Great profile in Business Insider, congrats and great user page you have. I like the chronology with the link to articles on what you have been up to. I may copy that. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 20:08, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): Thanks yourself! I mostly kept it around for my own benefit--spring 2012 was a crazy time for me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:04, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
I got to spend a lunchtime with Oliver Sacks at and American Chemical Society tradeshow. My trick was to hang out with his wrangler during the book signing, and when the break came she introduced me to him, and he invited me to walk around the show with them during the lunch break. It was a great hour. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 00:09, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Category:X-language websites

Can you explain why any of "Category:X-language websites" or the "Category:X-language media" you created to categorize them, are appropriate? — Arthur Rubin (talk) 22:34, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

@Arthur Rubin: I don't understand what you mean by them being appropriate. There are schemes for Category:Mass media by language and Category:Websites by language (and albums, books, songs, operas, newspapers, films, etc...) —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:40, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
They may be appropriate schemes, in general, but that doesn't mean categories that should be empty should necessarily be created. A quick scan shows about 79 of the websites categories have only one entry, most of which are probably DMOZ. Furthermore, Category:English-language websites would be unmanageable if maintenance were attempted, as most articles in Category:Websites [and subcategories] should be in it. Category:English-language media makes a little more sense, but not much. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 22:59, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps DMOZ, Wikipedia, and other multilingual WikiMedia websites, should be placed in a new category Category:Multilingual websites, and the individual categories be reserved for websites which are primarily in that language, possibly with one or two others. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:03, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
@Arthur Rubin: I don't really mind some kind of standard as long as it's applied regularly. Do you know of standards regarding other media? —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:05, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
Not really, but I don't know where to check for or propose such standards. The question of whether DMOZ should be in the -language websites categories is a matter for the DMOZ editors (sorry, I mean editors of the article DMOZ, not editors of DMOZ), even if guidelines for the categories are established. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:07, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

@Arthur Rubin: Well, you could check the Manual of Style, help pages on categorizing, or relevant projects like WP:MASSMEDIA. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:08, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

I'm going to have to take off shortly. (In fact, I should already have gone.) I won't take any further action for at least 8 hours, and I will check for projects. In general, though, "English-language X" is a questionable category on en.Wikipedia, as most X will be English-language, unless it were a specific category such as Category:English-language media about Russia (which probably doesn't exist.) — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:12, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
@Arthur Rubin: also, it's not a problem to have small small categories as a part of a larger scheme. I reject the idea about "English-language X" being a problem--there's no reason to assume that things we discuss here were composed in English. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:13, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Red Vines (song)

The article Red Vines (song) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No references, no claim of notability, fails WP:GNG and WP:NSONGS.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Wikispecies stuff

Hi Justin, I'm Marius, an admin from Wikispecies. You participated recently in a WS discussion concerning a user named Stho002, who happens to also be an admin there. His harassment continued since than and he practically forced me to abandon editing there altogether. The problem is that all the admins at WS are scientifically-inclined persons, who don't care about policing and about enforcing the rules, so it's impossible to obtain support from them. See please the latest discussion [1] where everyone justifies my position, yet no action or measure to deter Stho002 is being taken.

Let me stress the point that Stho002 has a very negative history at enwiki, where he was blocked several times on similar offences. please see this. Also, Stho002 monopolizes WS, which is a low-volume wiki by editing 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, without interruption. By this he reached a position where he practically manages WS according to his whims.

Can you please advise me what to do next? Is there a possibility of applying to a higher authority to look into this and sort out this issue? Many thanks, Mariusm (talk) 08:28, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

@Mariusm: First off, I'm happy to help as long as you understand that I don't have any technical abilities from the community (such as admin or bureaucrat) that would let me do anything you can't do and that I'm not somehow associated with the Wikimedia Foundation, so I don't have any kind of authority or legal expertise or somesuch. Problems like this are more-or-less tailored for stewards. They have bureaucrat abilities across (almost?) all WMF wikis. There are very few of them and they generally only intervene in the case of small wikis which have no admins or few active editors and get overrun by bullish users, hoaxes, spam, etc. This is probably your best bet if you feel like all options have been exhausted on species. That project has several bureaucrats who can block someone and furthermore change his user rights (so that if the community is in agreement that species:User:Stho002 is a problem user, he can be effectively stopped on that wiki). Have you spoken with any of them? Do you think they are receptive? I don't want to come across as someone with a horse in this race as I don't really know Stho002 nor do I do a lot on Wikispecies but it's clear that there are several users who are at the end of their rope interacting with him. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:36, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Koavf, I'm Allen that I'm looking at your user page. Wolverine

I tried to bring up the severe shortening of the lead section of Wolverine and several other articles at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Comics#Minimalistic lead sections on character articles, but... I feel like I just kind of got yelled at for complaining too much. 68.57.233.34 (talk) 12:13, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

@68.57.233.34: Every article needs to have an adequate lead section and that includes some discussion of every further section in the body of the text. I've noticed that a number of comics and film articles are extremely brief. —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:04, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
I agree with you, and that was the point I was trying to make in that discussion, but I got shouted down by one adamant user and gave up. For what it's worth, Wolverine's lead used to be more than twice as long. 68.57.233.34 (talk) 02:28, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

@Fimatic: I've never applied nor had anyone else apply me until a few months ago when a new user out of nowhere nominated me. It didn't go well but I think that's mostly due to the nominator and nomination rather than the nominatee. I'd be happy to do it and I've used the tools on other Wikimedia projects and unrelated MediaWiki sites as well. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:40, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
I just read through those - I'm actually surprised you didn't get more supports.
-Fimatic (talk) 03:43, 23 October 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fimatic (talkcontribs)
@Fimatic: So am I! I really don't understand why it was so harsh--honestly, what is the big fear of letting me block users or delete pages? I got several messages on my talk and e-mail expressing support and saying something like, "Had I noticed this earlier, I would have said something" or "If you get nominated again, I'll support you" which was actually very nice. I have lots of user rights here and I don't think there's anyone who sees that as a problem. Oh well. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:46, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I completely agree. Wouldn't you be a better candidate than some others because of your existing user rights and how you haven't messed up with them?

Edward Mordrake

Can you explain to me why since this edit Edward Mordrake has been a redirect with a hatnote. I have never heard of such a thing.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:21, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

@TonyTheTiger: I preemptively put in the hatnote, since the article for this episode will be made sooner or later. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:58, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
Do you realize how silly it is to have both a hatnote and a redirect going to different places. Imagine someone pointing to the right with their left index finger and to the left with their right index finger.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 06:14, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
@TonyTheTiger: Sure. But once the episode airs, the redirect will be removed and replaced with content and the hatnote will remain as useful. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:42, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
Why do you believe that the redirect will be replaced by anything but a redirect?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 12:15, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

I too am confident that an article will be created for the episode. However, I do not believe that the page should both point to the person and the episode. Why doesn't it just redirect to the alternate spelling of the person? That article should mention the episode.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:09, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Jonathanas Hillas (aka Jonathan Hill alias Lord Hill, newly-appointed EU Commissioner)

Hello Justin

Dunno whether you might be able to help? My friend Lithuanian friend Tina and I have been having probs with Lithuanian Wiki insofar as they keep deleting the appended article about Jonathan Hill, one of the new European Commissioners taking office on 1 November. Lithuania's new EuroCommissioner is Vytenis Andriukaitis and since Wikipedia no doubt would prefer to be represented well in all languages, including Lithuanian (www.elections2014.eu includes info about all the new EU Commissioners in case of interest), why has Lithuanian Wiki so far rejected this article?

Moved to lt.

Much obliged if you could advise what could be done for an article about Jonathan Hill to be uploaded on lt.wikipedia.org. Looking forward to hearing - many thanks. M Mabelina (talk) 11:59, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Latin music albums category

Hello Koavf! Thanks for creating the category for Latin music albums by artist nationality. Just one major thing that bothers me about the category is how it's not clear on what it means by "Latin music". See, Latin music just redirects to Latin American music, but Billboard and the Latin Recording Academy's definition of a Latin music album is any album that contains at least 50% recorded in Spanish or Portuguese (for Brazilian music) so that includes albums by artists from Spain. So if it's alright with you, I'm linking the "more information" to Latin music (genre). Cheers! Erick (talk) 23:55, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

@Magiciandude: If it's any consolation, I did not like the idea of this category scheme at all but I decided to fill it in since someone else started it. Thanks a lot. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:57, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Stoya

Regarding your edits to Stoya ([2] [3]): the Guardian page does not include her actual name, and Sunday World doesn't look like a reliable source for BLP information. Trivialist (talk) 11:50, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

@Trivialist: I've also included a third source now and I don't know why you're saying that Sunday World is unreliable. Is it more or less reliable than "Rog's Reviews" from two words later in the sentence? This is well-sourced information. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:45, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
For something like birthplace, I don't have a problem with something like Rog's Reviews, but I think a more reliable source is necessary before including the real name of someone who hasn't actively publicized her real name. In any event, the Guardian page doesn't actually contain her full name, and technically, the Awl article just uses the name as a tag, but doesn't say that it's her real name. Sunday World still seems a bit tabloidy to use, but I'm not familiar with the publication, so I concede that I could be wrong about it. Trivialist (talk) 23:00, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
@Trivialist: She can't be too picky about hiding her name if she freely uses her personal name in publications like The Guardian and a contraction of her surname as her stage name. Several sources reproduced this for several years. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:02, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
But, unless my browser is truncating words, the name listed on the Guardian page is not the same as the name listed in the Wikipedia article, so it doesn't seem like a valid source. Trivialist (talk) 23:06, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
@Trivialist: What is not valid? The Guardian? One of the most prestigious newspapers in the world? I don't understand what your endgame is here. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:08, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
My point was, according to the Guardian page you referenced, her name was "Jessica Stoya," which is not what you were claiming. (Sorry for the delay; missed your ping.) Trivialist (talk) 22:35, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

@Trivialist: But there's clearly sufficient justification for her proper personal name being "Jessica". —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:39, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

There's another reason why she's not hiding that name. It's because it's not her actual name. Stoyanodivich is her maternal grandmother's maiden name. Her last name through her father is a bit more mundane. You can figure out what it is if you look up the US trademark database. Remember WP:BLPPRIMARY though. Just Your Average Second On This Planet 1997-1998

This may be something for your 1337 albuming skillz. I have removed the apparent misnomer of this albums artwork, on the basis that the artwork on Progressive History XXX and Progressive History X seems to have the better claim to the name. I'm wondering whether there's more to the Fear of Pop: Volume 1#Cover artwork that we should have noted, or indeed whether we should have an article on Just Your Average Second On This Planet 1997-1998.

See also Talk:Fear of Pop: Volume 1#Cover Art.

Its sorted now. Basically two albums said the cover art was "Just Your Average Second On This Planet" 1997-1998 but plainly didn't use the same picture. Turns out the artwork is comprised of several pictures, each of which has its own name, for example "Just Your Average Second On This Planet" 1997-1998 (Discotheque). Wrong tags

Be careful, it seems you are adding several wrong orphan tags to articles which are actually not orphan: eg Biotrog, Bizarro League, Bilbolbul. My best, Cavarrone 09:08, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

@Cavarrone: I remember that WP:AWB's settings add the {{orphan}} tag to articles with less than four incoming links in the main namespace per a recommendation at WP:ORPHAN. If you don't want me to tag it, I don't mind. Alternately, if you think it's a bug in AWB, I'd recommend registering it as a bug. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:11, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
Per WP:ORPHAN, orphan tag should be added "if it satisfies the orphan criteria", ie "It is recommended to only place the Orphan tag if the article has zero incoming links from other articles." (stress not mine). I don't know nor I don't care about AWB, adding improper tags is disruptive. Cavarrone 09:19, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
@Cavarrone: I'm not suggesting that you do or must care about AWB as such but I am suggesting that if you care about articles being improperly tagged with {{Orphan}}, then a fix to that program will cut who knows how many off at the pass. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:22, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
@Cavarrone: Per checking {{Orphan}}, one can (and evidently should) apply the few parameter and AWB has an option under Preferences to only add {{orphan}} to linkless pages. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:28, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
Uh ok, I was just starting a discussion on Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Bugs but if there is an AWB preference to correctly set the orphan parameter the problem looks easily fixable (please fix it). My best and good editing, Cavarrone 09:41, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

But why do so

Maybe so, but why do so? If a template exists called "character" and the first parameter of the template is called "character's name", that is clearly an important parameter. I am not saying it is critical to the point that omitting it would break the template, I am saying it is important, as in "self-documenting". What on earth are you accomplishing by your mass edit? Prhartcom (talk) 18:48, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

@Prhartcom: character_name can be useful in the case of disambiguation but it's not needed otherwise and just adds it to a tracking category needlessly. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:51, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, but what are tracking categories? Prhartcom (talk) 19:01, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
@Prhartcom: See Category:Tracking categories. They are often used for problems with templates (e.g. Category:All_articles_lacking_reliable_references or Category:Album articles with non-standard infoboxes). Sometimes, they are used for information which will need to be monitored (say, a statement which will necessarily be dated and have to be changed in the future across multiple articles). —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:08, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
I found out on my own, you are talking about Category:Redundant infobox title param. Why not provide a more helpful edit summary including this link next time. Prhartcom (talk) 19:07, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
I'll bet there is an easier and better way to do this. What is really causing this "redundant" category? Probably not the quite reasonable inclusion of the important "name" parameter in templates used by a thousand articles, but probably a single line of code dealing with "name" in Template:Infobox comics character, Template:Infobox comics creator, and probably others. Can we change the code of the templates to prevent them from causing the article to be added to that category? For example, perhaps the code should be checking for the presence of parenthesis in the name, i.e. "Tintin (character)"? Prhartcom (talk) 19:50, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
@Prhartcom: I'm still not sure why name is especially important... The template generates a name at the top of the infobox anyway. I agree that if the name of the thing being discussed wasn't mentioned that would be odd to say the least but it is mentioned. I don't see why we would want to add extra code for something that can be generated on the fly. In the case of things like "Tintin (character)" then name is quite useful for making it clear that his proper name is simply "Tintin". In the case of "Batman" why do we need to say, "name=Batman"? I just don't see what I'm missing here. For what it's worth, I'm also taking out some junk styling parameters as well. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:54, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
Here is all that I am asking: What is really causing the redundancy, which causes the articles to be added to the redundancy category? We know that the template is designed to take the "name" parameter and place it at the top of the Infobox. We know that the template is also designed to take the article name and place it at the top of the Infobox. Perhaps the template is doing both unnecessarily, causing a redundancy, and may only need an "if" statement so that it will do one or the other? I don't know. I should read the code. I'm just saying that, if something like that is happening, it would be better to fix the template rather than fix all the articles, which are including a very reasonable parameter that you are busy deleting ("name" is a reasonable parameter in a template called "character" or "creator", don't you agree, therefore shouldn't we try to keep it?) If I am missing something please let me know. Prhartcom (talk) 20:09, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

@Prhartcom: We could also have fields for infobox=yes and lang=English and format=HTML all of which could be very important for many purposes but which aren't necessary in the infobox itself. There are times when name can be useful (the only one that comes to mind is disambiguation) but there's no reason to include more code than is necessary. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:55, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

I'm getting no indication from you that you are following what I am saying. Likewise, I don't really understand you. I wish we could communicate. Please refrain from your mass edit until I can find someone that can analyze and understand the templates (I tried; I cannot). Prhartcom (talk) 21:12, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Elections categories

Hi there, these tags on redirects seem kind of strange to me. I see some of the "see also" links in the election articles are circular redirs to the same article. Is this part of a greater work in progress? Generally WP:ORE tags redirects very sparingly, for the most part keeping them only on redirs that have a chance to become standalone articles. I see the need for a full set of Oregon election articles in time, but I suspect no one in our project will get around to that for a while. In any case, would you be so kind as to class these as redirs? I'm also going to mention this on the project page in case anyone is interested in taking this on. Cheers, Valfontis (talk) 02:42, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

@Valfontis: No problem. I didn't make any of that tree but I did notice that at least a few redirected to general United States elections. I did not see anything about the "See also" sections looping back to themselves... I'm working on a little task but I can get to those in a day or two. I have no particular objection to your putting a WP:AFRICA template on the redirect at Talk:Battle of Río de Oro if that's what you feel is right, but please do not use the roll back feature for reverting good faith edits. Per WP:ROLLBACK this feature should not be used where an edit summaryh is expected, and given that I had already stated my reasons for restoring the redirect, and my edit was not vandalism, you should not have rolled it back, and should have given some reason whyu you disagreed with what I did.

Salvador Diaz Ordonez

Hi Koavf, Why did you add all the Central America-related task force notices to the talk page for this article. The individual had nothing to do with Central America? The nearest he got was serving in Cuba as an artillery officer during the Cuban uprising against the Spanish. Acad Ronin (talk) 22:12, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote

Hi. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian, and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vode. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). PS. If you chose to reply here (on your userpage), please WP:ECHO me. Thank you! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:32, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

@Piotrus: This is a good question and an excellent topic but I think I have a crappy answer: my recollection is that by the time I saw the vote, I thought that there was a foregone conclusion. That's just what I can recall off-hand and if you want, I can dig more into my memory and search through some pages. Let me know. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:49, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Justin, that's totally fine of an answer, and I appreciate you thinking about this. I have added a relevant answer to the survey to better reflect your view (that might well be shared by others - which is, after all, what I am trying to understand here). Let me know if you'd suggest any wording changes, or if you think I am missing a question that should have been asked. Also, would you have any thoughts on Q4/Q5? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:02, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
@Piotrus: If you're asking for my answers to questions for and five: 4.) Yes, I think they did a fine job of soliciting feedback. I'm sure that there are some editors who were caught off-guard, as not everyone edits ever day but time was of the essence and that is actually consistent with the shock value of the SOPA/PIPA protest in the first place. 5.) As best as I can tell. I don't usually get involved but I think they do as good a job as they can. It's difficult to balance the drive to make awareness with being obtrusive. I've never had any problem with the Wikimedia Foundation and I don't really understand most complaints levied against them. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:34, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Do you know how to create articles (not on wikipedia), such as on "theguardian" or "daily mail", or if you know any other website in which is easier to create good articles.

I have another question which regard you. Do you work or study? How can you use wikipedia for almost 24 hours? Is this account used by more that one user? Thank you! 217.42.220.72 (talk) 18:25, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

@217.42.220.72: The Daily Mail and The Guardian are British newspapers which have their own staff. I do work and go to school intermittently. Sometimes, when I have a day off, I just edit Wikipedia all day around my other activities as a way to unwind. This account has never been used by anyone other than me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:27, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

@217.42.220.72: If you're looking to create content on the Web there are lots of sites that can pay you but I don't know if I can recommend any of them. In large part, it depends on what you want to write (comedy, criticism, journalism...?) If you self-publish, you cannot cite the source here but if it's published by a credible third-party, you can. (cf. WP:COI, WP:V, WP:OR, and WP:SOURCE). I don't earn money from editing Wikipedia. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:34, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Belgium vs. Belarus

Hi Koavf,

Please check what wikiproject you're tagging categories with. You've dropped at least 5 Belgian articles (on my watchlist alone) into WP:Belarus. Better no wp at all than the wrong one, surely! —Brigade Piron (talk) 19:25, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

FYI Newly Created Talk Pages

Just a quick note to let you know that a massive number of date/events/in country x articles were deleted earlier today as basically empty shells (no content). I see you just recreated the talk pages for the ones related to Jordan. I have put CSD tags on them (G-8). It's strictly a housekeeping thing. But yeah, just check to make sure the article is actually still there when you are (re)creating a talk page. No point in creating needless work for yourself. Project banners in portal subpages?

Hello Koavf, first of all thanks for helping to tag project pages via AWB. Recently I have tried to polish and clean up some minor issues with assessment for WP Germany and realized, that you are tagging subpages of portals as well (including logs, navboxes, statistics, ...). Please don't change anything for now, but I was wondering, if including such internal maintenance pages is really meaningful? See Category:Portal-Class Germany articles, ca. 200 of those pages are not "of interest", as nobody will ever look at them again :). Perhaps it would be better to tag only the main portal page for each portal - of course any subpage of a portal is automatically part of the portal itself, but doesn't need special tagging (imo). What do you think would be better? GermanJoe (talk) 14:18, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

@GermanJoe: Whether or not anyone refers to these categories or uses them for some purpose, I couldn't really say but it's better to have them listed somewhere and not need it than need them listed somewhere and not have it. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:10, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the clarification. I could probably just separate main pages with an appropriate importance if that would ever become necessary, but it's not vital for now. GermanJoe (talk) 17:41, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Lord Laitinen Requires Your Assistance

Hello, Koavf. I would like your assistance with something image-related. I have created a series of files by merging Wikipedia's permission logos with File:Folder-open Gion.svg, which could be used by users to show that they have applied/requested for user permissions unsuccessfully in the past. I believe that these files would be of great use to Wikipedia, but I would like to know if you think so, as well. Also, since I am utilizing Wikimedia Foundation logo files and a file made by another user, which license, if any, would allow this series of files to be uploaded? Before asking you, I also consulted Sfan00 IMG for assistance yesterday. Since he did not reply yet, I figured I would ask another user with lots of file experience. Please leave your reply on my talk page or here. Thanks! Lord Laitinen (talk) 07:59, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

@Lord Laitinen: The Wikimedia Foundation logos were recently relicensed to be free, so any derivative works would have free licenses as well. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:01, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Thank you very much for replying so quickly. In the next few minutes, I will be uploading the files, and I hope they will be of great use to Wikipedia. Lord Laitinen (talk) 08:03, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Presentation proposal for Wikimania 2015

How to pick up more women...
Hi Koavf! Victuallers and I have developed a proposal for a talk to be presented at Wikimania 2015. It's titled, How to pick up more women... -- as in more women editors and more women's biographies. Examples include the Edit-a-thon blitz during WikiWomen's History Month and the "new articles" work underway by WikiProject Women Writers. The Wikimania talk proposal review process has begun and there's no guarantee that our proposal will be accepted. That's where you come in. Please review it and, if you wish, give us feedback on the submission's talkpage or my talkpage (vs. your talkpage). Ultimately, we hope you add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal which signifies you'd be interested in the talk if you were attending it (it does not commit you to attending Wikimania). Thank you! Rosiestep (talk) 03:58, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

I Really Like You

At I Really Like You, I reverted your edits as redirects should remain uncategorised until the song comes out. Thank you, Nahnah4 (talk | contribs | guestbook) 08:54, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

@Nahnah4: The song is out and you are mistaken about categorizing redirects. Why do you think this? —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:11, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
I know the song is out, that was a mistake. I meant that it should remain uncategorised until the article is made. And, categorising redirects just look weird and even at redirect pages like Bad Blood (Taylor Swift song), Mirror Man (Ella Henderson song) and as well as Sparks (Neon Hitch song) does not have categories. Isn't it like common sense that putting categories on redirects are weird? Nahnah4 (talk | contribs | guestbook) 05:43, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
@Nahnah4: There may be many redirects which aren't categorized but they should be. There is a guide to this here: WP:CATREDIRECT. This is a perfect example of WP:INCOMPATIBLE (Redirects whose target title is incompatible with the category): Carly Rae Jepsen does not belong in Category:Carly Rae Jepsen songs but I Really Like You does. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:06, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
No, you see, at WP:CATREDIRECT, they clearly say that "redirects aren't articles, and most of the time they should not be categorised". They also stated redirect categories are only used for specially-designed redirect categories. And, duh, I know Carly Rae Jepsen isn't under Category:Carly Rae Jepsen songs. I'm not that stupid. Nahnah4 (talk | contribs | guestbook) 06:41, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
@Nahnah4: I didn't call you stupid: this is a straightforward applicatino of WP:INCOMPATIBLE. It is still true that most redirects shouldn't be categorized with articles. For instance, Joseph Stalin is in Category:1953 deaths but Jose Stalin isn't. Nor is Jossif Vissarionovich Dhzugazvili, etc. This redirect should be categorized per WP:CATREDIRECT. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:47, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
Oh my god. I am trying to say that redirects should not be categorised, not what articles has what categories. Nahnah4 (talk | contribs | guestbook) 06:55, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

@Nahnah4: And I'm saying that you're mistaken. I understand your original point. Redirects are frequently categorized. One example of a time when they should be is if the categories that apply to the redirect do not apply to the article which is pointed to by the redirect. This is relevant in the case of I Really Like You. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:57, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Redirects are not frequently categorised. How they categorise it is by using the {{R from <whatever>}} template. That is called "categorising redirects". If you won't believe me, I am not the only users who remove categories from redirects. It is you troublemakers who wants to make it difficult. And wow, I edited Wikipedia for more than a year, I don't know that categories apply when relevant to the article. And I'm 12 years old. Even a 5-year-old non-editor on Wikipedia would have known this. Nahnah4 (talk | contribs | guestbook) 07:04, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
@Nahnah4: I honestly have no clue what you're trying to say. How do you understand WP:INCOMPATIBLE to not apply in this case? It seems very obvious to me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:30, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
Whatever, I made it into an article now, not a redirect anymore, so let's shut up together. I'll work on this article. Nahnah4 (talk | contribs | guestbook) 07:32, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes they are verifiable and credible. 36kr is one of the largest Chinese startup-focused news website, similar to TechCrunch. @Miaosi51: Definitely. What I'd recommend is that you go to Draft:ChineseSkill and start to write up something there. Take a look at Wikipedia:Drafts. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:47, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

George Orwell bibliography

Hi Koavf. I recently bought volume 11 and 18 of Davison's The Complete Works of George Orwell and have been doing some work on the George Orwell bibliography using them. I discovered that many of the book reviews are listed twice in the article in the full list of publications. Both under the title of the review and the title of the reviewed book:

Title Date Collected Notes
"A Catholic Confronts Communism" 27 January 1939 CEJL I, CW XI, EL, OP Published in Peace News
Communism and Man by F. J. Sheed 27 January 1939 CEJL I, CW XI, EL, OP Book review published in Peace News

I am trying to combine the entries, but are not sure what to do with the titles of the reviews, as all reviews do not have titles. Do you have any suggestions on what to do? I all reviews had titles, then perhaps this would be a god solution:

Title Date Collected Notes
"A Catholic Confronts Communism" 27 January 1939 CEJL I, CW XI, EL, OP Review of Communism and Man by F. J. Sheed published in Peace News

All the best. –P. S. Burton (talk) 23:51, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

@P. S. Burton: I have seen what you did (I also edited the article today in the middle of you editing) and I think that your example above is exactly right. I have done a similar thing with some of the book reviews that I have listed on the article as well. If it has a title, then use the title and then explain it in the notes section. Do you need any help from me? —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:53, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Great! Thanks for your input. I will try fixing all the entries for volume eleven. After that it would be perfect if you could take a second look.P. S. Burton (talk) 00:08, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

@P. S. Burton: Maybe we can all help each other out. I also have the Davison compendia and have actually been compiling a master list of Orwell works for a while (I'm up to ~500 from Orwell's childhood to around 1937) in anticipation of making all my changes at once. If you could tell me the dates of the volumes you have, I can skip those and continue where you can't. Please let me know here. -- Veggies (talk) 19:35, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
@Veggies: That's great! I appreciate any help on this list. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:56, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi @Veggies:. That sounds very good. Please go ahead and add whatever you have. I will mainly be focusing on volume eleven of the complete works, which covers 1937 to 1939. I actually just came home from the library where I borrowed George Orwell, A Bibliography, a real treasure trove of information. –P. S. Burton (talk) 17:17, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Bot?

Hey, have you considered requesting a bot account for these AWB edits? It's kinda been flooding the RC feed. Thanks, Nakon 06:56, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

@Nakon: I've discussed a flood flag but nothing came of it. For what it's worth, I'm about to pass out for the night, so you can patrol RecentChanges undisturbed. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:02, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
It's not really about me reviewing RC, if you're making a ton of changes, you should probably at least run it by the BAG. Nakon 07:20, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Agree, using AWB for very large amounts of edits (especially page creations) should be done with a bot flag; these tasks are fairly straight forward and should be easy enough to get approved. There are two main benefits: (for YOU) AWB can legit be used in "automated" mode - not requiring pressing 'save'; (for everyone else) RCP/NPP/etc won't be flooded. We don't flag users as 'bot', please create a second account (e.g. User:Koavf bot) and post a bot task request at WP:RFBOT. This will get it a flag, and enable bot mode for AWB. Thank you for your attention to this. — xaosflux Talk 18:44, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Per the discussion from here [4] (which was the result of the South Park ones) and that given these are basically single images with single uses, you should list these at FFD in small batches (I haven't checked, but by season would make sense); NFCR is not the proper place for those since the target action is deletion. If you get slack like you did from SP, point them to the above discussion, because as noted, you were in the right place and were told wrong info before. --MASEM (t) 15:58, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

@Snowager: I also think that giving me the tools would enhance the project and not detract from it but my last RFA was a disaster. Feel free to nominate if you'd like and I'd be happy to do it. I just don't want you to waste your time. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:45, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

RFA

Your RfA

Hey Koavf, I wanted to let you know that I moved your RfA as there was not a space between your name and the numeral. Have a good night (or day)! MJ94 (talk) 06:19, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

FYI, and for purely pedantic reasons :), wikitravel is not a mediawiki site. It is owned by Internet Brands, a for profit organization. --regentspark (comment) 01:39, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
@RegentsPark: MediaWiki is software made by volunteers who work on projects curated by the the Wikimedia Foundation. Most MediaWiki sites are not Wikimedia Foundation sites. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:05, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Ah. Right. I guess I was the confused one. --regentspark (comment) 02:19, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
@RegentsPark: No problem. It's nice of you to write me in the first place. Have a good day. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:21, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Dear Koavf, I am writing to inform you that I have closed your most recent RFA as "withdrawn" following your statement here. I wasn't able to participate but I want to reaffirm something you mentioned in your withdrawal statement. As a sysop, I rarely interact with experienced editors when I use the administrative tools. The need to clearly explain my actions to new users is an absolute essential skill. As you have found out, answers that are short and glaze over key aspects of policies are generally not received well. While in some cases, doing so may be an assumption by the candidate that everyone knows the rules, it often is a method used by editors who don't have a clear understand of their nuance. It's equally as important to note that RFA is a real test of your knowledge not only on the wording of the policies, but to give the community an insight in how you apply them. It's like my math teacher always said, show your work that got you to your answer. Look forward to seeing your next RFA. Mkdwtalk 03:56, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Koavf, I just noticed your RfA withdrawal and wanted to comment on your very level-headed withdrawal statement (of course I would say that, wouldn't I! :) With a little time to get familiar with the process and the policies specific to admin actions, I'm sure you'll be a very good candidate. Opabinia regalis (talk) 07:08, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi. For what it's worth, I was neutral leaning towards tentative support in your RfA and I think it could have stayed open a bit longer. The block log is totally irrelevant in my view - we have a related essay, Don't remind others of past misdeeds. As Mkdw has hinted at, I asked the questions because I wanted to find out how you answered specific points - there's no particular "right" or "wrong" answer to any of them. I was hoping the answers would have not only swayed me one way or the other, but convinced others too. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:01, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Jor.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Justin, you reverted my edit so I thought of writing you here that the provided citations are not independent except two which backup the line "Using a wiki model, Wikitravel is built through collaboration of Wikitravellers from around the globe". While on the other hand, I don't see the rest of the content hold any encyclopaedic value. The style of writing is clearly advertisement. --Saqib (talk) 10:27, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Your edit to Justin Knapp

Hi Justin, I noticed you undid my edit to your own article in which I changed your birth place to Speedway, Indiana rather than Indianapolis. Does this mean that this story about you, which describes you as a "Speedway native", is wrong? Everymorning talk 21:50, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

@Everymorning: That's correct. I grew up in Eagledale (a neighborhood of Indianapolis proper), a few blocks from the Speedway border and have never lived in Speedway. I was born at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:45, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Be careful with the dashes script

The script that edits dashes can break DOI values. Please be careful with it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:10, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: Wow, that's crazy. It's good about not breaking ISBN/ISSNs, URIs, and hyphens in templates so that's actually very surprising. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:51, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
@Jonesey95:: Why did you readd the unsourced statement at the beginning which contradicts the sources and spurious references at the end? —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:53, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
That's strange. I did not do that intentionally, nor did I add the extra Reflist at the bottom. I don't know how that could have happened. I'm going to blame gremlins in the software. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:12, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: Look at the edit history: my other edits were to remove those things prior to using the dash script. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:14, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

Catching up

Hi bro! As you know, I was in the ICU unit in a coma for 3 months from September 2, 2013 through to January, 2014!! Then, I was moved to a nursing home from February in the 1st week of February to learn to learn to move my head, hands, sit up, stand, walk, etc., from all of my muscle atrophy and one lung had collapsed and a tracheotomy -- it's been a wild, unforeseen and painful lasting thus far, still at least the last 1 1/2 years to date-thus I have been doing just a little in the Wikipedia for now, but will return to more activity soon. Thanks for your consideration! Leahtwosaints (talk) 13:08, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

@Leahtwosaints: I did not know that you were in a coma! I feel awful. Where are you staying now? If you want to communicate off-wiki, please do. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:16, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Explanation

This is why I got in trouble initially. And here is a discussion where user Kingofaces43 accuses me of vandalism: Keep in mind you can be blocked for vandalism and violating WP:CONSENSUS by continuing to make edits like this while the talk page conversation is still ongoing. How will I know when will it be closed, and why my edits out of a sudden are vandalistic?--Mishae (talk) 02:16, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Well, I guess everything is now a lot worse take a look at the bottom above your comment. I'm really out of thoughts of what to say to all of this.--Mishae (talk) 15:27, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Sing into Your Mouth, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://newleakedmp3.com/iron-wine-band-of-horses-sing-into-your-mouth-leaked-album/.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

Band of Horses / Iron and Wine

Can't understand where you get the idea that the new covers album is ANYTHING to do with Band of Horses??? It's a collaboration between Sam Beam and Ben Bridwell. Yes Beam IS Iron and Wine, but Bridwell is NOT Band of Horses! It's great that you're starting this page and I can't wait for this album, but you need to correct the page.... this is NOT a Band of Horses album in any shape or form.Thegraciousfew (talk) 06:46, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Ok, I can see that Paste Magazine is where you got the idea that this is a BOH album!... all I can say is that they got it wrong. Band of Horses own site confirms that its just IAW and Ben, and so do lots of other web articles.Thegraciousfew (talk) 17:02, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sing into Your Mouth, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sade. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 11:28, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Barnastars

Just couple of weeks before my block I realized that my barnstars don't show in full line (identical to your page). Can you see why is that? Thanks.--Mishae (talk) 16:59, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

@Mishae: Can you provide an old version? This (e.g.) looks about the same. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:32, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
That's the problem. I can't provide an old version because they all look the same. Yet, I used to have 2 yellow barnstars, 2 rainbow colored ones, and 3 Original Barnstar Hires. They are all lined up on the bottom of my userpage, but only one of each is visible. Getting the point?--Mishae (talk) 03:40, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
@Mishae: Best guess is that since icon_nr is now obsolete for {{top icon}}, it's not displaying properly. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:53, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
So is there is a way to correct it?--Mishae (talk) 05:23, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
@Mishae: You might want to just copy and paste what I have on my userpage. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:28, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
Well I did that. Didn't yield a difference, infact after this every barnstar disappeared but one.--Mishae (talk) 06:18, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Edit warring

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Major professional sports teams of the United States and Canada. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and breaking the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a block. If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. Resolute 13:32, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
