Welcome to the Wikiproject Geography, a project to better organize information in articles related to Geography. This page and all subpages of this page contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please make suggestions and proposals on the talk page, and see the to-do list below:
General reference[edit]For the scope of country (political division) coverage, see List of sovereign states. Notice Board[edit]
Solicitations of comments on RfC's[edit]A Request for Comment (WP:RfC) was posted Sunday, 17 July 2011 at the Talk page of South Sudan. It concerns the use of the definite article ("the") citations in the InfoBox and elsewhere of what the long form is of the country's name. It is my hope to have responses from academically aware editors devoted to Africa, geography, coutries, and British English. Hurmata (talk) 23:32, 17 July 2011 (UTC) A Request for Comment was posted Thursday, 19 July 2012 at the Talk page of Wikipedia:Notability (geographical features). It requests suggestions on how to include consensus on which geographical features are non-notable in a draft policy proposal. G. C. Hood (talk) 16:48, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Scope[edit]Improves geographical related articles (including those related to geographic information systems) and develop/maintain the navigation aides dedicated to geography: List of basic geography topics, List of geography topics, Glossary of geography terms, Geography-related portals and Geography-related categories. Goals[edit]
The entire subject and Wikipedia's coverage of it is intended to be summarized in the Outline of geography and its branch outlines. These are in turn is part of Wikipedia's outline system which is one of Wikipedia's main contents systems. Please look it over and fill-in missing topics. If Wikipedia has an article or article section about those topics, please add links to them. While analyzing the outline, please answer the following questions (and fix the outline as needed):
The overall purpose of the outline is to help readers comprehend the subject by showing what belongs to it, and within the subject what belongs to what. The outline is a taxonomy of the subject, and also serves as a table of contents and navigation aid to browse Wikipedia's articles (and article sections) about the subject. It is also a useful tool for the WikiProject to analyze, plan, develop, and revise geography-related material. It is a hub from which to organize geographical topics. It was built as a "reverse outline", a structural model of an existing work, which in addition to being a summary of the work, can reveal the gaps and other weaknesses for revision purposes. Please help improve it. It's our bird's eye view. Thank you. Article structure[edit]A general template/model of how geography articles should be structured, and particularly what sections and in what order, doesn't seem to exist yet. The most common models are however summarised in some related WikiProjects; some examples follow and can be used as inspiration until a guideline is developed.

Review and assessment[edit]Traveling virtually around the World on Wikipedia via country outlines[edit]Develop the geographical outlines at Portal:Contents/Outlines#Geography and places. These should be considered top priority for development and maintenance, because they are the general reference resource about Wikipedia's coverage of each geographical region. Developing and maintaining the "list of basic geography topics"[edit]The list of basic geography topics is a general overview of geography. It is part of Lists of basic topics (the members of which share a common format), and is thus part of Wikipedia's table of contents system. It is incomplete and needs to be finished. The list also needs dedicated editors to watchlist it, to counter vandalism and to monitor its development. Finally, it needs to be maintained, to reflect changes on the presentation of the subject on Wikipedia (adding links to new relevant topics, updating links, etc.). Most importantly, since it outlines geography and is a key navigation aid for browsing geography topics on Wikipedia, the WikiProject Geography is the perfect caretaker for this page. Please adopt it, improve it and treat it with tender loving care. Articles needing attention[edit]A list of articles needing cleanup associated with this project is available. See also the tool's wiki page and the index of WikiProjects.
Requests for comments on pages[edit]This section is for short notifications of pages with problems, or where some attention is needed. If you list a page here, put a longer description on the pages talk page.
Requests for review of articles[edit]This section is for notifications of pages which wish to be graded as a Good Article or would like support to be a Featured Article. If you list a page here, put a longer description on the pages talk page. Additionally, leave a copy of the longer description under the article name on the /General page.
Adopt an article[edit]Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
