File:Jean-Pierre Blackburn.JPG

Hi, Could you please help clarify the authorship and the copyright declaration of Commons:File:Jean-Pierre Blackburn.JPG? It is somewhat confusing. In one place the description page credits you as the author giving the rights to the public domain but in another place it credits another person as the author. Thank you. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:37, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Simon. I've lived in and around this area for a little over twenty years and, candidly, I have never heard anyone but a real estate agent describe it this way. The phrase seems to have been coined as a way to make the stretch between Kingston Rd and the CN tracks seem more fashionable, rather like saying "breakfast nook" instead of admitting a kitchen was too small to eat in. Is the any evidence the term enjoys any currency outside of real estate ads? Virtually all the GHits returned on the phrase are ads for houses or apartments for sale or rent. -- Rrburke (talk) 01:21, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Kehrli new POV dispute

You were involved in an arbitration a couple years ago. 1 A nearly identical behavior and dispute has arisen. 2 I was wondering if you could pop in there and try to clearly define the scope and purpose of Wikipedia to Kehrli 3 as apparently the outcome of the last dispute and the resulting ban did not make such things clear. To summarize: He/she has chosen a different obscure unit-like scaling procedure and is trying to synthesize a well defined unit based on selective use of a few literature examples in combination with the widely accepted rules of metrology. Very elegant work that might be a good idea, but novel nonetheless, and thus not for Wikipedia. I am not a primary participant in the dispute. He/she has also been going over much of the material that he/she was banned from (for 1 year) and is persisting in the course of action that he/she was banned for now that the ban is expired. I have not been policing these actions and the pages have fallen into subtly novel/POV pages.--Nick Y. (talk) 20:06, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Simon: we all agree that Wikipedia needs to use "standard notation". We just do not agree what standard notation means.
In short: They are pushing the jargon of a part of the mass spectrometrists, which are roughly 10'000 people worldwide. I am defending the terminology that is the international consensus, and also is used by some in their field (which I can prove).
Kehrli (talk) 19:35, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Kehrli is using his interpretation of the tertiary sources IUPAP red book/IUPAC green book/ISO 31 to justify rejecting all of the scientific literature on Kendrick mass (dozens of publications in the past decade). The new unit of mass that Kehrli has defined is original research and inconsistent with multiple verifiable sources. --Kkmurray (talk) 22:12, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
I am not rejecting any scientific literature on Kendrick mass analysis. I am just saying that most of it is written in a sloppy jargon that is not understandable by the wider public because it is not in line with the terminology according to the scientific consensus and that in Wikipedia we should use the terminology of those papers that are actually in line with the consensus terminology. Kehrli (talk) 23:11, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Kkmurray is lying: the unit in my article Kendrick (unit) is defined in this recent publication: [4]. Kehrli (talk) 23:23, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Streets

Don't forget my Burnview Crescent article. John Street was decided at an afd, and now you're going to undo that, add one or two facts, and leave it, instead of simply adding those facts to the list of roads in Toronto article? Your fight seems to be more for the principal of everything having its own article, and less about the merits of the individual subject and question. Are all of the road articles thus created about Toronto notable by default? - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 20:20, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Give me a Globe and a Star article specifically about Burnview Crescent and your point would be valid. Articles are evaluated based on the quality of the sources, and the sources fro John St are pretty good. - SimonP (talk) 20:24, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
There's plenty of sources on Sheppard Street as well. Two Mike Filey columns, an entry in Toronto Street Names, and lots of connection with Jesse Ketchum. Sheppard Street does not deserve and article. Niether does John Street. The facts can easily be added to its entry at List of roads in Toronto (don't worry about size, that article will be split as soon as the dust settles). - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 20:27, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Two columns, and a book entry? Sounds like it definitely meets GNG. I look forward to reading that article someday. - SimonP (talk) 20:30, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
It's not notable. Its a street with a name that can be traced. I don't even believe a single building fronts onto it today. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 20:32, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
If, as you say, several a book and newspaper editors have decided that an article on Sheppard St is worth running in their publications, then that meets Wikipedia's inclusion standards. Just as we don't decide TRUTH, we also don't decide what the would considers notable. Now if the articles are not actually about the street, but rather about the person who the street is named after, that's a different story. But if there are three credible sources with articles on that street, it should definitely have a page. - SimonP (talk) 20:36, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
It's about the name of the street, just like most of the entries in Mike Filey columns that describe Toronto streets, and just like most of the entries in Toronto Street Names. These discuss the names, but make zero mention of whats on that street or whether the street itself is important (and Sheppard Street is NOT important; it's one of the most minor insignificant side street in the core). As such, they belong in an article about Toronto streets, and not in their own independent article. By your logic, we should split out all the individual pokemon articles. Just because something is notable does not mean that it MUST occupy its own page on the encyclopedia, especially when most of the information is inter-related. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 20:48, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Could you point out multiple articles in a major newspaper or academic journal on a Pokemon that's currently merged? If so I'd full support unmerging that one. From the sounds of things the articles you're talking about are not about Sheppard St at all, they are about the fellow it's named after. In that case I wouldn't consider them as justification for an article on the street. This is very different from the three sources on John, which are all distinctly about the street itself. - SimonP (talk) 20:57, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
No, but I'm certain you could find independently published books that detail every single Pokemon... Something analagous to how Henry Scadding described the entirety of Toronto in 1873 and published that. It is ok to merge topics into larger articles rather than spinning them off on their own. Two paragraphs is a stub, not an article. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:02, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
A source going over every single Pokemon or building is a directory, and Wikipedia specifically is not a directory so those aren't fully valid sources either. - SimonP (talk) 21:08, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Likewise, a directory and tourist guide of the shops along many Toronto streets, which happens to include a few sentences that are almost verbatim of the entry in Toronto Street Names, is not a valid source to indicate the notability of the street. If a building on a street is notable, it should have an article; not the street. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:14, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Agreed that would be a poor source to assert notability. Are there any pages that have only this as a source? - SimonP (talk) 21:16, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Between several of these types of sources, yes. Parliament Street and Victoria Park come to mind. Parliament street is notable because its named after the parliament buildings? No. The parliament buildings are notable, not the street. Anything that discusses where they were located must make reference to the street, because that is an identifiable location. Anything actually written about the street is more or less identical to the entry in Toronto Street Names, yet again. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:22, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
If that were the only source for Parliament I would agree, but there are also articles about other important sites along the street from the Distillery District to St. James Town. There is one on the former Parliament Streetcar. Combined these are more than enough to build an article around. - SimonP (talk) 21:39, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

If you're going to keep editing and reverting the live template, I suggest you test out your changes in a sandbox first. You can transclude in place of the live template on any articles, copying the codebase for the template to your sandbox for your testing. Hey there! I just thought I bring your attention to WP:AR1 as I believe it could use an update for articles requested but not created from more than a year ago. There are like 5 items left (the Islam terms should be redirected but I am not bold enough to do it myself) so I hope if you have the time you can add a whole bunch of articles on the page. I would imagine that the actual amount of articles older than 1 year would be quite large so feel free to use your best judgment on what to add (things older than 2 years maybe?). When moving a page then redirecting the old page to a completely different article, please use the "What links here" link for the old page and fix the links. Otherwise, you end up with, say, at least 70 articles and various talk, user, and user talk pages that were supposed link to the article about the British Shadow Cabinet linking to a redirect to a general article about shadow cabinets. -Rrius (talk) 06:28, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thank-you,

Image 10 Navy.JPG

I just wanted to check if you were the original owner/taker of the photo 10 Navy.jpg.

If so I think you've made a mistake with it. That building is actually 35 Mariner Terrace, not 5 Navy Wharf Court. They're right beside each other and look almost identical with 35 Mariner being taller. I know that's 35 Mariner as I live in the same complex and the top of 35 Mariner is different to 10 Navy. The very top of 35 Mariner has a curved aerofoil shape for the entire length of its roof as is seem in this photo, and the top of the elevator shafts starts much further north than on 10 Navy. File permission problem with File:Michael Chong.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:Michael Chong.JPG. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Swansea, Ontario boundary map

Hi Simon:

Happy new year! I was checking on the map for Swansea, Ontario, as I am in the process of creating electoral district maps for the area going back to the 1914 redistributions both federally and provincially. In doing the research, I have become well acquainted with the former city limits of the old City of Toronto, which remained consistent in the west-end from at least 1909 until the 1998 amalgamation. The map that you have for Swansea is very good, but has a notable error: the eastern border never followed the western border of High Park, as one might naturally assume. The real border since at least 1909, started at the top of Bloor St. West, and just east of Wendingo Way, going in a straight-line down to Lake Ontario. This boundary put the western portion of High Park within the Village of Swansea until 1967. For verification, please see the City of Toronto's Annexation map, found at the City of Toronto archives. I was wondering, when you have the time, if you could correct the map and place the eastern border in its proper location? Great work otherwise, and I really like the series of maps you created for Toronto neighbourhoods.

All the best for 2012. --Abebenjoe (talk) 19:48, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear SimonP,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

 • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
 • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
 • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
 • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
 • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar ([[User talk:Jaobar|talk — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.34.167 (talk) 21:32, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

World Factoring Yearbook

I'm leaving this message as you're listed as a current participant of WikiProject Business. I was informed yesterday that the current World Factoring Yearbook (circa £150) is now free for download as an ebook. It's a matter of filling out this form. I'm not sure if you'll find this useful as a reliable source, but I thought I should let you know that it's freely available online. I apologise in advance if this doesn't interest you! The article John 20:13 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Doesn't appear notable as a distinct topic

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Non-free rationale for File:Shadow Keep.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Shadow Keep.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Dear Admin,

I created a page for mr. rahul easwar today on wikipedia. Mr. Easwar is an author and activist of well repute in our country.

I am a very late wikipedian and dont know the reasons of the page being deleted. The reason cited was suspected promotion. The links i had provided were all accurate. I can provide you with even more links, that will again prove that Mr. Easwar is a person identifiable as a notable personality by even wikipedia standards, as detailed in the website. i avoided all those links for brevity.

Mr Easwar is spokesperson for Sabarimala, which is the one of the largest pilgrimages (ref from forbes traveller, google search and wikipedia itself), and this can be substantiated by links from national media (mentioned below) in India and also from the wiki page of the family of the supreme priest of sabarimala.

Tantri_controversy

Now, the presence of Mr. Easwar in the national media can be substantiated with any number of references, as he is a panelist for Social/Political discussions in the national media, in channels NDTV, Times Now,CNN-IBN, Aaj Tak, 9XM, and other channels.

Please let me know what else i should provide for the page to be re-instated.
