... gan yr hen Gymro; rwy'n gobeithio eich bod wedi cael gwyliau Nadolig gwych ac rwy'n dymuno 2019 heddychlon i chi!
That is Welsh and translates to:
Spicy hot wine for you from the old Welshman; I hope you have had a great Christmas holiday and I wish you a peaceful 2019!
Thank you for your excellent work on the 'pedia.

Sincerely, Gareth Griffith-Jones (contribs) (talk) 11:22, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gareth Griffith-Jones: Google Translate tells me a proper response is: Diolch yn fawr iawn. Ac i chi hefyd. My own kin are more likely to have responded (in an accent not unlike that of Blanche Dubois): "Thank you kindly, sir. I wish you the same as well." Likely with the offer of a glass of rye whiskey. Or maybe moonshine, depending on the relative. :-)
Happy editing into 2019 and beyond! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 11:39, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please check out "Happy" once more, for a smile, and sharing (a Nobel Peace Prize), and resolutions. I wanted that for 1 January, but then wasn't sad about having our music pictured instead. Not too late for resolutions, New Year or not. DYK that he probably kept me on Wikipedia, back in 2012? Social reformers

[edit]

Hi Ser. I just created Category:American social reformers and Category:British social reformers. I then moved the appropriate women out of Category:Social reformers into these subcats, and did minor editing, talkpage updates, Wikidata updates, as needed on those articles. The main cat is still full of people who should be moved into the newly-created subcats or into Category:Indian social reformers, which was previously created by someone else. I was wondering if you felt inclined to do this cat refine work via AWB, but no worries if you are busy with other things. Let me add that if you felt inclined to create Category:Germany social reformers, Category:Australian social reformers, and/or Category:New Zealand social reformers, there are a few articles which would could populate those subcats. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:59, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why cannot a TED talk be used as a reference?

[edit]

Dear Ser Amantio di Nicolao, Why were Russell Targ's two TED talks (one banned, and one approved) deleted from his article? What can I do to insure there inclusion? Can you offer any direction? Or are TED talks just taboo? Please reply soon. Miistermagico (talk) 06:22, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Miistermagico: I did not remove the references, so I don't know the rationale. I would recommend contacting the deleting editor for more information. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:23, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

...was, as far as I know, a male singer, composer, and vocal teacher. You have twice put him into female categories... is something not set right? Easy to correct, of course, as long as someone is watching the page. Brianyoumans (talk) 19:37, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Brianyoumans: He has been placed in the category Category:English operatic sopranos, that's why. I'm not sure it's quite apposite, given the description - we must have a category for treble singers, which is what I would assume he was. That's the source of the issue. Thanks for spotting - I honestly wouldn't have expected to find him there. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:46, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I believe he was a notable boy soprano, that's the problem. Brianyoumans (talk) 19:48, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Brianyoumans: Well, we have Category:Boy sopranos, which isn't associated with Category:Sopranos in any way, it seems. That ought to fill the bill, it seems to me. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:49, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, good! I was just going to suggest that as a fix, but of course it already exists. I probably put him in the wrong category to begin with. Well, mystery solved. Brianyoumans (talk) 19:51, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Brianyoumans: Don't worry about it. Category trees are often...less than intuitive, shall we say, in my experience. I've made more errors than I can count in my time here. I can go ahead and make the requisite changes in a few minutes - meantime, happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:53, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Women artist sub-categories

[edit]

Why do you keep moving women artists into "women"-specific sub-categories and leaving male (and presumably intersex/non-gender binary) artists in the main category? It just sends the message that a default artist is male and women are a sub-category. I created Category:Native American male artists because of your Category:Native American women artists, but it's a time suck to do this for every category where women are removed and men are left. Yuchitown (talk) 17:01, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Yuchitown[reply]

@Yuchitown: I'm not moving anyone into the subcategories. Copying, yes, but not moving. Every woman in one of the women artist categories should be in one of the proper diffusing subcategories as well; if I've made the mistake of doing otherwise please let me know and I'll fix it. And yes, I have also been trying to do so for men, as well, when I have the chance - see Category:American male painters and the like. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:06, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There's Category:Women potters, there's no Category:Men potters or Category:Male potters; there's Category:Women ceramists, there's no Category:Men ceramists or Category:Male ceramists, etc. etc. Why do women specifically need to be subcatted by gender when it's clearly not universal? Yuchitown (talk)Yuchitown
@Yuchitown: It is universal. It's just going to take a long time to catch up, especially as there are so few editors working on the subject. If nobody else does, I'll likely get around to creating those categories when I have a moment to populate them. As to the two categories you mention, I created neither of them. I would recommend taking any further, broader questions to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:49, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Or perhaps maybe all women artists don't need to be shoved into a subcat? Yuchitown (talk) 23:40, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Yuchitown[reply]
@Yuchitown: Address it with Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, then. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa.

Hello,

I’m King, a current Junior at Stanford University. You’ve spent many years on Wikipedia and you also mentioned that you have created bots to do mundane work. I am curious what you think about the current system of flagging articles and issues and how it could be optimized. Maybe Machine Learning tools could be implemented? I can also be reached at iamking-at-stanford-dt-edu. (Formatted weirdly to protect myself from bots) Would love to hear from you either on Wikipedia talk or via email. Thank you for your time!

P.S. I grew up using Wikipedia and would love to have the opportunity to contribute back to this community-powered knowledge base. Speaking with you would be greatly advantageous. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingalandydy (talkcontribs) 04:43, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Drummers

[edit]

You seem to have added the "drummers" category to a lot of artists who aren't known as drummers ([1][2][3]...) Can you please check your script and undo all these changes? Thanks! Fram (talk) 07:29, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It looks as if you simply took your list for the prevuious category (guitarists) and added "drummers" to the same people, which in most cases isn't correct of course. Fram (talk) 07:36, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Fram: Really odd. It's not quite a one-on-one match, as I did some spot-checks, and they were accurate. I'm not quite sure how it happened - let me do a little fiddling around to see what went wrong. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 09:34, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

CBS

[edit]

The most prolific editor of Wikipedia is honored as one of "The 25 Most Influential People on the Internet" by Time, covered by The Washington Post, and now interviewed by CBS News, yet we still don't have an article about him on Wikipedia? I read the AFD discussion, and things like DOB aren't required; e.g. see Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight. IMHO, the joke is on Wikipedia that your bio is missing from it. This isn't exactly a replication of the Donna Strickland/Nobel Prize fiasco, but there must be a logical reason why I'm thinking about that. Anyway, #proudofyou. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:42, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosiestep: Thank you kindly *blush*. I certainly don't think that I belong in the same category as Donna Strickland...far from it. But I'm grateful for the kind words, always. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:18, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jumping in here to extend my congratulations as well. I agree that you deserve an article given your press coverage but, given your previous vote to delete, will not be the one to begin it. Well done for the publicity, but at some point, someone like you should actually correct the assertion that "One man is behind 1/3 of what's on Wikipedia" because that's clearly completely fallacious. This is an encyclopedia, and any kind of claim that you are responsible for 1/3 of the content is [citation needed] territory. I mean, enjoy the five minutes, but to do so without acknowledging that the headline is bullshit is somewhat disingenuous. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:20, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@The Rambling Man: I actually had no idea what the headline would be until the piece went live. I might drop a note to the producer about that when I'm home. It bothered me a bit, but by now I'm used to the press getting things wrong. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:57, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
TRM: If it had been me, I would have assumed that any Wikipedia editor with a month of experience and an IQ north of 90 would have recognized it as hyperbolic click-bait not requiring my disavowal. If someone had then come to my talk page and accused me of being somewhat disingenuous, my reply would have been considerably less polite.
My brother emailed me a link to the CBS article with the comment, "You’ve no doubt encountered this guy." I informed him that wasn't the case, illustrating both the vastness of the wiki landscape and my narrow scope of interest. I also said, "Poor guy, I doubt he can interest anybody in a game of Trivial Pursuit." ―Mandruss  02:50, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Late to this part: I am happy that I met you, Ser Amantio, one of the first people here, attracted by a user name from my favourite opera, and acknowledged in 2012, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Quality Article Improvement/Precious#Ser Amantio di Nicolao. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:14, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mandruss: Eh...Wikipedia editors might have seen it for what it is, but to be fair there are people taking it at face value: I've looked at a couple of the Reddit threads (which, really, I shouldn't be doing) and there are a smattering of posts going down that path. Which are being set straight by other readers, yes...even so, the point's well-taken. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:57, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If TRM meant that you should do said acknowledging off-wiki for the benefit of the wiki-ignorant, I retract my comment. That wasn't how I read it. ―Mandruss  07:43, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I must agree with TRM here. I find the entire thing to be misleading. Also, leaving out that millions of your edits are automated edits really changes the narrative, don't you think? In reality, it drowns out the amount of great work you do perform as it is all buried under pages and pages of needless category shuffling. Nihlus 09:51, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Nihlus: Well, you're not wrong. And I did discuss AWB in the interview...I even offered a demonstration of how it worked. Unfortunately barely any of it made it into the final product. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:36, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Want to add my congratulations further! It's well deserved. You once said

I remember something I read, once, in Opera News about the great Tatiana Troyanos. Here was a woman that had every right to complain at the Fates over her lot in life...she was abandoned by her parents to an orphanage, and she battled health issues for many years before dying of cancer at 55. (I remember reading that selfsame article about her and being amazed at what she had overcome.) And yet she remained ever gracious in her career and her professional dealings. The writer of the article, I remember, recalled assisting in a Metropolitan Opera performance of Giulio Cesare in Egitto, in which Kathleen Battle was singing. Battle was then in the throes of some of her worst behavior, and she was really letting people have it over trivial matters. And the writer said that when the curtain fell, he was about ready to tell her off, when he felt a tug at his elbow. It was Troyanos - she took him aside, smiled, and said, "Don't. It doesn't matter." It can be so tempting to get wound up over the least little thing around here. But every time I do, somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind...so deep that I feel her presence rather than hear it...I'm sure Troyanos is reminding me, too: "It doesn't matter." @Eddie891: Funny - I was just referencing Battle among some choir friends the other night.
I think of her often, Troyanos. Sorry that I never had the chance to see her live - one of the few real regrets of my opera-going career I think. Glad I can keep her memory a bit brighter. :-)
Thanks for the kind words - glad you liked the piece. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:27, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Question, how did this interview come to happen? Did someone from CBS find you? Enigmamsg 02:29, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Enigmaman: The extremely brief version: a piece about me ran in the Washington Post (my hometown paper, basically) back in October. It dropped on a Tuesday afternoon. I left the office, and by the time I was ten minutes away on the way to choir rehearsal, I'd had an e-mail, a missed call, and a text message about it. Fun, being hit by that in DC rush hour traffic. :-) And it all sort of went from there. We filmed in late October.
The longer version is...not that much longer, to be honest. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:00, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Late to the party, here, but I just saw the CBS headline this morning. My first thought was "I bet it's that Ser Amantio guy." Sure enough! Props to you and many thanks. You do good work, and you're a valuable member of the community. Also, I hope the attention has been a positive thing for you ... we all know the internet has a dark side. I just wanted to send you some positive vibes and a big thanks! - Kzirkel (talk) 12:14, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Kzirkel: Positive for the most part, yes. There have been some rumblings, but they've been fairly minor. Otherwise things are reasonably pleasant, for which I count myself considerably lucky. Well done on the recent publicity - it’s great for the project. I do wish outlets like CBS wouldn’t make it seem like magic though. One of the anchors said at the end “so should I email him if I have a correction to make?” Onceinawhile (talk) 10:46, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Onceinawhile: Yeah...I've had some discussions offline about that with a couple of friends. That and some other things. Have you considered opening a Patreon account?

[edit]

Hi there, I saw the interview with you from CBS and I was very impressed. Since you've contributed so much good to society, I think you SHOULD be rewarded for it. I'm not saying it's bad you do all of this for free, not at all, but I think people with the means and desire to do so should be able to show their appreciation of your work in monetary units. That's how I think all people should be paid personally but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, why not open a Patreon? Dapperedavid (talk) 14:05, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is that a maybe? You'd earn so much from it man, especially now that you're becoming more well known. I just want to see you rewarded with money, or as I call it liquefied presents. You deserve a decent income for what you do, imo, and what better way to decide that income than voluntarily by lots of people that consume the product of your labour? You deserve it bro, that's all I can say. Sorry if this is annoying. Dapperedavid (talk) 14:18, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dapperedavid: That's me playing my cards very close to my vest. Which is all I'm going to say on the subject. Maybe it's a tad bit too coy, but there you go. @Gofreddo: Honestly? In good conscience I don't think I can advise you, given that I am the subject of the article. I would ask Theroadislong for advice, frankly. Also, I might take a look at our essay on assuming good faith - I don't think it's fair to accuse another editor of jealousy in this. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:29, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: The beach...nice. I remember the beach. Meantime it was 19 degrees here this morning on the way to work.
I can create some of the categories you're talking about - Category:Chorale cantatas for sure - but I'm not sure how useful subcategorizing the Bach cantatas would be. There are only 209, so the category won't be growing that much larger. Personally, I think it's easier to break them out using lists rather than categories. (Although a subcategory for Bach's chorale cantatas might be useful. Perhaps the Christmas cantatas as well.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:48, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's snowing here, one day later ;) - The list articles are all there, but - may their author forgive me - pretty complex. Just to see at a glance which other cantatas were in the same cycle might be interesting. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:53, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: I'll take a look at the lists. I still might be wary of the categories, though. The other categories I'll try to create in a little while. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Jason Gilardi requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.

I have added this to your TP because you are the #2 editor of the page, the #1 editor and the #3 editor (creator) have both disappeared. SashiRolls t · c 23:46, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't think so, but I figured I'd better tell someone associated with the article. That authority control ref citing Wikipedia is weird though. Why is Wikipedia using crowdsourced MusicBrainz as authority control? No worries, I'm just curious... is it normally better than in this particular case? SashiRolls t · c 01:56, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@SashiRolls: It seems to me that MusicBrainz is more than just a biographical site. Check out Artur Kapp, for instance - the biographical information is taken from Wikipedia, but there's also a discography, a works list, a list of relationships...a lot of other things. That being said, I don't know how the decision was arrived at to use it in the authority control template. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:01, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and congrats

[edit]

I just found your CBS piece...from the front page of Youtube! And, to be clear, that front page recommendation wasn't somehow targeting me because I'm into Wikipedia or whatever. I was logged out, and I had absolutely nothing resembling any sort of Wikipedia-inclined activity for the algorithms to have been working with. The video just blew up! The YouTube upload has gotten over a million views and counting, and the comments are overwhelming adoration. This media attention you're getting is awesome, and well-deserved. I'm happy for you. Congrats, but more importantly, thank you for all you've done.  ~~Swarm~~  02:50, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Swarm: Ha. Top-rated comment is "Teachers HATE him. Click here to learn his SECRETS." Beats the video-game playthroughs I've been watching lately. (What? Super Mario World was a huge part of my childhood, and nobody's gonna take that away from me.)
Thanks very much for the kind words. This has blown up a lot more than I expected it would have, to be perfectly honest. If it focuses some worthwhile attention on the project, so much the better. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:56, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi from a cold Carmarthen in south Wales! What roots of Welsh Heritage do you have? Saw that you've been to Wales. Cwmcafit (talk) 23:21, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwmcafit: No Welsh roots, I'm afraid - my people were Anglo-Scots, English most likely. (There is some evidence that my original American ancestor was Scottish, but records are sparse.) I visited Wales when I was a kid; we were in western England and decided to visit Tintern Abbey. One of these days I want to go back and spend some time in Cardiff and Swansea, among other places.
One of my favorite figures from Virginia history, though, is Catesby ap Roger Jones, whose father was Thomas ap Catesby Jones - I've always loved the fact that they kept some of the old nomenclature. (Thomas is buried not too far from me - that's my picture of his grave in his article.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:22, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations from me, too. I actually didn't see the CBS interview until coming here to look at your Talk page. You recently added categories to a couple of pages on my Watchlist, and I remembered seeing your name before, so I came here out of curiosity. Some Talk pages are good for counting sheep when sleep won't come....especially the firebrands who have lots of controversies going on. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find your story and all the great contributions you have made. Your interview gave a glowing image to us Wikipedia geeks, you are so grounded, with a lovely family, and your singing is heavenly! I'm glad you are getting deserved attention for all your hard work and it was so nice of you to describe the social community here, it is so true. Too many updates to wade through

[edit]

My watchlist is groaning with your edits, most of which are the addition of various categories, which I do not consider worth the overhead. I do not want to see them, and I end up culling the number of articles on my watchlist more aggressively as a result, or just giving up on WP for a time. However, I do not want to filter out edits marked "minor", as some of the worst edits are so marked. I already exclude bot edits--is there a way for you to mark your edits thus? Or is there some other solution to remove category edits from my watchlist? --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 23:08, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Hobbes Goodyear: It appears that you can, in fact, remove category changes from your watchlist. All the way at the bottom - "category changes" is an option in the last section of the dropdown menu. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:31, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Alas, it does not seem to work, at least for ordinary page edits that happen to update the categories. But thank you very much for the reply! I appreciate your courtesy. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 03:57, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Hobbes Goodyear: Certainly - sorry I couldn't be of more help. I haven't really set up a watchlist in years - I don't use mine much.
For what it's worth, I'm about done with musicians for a while - I'll be moving into a couple of other disciplines. So your watchlist should be getting a respite for a while. :-) Happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:37, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a reason this should not be handled by a bot? Nihlus 05:45, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Nihlus: Are there instances where categorization such as this has been handled by a bot? I'm not aware of anything comparable, at least in people-by-occupation categories. I have heard rumors that some of it may be taken over by Wikidata, but that's a while off yet. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:06, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Categories can be easily handled by bots, especially those that use AWB. Nihlus 06:12, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Nihlus: Perhaps, but for one thing I don't know anything about coding one. And it seems to me we've been doing fine using AWB for category edits for a while now...not just me. Is CBS's "edited a third of all articles" strictly accurate?

[edit]

Hi, This may sound horribly ungrateful, and it's really not meant to be - I'm doing some fact-checking for different media. Recently, the CBS News story about you said there are roughly 6 million English Wikipedia articles, and you've edited about a third - so about 2 million different articles. It also says you've done about 3 million edits in all. So that means for most articles, you've only edited each once. It surprised me that your categorising, spelling and grammar checking, and so on, has only changed most articles just once. Do you know where the 'one third' figure came from (is it possible they've taken a figure from some time for all your edits, compared it to the total articles, and just assumed you edit each one only once)? Thank you for all your work, anyway. Peace Makes Plenty (talk) 21:45, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Peace Makes Plenty: Don't worry, you don't sound ungrateful. :-) (You're not the first to comment on the headline, and to be honest I was a bit surprised by it myself when I saw it.) I'm not sure, strictly speaking, that it's completely accurate, and I'm not sure where the number has come from. But the first I saw/heard of it was when the piece ran, and I had no input in its writing.
I'd be happy to elucidate further via e-mail, if you wish to ping me that way. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:02, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Ser Amantio di Nicolao, for what it's worth, you have edited 1,091,964 distinct pages in the article namespace, of which there are 5,801,386. This is appx 18.82% of ns0. Shoji Meguro AWB edits

[edit]

I'm not sure if you ignoring my reverts on the Shoji Meguro page or simply aren't alerted for some reason, but your AWB edits there are breaking the formatting of four film links that use special formatting for technical reasons (# is apart of their official title). Check here to see what I mean. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 19:27, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dissident93: I'm not ignoring the reverts, honestly - but no other article has this problem with AWB, as far as I can see. So if I don't remember to remove it from my list (which I don't, because my short-term memory is crap) then it gets caught up. Sorry about that - I've tried to eliminate the problem by making the edits with HotCat, which for some reason doesn't break the article in the same way. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:24, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see. The only reason it's an issue is because # is not that common as a part of an article's pagename. Is there any type of code that could be applied over them so AWB edits would ignore it? If not, it's not that big of a deal as long as it's caught by somebody and manually fixed if it occurs again. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 20:27, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There may be a code - I'm not sure. I'll try and play around with it this evening and see what I can figure out. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:33, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Record producers

[edit]

Hey! It maybe has been a while since you did these (given the amazing amount of edits you do :) but I've noticed you've added "record producer" categories to a lot of musicians who are not record producers. "Record Producer" is a job title with specific tasks and I think it may be being confused with those who document their music work via recording - ie, a recording artist. If this helps, the Record Producer page defines a producer's tasks as:

  • "Supervisor from pre-production to final product of recording"
  • Co-writing
  • Arranging and orchestration
  • Artist coaching and management

If an artist only works with their own group, only writes their own songs, is credited mainly as a musician (or even only as an electronic musician), then the most appropriate place is their instrument/composer/band categories. There are sufficient electronic musician categories for those who do not produce. Thanks! Actaudio (talk) 05:47, 15 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Actaudio: Thanks very much - I'll bear it in mind for future. Feel free to remove it anyplace you find it in-apposite...or let me know where and I can do it myself. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:07, 15 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Template talk pages

[edit]

Hi, isn't it usually better for the talk pages of template doc subpages to redirect to the template talk page? – Uanfala (talk) 18:46, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Uanfala: Dunno. Hadn't seen anything indicating that when I did my research. If there's a guideline would you mind terribly pointing me towards it? Thanks very much! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:01, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Template documentation makes a mention of it. And that's also the common practice: I don't remember ever seeing a doc subpage have a separate talk page: it has fewer watchers than the template talk page and it's hard to imagine why there would be a need for its talk page content to be kept separate. – Uanfala (talk) 19:05, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi,

Fixing pings like this doesn't work. Pings only work if put "fresh" on a new line. Adam9007 (talk) 21:57, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Adam9007: Thanks for letting me know. These "ping" things are still kind of foreign to me - back when I started around here we basically shouted at each other's talk pages if we wanted anything to stick. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:25, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why oh why?

[edit]

Why are you creating so many talk pages "I'm part of project xxx" - this is ideal work to be run by a bot, so that recent changes and watchlists are not flooded - such as you are doing now. — xaosflux Talk 03:53, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Xaosflux: There's no bot doing it, and I don't know how to code one. I've been asked to get myself named a bot before - what would that entail? I've heard of the option but never explored it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:54, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You could create a second user account such as User:NicolaoBot (or whatever) and get a bot flag assigned (at WP:BRFA) for tasks such as "adding project tags" - then edits made under that account (which you would not use for "normal" things like adding content) would have the 'bot' flag added to the edits - by default this hides them from watchlists and recent changes. — xaosflux Talk 03:57, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: I'll look into it, thanks. Never realized there was a distinction. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:00, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need to know how to program either - many bots just use WP:AWB that you are already familiar with. Too see an example of what gets filtered out look at this view of RecentChanges - these are normally hidden. Basically flagging an edit with 'bot' (which you have to be a "bot" to do) means this is something minor and repetitive, and it likely isn't worth your (anyone's) time to review. — xaosflux Talk 04:23, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: Thanks very much for the explanation - would you believe that in 13 years I've never had an explanation as to why being a bot would be useful? Watchlist stuff never would have occurred to me - I don't use mine overmuch, and keep it fairly rudimentary. Some things to chew on this week. regarding AWB...which I'm halfway-intent on setting aside for a while shortly, anyway, as I turn back to content creation. That, we shall see. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:37, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Circling

[edit]

Hi, do you never get fed up of going round in circles lighting up people's watchlists? Eg: your current run doing things like this is going to lead to you doing another run recategorising them as, say, Category:19th-century English philanthropists. Then Category:19th-century English educational philanthropists, Category:19th-century English religious philanthropists etc. You seem to be making work for yourself and pissing me off, again. Practically no-one outside Wikipedia cares about categories anyway, and they're of very limited use even to those of us inside it. - Sitush (talk) 04:56, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Sitush: I doubt very much the categories you are talking about will come to pass. Regardless: I think categorizing philanthropists by century will prove to be useful. You're welcome to take the categories to CFD if you disagree. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:58, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No point taking it there because the project is owned by obsessives and you're among those who subscribe to it. Are you telling me that you will not in fact ever create something like Category:19th-century English philanthropists? The entire categorisation system is broken and creating more categories will not fix it. - Sitush (talk) 05:02, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Sitush: I have no plans to create such a category, but I will never promise "never". About anything. Again...if you disagree with a category I have created, take it to CFD. I am more than happy to discuss it there. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:06, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Stockton

[edit]

Hi, I've recently been going through articles within Category:Sportspeople from Stockton-on-Tees and have seen a few discrepancies which have arisen from an AWB run you performed in 2015. This added Category:Sportspeople from Yorkshire to those articles (see e.g. this edit). The problem is (AIUI) that Stockton-on-Tees itself lies within County Durham, as does most of the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees, but there are parts of the borough that have historically lain over the border as part of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire (Thornaby-on-Tees, Yarm and Ingleby Barwick). For this reason, Category:People from the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees is a child of both Category:People from County Durham and Category:People from North Yorkshire. I'm guessing your AWB run looked for all cats below Category:People from Yorkshire. This is just a heads up, on the off-chance that you work on anything similar in future. Thanks, Nzd (talk) 12:27, 23 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Nzd: Thanks for the alert. If I do do another such set - not sure I will any time soon, as I remember having some issues at the time - I'll tread more carefully. Such things are a good learning experience, I find. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:05, 23 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I missed your AMA but I had a few questions that have always bugged me about Wikipedia

[edit]

Question 1

[edit]

Why is American English and Commonwealth English on the same subdomain (en.wikipedia.com)? You can see I had a run in with that here https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Talk:Concorde&diff=prev&oldid=211349247#Tyre_versus_tire.

I really feel like there should be a gb.wikipedia.com and us.wikipedia.com per https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/ISO_3166-1_alpha-2.

war.wikipedia.org and ceb.wikipedia.org do not conform to https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes. I guess my question is what demands a subdomain? And why not separate US and GB? Geolocation is pretty straight forward these days. Donkdonk (talk) 08:35, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) @Donkdonk: Having two English Wikipedias would mean that we would need to create every article twice, and maintain them in parallel, an even bigger task. The differences between national varieties of English are not significant enough to worry about, and MOS:ENGVAR covers most situations. If you're serious that you think that two Wikipedias would be beneficial, put up a draft proposal at WP:VPI and see if others think that it's worth escalating to WP:VPR. But it may be worth checking through the archives of both pages first. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:50, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Redrose64: Thanks a ton for the info links! Donkdonk (talk) 20:42, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Question 2

[edit]

Mobile browsers redirect https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Pants to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trousers (again Commonwealth English...) as expected. Why on Earth is there not a redirect for desktop browsers from the en.m.wikipedia.org subdomain to wiki.riteme.site?

These are technical questions. If you don't know, can you direct me to the correct place to ask?

Thanks, Donkdonk (talk) 08:35, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Donkdonk: I'd have a look around Wikipedia:Village pump for technical questions. Although I'm sure both have been addressed at some point in the past. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 09:13, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
At the very end of each page in mobile view there is a line of text "Content is available under CC BY-SA 3.0 unless otherwise noted." Under that there are three links; the third one is "Desktop". --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:52, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

First time writer would appreciate your help

[edit]

Steven,

I am an aspiring Wikipedia writer and have an article that has been previously rejected, awaiting review.

I am seeking your help because the past two reviewers I worked with have left Wikipedia.

My article has been ready for review since January 15. I know the current wait is quoted as seven weeks. I'm two days short of six weeks.

I'm really excited to start documenting the history and artists in the New Age music genre. This is an under-covered music genre that I find interesting... as a music lover yourself, I'm sure you might understand how I am fascinated on the evolution of this genre.

I've started with Jeff Oster because his unconventional crossover use of brass. Here's the page I've submitted: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Draft:Jeff_Oster

While I'm certain you are probably too busy to review the article and mentor me yourself (though if I'm wrong, I've deeply appreciate your help!), I'm wondering if you can point me directly to someone who might be able to help.

Thank you for your consideration,

--Meta in MA (talk) 23:53, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Broad Rock Manor

[edit]

Hello Ser Amantio. I have been looking at the article Broad Rock Manor, Virginia, which you started some years ago. I believe Broad Rock may actually be a neighborhood in the city of Richmond, rather than an unincorporated community in Richmond County. The coordinates listed in the article suggest the same. However, I am not sure whether "Broad Rock Manor" is the correct name for the neighborhood. The List of neighborhoods in Richmond, Virginia lists "Broad Rock", and Broad Rock, Virginia redirects to this list. A map of community associations in Richmond also shows the "Clopton/Broad Rock Civic Association".

So, I am not sure if "Broad Rock Manor" is another name for the "Broad Rock" neighborhood in Richmond city, or is a different neighborhood in Richmond city, or is actually an unincorporated community in Richmond County. I'm wondering if you can shed more light on this?--Mojo Hand (talk) 17:22, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mojo Hand: Sorry - all I know is what GNIS turned up. I can ask my father, a Richmond native, but he hasn't lived there in years. There's also a fellow at the office...let me see about asking him tomorrow. He might know of a neighborhood by that name. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:46, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I saw that you added Category:Year of birth missing (living people) to this BLP article. According to the Infobox person template instruction:

| birth_date = <!--... for living people supply only the year with {{Birth year and age|YYYY}} unless the exact date is already widely published, as per [[WP:DOB]]. -->

About adding only the year, WP:DOB states: "list the year, provided that there is a reliable source for it."
But there is no advisory in the category page itself about the need to verify DOBs with reliable sources -- and fan sites & wikis are not reliable. This BLP, along with many others I am aware of, has been subjected to unsubstantiated DOB edits by fans (and trolls). Shouldn't the category's lead also include that the year of birth must be verified? Pyxis Solitary yak 04:18, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Pyxis Solitary: I suppose it can be added. I honestly don't see as it will make a bit of difference - I doubt very much that casual editors who are adding a DOB are going to be looking at the category header for that kind of information (especially as it's a hidden category). But I don't see any harm in it, either. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:48, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. :-) I will add the info (it may assist editors who are well intentioned but not well informed about DOB = source). Pyxis Solitary yak 07:03, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jerry Trimble

[edit]

Hello. You just edited via AWB Jerry Trimble, tagging it with a Year of birth missing (living people). It looks like there was a mass rollback after vandalism, or some other event in January 2018 and the birth date was removed at this edit. https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Jerry_Trimble&diff=next&oldid=822950980. I'm not sure why, it looks like a mass rollback after block evasion. I'll leave it up to you to decide how to proceed. This type of edit is out of my comfort zone. Happy Editing, Ser Amantio di Nicolao! P37307 (talk) 03:46, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@P37307: Thanks for the ping. I've left it as is for now because I'm not convinced of the reliability of either source that was used. I'd like to know where they get their data. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:10, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AWB

Austin Mahone

[edit]

Hi, I saw that you're the one that edited Austin Mahone's bioagraphy. I tried to click the edit button to re-edit it but you made it private so I can't. If you could, would you please edit it that way his correct full name will show up at the top of Google search when people Google it? His full name is Austin Carter Mahone, not Austin Harris Mahone. Harris is Jake Miller's middle name, not Austin's. Austin inherited the middle name Carter from his late father. I'm not sure where you learned that his middle name was Harris but that's incorrect. I know this because I've been following Austin throughout his whole career since his YouTube days in late 2010. I've been a dedicated fan since I found him and have heard and seen him say his middle name repeatedly, in videos and on Twitter (I have a fan account for him — @MahonesCrush) Michalla (talk) 15:35, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Michalla: I am not the editor who protected the article - that would be NeilN, if you wanted to talk to him about protection levels. As for the middle name issue, Harris is sourced in the article, to this site: [6]. If you wish to change it, I suggest you provide a source and post it on the article's talk page for discussion. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:04, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Missing DOBs in rodeo

[edit]

Hi, I saw in my Watchlist that you've added a category for missing DOBs to rodeo competitors. Namely, Kaycee Feild and Richie Champion. As they are active competitors in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, they have cowboy profiles on their website. I was able to add their birthdates and birthplaces to their articles and remove the category. I can keep doing that, it's no problem. But if you care to do this yourself, it's pretty easy to check and add.

Go to [7] and look for their profile alphabetically. The profile almost always has the birthdate and place. Note that if you are editing the article of a Professional Bull Riders competitor, there isn't one good place to find their birthdate.

Also, since I'm here, I recently wrote two articles in a new area to me. My mentor montanabw speaks so highly of your category skills. Perhaps you could check the cats over in them when you have time? Thomas D. Mangelsen and Grizzly 399. Thanks...

Happy editing whatever you decide! dawnleelynn(talk) 19:42, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dawnleelynn: Thanks for the sources - I'll try and have a look when I have a moment. I'll be ducking out of the house fairly shortly, but I'll have a look at your articles tonight and see what (if anything) needs categorizing. And I'm always happy to help with categorization - if you have questions for me, just let me know and I'll take a look at the articles.
Happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:33, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks not a rush. I'll probably take you up on the category offer. Also, I work mainly in the rodeo articles and know the rodeo category structure. If you have questions about either, I probably know the answer or how to find out. It's shame the PBR profiles don't track the birthdates anymore. dawnleelynn(talk) 20:56, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dawnleelynn: Looked at 'em both, and your categories are fine - I just did a little bit of tweaking. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:26, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tweaks, I believe every bit is a help. You found a couple I missed. I also learned that you should italicize titles in section headers today. Good stuff, :) dawnleelynn(talk) 07:19, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A goat for the G.O.A.T!

[edit]

Ciao!

I saw your interview on CBS and was absolutely fascinated and inspired. Started making contributions to this place because of you!! While I was casually surfing about I saw that many of my friends have a Wikipedia page so I thought I'd create my own! A quick search, however, led me to discover that that's against the code of ethics and so I opted not to. Nonetheless, I'm still enamored by the idea of actually having a page on here and I'm curious to know what deems you worthy of such a great honor. I made a website just so I'd have some sort of online presence (www.MarwanRefaat.com) but I don't think that has too much of an effect. So... What's the secret sensei?!

A valediction,

Marwan Refaat :)

Uli (design)

[edit]

Hi! One of the students I oversee noticed that the content in the article Uli (design) looked to be taken verbatim from another website (I also ran it through Earwig's Copyvio Detector, Miami Biennale. I'm not really able to clearly determine which came first, the Wikipedia article or the website, so I figured that I'd ask you about it. I'm leaning heavily towards them copying us, but wanted to make sure before I officially say anything one way or another to the student. (They're interested in completely re-working the article and wanted to know if any of the content was keepable or not.)

I don't really associate you with copyright issues, so I figured that this was just a case of a website not crediting us. I did want to make sure though - better safe than sorry, you know? ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 21:34, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ReaderofthePack: Apologies - I set this aside on Friday evening to respond, and then forgot. To answer your question: here is the last version I edited, which was based on the linked page from the National Museum of African Art. I'll cop to some close paraphrasing in places (always a difficulty for me, especially in art historical sources), but no plagiarism. Best of luck to your student - I look forward very much to reading the final product. And I'm glad to see some interest in expanding topics on African art. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:25, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Club women

[edit]

Hi there. I created the category this morning, and populated it with >60 biographies but there are literally hundreds of women (clubwoman or club woman) who still need to be tagged. If you have time and inclination, would you please finish the task using AWB? But if you're busy with other things, no worries as I can do it... there's no rush. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:50, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick response. Any time in March (Women's History Month) would be fine. I know there are a lot of them. Frankly, I can't believe that until today, there wasn't a category for this as Women in Red had done a Clubwomen event in October. And now, oh dear, I'm having second thoughts that maybe the category should actually be named "Clubwomen" instead of "Club women". Thoughts, SusunW? --Rosiestep (talk) 17:25, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Rosiestep the most frequent occurrence is indeed clubwomen, but I also find club women. I am not fluent in categorization, but is there a way to make a redirect, because both are common? SusunW (talk) 18:04, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Skuja Braden

[edit]

First, thanks for all your good work on categorization, and your other thoughtful edits on articles I've created!

Here is a question related to the "missing DOB" category: how can it be resolved for a duo like Skuja Braden, where there are two artist collaborators with different birth years already listed in two separate infoboxes? (Someone had listed the year of their initial collaboration in the lead, but I removed it today to reduce confusion.)

For comparison I looked at Laurel and Hardy and discovered a separate Template:Infobox comedian with the note "for groups - see Template:Infobox comedian for usage". Maybe that's what we need for artist articles? I am ignorant of the coding issues related to Wikdata, but I assume there must be a way to capture more than one date of birth from the article text?

Cheers! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 19:05, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Grand'mere Eugene: My practice has always been to add the categories for both to the page. So...both birth dates, both death dates (when necessary), both nationalities, etc. I don't know that there's a particular rule about it, but that's how I recall seeing it done long years ago, and I have tended to follow the principle in times since. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:35, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick response, but I' still confused as to why Skuja Braden is in the missing DOB category? Their birth years and nationalities are in the article text and also in the infoboxes for each one, not in the lead paragraph (they formed the collaboration but it was not, strictly speaking, "born" in 1999). What am I missing? Thanks! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 21:17, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Grand'mere Eugene: Well, because of the way in which I checked categories, it turned up as not having a DOB, which is why the script added that category. It's no big issue - I can fix it manually, and will do so shortly. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:07, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

hi happy vernal equinox someone just erased all of the McEvilley essays and claimed it was not a CV? he also changed book to works not realizing this author published books of his own as well as having his essays included in books of others or published in journals etc. I undid his edit and left this reason note below. is there a more proper form for this list of publication? they really are used by teachers especially a lot to find copies online etc. it seems adding journal names and dates would be over doing it since the titles are the most economical search tools thanks lbc ps I also wonder if you can direct me to instructions for how to add wiki reference links in the "see also" section. there are many philological references especially to his work on Sappho that would be nice to add in future as well as some seminal art critical references.--no rush Lblackcloud (talk) 19:25, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the list of essays as it isn't an encyclopedia's job to list complete sets of minor works - Wikipedia is neither a CV repository nor a catalogue (WP:NOTCAT). I already restored the "Books" heading, I removed it in error. The essay list should not be there and Lblackcloud should not have edit-warred it back. Cats wanted

[edit]
Jordan|March
... with thanks from QAI

I miss Category:Vespers settings, which would at least inlcude Monteverdi's and two by Mozart. They all contain psalms and the Magnificat, for which we have cats, Category:Psalm settings and Category:Magnificat settings. Once I'm here: Category:Nunc dimittis settings, please, many. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:22, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also thanks for what you do! - Click on March to see some travel pics. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:27, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: I created Category:Vespers settings, although it's a bit skimpy yet, with only three entries. I'm not going to create Category:Nunc dimittis settings just yet...most of our settings are in conjunction with Magnificats, and given that that's the traditional coupling I don't see the need to divide them in category space, sorry. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:53, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the vespers, and there will hopefully be more. I disagree for Nunc dimittis, - Pärt's is independent (yes, he wrote also a Magnificat, but not in the English Mag&Nunc fashion. Luther's song and cantatas based on it are all independent. How about a Mag&Nunc category AND the two others? It's only the Anglicans who combine the two in Evensong, - for Catholic tradition, it was Mag in Verspers and Nunc dimittis in Compline, and Lutherans followed the separate ways. Bach, Schütz etc all composed Mag without Nunc ;) - In memory of de:Jörg Streli, born 26 March and with a chapel image on the German Main page. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:22, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Potipher Andreas has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Searched Google, GBooks, GNews, AllAfrica.com, and found nothing about this sculptor except profiles on commercial art sales sites. The ref given in the article is a good example of the kind of unreliable sources I found - it's a group that sells sculptures so it has a direct commercial interest in the subject and is therefore not independent. Fails WP:GNG and WP:NARTIST. (This article is also a somewhat apparent paraphrase of the source, but not quite enough that I was comfortable G12ing it).

I think Paul Montgomery was an prominent American Businessman as cited:

"one of the 25 most influential people in the history of videography"

"The NewTek team was featured in USA Today, Time, Newsweek, Forbes and Fortune as well as being dubbed "revolutionaries" by Tom Brokaw on NBC Nightly News and featured as "the bad boys of video" in Rolling Stone Magazine. Mario Del Monaco

Dear Ser Amantio, since I saw several edits of yours in the article on Mario Del Monaco (as well as all round the English Wikipedia), I wondered whether you might be willing to take a look at the possible incipient edit-war between User Kaja Enäveri and me, concerning that article. I came across it by chance and I'm not very interested in it: frankly, not being a native speaker, I wouldn't feel like getting involved in a long debate with an user who seems to ignore Wikipedia's basic rules. In any case, I apologize for having disturbed you. Cheers.--Jeanambr (talk) 13:10, 7 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adrián Guida moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Adrián Guida, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Question

[edit]

Hello! When adding cats to my new stubs, what is the best way to determine if the artist is a 20th C or 21st C artist? Is it just a ballpark estimation, as in someone who is 25 or 30 years old in 1999 would be 21st century, as that is when they will make most of their work? Thanks.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 05:51, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ThatMontrealIP: It depends...there's a bit of ballparking in there sometimes, yes. I tend to assume anyone who's 30 or younger is likely to have only become active professionally after 2000, and I'm not considering student work in the equation. Usually it goes the other way - I'm assuming someone born in the mid-60's or earlier was active before 2000, because that's often a safe bet. That being said, I also check the links to see the dates on the artworks on the museum collection - that's basically where I'm checking. Hope that helps! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:26, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this helps enormously, and I will start categorizing my new stubs following your advice! Thanks.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 15:35, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Any time. Happy to be of help. Happy editing, and keep up the good work - I'm on a folk art kick at the moment, but I may join you in the trenches soon enough. There are some artists at the Smithsonian I've been eyeing... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:42, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. Plenty of time left, I finished going through the Whitney and am on the MOMA, so I'll leave the Smithsonian to you! It's interesting that some museums might be trying to hide their holdings, by providing a search function but not a flat list! MOMA and the Whitney are pretty up front. ThatMontrealIP (talk) 15:46, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, I think it's a matter of resources more than anything else. Not that they're trying to hide anything, but their websites run on an older model, and they don't have the wherewithal to update them.
And please, feel free to tuck into the Smithsonian if you have the time. I don't know when I'm going to be able to get to it - I have the attention span of a flea, sometimes. :-) Also the National Gallery of Art - I suspect there are some intriguing possibilities there, especially in the print collection.
What about the Metropolitan Museum? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:51, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • the Met is on my list. Re finding collection databases, I was able today to extract a collection list by parsing the source code on the collections web page of an unnamed museum. I think I know why these lists are sometimes not easy to get to: the particular museum has about 10 men for each woman in their collection.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 08:39, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@ThatMontrealIP: I'm really curious about both the book art and the contemporary collections at NMWA. I have a feeling there will be quite a few artists there we don't have articles for. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:40, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea... we don't have to guess at which names are female in that case! That is another museum that uses a "collection highlights" page rather than a flat list, but i see in the page's source code that the URL for the collections database is https://nmwa.org/our-collection?f[0]=field_work_artist%3A274, where incrementing the last three digits gives another work. I might just write a script for that.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 17:51, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@ThatMontrealIP: Good luck...I thin we might be better served just asking the museum on that one. I know there have been some editathons there - I can ask and see if anyone has a contact to work with.
Also, if you're looking at museums whose collections lend themselves to scripts (I presume...I don't know the first thing about such things), I might look at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. As I recall they used to have a fairly comprehensive list of artists in the collection on their website. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:03, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Interview request, OneZero Magazine

[edit]

Dear Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

I'm a journalist writing a story about polarization online, with a particular focus on a recent journal article that argues that Wikipedia resists political polarization through its editing protocols.

Given your prolific editorship on Wikipedia, I was wondering if you might have some time over the next few days to do a brief interview about what is involved with being a Wikipedia editor and how you handle differences of opinion on the platform.

The story will be published in OneZero, a new technology magazine for Medium.

If you're interested, please email me at: scarschwartz@gmail.com

All the best,

EDIT: I'm pretty sure someone else is the creator of this article now that I look at it. I looked at the talk page instead of the original article by mistake. Sorry!

I came across the article when working on pages. While I've been looking for sources to expand it, I struggled to find them. It doesn't seem like it meets notability. I nominated it for deletion. Here's the reason I wrote:

When searching for Skrimish at Aberdeen, MS, many references seem to be circular back to Wikipedia and Wiki-like sources. The NPS.gov site simply lists it from a book in 1908 that gives little details. I'm also unable to find secondary sources that go further than simply listing the article. The only in-depth source I've found was a collection of primary sources written by the belligerents called The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies.

I wanted to let you know, so you could look it over.

I mentioned you in passing at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/In the media, but explaining your achievements takes a bit of space. Stopping a Nomination for deletion

[edit]

Hello,

You reviewed an page of mine so I was wondering if you could help me. My page on Ally Prisock has been nominated for deletion. For the life of me I do not understand why as it is sourced and she is a professional soccer player. How do I get an article that has been flagged as Nomination for deletion to not be deleted?

Cheers

Hey sugar, been a while since I have needed your help, but this one is beyond my skills. I was completely shocked that there was no direct link to this name, as if you put it in search, there are tons of entries. I made a redirect, but other than manually searching and making the corrections, I have no clue how to link all these to the article. Can you waive the magic wand and link these? Thanks, no hurry. I don't know much about fractur (which I think is also the plural). I have some books on Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a major collection. So does the Barnes Foundation, but it is hidden away on Dr. Barnes's farm in Chester County, out of public view for 50+ years. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:06, 27 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@BoringHistoryGuy: I didn't know much about it either - still don't, really. But there are a number of thumbnail biographies in the Encyclopedia of American Folk Art which I purchased, and I thought it might be interesting to develop them out a bit. The Winterthur Museum has a large collection, too, but interestingly neither of the usual DC suspects (the National Gallery and American Art Museum) have many examples. Interestingly, I also found Jacob Strickler, who was a Virginian...which led me to his neighbor Johannes Spitler. I love writing articles about people like that who have been overlooked by the traditional histories. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:07, 27 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging living persons as deceased

[edit]

Hi. Kat Nestel is very much alive and well, but when you created that article's talk page you listed her as not livng. Same deal with Talk:John Altschuler, Talk:Jerome Schneider, Talk:Jenny Han, etc. Any ideas on how to rectify this? I'd rather not have to manually check through your (millions) of semi-automated edits, yet something tells me you've made this error on many other BLP talk pages. Sro23 (talk) 05:28, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Sro23: Granted, it's been five years, so my memory is hazy...but I don't recall creating many biographical talkpages using the biographical talkpage template for one reason or another. So there won't actually be that many. That being said, I have one or two ideas about targeting edits I made from that time using AWB. Let me poke around a little and see what I can come up with, but it might not be until tomorrow night. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 08:48, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Please be careful, though. I see now you're removing the living=no parameter from biographies of people who are long dead (Michelangelo Cinganelli, Lorenzo Tancini, [8] [9], etc). Sro23 (talk) 18:30, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Sro23: The problem is, I haven't found a way to cross-reference Category:Living people with the article set in question to catch the ones I missed. I figure having no parameter is better than having an incorrect one, at least. Ideally, I'd do a run-through the whole category to catch any of my errors and any others that are lurking about, but neither AWB nor Petscan wishes to cooperate. If you have any suggestions? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:59, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please stop making automated changes! -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:41, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm relieved to see that the uncertainty about the life status of painter Edward Harrison May is not due to some sort of ongoing process of the dead rising from their graves to walk the earth, but merely automation problems. I shall restore him to "living=no".Brianyoumans (talk) 13:49, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just saw your AMA from reddit. Do you have a tip jar or donation page so people can throw you a few bucks? 71.3.195.32 (talk) 19:09, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that your AWB run (mentioned above) has filled Category:Biography articles without living parameter with 1,131 pages. I will see what I can do about writing some python script to cross reference it with Category:Living people. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 19:37, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Through a quick and dirty python script, I have discovered all articles in the category with Category:Living people and then tagged their talk pages with |living=yes. There were 72 pages which I found needed the tagging. All the other pages will be from pages which are uncategorised or the person is dead. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 20:03, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Found 905 pages where the article was in a category such as "1920 deaths". Found using regex "\d\d\d\d deaths" Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 20:18, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dreamy Jazz: Awesome, thanks. Is there any way you could run a similar script over the category Category:Living people, find any there where the talkpage parameter is |living=no, and change it to |living=yes? I'd do something like that, only I don't know the first thing about coding. Regardless...that should take care of the issue once and for all, then. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:23, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ser Amantio di Nicolao, can do. I'll finish the AWB run on the living=no articles first then I get too that. Happy editing, Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 20:24, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dreamy Jazz: Sweet. AWB I can do as well, if you're unable to finish - just give me a list and I can work on it tonight when I have access. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:27, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ser Amantio di Nicolao, for now I am running a script which checks to see if the talk page is in Category:Biography articles of living people for every article in Category:Living people. This will detect pages needing changing, except if the talk page is already using {{BLP}} or similar (however, this isn't a big deal, as the BLP banner will have been shown somewhere on the page). Once I am able to get some code together, I will be able to catch these small number of cases. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 21:12, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Although the run has not completed with the script, the script is only at "ad" and has already found 200 pages needing to be fixed. I suspect the full list will be into the thousands. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 21:41, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dreamy Jazz: I was afraid of something like that. I feel like there's been quite a bit of deferred category maintenance on Category:Living people. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:42, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ser Amantio di Nicolao, OK. The script is taking a while... The script is outputting as it goes, so I have started on the 5,000 pages so far outputed which need fixing. Unfortunately a few (about 1 in every 20) are misplaced in Category:Living people. I am manually checking before each AWB edit to see if the person is still alive. From comparing numbers from the two categories, it seems likely that there will be ~33,000 pages to fix. I'll wait a bit more to post a list Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 11:37, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also there are cases where the tag has been tagged with living=no, where the subject is still alive Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 11:47, 7 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for helping to clean these up. I have been looking at a few articles in the Category:Possibly living people and there are some tags with blp=no that should be yes since the people are presumed to be alive; I have fixed the ones I found so far... --FeanorStar7 00:24, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
For any interested editors, User:Dreamy Jazz/talk pages needing tagged contains a list of ~23500 talk pages which are not in Category:Biography articles of living people but their articles are in Category:Living people. They need to have their articles checked first and if they are fine then tagged. The process I followed for a small bunch of these was:
  • Load part of the list into AWB
  • Automatically prepend {{WikiProject Biography|living=yes|listas=}} using AWBs prepend feature
  • For each talk page, open the associated article page (click on the talk page to open it in a browser and then go to the article page). Check to see if the page has been miss-categorised in Category:Living people. If it has (the subject is dead) then remove the living people category. If the article is not a biography then remove the category and skip the talk page in AWB
  • If the article is a biography (or is under the scope of the wikiproject), then make the edit in AWB to the talk page, ensuring that:
    • If the subject is dead, change the living parameter to |living=no
    • If you know what the value for listas should be for the article, then place it in the parameter (e.g. Mark White would be "White, Mark"). If you are unsure, I would recommend just leaving it empty
    • If the banner needs to be placed somewhere else on the page (e.g. it needs to be inside the {{WikiProject Banner Shell}}), copy and paste it to the right place
I will generate a list for Category:Possibly living people soon. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 06:39, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Dreamy Jazz and Ser Amantio for undertaking this project. I have a question: what are your thoughts about how to handle the Category:Missing people category? I know that some people are possibly living and others who were missing were later discovered to have died in the past... I also know that some of the articles may have a talk page but no bio tag. Thanks in advance... --FeanorStar7 14:22, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

@FeanorStar7: Oof, that's a tricky one. I'd say, for lack of a better alternative, I'd suggest treating missing persons the same as living persons for BLP purposes, unless there's a clear reason why not (due to year of birth, most likely). --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:44, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just to say I have added the Category:Possibly living people list to the list in my userspace. I could, if wanted, generate a list of Category:Missing people without the WikiProject Biography tag. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 18:11, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for updating the list. I think it would be useful to create a list for Missing people as well. I will say that I have looked at the articles in the category for women to make sure they had the WikiProject Women tag; if I saw that a bio tag was missing, I added it...--FeanorStar7 11:26, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
Update, 5/14/19: Another editor has made a point about missing people and taken out the bio tags for articles titled "Disappearence of X"; I agree for the most part; his reasoning is here: [10] --FeanorStar7 10:53, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite blocking of IP addresses

[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao! I hope you're having a great day and that life is treating you well. :-) I'm messaging you because it came to my attention that you blocked IP user 2600:1017:B80F:B7C3:FC25:A670:814E:22EF indefinitely. I'm not sure if you did this on accident or not, but I wanted to bring it up to you informally anyways. :-) While the block was certainly justified due to the user's repeated threats and disruption, an indefinite block definitely wasn't. This IP address is allocated to Verizon, a mobile network carrier in the United States. This means that IP addresses will frequently change hands as devices connect and disconnect from their data network and travel from node-to-node, or tower-to-tower. The indefinite block, given its allocation and the fact that it will frequently be handed out to different users over the span of just hours means that it will cause much more harm than good by affecting innocent users who happen to be given that IP address next. There are circumstances that have called for indefinite IP address blocks in the past, but these situations are extremely rare occurrences. I've run into IP users who have needed an indefinite block maybe twice while I've been an admin... so, definitely not a common thing. ;-) Anyways, I just wanted to give you a heads up; the indefinite block has already been fixed by another admin - so no harm done. ;-) If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to discuss them with you and help. I hope you have a great weekend and I wish you happy editing. :-D Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:58, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Oshwah: Understood - I only set it for as long as I did because I saw a similar IP making similar threats had been banned indefinitely, and I didn't want to offer the vandal a backdoor chance to get in again. I had it at a week initially - maybe still too long, but given the behavior involved I thought it fitting. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:24, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, and thanks for responding and for filling me in on your thoughts and what was going on. I figured you had a reason for it (or that it might've just been temporary), but I figured I'd do my due diligence and let you know nonetheless. Gotta have each others' backs just in case... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:43, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Oshwah: Absolutely. :-) Thanks for the alert, and happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:47, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Motu Akea moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article that you created, Motu Akea, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Please help me delete edits in the history tab of my wikipedia page, again.

[edit]

Hello Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

You have been a very helpful editor to me in the past and in very recent past as well. An individual is spreading slander on the esm-artificial Wikipedia page again. Could you please delete the edits in the history of the https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Esm-artificial page once again. The individual posting the slander used the name WeKnowTheTruthKS, and it was posted May 17, 2019 PST. It shows up in the history as May 18, 2019. Thank-you for your attention in this serious matter.

Sincerely, Kenn

@Greenapple22: I've removed it again and placed the article on my watchlist. I'll see about escalating if need be. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:04, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank-you.

[edit]

Thank-you very kindly for your swift response and for taking the time.

Kenn Sakurai

[edit]

Hi there. You recently had an interaction with a user, "greenapples22" about the page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esm-artificial . They signed their name as Kenn Sakurai however this is not at all possible as he's serving out his 4 year sentence in federal prison. He was convicted of child rape, and creating child pornography January 2018 at the BC provincial courthouse in Richmond, BC, Canada.

I'm working with the victim in order to get the court documents which should be obtained very soon. Once the documents are received, I will be able to cite the sources for this edit. The person that claiming to be him is likely to be Ingrid Kaddatz, who was his character witness during his trial, despite the photographic and video evidence of his crimes.

Because none of my edits are slander and completely factual, if I send you the court documents upon being received, would the edits stay? He must be kept from working anywhere where children may be.

Thank you.

@174.7.188.102: Please read Wikipedia:Verifiability. Anything that does not meet that standard will be deleted and reverted...and I would caution you very strongly about reintroducing the information without sufficient references. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 10:38, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Inuit artists

[edit]

Thanks again for all your reviews! I am down to about thirty more artists that are left in my National Gallery of Canada list. I left all the Inuit artists to the end as they have quite complicated names. That said, they are blowing my mind. Check out this drawing by Siassie Kenneally.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 06:10, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ThatMontrealIP: They're fascinating. I wrote a few articles about Inuit artists myself, way back when. Right now I'm idly picking through some of the newer entries in the collection at the National Gallery of Art. I did a few from the American Art Museum, too, but there's lots more in the collection there. Particularly craft artists in the Renwick. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:30, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

False Accusation

[edit]

Hello Ser Amantio di Nicolao It has been brought to my attention that there is a false accusation in this talk section with you on May 18,(174.7.188.102) that I am impersonating as someone to edit Wikipedia. I have never impersonated anyone, I have never edited a Wikipedia page, I have never written to you until now, I have never been on trial as a witness to a crime, I have never seen photographic or video evidence of a child rape crime. Please remove my name and this talk immediately from the internet. I will be looking into this slander further. Thank You IKWhitelight2019 (talk) 17:22, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Whitelight2019: I don't believe in removing things from my talkpage...this is a public forum, and I believe in keeping a public record, even of vandalism. That said, I might consider redacting the edits in question if I receive proof of slander from appropriate authorities. What I will tell you: the article in question is currently free from unreferenced edits. If unreferenced accusations are reintroduced, I will remove them. BUT. If accusations are reintroduced with an acceptable reference, I will not remove them...that will need to be taken up with other authorities. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:01, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Copying of subcategories into parent categories via Cat-a-lot

[edit]

I appreciate that your edits are made with good intent and I know that you have accomplished a lot in this way so please don't view this as an attack but I am concerned about the plethora of pages I have seen where you have copied subcategories into their parent categories via Cat-a-lot, such as this edit in which Category:British television films is copied into Category:British films. Category:British television films is already a subcategory of Category:British films so this copying edit is actually contrary to the purpose of specific and precise categorization. As you can read on Wikipedia:Categorization#Categorizing_pages, "each categorized page should be placed in all of the most specific categories to which it logically belongs. This means that if a page belongs to a subcategory of C (or a subcategory of a subcategory of C, and so on) then it is not normally placed directly into C." Would it be possible to create a function to eliminate the parent categories that you have added in this way? That would be a very useful tool for film categories in particular where categories such as "British films" are far too broad and are already covered by multiple subcategories. --Nicholas0 (talk) 00:58, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Nicholas0: I've often wished for such a feature myself. However: regarding films, longstanding preference at Wikipedia:WikiProject Film is for all articles to be in the parent-by-country category, viz. this hatnote at Category:British films: For convenience, all British films should be included in this category. This includes all films that can also be found in the subcategories. Otherwise I try to tread fairly carefully. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:02, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Do you know of any automated way of adding {{WPBS}} to article talkpages with 3 or more wikiproject tags? This would involve a lot of articles. It's a simple cleanup but not high priority. Geoffroi (talk) 23:20, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Geoffroi: Adding the template is pretty easy with AWB. It's generating the list of pages that require it that would be tricky. Offhand I'm not sure of any way to easily figure out how many pages would be covered, but I'm sure there's a tool that can do it. I might ask at WP:Village pump to see if anyone has a tool that can generate the list. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 23:24, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There's no hurry. Maybe see about it when you get back. I'm focusing on assessments, which can be time-consuming with the articles that are hard to rate. Geoffroi (talk) 23:34, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A Woman of the Century

[edit]

Hi Ser, I just created the article, A Woman of the Century. The list of 1,400+ names is here. A lot of the biographies have been written; there are a lot that I still need to write. (a) Some of these Wikipedia biographies contain a photo, and the photo has the caption, "A woman of the century", or "Woman of the century", or "A Woman of the Century". I think AWB would come in handy to add a wikilink to A Woman of the Century. (b) Also, I just found this: Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from A Woman of the Century. It might make sense to add this cat to all the biographies within the scope of the book. If you have time/inclination to do either task, thanks! NO RUSH. If you're busy with other things, no worries! --Rosiestep (talk) 23:39, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

WikifY

[edit]

Hello Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

I've created and have been beta testing a Chrome extension that I will soon be porting to Firefox. It scans web page text for all Wikipedia titles and makes the title act as a trigger for a page summary pop up when you hover over it. It’s similar to the summary pop up Wikipedia now has but works for almost all web pages and has unlimited levels of pop ups.

By default it currently scans a small subset of domains and optionally scans or does not scan a domain’s pages by clicking the extension icon. You can also change the security in chrome to only ever allow access when the button is clicked.

I’d love any feedback from you or anyone that would be interested in providing it.

Xth century artists categories

[edit]

Hello Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

I see you've been adding various century categories to artists lately. The one I reverted you on - [11] - was because Category:21st-century Japanese artists clearly says "Japanese artists active in the 21st century, not merely alive but at a nursing home. There's obviously some misty edge cases here - an officially retired musician who still performs occasional concerts of already written pieces in 2000 or the like, say - but that seems the standard. Eugène Delacroix is not an 18th-century painter because he was 1 year old during that century. Just wanted to double-check - that IS the standard, right? If so, probably worth being a little less aggressive with the categories when the active period is unknown or unclear. SnowFire (talk) 16:38, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@SnowFire: Yes, that's the standard, as far as I know. I do try to be fairly cautious, in that I won't generally add a category unless I think it can be supported by the article text, but I freely admit that I misfire now and again. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:05, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Le Cid I have a ton more I can do, but whether the article can take any more featured images is the question. @Adam Cuerden: I don't, I'm sorry. Many of them I know; my father has an old book of facsimiles of French opera posters, and we even had the Werther poster framed and up in the bathroom at one point, as I recall. @Adam Cuerden: Ah, yes - I'm pretty sure Dad saw those both when they were done in the 70's with Sills and Sutherland. Talking of Sills, and of Manon - it was she from whom I learned the role, long years ago. Henry Price was her Des Grieux. (We had a videocassette). --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:55, 11 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sills is fantastic. So's Sutherland, for that matter. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.7% of all FPs 03:53, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Adam Cuerden: Sutherland (and I am sure I shall catch much flak for admitting it publicly) never appealed to me all that much - the sound of the voice was very pretty, but I never cared for the delivery. Sills, on the other hand, was another matter. Ever see her Roberto Devereux from Wolf Trap? Late 70's, I think it was. The absolute definition of blood-and-thunder artistry...and she admitted that it might have shortened her career by a decade but she didn't care. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:26, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't, I fear. Though, when I checked, my favourite Sutherland role - Elvira in I puritani, soaring enthusiastically above everyone else.... turned into Sills. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.7% of all FPs 22:50, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Adam Cuerden: Here's the finale - Wolf Trap, 1975. With Susanne Marsee, John Alexander, and Richard Fredricks. (I met Marsee at the Kennedy Center once - she was with an old colleague and friend of my father's. Very pleasant lady.)
I find myself drawn more and more to Donizetti among the bel cantisti, rather than Bellini. I like Bellini well enough, but Donizetti has more of the fire that I love. I've been lucky enough to see twelve or thirteen of his works live over the years, and I marvel at what he was starting to achieve with the late works especially. (Maria Padilla was a revelation.)
This conversation has me revisiting Gloriana, incidentally - a horse of a different color, surely. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:53, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Can you populate this? It has sub categories by country and city but I think it should contain all city church categories on wikipedia for browsing purposes.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:00, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: I can try, but it won't be for a few weeks - I'm going out of town tonight. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:02, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
