- Sadly, Dr. Hans Diehl passed away. MaynardClark (talk) 01:31, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes shame to hear about that, he was 77. I will try and do his article soon. We also need an article for Virginia Messina. Psychologist Guy (talk) 01:33, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- IMO, Mark Messina is also notable, but I know each of them. Ginny is an advocate; IMO Dr. Mark Messina (PhD) is more of the applied scientist. "Dr. Mark Messina is a nationally recognized expert on the health effects of soy."[1]
- Thanks for your emails, I have stored the links for Hans Diehl. I will create the article this week. From the available sources I have read, I think he was plant-based, not vegan. Maybe you know more on that if you met him personally. Psychologist Guy (talk) 22:34, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- I would be surprised if he consumed anything not of plant-origin. But SOLID, HARD evidence might persuade me.MaynardClark (talk) 22:40, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

I noticed a long time ago you left some comments about William Shatner being vegetarian, he is now 92 years old. I looked into this but all the sourcing is about 40-45 years old. I have not seen any recent sourcing on Shatner and vegetarianism. I suspect he is still a vegetarian but we need good sourcing for this, an interview would be good for WP:RS. In 1982, Shatner was the host of this vegetarian documentary "The Vegetarian World" [2]. If you have any recent sources let me know and we can update his article. Psychologist Guy (talk) 00:29, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- William Shatner produced "Vegetarian World" (a movie on reel-to-reel tape) that was a mainstay of vegetarian outreach during (I think) the 1980s. After real-to-reel became hard to show, the ISKCON movement (in Los Angeles at the time?) produced a $10 version on plastic cassette). At some point, the blurry video was uploaded to the Internet (for free video watching). Presumably, Shatner was vegetarian at the time. Some of the long-time Los Angeles-based vegan 'activists' could be consulted for verification (and possibly some strategic pathway for confirmation of the claim that Shatner was vegetarian at the time; I believe that he no longer is vegetarian. MaynardClark (talk) 00:33, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah thanks, I just watched the video on YouTube it was pretty good. Things really have changed. The old days of cassettes! Disappointing if he is no longer veg. I have recently been going over a lot of the older actors to see which ones are still alive and if they are vegetarian. There were vegetarian actors that lived a long time in their 90s but they are all deceased now. I have done a lot of historical research into deceased vegetarians. As for a few actors that are still living, Adriano Celentano is 86, John Astin is vegetarian and is now 93. Tippi Hedren is 93 but she eats fish so she is not a vegetarian like some sources claim. I know that Robert Redford is not veg either as he eats seafood. Eva Marie Saint is 99, she did positively review this cookbook but she is not vegetarian [3]. One of the oldest current living vegan actresses I found is Loretta Swit aged 86. Psychologist Guy (talk) 01:07, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- I see Marv Levy is alive at age 98 and is vegetarian. I will do some more research into Shatner and send out some emails. Psychologist Guy (talk) 01:16, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

Sad news about Steven M. Wise, thanks for letting me know. I would be interested in knowing was Wise a vegetarian? Do you have any info about his diet preferences? Psychologist Guy (talk) 02:48, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- On an unrelated note, I came across Charles Patterson (author). His birthdate is not listed on his Wikipedia article but from what I could see online it is 1935 so that would put him around 88 years old, do you know anything about Patterson. Hopefully he is still with us. Psychologist Guy (talk) 03:26, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- Steven M. Wise and his 2 wives (perhaps 3 wives) were all vegans. We shared several dinners together. I recall what he bought to an Atlantic Ocean-front vegan potluck organized by/for the Boston Vegetarian Society (decades ago). MaynardClark (talk) 03:32, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Charles Patterson (author) and I have met and have spoken (perhaps at the 2015 NYC vegan parade. He was playing on themes previously thundered by Marjorie Spiegel (also a vegan of New York City).
- I believe that Charles Patterson was born in August 1935. Yes, he would be about 88.5 years of age. MaynardClark (talk) 03:37, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Letter to James Peden
[edit]How were you able to review 'Porecca K. Personal letter to James Peden re: Interview of University of California (Davis), North Carolina State University, and University of Guelph Researchers investigating the connection between dilated cardiomyopathy and diet, 1995', this reference does not appear to be digitised anywhere and appears to be, well, a personal letter. Traumnovelle (talk) 05:55, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- It was cited in note # 80 by Dr. Andrew Knight, University of Winchester, in Vegetarian versus Meat-Based Diets for Companion Animals, where the topic of the letter to James Peden was itemized in note # 80. This is a note where Dr. Knight discussed [6.2. Controlled Studies] the role of controlled studies in resolving challenging elements in veterinary nutrition.
- "In other cases, such deficiencies have not been rectified. The amino acid L-Carnitine, for example, is of potential importance to dogs at risk of dilated cardiomyopathy. This potentially fatal disease affects about 2% of all dogs, appearing mostly in large and giant breeds. A small percentage of these lack sufficient cardiac L-Carnitine, which is normally removed during processing, and not supplemented due to cost (Fortunately, alternative sources exist; e.g., www.Carnitine-taurine.com"
- Knight A, Leitsberger M. Vegetarian versus Meat-Based Diets for Companion Animals. Animals (Basel). 2016 Sep 21;6(9):57. doi: 10.3390/ani6090057. PMID: 27657139; PMCID: PMC5035952.
- Andrew Knight BSc./BVMS, PhD (Griff.), PhD (Winch.), MANZCVS, DipECAWBM (AWSEL), DipACAW, FRCVS, PFHEA, Veterinary Professor of Animal Welfare, Adjunct Professor, School of Environment and Science, Griffith University, Queensland, Australia, Visiting Lecturer in Animal Welfare, University of Winchester, UKm EBVS® European & RCVS Veterinary Specialist in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law; American & New Zealand Veterinary Specialist in Animal Welfare, Fellow, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, & Member, Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Animal Welfare chapter), Principal Fellow, Advance HE. http://www.AndrewKnight.info This is NOT any of the three men listed in the Andrew Knight disambiguation article.
- Dr. Andrew Knight's pet food videos at: http://www.aknight.info/vids
- Dr. Andrew Knight's My pet food articles: http://www.aknight.info/articles/pet-food
- Dr. Andrew Knight's new book: Routledge Handbook of Animal Welfare: http://www.aknight.info/AW-book
- I would think that the point here is that (a) K. Porecca corresponded with James Peden (researcher and developer of these early formulations) and (b) Andrew Knight believed in his article that this letter contained content worthy of citation. We are not discussing the optimality of Peden's formulations BUT its historical high point in the search for vegan pet foods. Today we would think that vegan pet food design would need to consider (a) Health and nutrition, (b) Palatability (consider the role of veterinary taste testing of different formulations, and the feedback to AI), and (c) Sustainability. But "There must be multiple qualifying sources to meet the notability requirements." MaynardClark (talk) 16:33, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Magnus Klaue
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Magnus Klaue requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Deletion discussion about Magnus Klaue
[edit]Hello MaynardClark, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
While your contributions are appreciated, I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Magnus Klaue, should be deleted, as I am not sure that it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia in its current form. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Magnus Klaue.
Deletion discussions usually run for seven days and are not votes. Our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. The most common issue in these discussions is notability, but it's not the only aspect that may be discussed; read the nomination and any other comments carefully before you contribute to the discussion. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Wasianpower}}

Return to Draft
[edit]{{Re|Wasianpower}}
I would like to continue working on this, but these next few months are heavily scheduled for me.
Could this contested article merely be returned to my sandbox as a draft, so that I could work on it later? MaynardClark (talk) 18:06, 1 September 2024 (UTC)~~~~

Personal soapboxing on article talk pages
[edit]Hi. A heads up that I removed this per WP:NOTAFORUM. The talk page is for discussing how best to summarize reliable sources to improve the article, not to opine about the subject (and certainly not to opine about an aspect of the subject that you personally think should be covered by external sources, but isn't). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 17:12, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
Hello, MaynardClark,
Just a notice alerting you that this draft was deleted via CSD G13 as a stale draft. If you want to restore it, it seems that you know where to go. Liz Read! Talk! 00:18, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
- yes, I would like to restore my working draft of Vern Bennom Grimsley, who, if he had had money (which was not his object or objective), he would have been even more famous in his time MaynardClark (talk) 00:56, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Familysearch
[edit]Hi Maynard, Per Wikipedia:Familysearch the familysearch website is "generally unreliable". I do not think it is a good idea to keep adding it, as your edits will most likely be reverted by other experienced users or admins. We cannot use that source because it is user generated. Psychologist Guy (talk) 22:23, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Surely we do need to check the dates that we include (because some of those dates in your articles are undocumented), and they are often very incomplete. Thank you for doing them, but (for instance) re: Elizabeth Horsell. mentioned her husband's passing in 1863 (but with no name), and he was an 'activist' in the same organization (reportedly with both publications and 3rd party mentions). Who is William Horsell:
W. Horsell, Cholera Prevented by the Adoption of a Vegetarian Diet; and cured by a Judicious Application of the Hydropathic Treatment (London: W. Horsell, 1849). * W. Horsell, Cholera Prevented by the Adoption of a Vegetarian Diet; and cured by a Judicious Application of the Hydropathic Treatment (London:W. Horsell, 1849).

- ---- First Principles of Vegetarianism

- And Frank Wokes: did he have any family? was he married or single and childless? Did he only do his work? In the future, I'll try to use primary sources where available, though even time-era 3rd party sources are secondary sources. MaynardClark (talk) 22:38, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I am a member of newspapers.com and other websites. The best sources for birth and death dates are obituary newspaper articles or old journals. I have access to birth and death records to verify such claims. If there is no specific birth or death date then I do not list them. I would rather leave a date off an article then add original research. It's not worth citing familysearch because it will just be removed. The best place to look as stated is old newspaper articles.
- As for Elizabeth Horsell I didn't create that article, Throughthemind did. That user has written a lot of good articles. The problem is, is the further you go back the harder it is is to find newspaper sources for birth and death dates. Horsell was born in 1796. I doubt there are many sources that document specific details about her life. It was her husband who was much more well known. Psychologist Guy (talk) 00:39, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Who was her husband? William Horsell, or was William Horsell her brother? Was William Felton Elizabeth Horsell's husband? Then she would have kept her maiden name after marriage? 1846-1848? Wouldn't a mention of him with his name be worthwhile? Maybe a separate article about him... Thank you for updating Frank Woke. MaynardClark (talk)
As a scientist, he goes in Category:Scientists from Paterson, New Jersey. I just created that category and removed Category:Scientists from New Jersey per WP:SUBCAT. Nor would his article belong any longer in Category:People from Paterson, New Jersey for the same reason. As for Category:People from Paterson, New Jersey, by occupation, that is a container category. Container categories NEVER have individual articles placed in them.Lost in Quebec (talk) 22:46, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Why didn't you merely (a) create the new (corrected?) category and (b) then input it (instead of 'reverting' (doing a reversion)?? Yes, he was a scientist of considerable note.~~
- You put the wrong category on the page AFTER I did those category changes.Lost in Quebec (talk) 23:46, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the correction. MaynardClark (talk) 14:44, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

International Vegetarian Union presidents
[edit]I have added the presidents up until 1999. Do you know any of the presidents after Maxwell Lee? Psychologist Guy (talk) 23:55, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- I met urban geographer Maxwell Lee and drove him around Boston (during the 1980s, I think) and gave him a platform to discuss the spatial distribution of plant-based diets as an urban geographer would understand them, but he talked about the 4 (or more) reasons for being plant-exclusive humans. Thank you for your researching and developing that article about Professor Lee. We invited John Silber (1926 - 2012) was the seventh president of Boston University from 1971 to 1996, and was an expert on the 18th-century philosopher Immanuel Kant, to attend Professor Lee's talk.
- Some notable presidents include Dr. Mitsuru Kakimoto from Japan (2000-2002), Richard Dimech from Australia (2000-2002), Susianto Tseng from Indonesia (serving from 2006), Emmanuel Eyoh from Nigeria (beginning in 2008), and Caryn Hartglass from the United States (2005-2008). These leaders helped expand the organization’s reach and influence, promoting vegetarianism worldwide.
- For further details, the IVU maintains historical records on its IVU Hall of Fame}.[https://www.ivu.org/members/council/fame.html IVU

- Hi Maynard, thanks for the info about Dr. Mitsuru Kakimoto and the others. It has been confirmed to me that the IVU got rid of the president position in 1999 and replaced it with chairman, so the people you listed were probably chairman. It's a bit of a semantics issue there isn't much difference between a chairman and president. I will go through them. On another matter, the IVU currently says it's mission is to promote veganism [4]. They seem to have dropped vegetarianism. Psychologist Guy (talk) 18:42, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Great! I'm happy with that ! MaynardClark (talk)
- I am thinking about also creating a Wikipedia article for the International Anti-Vivisection and Animal Protection Congress. You might find their historical papers interesting [5], [6]. There was a strong anti-vivisection movement in the 1910s and 1920s. Psychologist Guy (talk) 18:14, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- The Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department at Tufts, not himself a vegetarian, commented once to Faculty and staff that 'For hundreds of years there has been an anti-vivisection movement.' MaynardClark (talk) 18:29, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for sharing your personal experiences with Maxwell Lee. I am interested do you know why he died at the age of 73? What was the cause of death? It is a shame he didn't live longer. Maxwell Lee was a vegan for a long time. Unfortunately some of the vegans from that generation got sucked into a raw food fad scam, I don't know if Maxwell Lee got sucked into that but H. Jay Dinshah definitely did. Some of those vegans were not supplementing and were trying to live off mostly grains. It reminds me slightly of the macrobiotic phase that some people died from. Psychologist Guy (talk) 02:31, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- I hope that you have strong evidence that Maxwell Lee was a consistent vegan because (a) I drove this "urban geographer" around Greater Boston (to discuss "shifts" and political struggles in this area) and (while visiting one of several health food stores, which he had requested that we visit) saw him buy some vegetarian but nonvegan candy and (b) he complained about my "putting him up" (for free) with some very "elegant" raw food vegans (in Belmont MA), who were long-lived and very healthy and athletic (and he complained about his eating "all raw" for a week of his visit). I would like to see this "evidence" before you go ahead with any article about him. MaynardClark (talk) 04:49, 16 November 2024 (UTC)

Forgotten German vegetarians
[edit]Missing from Wikipedia is many of the early German vegetarians. You might be interested in this new paper [7]. An interesting person was Ludwig Ankenbrand (1888–1971), I will get round to creating his article. Psychologist Guy (talk) 02:17, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. But "early" is "relative" (to one's moments in history). I eagerly anticipate your publishing - and my reading - your article on Ludwig Ankenbrand (1888–1971).MaynardClark (talk) 02:20, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
