Tip of the moment...
Stop by the Reference Desk

Do you have a difficult question you can't find the answer to on your own? Or, would you like to take a break from editing and perhaps share your knowledge with others who have questions? If so, then take a trip to the Wikipedia reference desk to ask or answer those tough questions.

The Wikipedia reference desk works like a library reference desk; ask a question there and Wikipedia volunteers will try to answer it. This is great if you're doing research and need to know where to find a particular piece of information, or perhaps just want the answer to a trivia question. Note: Giving out legal or medical advice is prohibited, but they can point you towards relevant articles you can check for yourself.

If you need general help with creating and editing articles on Wikipedia, try Wikipedia:Questions or ask at the Help desk. New editors might find the friendly atmosphere at the Teahouse great for getting editing advice.

File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Orissa small.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. — neuro(talk) 16:24, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

DYKs

Not at present. At present I'm doing mostly grunt work sorting out infoboxes and population figures, starting districts/communes etc. Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:56, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh I did create Max Penson the other day. It needs some work though, probably needs rewording. Aside fomr the grunt work on geography I am heavily involved in transwikiying articles from other wikipedias with tags. Todat I'm doing Swiss painters. Mass sub stubbingI'm afriad if we want to improve the encyclopedia in the long term in terms of content. Matching up our categories with the foreign equivalents and starting the gaps. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:14, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

The Penson article could probably be expanded a great deal, I'd imagine there is a lot in Russian on him. I'll ask a Russian friend of mine on here to look into it. Now, back to blue linking the List of Swiss painters Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:23, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Carlos Solórzano could probably be a DYK. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:06, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Personal comment/request

Hello, I'm doing the GA Review for the Raja of Panagal article. It has been a pleasure to collaborate on this project. I decided to peruse your user page and I wanted to let you know that I am currently hosting an exchange student from Chittagong Bangladesh. He is here (In California) for the school year (August to June). It has been fascinating for my wife and I to learn about Bangladesh, its history, its deep ties to India, and to be exposed to more of the culture of the Indian subcontinent. He speaks Hindi but is fluent in English. I have really enjoyed the process of getting to know him, I have never been in such close proximity to someone from that part of the world. He has told my wife and I that we are a part of his family back home, which I know is a very big deal and an honor. Do you have any insight that would help me to better relate to him culturally? I know you are Indian and not from Bangladesh but I would assume that you have a more intimate knowledge of their culture and history than I would. He will be going home soon and I would like to take advantage of the time I have with him before he leaves. Thank you for your time and assistance with this. H1nkles (talk) 16:05, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments, it is much appreciated! Our guest is Muslim but does speak both Hindi and Bengali. He has a great affinity for rice and probably fish though we don't eat fish (primarily because neither my wife or I enjoy fish). He has a deep love of cricket, and could talk for hours on it. This has been very educational as I am an ignoramous when it comes to this game. I am greatly intrigued by the cultural impact the British had on the Indian and Bangladeshi cultures. Your information does help me to gain a stronger insight into our student, I do hope to someday visit this beautiful country and perhaps I will have the chance to see the most amazing India as well. Thank you again for your help. H1nkles (talk) 17:31, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Re:Raja of Panagal

This is a copied response from H1nkles talk page copied here to ensure receipt: Yes I saw that you use footnote 20 and 21 though I thought I only brought up sentences that relied on footnote 19, I could be mistaken though. It is totally fine if you have to wait a day or two to reply. Life takes precedence. H1nkles (talk) 18:10, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy

Just got back from wikibreak, so apologies for this delayed reply. At the time of reviewing the article, I had to ensure that it met the good article criteria, and so I made a list of suggestions in the GA review for copyediting of the article and neutralisation of its more obvious POVs (in peacock terms, weasel words etc). Not being well-acquainted with the subject of the article, I could not notice the finer nuances that you, being evidently more experienced than I, brought up after the listing. Had you brought them up at the time of the review, I would have certainly looked into them - as I did when I went through the peer review, in which you were involved. The editors at the time satisfactorily addressed all issues that I brought up, and the article was passed in acordance with existing guidelines for the same. That done, I am aware that the article still has some way to go before it can be considered for FA status, and that is precisely why I suggested a second peer review at the time of concluding the GA review, so that any outstanding issues can be sorted out. If you find my review unsatisfactory, feel free to ask for a reassessment. Thanks for bringing this to my notice, and good luck with the article! Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 10:47, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

re: Semi-protection

OTOH, we may not ask for semi-protection when the maintainer goes on a vacation unless that article is a regular target of vandals. Let me have a look at the policy though. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:23, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't read your earlier message properly. I think this should be no big deal, but the policy itself is silent about this. Guess, you can ask a regular (unlike me) admin to keep a watch on your pages. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 11:39, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Copy editing request

I was going to go through the (apparent) backlog at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests but discovered that the earliest request left there had been taken care of long ago. So I'm curious if you ever got the assistance you needed on Iyer. If so, it can be removed; not, I'd be happy to help. Recognizance (talk) 23:57, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, there were people who worked to remove all inappropriate sentences and wording. Thanks a lot for your offer.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 01:46, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
