WikiCup 2010 May newsletter
We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Hunter Kahn (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Two of last year's final 8, Theleftorium (submissions) and Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Request to nominate for adminship.
I think it would be very likely for a nomination to go in the right direction considering you have over 14,000 edits in a timespan of only 10 months. Rohedin TALK 20:05, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- User:NerdyScienceDude has asked the same thing for twice in the last two months. However a look at my block log may result in a few supports. Anyone else willing to once again give me some helpfull advice? Has my maturity increased enough in the past few months or should be sick with the July-August plan?--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:07, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- I only look for one key element in a user and that is the experience of the user. I think you meet that key element in my book and maybe others as well. Rohedin TALK 20:17, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- you do make a point. I often vote in RFA's based off of my trust towards that person and their good history. (often against my own standards)--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:19, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- Well if you ever consider it, message me via talk page. Rohedin TALK 20:22, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)You asked me to be honest, so I will. I would strongly advise against an RfA at this time. I think it would be likely to end up in a similar fashion to my first attempt. I'd say give it a few months and then start thinking about it, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:25, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- thank you HJ. I was going to say no anyway but I wanted another outside opinion :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:28, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- Echoing HJMitchell; any RFA for you is likely to be nasty, and I'm not sure what you're looking for from it. Ask yourself strongly why you would want to be an admin, and what you would do with it. Unless you have a specific task in mind, there is no benefit to admin status on Wikipedia other than the immunity from civility blocks, and while you've matured to the point where you're unrecognisable as the same person as six months ago, I'm not sure how you'd cope with the flood of abuse that comes with the job. An unwritten reason why RFA is so bitchy is that it serves as a trial-by-ordeal; if a candidate snaps at someone saying "oppose, too many admins currently" they're highly unlikely to be able to stay calm in the face of the combination of grumpy old-sweats, angry IPs and well-intentioned cluelessness from Jimbo and his acolytes that comes your way with admin status. (How would you have dealt with this guy in a way that didn't involve either getting angry and driving off a potential good-faith user, or reaching for the block-button?)
- One of the biggest reasons that I'd like to tools would be DYK. I am a very active person over there (though I must admit that I've been a bit unactive lately) and I would love to help assist in the never ending backlog that DYK has. (updateing the queue ect) I hardly have to worry about civility blocks as I just now shove off what BS comments come my way (like that IP) so I doubt that I'll go off the deep end based off of an oppose like that one. As for dealing with the IP, I'd just warn him and if he continues after the fourth warning, I'd block him on a non-contraversial reason, vandalism. I do however understand that my past (and age) would kill any RFA of mine so it;s not goin to happen for a while.--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:50, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- Admins aren't exempt from civility. The only benefit of adminship I can see for you is DYK- I'm informed it's constasntly backlogged, yet my name is on the "list of admins willing to help" but nobody's ever asked me, so I just make fixes at WP:ERRORS (compared to my 160+ edits and counting to ITN). You get a lot of abuse as an admin- take a look at the history of my talk page, for example, or the people berating me on T:MP- apparently I have a pro-American bias, to which my response, if it was worthy of one, would be "read the first 3 lines of my userpage, then come back and apologise"! You're better off just enjoying your content work at the minute. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:04, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- double standards are used here HJ. I'm not out for a get out of jail free card. Just here to help. It appears that being an admin will not help as of right now so I'm not going up for an RFA. I'm just going to stick with DYK and battleships and U-boats for now and worry about RFA when the time is right. Thanks.--White Shadows you're breaking up 21:10, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- (ec, re HJM) You're going to have to do some convincing to persuade me that admins aren't exempt from WP:CIV, especially in light of the fact that it's not very long since I was the subject of a torrent of (fabricated) allegations and rambling personal abuse from an admin on this talkpage, and I don't recall you stepping in to say anything. TBSDY was blocked for harassment, not civility (you should know, you blocked him), which is a different kettle of fish. – iridescent 21:11, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- @WS- trust me, U botas and battleships a re infinitely more interesting than edit wars and arbitration enforcement!
- @Iridescent- I'm afraid I'm a relative newcomer to WS's merry band of talk page stalkers, but I do my best to enforce civility (and have no tolerance for outright personal attacks), though I feel the policy lacks teeth (mainly becuase so many people think they're exempt from it and so few admins enforce it that you'd think WP:CIVIL and WP:AGF were obscure essays, not guidelines and policies!). Out of interest, howcome you gave up your own bit? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:42, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- Honesty I think, a word that rather few admins seem to understand. Malleus Fatuorum 22:46, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I think it would be best to wait until later this month or early July. Don't do it during the last two weeks of July because I won't be editing WP during that time, and I want a chance for a nom or co-nom, and I want to !vote. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐) 00:23, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'm going to be takeing a Wiki-break during much of the second half of this month (I'm going to Florida for vacation) then I'll be in Montreal for 4 days in July so I was going to make it late July. Oh well. I'll just wait and see what happens. I'll go up for an RFA when I'm ready and when someone who I hold in high prestege (Like you or HJ) think so too and are willing to nom me (As I hate self-noms)--White Shadows you're breaking up 00:33, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- RfA isn't pleasant y'know (I should know, I've been there. Twice!), it can be pretty stressful and it's impossible to know how bad it is until you've been through one- or in my case, nominated, co-nominated, run twice, failed once and closed a few SNOWs and candidate withdrawals so I've seen RfA from just about every perspective (and no, before you as, I have zero interest in an RfB or in being a 'crat!)! My best advice would be to keep doing what you do, keep your head down and focus on something more enjoyable, like boats, rather than adminship, which is neither as easy nor as fun as it looks from a non-admin perspective! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:00, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I know RFA is not very fun. I'm also keeping my head down and IMHO, I think that I'm the leading writer in this whole site on U-boats ever since Bellhalla left us in December. I've found me niche and I'm very happy were I am. But I know that I can do more. As an admin, I could help alot more in DYK rather than moveing stuff to P1 or P2 and verifying stuff. And since I seem to be the only person on wikipedia on Friday nights, I could block vandals that othersise would be free for 40 minutes to an hour at a time. (I've seen cases where I went to bed and a vanal was still loose) But like I said, I'm not going to go up for one until late this month or July-August.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:08, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Well you're welcome to bother me if it's DYK and everything's in order but you just need an admin to edit the fully protected page (I spend a fair bit of time dealing with {{editprotected}} requests, WP:ERRORS and ITN, so I know what I'm doing). I'm sure one of the regulars will
scream at me and accuse of admin abuseoffer some friendly advice if I fuck up! As for vandals, try as we might, we'll never catch them all wow! the only legitimate use for a Pokemon quote on WP ;)- no matter how many we block, there'll always be another pain in the arse right behind them. Of course if you get a particularly nasty one and I'm online, come and bug me- I take a very dim view of BLP vandals and am more than willing to use my banhammer! My best advice if you really want to be an admin (and it's not like it's a career move or anything) and you want it for the right reasons, make yourself useful as a non-admin in admin areas (like DYK, WP:ERRORS), avoid drama like the plague and hope you're making a good impression on the people you most often work with- for example, I was flattered by the number of ITN regulars who turned up to support my RfA. I always thought a good indicator of "readiness" was when multiple, highly respected editors start asking you to run- again, to use mine as an example, I was honoured when Fastily offered to nominate me. Btw, keep an eye out for a few more of my nominations over the next few weeks! :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:23, 6 June 2010 (UTC)- You're right on all accounts. Thanks and I'll keep that im mind.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:29, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I edit on Friday nights; perhaps we can have a joint RfA? :P Hi878 (talk) 01:11, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Give it some time, edit more articles and be less myspacey and you'll make a fine candidate someday. Trust me, I know more than possibly anyome else on this site what it takes to transform yourself from a myspacer to an ATM (Article typeing machine, lol) :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:15, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I know I'm not ready, I was trying to be funny. :) As for the myspacey part, I think that I've pretty much stopped. Except, of course, for my secret page, which I won't give up without a fight. :) It takes up almost none of my time, so... Anyhoo, does it seem to you like I've gotten rid of the myspacey disease that infected me for a few days? Hi878 (talk) 01:21, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm, secret page, eh? I shall find it and delete it as revenge for giving me an edit conflict! Mohahaha! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:23, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- you're on your way, I'll say that. As for your myspacey habits, you'll need to remove the secret page IMHO as that is a sign of immaturity in my book. Other than that your looking good but you need to edit a lot more. I cannot stress this enough, RFA voters hate to see editors who have more edits to talk pages than articles. I should know. until April, I had the same thing going on. (About the secret page, you don't need to delete it, I was just telling you my opinion)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:27, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'm going to have a very hard time with the talk-to-article ratio. Almost all that I do (other than MOTD) is revert vandalism. When I revert vandalism, I leave warnings. I don't want to go into article writing because I don't really trust myself to do it. :) So I'm going to have difficulties fixing that. Hi878 (talk) 01:46, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- And I think that we'll have to agree to disagree on the secret page thing. :) I'm keeping it until an MfD says otherwise. Hi878 (talk) 01:47, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Or until I can be bothered to find it and make it disappear! ;) Nah, they're not my cup of tea, but like the Earth Cabal thing, I'd say it's harmless at worst and mildly amusing at best. Participate in RfA long enough and you'll get to know that people hate vandal fighters (and basically almost anyone who does anything useful!)- there's this bizarre concept of "automated edits", but anyway, if I go down that path it will descend into a rant about all that's wrong with RfA (I think this summarises my views quite nicely). Btw, it's not that hard to wrote a reasonable article and get it up on DYK. The one piece of advice I'll offer both of you is fuck the article to talk edit ratios and all of that bollocks- edit where you want to edit and enjoy it because it's what you want to do, not because it looks like a good "career move". Btw, WS, I meant what I said above- if you need simple admin help (at DYK/Main Page especially) feel free to ask. Anyway, I'm going to bed, so goodnight to both of you! :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:46, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- LOL to the diff. Thanks HJ :)--White Shadows stood on the edge 02:48, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I remember that conversation... :) Anyhoo, I don't think most user share your view of the talk-to-article rations, sadly. And I agree; the whole "automated edits" thing is a bit odd... But whatever. Although the block button would be nice, there's still plenty of vandal-squashing to do up until the block point. Hi878 (talk) 03:12, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Indeed. Sadly RFa voters will oppose you off the bat in some cases based off of your editing pie chart from X!'s edit counter. That's why vandal fighting is a double edged sword at RFA. I suggest you try and edit a few articles rather than try to beat Tide rolls and TTTSNB and J delanoy. You'll never get there and people will not care what you have to bring to the admin table.--White Shadows stood on the edge 03:15, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- To be perfectly honest, I am afraid to make any edits to articles, beyond typos and that sort of thing. So that could be a problem. :) Hi878 (talk) 04:32, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I know I'm not ready, I was trying to be funny. :) As for the myspacey part, I think that I've pretty much stopped. (In response to my earlier comment's reply) I am going to be attending the 2010 National Scout Jamboree, and I will be on a DC tour the week before. My scout group isn't allowing cell phones, so I won't be able to use my iPhone to edit. So I will be about two weeks without any edits. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐) 03:26, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

So we're not going to be editing at the same time? PS: oyu've gotta tell me how to edit with a touch since I can never seem to edit, just log in and read comments. Treaty of Versailles
Hi White Shadows. Well done on the U-boat articles you have written. I notice you make a point of mentioning for each one that it was built in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, which is legalistically correct. Didn't, however, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement supersede the ToV, at least in a practical sense? I am wondering what the best way around this is, and where best to discuss it, other than your talk page of course. What do you think? --John (talk) 01:40, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the compliment :) I don't mind discussing this on my talk page if you'd like :) Yes the ToV did ban any submerisble from the German Navy however you are correct in saying that the Anglo-German Naval Agreement did allow German to openly create submarines. However it was still legally illegal (odd wording I know) for Germany to create the. As a result I've added that text in along with the fact that these submarines fell under the German Plan Z, an enlargement plan for the entire Kriegsmarine from 1939 to the end of the war (and beyond if Germany won).--White Shadows stood on the edge 01:46, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Makes sense. I wonder though about mentioning the AGNA as well to balance the topic, or whether maybe such detail would be outside the scope of these articles. Not a big deal. I'll think about it some more. Keep up the good work. --John (talk) 02:56, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I actually like the idea of mentioning the AGNT in the articles. That makes Germany seem less of a "cheater" in international politics and fixes any POV issues that comes with that. However I don't know how to go about adding such info into the text. Any ideas? Thanks,--White Shadows stood on the edge 02:58, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Let's think about it. Would the Milhist talk page be worth a visit? And talking about "if Germany won", have you ever read The Man in the High Castle? It is better than Fatherland, in my opinion. --John (talk) 03:59, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- I think that the Milhist talk page would be a good idea. As for books, I have not read The Man in the High Castle from cover to cover but I do get the plot. In my opinion Germany would never control that much land even at the most optimistic of versions of Operation Barbarossa. Fatherland seems much more realistic. I can see a Europe controled by Germany and the US being it's main enemy but not most of the world...--White Shadows stood on the edge 13:22, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Handleing and biteing
Sorry, but it's annoying me! As a general rule, verbs ending in "e" lose the "e" when converted to "ing" so love becomes loving, handle becomes handling, bite becomes biting etc. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:35, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

How did you find out about my recent article creation? ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐) 01:24, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- I saw it on your contribs page. I decided to pitch in and correct your mistakes and snag co-nom credit on an DYK from it. (and considering that I'm nearly done with the IXA's I was already moveing on with the IXB's by createing U-111, U-64 and the class article itself.--White Shadows stood on the edge 01:27, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Could you help me finish this article so I can send it off to DYK? Thanks. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐) 23:29, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
- You'll have to give me co-credit (well you don't have to I can just do it for "free" but it'd be nice) Sure I'll go do it as long as I can have the random honor of createing the other red links from the Type IXB's....--White Shadows stood on the edge 23:30, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
- I know this may seem a bit odd but can you please give me a while to finish it? I've done the first patrol but I really don't feel like finishing this thing up on one go ahead and I normally do these thing in one or two edits if you know what I mean...--White Shadows stood on the edge 23:52, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Re; Just a passig comment
Glad you like the idea, check WP:SUP for more examples. I will be actually having a workshop on that subject at the upcoming WikiSym. With regards to a particular article, please don't hesitate - and in fact, feel encouraged - to point out all the errors and things to be fixed int he GA review. Addressing such issues is part of the assignment :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 00:16, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Bellhalla
Re your comment about Bellhalla (talk · contribs), I agree that he is a great loss to the WP (and Wikipedia itself). I've tried e-mailing without getting a reply. When an editor stops editing suddenly and there is no reason why they would do so (such as a dispute), then I can only think that something terrible must have happened in real life. Particularly with the cessation of editing shortly after he became an admin - there was no reason for Bellhalla to leave, was there? Mjroots (talk) 11:26, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- I can noly hope for the best from him but I fear the worst. There was no reason for him top leave. His editing was stable, he showed no signs of slowing down, he just became an admin and most of all, he was very conected to the project. I hope he's ok......--White Shadows stood on the edge 21:01, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Grab some glory, and a barnstar
Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐) 00:56, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
