Adminship
Since it's been two months since I last asked, may I please nominate you for adminship? I think you've improved since the last time I asked. Some key points that are considered in RFAs that would certainly apply to you:
- 22 DYKs
- 17 GAs
- 2 GTs
- Good anti-vandal work
- !voting in RFAs
- Participation in WikiProjects, especially WikiProject Ships
Considering these points, what do you now think? ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ message • changes) 01:06, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- NSD, I think White Shadows has potential to be a good candidate - it might be a little too soon. WS, you know of course that I don't mean to be patronizing or anything, but you are still sorting out the maturity issues and those require a few months before they get fixed. If you disagree, just shoot me an email and we can talk about it. :) Best! ceranthor 01:09, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)Uhhh... Perhaps a second opinion may help. Afterall, there are several people who will oppose based off of my age alone. I do feel that I have improved though in terms of policy, and content creation.....--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:11, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- You could pwn SGF if he comes back. Anyway, age has been removed from WP:GRFA, in case you wanted to know. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ message • changes) 01:15, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Though it has not been removed from people's own personal standards and thoughts NSD.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:16, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Your decision is your own; if you want to go for it, try the experience. ceranthor 01:23, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- I know that it's my own desision but past incidents like my block in February could kill any RFA of mine. However, nothing ventured nothing gained. I just wanted another opinion. Not that I'm being indisisive. I'd just like to know where others stand on this situation.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:44, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

I guess we should wait, then. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ message • changes) 01:47, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Maybe your right. but it could go either way based off of how people perceve my improvement. Perhaps you should ask another person like I originaly said. (you'll be suprised to see some of the responses you'll get, good or bad)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:49, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'd suggest that you listen to ceranthor's advice. He's(?) been there and got the T-shirt. Malleus Fatuorum 02:08, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Your right Malleus. He does have the T-shirt. I'm sorry NSD, You'll have to wait a couple more months :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:11, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Suggest August, you'll be out of school then and can safely obsess about checking the current count. You'll lose some votes to age, as you know, and some will say a year after a block is better. So if you fail in August, you can try again in February.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:32, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed. but I was thinking of early August or late July bacuse I'm going to be fairly buisy after August 15. It's not that I want to go up for one faster but for personal reasons.--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:36, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

- This might seem way to premature but what do you all think about me going through admin coaching? Apparently I have the potential to be a candidate but as you all said, maturity issues may still exist or at least linger in people's minds. so what do you all think about this? Is it a good idea and who would even want to coach me based off of my semi-checkered past?--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:16, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- For some people, admin coaching works. I think for you though it's a different case. The editing maturity is not quite there yet; give it some time. I'm confident that you are similar to me - it will probably take a few months for you to mature, settle into what you enjoy, and eventually, succeed at RfA. I think you have a good shot, WS, so just keep up the stellar work. ceranthor 21:52, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have setteled into what I enjoy. However, why do you think that for some people, admin coaching does not work? And as for the editing maturity, I have improved but I still understand that I'm not quite there yet. However I'm still a bit confused about the first part of your comment?--White Shadows you're breaking up 22:01, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- I was referring to the admin areas that they enjoy. As for the other part... Some people are really dedicated to coaching and really learn from it (Phantomsteve comes to mind, though he wasn't admin coached iirc), while others don't get anything out of it. I just think you'll be one of the latter who mature on their own time, that's all. If you want to, admin coaching might help, but it's not very liked over at RfA. ceranthor 22:37, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- Oh. Well first off, I do enjoy helping out over at DYK (I have over 300 edits to it). And there is always a backlog over there with updateing and whatnot. And I guess I can just learn on my own :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 22:40, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

DYK check tool
is well known to fail on (too) many 5x expansion. Thus an advice is to run it on the current article version and then go to history, select past version, re-run, and divide manually. This can save from embarrassment at T:TDYK. Another note, we usually give a chance for improvement while the article is at T:TDYK and use when it is not feasible to fix the nom (article appeared on ITN, or had 100k size before failed expansion, or something like that). GA article passed
Hi, I reviewed the article you nominated at Talk:German submarine U-42 (1939)/GA1 and passed it. My only wish (besides wanting to know more about what happened to the crew) is that the article had a map of the submarines voyages. Congratulations on a Good article! Regards, Xtzou (Talk) 19:05, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- I wish that I knew on both accounts as well. U-boats are very fascinateing IMHO. you can see a map of all of U-42's patrols on Uboat.net. And as for the crew. I suggest Uboatwaffe as a good place to find that info. Thanks for passing that GA for me as well :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:08, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

SM UB-50, more SGF bombing
I finished fixing the bare URLs. It also appears SGF just email bombed me with an account that wasn't mentioned in the SPI case. You'll love this subject line. it said "If you don't give me White Shadows's email address then I won't stop email bombing you ever." I'm not going to give him your email address. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ message • changes) 13:31, 3 May 2010 (UTC) Great. I'll go and finish the last patrol now. And thanks for not telling SGF my e-mail. Larry D. Alexander
Just letting you know I moved Larry Dell Alexander to Larry D. Alexander as he seems to go by his initials most often. I think this is favored by the MOS. However I've now also discovered that Larry Alexander was salted pre-emptively even though the page was never at that title. Before I go make another RFPP request I thought you might have advice on which title would be best since you're the one who did most of the work creating the article. You can reply here, I always watch pages I start threads on. —Soap— 19:08, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Kronprinz
Hi White Shadows, I noticed you made some edits to SMS Kronprinz (1914). I've been working on these German BB articles for over 3 years now, and would really like to do them all on my own (as far as the writing/etc. goes). I don't want to be too territorial about it, but it's not as though there's a shortage of battleship articles, right? Thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 02:39, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- This user is a bit strange sorry for third person After my edits to the 1936B class, he jumped in and nomed one for DYK. Then, there's this, as I marked my name on your sanbox BTW, you can remove it. So, WS, I'd suggest you follow Parsec's advice. We've got this to finish up! Buggie111 (talk) 02:57, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- You apparently have'nt edited the article in over 2 years. And I was just trying to help out by adding in an image and expanding the lead. But if your that "territorial" about German BB then I can just go and work on AH and then find something else to do. Sorry, just trying to help....--White Shadows you're breaking up 10:40, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- And if I cannot edit these articles, is there any German Battleships or Battlecruisers that you can point to me that I'm allowed to work on? There's got to be at least one ship that you can let me write.--White Shadows you're breaking up 10:44, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Well, the battlecruisers are all but done (i.e., all that remains is getting the last few of them through FAC). As to the rest, I'd really rather do them all myself; as I've been working towards this goal for 3 years now, long before OMT was even a thought. I have all of the necessary sources at least for the dreadnoughts. There are a ton of British BB articles that are in fairly rough shape that you could work on, for instance. Parsecboy (talk) 10:53, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- OK I understnad. I would have the same feelings to some extend about U-boats. However, considering that I do not own a single book on battleships, I must rely on the class page to write the individual articles themselves. Thats why I was working on Kronprinz. With that said, I doubt that I can get anything done with British BB's.--White Shadows you're breaking up 10:56, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- That's alright. I suggested the British BBs because they're much better documented than others (I've had to accumulate a number of books both on the ships and the war to write the German articles) and they might be easier to write (I noticed you're having trouble on this with the Austro-Hungarian ships). You could also try the American ships, especially those that saw service during World War II; several of the South Dakota-class battleships could use work. MBK pointed out inter-library loan as a possible option for the Austrian ships; for the American and British ones, there's been enough written that you could probably just get by with Google Books.
- One thing I've found is it's generally easier to start with a class article before hitting the individual ships, because the service history is supposed to be a shorter summary of the individual ship articles. Technical stuff is much easier to come by (especially with regards to armament; [navweaps.com] is an excellent source for guns and torpedoes and such). Maybe try one of the Standard battleship classes, like the Pennsylvania or New Mexico classes; there should be no shortage of books on them, I'm sure. Parsecboy (talk) 11:10, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Parsec! I'll take a look at them. Good luck with the German BB's and I hope you don't mind if I still make the occasional typo correction or other minor fix if I ever come across one. Your Ships are very interstiona and I have spent litterally hours reading about them. good job :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:39, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

- It's a failry OK article. Some major issues with lack of citations (and I added in a few citation needed templates). You may also want to rename the Soil section System of a Down as they soon renamed the band name. Take for example Chris Martin, the setion is called "Coldplay", not the original name of the band "The Starfish". In an effort to same time (and to comply with WP:MOS regulations), you may also want to just use the proper multiple citation format where you cite a source say: <ref name=NAME>INSERT CITATION HERE</ref> and then to cite it again, instead of copying the whole thing just put <ref name=NAME/> and it will do the same thing as copying and pasteing the citation over and over again. IF you are still a bit confused, just look at a few of my edits to the article and you'll see what I did :) If you have any other Q's or comments just ask and if you want me to read over the article again, after you make a few more changes, just ask :) Good luck and happy editing!--White Shadows you're breaking up 03:18, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

- There is no way that I'm adding in a 200+ long list of ships sunk. I've got every single one of them done exept for U-37, the one with the most ships sunk, at 53. If you want to add them in, go ahead but I'm not doing that right now or any time soon. On admin status
Re this: I resigned because I've always argued that "authority positions" should be periodically removed and the users in question forced to live as "ordinary" users for a while, and I thought that someone needed to lead the way. A lot of our current admins passed RFA when Wikipedia was a much friendlier environment, and since the change to a more authoritarian setup have been sheltered by people's reluctance to "fight the power", so genuinely don't realise how toxic the environment has become for non-admins.
If you want a fairly obvious example, you were blocked for these comments a few months ago, despite their just being frustrated comments with no actual element of abuse, of the kind anyone makes when irritated.* At the same time, as part of a related conversation, an admin was posting obvious and easily checked lies about me on your talkpage (here is every comment I've ever made at RFA; anyone, do feel free to point out which are "outrageous things that really sling mud at people unfairly, with a lot of hyperbole and sometimes outright lies"), and didn't even get criticized by any of the dozens of admins watching your talkpage. Likewise, Malleus, as he never tires of saying, was once blocked for using the word "sycophantic"; meanwhile this admin hasn't even been warned, let alone blocked. If you go digging you can find example after example of this kind of double-standard.
I wasn't resigning out of some kind of sense of ideological "I hate admins" purity—if I ever come across a situation where admin buttons will be useful, I wouldn't hesitate to switch them back on. (I did actually ask for them back on one occasion, to clean up the worst of the mess at First Flight High School, but the request prompted others to look at the page so in the event I didn't need them.) If you ever do go through RFA (hint: this definitely won't help that particular cause), I'd strongly recommend making the same promise (my suggestion was three months as an ordinary user for every year as an admin). Wikipedia's environment is changing quite quickly, and there is a genuine problem with those at the top thinking today's project with 48,338,701 editors works the same as it did when they passed RFA. Even Arbcom kick their members off after at most three years, but admins last forever. (There have only been 49 desysoppings of abusive admins in the entire history of Wikipedia.) – iridescent 10:44, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
*I think that block actually had the right effect, albeit for the wrong reasons; it forced you to think about whether you actually wanted to be here and why; plus, it got you thinking about why having a block log can be as sign of a user being targeted by an admin clique, rather than a sign that the user is abusive (which was, after all, the point of my post that started that whole exchange). It was a sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut, though, and if you'd been an admin at the time Julian would never have dreamed of blocking for it. That's no criticism of Julian, who's one of our better admins—it's just an illustration of how ingrained the double standard in Wikipedia's system is, that even he was applying it.
- Thanks for the reply. I litterally am walking out my door right now so I'll get back to you in more depth when I return home later today. Thanks :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 10:59, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
- TO be honest, I supported Atama in his RFA and I feel like he is one of our better admins. A the time, to be dead-honest, I had a burning passion to get back at you and malleus for everything that you ever did to me. Howver, what I said was not block-deserveing and Julian only blocked me to keep me out of possibly bigger trouble. (I now realized that he probably saved me from myself to be honest) You are right however, Had I been an admin or had just a bit more "importantness" in the project, he would not have blocked me at all. But as you pointed out, there are double standards here. It is hard to just edit as a normal non-admin. But just one question, will you ever just ask for the tools back just because you want to? You seem to have been one of the "better admins" and I feel that if more people that were "better" got the tools, this project would be a better place.--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:48, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
- Basically, what I said in my last paragraph above. If I was regularly finding myself in a position where they'd be useful—if I went back to New Pages patrol or clearing out CAT:SD, or I found myself needing to do a number of history merges, for instance—I wouldn't have an ideological objection to going back to admin status. I wouldn't go back just for the sake of having it; aside from the de facto immunity from blocks, and people generally being more polite to you than they would be otherwise, there's no actual benefit to admin status unless you like bossing people about, which is a side of things that never appealed to me—it's a WP:BADSITES cliché but nonetheless true that the people who generally use the admin tools the most are the ones who are least suited to use them. – iridescent 21:07, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
- I know. Many admins hardly never do any content work anymore (If they ever did any in the first place) Heck, I'm not the kind of person who wants to (myuch less likes to) tell others what to do. I only ever wanted the tools to help out to the ever growing backlog at DYK (Which only has about 3-5 true deticated admins to the project even though the list has 20+ names) and AIV. (Though I only have about 100 edits at AIV)--White Shadows you're breaking up 21:12, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
- I got through RFA with a grand total of zero edits to AIV, as did Karanacs, as did Moni. The Counter Vandalism Unit may like sometimes to act like they own Wikipedia, but they really don't. If you want to "rack up points" to game an RFA, the place where you'll score the highest is still WP:AFD as it's the easiest place to demonstrate that you do/don't understand policy. The cynical but true cheat-sheet for gaming RFA I once wrote is two years old, but just as accurate as it ever was (just change the names). If you ever do go for RFA, I'll warn you you'll be disappointed with the end result if you pass. – iridescent 21:41, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

DYK for German Type IXA submarine
On May 18, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article German Type IXA submarine, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

This seems like it might be very useful, along with everything else on the page. I completely agree with that Manifesto, it comprises my ideas on BLPs and tagging perfectly, along with AfD. What do you think? SilverserenC 21:16, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Re: Your message
The message you linked to is now 8 days old and is amongst the edits reported to ANI by Malke earlier today. That report was listed as resolved. I have already had two conversations with two administrators in regard to all this, neither of whom chose to block me. Since you have decided to involve yourself in this matter, for no reason whatsoever, I can only suggest that you carry on in the manner you think is best, as shall I. Thank you for your message. ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 02:02, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

- Your block log is here. From a cursory glance, it seems to me that the block was harsh, but not improper. My best advice (as an entirely uninvolved admin) would be to drop it, move on and find something more rewarding to do- the longer you dwell on it, the less happy you'll be here. you'll be much happier if you just go and revert some vandalism or write an article. Austro Hungary battleship list.
I was gonna complain, but, on second thought, my draft is smaller than this. It's got a better lead, but nothing else. and plese, leave the Erzherzog Karls for me (not like as if you did anything to them, but this immense workload of yours is outsourcing my fairclaim to the GT. And, well, WP:OWN states that you could have done wht you did, so no biggie. Buggie111 (talk) 01:00, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
- Can I see your draft? And I'll leave you the Tegethoffs and the Karl's for you to promote. Try to get the class articles to GA in the next few days if you can :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:16, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
- I pasted in the lead. The rest was the same as the stuff in yours. I'd like to get to work on the Karl's and Tegetthoff's, but User:Buggie111/ Russian battleship Sevastopol (1895) is yelling at me to finish it. I think that I should chceck over Sturm's comments on my talk, then go on from there. You'll have to do the reviews though, as, by my estimates, they will be reviewed somwhere in mid-June. You'll get credit for them, same if you do all of the work on SMS Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand for it's FAC and SM UB-50 for it's GAN, while notifying the reviewers that I won't be on. Thanks in advance. And don't launch the Sevastopol. I'm waiting for Sturm to get me a ref, and I'd like to fix the probs listed in the GAC/FAC myself. And, come to think of it, we need to get Kriegsmarine done. Buggie111 (talk) 01:21, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
- Too many things at once! First things first, I need to finish my User:White Shadows/List of battleships of Austria-Hungary (Which will take me as much time as it will take you to get your assignment done) and you need to get the Tegetthoff class and Karl class to GA before you leave (At least get one done) Erstaz Monarch will pass it's GAN I'm sure so that will leave us the ships from the two classes as well as the list. Can you get to work on those in the next few days? Thanks.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:27, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Friends with RJ
Your comment about the blocking admins being friends with RJ is unfounded and out of line. I'm not talking about Gwen here, I'm talking about me.
I never stepped in to the mess between RJ and Malke as it had been dealt with by the time I came along. Both parties were in degrees wrong there and both were dealt with, albeit not symmetrically, but that's how it goes sometimes. My block of Malke was at best tangentially related to the RJ/Malke interaction. Anyone with an axe to grind, as Malke did, will quickly find themselves in trouble here on Wikipedia.
More to the point, I don't remember many interactions between me and RJ, and I don't remember any being especially positive. In short, s/he is not a friend of mine, nor are any of the partisans on Talk:Michael Collins (Irish leader). In fact, I have previously blocked some of those opposing Malke there.
You would do well to retract your statement about the blocking admins.
Toddst1 (talk) 13:13, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Any refs for the Karls?
I'm currently finishing my draft on them, and I plan to send them to DYK. The problem is that I have nearly 4000 characters left. I plan to fill the armament section with indetail stuff about the guns SEe French battleship Massena and Brazilian battleship Riachuelo for examples, but I don't know if that will be enough. Could you check your references and maybe look it over once I submit my draft. If you get it into the necesary size, you'll get cco-credit for all of the ships (I plan to do a four hook). Needing Some Help
Hey, White Shadows. Mountain Girl and I need some help. By the way, Mountain Girl is one of my friends who has joined Wikipedia recently. We would like to write an article together about our school, Eagle County Charter Academy. Since we have never done an article before, we really don't know what to do. If you could help us in any way, that would be GREAT. Thank you, :)CamrynRocks! (talk) 15:56, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Ok well you've got what you want to write about down. Now the next thing that you will want to do is to get some sources. If your school has a website that would be great. Take a look at Eastern View High School for instance (Yes I attend that school) you can base your new article off of that one. And since you'll likely be working on it in stages try to make a sandbox about it first like User:CamrynRocks!/Eagle County Charter Academy. Once you are done writeing it, just ask Wehwalt to move it to the actual article itself which would be titled Eagle County Charter Academy. If you still need help, just ask me or Wehwalt :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 16:13, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm so picky. Since I created Reshadieh, could I have the joy of expanding that one? I know I have several references, HMS Erin has more, and so does the web I've rescued Hazegray, see [2]. You can take Abdul, and I might help out on the list for Reshadieh, and maybe PArsec could do Goeben. Buggie111 (talk) 00:54, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- I don't want any of them I just call the list. (anyone is free to help though considering that I don't own what I write)--White Shadows you're breaking up 00:57, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- Ok then. Off I go. Buggie111 (talk) 00:59, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

I DID IT!!! I STARTED AN ARTICLE! i think
Guess what? Guess what? Wait no, don't guess, i'll tell you. Buggie111 started an infobox for me on Eagle County Charter Academy. I can only edit the info box though. Why is that? Can you help me actually start an article, not just the info box? But i did something at least, something!CamrynRocks! (talk) 16:10, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'm leaving now, but I'll get back to it and hash out a draft. Judging by the calendar on your school website, you'll have school until Friday, so ask your librarian for information on your school. And I've answerd at the Civil WAr talkpage. Buggie111 (talk) 17:00, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- Good job and to edit past the infobox, just scroll past the infobox and type stuff under the end of it.--White Shadows you're breaking up 22:07, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
What are you doing!?
Whack! You've been whacked with a wet trout. Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly. |

- What does that mean? Does Ninjalemming remember us at all?--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:57, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, his memory is coming back. At first he didn't remember anything about wiki, but then it started coming back. I was really worried until he got back to me. He was in the hospital but now he's home.Malke2010 02:01, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- That's great! I'm going to bed now so tell him that I hope he's feeling better :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:09, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Erzherzog Karl and Tegetthoff GA's
I have put all of them at GAN. Be prepared for a repeat of the Habsburg reviews. Should be no problem. Buggie111 (talk) 02:15, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- Great. I'll just take credit for the ones that I worked on though.--White Shadows you're breaking up 10:19, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
FRancesco Cariaccolo
Thanks for redirecting that. I had a draft in progress to dyk it but was nowhere near done. You can work on it if you want, as my sources already are expended with its current info state. Buggie111 (talk) 00:42, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Caio Duilo
So that means I can have another one of your articles? The count would be, say Impero, Napoli, and (as of now) Caio Duilo, for a Margherita, the elena and Sardagena (the heck with WP:OWN). Re Umberto is next. You can do them over my vacation, but please leave Leonardo. I want it as an April Fools hook Buggie111 (talk) 13:39, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- On the other hand, hash that. I th'ink I've got refs. Buggie111 (talk) 14:20, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
