DYK for Larry Josephson

[edit]
Updated DYK query On September 26, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Larry Josephson, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Mackinac Bridge Photo

[edit]

Hi Sam,

Could you please tell me how I can get in contact with the owner of this photo. I want to use this picture on my blog and I want to make sure it is okay.

Thanks, Jaimee —Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.10.52.16 (talk) 16:59, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You don't have to get in touch with the owner of the photo. You just have to follow the terms of the license for the photo. Click on the photo to get to its image page, and then click on the license mentioned. For example, it might say Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 License. Usually, you just have to mention the photographer and that it came from Wikipedia. -- SamuelWantman 08:01, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: File:GGParkNorthWindmill2.jpg

[edit]

File:GGParkNorthWindmill2.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:GGParkNorthWindmill2.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:GGParkNorthWindmill2.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 20:31, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update to W:I

[edit]

I've updated Wikipedia:Issues, and find that after not looking at it for many weeks, the idea behind WP:CF stands the test of repeated exposure. Now we do need to find facilitators! +sj+ 04:22, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should tackle some very specific issue that's the topic of a current talk-page or policy-page dispute, preferably one where the "we seem to discuss this in a dozen different places, and have done every six months, and we never reach any conclusions" meme has come up already. Then get people who care about it involved with the Issue page for it as well as wherever a current resolution/problem/poll is being discussed. Something as specific as "speedy deletion of talk pages of deleted articles". like WP itself, W:I may grow better if we start with very specfific issues and work up to the abstract ones. +sj+ 07:56, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Template assistance requested

[edit]

re: Polygraph (duplicating device)

There is now a template for Did You Know nominations. I tried to include it in the article but it was expanded there rather than placed on the nomination list. Perhaps you could please assist me?

Article Name: Polygraph (duplicating device)

hook: (Did you know that) the original usage of the name "polygraph" was for an early 19th century mechanism used to create a duplicate of a handwritten document as it was created, used most famously by the third US President Thomas Jefferson?

Self nomination (or yours if you please to do so)

Jefferson's Polygraph

Replaceable fair use File:Matthew_Shepard_head_shot.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading File:Matthew_Shepard_head_shot.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 10:25, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This seems a very long and complicated way to tell me that there is now a free replacement for an image that was not free. Perhaps you hadn't seen the history to see that the image was originally uploaded several years ago. Anyway, I've deleted it, and linked the article to the free image so it is all moot. -- SamuelWantman 07:14, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:A Hard Day's Night opening chord.ogg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:A Hard Day's Night opening chord.ogg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:36, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of French language films has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I don't see the necessity of a list like this when [Category:French-language films]] already exists. Additionally, this list is not even close to being comprehensive, judging by the number of articles that belong to the aforementioned category.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. sdornan (talk) 15:43, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for uploading your useful high tide/low tide Bay of Fundy image: File:Bay of Fundy High Tide.jpg

Do you know what port in the Bay of Fundy is shown in this photo? Others have misidentified the location as Hall's Harbour, Nova Scotia but that does not fit the breakwater. Letterofmarque (talk) 19:00, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the extra information on that photo. If it was New Brunswick near Fundy National Park, it must be Alma, New Brunswick, the only port nearby and the breakwater matches perfectly. Thanks for the great pair of photos. 01:25, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

SFOBB eastern span replacment (SFOBBESR)

[edit]

re: Eastern span replacement of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge cc: User:Wetman, User:Giggett, User:Sam

Your peer review is requested.

I think that that this article has reached a point of stability and needs little to bring it up to "A" status (currently "B"), probably mostly a check of the external links for link rot. Other than that, which I and Giggett will do, would you care to review for tone, presentation, order, grammar, layout, style, etc. etc.?. One thing I am concerned about is that any change in status will attract image size ***, who will change the images to unreadable postage stamp size (after months of careful "magazine" layout, or who will object to the major sectionalization (after much work and consideration by myself and another editor, this was quickly undone by a previously unseen editor but also quickly reverted by myself), etc.

I would like to maintain this high level status until bridge opening in 2013 and then go for FA status. Your assistance this effort will be appreciated.

Please forward to any editors you think worthy of the invitation, particularly those of a technical, structural, or architectural inclination.

It is my personal belief that this structure will rank among the most significant modern structural+artistic achievements alongside the works of Santiago_Calatrava, Frank Lloyd Wright, and particularly, Jørn Utzon (Sydney Opera House), despite the fact that there is no single big name personality dominating this design.

Request to userfy Tiger IT Bangladesh Limited

[edit]

Hi Sam,

I'm requesting you to kindly userfy the Wikipedia article on "Tiger IT Bangladesh Limited".

The company information (of Tiger IT Bangladesh Limited) that was added was done in neutral way stating the facts. Please let us know what changes you require for the page to exist. It's is the pioneer in the field of biometrics application in Bangladesh, and till today this is the only Bangladeshi company to accomplish that. This is a noteworthy achievement for a software company in our country. More importantly, many of its competitors have their entry in Wikipedia, whereas, Tiger IT ranks number one in competition. All claims about rankings were provided with detailed and accurate references for verification as well. This is also the company that had a historic contribution in running the country's first software based voter registration system in 2007-2008. A company that performed AFIS matching in 80 million records is very rare and had the largest database of this kind at the time of this achievement (in 2008). These are milestones set by not just a company, but a country.

Furthermore, if I.R.I.S. corporation can have their entry, we must allow Tiger IT's article to be here as well. Not to mention, Tiger IT's competitors NEC, SAGEM, Cogent Inc., also have their Wikipedia entries. Please rather share with me how we can make this article better, or if you need to see sources of all the facts. I'm new, so please share your assistance or if you even want to please help me on such things.

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Sam,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.34.167 (talk) 20:57, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to help you, but since you made the request anonymously on my page, and there are no deleted pages that correspond to that anonymous IP address, and you didn't mention the name of the deleted page, there is no way for me to guess who you are, and what page you are talking about. So reply from a registered account, and provide the name of the deleted article, and I'll restore it to a subpage of you your user space. -- SamuelWantman 01:18, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article 94117 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability. We don't have separate articles on separate zip codes unless they are specifically notable for some reason.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Krungthep Mahanakhon sample.ogg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Krungthep Mahanakhon sample.ogg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Paul_012 (talk) 15:29, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I hope you will be joining us tomorrow afternoon at the Edit-a-thon at Tech Liminal, in Oakland. We'll be working on articles relating to women and democracy (and anything else that interests you). It's sponsored by the California League of Women Voters, Tech Liminal, and me.

If this is the first you are hearing of this event, my apologies for the last-minute notice! I announced it on the San Francisco email list and by a banner on your watchlist, but I neglected to look at the San Francisco invitation list until this evening. Thanks for uploading File:Krungthep Mahanakhon sample.ogg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Request for Rollback

Hey, Sam! I'm posting here to just to ask whether you could grant me rollback powers? I'm fighting vandalism every time I come on to Wikipedia and strive to assist the community as much as possible. At the moment I currently do everything manually with Twinkle which some people should know can get kinda annoying, trying to find all the vandalism. With the rollback feature, it'll allow me to use automation programs such as STiki. If you could assist me on my goal for a vandalism-free Wikipedia, I would be very grateful. File permission problem with File:RobertEBrown.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:RobertEBrown.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Wiki Loves Pride 2014

See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. SF edit-a-thons on March 7 and 8

[edit]
ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Wikipedia community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Wikipedia's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

I hope to see you there! Rosiestep (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

To opt out of future mailings about SF meetups, please remove your name from this list.

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

Eastern span replacement

[edit]

Greetings Sam:

Thanks for the "heads up" notice.

I was afraid of this - people wanting to strip the construction details out of the article once the construction is completed.

My vision for the article has always been focused not on the completed bridge but on the processes and problems of its creation.

While it seems to me appropriate to have a lightweight article on the eastern span (or as an enlarged section of the SFOBB article), I think it is important to keep the current eastern span article with all its details (perhaps under a new title - something like "Design and Construction of the San Francisco Bay Bridge New Eastern Span"), this to keep the selection, politics, and construction details visible and to document the on-going difficulties, otherwise such are likely to be swept under the rug, likely to be repeated here or elsewhere.

I am awaiting your comments.

Best wishes,

- Leonard.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Bay Area WikiSalon series kickoff, April 27

[edit]
Please join us in San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism
Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

For further details, see here: Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon, April 2016

We hope to see you -- and until then, happy editing! - Pete, Ben & Wayne

Wiki Loves Pride 2016

[edit]

As a participant of WikiProject LGBT studies, you are invited to participate in the third annual Wiki Loves Pride campaign, which runs through the month of June. The purpose of the campaign is to create and improve content related to LGBT culture and history. How can you help?

  1. Create or improve LGBT-related Wikipedia pages and showcase the results of your work here
  2. Document local LGBT culture and history by taking pictures at pride events and uploading your images to Wikimedia Commons
  3. Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Looking for topics? The Tasks page, which you are welcome to update, offers some ideas and wanted articles.

This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. The group's mission is to develop LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. Visit the affiliate's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:43, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather at Bay Area WikiSalon to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have:

  • A brief report on Pride edit-a-thon recently held at the San Francisco Publice Library, coordinated by Merrilee:
What topics might we cover in a follow up?
Find out more about resources your public library provides to help with editing (hint, it's more than just books!)
Special announcement (secret for now but come and find out more!)
  • Join in on an in person Wikidojo!
Are you curious how your peers approach writing a Wikipedia article? This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. (User talk page or email is fine.)
Announcements and impromptu topics are welcome, too!

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict.

Please claim your upload(s): File:Sumba Ikat.jpg

[edit]

Hi, This image was seemingly uploaded prior to current image polices, Thank you.

However, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure all media on English Wikipedia is correctly licensed and attributed it would be appreciated if you were able to confirm, that it was your own work, by marking it as {{own}}, amending the {{information}} added by a third party, and by changing the license to an appropriate "self" variant. You can also add |claimed=yes to the {{Media by uploader}} or {{Presumed self}} tag(s) if present to indicate that you've acknowledged the image, and license shown (and updated the {{information}} where appropriate).

IF you have other uploads, please consider "claiming" them in a similar manner, You can find a list of files you have created here.

This will assist those reviewing the many many "free" images on commons that have not yet been transferred to Commons. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:32, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

  • Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. The "WikiSpeech" was the subject of prominent national media attention in 2015, and more than half of her classmates contributed to writing and editing the commencement address via a wiki.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Sam. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Wikipedia through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Sam.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi My name i Fredrik Neppelberg and I am a senior Designer at Stockholm Design Lab. We are a design agency situated i Stockholm Sweden. I am writing to you in hope to get an ok for using one of your pictures for a packaging project. And, of course, to make sure that you are the original source for the picture. Yes, it's commercial work but on a very tight budget that's why we are searching for images within Creative Commons license .

The picture we have in mind is this: Spiral Aloe from above.JPG

And we intend to crop it to focus on the spiral shape in the middle

Please get back to us with your thoughts Best regards

The article FABGLITTER has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No notability, WP:G3, WP:A11

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sam,

I noticed your user talk page is showing up on Category:Pages with incorrectly transcluded templates, so I thought it might be your {{talkheader}} template, but that seems to be able to be used on user talk pages. SMcCandlish, any idea what the issue is? I can't figure it out...

Cheers,
Doug Mehus T·C 16:34, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It was because Template:Fifteen Year Society invitation wasn't substituted. These things are easy to track down: delete the top half of the page, and preview to see if the issue is still present. If so, you know it's in the bottom half. So delete half of that, and so forth, until you narrow it down to a single post. We really should probably have a bot keep track of notices that are supposed to be substituted, and which will just go around subst'ing them (in the applicable namespaces; shouldn't do it to them in their own documentation, etc.).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:00, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:Elizabeth Bridge small.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

orphaned image. While in 2005, we likely needed to crop another image to get a free image of this bridge, we now have an entire category of images with subcategories at Commons filled with various views of this bridge through the years (c:Category:Elisabeth Bridge, Budapest). If this cropped view is important to someone in the future, they could easily recrop it from the original. For those reasons, there is little encyclopedic need to store this image.

The file File:Lions Gate Bridge Vancouver small.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

orphaned image. The original image appears in the gallery of the Lions Gate Bridge page today. There is an entire category of images of the bridge at Commons to choose from that likely did not exist when this crop was created (c:Category:Lions Gate Bridge). I believe that it is unlikely that someone in the future would choose to use this version of the image and if they wanted to, they could recreate it from the original so there is no need to continue storing the image.

I understand you may be able to help me retrieve it so that I can work on it again? if so that would be amazing. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

[edit]

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative permissions and inactivity reminder

[edit]

Information iconThis is a reminder that established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. You are receiving this annual reminder since you have averaged less than 50 edits per year over the last 5 years.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to reengage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to be engaged with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:23, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Madé Lebah has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Can't find enough in-depth coverage to show they meet WP:GNG.

Request for content of deleted article

[edit]

I would like to obatin a copy of the recent deleted article The discpline of organizing (book) deleted last week. I'll rewrite it content to avoid de "promotional" flag and the speed deletion policy. Tsaorin (talk) 14:00, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Images from the Perry–Castañeda Library indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 04:35, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
