Los Angeles Composers of African American Gospel Music: The First Generations

Hi MLG, First, let me compliment you on your most excellent essay on writing women into Wikipedia! Second, would you be able to obtain a copy of the journal article Los Angeles Composers of African American Gospel Music: The First Generations by Jacqueline Cogdell Djedje in American Music Vol. 11, No. 4 (Winter, 1993)? I want to create an article on the notable gospel singer Cora Juanita Brewer Martin-Moore. I think this article will help. Thanks for checking into this for me. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:48, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

@WomenArtistUpdates: Thank you about the essay! As for the article, you can read it on JSTOR for free by creating an account. Click the button that says "Read Online (Free)." This will prompt you to create an account. Click "Get Started." Then Register for My JSTOR. You can read 6 articles for free this way a month. :) If you still have trouble accessing it, I'm able to see it and can find a way to get you the full text. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:09, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
@Megalibrarygirl: Thanks for the guidance. I was reluctant to sign up - I don't know why. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:17, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
@WomenArtistUpdates: anytime! :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:22, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

The Sustainability Initiative

Hello Megalibrarygirl/Archives/2019: An invitation for you to check out the Sustainability Initiative, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of the Wikimedia projects. If you're interested, please consider adding your name to the list of supporters, which serves to express and denote the community's support of the initiative. Thanks for your consideration! North America1000 10:36, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for the info, Northamerica1000 I am concerned about sustainability. Right now, I'm not even sure what kind of planet we're leaving our kids and grandkids and that is scary. :( Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:32, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Well, glad to hear that others care. In today's lackadaisical society of infotainment and entertainment news hype, viral videos, cell phone zombies, and other nonsense, it's refreshing to hear your standpoint. Environmental matters don't get much press, because people tune out, and media makes less on advertising, so media focuses on trivial matters nowadays instead, such as the price of a dress that a celebrity wore. North America1000 04:06, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Tell me about it, Northamerica1000! I'm not a fan of all of that, either. Though, I have to say that the kids these days seem to care. I suspect there are a lot that both care about who is wearing what, and still want a better world. (I hope so!) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 22:35, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Well, thanks for caring, and be sure to let any wiki friends you know who may be interested about the initiative; sharing is caring! North America1000 23:42, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Too right, Northamerica1000. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:59, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Article assessment

Hi, MegaLibraryGirl, My mentor, montanabw, suggested you. I know you from the Women in Red Project, you helped me set up the Rodeo list. After an editor, SWP13, downgraded the Wikiproject class on my 'Precious" award winning article Mary Walker (rodeo) Talk:Mary Walker (rodeo) from C-Class to Start-class, it made me wonder. I discovered an eager editor had been working weeks on assessing mostly WikiProject Women articles. After reading on User talk:SWP13#John Clarence Webster and User talk:SWP13#Start class? on her talk page, I visited the Webster page. The author was right; his page was not a stub class; nowhere near it. I wrote up some explanation and changed it to a C-class. NEW INSERT Talk:John Clarence Webster No real responses. This morning, the Webster author responded to me on my talk page. User talk:Dawnleelynn#Reassessment. I also got some information from SWP13 about her intentions, on her talk page User talk:SWP13#Links to DAB pages on your User page. You want to page down where she talks about having started with 7,000 and down to 5,000 now. Also mentions wanting to get to the top 1000 in the wiki editor rankings. Today, she went right back to the same way of assessing articles, only stubs and starts. I looked at articles in the first page of contribs and there are articles that are C-class quality being assessed as Start-class again. Maybe she will listen to an admin? Thank you for listening. Btw, it seems like many of these articles have not been assessed before. Oh and happy birthday, not a great present. I know you do a lot for Wikipedia though. I volunteered for two hours at our library here today. Anyway, she is not going to listen to me about the assessments, perhaps she might listen to you since you are an admin? That's alot of articles. Sorry so long, tried to make it concise. dawnleelynn(talk) 00:02, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

dawnleelynn what you wrote made sense. SWP13 is doing a ton of work and I'm glad to see them adding authority control. I'm going to loop in Ritchie333 who assesses articles more often than I do to also take a look. I can probably do more tomorrow, but I'm calling it a night fir editing over here. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:50, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
That's understandable. I don't know time zones, etc. She is doing alot of work as you say. I don't want to dissuade her from doing work, just ensure that the work being done gets more of the correct classes assigned to the articles. Of course we appreciate her incentive. Thanks! dawnleelynn(talk) 02:14, 7 February 2019 (UTC) p.s. I forgot to include Talk:John Clarence Webster. I added it above where it says new insert.
Looks like Ipigott has had a look and re-assessed the article as B-class. Given the article is 15K of prose, looks well written and cites sources extensively, this seems a fair assessment. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:46, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
I also see that SWP13 has been doing lots of useful work on WiR articles and their talk pages but in some cases has downgraded assessments owing to factors such as lack of birth and death information or sources which have become dead links. That can be pretty frustrating for contributors who have spent a lot of time and effort on developing detailed biographies. May I suggest that more consideration is given to the automatic assessments provided by the ORES tool. Rosiestep is a keen ORES user and has been providing lots of assessments of WiR pages on the basis of its ratings. She also gives instructions on how to install it here. I have found it very useful myself, especially for applying Start or C ratings to new articles or stubs. Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 10:50, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
I find WP:RATER quite useful to manage WikiProject ratings. It shows the ORES-predicted rating and can update multiple templates at once. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:20, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
"...it's like putting on a pair of glasses and being able to see things more clearly...."
I have dropped a note on SWP13's talk page as I see they are vexed about their work getting deleted. Possibly they've moved towards "busy work" knowing they won't get "told off" for it with deletion templates; hopefully this will encourage them to go back to the writing part of the project. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:31, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
dawnleelynn, that's a really nice article on Mary Walker, and hi to Montanabw. Since installing the ORES tool, which Ipigott menitons above, I've relied on AI to re-assess >1,000 (mostly women writers) biographies. While I don't agree 100% of the time with the AI prediction, I mostly do agree. When I do agree, I paste the ORES predictive statement into the talkpage Edit Summary and change the assessment in the wikiproject templates. When I don't agree, I paste the ORES score into my edit summary, add what I think, and then update the wikiproject templates with my rating. I would encourage you to install the tool so that you can see for yourself the AI predictive class of every article you view; it's like putting on a pair of glasses and being able to see things more clearly. As for the Mary Walker article, the ORES predicted quality is "GA (4.21)". In fact, on the article history page, you can see that it's been rated at GA quality since the edit on: 11:26, June 9, 2018. I'm not sure what methodology SWP13 is using, so I don't feel I can comment on that. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:02, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
@Ipigott, Rosiestep, and AntiCompositeNumber: thank you for the help with this! I didn't know about rater. Maybe that will also help you out, dawnleelynn, too. I'm going to install it! Also, I hope that SWP13 tries it out, too. It will definitely help them reach their goals faster! I find rating pages to be un-fun work, so anything to help with that is welcome! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:05, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
>>Hi all,

Glad you are monitoring some pages. I mostly assess WikiProject with class that is blank. I assess the page as stub or start. Feel free to upgrade to higher level (C, B, GA,..) if you wish. I rarely down grade unless it needs attention in bad/rotted links or for other reasons. Sometimes, it can be a mistake! Sometimes, I stop to smell the roses and put in extra efforts by adding contents and references. No need to ask for approval or demand why. I just wanted articles to improves just like you. SWP13 (talk) 18:37, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

@Ipigott, Rosiestep, AntiCompositeNumber, SWP13, and Ritchie333: Well, thank you all for your amazing feedback and advice. Thank you for the compliment on my article Mary Walker, Rosiestep. It was for Women in Red. I'm very excited to learn about these tools and I will install and figure the best for my purpose. Thanks for the edit assessment on Mary Walker, Ipigott. I think I always shoot for one class lower to be safe. Now one of these tools actually assesses Walker at GA, what a remarkable thing. I have done the assessment of all of the rodeo articles twice now, and it's no fun, as discussed. I'm excited to use a tool that assists, and I encourage you too SWP13. Thought SWP13, just because the assessment is blank, does not mean the article is only a stub or start class. The assessment table is the guide, where did you hear otherwise? I will be trying them out on some of the articles I created. Wonder what it would do with a list article though? Anyway, thanks again, and happy trails to all! dawnleelynn(talk) 20:08, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
AntiCompositeNumber, I didn't know about Rater, but I've just installed it and it seems to be wonderful. I really like doing gnome-ish work every once in a while, such as talkpage template updates, so this will be a big help to me. Thanks! --Rosiestep (talk) 01:22, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber and Rosiestep: I have tried to get the scripts going. To install both. I have somewhat of a background in programming. Must be a Wikipedia thing. This is the first time I've tried to set up my user script file. Any help appreciated. I followed the directions, but have the error message, "There is no skin "Common". Custom .css, .json, and .js pages use a lowercase title, e.g. User:Foo/vector.css as opposed to User:Foo/Vector.css." Couldn't even install the script installer. dawnleelynn(talk) 02:10, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
Hmm, I'm not super technical dawnleelynn, so I don't know how to give guidance on this because it might be different based on the skin you are using. But for me, I go to User:Rosiestep/common.js, add the script on the next available line, and then clear my cache. Maybe AntiCompositeNumber has a better explanation? --Rosiestep (talk) 02:28, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
Dawnleelynn, MediaWiki will only automatically run javascript on certain user pages. User:Dawnleelynn/Common.js won't work because Common.js needs to be lowercase. If you move the page to User:Dawnleelynn/common.js, it will load. User:Dawnleelynn/vector.js is at the right location but will only work if you are using the default Vector skin. You only need to use one of these pages though. The other problem is that line 2 on both pages needs a ); at the end to be valid JavaScript. Once you fix that line, the scripts should load, but you may have to bypass your cache first.
Rosiestep, I'm glad it's working for you! I've definitely found that having a good tool to do a simple task makes me more likely to do that task. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 03:03, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber and Rosiestep: Ba da bing, Ba da boom. All I did was make the C lowercase in the file name and add the ); in the one line it was missing. And cleared the cache in Google. Boom both scripts were working. Checked the article I wanted, it was set at Start-class, which I knew was incorrect. Both scripts rated it as a C-Class. Nice! Thanks a bunch. Have time to play around with these tomorrow. Thanks a bunch to both of you! dawnleelynn(talk) 03:55, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
Today's top tip - if you're struggling to get a script installed, ask an Interface admin such as Cyberpower, Enterprisey or Galobtter, and they can help set it up. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:58, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

Contact on whatsapp

Hello, megalibrarygirl! I spoke to ritchie333 in the London meetup and am interested in having contact on WhatsApp. Is thus alright?

Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 15:26, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Sure, WhisperToMe. Whatever works best for you. Email me first and I'll get you set up. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 03:23, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Documenting WIR stuff on Facebook

What counts as "mentioning on Facebook" for Women in Red? A friend was at a conference at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, posted a picture of herself with Shubulade Smith here and I thought, "oooh, we'll have an article on that, thanks". Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 22:52, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

I'm not sure, Ritchie333. I don't really use Facebook anymore. Penny Richards might have more info. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:19, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
It's mostly how we keep track of publicizing new editathon articles off-Wiki, to avoid repeats. I add "pin" when articles with pictures have been pinned to our Pinterest boards, for example. Penny Richards (talk) 01:11, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Julia Bascom

Hi Megalibrarygirl, just noticed that you have taken an interest in the Julia Bascom page. I think the request for deletion has its roots from off-wiki (Twitter) in two areas: 1) A group of anti-autistic rights critics who go by the name of the Autistic Dark Web. & 2) a counter-reaction to criticism to a Alex Oates play called All In a Row. I hope this info is of some help to you,thanks.Chricon79 (talk) 05:34, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

I know that happens, sometimes, Chricon79. If you think that a lot of traffic is going to be driven from Twitter, we can post that template the one that states that AfD isn't a vote on the discussion... I don't know the name of it, though. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:38, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Women in Red - References

Hi Megalibrarygirl. I have been working on a Draft:Katherine_Hughes_(activist) from a red link in Women in Red. I'm still working on general formatting and creating running prose for the draft itself. I have been using several electronic sources to help me do that, but even though I have access to my local library, the library itself doesn't have one print source about Hughes that looks like it would be incredibly useful for referencing information about her as it is a print biography of her life. The title of the book is: Katherine Hughes: A Life and a Journey. The book is written by Pádraig Ó Siadhail and the publisher is Penumbra Press. Do you have any advice on how I might be able to obtain a copy or contact someone who has one? Clovermoss (talk) 18:00, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Clovermoss to start with I've found a review of the book on EBSCOhost that does provide some biographical information. I can give you access to the full text of the article if you email me. Looking at WorldCat, there are no libraries near me that have a copy. You can try doing an Interlibrary Loan at your library. There are several copies at Canadian universities. The book seems to be out of print and believe it or not, a copy is for sale on Amazon for $136! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 03:16, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
Clovermoss: Hope you don't mind my intervening here but it looks to me as if there are several rich accounts of Hughes on which you could base an article. For example HUGHES, KATHERINE (Catherine) ANGELINA, History finally recognizes Katherine Hughes, and Profiles of Irish-Canadians: Katherine Angelina Hughes. For a Wikipedia biography, these appear to provide more than enough information. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:19, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Oh, okay! I thought the Internet sources I had were pretty good, I was just wondering about the book. There was a different book I was able to check out at my library though that deals with her and the other 15 female journalists who covered the St. Louis World Fair. Clovermoss (talk) 14:54, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
As for interlibrary loans, that might work. Is there any chance there's a copy or two in Ontario? Clovermoss (talk) 15:14, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: it looks like there is a copy at the University of Toronto here. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:27, 17 February 2019 (UTC) (fix @Clovermoss:

2019 Presidents Day protest

2019 Presidents Day protest, if you happen to be interested. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:53, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi Another Believer! I did some quick and dirty ref cleanup. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 04:21, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
Amazing! Thank you. I went offline, then was pleasantly surprised upon my return. I'm going to try to expand the prose similar to Not My Presidents Day, and I don't think this will actually take too long. Coverage seems to be a bit less detailed at the local level this time, which is fine, but I'd love to add organizing bodies, notable attendees, crowd sizes, etc, as possible. If you're interested in tag-teaming this one to GA, let me know, otherwise, thanks again for your help! ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:38, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
@Another Believer: I'll see if I can add anything else tonight. I'd be glad to help you out in any way. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:54, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

I'm sticking this here in the hopes that you, or Ritchie333, or one of your page stalkers might be interested in working on an article of the first Afro-Jamaican to be knighted by the British Crown. It would be a companion piece to an article I am working on for his wife Edris Allan. I was completely shocked that neither had an article, but I think they would make a great double-hook DYK for Black History Month. Tons of sources: [1] and [2]; [3] and [4]; [5]; [6] SusunW (talk) 19:57, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

I'd be happy to help, SusunW! Have you started a draft yet? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:31, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
Haven't done anything on him yet and am worried with "all the other stuff on my plate right now" doing justice to them both will be hard. As I am gathering sources on her, obviously am finding sources on him, so I just stuck them all together when I posted this on your page. Thanks! SusunW (talk) 22:40, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
I know what you mean, SusunW. I will help with the article. Let's put together a draft. I'm going to be working briefly on the golf course Renee Powell's family owns: it's the first black-owned golf course in the US and my folks were able to visit and take pictures for me. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:22, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Very cool! I'll just keep putting sources I find here. [7],[8] And maybe Ritchie333 or someone else more versed in "titles" can explain what the heck a Bachelor Knight (I am sure it isn't a movie) is? — Why is it Bachelor? He was very married, so does this somehow mean stand alone? not part of an "Order"? Only one time shot? Nobility is soooooooo confusing. SusunW (talk) 17:29, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
I can haz autoconfirmed and haz admin, so I skipped draft and went straight to mainspace :-) He clearly meets WP:POLITICIAN having been appointed to a seat on national government. As for why it's called a "Knight Bachelor", it dates back to the Middle Ages, when "bachelor" simply meant someone too young or poor to lead an army under his own banner, as opposed to a Knight banneret who did. It acquired its other meanings later on - somebody not old enough to have a banner was probably also unmarried, and so the name transferred over. It much later became the euphemism for homosexuality. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:25, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
Yay! Thank you Ritchie333, yes, his notability wasn't in question to mind mind at all—Leader in changing Jamaican immigration law; developing the Land Settlement System and the Unemployment Relief scheme; instrumental in drafting the constitution of 1944; chair of West Indian and Jamaican delegations to General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the Havana Conferences ... Now I have to finish her so we can do the nom before 7 days expire on him. ;) (Ironic euphemistic use considering the movie linked above and rumours about him.) SusunW (talk) 21:13, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
I can't keep up with you, Ritchie333 and you SusunW! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 01:34, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
LOL Sue. And here I was thinking how slow I was. DYK nom is here: Template:Did you know nominations/Edris Allen, Harold Egbert Allan. Ritchie333 feel free to tweak or add alts. SusunW (talk) 20:27, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
I missed this, I was busy taking my kids to Sandwich to buy a sandwich. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:57, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
