WikiCup 2010 June newsletter
We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) Casliber (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.
If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn, Fox and The ed17

- Missed by ten points with an article at GAN and another at FAC! Oh well. Think of England and its football team ...--Wehwalt (talk) 16:06, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Wow. I beat out you.... (I would have reviewed your GAN if you just asked!) As for me, I doubt that I'll advance to the finals.--White Shadows There goes another day 16:08, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Well, congrats on that. I tend to stick with my usual writing patterns, and if it isn't good enough for the Cup, it's good enough for me.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:11, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the offer, but I think you were away most of the time it's been up.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:13, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- True. I try to not let the cup run how I edit. I use it as a motivator to write instead of useing it as a race. Do you get what I mean?--White Shadows There goes another day 17:15, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, an incentive because it's cool to advance (winning will take major effort at a time of year when you have other things to do), the achievement is nice, and you don't have to worry about real life consequences if you don't make it or choose to deemphasizing, it will not set you back in the zomg cutthroat competition for the various brass rings which are par for the course at this stage of your life (that's a mixed metaphor, by the way, very much so).--Wehwalt (talk) 17:26, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Exactly, winning, (or beating out 130 others as I have done so far) is just a bonus. What with school comming in the next two months and my own Personal life, I doubt that I'm going to get any farther but I'm still shocked in a way since many people wrote me off in round 1. (I myself thought that I would be one of the 60 eliminated at the end of round 1 who got 0 points) just getting this far was a prize enough for me.--White Shadows There goes another day 17:30, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Enjoy the sunshine! :) Sorry I'm asking you this so late (I forgot about this), but has an admin emailed you a copy of Wiki, The musical yet? It doesn't look like anyone's responded to your request. If no one has emailed you a copy and you still want one, I'll ask an admin to email one to you. Cheers, --Meaghan happy canada day ≈ 17:23, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

A thought
Why don't you come and pester me when you want your submarines moved to mainspace and I'll do it without leaving the redirect behind, which should reduce some of the confusion. Btw, which song is your new sig from? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:51, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah that would be better.... It would keep people from makeing comments like "It's three months old so it cannot go on the main page" even though the rules (in a blury kind of way) state otherwise. To answer your question I'll come ping you or Wehwalt when I want to get my pages moved. (But don't delete the sandbox if you can) As for the song, try takeing a look at this the first pice of music that you hear is the end of a live version of the song who's lyrics are in my sig, it's called "So Sad" and was one of the first 10 CP songs written, only 13 seconds of a live version have ever been released and those 13 seonds contain only two lines (includeing the line "There goes another day") It's a shame that the song will never see the light of day.--White Shadows There goes another day 19:00, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Well the confusion seems to be partly caused by your sandbox recycling methods. If you let me move it without a redirect, the history stays with the new article but your sandbox is effectively deleted, but you can just re-create it with your next project. It's funny, I've never written an article in my userspace. For some reason I've always just started in the mainspace. I probably should draft Nick Parker-type total overhauls in my userspace, but hey, that's what {{underconstruction}} is for! I suppose you have the luxury of time by doing it in your userspace, though. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:17, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- You've got that right!--White Shadows There goes another day 20:53, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

- Hmm, I'd certainly be interested in being a nom - if you are ready, that is. I think I'll have a chat with Wehwalt to see what he thinks of your growth over the past few months. ceranthor 18:23, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Be my guest. If you guys think that I'm ready, I'll happily accept a nom :) Perhaps I can be of more assistance over at WT:DYK with the tools...--White Shadows There goes another day 18:26, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- I can't say whether I would support without doing a little digging, but I can assure you that I've been impressed by how quickly you have matured, and the massive contribution you're now making to Wikipedia. J Milburn (talk) 18:31, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Alright, I've just emailed Wehwalt. We'll see what he says. So, when do we get to work on the submarine article? I fervently apologize for the past few months; I've come to be selfish and focus on dumb things like work and my own "articles". Hopefully you still have it in you to want to work on it. :) ceranthor 18:32, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think the odds are in your favor, if not tremendously so, and that youth and inexperience (in some people's eyes) are what would be brought up. Perhaps they'd dig up some of your less wise statements from the start of the year. If you feel comfortable going, then go! If you fail (and I don't think it would be an epic fail, as you say these days), you'd be setting up a successful second run at the end of the year. Happy to conom if Cerenthor wants to nom, or vice versa. Either way.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:38, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

- Interesting. Too many chefs risk spoiling the brew, but I'd be happy to add a con-nom if there were a vacancy. The one thing I will add to what we discussed by email is that RfA is tough and it can be stressful and you'd need to keep your cool, even if you feel people are treating you unfairly (which is not unlikely)- just telling you so you'll have some idea of what to expect. I think, given the level of experience in this thread, between all of us, we should be able to come up with a strong nomination dealing with your strengths and a good "acceptance speech" from you acknowledging your weaknesses (your block log, inter alia, will inevitably come up) should put you on a strong footing. Exactly how it would go after that I honestly don't know. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:34, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- I agree, it can be incredibly stressful. I well remember waking up at 4 am and going to the computer to spend the last two hours of my RfA hitting "refresh". Basically, in an RfA, if there is trouble, you must defuse it even if you think it is unfair or unwarranted. Keep your eyes on the prize and don't be hasty to respond. Feel free to ask for advise, off wiki if need be. You have support, use it. We've all been here longer than you. Use us as resources and listen to our advice, then make your own decisions.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- I looked at yours, if you think that's stressful, you should try 2010's RfA! I have. Twice! :S Wehwalt makes a good point, though- you're always welcome to flick off an email to either or both of us, either to vent or to seek advice. If you pass, the same applies- you've got 4 more experienced admins (though, in my case, only just!) just in this thread and, I for one, would be more than happy to lend a hand, so you should just take things slow and start working in the areas you know best rather than risk biting off more than you can chew. Oh, and if it's successful, keep WP:OWB#37 and 42 in mind! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:34, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- December 2008 is good enough for me. Especially since the last few hours saw me slipping under 80 percent. Anyway, if you do plan to run, watch your contributions very closely from here on in. Glancing at Malleus's concern, I would suggest from here on in, don't even mention one user on another user's talk page unless you are utterly sure they would not mind what you said.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:39, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

- That's just about the best laugh I've had all day. I'm being hounded by ex-admin Herostratus, but that's OK, because he was an administrator who might be a little bit upset because he's been desysopped. Give me a break, we all know how it works. Malleus Fatuorum 22:58, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

- First off, thanks everyone :) @Malleus, if that hurt your feelings then I apologize. I honestly did not mean that in a "grudge carrying way" and to be honest, I would not like your personality to change, you were the one who pestered me enough to actually "prove you wrong" in a sense and actually get to writing. That has earned you an imminence amount to respect from me (that that it really means anything coming from a teenager!) @Ceranthor, I would love to get to work on UB I if that's ok with you :) I've been looking forward to this article for a while. I feel like that whoever I'd pick would, I'd be letting the other down. All three of you have been really helpful to me in the past months.--White Shadows There goes another day 21:10, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

You probably don't expect to see this here after the comments I made in your RFA, but I just wanted to:
- Congratulate you for your composure at a difficult time
- Apologise for anything that I said which may have offended you
- Encourage you to keep improving and try again later
- Offer my help in the (very unlikely) event you might feel you ever need it
I'm particularly impressed that you never tried to hide your past. I think that does you enormous credit, and will benefit you in the long run.
Anyway, I'll bugger off now, since I have no doubt you have better things to do than read this crap.

DYK for German submarine U-109 (1940)
On July 7, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article German submarine U-109 (1940), which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Congratulations
...on coming through RfA, and a rough one at that, with composure and a willingness to learn. I respect that a great deal and believe it shows a tremendous amount of maturity on your part. As one who !voted neutral, I would like to stress that I did not in any way disapprove of you as a user. Something I found is stressed at Simple and probably should be here is that adminship is about trust. That was, I believe, the main issue here. I do hope you will continue your terrific work and run again when you feel that most of the issues have been taken care of. I look forward to supporting. - I'd just like to add, what a wonderful opening, and I agree with every word (as I tried to say above) . You'll be a good admin, and I'm sorry I had to oppose you this time - Begoon (talk) 17:03, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- No problems. I'll try to work on writing (and not a minimum set of GAs or DYKs) rather than "jumping in feet first". When I run again, I will make sure that all of my issues that have been brought up in RFA #1 will be addressed. Thanks for commenting :)--White Shadows There goes another day 17:17, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

If this [2] is how you are going to act, I wouldn't go for that second RFA anytime soon. I'm sure I don't have to remind you of WP:NPA since you've been blocked for it before. - You're the Dylan620 of 2010, dude, and I mean seriously: You had a rough start, like I did. You turned around, like I did. You didn't make it through RfA, like I didn't. But I know you're more capable of the mop than I am - you're a better writer and you're more focused, for starters. I seem to have the attention span of a rock. :/ Basically, you're going down a path not dissimilar to mine, only you're going farther down it than I did. Good luck, buddy, and as Dexter Holland once said: "You're gonna go far, kid."
And on a secondary note, I lol'd quite hard at your exchange with Beeblebrox above. ;) --Dylan620 (contribs, logs) 21:55, 7 July 2010 (UTC)- Rocks have pretty good attention spans. I've known some to concentrate so hard they don't move for hours even.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:04, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry it didn't work out, WS. I think you gave great answers to the questions, even though Q6 was a really tough one. - (edit conflict) My point is that these editors are not omniscient; it depends on what you do in the future, which they can't predict, and neither can you. The "I'll support in X months" cant is just that, meaningless cant. Try again when you know that you're ready. Malleus Fatuorum 23:56, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

- I don't want to cause offence, but you would do well to demonstrate that you know that adminship is no just a rite of passage for editors who have X many edits in Y many months but just a few extra buttons which, while very shiny, are really quite boring, never mind the trolling it attracts- you saw that 4chan shit on my talk page, for example. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:04, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I know that it is not a rite of passage but how can I go about doing that?--White Shadows There goes another day 00:16, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Just focus on enjoying what you do and improving the encyclopaedia rather than worrying about admiship. If it happens that you would have a real use for the tools towards the end of the year, then you might start thinking about another RfA, but for now, just put it out of your mind. As I've said before, feel free to come and bug me if you need something done at DYK that needs a mop. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:15, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll take that in mind.--White Shadows There goes another day 00:16, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- FWIW, being here should be about what you want to do, and what makes you happy. If you really believe in your heart of hearts that the only thing that will make you happy is achieving adminship, then do what you believe is necessary to earn trust and support. On the other hand, you could simply continue doing what you've been doing, be yourself, enjoy yourself, without putting yourself in a position where you think your every move will be watched. Had I known this would happen so fast I would have advised you to wait. Today I was working on an article, and by the time I was done the RfA was closed. I think closing quickly was wise, and I think you're taking this well, because I'm sure it was a disappointment. Be yourself - and be happy. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 00:36, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

- Echoing others above, I commend your composure throughout your RFA. It's not easy (I know from experience). The comments made by PrincessofLlyr, HJ Mitchell, and Truthkeeper88 here especially stood out to me. Do what you like to do. Otherwise, I'd consider Wikipedia a huge waste of time. - Really - just stop thinking about adminship for the forseeable future. Your nominators did you no favours in putting you forward and most Opposers went out of their way to be kind and positive given the impression you've made and the prospect of you with the tools. Those who chase adminship as a gong or as some mechanism for self-fulfillment invariably - and rightly - come to grief. You've made good progress on articles - likewise forget the "there, that's enough, now whre's my badge" GA-chasing and concentrate on writing good copy on the details of stuff that really interests you. BTW, my old man just gave me a pile of good books on submarines, WW2, etc. I'll check out what you're working on and see if I can pass on some prime non-Google info and sources. Plutonium27 (talk) 23:47, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not chaseing anything and I'm not thinking of GA's a a competiton. Otherwise I'd be writeing on overdrive. I have a life outside of Wikipedia you know! Trust me, I only whent for it because I thought that I could be of more use at DYK ect. (Hense the limited admin related areas) Thanks for the offer on the submarines though ;)--White Shadows I ran away from you 23:56, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- A general rule of verbs (doing words) ending in "e" eg. make, write, chase, etc - is that when they get the "ing" ending, you drop the "e" eg. making, writing, chasing. Please, even if you can't get Firefox to sort all this out for you automatically, then try to grasp the basic rule that most of us had mastered by our nation's equivalent of 4th grade. Check also when a "w" has an "h" following and when it doesn't. Went doesn't, when does. Weenie doesn't, whining does. Why does, woman doesn't. There's no easy rule there- its called reading and remembering. Please - for the 1000th-seeming time of asking - sort your spelling out. Plutonium27 (talk) 16:39, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- OK I have firefox on and I'll be using it from now on so hopefully you will no longer see any spelling errors from me. (Though calling my spelling worse than a 4th grader really was not needed)--White Shadows I ran away from you 16:46, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- In the local slum-serving London primary school I went to (ages 8-11), we were expected to know to drop the "e" after the consonant on verbs ending in "ing" by the beginning of our second year there (= your US 4th grade). Calling your spelling 4th grade is both accurate and needed, White Shadows, because it is that bad. That is why you get nagged about it - because of your failure to comprehend and correct these persistent, basic mistakes. Sort it out but understand why people got pissed it took you so long. Plutonium27 (talk) 17:07, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think you've made your point, Plut. Sometimes being blunt can be effective, but once you've made your point, you don't need to keep hammering it home- that's the distinction between being frank and just being rude for the sake of it. WS, you could try Google Chrome if you wanted- it has a spell checker, but I find it quicker and nicer to use than Firefox. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:14, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- A comprehensive knowledge of this user's habits and communiques shows that hammering it home, time and again, is regrettably but precisely exactly what it takes to make the necessary points sink in and stick. It is the only proven course of input that got WS out of the trap of his juvenile fuckupery - as he has acknowledged time and agin viz. the input from Malleus. It may be way more blunt than suits your personal WP:political sensitivities, HJ, but calling it rude is nothing more than your white-knighting proclivities getting butthurt because you were instrumental in getting WS clobbered in the RfA by joining in his teenage cheerleading squad. Plutonium27 (talk) 18:02, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

DYK for German submarine U-27 (1936)
On July 7, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article German submarine U-27 (1936), which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

- Also you can use lots of monobook.js scripts in Firefox too, a lot of which can't be used, or aren't actively supported in IE. If I'm not mistaken, WP:Twinkle is one of them. And, IMHO, it just looks better. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 04:03, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Ping!
You have mail. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:13, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm hiding this message here so others will not see it. I am not sure what to do about U-28. It is very interesting. However, some may say that it is too short because it doesn't cover the ship that well. The patrols are covered but actual information on the ship is one large paragraph. I don't want to call it a "fail" but maybe someone else can review it. If there is another category, like "I like it", then it passes! RIPGC (talk) 04:42, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- It seems to cover the ship perfectly fine. There is a nice lead (though it could use a bit of expansion) and it also covers the technical side of the U-boat as well as giving info on every patrol.--White Shadows There goes another day 15:48, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- Please be responsible and do that lead expansion in July. Please don't forget! This will make it a definite GA. Please don't make a fool of me if you don't improve it and someone successfully challenges the GA. Congratulations. RIPGC (talk) 05:06, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Do you think Rafa42 (talk · contribs) is a Guitarherochristopher sock? ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐ • ✍) 01:36, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Could you have another look?
Hey, can you take another look at this DYK nom? You verified it, then it turned out there were some copyvio issues from the AfC submission which were removed, taking it below 1500 characters but I've expanded it so could you take a look so it doesn't get lost in the sea of DYK noms? :) Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:25, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

I decided to remove the tag on the article Academy Fight Song in which you nominated for speedy deletion. However I brought it up to Articles for deletion for a consensus to be made. Minimac (talk) 06:11, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Rudyard Kipling (ship)
Hello! Your submission of Rudyard Kipling (ship) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! AngChenrui (talk) 13:51, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hi White Shadows, with regards to your DYK nomination of Rudyard Kipling (ship) here, can I confirm if you would like it to be moved to the April Fool's DYK nominations page, or kept for ordinary listing? You're the creator and nominator of the article, so the right ultimately is with you. Decide soon, the current nomination's running old! Good day ahead, AngChenrui (talk) 09:00, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, I just wanted to inform you I have moved it to the April Fool's DYK nominations page. You can see it there. Thank you very much, AngChenrui (talk) 10:55, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

I went ahead and added an alt for the DYK (see here to find the area where it is right now). Sorry it's still rather dull, but the game was kind of meddling and mediocre. Nomader (Talk) 17:27, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi! Thanks for yout offer of help. I think the best thing you could do help get this article up to FL status (and hence get Canadian elections back up to FT status) would be to follow the suggestions at User talk:Tompw#List of Nunavut general elections. - Thanks for yoru work on this article - it's definately improved. I've followed up on your suggestion by moving one of the noets into the lead. The rest of the notes are all relate to by-elections after MLAs stepped down or resigned. I'm begining to think we should have an article List of Nunavut by-elections, with links to that rather than notes.
- That sounds like a good idea. How much more do you think we need to add before it's ready for another FLC?--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 15:35, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Re:Question
This had already crossed my mind. You've shown a great commitment to the Cup, and have already been dealing with a lot of judgey things anyway. At this stage, I think I would be more than happy with this. There will have to be more discussion of the issue closer to the time, but, short answer, "yes". Lee
I think it is going to be a considerable project, but we have time to consider it while working on Liberty (I hope to start that shortly now that Tosca is safely deposited at FAC, but there is a long list of comments I need to work through on Ernest first). On Lee, I see you doing the writing (don't worry, I will go over it closely) the Civil War and Mexican war sections. I plan to conclude with a section tracing Lee's reputation and legacy, which I find has altered very much over the years, see by way of an example of what I have in mind here. I will work on that, as well as the other peacetime parts of the article.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:48, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- That's going to be one hard article to write that's for sure. I'm perfectly fine with writeing the Mexican and Civil War sections as I have tons of sources about Lee and the Civil War in general. (Though I'll have to take a few trips to the library/borders for some sources about the Mexican War) Once I return to Virginia in about a month, I'll get to work (since my sources are all over there)--White Shadows I ran away from you 14:39, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- No great hurry. I think it is hard, but well worth doing.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:42, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- True. I cannot wait to see this go on the main page one day....--White Shadows I ran away from you 14:44, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Next April, I'm thinking, would be several very good 150th anniversaries. Lee's resignation from the US Army, for example, or his commissioning to lead Virginia's forces. Or simply on the anniversary of Fort Sumter, although Lee had nothing to do with that, but it "started the Civil War". I'm thinking we can get this to FAC in October.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:49, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds good, that would give me enough time to get some more sources.--White Shadows I ran away from you 14:50, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- I bought a handful of books on Lee at a used bookstore I like, no bios, just discussing various aspects of him. There are many books about Lee, we need to take care not to have too many sources.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:54, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- True. I remember reading in this one interesting little fact book about the civil war that Lee has the second most amount of books published about any American (Washington is #1). The most basic thing to do would be to copy edit the article and then we could worry about the structure of the text (some sections seem out of place and some need writing ect.)--White Shadows I ran away from you 14:59, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, and if there are any talk page watchers, it will get them used to our presence.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:03, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oh yeah I forgot, there are bound to be people already working on it. Hopefully we can work peacefully with whoever they are.--White Shadows I ran away from you 15:05, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- I dropped a note on talk page a few days ago, no one responded, but there's been a brief discussion of Lee's class rank since then. Images should not be a problem either.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:12, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Well that's good to know. I am bit scared about writing an FA from an article in the current state as this. I don't know where to start. It seems to me like I'll have to gut entire sections and start from scratch....--White Shadows I ran away from you 15:14, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, but one at a time. It is important to keep articles in service as they are improved. If several hundred or thousand people a day are looking at it, they can't be too inconvenienced. Like, in theory, road reconstruction.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:17, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- OK. When we get to work on it, I'll slowly make the changes. I'm guessing that we'll take this to GAN first and then ACR/FAC next?--White Shadows I ran away from you 15:19, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Either that or peer review. I'm guessing that taking it for A class might be even harder than FAC because reviewers will be more likely to be strongly opinionated. Let's discuss that later.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:21, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Just to make sure you see it, the review is here. Parsecboy (talk) 15:28, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- I passed the article for GA, nice work. I thought I'd make a suggestion: you should try to get a scan of a line-drawing of the class that you can put in the infobox. You can upload it under fair use (like I did for Amagi class battlecruiser here). I think Conway's has a line-drawing you can use. Parsecboy (talk) 13:10, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Teeth
Make the fuck sure they put you out. There is no reason why you should have to suffer any pain or anxiety over this. I realize that others have a voice in your medical treatment, but speaking as one who has had three of his four wisdom teeth removed and also three teeth replaced with implants (one took four attempts before it stopped failing), that whole thing about the Spartan boy never uttering a cry while the wolf chewed on his vitals, or however it was? Obsolete. I've made it very clear to my dentist that I am allergic to pain and that I expect him to accommodate me. Life has enough pain in it that we can afford to leave out the unnecessary bits. That being said, good luck and I hope that your parents are not insisting on them being dug out with a dull spoon.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:37, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

I really wasn't completely aware of what I was saying and apparently I was very silly. The other times I had it (I haven't had it in around seven years) I was much more self aware. I don't know if it was the dosage or me getting adjusted to it in some way. I am sure people will insist, but you actually will want to take it easy and just go to bed after this. Hey, you might want to put a non-breaking space or two in your sig- I just saw your comment on Blue's talk page and the "I" in "I ran away from you" (on my screen, anyway) is on a separate line to the rest, which threw me for a minute! ;) Just a thought from a friendly talk page stalker! One thing you could do
Do you have references on French vessels? There is presently no article on the French frigate Isère, which transported the disassembled statue to the US, I'd like that to be a blue link. Can you write a brief article or tell me who in the MilHist wikiproject is the person to ask? Also, Ernest Augustus I of Hanover is now at FAC, if you have time to review it. Ironically, I also have a painful dentist's appointment on the 21st. they are doing the second half of a deep cleaning of my gums to eliminate tiny pockets of infection that could come back to bite me (ha ha) later. They will numb me but leave me conscious.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:12, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I've been here for a year now.....though I've only been of assistance for about 6 1/2 months :)--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 00:17, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- Happy Wikibirthday! How goes the fixing above? If it matters, I've had similar problems with your page title changing, random font colour changes, section edit links disappearing, but I assumed it was just me or some temporary glitch, so I didn't mention it. :)HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:26, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks and the same thing happened to me! I thought the same :)--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 00:30, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- How many idiots like us do you think have come to that conclusion? Btw, I changed your userbox in honour of your wikibirthday! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- I noticed, it;s on my watch list. Too bad I'll be having 4 wisdom teeth pulled on my Wikibirthday....--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 00:41, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- You're probably better off without them- wisdom teeth are a pain in the arse! Your page title just change to special:NewPages/1 again and all the section edit links vanished. You should probably get that fixed. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- I know but I don't know how....someone get me !X--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 01:21, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- I"m sorry guys but I'm going to take the next few more days off. These pain killers from that surgery made me throw up three times right next to the computer chair. (It's all cleaned up) I'll see you all later and Plut, believe it or not but I was not trying to gain attention through my 1 year wikibirthday. I'll see y'all around :)--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 00:30, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

- (*polite cough*) →WP:MYSPACE. Talk pages are for people to talk to you, about Wikipedia. —Sladen (talk) 08:58, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- (*polite cough*) → Oh. Oops. ;-)
- Seriously, is this post a real problem? WhiteShadows article edit count is typically higher in absolute terms than my article edit count. I see WP:MYSPACE as a problem when an "editor" is solely or largely using Wikipedia for social networking, and I do not believe that that's the case here. This isn't entirely directed at you, Sladen, so apologies if it comes off that way - it's partly in response to a post, now disappear-ed, that I noticed yesterday and didn't get a chance to respond to. - I rarely ever begin a thread on my talk page. I just thought that a Wikibirthday was a big deal to some extent.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 15:43, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- I don't see this as a problem myself, and was a little taken aback by a post in reaction to it that's now gone. As I mentioned after your RfA, be yourself. If posting about a wikibirthday is yourself, cool. It's fine. Take care of the sore mouth, and come back to editing when you're better. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 18:46, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- I am being myself and in doing so I made this section. I think that being here for a year is a big deal IMHO. My mouth is killing me but I'm still editing a bit. (though those pain killers and anti-biotics are driving me crazy....--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 18:49, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

- Yes, the friends who drove me home the first time I had the dental implant said the same thing about me. DYK
Hey White Shadows, I was working with a new user here and was wondering if you could review his draft against the DYK criteria (see the bottom of the thread in the first blue link in this post for an explanation why). I know it is not up to scratch now, but would like some feedback from someone who has been through the process before. Thanks, Airplaneman ✈ 04:43, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- P.S. Getting my wisdom teeth extracted only made me look like a chipmunk for a week ;). But trust me, it is worth it. Good luck, and happy Wikibirthday! Airplaneman ✈ 04:52, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- It looks fine but the books are out of order. See WP:MOS. You're supposed to have the books after the refs.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 15:46, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for catching that :). Feel better soon, Airplaneman ✈ 04:59, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

U-30
Hi, I've passed German submarine U-30 for GA. Good work addressing all my comments, I realise they were probably a bit more like a mini-ACR, but anyway. I added a couple of citations to Blair for you. Please check that you agree with my additions. Keep up the good work. Cheers. AustralianRupert (talk) 02:04, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
- It looks great. Thanks for doing the GA review :) You were so thorough that it just may pass an ACR!--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 02:09, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
- No worries at all. Take care. AustralianRupert (talk) 02:23, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Hello. In May you added a citation to a book from the "Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases" series published by Icon Group International to this article. Unfortunately, Icon Group International is not a reliable source - their books are computer-generated, with most of the text copied from Wikipedia (most entries have [WP] by them to indicate this, see e.g. [4]). I've only removed the reference, not the text it was referencing. I'm removing a lot of similar references as they are circular references; many other editors have also been duped by these sources. Despite giving an appearance of reliability, the name "Webster's" has been public domain since the late 19th century. Another publisher to be wary of as they reuse Wikipedia articles is Alphascript Publishing. Fences&Windows 15:44, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oh my God, how did I let those in that article? I remember reading that they ripped off parsec on his articles about German BB's....I'm sorry about that, I'll go over my other U-boat articles and removed any refs from them if I find it.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 16:06, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

The Helping Hand Barnstar | ||
The theme of this barney doesn't really fit the ocassion, but I'd like to thank you for helping out on the topics that I was working on during my trip. Thank you endlessly. Buggie111 (talk) 03:02, 26 July 2010 (UTC) |
- Good to have you back Buggie.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 15:12, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- So as to quickly finish this topic and not leave it for later, do you think Franz Ferdinand ready for another FAC after her Sokol treatment? I'm available for the next several months, so I'll be able to watch over it. Thanks again. Buggie111 (talk) 16:57, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- I guess though I want to add in a book by Greger before we re-submit it.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 21:37, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

U-36
Hi, White Shadows. I've started the GA review for German submarine U-36 (1936). There are a few outstanding issues, but they can wait until you get back from your holiday. When you get a chance please take a look. Cheers. AustralianRupert (talk) 07:14, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm not sure if you saw my reply to your question on my talkpage regarding the GAN for this article. I forgot to post a talkback, sorry. Essentially the gist was that I'm fine with reseting the timeframe for the review and have done so. I'm not adverse to keeping it open longer if you need more time. Cheers. AustralianRupert (talk) 15:46, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
- No, I saw it. Thanks anyway ;)--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 15:56, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
