March Madness 2017
G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.
For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

- A recent RfC has redefined how articles on schools are evaluated at AfD. Specifically, secondary schools are not presumed to be notable simply because they exist.
- AfDs that receive little participation should now be closed like an expired proposed deletion, following a deletion process RfC.
- Defender, HakanIST, Matiia and Sjoerddebruin are our newest stewards, following the 2017 steward elections.
- The 2017 appointees for the Ombudsman commission are Góngora, Krd, Lankiveil, Richwales and Vogone. They will serve for approximately 1 year.
- A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
- Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
- A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

A cup of coffee for you!
Thanks for knocking out those clarifications. I would have tried tonight, I simply ran out of time last night and had to save what I had. Thank you for the Barnstar! It is my first and I don't think it could have been presented to me for a more important article, battleships, and US military ships in general, are important to me and helping make these articles better is my desire. I've just requested Eugene Holman for creation but realized that you deleted it. Was this a PROD, in which case it could simply be restored?Zigzig20s (talk) 23:05, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
- I came across his name while working on Paul A. Gompers. But actually I would rather you restored and improved the article yourself, as I have no idea if this is covered by my topic ban and I don't want to spend time on the Wikidrama. That's really Wikipedia's loss.Zigzig20s (talk) 06:11, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

- Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
- The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
- An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
- After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.
- After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
- Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.
It doesn't appear to me that the strict criteria of CSD A7 applies for this article. Prod or an AfD would be a better way to go. I am not finding sufficient items in google scholar, google news, HighBeam, etc. to establish notability per GNG or for a research professor.–CaroleHenson (talk) 12:36, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Investigation of potential copyright issue
Dear TomStar81 I wrote an article about NetMan to introduce this software publicly. It is one of the products of Edco company (https://www.edco.ir/netman/) in Iran. And I wrote the article based on this website. Also, I wrote the reference in the article... what should I do now? Please remove the copyright violation tag, so I could edit the article... — Preceding unsigned comment added by MegaNetIRAN (talk • contribs) 06:20, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

- An RfC has clarified that user categories should be emptied upon deletion, but redlinked user categories should not be removed if re-added by the user.
- Discussions are ongoing regarding proposed changes to the COI policy. Changes so far have included clarification that adding a link on a Wikipedia forum to a job posting is not a violation of the harassment policy.
- You can now see a list of all autoblocks at Special:AutoblockList.
- There is a new tool for adding archives to dead links. Administrators are able to restrict other user's ability to use the tool, and have additional permissions when changing URL and domain data.
- Administrators, bureaucrats and stewards can now set an expiry date when granting user rights. (discuss, permalink)
- Following an RfC, the editing restrictions page is now split into a list of active restrictions and an archive of those that are old or on inactive accounts. Make sure to check both pages if searching for a restriction.
Hi TomStar--I see you deleted this article a while ago, after it was tagged as A7. I wish I had been around to disagree: I don't think it's an A7 candidate at all; at the very least it should have had a chance at AfD. As it is, Martin is now more famous as a chef/food person than as a musician (for better or for worse...): there is a LOT of pretty strong local coverage. Will you please consider restoring it? Thanks, Mindy Dirt (talk) 02:58, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

The page I am trying to update is my Father-in-law's page. He is Frank J. Breth. (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Frank_J._Breth) He has his own page and I wanted to provide a larger photo of him as well as add the Awards section near the bottom of his awards/ribbons. Please let me know if you can help. Also I was trying to add his name to the Vietnam Gallantry Cross "list of awardees" as well. I added it, but not sure it will stick. Please contact me if you can help, I have a list of his awards (MSCUSN (talk) 16:30, 31 May 2017 (UTC)) — Preceding unsigned comment added by MSCUSN (talk • contribs) 16:23, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments. I'm not sure if this is the right avenue of replying to you on this. But please let me know how I need to get you a list of his awards. Also, as mentioned, I was given a higher resolution of his official black and white picture from the Historic branch of Headquarters Marine Corps. So I'm not sure what the rules are on this since the Marine Corps owns it and it's been given to me by them. So please let me know how to get you the list of his awards. And again, thank you very much for your time and support! (MSCUSN (talk) 15:39, 2 June 2017 (UTC))

- An RfC proposing an off-wiki LTA database has been closed. The proposal was broadly supported, with further discussion required regarding what to do with the existing LTA database and defining access requirements. Such a tool/database formed part of the Community health initiative's successful grant proposal.
- Some clarifications have been made to the community banning and unblocking policies that effectively sync them with current practice. Specifically, the community has reached a consensus that when blocking a user at WP:AN or WP:ANI, it is considered a "community sanction", and administrators cannot unblock unilaterally if the user has not successfully appealed the sanction to the community.
- An RfC regarding the bot policy has closed with changes to the section describing restrictions on cosmetic changes.
- Users will soon be able to blacklist specific users from sending them notifications.
- Following the 2017 elections, the new members of the Board of Trustees include Raystorm, Pundit and Doc James. They will serve three-year terms.

You can learn more about the research specifics at meta:Research:Autoconfirmed article creation trial, while Wikipedia talk:Autoconfirmed article creation trial is probably the best venue for general discussion.
- Following an RfC, WP:G13 speedy deletion criterion now applies to any page in the draftspace that has not been edited in six months. There is a bot-generated report, updated daily, to help identify potentially qualifying drafts that have not been submitted through articles for creation.
- You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. Invitation to Admin confidence survey
Hello,
Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.
The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.
To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.
We really appreciate your input!
Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Do you remember that this was given to you for trust and support? When you said "and would encourage others to have a little more faith in such a seasoned veteran editor". Now I would encourage you to have a little more faith in a seasoned veteran editor. I have not seen much good come out of arbitration, sadly. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:02, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
Open to chat. I am a victim of arbitration, as you may know, and have seen others in the position, so have some dangerous thoughts about arbitration, very generally so: an enormous waste of the community's time, and fairness not always emerging. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:41, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

You wrote: , I had assumed that the bad blood was of a vendetta nature - that two editors had a disagreement (they had) and the one with the admin tools had ended it.
- I don't have admin tools
- I didn't have a disagreement - I came in as a neutral third party to that edit war, observed it and reported it. I never edited the page. I observed the sameWP:BATTLE that led you to the ARC
- I certainly don't have a Vendetta against Joe - in fact, back when I had admin tools, I unblocked him in 2013

Joefromrandb arbitration case request archived

Text for deleted "Edward Cochrane McLean, Jr."?
Could you please post a link to the deleted article on Edward Cochrane McLean, Jr. on my talk page? Gratefully ----Aboudaqn (talk) 03:46, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
- Concerning your request[edit] ...I can put the material on the talk page, however I'm assuming that you'd like the text for a second crack an article, and if that is the case in the interest of preserving the history for any attempted rebuild would you prefer to have the material userfied instead? I can move it to a subpage where you can work on it if you like. TomStar81 (Talk) 20:08, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2017
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2017).
- Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.
- Wikimedians are now invited to vote on the proposals in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey on Meta Wiki until 10 December 2017. In particular, there is a section of the survey regarding new tools for administrators and for anti-harassment.
- A new function is available to edit filter managers which can be used to store matches from regular expressions.
- Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is open until Sunday 23:59, 10 December 2017 (UTC). There are 12 candidates running for 8 vacant seats.
- Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
- The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.
ArbCom 2017 election voter message
Hello, TomStar81. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Re: Feliz Navidad!
Feliz Navidad, to you too and may God cover you and your loved ones with lots pf blessings this coming year and those years which are yet to come.
This last year I did a lot of exploring, investigating and documenting historical artifacts, structures and places in Arizona. I always take some members of my family on these trips. This way not only do they learn about history, but they also learn to appreciate what those who came before us had to go through in the 18th century and before.
I created a "List of historic properties" in Wikipedia for most of the towns that I have documented and in "Facebook" I go into some of the details of my adventures. I hope to continue my work/hobby this coming year. God bless you. Tony the Marine (talk) 21:26, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

- An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
- Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.
- A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.
- The Arbitration Committee has enacted a change to the discretionary sanctions procedure which requires administrators to add a standardized editnotice when placing page restrictions. Editors cannot be sanctioned for violations of page restrictions if this editnotice was not in place at the time of the violation.

Paul H. Irving
Hi Tom, I see that the Paul H. Irving page was deleted because material was copied from the Milken website and was a promo/copyright violation. I am not the original author, though I work for the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology where he is currently a distinguished scholar in residence. My team's been in touch with his admin team, and we've let them know why the original page wasn't acceptable.
I'd like to get the page set back up if possible as he frequently makes media appearances/contributions regarding aging issues<ref>https://www.wsj.com/news/author/8509</ref><ref>https://www.nextavenue.org/showcase/influencers-aging-2016/paul-irving/</ref><ref>https://www.forbes.com/sites/nextavenue/2017/06/22/cities-must-tackle-longevity-inequality/#57cf2a8b3c03</ref> and is former president of the [[Milken Institute]] and current chair of its Center for the Future of Aging. We'd like to add new original material that avoids promo content and largely centers around his frequent involvement in the national aging conversation, including his authorship of ''The Upside of Aging''.<ref>https://www.wiley.com/en-us/The+Upside+of+Aging%3A+How+Long+Life+Is+Changing+the+World+of+Health%2C+Work%2C+Innovation%2C+Policy%2C+and+Purpose-p-9781118692035</ref>
Also, because you mentioned a predilection for haiku:
All of us will age
Some know this much more than most
Then there's Paul Irving

- I see that you want an article because of his media appearances, which might be interpreted as meaning in order to promote his media appearances. But as for notability , media appearances do not show notability. The book might: you will need substantial 3rd party reviews in well-known reliable sources. The presidency might also, if there is substantial coverage of his role from third-party independent reliable sources, not press releases or mere announcements. The proper procedure is to write the article in draft space, because "my team"makes it clear that you are a connected contributor. If the article is satisfactory, the editor who accepts it can ask me for the unprotection. DGG ( talk ) 23:18, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

Request to restore page for Chris Rowland
Hello! The co-producer and editor of Wadd: The Life & Times of John C. Holmes is named Christopher Rowland. Currently, the credit on Wikipedia links to a British politician of the same name rather than the filmmaker. I was trying to link to the correct person, so I made a page for Chris Rowland, which I failed to provide references for in a timely fashion. I'd like to respectfully request that you restore the page, and I can then add (what I hope are) appropriate references. The references I have include Rowland's IMDB page https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1270042/, two reviews of the film that list him in the credits http://variety.com/1999/film/reviews/wadd-the-life-times-of-john-c-holmes-1200459514/ and https://www.nytimes.com/2001/01/12/movies/film-review-one-actor-s-particular-um-talent.html, and the official site for the documentary http://www.waddthejohnholmesdocumentary.com. Would these be sufficient to establish authenticity and relevancy? Thank you in advance for your consideration and advice. Earlygrrl (talk) 15:31, 21 March 2018 (UTC)earlygrrl
- (talk page stalker) Hi @Earlygrrl:. TS is away on and off so I've restored this to your user space so you can add the sources. You can find it in User:Earlygrrl/Chris Rowland. Let one of us know if we can help. StarM 01:19, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Star Mississippi and Earlygrrl: Star Mississippi restored you page, but you've no real sources for the author, and the ones provided are questionable at best. You have links to the imdb, however per Wikipedia:Citing IMDb these are not useful in supply proof of credibility within the context of the csd a7 speedy deletion criteria, and the only other source given makes no mention of Chris Rowland. Collectively, that makes your film man completely unremarkable from a perspective of both WP:NOTABILITY and WP:BLP. It is my opinion at this time that there is simply insufficient information to warrant an article on the man, so please do keep that in mind when and if you elect to republish the article. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

- Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
- Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
- The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
- The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.
- There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.
- The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.
- A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
- The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.
@Drmies, Ben MacDui, Nick-D, and Cordless Larry: As part of this SPI case, I looked through all the accounts that Soupforone interacted with while he was unblocked and compiled my list in the sandbox. I wanted to draw your attention to the fact that my investigation has uncovered Soupforone interacted with at least 5 accounts blocked for sock-puppetry on site under various case names, not that it proves anything other than bad luck, but it is something we should keep in mind just in case. The full compiled list is here, you are welcome to copy, review, or otherwise log it; just leave the nowiki tags intact on my page so it doesn't cause a ruckus. At the moment none of the given accounts are suspected of being anything other than honest, good working wikipedians and I don't need a firestorm from editors irate with the info. - I've been wondering whether a checkuser to detect any Soupforone sleepers would be in order? Not sure whether this is allowed or possible in the circumstances, but thought I would at least raise it. Any thoughts? Cordless Larry (talk) 08:29, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Cordless Larry:Its a good idea...in theory, but the problem - which you'll see when you look through SPI archives - is that unless the accounts have been active in some capacity recently there's insufficient evidence for the SPI checkuser team to compare against the sock master. Sad as it is to say, this is a case where 9-1-1 and reporting on the fire is the standard operating procedure because installing asbestos to prevent the fire risks too much, or so the community judges. The good news (what little there is of it) is that editors and contributors to Wikipedia do not usually change their areas of interest or their common typing hacks (like words, phrases, etc), so allowing suspect accounts to edit usually results in them weaving enough rope that we can fashion a noose and hang them from it. Usually. For now I think it best just to keep low level tabs on the accounts listed and their editing patterns, if any of the given accounts suddenly throttle for no discernibly good reason it could be proof of a sock account taking up the slack for other accounts that have been shut down. Additionally, the next time we end up reopening an SPI case involving either editor we'll have another user list for the SPI people to compare to - though it will need to be noted loudly and proudly that those listed as having had interaction with soupforone or middayexpress are to be considered honest and legitimate users editing in good faith until evidence suggests otherwise. TomStar81 (Talk) 08:48, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- And on an asymmetrical note, we really ought to have a bot to do this sort of thing so that us humans don't have to tax our eyes and fingers doing it manually. We could call it DeceptoBot, since its job wouuld be looking into cases of deception <lol> :) TomStar81 (Talk) 08:55, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- I agree that it's likely that there will be more socks, and asking for a checkuser run for sleepers would probably be a good idea. Tom, I'm not sure about your methodology - lots of those editors are people in very good standing who don't specialise in this topic area. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 11:13, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Nick-D: Its an imperfect system, all this shows is who soupforone reached out to while he was here. You'll note that in the case of Middayexpress, I made that list, which proves your point: this information needs to be taken with a massive amount of salt. That being said, it does clearly and quickly suggest which accounts on Wikipedia would be most likely to take up the cause now that the the prior accounts are blocked, which could be useful information from certain standpoints (like checkuser runs). I mean to look at who editing Soupforone's talk page as well to see who talked to him while he was here, I'm sure that'll generate a few more names and additional controversy. (Incidentally, some names appear on both the Middayexpress list and the Soupforone list, which I guess is a coincidence, but still suggests that our guy may return and speak with the editors in question at some point, something else we could check against.) TomStar81 (Talk) 11:48, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- I think if you want to keep lists of names and use that to help you identify possible socks that's up to you. Whether or not it would be a fruitful way to conduct an investigation I can't really say but your diligence is certainly praiseworthy. I would however suggest using considerable discretion in using or asking others to use such a list. Many interactions will surely not be evidence of collusion and some (e.g. issuing warning messages) will suggest the opposite. In short, if using the list helps to identify suspects, great, but as Nick-D says above no few on the list are in good standing and no CU is going to run checks on such a list without clear and corroborating evidence of socking. I hope that is helpful. Ben MacDui 17:28, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Copyright
I came across this edit summary when going through AfD. I haven't looked at the copyright tool as of yet, but just as a policy/legal thing, your decline reason was incorrect if the content was copied from that webpage: all content is assumed copyright unless there is an explicit release under a compatible license. This is because the copyright law of the United States, which Wikipedia operates on, does not require that the rights holder publish with a copyright symbol. Things are copyrighted from the instant of their creation. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:44, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- And of course, diffs don't work for deleted pages. this was the revision that I was talking about. Anyway, like I said, didn't look at the actual content since the AfD was a clear delete, but did want to touch base on the point of who has the burden i.r.t. copyright. All the best TonyBallioni (talk) 02:50, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello, from the Portals WikiProject...
You are invited to join the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system...
The Portals WikiProject was rebooted 9 days ago, and is going strong. Fifty-two editors have joined so far, with more joining daily.
We're having a blast, and excitement is high...
Our goal is to update, upgrade, and maintain portals.
In addition to working directly on portals, we are developing tools to make building and maintaining portals easier. We've finished one so far, with more to come.
Discussions are underway about how to upgrade portals, and what the portals of the future will be.
There are plenty of tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too) on the WikiProject page.
With more to come.
We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.
See ya at the WikiProject!
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 03:09, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

- The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
- A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.
- AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new

This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash. - When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
- The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
- There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Thank you very much
The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.
By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.
I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.
Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.
If you would like to keep abreast of developments on portals, keep in mind that the project's members receive updates on their talk pages. The updates are also posted here, for your convenience.
Again, we can't thank you enough for your support of portals, and we hope to make you proud of your decision. Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 23:23, 25 May 2018 (UTC)
P.S.: if you reply to this message, please {{ping}} me. Thank you. -TT
Request for salted page creation

- Following a successful request for comment, administrators are now able to add and remove editors to the "event coordinator" group. Users in the event coordinator group have the ability to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit. Users will no longer need to be in the "account creator" group if they are in the event coordinator group.
- Following an AN discussion, all pages with content related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies, broadly construed, are now under indefinite general sanctions.
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
- The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.
- A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.
- In early May, an unusually high level of failed login attempts was observed. The WMF has stated that this was an "external effort to gain unauthorized access to random accounts". Under Wikipedia policy, administrators are required to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

- An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
- A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.
- Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
- Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June).
- Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:O'niel Cylinder.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:O'niel Cylinder.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.
ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:03, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
