Excellent racehorse articles
Just wanted to commend you on the excellent racehorses which you're creating. We don't have many UK horse racing contributors here, I dabble a little with the odd stub, but your articles are outstanding, well-written and well-referenced. If there's any help I can give you, please let me know, although you seem to specialise in horses from the 1990s, a period when I'd drifted away from flat racing.--Bcp67 (talk) 14:42, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. You can thank the economic recession for my articles as I find myself with rather more time on my hands than I expected to have at this stage of my career. I thought that British racehorses were under-represented, so I decided to do something about it. At the moment I am re-editing my articles to tone down some of the more effusive language as my Storming Home article had a NPOV template slapped on it. Once that's done I'll be looking at the other red links on the Cartier Racing Awards page.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 09:50, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Just a suggestion...
But there are a number of Quarter Horse WP:Featured Articles that you might like to investigate for examples for your UK Thoroughbred racehorses - Easy Jet, Go Man Go, Miss Meyers, Chicado V, Lightning Bar, and Barbara L. Hope this helps... Ealdgyth - Talk 22:17, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thankyou. Showing is better than telling. I've just learned how to link to section within a wikipedia article from studying Miss MeyersTigerboy1966 (talk) 22:41, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Authorized
Hi, thanks for the message about the Eclipse in the Authorized article. Do you think the article needs a bit more about the race? You can just go in and edit it if you like, no need to take into account whether someone has done a lot of work on the article - it's a free-for-all here!! I'm not really writing much about horse racing these days, I try to keep the results up to date where possible but never have much time to write long articles sadly. Keep up your good work! --Bcp67 (talk) 19:55, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Great work on Tb articles
Thank you for your great contributions. The Tbs and Sbs are in desperate need of improvement. I want to add more images of earlier horses as articles are improved, but will have reduced time to spend on editing for sometime. Cgoodwin (talk) 05:59, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
Colours
I've had a go at uploading the colours of Cheveley Park Stud, but the process doesn't seem as simple as it used to be! I'll leave it for now and try again another time. Keep up the good work - Zafonic (talk) 19:57, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for trying. The colours do make a difference to the articles, especially as it's so hard to get hold of usable photographs of the horses. I look forward to making some more holes in the big red walls soon, although at the moment I'm on stub expansion duty.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 20:40, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

- I've finally managed to upload the colours of Cheveley Park Stud and Maktoum Al Maktoum. I changed the format from svg to png. - Zafonic (talk) 18:10, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Fact check
Thanks for your message - always happy to glance through your articles and check the facts, links etc. I'm not into changing the style of what people write though, I'm not the best of writers and wouldn't make any alterations to what's written. --Bcp67 (talk) 11:35, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
DYK nomination
FYI, I've nominated Lemon Souffle for DYK; the nomination page is Template:Did you know nominations/Lemon Souffle. Nice article! Frank | talk 23:20, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for noticing. That's my first nomination. The spelling is correct by the way, it's "Souffle" not "Soufflé"-British racehorse names never use accents even when they are "correct".Tigerboy1966 (talk) 00:21, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
- Interesting note on the spelling. BTW, you can always nominate your own articles at DYK. You may not be interested in such, but it's definitely done. Frank | talk 00:52, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
- I had never thought of nominating articles I had written. Seems bit cheeky. Sorry to bother you, but if you had to assess the Lemon Souffle article, how would you rate it class-wise? I think it's a safe C-class, but I am no expert.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 14:02, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think it's cheeky, given that there's a very small window of opportunity to be included in DYK (5 days between creation and nomination). As for the Lemon Souffle article, I think it's great! I don't do "ratings", exactly, because really they require someone with knowledge of the subject material and articles similar to it to make a specific judgment in relation to those others, but in general I think it's a B, meaning it's certainly above average for most articles I see. Frank | talk 18:46, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
- In addition, on the point of self-nomination, submissions at DYK require that the submitter also review another DYK submission, so it's sort of a self-supporting area. (I've not been a fan of the frantic pace with which DYKs are rotated, but I seem to be in the minority on that opinion.) Frank | talk 21:51, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Good luck with the GAs
I think that these article should pass without any trouble, but it will depend on the reviewer. You should cetainly submit your own GAs and DYKs. Your standard of work has been well above that of many other articles that have passed. Best wishes.Cgoodwin (talk) 00:07, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've nominated Fantastic Light. We'll see how that one goes. You might like the article on Vinnie Roe, see if I've made any howlers on the Australian side of things. Fantastic Light review has begun. Try to be a little more careful though with spelling, I corrected loads of typos!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:10, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- sorry. I know it's not the reviewer's job to correct typos. "Racehore" indeed. Of course I should have sorted this out before nominating. It won't happen again.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 20:53, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- Good job. Can you do me a favour and find out if Red Rum was the sire of any notable horses? I want to see if he was bred. Red Rum was the first race horse I'd ever heard of and should be at least GA class by now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:42, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
- Like nearly all British and Irish jumpers, Red Rum was gelded at an early age, and so had no chance of passing on his genes. Even if he had remained "entire", I don't think there would have been much demand for him as a sire; pedigree is very important and in breeding terms Red Rum was, in a phrase I once heard, "by Not Much out of Bugger All". He did, however, have a long retirement: despite all the wear and tear of his racing career (110 races), he lived to 30, which is a very good age for a thoroughbred (roughly equivalent to 90 in human terms). I will have a look at the Red Rum article and see what I can do. Tigerboy1966 (talk) 06:26, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Nice work!
Hi Tigerboy - I just saw your GA nomination of Duke of Marmalade, and that reminded me that I needed to drop by and tell you what a fantastic job you're doing! It's great to see someone focusing on cleaning up some of the TB articles on Wikipedia, and taking them to higher levels of assessment. It's something that really needs to be done! Good luck on the GAN, and ping me if you need help with anything. Again, great work, Dana boomer (talk) 15:10, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for that Dana. I'm currently working on the British & Irish winners of the Cartier Racing Awards- I'm onto the sprinters now and there are not too many redlinks left. Ive got a few articles up to "Duke of Marmalade" standard, but I thought I would put them up one at a time as different reviewers will spot different things Tigerboy1966 (talk) 00:26, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

MFD
WP:Miscellany for Deletion. It's similar to WP:AFD. We have several different places for deletion discussions, based on the types of pages being discussed: templates go to WP:TFD, stubs to WP:SFD, categories to WP:CFD, redirects to WP:RFD, files to WP:FFD, articles to AFD, and everything else to MFD. This is largely done because of the significant differences between the various types of pages themselves, and the different policies and guidelines that apply to each one of them; the reasons that we delete or decide not to delete categories are very different from the reasons that we delete or decide not to delete a redirect, and both are very different from the reasons that we delete or decide not to delete an article. It's pointless to have separate deletion discussion pages for bad userpages (e.g. the ones that you're asking about), for Wikipedia-space pages, and for portals, so we've just lumped them all together at MFD. I know you're always open to a bit of guidance. You added Call Boy (horse) to the Call Boy dab page, but you did it as a piped link - it's not customary to use piped links or redirects on dab pages. Grand Parade
Thanks for taking on the Epsom Derby winners! I'd run across Orby and Grand Parade when I was researching the Belmont winner Algerine. It seems that Orby's grandam was the only thing the poor guy ever did right... I've always thought the "losers" have more interesting stories than the illustrious ones. I found some PD photos of Orby and his sire Orme. I'll upload them when I can find out more about the photographer (W.A. Rouch) for copyright reasons. Froggerlaura (talk) 02:19, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
- And I must confess that I'd never heard of Algerine before I looked up Grand Parade's pedigree. One thing I've noticed when trawling through the news archives is that racing people don't change: a hundred years ago they were complaining that genuine stayers were dying out and that top three-year-olds were being retired too quickly. And of course, every region was convinced that their horses were the best! Tigerboy1966 (talk) 16:47, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, I just approved the DYK hook for this article. The only minor issue I spotted was that reference #10 that was used to support the sentence "Indeed, according to the Daily Mail's correspondent, Grand Parade's only problem came when he attempted to jump over a road which crossed the course." isn't from the Daily Mail and doesn't seem to mention the 'problem'. This wasn't enough to hold up the nomination but I would appreciate this being fixed when you get the chance (or perhaps you can clear up my misunderstanding if that's the case). Thanks, Mikenorton (talk) 09:54, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
- Done. Just used the wrong source. It's a Daily Mail article reprinted in the Wanganui Chronicle. Now added as ref 16. I didn't know this was up for a DYK- is there a way in which a page's creator can be alerted?Tigerboy1966 (talk) 11:47, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Bloody but Unbowed
Thanks for your reply. I hope I wasn't too abrupt. I'm used to POV challenges that are in fact part of a POV initiative themselves, but your hesitation over the Bahraini Uprising title doesn't seem anywhere near falling into that category. The media's initial description of Protests to describe the events suggested something uncoordinated and perhaps unsustained and then the Gulf Coordination Council-led suppression of the pro-democracy demonstrations has perhaps given the impression that there was only a brief period of emergent unrest followed by a return to a militarily-imposed state of order. I guess that may be why you feel comfier with that original widely-used description of protests. I don't in fact find the WP article itself all that helpful, with its "synthesising" definition: "The 2011 Bahraini uprising ... is a series of demonstrations, amounting to a sustained campaign of civil resistance ...", since the demonstrations were the centrepieces of the campaign rather than the campaign itself. From February to mid-March the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain was at least as cohesive as in the other "Arab Spring" uprisings and the repression since then has not yet succeeded in crushing the opposition or dispelling the sense of a political "stand-off", hence my own willingness to consider the sustained campaign of protests legitimately described as an uprising, irrespective of reliable source use, such as by Frank Gardner. I hope you don't mind me bringing my comments on that specific issue here since it's a diversion from the main subject of discussion at the Deletion proposal. Blink Bonny
I think TB Heritage is confused. Sporting Magazine does not mention any other start before the Goodwood fiasco, and a Times article mentions that race as her "reappearance" on the turf. She did not run at any of Newmarket spring meetings and was withdrawn from the Chester Cup (much to the chagrin of the bookmakers:) and Ascot Gold Cup. After Goodwood, she was scratched from the Brighton Cup and was not entered in any of the October races. Unfortunately, the 58 Turf Register was not digitized with the corresponding Sporting Magazine, so there could have been an unpublicized wo or forfeit but it's unlikely that it would not have been mentioned elsewhere later in the season. Here are links for the racing calendars, sporting magazines, GSB and source page that might be helpful (pretty good coverage for early 1800s to 40s). Froggerlaura (talk) 01:36, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi, in case you hadn't noticed, I suggested an April Fools' Day hook for Santa Claus (horse). Such hooks tend to get a lot more page views. - ... that the 3rd Earl of Egremont (bust pictured), owner of Assassin (1782), Hannibal (1804), Cardinal Beaufort (1805), Election (1807), Lap-dog (1826), is the first person to ever own 5 winners of the Derby Stakes?
Just a suggestion. Feel free to ignore. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 18:11, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. I will take a look at this- I am working on Lap-dog at the moment. Tigerboy1966 (talk) 21:26, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- You're welcome. The Lap-dog wikipage is 5 days old today and needs to be nominated before its eligibility expires. I have posted Template:Did you know nominations/Lap-dog on T:TDYK with a 4x hook for now. The 4x hook can become a 5x hook when "Election" is created. Thank you. --PFHLai (talk) 06:40, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Cup
I have reviewed a number of your interesting articles about horses for DYK. Have you considered entering the Wikipedia Cup? You probably already know about it but I am not sure how the generality of editors get to find out that it exists. I came to know about it by chance, having happened to visit a talk page on which it was mentioned. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:39, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'm there. Fair warning: I am ridiculously competitive! Tigerboy1966 09:45, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Q: Bloomsbury DYK
Hello, Tigerboy1966. There is a question on Template:Did you know nominations/Bloomsbury (horse) about the reliability of the refs. Could you take that, please? Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 15:41, 29 January 2012 (UTC) It seems that Bloodlines.net is okay, but not Pedigreequery.com, according to Wikipedia talk: WikiProject Thoroughbred racing#Reliable sources. --PFHLai (talk) 16:01, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
- Replaced. Actually Pedigreequery (PQ) is 99% accurate, but it's user-generated, so we tend to use it as a temporary source till we find something better.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 19:35, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Race records for early thoroughbreds
Just putting this here for now; will c&p to project page when I'm clear. When summarising a horse's record for an infobox there are a couple of issues to look at. Before c.1840 walkovers and forfeited matches were quite common and I was wondering how we should count them. In the case of a walkover I think it should definitely count as a win: the race was scheduled, a horse turns up and completes the course to take the prize. The absence of other runners doesn't invalidate the event. Match races are slightly different. As far as I can tell, when an owner decided not to run his horse, and instead pay a forfeit, there was no requirement for the "winner" to complete the course or even turn up at the track. The forfeit was an arrangement between the owners, not a race. In some cases, the forfeit was paid because one of the horses had been retired or had died. For these reasons I don't think that forfeited matches should count towards the race record. On the other hand, contemporary sources always list forfeits received alongside other prize money, and don't seem to make a distinction, so there is a case for treating them as "wins". The problem would then arise of whether a forfeited match should count as a defeat: it would be slightlyy odd to say that a horse lost a race when they were retired or dead. Tigerboy1966 10:07, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I definitely think walk-overs should be considered as "wins" because the horse technically did come to the meeting and "run" the course. I don't think of forfeits as wins or losses because the horse was never given the chance to compete. They are more of a default of contract with a penalty fee. They do count toward total earnings but since there never was a race, IMHO forfeits should not be counted in career starts. I've had trouble with what to call defeats in match races. Is the losing horse still second or are they unplaced? Froggerlaura (talk) 18:44, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- I think that the "default" position should be that a horse who is beaten in a match race should be credited with second place. If the sources says that the beaten horse "broke down" then that should still count as a second place unless the context makes it clear that the horse failed to finish. Unfortunately, in the era we are currently dealing with, the sources don't always make this clear. Somewhere, Sir John Lade, is mightily amused at our confusion. DYK nomination of Spaniel (horse)
Hello! Your submission of Spaniel (horse) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 23:40, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, please take a look at the references section to see how I reformatted the references. Google Books is not the publisher of every book. You may want to reformat the references in this way for your other DYK nominations (and future articles). You can find the formatting template at WP:Citation templates. Best, Yoninah (talk) 00:22, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I know I rely too much on reflinks to do the formating for me. Bit lazy. Will try to do better in future. Tigerboy1966 00:28, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Azor (horse)
On 11 February 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Azor (horse), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the racehorse Azor won the 1817 Derby Stakes after being entered in the race only to act as a pacemaker for a more highly regarded stable companion? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Azor (horse). You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup
Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially began at the start of 2012 (UTC), and so you are free to claim any content from after that time. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points. This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn (talk) and The ed17 (talk) 12:06, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Eclipse Awards/American Champions
I see you have been inserting "unofficial" in front of what looks like pre 1936 Champions such as Sarazen. Please note that ALL are unofficial including the Eclipse Awards as they are just opinions from an assortment of for-profit newspapers and other associations. There is no national governing body for Thoroughbred racing in the United States. I have reworded the Eclipse Award article to reflect this. Your "unofficial" tags should either be removed or inserted next to all named including Eclipse Award winners. Hialeah Harry (talk) 19:04, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- Who gave out the awards before 1936? Tigerboy1966 19:39, 11 February 2012 (UTC) see reply on HH talkpage Tigerboy1966 19:52, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- Re your comment on my Talk page. I appreciate your input and am glad to assist in that you have limited understanding of American racing as per you statement that "I really don't have the knowledge of US racing to do a proper job."[1] So I will repeat what I put in the Eclipse article. There has never been an official award as their is no national body in the United States. (hence all the doping/banning issues) The TRA, DRF etc. are for-profit bodies/newspapers with no recognized authority over any racetracks. Thoroughbred Heritage states that. Read again what I wrote in the Eclipse Award article. It describes it in full and how many newspaper sources claimed Champions in the past, mostly from New York (who ignored/argued/fought with Maryland) as pre 1936 there was little or no racing in California and Kentucky tracks outside Churchill Downs were haphazard at best. Hialeah Harry (talk) 20:13, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for talkpage stalking, but the "awards" before 1936 are not classified as "Eclipse Awards" and like you say there were many differing opinions at the time as to who was the best horse of the year (DRF usually did this based on career earnings). I think Tigerboy's point for the "unofficial" tags in the pre-1936 horses is that there was not a single (or in some cases two) deciding entity that declared "X was better than Y" and extended the honour. Linking the pre-1936 horses to the Eclipse Awards (they are "official" awards, private company or not) in the infobox is misleading because we are saying that there was universal agreement. A better approach would be to include an "assessment" section (as Tigerboy has done on the Derby winners) to accurately reflect the differing opinions in the press. The early horses should not even be on the Eclipse Awards page because the "Award" did not exist at that time. Froggerlaura (talk) 20:54, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

- 1) Pre 1936 distinction? No, unofficial is unofficial whether it is DRF newspaper columnist(s) or New York Times newspaper columnist(s) doing something to get more readers. They are nothing more than an opinion and have no offical status because there is no Sport governing body to give it accreditation. That's what I pointed out in the Eclipse award article. Example so you can understand: The National League Most Valuable Player Award is offical because it is run by Major League Baseball who is the sole national governing authority in the United States and Canada. Similarly, FIFA is in fact a governing authority. 2) I'll repeat ALL (Eclipse Award included) are unofficial and as I stated above the "unofficial" tags should either be removed or inserted next to all named including Eclipse Award winners. The Award cited in the racebox does not link to the Eclipse Award article. Hialeah Harry (talk) 20:59, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

- distinction between the "Horse of the Year" for 2011 and 1892? No, Wikipedia only deals with facts and that kind of distinction by an editor would violate Wikipedia:POV. I actually don't undestand your questioning? When you insert that a horse was voted Champion, you must insert inline an acceptable reference which tells the reader the source. (SEE Wikipedia:Reliable sources) Hialeah Harry (talk) 21:35, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
tbc on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing. Tigerboy1966 21:54, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't have a "position", that would be an opinion which (I repeat) violates POV policy and the WikiProject Thoroughbred racing members don't have the authority to overule Wikipedia:policy. Wikipedia (I repeat) deals only with facts supported by proper references. It's cut and dry, if someone can come up with the name of the Sport governing body that oversees Thoroughbred racing in the United States then insert that with a link along with a link to where that governing body states they have sanctioned the naming of an annual Champion since whatever date in time. - That's fair, it's a mistake that has been made by many. Note that the issue is whether they were written this year, not this round, so, for instance, articles you write this round that are promoted next round are fair game. J Milburn (talk) 22:04, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 February newsletter
Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were Ruby2010 (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions), Miyagawa (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.
The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.
The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Still an issue, Just some wording. I'm still working on the review. I just keep getting interrupted.--Ishtar456 (talk) 03:21, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- 46 says "leading broodmare sire". In regard to the other, I know it can be inferred, but as I understand it, it needs to be explicit. Something like "That made him undefeated" (if that is what it says in the source). That is my understanding from passed reviews on my noms anyway. You can say "2+2" (with citations, of course) but unless the sources says it equals 4 you can't really say that it does, IMO. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.--Ishtar456 (talk) 19:25, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Colombo (horse) for DYK? More refs, pls.
Hello, Tigerboy. There is a request for more footnotes & refs from the reviewer at Template:Did you know nominations/Colombo (horse). Please add them as you see fit. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 06:32, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi: I think you slotted in the wrong ref at one point in this article. Otherwise I'm ready to sign off on it. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:24, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Assessment
Hey Tigerboy, I noticed you haven't put a "class" assessment on a bunch of the horse articles you've written. Not sure if WP TB racing has similar criteria to WPEQ, but the general rule is that you can assess your own articles, and given that you have enough sources and material for a DYK, that makes everything listed here at least C-class in my book, some stuff maybe even B-class. I did a couple for you, but figured it would be easier for you to just do your own,so wanted to let you know that. Nice work, too! Montanabw(talk) 23:03, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I usually leave the articles to see if anyone else assesses them and then do them myself if they are still unassessed after a couple of months. I did a big sweep of unassessed Tb Racing articles in December: there were about 2,000 of them at the time. Tigerboy1966 13:48, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
- I always just assess my own at the time I've completed my basic article, not enough worker bees out there, IMHO If I have a doubt I err on a lower status ;-) But no big deal, and kudos to you for the big cleanup of WPTB, you have so many horse biographies there, it's a daunting task and you are to be commended! You may want to check the project talk page there as I have put forth a proposal. Montanabw(talk) 01:32, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
DYK for Orwell (horse)
On 31 March 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Orwell (horse), which you created or substantially expanded. WikiCup 2012 March newsletter
We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well! Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.
Congratulations to Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to 12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!
It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. any suggestions ...
For a DYK for Americus (horse)? I'm drawing a complete blank for anything beyond "did you know that Americus was the ancestor of Mumtaz Mahal?" Or "did you know that Americus' registration in the General Stud Book was only allowed because he arrived in England 18 years before the passage of the Jersey Act? ARGH! Ealdgyth - Talk 21:29, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
- Nothing obvious springs to mind. The fact that he alternated between racing and stud duties for several seasons is pretty unusual. He had six great-grandparents rather than the standard eight. The fact that such an obscure racehorse figures in the pedigrees of Shergar, Secretariat and many others that a main page reader will have heard of. I'm pretty sure that Boss Croker renamed him after a political "club" that he ran (no ref on this, but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere). Anyway, I've added a couple of details about his British career. Tigerboy1966 22:26, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

2000 guineas
I added a comma to 2000 guineas in 'Panther' as the WP article 2,000 guineas uses a comma. Not that I feel stronly about it. Regards. Orenburg1 (talk) 09:59, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- Opinon is divided on the matter. I'll try to get a consensus at the Project page. Tigerboy1966 14:53, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- Just out of interest I did a search (I am just an anorak sometimes) and found 302 horse race related entries without a comma and 544 with a comma, say roughly 40/60 (incl NZ and Irish etc). I dont care enough to change any either way unless I happened to be at the page. Regards. Orenburg1 (talk) 15:14, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for writing up another wikiarticle and nominating it for DYK. Your nom template looks line, except that the hook wasn't wikified. (Done.) Nystrom GA
Thank you for the kind assessment! And in actuality, I would appreciate if you did review the GA nomination because you are not familiar with hockey. It is very easy to write an article "in universe style" and not realize that some may not understand all aspects of an article. Also, per your suggestion, that statement was already supported by the reference that followed the sentence (USA Today article from 2000), but I did remove the word "gritty" as it really does become little more than slang without being placed in context. WikiCup 2012 April newsletter
Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.
65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Matthewedwards (submissions) and Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.
An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Hello, Tigerboy1966. May I ask for a few more footnotes in Bruni (horse), please? Some paragraphs have none at this time. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 21:32, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- I'll have a go, but as I pointed out on the article's talk page, the online sources are very thin. The 70's are a dark age as far as British news is concerned. I could source everything from the books I have, but that isn't really my style. I will have a root around and see what I can find. This is a v busy week for horse racing: 2000 Guineas, Kentucky Derby etc. Tigerboy1966 22:29, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- No problem, Tigerboy. Thank you for trying. If good refs are not available, please remove the {cn} tags as you see fit. Thank you. BTW, I've just nom'ed Gang Forward, too. Happy editing! Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 04:13, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Well, I've filled in the cn gaps with the Mortimer book. It's my main starting source for 70's racing but I can usually find on-line sources to back it up. If you agf on the source it's fine, but using the same off-line source 10 times in an article doesn't look good. I will take another look at Gang Forward. It was an article I had in my sandbox for ages. In the end I posted in as a presentable start class article even though I wasn't entirely happy with it. Tigerboy1966 14:37, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the footnotes, Tigerboy. I have no problems with the use of off-line sources many times. It's not like you are using obscure books exclusively. It's too bad that the pages of this encyclopedia aren't accessible. Oh, well.... Gang Forward looks more than good enough for DYK to me. --PFHLai (talk) 15:53, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've been frantically updating or creating articles like Camelot, I'll Have Another, Maybe, Homecoming Queen etc. Also just posted Sixties Icon which has been a sandbox dweller for a while. There are probably a couple of DYK possibles in there (Homecoming Queen winning the 1000 Guineas by the biggest margin since 1859 looks promising). Also trying to get two of "my" articles (Tristan and La Fleche through GA reviews. When I get a chance I will do some QPQ DYK reveiews.

Just in case
Hi Tigerboy. I am sure that you will see my edits to the top 100 list. I just wanted to expand on my edit summary. First I tried to alter the tone of your initial edit but after saving that edit I reread the name of the article and realized that, since it was a list of US horses, the fact that it contained only US and Canadian horses is a natural outcome of the compilers project. If it was a list of the top 100 of the 20th C. for the whole planet it would look quite different. I hope that this line of reasoning makes sense for you but I will understand if it doesn't. I just didn;t want you to think that I was discounting what you tried to accomplish. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. MarnetteD | Talk 23:28, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I really shouldn't edit when I've had a drink. I get quite unreasonable and pointy. Tigerboy1966 08:12, 13 May 2012 (UTC) Just to be picky, the title of the list[2] doesn't mention nationality, which for me would suggest a "world" list. Of course it's nothing of the kind and doesn't pretend to be, making the wp article title more sensible while being technically inaccurate. Tigerboy1966 08:21, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply and the link. This brings up the question of whether we should move the article to match the name of the actual book and list. That would take the U.S. out of the title and would pave the way for reinserting our comment that the list seems to ignore horses trained in Europe or Australia. Since it seems that it is only you, me and the IP who prefers Secretariat who have the page on a watchlist I don't think we would have to request the page move. - Just did a little digging and found that the list was moved to add US to the title back in 2006 [3]. IMO that would justify even more a move back to the correct title. It would probably be a good idea if we could find a source that points out the North America bias but if we cant we could probably include a neutrally worded mention of it as long as we are aware that it might get removed. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 15:25, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
I will leave it up to you and if you do want to move it please do so with my full support. Undue edits
Hi. Don't undue edits before going on talk page and talking. In Easy Goer article, I have corrected the heading to say "Bloodhorse Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century", noting that it is only U.S. horses. Also the footing was muddy. Muddy footing is not difficult footing for every horse, some horses absolutely love and find no difficulty with muddy footing.Peteski132 (talk) 02:55, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Tigerboy. A DYK reviewer has asked for footnote(s) specifically about Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Would you have the refs, please? Hello, Tigerboy1966. I noticed that this nom template is not on T:TDYK. I thought I could give you a friendly reminder to post it on T:TDYK (like this), or the nom won't be considered. I could've done it for you, but I worry that you might be deliberately holding it back while you continue to refine the article, or something. Hope this helps. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 17:56, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I was actually going to send you a message asking why the nom hadn't appeared on the DYK page and if you could help me out! As I've said before, I just write the articles: I am a complete klutz on the technical side of nominations- don't write above this line, don't write below this line etc whenever I try a self nom I always find a way to screw it up. I will follow your instructions and try to correct my mistake. Tigerboy1966 18:03, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 May newsletter
We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.
This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Is that come to racecourse to watch a horse race is expense in Europe, It dosen't seems photos in Euporean racing Article. I seems there have many photos in Japan.--Horsemeister (talk) 02:16, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
- I certainly agree that the Japanese articles have much better pictures. British people at a racecourse are more likely to take pictures of their friends than pictures of the horses. Many British people think of a day at the races as more of a social occasion than a sports event. Tigerboy1966 08:10, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
The list
Hi again. As you have noticed the vandal activity on the "Top 100" list has picked up today so I filed a WP:RFPP a few minutes ago. I requested temp semi-protection but also asked them to consider indef protection. I don't think we will get that but who knows. If you want to add anything to my request please feel free to do so. Enjoy watching the Belmont this weekend. MarnetteD | Talk 02:39, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, you read my mind on this one. RFPP isn't a place I am used to but I added a comment supporting the request. Looking forward to the Belmont, although of course we will have to wait till September for the real Triple Crown. Tigerboy1966 13:06, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi again again. You will see that the page has been protected until June 15th so we have a little respite from the nonsense. User:Ged UK did say that we could update him if the vandalism continues after the protection is expires. You will have to keep me up to date on the UK's triple crown as we get zero coverage of it over here. I am getting ready to watch the first two games of Euro 2012 later this morning. Cheers. - Thanks, I have a horrible feeling that "they" might move on to other Horse racing pages but we will win. User:Cuddy Wifter and I are having a similarly rough time protecting the Varenne article at the moment, but that's not a deliberate vandalism issue. Triple Crown ooops: Good job I updated and expanded Union Rags given the news today. England for Euro 2012! or Ireland. or any underdog. Tigerboy1966 19:53, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- I've also started Dulahan. Now just watch a 90/1 outsider bolt in. Tigerboy1966 17:26, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

3RR
If edits are not real vandalism (see wp:3rr) the 3RR limit does apply. Some of your edits to Union Rags could be considered content disputes and reverting them would have a 3RR limit. True vandalism is not limited see WP:NOT3RR. I would suggest staying away from Union Rags and fixing it in 24 hours. (I found out the hard way link) Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 00:37, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- Seems fair enough. As long as other editors are watching over the article (and they are), there's no point sullying my hitherto unblemished reputation (pomposity alert!) by getting involved in a short-lived edit war. thanks for your advice. Tigerboy1966 00:47, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Good work
Just wanted to tell you that you are doing good work. I'm being a little careful on the articles related to the Belmont and that trainer because of BLP, not because I have any fundamental disagreement with you. I just have endured too many wikiwars and FA gauntlets to be Ok with using a tabloid as a reliable source, even if it's probably accurate. Montanabw(talk) 22:21, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
Keep the Black Caviar article relevant.
Please refrain from using Wikipedia to further your own opinions. Regardless of how passionate you are about Frankel, and how much you want to disparage Black Caviar, how much a different horse won a different race by is entirely irrelevant to an article about Black Caviar. Please keep the information relevant to the races that Black Caviar contested. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.211.13.35 (talk) 18:21, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

- The idea that I am some kind of Frankel groupie will come as a surprise to anyone who follows my edits. I happen to think that Black Caviar is one of the greatest horses that ever looked through a bridle, and have gone out to bat on her behalf on the article talk page, but facts are facts. And I will state them and reference them with reliable sources for as long as it takes. Tigerboy1966 18:33, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
- Regardless of what your opinions are, the Black Caviar page is not a forum to compare Black Caviar against other horses. It is for information pertaining to Black Caviar herself and her races. 95.211.13.35 (talk) 19:16, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
- That's why I have added references from reliable sources and explanatory detail to the article. I have added 4000 bytes worth of content to the article today. All of it sourced and referenced. You may have missed the point that I was trying to make, which was that BC ran far below her best at Ascot. Tigerboy1966 19:31, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not the place to 'make points'. It is only for information about the entry.
- The details of other horses times, much less other horses races are not relevant to an encyclopedia entry regarding Black Caviar. You can use that information and sources for those horses pages.95.211.13.35 (talk) 19:38, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
- I was adding factual, fully referenced information which would allow readers to draw their own conclusions. There was no editorialising. If you can show that any of the information I added was inaccurate or inadequately sourced, feel free to remove it. Tigerboy1966 19:54, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
- It may well be factual and fully referenced, but the times and races of other horses are not relevant to the Black Caviar entry. - The form of horses is always relevant. If x beats y by five lengths the form of y is relevant to the article on x. Otherwise the win would have no context. Whether y was a donkey, or a BC Sprint winner, is relevant to an article on x. The phrase "common sense" does rather spring to mind. Tigerboy1966 20:24, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry but that's a major stretch. As I said before, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and the entry is about Black and HER form.
- The context of much of your contribution makes it clear that you are using Wikipedia to make 'points'. This is not what Wikipedia is about.
- I respect your opinion about how good Black Caviar is or isn't, but Wikipedia is not the place to compare horses, their times or their winning margins.95.211.92.234 (talk) 04:25, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

And thanks to you too. You've done a lot of good work on the article. WikiCup 2012 June newsletter
Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

Carry Back
Thanks again Tigerboy. I appreciate your compassion for thoroughbred racing. I was shocked to see the job you did on Carry Back's story. It was so comprehensive. Most of what I wrote was from memory, my books and a few websites I found. And 50 years can dull some memory! It was such a "rags to riches" story. The only other horse I made contributions to on WIKI was Kelso. Now there's a great topic for you to expand on. Let's face it, no other horse will ever do what he did...win five HOTY's in a row. I wasn't his biggest fan at first as he was CB's adversary, but I grew to appreciate him after CB retired. I'll never forget being at the 1964 Aqueduct Stakes when he beat Gun Bow, who he was trashed by weeks earlier. Rumor had it Kelso at 7 was through. But he proved the experts wrong. The crowd that day was one of the loudest I ever heard. Right up there with Secretariat's Belmont, which I was also fortunate to see live. Anyway old Kelso closed out that year with the still world record on dirt for 2 miles of 3:19.1 and a 2:23.4 1 1/2 mile Washing DC Int'l on grass, and his final HOTY. And the list of horses he beat over the 6 years. It's safe to say he beat more good horses than any other thoroughbred. And then there's Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens. The Chief. The "Giant Killer". Beat all the greats since Kelso. Buckpasser, Secretariat (twice with two different horses), Skip Away...the list goes on and on. He just won another stakes this past Saturday with a 39-1 shot beating the 1/4 favorite. At 83 years young, still getting to the winners circle.
Best of luck to you, Tigerboy. And "may the horse be with you"!
Allen Joyner
PS: One last thing. You may be interested in a great reference book I use constantly. It's issued by the The Daily Racing Form, titled "CHAMPIONS...The Lives, Times and Past Performances of the 20TH Century's Greatest Thoroughbreds" It covers every champion horse from 1894 to 2010 in it's latest edition. The PP's are especially wonderful, as you can trace the horse's every race. I highly recommend this terrific book. And you can sure win a lot of arguments!

- The problem with Kelso is that with my editing style it would end up 60-70kb long (which is too long). One fact that I stumbled upon when researching American Horse of the Year was that Kelso came within one vote of a sixth award in 1965. I might have a go at Beau Purple next: I had actually never heard of the horse until I started on Carry Back, but he was obviously exceptional on his day. Roman Brother is another horse of that era that I've had in my sights for a while.
- Very impressed that you saw so many greats "in the flesh". The best horse I ever saw "live" was Dayjur at my local course, Haydock Park; he was probably the best European sprinter of the last fifty years, although he came up agonisingly short in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
- The key to wikipedia is getting the hang of using references; once you master that, you're away. In the meantime you would be very welcome to join up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Horse racing. Tigerboy1966 20:58, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes I must learn how to use WIKI correctly. I know my son can help me if I can get him over here! Ah yes...little Roman Brother. Believe it or not, he was one of my favorites too. He was hardly 15 hands if I remember right. He was one tough little gelding. I can look up his PP's if you need some info. He split the HOTY honors in 1965 with the wonderful filly Moccasin. Duel HOTY's. So I guess the vote was a close 3 way battle. Kelso was rounding into form, won the Stymie, then got hurt. He simply did not run enough in 1965 to win HOTY.
Yes, I remember that BC Sprint. Dayjur was the favorite. Didn't he "jump his shadow" deep in the stretch and got nosed by the excellent filly, Safetly Kept? It was a great race.
AHJ
Tigerboy,
Beau Purple was the legendary trainer Allen Jerkens first "Giant Killer" thoroughbred. He started out as a sprinter, but with Mr. Jerkens masterful training, taught the colt how to harness his speed over a distance as a 5yr. old. In the Summer of 1962 it was assumed that the leader of the handicap division would be between the reigning 2-time HOTY 5 yr old Kelso, and the popular and now mature 4 yr old Carry Back. But Beau Purple "upset the apple cart", defeating both Kelso and Carry Back on 3 occasions each, twice on 1 1/4 mile dirt races, and surprisingly in a 1 1/2 mile race on turf. All of these victories were in major stakes races, all carrying $100,000+ purses. Jerkens went on to defeat so many great champions with good, but usually less than great thoroughbreds and became the youngest trainer ever at the time (45 years old) to be inducted in the Thoroughbred Hall Of Fame in 1975. Two years earlier he defeated Secretariat by a length with a colt named Onion at equal weights in the Whitney, then seven weeks later trounced Secretariat by 5 1/2 lengths with Prove Out, who actually carried 7 pounds more than Secretariat in the Woodward.

Tiger....("Autumn" or "Fall?) I don't see a problem with either of those terms. We use both here in the States. I prefer autumn, but fall is used more commonly in conversation.
I would however use "National Thoroughbred Hall of Fame" rather than "American Hall of Fame" in your articles.
I looked over what has been written so far for Roman Brother. In the Two Year Old section: "Despite losing his undefeated record when beaten by Sophia's Boy and Hurry to Market at Garden State Park..." This is only partially true. According to my trusty aforementioned "Champions" reference book PP's, RB finished second to Hurry To Market in both Garden State racetrack starts on November 1 and November 9, 1963. Don't know where Sophia's Boy came from.
As I stated earlier, he was a tough little horse, but maybe just shy of being a great one. He has yet to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He finished his career of 42 starts with 16-10-5 record and $943,473 in earnings. If you need any more info concerning his PP's, etc., do not hesitate to ask.
Tiger....RB's 2 yr old campaign consisted of only 6 races. A maiden win, then two allowance victories before winning the Champagne and finishing second twice in the aforementioned Garden State races to Hurry To Market. If you need dates, track etc. of those first 3 starts above, let me know. BTW, Hurry To Market was voted 2 yr old champ, finished second in his only 3 yr old start, got hurt, and never ran again.

3rd. Oct.7 (Allow.) Aqueduct 7F 1 by 3L
Absolutely, the horses back then ran a heck of a lot more, and were bred for STAMINA and durability. Not any more. SPEED SPEED SPEED is all they seem to care about now. Too bad. Here's a fact that is hard to believe the way they race today. Did you know that Triple Crown winners Omaha, Count Fleet, Assault and Citation actually ran in a race in between the Preakness and Belmont? Either a stakes race or allowance..the trainers wanted a race in them as 3 weeks was too long a break. With the Triple Crown on the line. Amazing.
Will try your Wikitip...thanks.

No other info. He very well may have been injured and retired. Certainly not for breeding!
Yes. in breeding is a problem. It's getting to the point that almost every entry nowadays in the Kentucky Derby can be traced back to Native Dancer. Either on the male line, Raise a Native/Mr Prospector or through his daughter Natalma, dam of Northern Dancer. A list of his descendants reads like a who's who of the last 60 years. 3 Derby winners, so many champions, it's amazing. The Dancer definitely needs more written in WIKI than is currently available. He had a rough trip in the 1953 Kentucky Derby, and missed by a diminishing head of being an undefeated Triple Crown Winner. He won 21 of 22 races in his career. When you take in consideration his fantastic racing record and his success as a sire, I always believed he should be ranked even higher than his #7 ranking on the Bloodhorse Top 100 thoroughbreds of the 20th Century.
Native Dancer was scheduled to cross the Atlantic for a start in the Arc de Triomphe during his 4 yr old campaign in 1954 but got hurt and was retired. Too bad.

Mighty Mite of the Turf
Hello, Tigerboy. I thought I should let you know that I have posted Template:Did you know nominations/Roman Brother. Nice expansion. I considered using his nickname as hook material, but I thought perhaps more than one newspaper article is needed to support the sentence "Contemporary newspapers nicknamed him the ..." in the article. If you have more refs on this, could you stick in some footnotes there, please? If you don't, never mind. It's not a big problem. Thanks, anyway. Happy typing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 05:00, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
- yes there are more "Mighty Mite" refs out there. I only added the information quite late in the day because the phrase kept cropping up. I'll sort it out later today, after work. Tigerboy1966 06:30, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

1886 Epsom Derby
Cheers. Yes I noticed this, it was difficult to find the fifth place horse as well. It seems particularly difficult to find the trainers of the runners. Also I wasn't sure whether or not to use a 0 for those with unrecorded finishing position, as obviously form wise this usually used for a finishing position of 10+. Do you have a particular opinion on this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edwarddutton (talk • contribs) 11:57, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 July newsletter
We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.
Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! Good luck! WikiCup 2012 August newsletter
The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
- Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
- Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
- Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
- Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
- Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
- Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.
However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), Ealdgyth (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), The Bushranger (submissions) and 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.
On the subject of next year, a discussion has been opened here. Come and have your say about the competition, and how you'd like it to run in the future. This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Hello, Tigerboy1966. FYI: The Evening Post article currently used as Ref. 3 in the Sun Stream wikiarticle says Sun Stream's victory in the 1945 1,000 Guineas gave Lord Derby a sixth win in the race, but the Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby wikiarticle lists 7 wins, and I can count "17th Earl of Derby" showing up 7 times in the table on the 1,000 Guineas Stakes wikipage. DYK reviews
I fully realize that you are not required to do DYK reviews as long as PFHLai continues to nominate for you, but I know that you know how and have voluntarily done some in the past. I am asking you to do some now.
We are struggling to get enough reviews at the moment: Allen3 has reviewed nine in the past day to keep us from getting dangerously low. At the moment you have two in the queues, eight on the nomination page (two of which have been approved), and another 11 that have run on the main page in the past two weeks. I hope you will consider helping us, as we have 231 active nominations, only 45 of which have been approved, and 29 empty slots between queues and prep areas with another 8 becoming vacant in 95 minutes. Thank you for your consideration. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:26, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
