@AmericanAir88: If you'd like, you can watchlist my newly created Articles and content page, which I will try to keep updated with content I am working on. If anything interests you, feel free to improve, expand, etc. Also pinging Anna Frodesiak, since she asked me some time ago what happened to my former articles page. Cheers, North America1000 15:26, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: Thank you! I will get busy on your list and view your contributions to see if there is a theme in an article you work on (Example: I filled in the rest of the refs for Diet Coke a while back) AmericanAir88(talk) 02:00, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @AmericanAir88: Don't forget that it works both ways, so feel free to suggest anything here you would like to collaborate upon as well. I tend to focus on Food and drink articles. North America1000 02:03, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: Thank you for the offer, you make a fantastic admin! I will try my hardest and dedicate my time not spend in the office to help improve articles you are working on. As for articles I am working heavily on: I am trying to improve the Energy drink article as I believe it could use neutrality and copy editing. My final goal is for GA but it needs a ton of work before that can be proposed. Thank you so much. AmericanAir88(talk) 02:07, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @AmericanAir88: I have made a note to work on this in the near future. In the meantime, check out the just newly-created Portal:Energy drinks. I'm doing a portal run today, but the energy drink article is now on my to-do list. North America1000 02:20, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: Thank you so much for helping me out with Energy drinks. My next question to you was going to be about making a portal! Thank you so much for the portal, it was very generous of you. If you ever need anything, just ask. AmericanAir88(talk) 02:23, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Portal image banner heights
@The Transhumanist: I have went through Template:Portal image banner and have tried various methods to set the height of the banner image I added to Portal:Korean cuisine, but nothing is working. I also used the overflow parameter in various methods, but cannot get the image to resize. The goal is to reduce the images height. So, requesting your assistance. Further instructions on the Portal:Korean cuisine page regarding this matter would be very helpful, as it's likely other users will encounter this issue. North America1000 21:17, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- First, I have to say, that that portal is making me hungry just looking at it!
- You had a typo in there (you specified "max-height" instead of "maxheight").
- Don't you just hate when that happens? :) — The Transhumanist 23:37, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: Got it. I went ahead and updated the documentation, so people will know that px is used (as opposed to em, etc.), (diff). North America1000 23:42, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Portal creation
I can't express just how happy I am that you've taken the plunge into portal creation. But I'll try: I am overjoyed!
Woohoo!
It blows me away that in many cases {{Basic portal start page}} almost instantly creates a complete portal. And now someone else besides me has experienced that. This is so cool.
But the conventional method is not quite instant. You still have to type or copy that code onto the page, and that takes precious time. Especially if you are waiting there while the new portal is generated.
Therefore...
I created a tool to speed up the process even more, that I've been using, and I thought you might be interested in it.
Unfortunately, there is a bug: it goes into an endless loop if you have WP:WikEd activated. Therefore, it is essential to turn off WikEd before using it! That's why I haven't told too many people about the tool: because I can't figure out how to fix that bug. Otherwise, the tool works great, and so, I thought you might like to try it.
The tool makes portal creation lightning fast.
It is this script: User:The Transhumanist/QuickPortal.js.
What it does is detects when you open a creation page for a new portal, and then inserts {{subst:Basic portal start page}}
, and puts the page into preview mode, ready for inspection, waiting to be saved. It works automatically, without having to click on a menu item. You just click on a red portal link.
When used with auto-tab-opening, it speeds up the process of portal creation immensely.
Using Firefox or Chrome, when you Ctrl+click on a redlink, the browser opens WP's editor in a new tab.
So (whith QuickPortal.js installed), if you create a list of portal redlinks, and Ctrl+click on 50 of them, you get 50 tabs each with a new portal ready for inspection. What I do is close those that aren't complete, and save the complete ones. Then I go on to another batch.
This works best when the tabs are created without focus being shifted to the new tabs. That is, when the focus stays on the page where you are clicking on the redlinks. That way, you can click on redlinks rapid fire.
I used to have some extensions that loaded tabs automatically, but those are no longer compatible due to Firefox's "upgrades". If you find a good one, let me know. I also use Chrome.
If you decide to try it, let me know how QuickPortal.js works for you.
Cheers, — The Transhumanist 02:37, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Aid in portal help
Hello NorthA,
I noticed you were focusing on portal creation and fixing. I want to help you with that so I am dedicated myself in addition to my normal cleanup to help do portals. I recently created the Banana Portal and would like you to look it over and explain if anything is not correct or if there is a certain style. I want to help build the food and drink portal category. Take your time, thank you. Your pal AA. AmericanAir88(talk) 23:17, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi AmericanAir88: I have performed a few edits for the portal:
- I created a redirect named Template:Bananas, which links to Template:Bananas and plantains. This served to populate the Selected general articles section, which feeds off the Bananas and plantains template. When the template name and the portal name are identical, the Selected general articles are instantly populated. However, since the names differed, creation of a redirect was needed.
- I added Wikiproject banners to the talk page.

- @Northamerica1000: Fantastic, thank you. Any category of portal you need help in creating? AmericanAir88(talk) 22:57, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- Having trouble with Portal:Blueberries as the template didn't give the code and there is no blueberry template. Any advice? AmericanAir88(talk) 23:10, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- AmericanAir88 The fix is to create a template titled Template:Blueberries, which can be populated using articles from Category:Blueberries. Then, the Selected general articles will automatically fill in. North America1000 23:14, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- Having trouble with Portal:Blueberries as the template didn't give the code and there is no blueberry template. Any advice? AmericanAir88(talk) 23:10, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
@Northamerica1000: Thank you so much. Any portal categories you want me to help you on? AmericanAir88(talk) 23:15, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- AmericanAir88: Not right now, as I'm working solo on these for the time being. Do you need any assistance in creating the template for the Blueberries portal?
- Also, note that when you created the Blueberries portal, you didn't substitute the creation template (I fixed this). The markup to use to correctly create is {{subst:Basic portal start page}}. This is very important, because otherwise the portal cannot be modified or expanded. North America1000 23:18, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah I noticed that I didn't substitute it. My mistake. I totally respect your space to work on these alone. I would greatly appreciate you helping me create my first template. I will need to learn as there are many food portals not yet created. Thank you so much. Message when you are ready to start. Thanks again. AmericanAir88(talk) 23:21, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

Philosophical question
Let's wax philosophical about food. :)
Eventually (or sooner than we might think), there will likely be hundreds of food portals.
Should all the food portals be listed on all the food portals?
Food for thought, — The Transhumanist 22:36, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: An idea is to create a new template based upon the {{Related portals2}} template, reducing the image size and font size by 1/3 of that used on the Related portals2 template, while also reducing the size of the box the portal links are contained in. This would take up less space, while retaining vital links to related portals. North America1000 01:50, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- I looked into this before, using substitutions of the Related portals2 template and then made various adjustments, but couldn't get it to reduce. I was able to get the font size and image size to reduce using the {{resize}} template, but I was unable to reduce the actual box size itself (which contains the portal information). In my view, the goal is to reduce the overall box size in addition to the image and link sizing. You are clearly adept at wiki code, so perhaps you may have a way to accomplish the desired shrinkage. North America1000 15:44, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- Like this?
To modify this, I had to clone the two templates that were daisy chained into it, and call those instead of the originals. Because editing the originals would change other templates besides the food template.
So, there are 3 templates involved here: Template:Food portal links horizontal, which calls Template:Related portals3 (new), which calls Template:Related portal item small (new). The last one has the size information in it, and you could easily tweak it. I basically halved all values, and included a font-size.
I'm sure you can handle it from here. ;) — The Transhumanist 16:55, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
P.S.: The changes made above are live, and show up in the food portals.
P.P.S.: Found Portal:Alcoholic drinks, Portal:Apples, Portal:Barley, Portal:Bottled water, Portal:Cereals, Portal:Chocolate, Portal:Cocktails, Portal:Crabapples, before I started falling asleep.
P.P.P.S.: Must find bed, before I pass out. :)
- @The Transhumanist: Thanks very much. I haven't used the call parameter before, and rather than fidgeting around with it, I figured you would be able to enact changes much more quickly. I have modified Template:Related portal item small a bit, because as it was, the text and icons were quite tiny. Check out how it's transcluded now on the Template:Food portal links horizontal page. I think this is just about right; the text is easily readable and the content of the icons is more discernable, but it significantly reduces the size of the box. Thanks again! North America1000 18:58, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- P.S. It's also working very well for Template:Cuisine portal links horizontal, which I am using in the cuisine portals (see below). North America1000 19:05, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
{{Cuisine portal links horizontal}}
Back to the philosophical issue...
What will happen when there is 1,000 food portals? — The Transhumanist 17:01, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: Well, for 1,000+, then a divided list could be used, such as that using elements of the {{portalbar}} template or the inline portal template, or other ways. See example below. North America1000 19:10, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Portalbar
... etc.
Inline
- Food portal
- ... etc.
No problemo, right? North America1000 19:10, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- That could work. Another possibility is to present a "Subportals" section. Also, keep in mind that we are looking for ways to automate all processes (automation is optional, of course). So, if you can figure out a way to make all of this automatic, please let me know. — The Transhumanist 23:46, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: If Food ports get very high in numbers, I think the {{portal bar}} layout would be the way to go. Keeps everything in one box, and it's a concise layout that still displays the graphics. North America1000 04:53, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- Can it be automated? That is, will it work inside {{Basic portal start page}} for making new portals? — The Transhumanist 06:08, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: Not sure about a way to automate it off the bat, other than working with Category:Food and drink portals somehow. However, I would want the images to stay in place, as opposed to having only links with no images. Personally, I think Template:Food portal links horizontal is okay and fine as it is for now. If it gets too long, I can manually create a list using the portalbar template. North America1000 16:13, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- Can it be automated? That is, will it work inside {{Basic portal start page}} for making new portals? — The Transhumanist 06:08, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- Nb. I created a new category, Category:Cuisine portals, which has reduced the length of Category:Food and drink portals. North America1000 16:29, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

Ready for an experiment?
Okay, I believe the list is now ready for one-click portal creation. I went through all the links I posted above, to make sure they have a corresponding cuisine template with matching title. To create these portals in one big batch, all you need to do is install User:The Transhumanist/QuickPortal.js and Ctrl-click on all of the redlinks in the list above. Click click click click click... They will all magically appear in tabs, in preview mode, ready for you to inspect them. The only requirement is that you have WikEd turned off. (Otherwise, the script will go into an endless loop in each tab -- I don't know why). If you decide to try it, let me know how it goes. ;) — The Transhumanist 07:25, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
It has been almost a week, so I went ahead and created the rest using the one-click method, except those that had only a few topics. Their navigation templates need to be beefed up, before a portal should be built for them. — The Transhumanist 04:46, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
- @The Transhumanist: I haven't used the script yet. I think I'm more comfortable creating ports on a one-by-one basis for now, rather than mass-producing them. North America1000 21:04, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
- Keep in mind, that it works well on one-shots too. ;) — The Transhumanist 21:14, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
Portal linkage
- @The Transhumanist: A major problem, though, is that a lot of these new portals that have been mass-produced are entirely orphaned, lacking even a portal link on their main pages in the See also sections. They also usually lack a portal link on the template pages.
- Without links to the portals, nobody is going to visit them, because nobody will know about them, defeating their purpose entirely.
- I have been adding links, but it takes time, and I don't foresee being able to add links for all of the new portals that have been created by myself. Also pinging AmericanAir88 about this matter. Below is a basic list of what should be done when a new portal is created, at the very least.
- Add a portal link to the portal's main topic page. This is typically done using the {{Portal}} template, and when content spills into the See also or other sections, then {{portal-inline}} or {{portalbar}} can be used.
- Add a portal link to the article's template (e.g. Template:Cajun cuisine). I typically also add the category if one is not present. This works well using: {{portal-inline|size=tiny|TOPIC NAME}}{{•}} {{category-inline|CATEGORY NAME}}
- Add a related portals template to the portal when applicable, such as for food and cuisine portals. ({{Cuisine portal links horizontal}}, {{Cuisine portal links horizontal}}). This has a benefit of immediately linking several related portals.
- Add a link to the new portal on related portals templates (e.g. adding a link for a new portal onto ({{Cuisine portal links horizontal}})
- Add relevant categories, when applicable, such as Category:Food and drink portals to food-related portals and Category:Cuisine portals to cuisine-related portals
- Bottom line, with no links leading to the new portals, they just won't be used. North America1000 21:28, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
- I've been working on these in batches, except for related portal links, which simply are not automatable/scalable. So far, I've placed links on the corresponding category pages to almost all of the new portals. And I have processed several hundred see also sections. Both using WP:AWB. I've also been placing more links at the time of creation.
- I'm also in the process of working on a script to place links leading to a portal at the time the portal is created. But it is a very tricky process to automate, and may take some time.
- But, for existing portals...
Mass linking to portals
To coincide with producing lots of portals, there are techniques for linking to lots of portals.
The main one is WP:AWB. The easiest portal links to place with AWB are on the corresponding category pages, as you can generally get them all in one pass. The others take multiple passes to get them all (due to missing see alsos, etc.).
Another method that works fairly well is multi-tab. First, make a list of portals that need links to them, then edit the list to be root articles or template names or category page title (don't forget the preceding colon). Then ctrl-click on them to make a tab for each. Then process each tab.
I hope these help speed up the process.
Keep up the great work! — The Transhumanist 23:22, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
@The Transhumanist: @Northamerica1000: I will get right on it with linking the portals. I will apply for AWB soon. Thank you for looking out for me, its very much appreciated. AmericanAir88(talk) 11:53, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now use TemplateWizard to edit templates. This works only with the 2010 wikitext editor and not in the visual editor or the 2017 wikitext editor. If you click on you can enter the information in a pop-up. You can turn on TemplateWizard in your beta feature preferences. [5]
Changes later this week
- You can choose to see edit conflicts in a two-column view. This is a beta feature. You can find it in your preferences. The interface for the two-column edit conflict will change. You can read more.
- When you edit with the visual editor you can use the "Automatic" citation tab. This helps you generate citations. You will now be able to write plain text citations or the title of a journal article or a book in this tab. This will search the Crossref and WorldCat databases and add the top result. [6]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 November. It will be on all wikis from 8 November (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 7 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Re: Union Square, San Francisco
Thanks for trying to help out with the images here. I have no idea why Beyond My Ken is so adamant, but I do find their behavior quite frustrating. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:08, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Another Believer: I've responded further on the article talk page, and would prefer to discuss there, to keep all in one place. North America1000 07:51, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Some old mobile browsers can use the watchlist again. This has not worked for a while. These browsers are called grade C browsers. This helps for example Windows Phone 8.1 with Internet Explorer and Lumia 535 with Windows 10. [7]
Problems
- You can choose to see edit conflicts in a two-column view. This is a beta feature. You can find it in your preferences. Users who use this view saw the edit conflict resolution page when they wanted to see a preview. This has been fixed. [8][9][10]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 November. It will be on all wikis from 15 November (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 14 November at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You can use the content translation tool to translate articles. The developers are working on a new version. One of the changes will be a maintenance category. Articles where users add a lot of text from machine translation without changing it will be in that category. This is so the community can review it. The users will also have been warned before they publish the article that it has a lot of unchanged text from machine translations. [11]

Orphaned non-free image File:Ricky's All Day Grill logo.png
Thanks for uploading File:Ricky's All Day Grill logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 03:36, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Redirect
Hi, does this redirect have any history I should know about? List of Turkish dishes I want to put up a list article there. Seraphim System (talk) 02:50, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Seraphim System: No history there other than that I created it and added a WikiProject banner to the talk page. Seems ripe for a new article. Out of curiosity, are you planning on merging content from the main article where the redirect presently points to? North America1000 08:32, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
- I am making a list with images formatted a bit like this List of breads, which I think it a very attractive format for food-related list articles. I'd like to merge some of the lists currently in the main article and replace them with prose content as well. Seraphim System (talk) 14:50, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Seraphim System: Nice, sounds like a plan. Have fun! North America1000 23:57, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Portals WikiProject update #022, 11 Nov 2018
Welcome AmericanAir88
Give a hearty welcome to AmericanAir88, who has adopted working on portals as one of his main purposes on Wikipedia. So far, he has created the following portals:
Way to go!
Where's Evad?
Evad disappeared from Wikipedia on October 18.
He has been, and will continue to be, sorely missed.
Hopefully, he is okay, on a Caribbean cruise or something.
The conversion continues
Portals of the old design, are slowly but surely being converted to the new single-page design.
One factor that has slowed things down is that for many sections, the section header call and section contents call are integrated into a template and buried in a lua module, locking them in on each portal. They have been that way for years.
This means that these sections can't be directly edited like the other sections on the same portal. So, search/replaces affect all the sections except those. So, upgrading headers on these portals, for example, misses the integrated sections and inadvertently results in 2 different header colors.
Before we can continue with the upgrade of these portals, the headers and section contents calls need to be restored to each portal, so that those can be edited in concert with the other sections on the portal, and worked on independently of each other.
This is underway, with a solution implemented on about 1/4 of the affected portals so far. Around 300 of them. The remaining 900 should be done within a couple weeks or so.
Going wide...
We now have banner-shaped pictures included in the introduction sections of 180 portals. The rarity of such pictures has made it difficult to find suitably narrow images for display across the tops of portals.
We have a solution for this, courtesy of FR30799386...
Most pictures are not banner-shaped. But, you can still use them as banners. Here's how:
{{Portal image banner|File:Blueberries .jpg |maxheight=120px |overflow=Hidden }}
Using both maxheight=120px
and overflow=Hidden
produces this:
Project's status
There are now 4,140 portals, with more being created almost daily. Prior to this project's reboot, portals were created at about the rate of 80 per year. Since April of this year, we've created about 2,600 new portals, or 32.5 years' worth at the old rate.
Of those new portals, about 3/4 of them need links leading to them. Almost all of them are linked to from the category system, but they still need links in article see also sections, at the bottom of navigation templates, and on the main portals list at Portal:Contents/Portals.
Of the 1500 portals created before the reboot, about 300 have been completely converted to the new design so far. About 1100 more have been partially converted, with intros, image slideshows, and associated wikimedia sections getting the most attention.
Discussion has resumed on the portal guidelines.
Until next issue...

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018
Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. |
Hello Northamerica1000,
- Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
- Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
- If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
- We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
- With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.
Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here)18:37, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can vote on proposals in the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can vote until 30 November.
- There is an A/B test for
sameAs
data. This is to make it easier to find the right information with a search engine. This changes the metadata for a wiki page. It doesn't change how the page looks. [12]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 21 November at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia wikis use templates to show readers there are problems with the content on some pages. For example if there are no sources or the page needs to be rewritten. The mobile website will soon show more information when you use these templates. Some templates may need to be updated. [13]
- The Education Program extension was removed from all Wikimedia projects. The database tables used by the extension will be archived. This will happen in a month. If you want the information on your wiki you should move it to a normal wiki page. [14]
