Editing a wiki page

[edit]

Hello: There is new information regarding Henry Hudson’s voyage of 1609. The following paragraph, which is on the wiki page (Henry Hudson, https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Henry_Hudson)should be replaced with the paragraph below. Can someone please make this edit?

The old information on the wiki page: On 6 September 1609, John Colman of his crew was killed by natives with an arrow to his neck.[24] Hudson sailed into the Upper New York Bay on 11 September,[25] and the following day encountered a group of 28 Lenape canoes, buying oysters and beans from the Native Americans, and then began a journey up what is now known as the Hudson River.[26] Over the next ten days his ship ascended the river, reaching a point near Kinderhook, and the ship's boat with five crew members ventured to the vicinity of present-day Albany.[27]

The new information: Henry Hudson entered Lower New York Bay on September 3, 1609. Hudson attempted to sail up the Arthur Kill, but it was shoaled and too shallow for navigation. He anchored in Lower New York Bay for the evening. On September 4th, Hudson sailed north through the straight known as “The Narrows”, which is the current location of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. He anchored off northern Staten Island, near the entrance of the Kill Van Kull. On September 6th, Hudson sent five men in a skiff into the Kill Van Kull. They reached Newark Bay, where the men were attached by Native Americans. Crewman John Colman, was killed. The four surviving men remained overnight in the skiff and returned to Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, the next day. Colman was buried at a point of land, likely the area of St. George, Staten Island. Hudson then traveled north, up the river which bears his name. The Half Moon probably reached as far as north as Houghtaling Island. On September 22 Hudson sent men further north in the skiff. The skiff probably reached present day Albany. On September 23rd, Hudson began the return trip down river. On October 4th, Hudson exited the mouth of the river and sailed eastward, back to Europe.

The new information is available from the following source:

Hello IP user. Normally, you could make this change yourself, but I see that Henry Hudson is semi-protected, so an unregistered user won't be able to edit it. So the best thing to do in that case is to put your request on the talk page Talk:Henry Hudson: if you include the template call {{Edit semiprotected}}, this will put your request on a list of edits awaited.
Incidentally, I note that the PDF you link to contains the contents, and then skips to page 106, so it does not actually contain the paper you are referencing. This is not a fatal problem - sources do not have to be online - but it might be less confusing not to include the URL at all. ColinFine (talk) 22:03, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, IP user, if you are copying information directly from somewhere else, that's a copyright violation. David10244 (talk) 05:53, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This new interface is awful. How exactly did the Wikipedia community come to this decision? The Tips of Apmh 19:18, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@331dot: I am asking when and where the community asked for this change, and if we can change it back. The Tips of Apmh 19:24, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Tips of Apmh The page I directed you to should answer many of those types of questions. I don't believe it was a community choice, but I'm not certain. The web design team is trying to balance making things easier for new editors and preserving features existing editors like. Again, you can switch to the old one if you prefer it. 331dot (talk) 19:26, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @The Tips of Apmh -- thanks for commenting on the new experience (and thank you @331dot for adding some info). The project to build this new skin has been unfolding for a few years, and we have involved community members along the way in as many ways as we could, but it has been difficult to reach everyone along the way. On English Wikipedia, there was an RfC a couple months ago about the decision to deploy where some 300 community members participated, and the conclusion was that the deployment could go ahead with some of the community's most desired changes.
I'm sorry you're not liking it, and it would be great to hear more details on your thoughts. MMiller (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
300 people. In November. How much of a percentage of the active editor-volunteers would that be and I have to wonder what percentage of Wikipedia's readership are 300 people. And how many IP-editors posted their thoughts. They now have to use the new editing tool-system/the new skin and they have no real way to opt-out. Shearonink (talk) 08:11, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I use Wikipedia every day and there really is no replacement for it. There are no alternatives. Breaking Wikipedia for desktop browsers is kind of a major deal. [edit]

Hi Just a suggestion - would it be possible to add a "Back to top" button? Some articles are very long, and a button on the page to move quickly back to the top would be useful. Cheers 2A00:23C6:1058:CC01:4549:A406:EF98:58FF (talk) 19:56, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The new Vector 2022 table of contents, displayed in the lefthand column by default, has (Top) near the top, which takes you to the top of the page. If you collapse it, though, you do have to move back manually. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:09, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Revert to Old Design?

[edit]

How do I change back to the previous design? This new design is terrible. It looks like someone started a project and gave up 25% of the way through writing the CSS. It looks like you have to create an account to do this? Who made this decision? This is just bad. How is this design "easier for editors"? I don't see any difference with the editing tools. It's just the overall stylesheet of the website that is messed up. It looks like it's half trying to load a mobile page, and half trying to load a desktop page. 216.209.189.51 (talk) 20:32, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You can change the setting back to Old Vector (the layout pre-redesign) by creating an account. Explodicator7331 (talk) 20:37, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The deployment of it as the default skin was decided by RfC back in September 2022. The deployment is also currently being discussed at the village pump. Unfortunately the only way to revert to the old default skin is to create an account. Sideswipe9th (talk) 20:40, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I'm resistant to change, but I agree the new look gives an overall impression of an incomplete, borderless college project. I have tried "switching to old look", with Vector as my preference, but the new default remains, sadly.--Kieronoldham (talk) 20:46, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I've just tested setting my skin back to "Vector legacy (2010)" at the preferences page and it seems to work for me. The only reasons I could think of where "Vector (2022)" would override the old skin is if you've got it set as an override in your Global Preferences, or if after making the change back to the old skin and you're using a browser with multiple tabs that you've not refreshed your tab. Sideswipe9th (talk) 21:14, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per discussion at VPT (boy is that a monster of a thread), there were issues during the rollout with local preferences not "sticking". I think they've been resolved now. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:19, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it's a monster of a thread, I'm still reading through it and hadn't seen that there was an issue with preferences not sticking. Thanks for letting me know! Sideswipe9th (talk) 21:21, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved on the second attempt for me, Sideswipe9th.--Kieronoldham (talk) 21:26, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Was the old design really that broken? If it isn't broke don't fix it, kind of thing. 216.209.189.51 (talk) 21:06, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Few - if any - of us 'round here were involved in the decision to update the skin. You can read the reasoning of those who were involved here, with further explanations at the link at the end of that section. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:13, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the five screenshots posted here under "Top of an Article", it honestly looks like the main goal behind this was to encourage users to register, or to at least remain logged-in. I believe it has often been a topic of debate within wikipedia, whether or not the website should support IP users, and I honestly wonder if this was why they chose this path. Thank you for the link! 216.209.189.51 (talk) 22:10, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I do agree that it was designed to encourage users to register as they make the register button easy to find and they also allow registered users to opt out but not IP addresses Qwv (talk) 23:08, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The old design wasn't broken on desktop browsers and really shouldn't have been changed. At least not so radically. The Internet is supposed to support all connected devices. This mobile obsession in web design is killing the web on desktop. Please, whoever has the power to fix this, fix this. Wikipedia is far too important to be so degraded on desktop. 2600:1700:1471:2550:1430:24A8:CA10:2DC (talk) 21:02, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
More information is at Vector 2022. Feel free to leave feedback on the talk page (Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022). There's not much anyone here at the help desk can do. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:04, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This post has some instructions on setting up a browser extension. More information is at Vector 2022; feel free to leave feedback on the talk page I linked at the beginning of this reply. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:53, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

With the new skin is there any way to remove or hide the "X languages"/ "Add languages" link in the upper right corner? I only know one language so I don't foresee myself ever using it. Rockfang (talk) 21:43, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Rockfang: I do not believe there is a way in the preferences, but I assume that is a rather easy CSS task. Maybe ask at Wikipedia:User_scripts/Requests? TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 10:20, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ability to go back to old version/increase width of articles

[edit]

Hi is there a way to go back to the old version or increase the width of the articles? I've just got a ton of waster space on my screen. 2600:4040:296E:C200:205D:7776:DA06:DE53 (talk) 22:06, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Easiest thing to do is to register an account and go to Preferences → Appearance → Skins → Tick Vector legacy (2010). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:08, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor, there is indeed a width toggle. It will appear at the bottom right of your browser window when it gets wide enough - it looks like a little box with either a smaller box or a cross-like symbol inside it. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 22:13, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Something has changed about Wikipedia formatting

[edit]
I cannot access my preferences. I am confused about the apparently new formatting. Please contact me on the Commons if you have an answer for me. Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 22:51, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Krok6kola: Click on the in the top-right corner and then click "Preferences" from the dropdown menu. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:54, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's a bother. Why make everything so obscure?
Also, how can I change to the old layout? I don't know the name of whatever I was using before. To me, Wikipedia has become unreadable. Please give me some clues for getting the old format back. Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 23:46, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's something you'll have to ask WMF members, some of whom are keeping an eye out at Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022. If you want to go back to the old skin, you can go to Preferences → Appearance → Skins → Tick Vector legacy (2010). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:51, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
