• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 July. It will be on all wikis from 9 July (calendar).

Future changes

• Abstract Wikipedia is a new Wikimedia project. It will collect language-independent information that can be easily read in different languages. It builds on Wikidata. The name is preliminary. You can read more. [2]
• The iOS Wikipedia app developers are thinking about new experimental tools. If you use an iPhone you can help them by answering the survey.
• Some rules for user signatures will soon be enforced. Lint errors and invalid HTML will no longer be allowed in user signatures. Nested substitution will not be allowed. A link to your user page, user talk page or user contributions will be required. You can check if your signature works with the new rules. This is because the signatures can cause problems for tools or other text on the page.

• Users can thank others for their edits. Checkusers can now see user data related to that action. This can help identify sock puppets who harass others using thanks. [3]

Problems

• Everyone was logged out a couple of weeks ago to fix a security problem. The problem was not entirely fixed. Because of this everyone was logged out once again last week. [4][5]

Changes later this week

• Wikis that are not for one specific language can translate pages. Sometimes parts of translations are outdated or missing. Outdated translations are marked with a pink background. Missing translations will also be marked in the future. This markup can sometimes break things. It can soon be disabled by using <translate nowrap></translate> on the source page. [6]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 July. It will be on all wikis from 16 July (calendar).

Future changes

• Wikimedia code review plans to use GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. [7][8][9][10]

Not sure on the detail of the subject but you need to address the comment of copyvio, if this has not been done, as this will cause the article to be rejected when it is reviewed. For example you indicate that "Have been exported to this article, with permission" but there is no evidence that you have this permission. You need to write the article in your own words and not copy information directly from the sources. The references need completing with details of author, publisher, date of publication, etc. Keith D (talk) 17:08, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

About seoul and tehran relationship

Hello, Please Add "Tehran"(capital of Iran) in 'international relations' part of seoul English page.

They signed the contract in 1963 during the mayor of Tehran visit to Seoul and Tehran's streets were found in Seoul, and then Seoul Street. Documents are the ones available on the Internet. In the meantime, the Samsung and LG office is also on the street .

Recent changes

• A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. The mobile main page special casing stopped working 14 July. 60 wikis now have main pages that don't work well on mobile. You can see which ones, how to fix it and how to get help in Phabricator. This is the same problem that was reported in Tech News 2020/24 and 2020/26.

Problems

• There is a problem with the interlanguage links. The interlanguage links are the links that help you find a specific page in a different language. The sorting is broken. The developers are working on a solution. [11]
• Some users keep getting the notifications for the same event. Some of these are old events. [12]
• Some users have trouble logging in. This is probably a browser cookie problem. The developers are working on understanding the problem. If you have trouble logging in you can see the details on Phabricator. [13]

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 July. It will be on all wikis from 23 July (calendar).

• There is a Printable version link. This will disappear. That is because web browsers today can create a printable version or show how it will look in print anyway. [14]

Recent changes

• The Starter kit is now available for wiki communities. This page lists technical resources, tools, and recommendations. These are essential to operate a wiki project. This is mostly useful for smaller wikis where the community has limited experience with this. [15]
• The first features of the Desktop Improvements project are available for logged-in users on all wikis. In order to use them, uncheck Use Legacy Vector in your local or global preferences in section Skin preferences. More improvements are planned. Feedback is welcome.
• On multiple wikis, a UTCLiveClock gadget is available. For wikis that import the gadget directly from mediawiki.org, end users can now choose a different timezone to show instead of UTC.

Problems

• The deployment train for MediaWiki has been blocked this week. [16][17]
• Translation Notification Bot was sending the same message multiple times to every translator. This has been fixed. [18]
• Some users were receiving the same notification multiple times. This has been fixed. [19]

Possible COI at Frithjof Schuon‎

Hi Keith, not sure if you can help out as an admin, as I'm not sure of the procedure for dealing with possible COIs. I see you made a minor edit in the middle of a lot of material added to Frithjof Schuon‎ (not a BLP) by Maude Murray (talk · contribs). In real life Maude Murray is the alleged third "wife" of the subject, and the text added is very controversial and centred around claims to be made in a forthcoming book. I'm not the alleged third wife actually. I mean that I am not alledging to be what Im not: Frithjof Schuon did that. I just added that word myself - meaning "neither legal nor spiritual." In the text, I mention that the only legal wife, has a letter in her handwriting online, saying that two totally illegitimate marriages were proven by "irrefutable signs from heaven" Frithjof Schuon was a highly intellectual fraud, who covered his properties for nudity, sexual adventures and lying, with sublime esoteric ideas. Is there no way to let anyone know that? You've got, in effect, an article on Wikipedia, endorsing a fraud. The article is what's biased, not me! He belittled the Quran, the Sunnah and the Shariah...and all revelations, claiming to be above them. For example, quotations contrary to his position are on a pave in my site. Instead of giving the address of the site, may I give the title? As I said in reply to you on my user talk page: Hi Maude, I'm really sorry that you are in this position, but it's not a matter of sending the materials to an individual editor: the materials need to be verifiable by anyone viewing the article, whether editors or readers. So you have to provide inline citations / references for all significant facts added to the article. The citations need to point to reliable, independent sources, which can be newspaper items (global, national, regional or even local papers), radio or television, web pages or online documents (eg PDFs), magazine articles, journals, or books. Note that self-published materials are not reliable secondary sources. Also, since you have a conflict of interest, you would need to suggest changes on the article's talk page, rather than making changes yourself. Again, I appreciate your situation, and I'm sorry that I can't be of more help.

Once your book is published, if it's reviewed in reliable, secondary sources (eg mainstream media), then you could probably use the content of those reviews to suggest additions to the Wikipedia article. Esowteric+Talk 16:03, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Sounds like you are trying to hide something if you are unwilling to give links. You should give sufficient to enable someone else to find the source, if it is an on-line source then it will need a web-address of the page in question and publisher details, for books and other published sources then the ISBN or other details, such as the publisher, date of publication, etc. They would also have to be reliable sources as shown in the link. Problems

• All queries to the Wikidata Query Service failed between 17:50 and 17:59 UTC on Thursday 23 July. Some queries failed during a longer period. [20]
• Interlanguage links were ordered incorrectly for the past few weeks. This problem was also mentioned in Tech News two weeks ago. The problem is now fixed. [21]
• There is a problem with the global preferences for the "Use Legacy Vector" option. Developers are working on fixing it. [22]
• A bug in the Wikibase extension had disabled the "move" and "create" types of protection in the main (Gallery) namespace on Wikimedia Commons. New protections could not be added, and existing protections were not enforced, allowing some page moves and page creations that should not have been possible. This has now been fixed. [23]

Changes later this week

• The video player will change to be simpler and more modern. This week, the current beta feature will become the video player for everyone on most non-Wikipedia wikis. The old player will be removed. [24]
• Users' global.js and global.css pages will now also be loaded on the mobile site. You can read documentation for how to avoid applying styles to the mobile skin. [25]
• In the MonoBook skin, the searchGoButton identifier is now searchButton. This may affect CSS and JS gadgets. Migration instructions can be found in T255953. This was previously mentioned in issue 27.
• Bot operators can use Pywikibot to regularly archive discussions. The behavior when the bot uses counter to prevent large archives was changed. [26]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 5. It will be on all wikis from August 6 (calendar).

• FileImporter and FileExporter became standard features on all Wikis during the first week of August. They help you transfer files from local wikis to Wikimedia Commons with the original file information and history intact. [27]

• The mobile skin displays a message at the bottom of the page about who edited last. This message showed raw wikitext. This has now been fixed. Some messages in Structured Discussions and content translation may still appear as raw wikitext. Developers are working on it. [28]

• If you revert an edit using the undo link your edit is marked with an undo tag. This will now only happen if you don't change anything in the edit window before publishing the undo. This is to keep users from marking edits as undos when they actually do something else. [31]
• The new OOUI version will not work with Internet Explorer 8. This means the wikis will look strange and not work well in Internet Explorer 8. This was reported in Tech/News/2020/17. This is because keeping the wikis working with very old browsers creates other problems. [32]

Changes later this week

• Normally pages can be moved to a title that has no existing page yet or to a page that has only one revision, which is a redirect to the page to be moved. A new user right allows editors to move pages over one-revision pages that redirect to anywhere. [37]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 September. It will be on all wikis from 10 September (calendar).
• All MediaWiki API modules will now use watchlist instead of watch. This was inconsistent before. [38]

Future changes

• The Wikipedia Android app team might work on patrolling tools in the future. You can let them know what tools would be useful for you or for less experienced patrollers. See the page on mediawiki.org.
• OTRS will be updated to a new version. This will probably take around two days. OTRS agents will not have access to the system during these days. Emails that come in during the update will be delivered when the update is done. The plan is to start around 08:00 UTC on 14 September. This could change. [39]
• The Wikipedia Android app will send push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will need Google Play Services to work. It will also be possible to get the app without Google Play Services but push notifications will not work. Google Play Services is also used to make the app work for Android 4.4 users. [40][41]
• Wikimedia code review could move to GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. You can take part in the consultation.
• Dropdown menus in the Vector skin use a .menu class. This will not work in the future. Scripts can use nav ul instead. .vectorTabs and .vectorMenu will also not work. Some scripts need to be updated. You can read more in Phabricator.

Hello I have had a quick look but I have no knowledge of the subject to evaluate if any of the sources are reliable or not. They appear to have some knowledge of the subject and have been editing it for a time. If you cannot get anywhere on the article talk page the you could try WP:ANI to see if any other admins have any background to make a judgement on this. Sorry if this is not very helpful. Thank you Keith. This guy RovingPersonalityConstruct keeps removing sourced materials including the source themselves. He tried to use his own sources to proving his claims only ended up conflicting himself and he removed his own source.

Today, I added more creditable information about the engine and provided source. He simply removed them all including the source. His behavior proved to be disruptive, could you please warn him.

Fixing PMC warnings

Recent changes

• Admins can now see links to diffs of deleted revisions on Special:AbuseLog. This uses the interface of Special:Undelete. [47]
• Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Wikis can now ask to change how long this period of time is for their wiki in Phabricator. It is currently five days. [48]

Problems

• Last year some abuse filters stopped working because of a new change. If they tried to use variables that were unavailable for that action they would fail. This has now been fixed. [49]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 September. It will be on all wikis from 1 October (calendar).

Future changes

• You can't see the language links to other language versions from the talk page or history page. They are also not shown when you edit an article. This could change. It is not decided if for example the history page should link to another history page or to the article. You can take part in the discussion in Phabricator.
• The link colours could change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. You can read more in Phabricator.
• In your preferences you can choose to get different notifications on the web or by email. You will see Apps as one of the alternatives later this week. This is because the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps will use push notifications for those who want them. You can see the preferences on the test wiki. The goal is to have push notifications on Android in October and on iOS in early 2021. [50]
• You can soon put pages on your watchlist for a limited time. This could be useful if you want to watch something for a shorter time but don't want it on your watchlist forever. It now works on mediawiki.org and will come to more wikis later. You can read more and see when it will come to other wikis.
• You can see what Wikimedians think are the best new technical tools this year. You can also nominate them.

Hello, I have had a quick look and looks OK on the face of it. On the style issues a couple of points. Headings should only have the first word capitalised unless it is a name, also refer to the subject of the article by their surname rather than their Christian name after the first usage. • There is a new tool where you can see which home wiki users have in discussions on Meta. This can help show which communities are not part of the discussion on wikis where we make decisions that affect many other wikis.
• You can now thank users for file uploads or for changing the language of a page. [51]

Problems

• There were many errors with the new MediaWiki version last week. The new version was rolled back. Updates that should have happened last week are late. [52]
• Everyone was logged out. This was because a user reported being logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [53]
• Many pages have JavaScript errors. You can read more and now see a list of user scripts with errors.

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 October. It will be on all wikis from 8 October (calendar).
• Letters immediately after a link are shown as part of the link. For example the entire word in [[Child]]ren is linked. On Arabic wikis this works at both the start and end of a word. Previously on Arabic wikis numbers and other non-letter Unicode characters were shown as part of the link at the start of a word but not at the end. Now only Latin and Arabic letters will extend links on Arabic wikis. [54]

Moved to draft

Your name appears in a box at the top of an article I created. The article has been moved to the Draft space; something that I have never heard of before, even though I have created 237 pages in Wikipedia. I did find a Wikipedia page that had this sentence "The Articles for Creation (AfC) process is intended to assist editors who cannot (e.g. non-registered or non-autoconfirmed users)... create new articles directly into mainspace." But I am far from "non-regitered" and far from "non-autoconfirmed". I made my first edit in 2006 and I have 9,165 live edits. I have had the same user-name the entire time, and I was logged-in when I created the moved article. I am, to say the least, deeply puzzled as to why it was moved to Drafts. Marton, Harrogate, Grafton, North Yorkshire and Marton cum Grafton

Hi Keith. I hope this finds you well? Sorry to rake this one up again (I heard about but did not read previous discussions) - I met one of Marton cum Grafton's local history society members in the area yesterday, and he was quite concerned that he still did not understand why all the above could not be combined into Marton cum Grafton and leave it at that. Apparently he had tried to move the pages a few times and he could not understand why it was reverted. He said he had been in contact with you a few times, but he still did not understand.

I've had a look at the above articles, and the present situation seems clear and correct within WP's guidelines, to me. The road signs differentiate between the two villages, and so did one set of (newly-moved-in) locals that I met earlier. The church's name board says Marton cum Grafton, but then that's the parish legal name, mentioned here. The OS map calls the whole place Marton cum Grafton, which to me is really confusing. So if it were a matter of taking sides, I'm on your side.

Now I would like to send him an explanation, but please could you clarify his misunderstanding at all? Is the OS map at fault? Suppose I were to recommend to him that he forget about the existing two pages about Marton Harrogate and Grafton WY, could he take part in creating the page for the parish? Is there a WP page-link to tell him what should or should or should not be in a parish article?

Hello, cannot find out where he tried to move the articles, the interaction in the past appears to be having problems over the editors not understanding WP rules and trying to make non-encyclopedic changes which I and other editors felt where not appropriate. You can see this on the talk page of Talk:Marton, Harrogate. I may have got the wrong editor but as you noted we tend to try and keep articles about separate places separate. Though we do usually have a short civil parish article covering the civil parish, for statistics and other things that relate to the parish rather than the constituent settlements. Cannot put finger on a specific page covering things at the moment. Would be good to get some people with local knowledge on board, if they are willing to work collaboratively and not try to do things their way and own the articles. I'm not interested in their own recent pictures; I can take my own pictures of the village, and I have never had any luck in getting people to upload their own pictures, I have no idea why. Maybe they think their pictures are worth money? But I am always interested in pre-1923 pictures (copyright-free), and they have a few of those. Thanks for the link to the Marton talkpage. Gosh, the person I met didn't seem as grumpy and argumentative as that. Let's hope that the villager I offered editorial assistance to was not the same person. The only clear detail that that person gave me was his conviction that the place was called Marton cum Grafton, and that calling bits of it by the above pagenames was all wrong. I would be interested to find out what the places were called in e.g. medieval times. Not Marton cum Grafton, I bet. Anyway, I'll see what I can do. Meanwhile I have taken one or two photos there, in connection with a Marton school which was demolished around 1830. I'll upload them to Commons soon, under the Marton category. Cheers. Hello, just a clearing-up exercise to reduce the amount of articles in the error categories created by the CS1 citation templates, such as {{cite web}}, more were added at the recent changes to these templates which the job queue is still processing. I could have added a flag to ignore the error categorisation but it was easier to remove the link without affecting the actual detail of the deletion discussion. I think that they are planning to have BOTs do some of the work, but in the meantime several editors are working on the various sub-categories of Category:CS1 errors to make them useful, without having unnecessary clutter. That article was mainly geographical so I made it as such. Either a county article needs creating or the constituency article need to be adapted, County Cleveland or County of Cleveland might be a good name for it or the adapted constituency article. That is what I am saying they needs to be three articles county, constituency and geographic, I have kind of put the constituency article in here it could be reverted with information put back in put back to Cleveland, England.

The county and the geographic information can go in the same article as they are essentially the same thing and located at Cleveland, England. The geographic bits of the county can stay in the county article as per other counties they do not need to be split out. Upper Teesdale should just be about the SSSI site. Pesky political entities come in take a name and leave the old name to gather dust. Teesside, Cleveland, Tees Valley, Teesdale, etcetera all once synonymous and now all have been thrown about. Teesdale and Cleveland are nice old geographic names. Teesside and Tees Valley are synthetic political names but at-least they names don’t sacrifice old names that are now pretty much now able to being geographic. There has already been some discussion on Tees Valley talk page, you could continue there or even the talk page of Cleveland, England. I would be wary of canvassing individuals as that can be biassed towards only those with your point of view, though you should notify WikiProjects noted on the talk pages of the affected articles and the other affected articles with some neutral note on a discussion taking place. Making un-biased list of many views and specialists on maps, history, etcetera and people of Tees, North Yorkshire (and Yorkshire), County Durham, Pennines side and coast side. List compiled from projects. Tees project would be a good creation. If list isn’t used I’ll have it for future reference if I need help in anyways.

I have found a home for the county of Cleveland, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, Teesside article. It is ideal there because Teesside directly spawned from the county. I have also amended constituency page to only talk about that and solved the political problem in Cleveland, England. Recent changes

• You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser uses very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It could lead to downgrade attacks. Since October 29, 2020, users who use old TLS versions will not be able to connect to Wikimedia projects. A list of browser recommendations is available. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [69]
• There is a new automatic tracking category available: Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. It collects pages which use the {{formatnum}} parser function with invalid (non-numeric) input, e.g. {{formatnum:TECHNEWS}}. Note that {{formatnum:123,456}} is also invalid input: as described in the documentation, the argument should be unformatted so that it can be reliably and correctly localised. The tracking category will help identify problematic usage and double-formatting. The new tracking category's name can be translated at translatewiki. [70]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from November 4. It will be on all wikis from November 5 (calendar).
• Administrators and stewards will be able to use a special page (Special:CreateLocalAccount) to force local account creation for a global account. This is useful when account creation is blocked for that user (by a block or a filter). [71]
• The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias on November 4. This change excludes the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias, plus a few smaller Wikipedias with special circumstances. Future changes

• A discussion has been restarted about using a Unicode minus sign (− U+2212) in the output of {{formatnum}} when it is given a negative argument. [73]
• In the future IP addresses of unregistered users will not be shown for everyone. They will get an alias instead. There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There will also be other new tools to help handle vandalism. This is early in the process and the developers are still collecting information from the communities before they suggest solutions.

Hello @Physiotherapist1234:, I would probably classify it as a class-C level at the moment. May be you could contact the projects on the article talk page and ask them for a reassessment of the article. I have had a quick look at the article and a few pointers for you to look at.

1. Provide a conversion of the measurements into imperial for those who do not use metric. See {{convert}}
2. Be consistent with the citation style used. I suggest you change the {{citation}} ones to one of the other templates, such as {{cite web}}, which are predominantly used in the article.
3. Punctuation needs looking at. See ref 4 where there are some double commas.
4. Ref 15 could do with a proper title rather than the name of the website being linked.

@Physiotherapist1234:. I am unsure why they have not created that category as there are several entries in it. See Category:CS1 maint: DOI inactive as of 2020 for an explanation of what the problem could be. The problem in your article is to do with reference 28 which is marked inactive. Clicking on the DOI link in the reference does not find an entry so it could be that there is a typo in the DOI. Keith D (talk) 02:21, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

• You can see reference previews. This shows a preview of the footnote when you hover over it. This has been a beta feature. It will move out of beta and be enabled by default. • From November 16 the categories will not be sorted in order for a short time. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the internationalisation library. Hi - Many thanks for your edits to this article. I was intrigued that you added accessdates to the news citations. In the past I have always added accessdates to news citations but I was recently picked up on this by another editor who removed them all pointing out to me that Template:Cite news says "Access dates are not required for links to published research papers, published books, or news articles with publication dates". Hi Keith; anticipating what you'll do soon - you'll make edits like this to a whole lot of other pages because of the latest batch of infobox substitutions. I don't suppose that you could throttle it back a it, say to 100-150 per hour, so that my watchlist doesn't get swamped? Four times in the last week it's maxed out at 1,000 edits and I've been unable to get to earlier ones.
