Administrators' newsletter – November 2023
News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2023).
Interface administrator changes
- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. Feedback on this proposal is requested.
- Eligible editors are invited to self-nominate themselves from 12 November 2023 until 21 November 2023 to stand in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections.
- Xaosflux, RoySmith and Cyberpower678 have been appointed to the Electoral Commission for the 2023 Arbitration Committee Elections. BusterD is the reserve commissioner.
- Following a motion, the contentious topic designation of Prem Rawat has been struck. Actions previously taken using this contentious topic designation are still in force.
- Following several motions, multiple topic areas are no longer designated as a contentious topic. These contentious topic designations were from the Editor conduct in e-cigs articles, Liancourt Rocks, Longevity, Medicine, September 11 conspiracy theories, and Shakespeare authorship question cases.
- Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
- Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
- An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.
- The Articles for Creation backlog drive is happening in November 2023, with 700+ drafts pending reviews for in the last 4 months or so. In addition to the AfC participants, all administrators and New Page Patrollers can conduct reviews using the helper script, Yet Another AFC Helper Script, which can be enabled in the Gadgets settings. Orphaned non-free image File:Ajax High School Logo.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Ajax High School Logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:10, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Image copyvios
Hi Whpq, an ongoing series of images has been uploaded to en:wp by User:Danielg532 with copyright violations on each. These images were then automatically cross-loaded to Commons, where there seems to be little appetite for their immediate deletion despite the potential liability that the WMF may incur as a result.
As en:wp is a separate project from Commons and the uploads originate from here, is there anything we can do locally to prevent further abuse of the copyright policies? Loopy30 (talk) 23:36, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Repeated violation of copyright policy (or any other policy) results in blocks. -- Whpq (talk) 00:07, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, and another admin has weighed in on Commons and deleted them all now. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 02:12, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Looking at your Commons report, the person who first responded to your post is not a Commons admin. -- Whpq (talk) 03:02, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm, that might explain why the response was not what I had expected on a "Administrators Needed" help page. Loopy30 (talk) 12:30, 18 November 2023 (UTC).
- Looking at your Commons report, the person who first responded to your post is not a Commons admin. -- Whpq (talk) 03:02, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

COPYVIO by a new user
Hi, it is regarding re-addition of the same content by the new user here, after you revdelled it [1]. I've reverted it again [2] and put a revdel tag [3]. I've also warned him. Please see. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:32, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I see another admin has already applied the revdel. I've added a message tot he user's talk page to supplement your warning. I hope that stops the copying. -- Whpq (talk) 14:38, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Delete of draft page
Hi, I notice that the draft page "You Yang" has been deleted by you as I used the same introduction with another webpage. I am sorry that I though the draft page is only a draft and it will not be published unless I decided to publish it. Thank you for letting me know this is not OK, I will rewrite the inrto and make sure it is not the same with any other resources. Yanjia00 (talk) 06:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- The copyright policy applies everywhere on Wikipedia, so you need to write the article in your own words even for in-progress work like a draft. Note that copying text and modifying it results in a derivative work, and would still be a copyright violation so it is not a good idea to paste in source material as a starting point. -- Whpq (talk) 12:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Red Charcoal
Hi
I have read both of your messages and I have written reasons why the Red Charcoal page should remain on the Red Charcoal Talk page SilhouetteCastle (talk) 02:00, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- Violating copyright policy means it cannot stay. I've left a message on your talk page with further information. -- Whpq (talk) 03:10, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- I do not believe that a copyright was violated for reasons I mentioned before and I believe that the 'Red Charcoal' page was removed prematurely. I also edited the page but it was removed premature before the edits were shown.
- How do I request to re-add the article with the edits that show no resemblance to any other article? SilhouetteCastle (talk) 10:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Caroline Karason
I believe that this article is neutral, factual and heavily sources. The sources are reliable and independent and the subject is 'notable' as agreed by another Wikipedia editor, 'Significa liberdade (she/her)'.
So please highlight which parts are not sourced well or are not factual SilhouetteCastle (talk) 10:27, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- The discussion on whether the article should be on Wikipedia is happening at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Caroline Karason and not my talk page. -- Whpq (talk) 13:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2023
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2023).
- Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.
- Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
- The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

Deletion of Holbein tube image
Hi there,
Is it possible to appeal the deletion of this image File:Holbein-tube.png? It's nigh impossible to recreate given the repainting of the skull area, and it's necessary to understand the compositional issues described on the page (a picture of the skull focused does not suffice, his argument is about the arrangement of the objects also). Jim Killock (talk) 07:54, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, you can appeal the deletion. Step 1 is to contact the deleting admin which you are doing right now. You will need to convince me that the image cannot be replaced in any way. The position you laid out in disputing the speedy deletion did not convince me. Why can't a blow up be used? What is the difficulty in doing the calcuations. And why isn;t File:Demonstration of Holbein's skull image viewed through a tube.jpg sufficient? -- Whpq (talk) 12:14, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there, thank you.
- Some of this is set out in the article. In particular, there is an alignment of the two globes and the skull image. To see this, you need to see the whole picture, not just the skull through a tube. There is also the comparison of the three heads (two figures plus skull) in the sketch composition and the three heads (two figures plus skull) in the Ambassadors.
- Regarding recreation of the image: the skull image was repainted ("restored")in 1996-7, meaning that the appearance of the skull is different to when the image was originally taken. This may affect the nose, jaw line, left shadow and right side of the skull. The change of the appearance of the skull was noted and controversial, and is discussed in the article. One scholar notes that the application of a tube view should still work, but of course, it will look different and potentially less convincing than the 1960s version.
- On calculations, I don't have the expertise to work it out, but I am trying by trial and error by purchasing various tubes and rods, plastic and glass.
- A 1960s version of the picture could be found, but I have only found small reproductions, of around 7 inches. we don't know yet how well these will perform. However, the smaller the picture is, the smaller the focusing image in the glass, meaning the smaller the result on any photograph taken. I am guessing the skull image may need to be 3-5mm wide to compose correctly; in the version used, the skull would have been photographed at 25mm wide approximately. This might be adequate, but it is more likely in my opinion to be sub standard. Until we are able to try, we don't know.
- Finding the right optic is proving non-trivial at full size also. The perspex tubes work, but are poor optically (blurred, fuzzy). The dimensions required at full size (2m by 2m) is a 25mm wide glass tube at 3mm width thickness. These are not readily available except to manufacturers. I am inquiring with manufacturers to see if I can get a single optic.
- The policy is that images that "cannot" be reproduced are allowed, if they meet other general fair use criteria, in this case, educational use and criticism and review. At this point, it is certainly non-trivial, but we don't know whether we can or cannot. Given that our mission is to disseminate knowledge, it seems reasonable to err on the side of dissemination, until we know the image can be reproduced adequately. Jim Killock (talk) 12:43, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- @JimKillock and Marchjuly:I think there is enough here that there should be a discussion instead of just speedy deletion. As such, I've restored the image, and listed it at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2024 January 17#File:Holbein-tube.png. Please provide your comments there about whether the image should be kept or removed. -- Whpq (talk) 03:03, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

About your CSD U5 decline
Hey Whpq, I noticed you declined to delete User:VASTU ENGINEER/sandbox, and I wanted to clarify why I nominated it. Judging by the creator's username, the social media links at the bottom of the draft, the selfie used in the infobox, and the fact that they have made no other contributions, I think this is a clear case of unencyclopedic self-promotion in violation of WP:NOTPROMOTION. Maybe I could've been more clear in this case by using CSD G11 instead of CSD U5. Anyways, would you reconsider your decision? —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 15:23, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Deletion of Dog show temporary poster image
Hi there,
- Hello Whpq, thanks for your message and good morning to you from hereat Philippines; I took the photo for souvenir since this the Asia's biggest Dog show and Philippines may not have it again until 10 to 15 years in the future; I should have not put it in commons; also perhaps not in Wikipedia; the Poster is just temporary and has been removed after I took picture there since that was the last day of the 5 day, the Championship finals; I have no objection to the deletion;
- I am not so familiar with Commons reply to discussions, and my mentor regarding how to reply, is absent hence, with all due respect, I chose to reply to your talk page instead in Commons talk page or in the it the nomination page Discussion page of Commons; Deletion requests File:The Philippine Circuit Show2.jpg this Poster respectfully submitted and very sincerely yours Valenzuela400 (talk) 04:24, 24 January 2024 (UTC).
- My Commons talk page would have been the better place for a replay, but here will do. If you have no objections to deleting the image, you can request its deletion directly by adding {{Db-author}} to the file description on Commons. That template basically says that you, as the author of the image, are requesting it be deleted. -- Whpq (talk) 04:32, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Done, and thanks so much for the info on proper procedure, very sincerely Valenzuela400 (talk) 06:08, 24 January 2024 (UTC).

Restore Mohabbat Karna Mana Hai
Hey there, Hope you are doing great. I wanted to create the subject mentioned (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Mohabbat_Karna_Mana_Hai) but since it has been created before if you can restore it, my time will be saved as it was a well written article with adequate reliable sources. Reason for declination
Hi, I am ExclsuiveEditor. I noticed that you recently declined CSD of Colors Marathi Cinema I nominated on 12 Feb., with reason 'no valid speedy deletion criteria specified', although I have specified it as 'Sole basis of creation is rumors of launch of a TV channel for unreliable websites. After 3 years, neither any channel of the name, nor any source has been launched'.
- If you are not convinced then 3 years ago rumors of launch of a TV channel of such name was proposed by unreliable sources. After the years, we can confirm that they were rumors and not even a single source (reliable/ unreliable) even speculates any such Channel now.
- Also the said page was created by a blocked sock puppeteer (although that is not the criterion, but the master was known for promotional editing). Regards, ExclusiveEditor Notify Me! 11:00, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Speedy deletions must meet one of the WP:criteria for speedy deletion. You request does not meet any of the criteria. AS for the sockpuppetry, the redirect predates the sockpuppetry, and in any case, you did not tag it for that. If you think the redirect should be deleted, you should nominate it for deletion at redirects for discussion. -- Whpq (talk) 12:50, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Overall, that article is just not fit for CSD then, but still could be discussed for deletion. If yes, okay. Thank You. (Also a small thing, you didn't notify me, as you mentioned above on you talk page, but its okay.) ExclusiveEditor Notify Me! 13:20, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- @ExclusiveEditor: - Sorry about not pinging you. I was relying on the "reply" option to ping you. It is supposed to provide a notification when used. I guess it didn't work. -- Whpq (talk) 13:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi I believe you just remove my edit. I am new to editing WIKI but I did present a keynote address on this subject in 1999 at the ASIS( american society of information science) meeting which is part of their proceedings. It presented an interesting viewpoint of this subject at that time when many information management system were trying to relabel their products knowledge management systems. I am seeing this repeated in many of the AI products. Thanks for any consideration Tom DigitalVirtualTom (talk) 21:31, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello there, Query
Hello Whpq, Hope you are doing great. I am new to editing-replying to discussions on images on WIKI. Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2024 February 17: First, User sent me messages on my talk page, 7 images on Garden of Peace Memorial Park. I notice that the statues have so many cracks and maybe 80% dangerous sooner. I am not in a position to discuss the matters since my line of profession is on consultancy on Information Technology, Cyber and Hacking Philippine problems, having been a law professor of a University. May I ask if I can just put a speedy deletion thereat like Db-author, as I await your reply, being a sycop, on the merits of the deletion or non-deletion thereof; Second, this birds photo, is not a sculpture but a statue fabricated by us; I own a garden figurine shop and I use machine shop to make moulds or "hulmahan" like Last where the cement-sand mixture is poured with steel reinforcement and the result is bird figurine; here, Eastern great egret or Ardea alba modesta figurines, plenty nearby hereat (In memoriam for our beloved departed who perished due to severe depression, failed anger management especially vindictiveness, following and mental illnesses); however the installation was done by masonry of the Cemetery. I might be suspected of advertising for the Cemetery my own work, hence I await you kind checking if I can just put Db-author; third, the same reasoning with the photo and bird on pole; however, firefly float has an inbound link used in Firefly (2023 film) which won the best picture in the Philippines; and additionally Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2024 February 18
- Finally, it pains me so much to be accused as a sock; I am a very private person, since, I was asked or suggested by my students, now Officers of Valenzuela City and some retired Officers of the Philippine Government to contribute for our Coffee Table Book on its 400th Anniversary year long celebration. More than 20 top officers rejected and ignored our Groups's invitation to join and contribute to Wikipedia on photos hence I and only myself agreed with reluctance. I was told in advance about the Blocking policy and edit wars thereat by anonymous sycops. These might deter me, but I was advised to do my best and they will take care of the rest. Valenzuela400 at enwiki as potential JF Sock Sock? Please kindly check on these matters, in your free time. very sincerely yours Valenzuela400 (talk) 08:41, 18 February 2024 (UTC).

WPL logos
The close of Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2024 February 26#File:Tata WPL Logo.webp does not fix the issues highlighted. There are still 2 logos, where only 1 should be used, and generic logos being used in season articles in violation of WP:GETTY point 14. Please can you reopen this FFD or adequately address these concerns. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:21, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for reaching out to me. I understand that those files have issues, but they were not nominated for FFD so taking any action to remove them as part of FFD would not be proper. You can boldly remove them from the articles if they are obviously in violation of policy, or nominate them at FFD. I understand Wikipedia is not a bureaucracy, but deletion is one of those times where being more strict matters. -- Whpq (talk) 14:59, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- The convert of File:Tata WPL Logo.webp to non free that was done during the FFD discussion was incorrect, as it violates WP:GETTY point 14. As I pointed out at that discussion (comment dated 5:28 pm, 27 February 2024). Letting someone convert images from one incorrect template to a different incorrect template is unacceptable. Thus, the close was wrong to consider this an acceptable outcome, rather than deleting as invalid fair use. Joseph2302 (talk) 20:11, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- You are right. I messed up on my reading through that. I've reverted my close and relisted. Sorry for the screwup. -- Whpq (talk) 01:13, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

User:Aisha Saleh Fantai/sandbox
Of course drafts are a valid use for a sandbox. But we don't approve of self promotional resumes anywhere on Wikipedia:
As a youth activist and writer, he writes a lot on literature, politics, social development, language, and many more. His activism is becoming stronger, and one of his wishes is to partner with any non-governmental organisations, government, and individuals to initiate a programme that will curb unemployment, drug abuse, community violence, thuggery, insecurity, and other societal menaces bedevilling people around the globe so as to have prosperous, sound, and healthy environments all over the world.
Amir has come across a number of prominent and influential politicians (locals and nationals), intellectuals, diplomats, historians, and many leaders in Nigeria and other countries in the world, especially when he was doing his internship at the National Assembly sponsored by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) with the support from the European Union (EU) in Nigeria. Some of his engagements and encounters include the past and present governors, senators, chairmen, party elders, and other notable people such as Sule Lamido, Badaru Abubakar, Ibrahim Hassan, Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Isah Ali Ibrahim Pantami, and Kashim Shettima. 2601:19E:4180:6D50:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 01:43, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- It's not a resume. It's a badly written draft. Yes it is promotional, but borderline on TNT. -- Whpq (talk) 02:14, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
Invitation to participate in Wikipedia study
Hello, I have been contacting editors with experience in specific areas of editing to participate in a survey study. In order to limit access without forcing editors to disclose their identity in the survey form itself, I have been contacting them via email, which you have disabled for your account. If you would like to participate, please send me an email through Wikipedia and I will follow up with additional details and a link to the survey. Jonathan Engel (researcher) (talk) 13:33, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
- I have enabled email. You can now send me the email. -- Whpq (talk) 14:42, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

Ambarish Anand: Draft
Dear Wikipedia Editor,
I am writing to contest the proposed deletion of the draft concerning Ambarish Anand. The draft provides a factual and unbiased overview of Ambarish Anand's professional journey, accomplishments, and contributions in the fields of IT services and digital transformation.
The content is well-researched, sourced, and verified, in accordance with Wikipedia's guidelines for encyclopedic information. It offers valuable insights into the career and impact of an influential figure in the IT industry, without any promotional or biased language.
Removing this draft would withhold essential information from readers about a significant individual in the IT landscape. I believe the draft adheres to Wikipedia's standards and adds value to the platform by enhancing its knowledge repository. If there i anything specifc you want me to update, pls guide me and i will do it.
I kindly request a comprehensive review of the draft based on Wikipedia's guidelines and criteria.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Ambarish2anand (talk) 09:48, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- I've reviewed the deleted draft. It is pure, 100% promotional to the point where it would need to be completely rewritten. It was deleted appropriately under speedy deletion criterion G11. This is not just my opinion. It is also the opinion of two other administrators who also deleted the draft for the same reason. -- Whpq (talk) 12:29, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
Cyndee Landrum page
This page was recently deleted due to copyright infringement of the source of the information. It is correct that the article cited was the same copy as the entry. The inclusion of that link was a mistake. The link was meant to come from the agency's press release, which was copied by the source originally cited erroneously. Can we reinstate the page with a new link to: https://www.imls.gov/news/institute-museum-and-library-services-announces-acting-director

- I've left a message on your talk page. Make sure you read it. I suggest you create a draft and put it through Articles for Creation. Copying a press release is not a good idea. -- Whpq (talk) 18:33, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Burumas depicted in historical photographs
I added an historical photo of Yuko Mitsuya from 1976 to the article. Thank you for your guidance. TreeElf (talk) 05:10, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
Unpaid
Sir I didn't paid by any one but I am always interested in contribution to Wikipedia most especially the article from northern Nigeria. Bamalli01 (talk) 14:56, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
Humble petition to revoke deletion of "Daniel Jeddman"
I honestly didn't see that coming due to the fact that I took my time to just contribute to this article associated to the mentioned name above. Just like I usually do to other articles I dim fit, I researched on Google if there were other credible information attributed to him. I honestly didn't know it infrings a copyright on Wikipedia.
I would kindly ask sincerely to be given the opportunity to remove that citation that might have caused this deletion. I'm still on my way to learn more as a user on Wikipedia. When allowed on draft, I will take my time to get the right things done.
Thank you so much for your consideration. I really appreciate @Whpq Blackan007 (talk) 21:25, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- Copyright violations are not restored. You can start a new draft writing it in your own words. -- Whpq (talk) 21:42, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
