Not quite a wikibreak, but...

On your user page, you state "...up to summer 2019 I shall have less time for Wikipedia work". Summer's already over. Would you mind changing that? Interstellarity (talk) 16:45, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

No. I'll change it when I choose to, not on request. Thank you. Nick Moyes (talk) 20:02, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Nick Moyes,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 808 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:13, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Hot articles

Hallo Nick, I noticed you added a "Hot articles" list to Wikipedia:WikiProject British and Irish hills. How does that work - can any WikiProject have one, and if so, how? I tried experimentally adding it to a couple of WikiProjects and it didn't work, at least in "Preview" - might it have done if I'd saved the edit for real? I can't find any documentation about it, all a bit mysterious. Can you shed any light, please? Thanks. PamD 16:35, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Ah, I now realise it's run by hotarticlesbot and updated daily so wouldn't produce an instant effect. But I still can't find anything written about it - any pointers, please? PamD 16:39, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
@PamD: Funnily enough, I've only just this a moment ago posted a request for help on the Hot Articles feed for WP:WikiProject Mountains and WP:WikiProject Mountains of the Alps as these two projects share the same template, and I can't figure that out myself, even though for projects with their own template, it's not too hard. But the instructions are far from clear, I must agree with you. Here is my understanding of the process. Example 12 is up-and-running; whilst Example two is not yet working, and I'm awaiting a reply to my help request. Let me know how you get on:

Instructions for creating a new 'Hot articles' feed on a WikiProject page:

  • Go to your WikiProjects's main page (e.g. WP:WikiProject Derbyshire) and create a blank sub-page to receive your project's hot article feed. (a bot will populate it daily, once activated, at around 07:50 UTC) As it's unusual to crteate and save a blank page, you'll be prompted whether you really want to do this. You do!
Example 1: WP:WikiProject Derbyshire/Hot articles
Example 2: WP:WikiProject Mountains/Hot articles
  • Go to User:HotArticlesBot and follow the link in the 'Subscription' section to then go to User:HotArticlesBot/Config.json
  • That page shows you all actively subscribed WikiProjects with Hot Article feeds (latest at the bottom), but you cannot edit it yourself as it is a fully protected page. But note the six entries for each Project feed. You will need to modify these for your own Project. These entries are explained in the row labelled 'description' at the top of the table.
  • Now go to the Talk page at User_talk:HotArticlesBot/Config.json, click New Topic, and place an 'edit request', using the edit request template ({{edit fully-protected}}. The template should be completed so that it looks as follows: {{edit fully-protected|User:HotArticlesBot/Config.json|answered=no}}
Below the edit request, please your precise text you want adding to the page at User:HotArticlesBot/Config.json. You can use a previous edit request to help you. The text you add might look like this:
   "WikiProject Derbyshire": {
       "Category": "WikiProject Derbyshire articles",
       "Page": "Wikipedia:WikiProject Derbyshire/Hot articles",
       "Articles": 10,
       "Days": 7,
       "Orange": 5,
       "Red": 10
   },

These settings will give you a table showing 10 articles, the number of days to survey (max 7) for edits made to those articles in that WikiProject's category over the last seven days, and the cut-off point between orange and red background text for the number of edits to include. A popular topic would probably choose a much higher number than a fairly obscure one. You will probably also need to create a new WP:Category for your articles to be put into Category:WikiProject xxxxxxxxx articles where xxxxxxxxx is the name of the relevant Project.

Example 1: Category:WikiProject Derbyshire articles -had to be newly created
Example 2: Category:WikiProject Mountains articles -note that this category previously existed for this Project, yet as at the time of this post, is empty.

It may take a few days for your edit request to be implemented, then a further 24 hours for the bot to populate the 'hot article' page you created.

  • To insert that feed on the relevant Wikiproject page, just add the template in an appropriate section, either using its full WP: address or, if it is a sub-page directly under the Project page, use {{/Hot articles}} to insert it. Example 1:
16 edits Benjamin Bryan
7 edits Chesterfield Canal
6 edits Derby
5 edits 2024–25 Chesterfield F.C. season
4 edits Old Bolsover
4 edits Richard Arkwright
4 edits Philip Eyre Gell
4 edits Bakewell tart
3 edits Earl Sterndale
3 edits Deep Dale

These are the articles that have been edited the most within the last seven days. Last updated 19 December 2024 by HotArticlesBot.

Let me know if these instructions make sense as you follow them through. Note that I can't advise on setting up a Hot article feed where one WikiProject is a dependant of another with a shared template - that's beyond me at the present time. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 18:08, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

User:Clovermoss submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Nick Moyes to be Editor of the Week for his 10 year effort in helping newcomers adjust to Wikipedia. He is incredibly welcoming to new editors, going above and beyond normal to help, and is always willing to share his knowledge and experience. He is the top editor for the WP:Teahouse, making over 1,800 edits to the project page. He's also made improvements to the project itself and has contributed to many nuanced discussions in order to do so. Nick Moyes is also an adopter in the Adopt-A-User program, and I'm one of his three adoptees. Nick Moyes is a talented editor with expertise and interests in several areas. Falconry, Flora and Mountain climbing are just a few. Nick has also organised Glam events in RL, and generally promoted and supported Wikipedia in the real world. I have to be concise, even here, as Nick has made so many valuable contributions that it's almost impossible to summarize the quality of everything he's done.

Pinging you to this discussion as you previously commented on the topic at FAC and the FAC has not received that much input in terms of "support","oppose" or "no opinion". Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:25, 1 December 2019 (UT

@Jo-Jo Eumerus: I'm happy to support it. I'd quite like to work through and do some minor copyediting first, but may not have time to do it immediately. So as my one and only FA application didn't go through because it ran out of time, and someone closed it through what they perceived as inactivity (which was quite demotivating) I'll suppport it now, then try to work through it in odd moments. Kindest person of the year on internet

File:A beautiful reminder.png Most patient person I've met this year on internet!
Hi Nick!, as you can see I'm a little bit anxious but wanted to start this last month by thanking you for your patience and understanding and support you gave me when I asked about a thing you already know, and I want to share with you my achievement of the year!, I can now make eye contact with people when speaking, another step overcome!. Again, thank you and have a good start of new Year!  CoryGlee (talk) 20:47, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi CoryGlee! That's a very nice thing for you to say, so thank you. And that's a really brilliant achievement, and must have been quite a challenge for you to overcome at first. Well done, indeed. I'm sure making that step must reassure you that you can make the next one too, and the next and the next... ... All the best, and get in touch anytime you want further help or support. As we're now just into December, you're the first person I've felt able to wish a Merry Christmas/Happy New Year to! Kind regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 21:35, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Some help?

Some time ago when I first began editing on Wikipedia I noticed on your page you were accepting adoptees (this was a while back around the first of this year). I'm unable to figure out how to get back to that page... I've been editing for a while now but still have trouble getting my head around some of the rules. Specifically, I've been reading the rules related to 'No original research' and the related links to reliable sources and primary, secondary and tertiary source but sometimes the 'how to' apply these rules is where I run into trouble. When challenged I clearly don't really understand the difference as these rules apply to living persons biographies. If you don't mind mentioning the link if you remember I'd be most appreciative. :- ) LorriBrown (talk) 17:26, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Sorry, I think I've already found it...LorriBrown (talk) 17:44, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Hi, LorriBrown. I'm glad you've found it, as I wasn't confident I knew exactly which pages you were referring to. There are usually a handful of logically-named shortcuts to most policy or guidance pages, so it's often productive to type into the search box WP: followed by the best keywords or abbreviations you can think of relevant to that topic, and then checking the 'See also' section at the bottom of each help page for related topics. So WP:PRIMARY, WP:ORIGINAL, WP:SECONDARY, WP:NOR should all lead you to the same or similar pages. One tip is to look for the little 'shortcut' box in the top right side of the page, and try and remember its logical naming for the future. Another way is to copy paste any page name you encounter into a section of your userpage, or a subpage. You can even install a script to compile page names of interest into a sub-page. (Let me know if you'd like further details on how to do that).
I'm happy to help further if you need guidance. To be frank, I've felt a little guilty since you first approached me, seeking support. At the time I didn't see enough broad commitment to the wider aims of the Project to offer you my help, though I've since seen you giving just that commitment, and I felt I should have given you more time. I am sorry for that. I've had very little free time myself over the last 18 months to really offer adoption to anyone else, though things should start to be easing off soon. If you want further help or guidance on interpretation/application of policies and guidelines, just shout. All the best, Nick Moyes (talk) 23:39, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Hey Nick Moyes that was nice of you to say that! I get that and I can't really remember but I think I may have removed my name from the list. I put my name out there again and I'll wait to see if someone has the time. I can see that it could be challenging. There is so much to learn. LorriBrown (talk) 02:47, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
I removed my question which when I read it again it seems sort of long winded I think I'll try in the Teahouse. Thanks, LorriBrown (talk) 15:51, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Why

I see you edited out a flint water crisis sentence for "no citation" but your account says your a level 3 vandal and that would mean your telling people not to edit in no citation stuff but you do it. hypocrite — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrEmployee (talkcontribs) 00:52, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Ha ha! You got me going there. Nice one, MrEmployee. I assume you didn't really mean that comment seriously, did you? If you did, I'm afraid you've rather misunderstood what the little box at the top of my page userpage is doing. But not to worry. It's not there to report to the world that I am a "level 3 vandal" (I hope I never stoop so low). Instead, what it's doing is alerting me automatically to the overall level of vandalism across Wikipedia. When I see it's at level 2 or level 1, I drop what I'm doing and pop over and monitor live updates at Special:RecentChanges in order to protect the encyclopaedia from kids, vandals, malcontents and POV pushers, as well as correcting new editors who innocently make editing errors. I and others try to steer them all in the right direction, or get them blocked if they persist in causing trouble. The editor (you?) who added uncited content only got the lowest, gentlest notification from me (see here). You know, I'd never looked at my userpage in that way before - thanks for drawing it to my attention, and for registering for an account name to edit under. Best wishes, Nick Moyes (talk) 01:08, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi Nick; A Month Ago You Said...

"When I next get a chance to sit down at a proper pc and keyboard (rather than this miniscule phone) I'm going to paste our discussion..." and I'm wondering when you might get a chance, because I have a new article - my first - in my sandbox almost ready to go, but it too uses a text-over-image photo (an updated one of that which we were discussing) and I'm hoping to first get feedback that I think was going to result from your paste of "our discussion". I'm not in a great hurry and I think you're busy with renovations, but thought a quick reminder might help. All the best. Cheers, BrettA343 (talk) 17:03, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

Oops, yes, I'd completely forgotten. So much so, I'm going to have to reread our original discussion. Sorry about that. Nick Moyes (talk) 19:06, 14 December 2019 (UTC)
No worries, I'm not in a hurry, but I'll direct you to Mt. Lyell and Walter Peak for the updated image and its use - it's now shorter vertically to better distinguish it from the Mt. Lyell infobox photo, includes the 'L' in the Lyell number L1 - L5 and the text includes 'icefield' as per your suggestion, IIRC. TIA. BrettA343 (talk) 20:58, 14 December 2019 (UTC)
Right, so I've pasted in the discussion, as promised. I'm going to have to sit down and catch up on anything unsaid that I wanted to add there. (Just chase me if I forget!!). Nick Moyes (talk) 21:19, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well NM. MarnetteD|Talk 20:53, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Happy holidays

Next January will mark my first anniversary actively editing Wikipedia. I have learnt a lot during my journey as a Wikipedia editor and a teenager/young adult. I fight vandalism, help others at the Teahouse, almost graduating from NPPSCHOOL, and might become an AFC reviewer in the near future. I would be interested to know, what have you learnt this year editing Wikipedia? I edit Wikipedia because I care about the well-being of Wikipedia. I enjoy editing Wikipedia!! I fight vandals because I do not want Wikipedia to become the hub for vandals. I help others at the Teahouse because I want newbies to feel welcomed on Wikipedia. I also care about the issues that are facing the world such as climate change, war, and poverty. I know there is no such thing as a perfect world, but I want to help as much as I can. Besides donating money, what could I do to help our world become a better place? Have a think about this before responding. Best wishes, Interstellarity (talk) 23:39, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello Interstellarity. Thank you for your best wishes. Next January marks my tenth year of editing here and, like you, I have also learned a lot along the way. But the more I know, the more I realise I don't know. C'est la vie!
To make the world a better place, you have to ask yourself what your are rich in, and how much you want to commit. You may be rich in money, but you can be equally rich in knowledge, skills, time, commitment or passion. You don't have to be a Greta Thunberg and irritate stupid presidents to make a difference. You could campaign locally; sign and promote petitions, become an activist for a particular cause; do environmental volunteering work with your local 'Wildlife Trust' or equivalent, improve environmental articles on Wikipedia; encourage family and friends to plant wildlife-friendly flowers in their gardens; take steps to reduce your energy/material consumption; recycle more; use less. The list is endless, and no-one can do everything. Just find a way to do your bit. Then do a bit more.
Here's my Christmas 'best wishes' to you. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 00:04, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
@Nick Moyes: Thank you. I'm sure I can find something I can do. I hope life is treating you very well and look forward to editing in the next decade. Interstellarity (talk) 00:12, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Dream Cave

On 21 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Dream Cave, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when lead miners discovered Dream Cave in Derbyshire in 1822, they found it to contain the near-complete skeleton of a woolly rhinoceros? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Dream Cave. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Dream Cave), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

For all your hard work as an adopter in the Adopt-A-User program! I was rereading some of our adoption page last night, and I just kept smiling. Did you figure out what you were going to do with Room yet? Stuff like that helped me realize that it's not just newbies that can be indecisive and that every editor can continue to learn new things. I don't think I can thank you enough for all of your help! Clovermoss (talk) 15:13, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

Re: AvellanoAve.

I did some digging around on this user. It turns out that they're a LTA user with long records across various Wiki projects, including the Spanish and English Wikipedias. On the former project, they went by "Avellano3" until they were blocked late last month; a few hours later they picked up where they left off using the name "AvellanoAve." MO is the same across all projects: disruptive editing, spurious POV assertions, poor grammar/orthography (including at the Spanish Wiki), edit warring when reverted, etc. Pinging @AustralianRupert: as a courtesy since user in question had contacted them. --CurryTime7-24 (talk) 16:07, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

@CurryTime7-24: Interesting stuff ou've dug out there. If they return to editing I'd suggest you make a report at WP:SPI. Nick Moyes (talk) 16:07, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

User:Karenberrios

Hello Nick Moyes, just a quick question about the ban you made on the account User:Karenberrios. She was banned under the guise of promotional username, but that appears to possible be a woman named Karen Berrios (again, possibly). Per WP:ORGNAME, I'm not sure how her username violated the any guidelines. She also made no edits that included any promotional content. Not being inquisitive, not asking for a rationalization, but it looks like she was honestly trying to improve WP. Maybe I'm wrong, dunno. --PerpetuityGrat (talk) 00:51, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Granted... on their website, named after herself, is actively selling merchandise.. maybe I'm just digging myself in a hole. --PerpetuityGrat (talk) 00:53, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
Hi PerpetuityGrat. It's absolutely ok to query the rationale for an admin action to block another user. In this instance it wasn't the visible edits that were the issue, but the edits caught by our abuse filters see here. If you click 'details' for each one, you'll appreciate the self-promoting edits they were attempting. I hope this explanation helps justify my actions. Thanks for asking. Nick Moyes (talk) 07:00, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the explanation! Don't know a lot that goes into the ban process and honestly had no idea that this tool exists haha. Thank you for being positive and straightforward with me :) --PerpetuityGrat (talk) 12:42, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
@PerpetuityGrat: no problem at all. Being interested in how and why things work (and being willing to question and/or challenge decisions) is all part of the community approach and perhaps an early sign that one day you might yourself want to look more 'under the hood' and help out with some of the administrative work that keeps this place running as smoothly as possible. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 13:25, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Sheilah ReStack

Please note that this is an autobiography. I thought we didn't allow people to write articles about themselves? Also, when trying to place the template on the Draft talk page according to the documentation, it kicks back an error message: "Peer review is disabled for draft articles. These articles should be improved directly, and discussion should occur on the talk page or with reviewers at articles for creation." ♟♙ (talk) 16:15, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

I've no idea from looking at your signature who you are. Any chance of fixing it? But see Wikipedia:Autobiography to appreciate that it is 'strongly discouraged' but not disallowed. Nick Moyes (talk) 16:19, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
WP:SIGNATURE says "A customised signature should make it easy to identify your username", but it doesn't say it's required. In any case, clicking on my signature takes you to my talk page, allowing you to see my account name if you need it. Again, I just want to point out that you (I'm sure unintentionally) steered this editor in the wrong direction regarding peer review, and their attempts to obtain a peer review have gone awry (as seen from their edit history). I attempted to do it for them correctly to be helpful, and received the error message I noted above. So now I'm wondering how are they to receive feedback on their autobiography? Fixing their peer review error is, unfortunately, beyond my skill level. ♟♙ (talk) 16:46, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
If you would kindly take the time to check their (and my) contributions, you will see that I had nothing whatsoever to do with any edit of theirs pertaining to peer review. That happened before you CSD-ed the article, and before I got involved. The easy way to help an editor is to drop by their talk page and given them a few pointers. I removed your CSD G11 tag because it was placed in error, in my view. Feel free to read WP:G11 to appreciate that 'unambiguous' is the key issue with CSD. I don't believe it was 'unambiguous', so your proper route should have been WP:AFD. I draftified the page to give them time to work on meeting WP:NBIO or WP:NARTIST, simple as that.
I don't care if you choose to push our policies/guidelines on a silly username. Sometimes one can simply be too clever for one's own good. It'd be great if you addressed it, especially if you plan to engage with new editors. I'm not telling you to do so - just advising it. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 22:41, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
PS: I've now contacted the user directly. (see here). Nick Moyes (talk) 23:15, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi !!! So im trying to decipher all the advice reciphed, I am a student making a wikipedia page for one of my old professors and i thought it would be easier to use her username. Is that why her page got deleted? there are other wikipedia pages for other artists up and I was hoping to just do something like that. Is it still autobiogrpahical if I'm writing it for someone else? [[User:Sheilahrestack] sheilahrestack]] (talk) 07:23, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

@Sheilahrestack: The page did not get deleted, it's at Draft:Sheilah ReStack. I simply moved it and deleted all the promotional gobbledgook from it. As you've admitted not not being that person, I urge you to abandon your account, forget the password and never use it again, and simply create a completely new account that does not mislead people. You can continue working on the draf t with that new account, but it would be a biography, not an autobiography, of course. You should still declare your Conflict of Interest on your userpage, and recognise that this is an encyclopaedia, not a place to write mildly sycophantic art-twaddle about people. Just stick to what reliable, independent sources have said, though do so in your own words, and definitely using Plain English to help establish Notability. . Sometimes less is more, too. Hope this helps, Nick Moyes (talk) 00:36, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

I think there’s an edit war

Hi Nick, I'm very glad to see you're an administrator. I need the help of one. I stumbled across a situation on an article, You Signed Up For This, where a user appears to be engaging in an edit war. They are repeatedly moving a page. I tried filing a report at the noticeboard, but I found the instructions to be very complicated-- too complicated to follow. What do you think should be done? Helen (let’s talk) 22:07, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

@HelenDegenerate: I was just off to bed when I stopped to check your notification (I really wish I hadn't!). There seem to have been a couple of admins already involved with this one, but we cannot accept either disruptive edit-warring across two separate pages or having two articles with extraordinarily similar content. The first article date takes priority in my view (irrespective of how it is titled), and the subsequent one should be a redirect created to it. Unless I've grossly messed it up, the closed consensus is already for retention of the spelling with a lower case 'for'. Having reverted one of them to its redirect form and given a short block and explanatory note to Novaredant, I saw that two IPs were continuing the edit warring, so I felt it appropriate to not only block them for a week, but to extend the original 24 hour block to a week for block evasion. I also felt it necessary to make my first 'admin-only' protect of the redirect to stop this silliness.
I think you made the right decision to raise it with an admin, rather than to get sucked into an edit war yourself - t though you very nearly missed me, so WP:ANI might have been a good place to get this one dealt with - was that the page you struggled with? Anyway, two hours later and I'm now off to bed as I'm in UTC+1 here! Nick Moyes (talk) 00:24, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for doing this, Nick. I had no idea this even happened until just now. I was one of the editors who originally moved the page to where it is, and participated in the discussion on the talk page. I didn't think this editor would start edit warring, trying to restore the article at the title with the upper-case "F", blank the original article and try to get it deleted, and now potentially evading their block with IPs from Indonesia because of a disappointment at the consensus not going their way. They've gone off the deep end over this. Ss112 01:10, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Hi again! Thank you very much for helping out. By the way, the page I struggled with was Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. There were so many invisible comments on the report form, it was very confusing to fill out (so I ditched it). I may be smart, but I'm not that smart. Helen (let’s talk) 17:00, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) HelenDegenerate, easiest way to report at the edit warring noticeboard is to use Twinkle. While on the editor's talk page, click the Twinkle menu and select ARV. In the report type dropdown, select Edit warring, then just fill in the fields. (Took me awhile to discover that capability in Twinkle.) Schazjmd (talk) 17:15, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Good tip Schazjmd. Using Twinkle makes things so much simpler. I don't think I've ever needed to report anyone at that noticeboard, so those instructions are unfamiliar to me too. @HelenDegenerate: it's never easy to report anyone in 'the heat of the moment' if you first have to wade through lots of unfamiliar instructions. Should you ever want to learn new skills and practice warning/templating/reporting people in different ways, feel free to get in touch. Providing I'm forewarned and am free, I'd be happy to be used as a guinea pig user for you to to practice warning or reporting. I've seen you developing your interests in the administrative side of Wikipedia and if (as a relatively new admin myself) I can help you further your skills, I'd be only too happy to do so. More on maid abuse

Hi Nick, I saw your feedback from the Teahosue and am currently in the process of applying it. I moved the Prevalence section near the top and removed the list of ways to torture a domestic worker. It is really starting to look like an article. You also said to move some of the content from Domestic worker to this article. I noticed there was a large section about high-profile maid abuse cases. Should I include a section summarising those cases? Thanks, Helen (let’s talk) 20:42, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

@HelenDegenerate: Yes, it was already looking pretty good, and getting rid of the instructional list would be good! I confess to not looking in great detail at the Domestic worker article, but felt there were too many examples from one country there. I presume your article is intended not to relate specifically to one country, but I thought you could delete and move some of that detail into your article and use a {{Main article}} template to link across to a country subsection (assuming all the high profile cases were from one country). When I first started looking at your draft, I thought to myself "why that title?" before appreciating it really is 'a thing' in certain parts of the world. I also wondered if there are any examples of men experiencing such abuse, which could be used to show that the term isn't necessarily gender-specific? Sorry if my reply is a bit waffly- but I'm sure you'll do good job with it. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 21:06, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
So far, I haven't come across any examples of violence against male domestic workers, which is why I titled the article 'maid abuse'. I'm certainly thinking about making a section for notable cases. Would it be okay if I copied the cases from the Domestic worker article into my sandbox, then removed the content from the article? Or is that a copyright infringement? Helen (let’s talk) 21:15, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
Being bold, yes, that would be OK. Make sure you give credit to editors if you copy from other articles (then ensure you WP:MOVE your sandbox, rather than just copy/paste the article contents so that you retain the edit histories and credits to other authors. (I'm not suggesting you credit individual authors; just link to the article you took content from).There's good advice at WP:COPYWITHIN and at WP:SPLITTING. Being somewhat 'less bold' you could raise your intentions on the talk page at Domestic worker, linking to your sandbox as you rightly did at the Teahouse, and seeing if anyone objects to your proposal, or offers alternative ideas for you. The choice is yours. Good luck. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:34, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
I have published Maid abuse to article space, having felt it was ready. As for copying from other articles, I gave credit to the authors by using the phrease "copied content from Domestic worker; see that page's history for attribution". Helen (let’s talk) 01:11, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Genre warrior at Kid Ink

Hello, Nick. Could I persuade you to look at/forcefully warn/block 75.130.178.42? They've been edit-warring at Kid Ink, insistently adding an unsourced genre R&B (while simultaneously removing {{flatlist}} usages from the infobox), rarely with ES, never explained. Their battle with User:Binksternet at Jeezy is apparently more heated, judging from the edit summaries. Thanks, — JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 18:08, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

This person is acting like Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/MusicLover650 who mostly uses Florida IPs but also some other East Coast US locations. Binksternet (talk) 18:14, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
@Binksternet; @JohnFromPinckney Thanks, guys. I'm a really bad choice of admin to ask to intervene about warring over music genres and such like. However, I'm not prepared to see that sort of abuse in edit summaries from anyone. So they've got a few days block from me for now. Nick Moyes (talk) 18:39, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
