D1NZ

I won't replace the tag, but I disagree that "notability as a fully professional national series appears obvious." It's a 3 year old league that now has "a few professional drivers." That doesn't seem obviously notable to me. --OnoremDil 12:51, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Ok, fully professional is too strong. I highly doubt it would be deleted in an AFD discussion. I would strongly advocate for its inclusion. Sorry that my edit summary was worded too strong, especially the word "obvious". Royalbroil 17:33, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi mate. different subject but still on D1NZ. This is my first real article that i have made up and i agree with the changes you have made to it, thanks alot. Just a question though. Do you not have to give a reference if you take information from another article on Wikipedia? I will be continuing to edit this page so any help you give me with the formatting, editing etc will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Cstubbies 10:55, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

re: barnstar (thanks)

Just a quick note of thanks for the barnstar -- I looked through Flickr but could not find any CC/appropriately licensed images for the Digard page, but I'll keep looking. Any improvements you have for the page, go for it. (It could use an assessment on its Talk Page - real quick thing to do as Bristol just got waved off for a start due to John Andretti's issue :-) )

Anyway next projects if I remember maybe should be Robert Yates, RYR, or Davey Allison or one of the others.

Thank you again and here's hoping Thunder Valley gives us a good race tonight! Guroadrunner 00:20, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Re: Words of Encouragement

Thanks. The whole thing gets a little tiring over time. Having to repair vandalism, get rid of repetitive sentences, grammar changes, etc.

I'll be sure to give some of those articles a runthrough. I'd love to do some expansion (Key Motorsports) for one, but Racing-Reference has been down for a couple of weeks now, and it's near impossible to find stats without it. --D-Day 18:39, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

That's why I suggested working to improve a certain article in a big way. It's A LOT less tiring! I've used Racing-Reference in the past few weeks, and it's up right now! Go for improving Key Motorsports! The game is much different for WP:GA, so I'll coach you if you want! Royalbroil 18:43, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Kulwicki

Hi Royal. I think something weird happened with your first message...

Anyway: I see no problem with magazines in themselves. The question is more about their reliability for what is being discussed. A discussion of carburettor problems is probably not best sourced to a lifestyle magazine and details of a driver's divorce (say) might not be best coming from Race Tech magazine. Provided the articles are written by people who know their topic (i.e. have a good reputation) you should be fine.

TV is a bit difficult, I think. You could only use it for obvious unarguable things - like two drivers colliding on a certain lap. Anything more complicated would be your interpretation - whose fault the collision was, for example. That means they they might not actually be very useful as sources. I think you could probably cite the transmission in the various ways you suggest, but you've got to consider whether those sources are available to anyone else (legally!). If they're not (as DVDs?), then they don't really add any weight to what you've written. Even if you know a race was broadcast between 2 and 4 on 5 September 1991 on Channel X, that doesn't mean anyone else can retrieve the information. I know a lot of my stuff comes from books that people don't have, but they can always get them through a library or on Amazon if they want to check up on me. I don't know how anyone could reliably check what was seen or said in a TV transmission.

On the whole, I'd say avoid using the TV transmissions if at all possible.

Hope that's helpful, and remember that it's just my thoughts, not Wikilaw! Good luck with the article. I remember Kulwicki's career being reported in Autosport in the early 1990s. He seemed like an interesting and talented guy. Cheers. 4u1e 14:24, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Nevertheless

Hey,saw you had a page in the works in your sandbox. Are you planning to move it to mainspace soon? Chubbles 19:20, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

I will as soon as I get a reply from the admin who speedy deleted the article. At the point of speedy deletion it had several (at least 3) assertions of notability in my humble opinion, and I have asked what more is needed. How a popular CCM band can be speedy deleted after they have a Top 5 hit cited and a major CCM label record deal is beyond me. I have added several more points of assertion. If I don't get a reply very soon, I'll become WP:BOLD and move it myself. Royalbroil 04:16, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the article and the many DYK's -- Samir 00:54, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank for doing the update! I started this article because I felt it contributed significantly to the Alan Kulwicki article, which I am improving to at least Good and hopefully Featured Article. The 1992 Hooters 500 is considered one of the most interesting races in NASCAR history with lots of plot turns. Royalbroil 01:08, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Whelen Modified Tour

The photo of the Geoff Bodine Gremlin-bodied #99 probably should be removed from the WMT article. While almost everything Bodine raced has been for pavement racing, that car was a dirt modified that he ran at the Syracuse fairgrounds (and perhaps a special at Orange County, if the pic is from that flickr user's collection). It's not representative of past or current Tour modifieds. It would be appropriate if we get a dirt modified article together, though. Barno 15:01, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Point well taken. The article does talk about how the dirt and pavement car have diverged. I have uploaded the dirt modified cars of several drivers who later became notable. Royalbroil 15:05, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Strong thanks. While those don't fit the WMT article, they would be interesting additions to the early-career sections of the drivers' bio articles. Some (especially the Kenny Weld/Gary Balough 112 "Batmobile") would be helpful in illustrating a dirt modified article. Growing up in Wisconsin, did you have only IMCA-type dirt modifieds? Stock frames, claimer engines, ten-inch tires, $300 to win in the 1980s? I grew up on real northeastern dirt modifieds: Chevy big-block, a huge carb with no restrictor plate, and a ton of tire stagger, $1200 to win in the 1980s. Much more weight transfer entering a corner than an asphalt mod. There are still 25 or 30 dirt tracks in NY and a similar number in PA. There were a lot more in 1967 when I was age 3 in the Glen Aubrey Speedway and Ithaca-Dryden Speedway stands while my father did handicapping or scoring. Barno 23:15, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
I see the Batmobile isn't one of those uploaded by your bot. I must have seen it when I followed your link to the flickr page. (Could you check whether that image is CC-by-SA licensed? If so, it would help the project.) I saw a couple of the nine cars in the Wikicommons category in person, and the rest in weekly tradepapers. I also saw some of those drivers in other cars. Should we add a separate section to Wikipedia:WikiProject NASCAR/Organization for wikicommons' NASCAR category? It would need text making clear that it's not part of Wikipedia but is part of the Wikimedia galactic empire. Barno 23:40, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Maybe the /Organization subpage isn't the right place for that, since the Wikicommons category isn't in WPN's scope. But it would be nice to have it somewhere in the project's listed resources. A similar thing for WikiProject Motorsport's listings to connect to the "racing cars" category or whatever wikicommons has for that. Barno 23:49, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
I went to my first in-person races as a college sophmore in 1989 in my hometown Chilton, Wisconsin. My parents dragged me there. I thought it would be a bunch of rednecks trying to roll their cars for a case of beer. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was TOTALLY AWED by the cars when they were packing the track! I've been hooked ever since, and now everyone complains that I spent too much time and energy going to local races. Too bad! I used to watch all of the NASCAR races in the 1980s, but my interest has shifted to local races. Now I watch some of the races early in the NASCAR season. This year I went to every local racing facility in the eastern half Wisconsin except for one dirt track well over 2 hours south of me along the Illinois border, and two 1/2 mile dirt tracks around 2 hours north of me. Plus I missed the Milwaukee Mile. I will go to a Mid American Stock Car Series exhibition race at Road America in late October. I went to 4 karting tracks. So I saw almost everything around.
There are a few cars called modifieds left at one track that go way back to the 1950s [1], but that breed is all but extinct. They were extremely prevalent in the early 1970s according to my parents. A group of restored modified cars from back in the day toured the area last year in exhibitions. Many dirt tracks in the area are IMCA sanctioned, and they all have the IMCA Modifieds [2] and IMCA Street Stocks. Some have IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Modifieds. Slinger Super Speedway has "Midwest Modifieds" based on IMCA Modifieds [3] [4]. Nothing is very much like the Whelen Modifieds on TV. The guy on flickr is very happy to allow pics to be uploaded to Wikipedia, so either ask or I would if you give me a link.
I like the idea about linking WikiProject NASCAR to the Commons categories. I'll bring up managing all racecar categories on Commons at WP:MOTOR - it's another great idea. Also, I tell the bot what images to upload through a web interface. Royalbroil 02:21, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

dirt modified photos

  • I looked through us44mt's photo archive on flickr that you mentioned, and identified a couple that would be valuable to us. Mike McLaughlin's modified (1979 or 1980) is at[5]. The "Batmobile" that Gary Balough drove at Syracuse, the first dirt modified with ground effects more sophisticated than a roof wing, is at [6]. Eventually we might consider photos for Kenny Brightbill, Jimmy Horton (you already got the red 3 onto Wikicommons), and maybe Jack Johnson, as they're notable enough for WP bio articles. Barno 20:18, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
I started the Jimmy Horton article since I had 2 images. I easily remember him from his Cup and ARCA days, and I felt he needed an article despite no Top 10 NASCAR finishes. He was around long enough, plus he did a lot with his modified. I requested that the author change the licensing on the Magic Shoes and Batmobile photos. Royalbroil 05:28, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks; good start on Horton. I'll try to find Stock Car Racing feature articles; I believe there are at least a couple. If so I'll add citations and details. Barno 15:33, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

I've made changes to the article based on your comments. Feel free to take a look. Davnel03 10:29, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Smackbot Diffs

Greetings, just trying to explain my comment (then I will put the stick down...)

The diffs you linked to on ANI appeared to support the fact the task was approved

The first diff had the following comment for the first task:

"Task approved, does your bot already have a flag?" from User:lightdarkness - [[7]]

The second diff had the following comment on the second task:

"Looks good to me. Feel free to go ahead" from User:Carnildo - [[8]]

Both of those statements appear to me at least that the bot had approvals for both tasks listed. I was wondering if I was missing something in regards to them not actually being approved. Just clarification for my purposes in case I ever run into a similar situation. Cheers! Spryde 17:24, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Thank for for listing the article in the DYK section! I had no idea that it was suggested. I would have added a wikilink to the hook, but it's a minor matter. I feel like I made major contributions to the article, so I'm adding it to my DYK infobox total as a "major contribution". It turned out well! I'm curious why you decided to start the article. Royalbroil 20:56, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I had been looking at the Emerson Jr./Sr. High School (Emerson, New Jersey) article, and I saw his name listed as an alumnus, but no source was provided for his attendance there. I had never heard of him, and I did a search in The New York Times, my usual first step, not expecting to find much of anything. I found a few articles, and not only did I have a source, but this was a truly interesting subject for an article. I added my source and started a new article. I was gathering additional material to expand the content, but you mostly beat me too it. While I create plenty of articles, DYK gives me the incentive to create something more than just a stub, and this was a perfect example of that. While I did create the article, you certainly deserve your share of credit. I had meant to notify you of the DYK nomination, and I'm glad you found it. Congrats to you, as well! Alansohn 21:04, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

The article is on my watchlist since I contributed a lot to it, and since I added it to WikiProject NASCAR. I noticed the DYK template on the article's talk page. I came across the article from on a bot's result page for all new articles about NASCAR. I usually have to wikify them. Occasionally a bad one slips through that needs to be deleted. I often expand them, which is what happened in this case. I immediately go to google when I'm starting a new article. I won't start an article without solid reliable sources on google. I often don't wikify/expand if google shows few reliable sources. I started using the NY Times since they opened their archives. I use it to help source several articles, including one I'm going to take to Good Article consideration soon. Royalbroil 21:16, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Sconnie article

Thanks, Royal; but the article from OnMilwaukee takes some of these guys rather dubious assertions as gospel (they certainly didn't coin the term!). I'm still not at all certain that this article doesn't belong on WikiDictionary rather than here (it's already in UrbanDictionary). --Orange Mike 16:59, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

I wondered if it belonged here too. I kept resisting the urge to AfD the article, but I refused to wikify it until I found a source with some type of reliablility. I had an earlier article on this topic speedy deleted (or was it prod'd) since it was non-encyclopedic. I would support moving it to WikiDictionary if you would propose. The topic appears to be promotional to me (the uninformed).Royalbroil 01:17, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

I was going to suggest you hold off on archiving the Grafton talk until burningdwarf showed up again, but it's been a coupla weeks and he ought to be able to find the archive. A long time ago, you suggested that I create a template sandbox as a user subpage. I tried that with this page: Template:User:Falconus/Sandboxes/Template, but it didn't create it as a subpage. Do you know how to do this?

Thanks much, Falconusp t c 19:48, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

The problem is that you are using both user and template namespace. I meant that you should use the user namespace, meaning it starts with User:. So I meant you should call it User:Falconus/Sandbox. Royalbroil 23:55, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I didn't realize that you could call that as a template.--Falconusp t c 00:50, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Royalbroil. I was hoping you might be interested in becoming an administrator - I think you have a good range of experience across Wikipedia and would do a great job. If you are, I'd be more than willing to nominate you at WP:RFA. WjBscribe 13:11, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Buffy Waltrip

I've restored Buffy Waltrip - its not a great article but I think it just about asserted notability. It could definitely use expansion/sourcing though - I leave it in your care. Have you thought some more about my offer? Particularly if there are any questions I can answer or anything else I can say that might help you decide... To be honest, I guess I don't want to think I've played a part in you being unwilling to give it a go. I think you'd be a good choice and I'm hoping you'll say "yes" in the end. WjBscribe 04:42, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't feel that you personally have discouraged me in any way against attempting to become an administrator, but the comments/threats by some of your zealous advocates in your RFA caused me major wikistress. The incident caused me to stop considering any possibility of an administrator role for myself. I went the route of attempting to improve the quality of articles instead. I have no problems with you in any way, and I appreciate that you find my contributions positive. I have no questions about administrators or their role in Wikipedia. Royalbroil 05:08, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
When I said "The incident caused me to stop considering any possibility of an administrator role for myself." I meant that I thought that I would have extremely low probability of success - that I would be snowballed. The nomination process is extremely critical, or at least it was at the time of your successful adminship. Royalbroil 05:22, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
I've found a couple of references for Buffy Waltrip and added them to the article. One thing I'm not clear on - her article says she's the owner of Michael Waltrip Racing, but that article doesn't support that. I've found a ref for the fact she owns the car but maybe they jointly own the company? Perhaps you can shed light on that...
On the subject of RfA. I don't think you'd snowball at all, far from it - I think you have plenty to offer and are a stronger candidate than many who pass RfA every week. It has been felt lately that there is a lack of admin candidates who have good experience of content writing rather than just vandal reverting and automated processes. As someone who has ongoing experience of the RfA process, I think you'd do well - I won't make any promises I can't keep but I wouldn't have offered to nom you if I didn't think you were highly likely to pass. Have you ever thought of becoming an admin? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:36, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Wow, 2 offers in 10 days from prominent Wikipedians! (see 8 threads up) I'm currently studying the process/outcomes to see if I have an incorrect impression because my dated experiences with RfA have been negative. Royalbroil 15:49, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Hey Royalbroil,

Thanks for removing my CSD on the article linked above. I noticed the author had made some good changes and so I was coming back to take the tag down when you beat me to the punch. --jonny-mt(t)(c)Tell me what you think! 06:41, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

I've restored this article to User:Royalbroil/V*Enna. If you have any pages in your userspace that you want deleted, just place {{db-userreq}} on them and somebody can take care of them. I hope you can expand the article a bit; it needs a lot of improvement compared to the other band articles linked from Essential Records (Christian). If there's anything I can do to help out, let me know! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 13:59, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Heh, I saw that you removed the V*Enna entry from Essential Records (Christian). Did you want me to go ahead and delete User:Royalbroil/V*Enna, or are you still planning to work on it? You can reply here, I'll have it watched. Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:27, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm formulating a longer response that I'm ready to post on your talk page. Royalbroil 14:39, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
I went ahead and removed the article from your userspace. Thank you for the heads up about User:Rachael Lampa Fan. Based on the user's deleted contributions and the messages left on their talk page, it was obvious to me at the time that the user was disruptive. However, after looking into their contributions more in depth today, I realized this was in error. I went ahead and removed the warning from the user's talk page and left a message about the article. You seem to have a good bit of experience under your belt, so would you be willing to offer Rachael Lampa Fan some advice about writing POV-correct articles? I'm going to leave them another message with some advice specifically about V*Enna, and I think it would be excellent it if you could follow up as well. Also, I'd like to extend a truly sincere thanks not just for pointing out my mistakes, but for opening up and engaging in a dialog that encouraged productivity and collaboration. On a sidenote, based on the interaction we've had today, I would be happy to support you should you decide to RFA. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 15:16, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
The Socratic Barnstar
For expressing your concerns eloquently, so as to not come off as accusatory, and for encouraging productivity and collaboration in doing so, I award you this Socratic barnstar. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 15:16, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the kind words and barnstar. I'm blushing. I've been blushing a lot lately. Royalbroil 20:50, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Cadwallader Washburn and Edgewood College

Hi! I have no problems with merging the 2 articles about Cadwallader Washburn as long as the citations, references, sources, external links from both articles are preserve. Also the person who started the second Washburn article using the Payner book as the main citation/source also edited the Edgewood College article using the Payner book. I feel this is a good faith editing like with the 2nd Washburn article the individual started. However, the Edgewood College needs to be spruced up a little as the result of the editing.Thanks-RFD (talk) 15:07, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Obviously the two articles about Gov. Washburn need to be merged since they are about the same person. I put the merge tag on them hoping that someone else with a stronger politics background would be willing to merge the articles since politics is not my specialty. I'll eventually do it if no one volunteers. I hadn't noticed the changes to the Edgewood College article until you pointed it out. Parts of it are very messy. Royalbroil 17:34, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
Many thanks for your response. Politics is not one of my specialities either. As for the Edgewood College whoever put the citations tried but it is a tangled mess and I do not know how to unentangle it. Also you will be an excellent administrator. Thank you- RFD (talk) 21:38, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
The merger of the 2 Washburn articles is taking place. This means the 2 article will be deletedbut before all the information is written into the original article. Thank you-againRFD (talk) 00:39, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Royalbroil, thanks for your feedback on the AVUS image on WP:MOTOR. There is now a third version of the image available, and I would appreciate your feedback. You can vote here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Motorsport#AVUS_revisited Guroadrunner (talk) 06:52, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

St. Anna, Wisconsin

Hi! I found a reference about St. Anna's parish in the Diocese of Green Bay website and added it as a reference/citation removing the unreference tag as well. Somewhere there has to be reference to the history of St. Anna, Wisconsin. The unreference tag can always go back on. Thank you-RFD (talk) 12:39, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Your RFA was successful

Congratulations!
Congratulations!

Congratulations, I have closed your RfA as successful and you are now a sysop! If you have any questions about adminship, feel free to ask me. Please consider messaging me on IRC for access to the #wikipedia-en-admins channel. Good luck! --Deskana (talk) 01:21, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

I am not the spamming kind, so I'll give the following thank you message to everyone that supported me: Thank you for supporting my successful adminship. I appreciate the unanimous confidence that you gave me and promise not to abuse the extra buttons. I salute you the way that one of my idols Alan Kulwicki did to his fans after winning his only NASCAR championship: by turning around to face them and saying THANK YOU! Congrats or commiserations, from a fellow cheesehead and newly-minted Wielder of the Mop'n'Bucket! --Orange Mike | Talk 02:26, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the tips! I found out about the New Admin School from User:Orangemike's talk page and I passed. It helps that it was a pass/fail class, lol. I'll look into the other tips. Royalbroil 19:40, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Congratulations on the successful RFA! Guroadrunner (talk) 00:39, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Do ambassadors meet notability minimums?

I'm inclined to think not, in most cases not involving a major world power such as the Russians, English, etc. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:26, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

I would argue to the contrary. You might want to run a test case at AfD if you want to form consensus. Royalbroil 01:29, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

And great job with all the content you contribute as well! Very impressive. Cirt (talk) 01:21, 27 November 2007 (UTC).

Marchbanks Speedway

Thanks for your feed back on Marchbanks Speedway. I nearly did not include it as there was not much web support for it, but when I realised it was a historical speedway, I decided it was worth having in Wikipedia. I am surprised that you found it, as I had not categorised it! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 05:05, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I found it at User:AlexNewArtBot/NASCARSearchResult which I watch. The bot lists any new article with the string "NASCAR" in it. For future reference, you can bring up any United States race track (aka circuit) to me - I'm willing to assess if it belongs or not. I know plenty of websites for references. Re : Shank Hall

Hi! Congrats on your new shiny mop and I'm very glad that you actually asked; it doesn't hurt to be conservative when one starts out initially (I knew how it was like when I first got mine). :) I've no objections to the undeletion of the article (as per your suggestion) if you are able to fix it up to exceed existing notability guidelines, which essentially is the concern resulting in its deletion. And of course, sources are a must, and should be added shortly after restoration. Alternatively if you are writing from scratch and leaving the deleted edits as it is, that is also fine and I would suggest drafting on a userpage sandbox first. - Cheers, Mailer Diablo (talk) 10:40, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Much as it pains me to say it (hey, my lady and I were at that 1984 concert), I fear the venue simply lacks notability; it's just a local rock club named as a cultural reference to a rock movie. The coverage is all local, and trivial; there are no significant events linked to it. An impartial judge would say it's a speedy delete: no meaningful assertion of notability. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:06, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Mind if I make a few additional edits first? --Orange Mike | Talk 15:24, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Sun Prairie, Wisconsin=probable spam

It looks like spam. I think it should be deleted. The link was not about an official governement website, chamber of commerce, tourist, historical society, schools, etc. You may want to doublecheck to see if the user put any more links of that type in with the various Wisconsin local government entities. Thanks-RFD (talk) 11:30, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
