Re:FU3 sales

[edit]

Here is the scan of the sales review. There are more nuggets, help yourself. This stuff has been around for years, yet nobody bothered to take a look--surely there are a lot of articles that could use these lists!

  • If you're interested, here is a 1998 sales report which mentions that FU2 sold 3363 copies--quite miserable and contrary to TTLG's info. No idea how you could possibly cite this, however. Electroguv (talk) 21:50, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

MI2

[edit]

I'd like to get Monkey Island 2 to the GA status--it's a shame such a classic doesn't have it yet--and I'm currently having a lot of trouble with finding development info. Could you help me out and try finding something in your sources database (which, as far as I'm concerned, is large enough to cover the entire history of Looking Glass Studios)? Electroguv (talk) 22:56, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • On the subject of MI2--I know you'll retire sooner or later (real sad, considering you reappeared after quite a long absence), but would you like to help me with the article should I put together a decent Development section (which now seems to be the case because I found a few interesting tidbits the other day)?

Mischief Makers in Next Generation

[edit]

Hey JB—would you be able to get me a copy of the Mischief Makers coverage in NG issue 34? czar  00:53, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to drop a note about

I have no way of knowing exactly how much it's been used, but I do see evidence of its impact from time to time, which always makes my day.

I believe I originally found your online sources page when searching for EGM reviews for Mischief Makers—wouldn't have known those archived sources would have existed without your work, so thank you. As a suggestion for your new guide: what would be helpful for me is a pointer to all the online places to search for each platform (where to search for Atari vs. NES vs. SNES/Genesis—what magazines covered each one and the best way to search them systematically). No pressure, just something I was thinking about czar  22:03, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Another favor

[edit]

Hello again, JimmyBlackwing, and thanks once more for your help at Sega Saturn. It turns out there is something else you could assist us with. Red Phoneix used material from the "EGM rates the systems of 1996!" article in Electronic Gaming Monthly 78 (January 1996) for the "Reception" section, but was unsure about the correct page number when I asked him abut it. I noticed you have this issue in your collection, so I was hoping you could look into the matter. Cheers,TheTimesAreAChanging (talk) 22:16, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your effort to find scans online, regardless. Is the citation still accurate, then? Regards,TheTimesAreAChanging (talk) 01:38, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Anachronox

[edit]

So this little number finally has a bronze star on itself. And since you mentioned in the nomination that you helped with acquiring the sources for the article, I wanted to say thanks. Also, you probably should update your "History" section on your user page. Looks to be dated. GamerPro64 00:50, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You know what? I was thinking about an Ion Storm topic after all of this. Heck, I wondering about how to work on the beast that was Daikatana. Mainly because that article was the one that got me into working on Wikipedia. Well at least going on its talk about lead me to the project. So yeah I'm all for it. Deus Ex is already a Good Article too, though it may need cleaning up. Maybe we can start with that one. GamerPro64 14:21, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ion Storm article

[edit]

OK I located the article after a bit of searching but it's not very long really. It was situated in a "PC news in brief" kind of section. Anyway here's the blurb:

  • MacDonald, Thomas L. "Game Views: Inside the Box - News From the World of Electronic Gaming - PC." Games. No.175 (Vol 25, #9). November 2001. Pg.74. ISSN 0199-9788.

  • Believe me when I say I really wish I didn't have to do this, but come on man... you can't just say shit like that. The diff has been RevDel'ed but you know what I'm talking about. And I'm 100% certain that you sincerely know better. I dunno what got into you to post that but I really regret that it happened; please understand that I just couldn't see that and let you off with a warning and still call myself a fair admin. ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  02:13, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My 2¢ (having seen the post and chosen not to reply "WP:NPA") is that a warning would have sufficed czar  02:15, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't seen the post myself but I agree that a warning should've happened first. I swear anything Niemti related brings the worse out of us. GamerPro64 02:18, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Okay, so I may have jumped the gun a bit because I was so shocked to see an editor whom I respect a lot flatout insult another, seemingly unprovoked. I agree a warning would've been better than a full block, and thus I unblocked you, but Jimmy... please don't do that again. :) ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  02:37, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, Salvidrim. At the time, I saw it as an uncontroversial assessment of his behavior over the last several years, from a psychology standpoint. It was never intended to be an outright flame. However, I fired off the remark without much thought, and I was irritated by the idea of BOZ's amazing work being systematically vandalized. I see now that these factors produced a comment that reads like a random, disrespectful and unproductive insult. I regret posting it and causing all of this fuss. Sorry for the bad form, guys. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 03:21, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • For what it's worth, I agree with you on the specifics of this "dispute" and I can certainly understand that tempers can run high when dealing with Niemti. Thanks for not taking my action too harshly, I overreacted slightly (a bit like you did maybe?), so it just goes to prove that nobody's perfect. But if you're gonna fight to the death, at least pick an opponent that's worth your time. *hug* ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  13:34, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dota 2 FAC

[edit]

I appreciate your honest and thorough FAC review. I was more interested in your help, rather than a freebie support vote, so there's no need to apologize for not holding back. That being said, I found your review to be incredibly frustrating for the reason that most of your suggestions were proposed reversals of input that I've received via peer reviews and GANs over the last four years. Seriously, look at them and you will see people insisting that I remove the content that you were insisting upon. That's frustrating to me because I completely agree with all your points, but I have been editing the page at the insistence of others who had certain details that they found imperative for every quality scale benchmark. Nonetheless, your criticism seems the most valid, so I'll do what I can to fix the prose and make the text pragmatic. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 00:41, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jimmy, very nice to hear from you! Of course I've considered something like this, and I planned to actually bring BS5 and BASS to GA status, but of course they're quite a big piece for me, and I've been rather lonely in my Revolution editing, with the exception of your help with copy-editing & plot sections. Plus I've been a little inactive lately. If you'd be willing to jump in, I might get a bit of motivation. :) Cheers, --Khanassassin 18:03, 27 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you have Flight Unlimited III up at FAC. Also, I noticed you saying that once it gains Featured Article status, you would nominate the Looking Glasses topic to Featured Topic. I'm just letting you know that it doesn't have to be nominated. Once a Good Topic has at least 50% of their content be of Featured Content, it automatically becomes a Featured Topic. Hopefully that makes things a bit more easier. GamerPro64 15:24, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Legend of Mana sources

[edit]

Thanks very much for offering with the sources! Well, Legend of Mana come out in NA in June 2000, and JP in July 1999, so articles would be in:

  • a review around EGM issue 133 (August 2000)
  • a review in Next Generation issue 8 (August 2000) with a preview in Next Generation issue 55 (July 1999)
  • OPM US preview in issue 21 (June 1999), news in issue 24 (September 1999), preview again in issue 33 (June 2000), and review probably in issue 35 (August 2000, if you have it)

I'm particularly desperate for development information, so if EGM has anything else I'd really appreciate it. No rush on any of this; I've been moving pretty slowly on this article for a while and I can always jump ahead to Sword of Mana. --PresN 21:45, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! Yeah, the ultimania isn't going to happen- I spent 24 solid hours once hand-OCRing and translating a few mediocre scans of interviews from the Final Fantasy XIII ultimania after an FAC complaint, and I am never ever doing that again. There's no good scans or translations out there, and I don't much feel like spending $30 on a book I can't read for a game I didn't play. --PresN 05:37, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sega (and Sony) sources revisited

[edit]

Hi JimmyBlackwing. You may remember offering me some of your resources if I wanted to go for Dreamcast. I'm finally back from my extended Wikibreak (meh, about two months) and would be ready to go on that. That being said, I also have another question involving if you have sources... I'm working right now on a GA review for PlayStation (console) and honestly it's missing a lot of content. I've suggested a full refit to a user called Jaguar, and he's at work on it, but any sources you have could be really helpful here as well. Much as I may be a Sega nerd, I wouldn't like to leave this article for such an important console just hanging. If you've got anything for either one, that would be fantastic. Thank you, Red Phoenix let's talk... 15:29, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Drakengard topic

I'm glad my work is appreciated. The only one I'm feeling uneasy about bringing up for any kind of review is the Characters article. There aren't really the sources to make it as complete as I would like. Also, I've recently nominated the article for FF character Lightning as an FA, so I prefer to focus fully on that for the time being. Jungle Strike

[edit]

I noticed this listed at WP:VG talk. It was "one of mine" and I've been under the impression it was a GA :S Looking at the talk page it seems I nominated it, then withdrew the nom "for now". The best I can recall, I probably withdrew it during a period of inactivity: I nominated several articles for GA, waited a few weeks during which I ended up having less time; someone then decided to review multiple of my nominations at once and had a go at me because he ended up failing a couple. I'm guessing that was when and why I withdrew the nomination. I guess maybe I should just go ahead and nominate it; though not entirely sure I can be bothered... [edit]

Hi Jimmy,

I regret to say it, but I simply do not have the time nor energy to edit Wikipedia for the foreseeable future. I was really enthused about fixing up the Dota 2 article, but with my new film, I've been stripped of the resources I'd need to edit, so I do believe I must step away. I would, however, be interested in hearing if you'd feel compelled to edit the article yourself and possibly bring it to FA status if you were so willing. You have excellent intuition about this kind of thing, which would be a relief for the article's sake, as I believe I can't help it further at this time. Freedom Planet

[edit]

I don't mean to sound like a tantruming child, but would I be eligible for an exemption of the two-week prohibition for this FAC? It failed on inactivity grounds with no unaddressed feedback; there was one support and one extensive review from a user who wasn't available very often and was almost done, and because there hadn't yet been two supports (though this second reviewer only had one section to go), I couldn't ask for image and source reviews. Again, I don't mean to just pout because I didn't get the result I wanted (I actually reviewed a Video games WikiProject member's GAN in exchange for them reviewing someone else's older FAC); I just don't have anything to work on with it for two weeks, which it looks like is supposed to be the point of the prohibition. Hey JimmyBlackwing, I took a look at the Famitsu reviews of Red Alarm. Sadly the quality of the scan is such that some of the diacritics and especially the smaller radicals in complex kanji were too blurry for me to have more than 90% confidence in my transcript. I'll give you what I produced for what it's worth. You can probably get some kind of a sense of what they're saying by copy&pasting to Google Translate or any of the other online translators. On the other hand the names of the reviewers are quite clear and I'll provide those too. Reviewers in order from top to bottom: Sawadi Noda (サワディ・ノダ), Mizu Pin (水ピン), Isabella Nagano (イザベラ永野), and Ninja Masuda (忍者増田)

Transcript of reviews

(Release date:) 7月21日
(Title:)
(Format, Developer, Release price:)
(First review:) 8 -
(Second review:) 5 -
(Third review:) 7 -

Hopefully you can use some of that. You may already know but PlanetVB is also hosting a 4-page article on the game in the August 1995 issue of Virtual Boy Tsushin (pp.32-35) (link: [2]). The quality of that scan is even worse than the Famitsu article, though. I'm not sure I could get more than 60% of it even with the help of the furigana.

I looked through my Portuguese and Chinese material as well and there are a few references to the game, but only the Portuguese Super GamePower had what I would consider "significant coverage" in the sense meant by GNG (i.e. they devoted a sidebar to the game and images of it), and even that was pretty small. Here is what they said in case it is helpful: "Red Alarm - As imagens deste game de tiro espacial parecem simples demain, até você começar a jogar. Uma visão por trás da nave permite vôos acima, abaixo e em torno de obstáculos e naves inimigas. Seu arsenal inclui lasers e mísseis." (Morales, Marcelo (ed.) "Cicuirto Aberto" Super GamePower No.18, P.11. September 1995. ISSN 0104-611X). Also in their May 1995 issue (No.14) at P.10 they compared the game to Star Fox ("Led [sic] Alarm é um jogo tipo Star Fox produzido pela T & E Soft. Foi montado em wire frames."). I can get you scans of any of these sources if needed. Only one Chinese article I found covered the game, but it was just a listing of VB titles. For what it's worth, the Chinese name for Red Alarm is "红色警报". -Thibbs (talk) 14:26, 15 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OPM info request

[edit]

Hello. I was curious if you might be able to take the time to look at the December 2001 issue of Official PlayStation Magazine. There might be mention in there about a rather unknown game (which was ultimately cancelled) called Jurassic Park: Survival, which was delayed from its 2001 release date and then apparently rescheduled for a January 2002 release. I'm searching for confirmation of that 2002 release date. It might be listed in a game outlook section, or a coming soon section. I would be curious to know what it says about the game, if it's even mentioned in the magazine at all. Thanks. -- InGenuine (talk) 14:18, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies

[edit]

This is going to very wildly come out of the deep blue, but I wanted to apologize for being very curt with you over a year ago. I happened to be re-reading this discussion (reviewing whatever skeletons my closet may hold while secretly mulling over an ArbCom candidacy... shhhh...) and I couldn't help but to cringe when I noticed how discourteous this sounded in retrospect, especially towards an editor whom I respect greatly. There was definitely some frustration involved, but it should not excuse incivility. You owe me a good trouting. :)  · Salvidrim! ·  22:13, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gearing up for another Dota 2 FAC

[edit]

Hey. The last time I nominated Dota 2 for Featured Article status, I closed it up myself and walked away feeling rather helpless, as I saw that that page was littered with virtually impossible input from Eric Corbett, like stating that the game isn't the most actively played title on Steam... which it is, and so on and so forth. I approached copyeditors and we applied a lot of heavy reworking to the page, but I just felt so fucking uninspired after that, so I left the page alone. Well, I recently started editing the page again and cleaned up some newer gunk that's built up. Would you like to thoroughly go through it and tell me if you think I should nominate it for FA status again? DARTHBOTTO talkcont 08:51, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I may need a little time this week to think of how to include all the key points from the article. It's a little tricky to restructure that lead so drastically. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 10:39, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

X-Men vs. Street Fighter

[edit]

Hey JimmyBlackwing! I've been working on improving X-Men vs. Street Fighter (in my sandbox) and looking through the reference library for print sources. I was wondering if you'd be willing to scan the features from Issues 24, 39, and 45 of Next Generation Magazine? There is also some stuff listed for Issues 5 and 8 of Official PlayStation Magazine, but I'm not entirely sure how substantial the information would be, since they're listed under "Other" and "Preview", respectively.

Video games based on tabletop games

[edit]

Hey Jimmy,

I notice you've been putting some good work into the reception sections of mostly 20th-century video game articles, so thanks for that! Some of them should even be GA contenders with a bit more work, and I love to see that kind of progress. Better yet, a few of them had few if any sources at the time and you improved them substantially. I also noticed that, whether intentionally or not, a lot of them fall under a category I created, Category:Video games based on tabletop role-playing games and its child categories (so mostly D&D related, and a few others). I went through that category and its children, as well as sister category Category:Video games based on miniatures games and a limited selection from Category:Video games based on board games as well, and found a number that don't even have reception sections. If you can, please keep these in mind when you are looking for sources!  :)

BOZ (talk) 12:14, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fantastic, thanks! You know, I always meant to come back to those articles and add more details from the Dragon articles, but of course there are always a million other things to do. Keep up the good work! I have other articles I found with slim reception sections, but even as I was compiling the list you were getting some of those done already, so I figured I would just point out the ones with zero reception info and let you do what you do for a while before bringing up the rest.  :) BOZ (talk) 21:15, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Is this the Kingmaker page you're looking for?: Kingmaker (computer game)  ;) Of course, you could also drive yourself completely crazy trying to tackle the 1700 + articles identified as having no sources, but hey one at a time is always the best approach! As for Risk - easily one of my favorite board games - I started The Computer Edition of Risk: The World Conquest Game for the 1989 version years ago. Someone tried to turn that into an article about all of the computer versions at Risk (video game), but they didn't include any information on the other versions except in the infobox. I will try stubifying Risk (1996 video game) later today! BOZ (talk) 11:26, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know about you, but brain farts are getting more common at my age.  ;) I started the 1996 Risk stub earlier today, for whenever you are ready! BOZ (talk) 17:12, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not bothered in the least, in fact I was more worried about bothering you.  ;) I created a redirect for the board game series at Great Battles of History, which I might turn into an article later. As for the video game series, I started a very stubby article at The Great Battles series, whenever you are ready! BOZ (talk) 05:25, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in that case... ;) We could use a resurrection and expansion on the 1984 version of Diplomacy (computer game) (last good revision) if you can find anything there. Another video game based on a tabletop game is Doom Troopers (last good revision) which was redirected at AFD; it is now a section of the parent article and has gained one review since the AFD, but if there were more reviews... BOZ (talk) 11:51, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I finally found enough sources to bring back that Diplomacy video game! :) BOZ (talk) 03:17, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Great work, a reception section on 2/3 of the articles which previously had nothing is a big improvement - and of the remaining 5, all but two of them have some kind of other sources, so that is better than nothing.  :) And several of them have multiple reviews now, so that is fantastic.

So, I took a look at my list and found all the articles that had only one or two reviews under the reception section. So, not as bad as the first list which had no reception section at all, but of course we definitely want to see more than just one or two reviews whenever possible.  :) Anything you can do for these - awesome! Take your time, no rush at all, whenever you can get to these.

BOZ (talk) 05:24, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I will see what I can do! Robert E. Lee has been in the news a lot lately, LOL. I am on vacation at the moment (hooray Gen Con!) and probably won't have time to go to the library next week either, but the week after might be a possibility. BOZ (talk) 06:20, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, Jimmy! Don't know if you had anything left for the list above, but if not that is fine - you did great on about half of them, so I call that a good result. If you are up to taking a look at a few more, I took a look at my list again, and this time I've got a number of them that have 3-4 sources under the reception section; so, that is actually pretty decent, better than a lot of other articles in fact, and certainly enough to make them safe from a GNG perspective, but of course one important part of article improvement is buiding up that reception section to be even stronger, so anything more you can add to these would be fantastic. :)

Robert E. Lee: Civil War General

[edit]

Hi, Jimmy! You are in luck.  :) It took almost two weeks until I had the chance to get to it, but I had a productive evening for you. My local library has a database of newspapers from across the country, some stretching back into the 90s and even a few from the 80s. A lot of them have the full text scanned, but many are just abstracts that contain maybe the first paragraph or two.

So here is what I found for the game Robert E. Lee: Civil War General. I got the full text of articles from the Orlando Sentinel (11/6/1996), the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (11/28/1996), and the Orange County Register (2/23/1997), so I will have to e-mail those to you. This should help to provide some variety to the article instead of just the usual game magazines, eh?

There are five more articles that I did not have the text for, so you may have to find someone who can get copies for you. I know that Paul Erik has sometimes been able to help me with that sort of thing. Those are the Dallas Morning News (10/11/1996), the Fort Worth Star (11/2/1996), the San Diego Union (11/19/1996), Memphis paper Commercial Appeal (1/3/1997), and Cleveland's The Plain Dealer (1/13/1997).

I can definitely help you more like this in the future, but keep in mind that I have (at best) one day a week to go to the library, so if you have specific articles you want to work on let me know.  :) BOZ (talk) 03:19, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PC Gamer Scans

[edit]

Hey Jimmy. In a matter completely unrelated to all things Myth, I wanted to run a quick question past you. I see on your user page that you invite people to make requests for old magazine scans, so, well, you can probably work out why I'm here. Specifically, I'm looking for some PC Gamer scans from August 1994 (a review of Serf City: Life is Feudal), March 1999 (review of The Settlers III), November 2001 (review of The Settlers: Fourth Edition) and May 2005 (review of Heritage of Kings: The Settlers), and some PC Gamer UK scans from June 1994 (review of The Settlers) and March 2005 (review of The Settlers: Heritage of Kings). The catch is that in only one case do I actually have the page I need (the May 2005 issue of PC Gamer; I need page 62). So, I guess, first of all, do you have access to those issues? If you do, have you already uploaded them? I wouldn't expect you to trawl through a bunch of physical magazines searching for one page reviews, but if you've already scanned and uploaded the contents, I'd be happy to search through them myself if you could point me to them. Let me know in your own time, no rush. Bertaut (talk) 03:12, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes

[edit]

Hello Jimmy! I'm looking to improve X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, and could really use your help once again (I previously asked you for scans for X-Men vs. Street Fighter). Would it be possible for you to provide me with scans of any relevant articles from Issues 35 and 40 of Next Generation Magazine, as well as Issue 6 of Official PlayStation Magazine? Thank you for your time! Wani (talk) 21:13, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas!

[edit]

I'm wishing you a Merry Christmas, because that is what I celebrate. If you don't like Christmas or just don't celebrate it in any of its forms, then please accept a generic "Happy Holidays". If you celebrate no holidays at this time of year, then hopefully you will be satisfied with an even more generic "Season's Greetings".  :) BOZ (talk) 01:01, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Over six years late, but I just wanted to say very nice job on this article. I visited the article planning to add any good relevant info from the article in Next Generation 26, only to find you'd saved me the trouble, and then some. Hope you're enjoying 2018.--Martin IIIa (talk) 21:38, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

TFA

[edit]

Just to let you know I've scheduled Flight Unlimited III for TFA on 28 Feburary 2018. You can see the suggested blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 28, 2018. Please make any changed/adjustments you feel necessary. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:18, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Halo: Combat Evolved for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. JOEBRO64 19:27, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PC Gamer scans - 2002 awards

Always more than glad to help. Here are the scans of the PC Gamer awards from 2002. [6] --SubSeven (talk) 01:08, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PC Gamer scans for Awards #9 and #11

[edit]

Hi JimmyBlackwing
Here you are:

The Ninth Annual PC Gamer Awards (March 2003 - #108)
The 11th Annual PCG Awards (March 2005 - #134)

Sorry it was sort of a rush job so some of the text by the spine may be illegible. Please let me know if you need anything rescanned or otherwise explained or made legible. I can also supply any info like ISSNs, Editor in Chief, article authors, etc if needed, and I believe the page numbers are all found at the bottom of each page. -Thibbs (talk) 04:06, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Halo scans

[edit]

Hey Jimmy! This inquiry has to do with the fact that I'm monitoring the FAR situation that's been brewing over the Halo Wikipedia entry lately. As far as I'm concerned the development overview is not one of the article's strongest suits and I'd be willing to address this flaw in the meantime, but to that end I need access to a crucial article in Electronic Gaming Monthly's February 2002 issue titled "Afterthoughts – Halo", which explains the rationale behind some of the more fundamental revisions made to the game during its development. The WP:VG's print sources database names you as the issue's possessor, but the notice at the top of your talk page states that your magazine collection will be out of your reach for the majority of 2018. Still, I would be much obliged if you could grant access to the relevant scans in the short run. Electroguv (talk) 11:27, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks Jimmy, it's nice that your help can be counted on as always. However, I should note that I was lucky enough to get my hands on these scans some time prior to your post on the talk page for Halo. Electroguv (talk) 23:03, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Anyway, as you've already pointed out, Halo's development is very well documented indeed, perhaps excessively so. Considering the amount of media coverage the topic has received over the years, it seems that the scope of the work required is daunting, even discouraging in fact. With this in mind, it is quite a relief to see that you're willing to lend a helping hand. Keep up the good work! Electroguv (talk) 23:23, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Interplay (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

TJ & Earl FA and GA

[edit]

ToeJam & Earl recently(-ish)lost its FA status; I demurred from trying to prevent this because 1. time constraints prevented it (constraints imposed by people who love or pay me), 2. Wikipedia largely treats those who contribute with contempt (Niemti;snaake;whoeverthefuck is finally a recognised whackamole puppeteer, who'd have thought?), but anyway, let's not not dwell on that. 3. I didn't really see how the reception section of an early '90s middle-weight game could be improved - it cost real money the first time. And part of me wants to see Wikipedia die and be replaced by probably multiple alternatives. Anyway... the short of this is that TJ&Earl appears to have lost its GA status too. Does a fallen FA get bumped down to C-class even if it went through a separate successful GA review? I'm sure I could ask at a wikiproject or a helpdesk, but I'd prefer someone with a brain ;) bridies (talk) 14:43, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's B-class, not C-class, for what that's worth. bridies (talk) 15:01, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks man. I'll look into it myself it I get time and can muster the inclination. bridies (talk) 15:04, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Next Generation reviews

[edit]

Hi Jimmy! I have lately been working a little bit on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Reference library/Next Generation Magazine page, which I see you have an interest in. I don't know how much time I will put into it overall, but I added or fixed a number of links, and I also tossed up a few little stubby articles about games that I found at least one other review for. I will probably do a little work on that from time to time when I am bored. :) BOZ (talk) 16:25, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The page has a lot more redlinks than I expected, although most of it is just because the page is probably overdue on maintenance. A lot of the redlinks had actual articles but were pointing at non-existent titles so I either made reasonable redirects or fixed the link on the reference page, and some were just typos, a few had been deleted, and some of the blue links were due to pointing at the wrong article or at disambiguation pages so I fixed those links as well. Some of the remaining redlinks I actually created articles for, and I restored one of the deleted articles - Burning Soldier which had no sources on the article 10 years ago, but I found a few... the article needs massive cleanup though. I did not add the NG reviews to most of the articles though, but hopefully fixing up the links on the page will inspire someone to go through them. :) I have finished the issues #1 and #2 so far. BOZ (talk) 19:29, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I also created little stubs for anything that was still a redlink for the first two issues so far. Some of them may be redirected or deleted, but at least I put a starting point up there in case there truly are more sources to expand them. :) BOZ (talk) 11:59, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Armored Fist was previously deleted due to copyright violations so there was nothing to restore, so I just started it over from scratch.  :) Armored Fist 2 is linked to a few reviews, so I will see if I can start that one too. BOZ (talk) 12:07, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Was I right to put U.S. Navy Fighters on the Jane's games template? The articles made it look like it was part of that series, or at least a precursor. BOZ (talk) 01:48, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've gotten through the first three issues of NG. Martin did some work on Burning Soldier, so it is a lot better now. I have started (or restored) a number of other articles on games from the era using reviews from the (so far) first three issues of Next Generation as starting points - including Battlecorps, Doctor Hauzer, Shadow: War of Succession, Family Feud, Motocross Championship, Zephyr, NHL All-Star Hockey '95, PGA Tour Golf III, The Shadow, and more! In cases where I found the games on pages like Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Reference library/GameFan or Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Reference library/Computer Gaming World, I made notes of this below the reception section, since I do not have access to the reviews myself. BOZ (talk) 03:14, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey cool, Gazillionaire is one of the articles that I created as part of this project, cool to hear that it won an award. :) BOZ (talk) 13:26, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So far, all of the few dozen articles I have created while going through the Next Generation review list are still around. For the 3DO version of the Yū Yū Hakusho (1994 video game) published by Tomy (last good version), I have not found any other sources yet, so someone redirected it to Tomy. I was wondering if you have seen anything that can be used to restore the article? According to the List of Yu Yu Hakusho video games there were quite a few, but this was the only one for the 3DO. BOZ (talk) 13:27, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, great! That will probably be enough for me to give it another try at least. :) BOZ (talk) 13:55, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Refideas

[edit]

Hi JimmyBlackwing, I've noticed you have been looking up obscure sources on video games and posting them on the talk pages. :-) Unfortunately, the way you are posting them right now (in a new section at the bottom of the talk page), they are barely visible to new editors. However, there is a template called {{refideas}} that exists specifically for this purpose: displaying new and used references on the top of the talk page (under the project tags). To see how it works, check out Talk:Nox (video game). Thanks, and keep up the good work! --Koveras  07:03, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tonic Trouble magazine scans

[edit]

Hey there! I found your name listed as contact person in the VG reference library for Next Generation and wondered if you could provide me with a couple scans for the game Tonic Trouble, from NGen as well as some others. As per the reference libraries, there should be: a preview and a review in Next Generations' July 1997 and October 1999 issues, a preview and a review in EGM's January 1997 and September 1999 issues, a preview in GameFan from February 1998 and a review in Nintendo Power from September 1999. Please let me know which of these you can provide. Lordtobi () 16:09, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Copyio?

[edit]

I'm a bit confused regarding this editor of yours. How exactly is linking to a site that provides information and a download link for a magazine (that the site is apparently legally able to provide) copyright violation? Furthermore, you only nulled half of all Retromags links, which only adds to the confusion. I'm watching this page so you can also reply right here. Lordtobi () 21:17, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EGM for Lumines series?

[edit]

Do you have any content for Lumines series? I'm trying to make Lumines Live! and possibly Lumines Supernova into articles instead of redirects. Lumines: Puzzle Fusion also references EGM's top 50 games of 2005. If you have the information, interviews, etc. that would be very helpful.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 23:23, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Computer Gaming World review

[edit]

I think you're going to like this! No, no, no... not a review from CGW, but a review of the first issue of CGW from the magazine Space Gamer! I saw that and I said, wow! Now normally, I would just pull a sentence or two from the review and add it to an existing article as I work through User:BOZ/The Space Gamer (most of it is tabletop games, but as I move through the early 1980s issues there have been more computer game reviews) but in this case maybe you want to see the full review in case you want to make more use of it? BOZ (talk) 16:54, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's about 5 paragraphs in all, so I will type it up later today and I will send it to you by e-mail. It is from the January 1982 issue, so you might find the insight into the very early history of CGW insightful! BOZ (talk) 17:09, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I added a little bit from that review to the article so you have the citation information, and I e-mailed you the full text. Feel free to use that however you wish! BOZ (talk) 02:32, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:19, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of Cryo Interactive video games

[edit]

Hey, sorry to bother you! Aside from my comment on Talk:Gift (video game), if you wanted to do more with Cryo games, I decided to take a look at the List of Cryo Interactive video games and see what games still do not have articles in English WP but do have articles on French WP. Those might result in future articles?

There were others, but they had fewer citations than these. 73.168.15.161 (talk) 03:08, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Thanks for the tips. As it stands, my interest in Cryo is mostly limited to its adventure games like Egypt, Atlantis and Dune—the other releases haven't really come onto my radar so far. I might eventually branch out and help to expand coverage of its other titles, but, for right now, it's not really my lane. I appreciate your efforts in spotting these articles, though. They definitely look like promising conversions to the English Wikipedia—if you're bilingual or comfortable with Google Translate (my personal option), I don't believe there's anything preventing an IP user from being bold and making the conversion themselves. Cryo's coverage is pretty substandard on the English Wikipedia right now, so every little bit helps. Happy editing! JimmyBlackwing (talk) 03:48, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK! And, I must say that your improvements on those articles are getting them looking much better, as per the usual. 73.168.15.161 (talk) 11:39, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! JimmyBlackwing (talk) 16:38, 23 August 2018 (UT:C)
As someone who has spent a lot of time and energy creating articles on graphic adventure games of the 90s and early 00s (of which Cryo is a key developer), this conversation is quite interesting to me. :) Due to work, I'm not sure how much time I can invest into these articles, but if I have a spare moment at the computer, instead of wondering what article to edit, I'll have a discrete list to follow which is a time-saver. :)--Coin945 (talk) 23:48, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Coin945, I am glad you were able to make some use out of this! :) You could possibly also restore Gift using the French version. You might be able to make an article out of Hard Boiled, but it has no French article at this time.
On an unrelated note, I tried to restore Total Recall (video game) not long ago (last good version), but it got redirected again due to lack of notability. I see that it had reviews in Power Play, Your Sinclair, and The One based on the WP:VG Reference library, but I do not have access to those magazines. Likewise, I tried to restore Doom Troopers (last good version) which was also redirected again, and I see that it had another review in GameFan and could have reviews elsewhere? Could either of you take a look and see if you have access to those sources? 73.168.15.161 (talk) 20:27, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hey @73.168.15.161:, I have an exciting challenge for you. I've posted some sources for Gift below. Have a crack at writing a nice article on the game using those sources. The WP:VG community will be able to help you out if you get stuck but be WP:BOLD and give it a go. :) --Coin945 (talk) 09:08, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, Coin945!  :) Do you see anything more for Total Recall, or Doom Troopers? I would see what I can do with them as well. I'm all for BOLD attempts. ;) 73.168.15.161 (talk) 13:22, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Coin945, thank you tonnes, LOL! I am getting to work on that one right now. I also split The City of Lost Children (video game) from the movie article this morning, but did not need to do anything more with it as it was pretty well developed already. One last thing, I would also like to bring back Doom Troopers as I mention above, do you see anything more for that one? 73.168.15.161 (talk) 03:02, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Blizzard Entertainment

[edit]

What year do you classify Blizzard as starting to self-publish their own titles? I find it confusing as companies like Sierra and Knowledge Adventure (also part of the same company as Blizzard) would publish games under their own name, but never their parent company's name. Looking Glass & Mini Racers

[edit]

Hey there! Browsing Wikipedia today I was very impressed with your work on games relating to Looking Glass Studios, but it appears that you missed one Looking Glass game: Mini Racers, a project developed with Shigeru Miyamoto but later canceled. Currently, it has no article at all. Do you think it would be feasible for that game to also receive its own article, maybe at a comparable quality to the others? Also, would you be willing to help out with the primary Looking Glass article? It's been in a bad shape for years, and I just now started to clean it up using two separate features from Polygon (2015) and Retro Gamer (2018). Lordtobi () 23:35, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wargames

[edit]

Hi, Jimmy! Just showing off a bit, I guess, but of course if you see anything you like, you can always add to it. :) As you are undoubtedly keenly aware, computer wargames have been a pretty consistent genre since the very inception of the idea of a video game, and I know you have done lots of work on lots of wargame articles. As you are also aware, I have been fairly active on improving and adding plenty of retro game articles. I figure I have done enough of those so far that I can bring up some of what I have done in case you want to have a look. :)

First of all, most recently I made Carriers at War into an article about the game series, and broke it up into Carriers at War 1941–1945: Fleet Carrier Operations in the Pacific (1984), Carriers at War (video game) (1992), and Carriers at War II (1993).

As part of my work on Next Generation, I have added some wargame articles, but not as many from that mid-1990s area, including Armored Fist, U.S. Navy Fighters, Midnight Raiders, Front Lines, Rapid Deployment Force: Global Conflict, The Pure Wargame, Tank Commander (video game), D-Day: America Invades, Black Fire (video game), Flying Nightmares, Agile Warrior F-111X, Werewolf vs. Comanche, Empire II: The Art of War, Scramble Cobra, Top Gun: Fire At Will, and American Civil War: From Sumter to Appomattox - odds are you've seen a few of these already, and I'm sure I've pointed out a few to you. :) Several of those are tank games or combat flight simulators, but for the sake of argument, I am including anything where non-fantastic combat or warfare is the primary form of gameplay, as a wargame.

As part of my work on The Space Gamer, I have added a few early titles from the late 1970s and early 1980s, including Air Raid (1978 video game), FS1 Flight Simulator, Winged Samurai, North Atlantic Convoy Raider, Torpedo Fire, Voyage of the Valkyrie, and I also just added what I figured was a very necessary redirect of Microcomputer Games to Avalon Hill. :)

There are a whole lot of retro games, particularly those which are more purely wargames, which do not have articles yet. If I find reviews, I will continue to add them! In particular, for example, I was looking at the earliest SSI games and there are several such wargames in its early catalogue that are just waiting to be created. BOZ (talk) 04:23, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I will see what I can find for Operation Crusader and Stalingrad by Atomic Games! BOZ (talk) 12:43, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I put up some very basic stub articles for Operation Crusader and World at War: Stalingrad. :) BOZ (talk) 15:45, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of wargames, I was adding some "missing" games from the CGW's 150 Best PC Games list, and just now I put up Gettysburg: The Turning Point, Solitaire's Journey, Kampfgruppe, TV Sports: Football, Fighter Duel Pro 2, and War in Russia - I'm sure at least some of those will interest you. :) There are a few more wargame articles from that list that I will start in the near future! BOZ (talk) 01:10, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK! I got the last six games from that list, and again I think you may be interested in a few of them.  :) I started MiG Alley Ace, NukeWar, Crystal Caliburn, Typhoon of Steel (video game), Tigers on the Prowl, and Courtside College Basketball. BOZ (talk) 02:26, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. I was observing the French versions of wargaming articles, and I notice that their coverage of earlier wargames is much more comprehensive than what we have! BOZ (talk) 04:32, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They sure are, for example I saw the big difference between List of Strategic Simulations games on which almost half the games are redlinks and Liste de jeux Strategic Simulations on which maybe 10% are redlinks. Also, our video game section on List of Avalon Hill games is fairly small, but their Avalon Hill article has a much larger list and a lot more bluelinks than our list. Maybe 1/3 of the games on our List of MicroProse games are redlinks, while the list on their MicroProse is again only about 10% redlinks. I could go on, but I am sure you get the idea. :) BOZ (talk) 14:04, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. If you celebrate no holidays at this time of year, then hopefully you will be satisfied with an even more generic "Season's Greetings".  :) BOZ (talk) 21:46, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Monster Truck Madness

[edit]

Hi Jimmy Blackwing, I'm Aya Syameimaru! I've just recently rewritten and cleaned up the article Monster Truck Madness, which you edited before 2020. I want this to be a GAN. Here's a page illustrating what I've done here: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Monster_Truck_Madness&type=revision&diff=942502778&oldid=928167608 Aya Syameimaru 文々。 02:06, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh btw, I was influenced by the Midtown Madness article to do this thing. Aya Syameimaru 文々。 02:07, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jimmy. As you know more about writing adventure games, I was wondering if you can help me at least understand what the gameplay in Dun Darach is. Reading about it confuses me and I can't make sense of it while trying to finish writing about it. GamerPro64 05:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice, Jimmy. Its now a Good Article. GamerPro64 21:14, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Iron Soldier

[edit]

Hi! Hey, sorry for bothering you but are you interested in expanding the reception section of Iron Soldier, Iron Soldier 2 and Iron Soldier 3? I'm pretty decent at finding reviews for games but I absoulutely suck at writing what critics thought about them. If you could help me in getting that part of each title in the trilogy done, I would be extremely grateful! Also, if you could also expand Highlander: The Last of the MacLeods' reception section then that would be extremely cool! I hope you're doing well mate... Need sources for Uprising series

[edit]

Hey, as you probably noticed, I've been doing some work on all articles on the Uprising series - I want to get these articles to Featured Article status, if not Good Article. Any magazine scans you have relating to Uprising: Join or Die, Uprising X and Uprising 2: Lead and Destroy would be very helpful. MiasmaEternalTALK 05:22, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Next Gen - almost done!

[edit]

Hi there! :) Just checking in, since I have not talked to you in a while. I have only 8 issues left to go of Next Generation - that puts me at about 90% done.  ;) I think I have long been considering Computer Gaming World as my next stop, so that is likely where I shall head! That one will take a long time, LOL.  :) But hopefully in that case, there are a larger percentage of reviews already on the article; I have found that only a very small percentage of Next Gen reviews (not counting previews and other articles) were already on game article pages. Oh well, now I have mostly fixed that! Probably by the end of the month or thereabouts, I will be done with Next Gen. :) BOZ (talk) 21:30, 1 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Next Generation creations needing sources

[edit]

I am going to be taking one final pass over my NG creations most likely starting either tomorrow or Friday. As I go, I will pull out any that have been redirected (only one was deleted outright) and let you know so that you can search for sources. I figured it also makes sense to bring up any for which I have found no other sources besides NG, since those are likely to be eventually deleted as well? It may take me a week or so to do what I am going to do with that list, so you may get a few or several daily, and I can slow up or pause whenever you need. For redirected articles, I will include a link to the last good version of the article.

For now, the most recent creations of mine to be redirected are: Bass Rush: ECOGEAR PowerWorm Championship[16] (which was called "Bass Rush Dream" in the magazine); Last Kingdom[17]; and Reel Fishing: Wild[18]. I don't know, see if you can do anything with those? BOZ (talk) 20:14, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Partly to satisfy my own curiosity, I went ahead and counted all the articles that I created or restored during my NG-run, and I came up with a total of 364, more than I thought it would be! I also counted them by years, because I felt that the oldest issues resulted in the most creations by me, and I was right - by far. 1995 resulted in 117 creations/restoration (which is easily the most) and then the next two years had a serious drop-off, with 65 in 1996 and 63 in 1997, and even fewer than that in the remaining years, with 40 in 1998, 23 in 1999, 22 in 2000, and then back up a little to 34 in 2001 (the only time I had an increase). The ones I have been adding to your page are those for which I found fewer than three reception sources, which so far has come to about 1/3 of the articles on the list, so that means that they may bunch up a bit in the first several issues, but once we get through that it should drop off a lot. I looked through the reviews listed on the Reference library page and there is some correlation on how many reviews were actually done in each issue - the first year had more than most other years - but that does not account for the decrease entirely, as I figure maybe people just did less creation of the older retro games than the newer retro games (especially those which were not very old when Wikipedia was started) so maybe that is why I had fewer to do as the issues went on. Anyway, just musing aloud. You really are helping me about a lot with these, so I appreciate the effort. :) BOZ (talk) 21:52, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Allrighty, looks like you hit that busy patch. ;) We will continue with the nextgen page as time allows. Next week, I am planning to move on to the next phase of what I am going to do - it's kinda big, but you'll see it when I am ready. :) BOZ (talk) 14:11, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just going through and compiling the rest of the list now for the nextgen page; like I figured, the second year (1996) is going to be a lot less than the first year, in fact it looks to be about less than half. I'll probably be spending the next few days or maybe the rest of the week on that, and then I will have a big reveal. :) BOZ (talk) 23:09, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I finished plotting out what I will eventually be putting on the sandbox page, and it went pretty closed to the way I was expecting - in fact, really fewer articles than I was expecting. The third year has fewer than the second year, and the remaining years are merely handfuls. So, once we get past that big hurdle of the first year, it gets smaller and smaller. :) Meanwhile, for the rest of today I am going to start doing some absolutely necessary cleanup that I had been neglecting, which I will continue tomorrow and hopefully be done with by Friday, so that I can move on to my next big project hopefully next week! BOZ (talk) 20:02, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So, of course that was the big "reveal" I was planning. :) I am going to move on to my next project probably later this week, or sometime next week! Talk to you soon. BOZ (talk) 16:24, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Will do, might be as early as tomorrow! BOZ (talk) 19:33, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Letting you know as promised, that I just started working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Reference library/Computer Gaming World. :) BOZ (talk) 17:38, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey hey, looks like you're back for now at least? :) I am on break from creating new articles for now, but if you are up for continuing where we left off, there are still several at User:JimmyBlackwing/nextgen#1996 needing some love. :) BOZ (talk) 22:06, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hia Jimmy - Close Combat Info - Inaccuracies And Some facts missed.

[edit]

Hi Jimmy,

I have no idea if I know you or not, But I worked as Director of Operations at Matrix Games, both choosing which titles we would publish and attending Many E3's, Origins and many other conventions. I also took over the wargamer and took it from a loss making site to a $120K profit in my first 9 months. I also ran Military Gamer Online.

I then set up my own company CSO Simteck which developed the Unusable code given to the USMC by Atomic for which they got 1.3 Million. KZ walked away laughing from that one.

We, or my company Simteck worked closely with Destineer, DAARPA, PMTRASYS [US] and the Royal Airforce Regiment [UK] together with other agencies. The page is missing much factual information. The contract for the Close Combat Source Code was Simteck, we got Destineer out of 2 massive holes, both caused by Atomic. I acn explain more and have 30 years developing video games. The last person who ran editing for this page was utterly clueless and knew nothing about CC or any video Game. Close Combat Marines was the very first simulation to be part of training for junior leaders with the USMC, it was part of the curriculum that they had to pass. The first simulation way before VBS etc. I worked at 29 Palms, Camp Lejune and many other places, working with the infantry schools.

I look forward to your response.

Kind Regards - Shaun Wallace — Preceding unsigned comment added by SavantOz (talkcontribs) 18:49, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, Shaun. Thanks for getting in touch. As required by Wikipedia's Five Pillars, the short section about Close Combat: Marines on the Close Combat page was based on published news articles about the game, rather than original research on my part. Specifically, the source was this 2004 report from IGN, which states that Close Combat: Marines was a collaboration between Atomic and the USMC, and was first released in 2003. That said, I'm definitely open to the possibility of IGN's being wrong (it wouldn't be the first time), and I've got to say that Close Combat: Marines was very hard to find any reliably-published sources about at all. Doing some Googling about the information in your message does turn up bits and pieces about CSO Simtek being founded in 2004 and working in some capacity on Close Combat: Marines, but there's nothing definitive I could use as a source to replace the IGN report.
I understand it's frustrating that Wikipedia only allows information that's already been published by a designated reliable source. However, the rule is in place to keep Wikipedia neutral, so that it doesn't devolve into a bunch of editors pushing their own points of view. That doesn't mean, though, that we can't rectify the issue on the Close Combat page. If the information about CSO Simtek's contract with the USMC has been published (in a magazine, a newspaper, a reliable website, or even an old blog post of CSO Simtek's), I can use that source to update the page. Until then, sadly, I'm afraid my hands are tied. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 19:48, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jimmy, I have a lot of stuff related to this. Copies of CCM [Close Combat Marines] CCRAF [Small unit infantry Trainer]. I have the workbooks provided by the USMC together with the simulation. I have sealed copies of CC1,2, 3, 4 and 5. Also Road to Bahgdad which was released by Destineer as a zip file lol. The Govt Paid Atomic, 6.2 Million to build a new Anti Terror trainer. I met up with Keith Z at I/ITSEC and he had code that would not run, it was utterly ridiculous. Thats when Destineer took over, at that point there was about $800,000 left. Destineer paid Simtek to bail them out, by using the old CC code and creating a working CCM. They needed a new anti terror trainer for the FAST guys. They also needed a JTAC trainer, which is Joint Terminal Air/Arty/Mortars etc. This had to be a precise trainer with total reality as if the junior leaders were calling for fire. I guys I remember [a USMC Capt] coming out crying, he had called for fire on his own men and he was due to ship out to Afghanistan. We also did a CC version, which showed the 3 block war in the USMC booth as you walk into the pentagon, that the public could play.

This link has some information: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/qanda-close-combat-to-get-new-lease-on-life/1100-6160284/

Here is a very shortened list of some of the games I worked on: https://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,127851/

Only games where you are mentioned in the credits are ever put onto MobyGames. Its something no one in the games industry can touch. You will see that there is very little I was not involved in the CC renaissance.

I attended probably 7 E3s. IGN were not great even back then. They were tiny compared to Gamespot and other sites. I also had an article written by Will Trotter about me taking over the Wargamer published in PC Gamer. There is an awful lot of stuff out there.

I attempted to upload some shots of CCM in use and other stuff, but wiki wld not let me upload anything.

Hope this is informative.

Cheers - Shaun — Preceding unsigned comment added by SavantOz (talkcontribs) 22:45, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'll see what I can do to address the issue over the next few days. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 23:03, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jimmy,

LMK if any material would help you. A Colonel [Then a Major] McBreen wrote numerous articles about CC and he wrote the workbook that went with every copy of CCM / CCMAT / CCMJTAC. I have a lot of photos, files, etc etc. The link from Moby proves that I was involved with every version of the rebuilds. I have magazine articles [scanned] and so much other stuff.

Cheers mate - Shaun — Preceding unsigned comment added by SavantOz (talkcontribs) 12:44, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip about McBreen, Shaun—searching his name helped me turn up more information. I've taken a stab at revising the section a bit. I was lucky enough to find CSO Simtek's old site in the Wayback Machine, which contained two paragraphs that helped me figure out the situation:
CCM is a creation of Atomic Games, who started the Close Combat series of games back in 1996. Since then there have been 5 commercial releases until CCM, at which time a further commercial release was made in 'The Road to Baghdad'.
CCM is part of The On-line Lab, which is part of a Programme of on-going development to expand the range of features and functions as a Training Simulator. CSO SimTek, working with the USMC, are creating and modifying the Simulator to enable the Marine TDS Training Programme to grow and develop.
I used this as a source to explain the role that CSO had versus Atomic on Marines. Also turned up a few other interesting bits and pieces of info in the process, which offer more context for the reasons behind Marines' creation. Thanks again for getting in touch. World Rally

[edit]

Hi man! I hope you're doing well. I recently created an article for Gaelco's World Rally, which was a pretty popular top-down arcade racing game. I did almost everything by myself except the development section, which needs to be worked upon further. If you're interested (knowing your history with Spanish titles), i'll leave that part up to you but if you're not interested on it then that's OK, i'll do it myself... Roberth Martinez (talk) 20:07, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@JimmyBlackwing:Hey Jim! How're you doing? I just wanted to know if you had anything in regards to Gaelco's Alligator Hunt? I'm looking for some sources talking about it. I've found a few but I looking some others outside of my reach. If you can help me you then that would be cool. Roberth Martinez (talk) 16:48, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Amazing!

[edit]

How did you do that? So many references, it’s like mana from heaven! Thanks so much for that, feel free to rain down on any other start level articles we have left, especially the game ones... Judgesurreal777 (talk) 13:48, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you ever get the chance, could you do that to Front Mission 3 or Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, or Treasure of Rudras? Any of them could use a notability shower. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 13:57, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

CGW reviews

[edit]

Hi Jimmy, I figured I would start a new section for this one. :) At this point I am in the early 1980s so the sources may be harder to find than they will be for later games, but that does not mean they do not exist, so maybe you have some ideas. Do you see anything that can be added for SSI game The Battle of Shiloh (video game) for starters? BOZ (talk) 12:38, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Understood - it's definitely a more difficult era for which to dig up sources! I think this one can easily be saved though, based on the sources available in the French version of the article. :) BOZ (talk) 12:42, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there!  :) In an effort to better educate myself on how to find sources on games from the early 1980s, I have been looking at already-existing articles that I created within the last few years to see what other sources people have added to them, so I am sharing with you so we can both learn.  :) I have been mostly looking at old magazines, and I learned that from that era console and computer games were mostly reviewed in computer magazines where they shared space with hardware and non-game software in the reviews columns. See how many of them start with the word "soft" for example - Softline, Softalk, and SoftSide – and there were some for TRS-80 computers as well, like 80 Micro and one called 80-U.S. As far as I know, CGW was the first dedicated magazine for computer games, although I think Electronic Games came right around the same time. As more such magazines cropped up, I imagine the game reviews decreased in the computer magazines. Sofline archives are available on the CGW Museum website (go look!) and the other magazines I mentioned are on archive.org, so I will undoubtedly be going back to check on those and other contemporaries to beef up the articles I have created. :) BOZ (talk) 02:30, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just an update on my progress there, I have reached 1984 on Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Reference library/Computer Gaming World. :) Also, as an extension of what I was talking about in my previous post, I also compiled User:BOZ/Early computer game reviews. :) I also started a draft for The Third Courier that I am working on. Been busy, LOL. BOZ (talk) 18:41, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I did pull up a few of the sources and added them to to that draft, do you see anything more than can be easily found and added? BOZ (talk) 19:45, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jimmy, do you see anything more that can be used to improve Berserker Raids? BOZ (talk) 04:51, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just to update, I have gotten up to 1986 on the CGW reviews page. :) There is a good variety of games there, but I think the largest genre covered so far have to be wargames! BOZ (talk) 20:54, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you see anything more to expand the Macintosh version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, developed by subLogic and published by Microsoft in 1986? It can be tough to weed through all the other versions to find anything for this one. BOZ (talk) 19:43, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On the topic of wargames, I only just recently realized that traditional tabletop wargaming company Game Designers' Workshop also produced computer games, after starting articles on The Battle of Chickamauga and Rommel: Battles for Tobruk. The article on the company itself doesn't say much if anything about that, unlike the article for Avalon Hill or smaller wargame publisher Simulations Canada - both of which I have also started plenty of articles for - so, in case you come across some good sources to back that up for GDW, that's something that could use some work. :) The Mobygames page for the company: [19] shows that they didn't produce very many games, but there were enough that I think it should be mentioned somehow. BOZ (talk) 18:08, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In case you didn't catch it, I know that you have been working on Gary Grisgby games late, so I am just letting you know that CGW led me to start Warship (video game) today. :) BOZ (talk) 21:48, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You might get something useful from this issue, pages 6-8!: [20]

If you were looking for any more wargame articles to work on, aside from ones you already worked on or that I mentioned earlier in this thread, my work on CGW has led me to starting the articles Napoleon's Campaigns: 1813 & 1815 (SSI), Operation Apocalypse (SSI), Southern Command (video game) (SSI), Pursuit of the Graf Spee (video game) (SSI), Dnieper River Line (AH), The Road to Gettysburg (SSI), Armor Assault (Epyx), Call to Arms (1982 video game) (Sirius), Battle for Normandy (video game) (SSI), Combat Leader (SSI), Operation Whirlwind (video game) (Broderbund), Under Southern Skies (video game) (AH), Road to Moscow (Ba'rac), Panzer-Jagd (AH), After Pearl (SUPERware), Breakthrough in the Ardennes (SSI), Gulf Strike (video game) (AH), Napoleon at Waterloo (Krentek), Operation Market Garden (video game) (SSI), Crusade in Europe (video game) (Microprose), Decision in the Desert (Microprose), At the Gates of Moscow 1941 (Strategic Games Publications), Battle of Antietam (video game) (SSI), Nam (1986 video game) (SSI), Clash of Wills (Digital Kamp Group), Operation Keystone (video game) (Overt Strategic Simulations), Blue Powder Grey Smoke (Gardé Games of Distinction), and Strategic Conquest Plus (PBI Software). As you can see, the majority are from Strategic Simulations; thanks too for creating that template for Simulations Canada - apparently all of their computer games also had physical wargame opponents, but despite this novelty I have been having a hard time finding coverage for their games outside of CGW! Searching for additional sources for the rest of these games has resulted in mixed results. BOZ (talk) 19:48, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Issue #40 was another good one for wargames - today, I started Russia: The Great War in the East 1941-1945, Rommel at Gazala, Guderian (video game), and Rebel Charge at Chickamauga. :) BOZ (talk) 17:44, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
One new wargame today, Napoleon in Russia: Borodino 1812. BOZ (talk) 18:57, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Another new one today on a traditional wargame theme - Shiloh: Grant's Trial in the West - as well as a couple more that might be considered wargames, Ralph Bosson's High Seas and Darkhorn: Realm of the Warlords. BOZ (talk) 19:35, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you see anything for this Avalon Hill wargame?: Civil War (1988 video game) - I see that it was mentioned on page 138 of this issue of CGW: [21] BOZ (talk) 22:53, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I started several helicopter simulator articles today in case you are into that sort of thing. :) BOZ (talk) 02:17, 13 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I found this in British magazine Page 6: [22] BOZ (talk) 00:31, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I started several sports games today and also Sons of Liberty (video game). :) BOZ (talk) 20:05, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Among others, today I started Long Lance: A Computer Game of Tactical Naval Combat in the South Pacific. BOZ (talk) 19:32, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you see anything more for Dolphin Sailing System? BOZ (talk) 15:20, 25 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Today, I started Romance of the Three Kingdoms (video game) and Rommel: Battles for North Africa, and a few political-themed games. :) BOZ (talk) 18:53, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Among others, today I started Steel Thunder and Decisive Battles of the American Civil War, Vol. 2 which you may be interested in. BOZ (talk) 19:53, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Volume III has at least one review, will keep an eye out for more: [23] BOZ (talk) 23:29, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if there are any sources out there for The Seven Spirits of Ra. I started several new ones today, but I am probably not going to do any more work on video game articles for the foreseeable future. BOZ (talk) 19:01, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be back on video game articles one day, but that will probably be hopefully far enough in the future that whatever negativity has risen against me will die down. In the meantime, I'm not going to continue to dedicate my time on something that's not even my main interest. Still, it calls back to me from time to time and I'm sure I'll be back one day. :) BOZ (talk) 01:26, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In case your watchlist has not been lighting up lately with my edits for you to figure it out, I will let you know that while I am on an extended break from working on CGW, I have been going back through my CGW-related creations and going through archive.org to find additional reviews and articles to make sure that I can prove as many of these meet the GNG as I can, and also to find sources that can be used to build the articles. :) The very good bright side is that somewhere around 90% of them so far have at least met the GNG if not better, and I am sure I will find more for most of the rest of those! After that, I am planning to go though the Reference Library pages I created and finding all the redlinked games, and then seeing which ones of those also meet the GNG to make a list of potential future articles! After that, I think I will resume working on CGW, so that will probably be sometime in February or March, possibly April.  :) BOZ (talk) 23:49, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Casus Belli (magazine) has a Latin name, but it is French in content.  ;) They focus largely on RPGs and other tabletop games, but like Games International they also reviewed some video games. :) BOZ (talk) 00:18, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jimmy, do you see anything that could help me address the notability tags on On the Campaign Trail, Operation Keystone (video game), and Paladin (video game)? BOZ (talk) 13:55, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In case you didn't see my ping, I posted something cool on the VG project talk page last week. :) BOZ (talk) 13:40, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I finally started back up a few weeks ago. :) Do you have anything more to add for Scavengers of the Mutant World? BOZ (talk) 00:47, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you're up and about, but I started The Battle of Britain 2 with only two reviews and redirected it from this version. Do you see anything else that would make it worth bringing back? BOZ (talk) 22:02, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for finding those reviews, that made my day. :) A more obscure one popped up in my watchlist today, do you see anything more for Clash of Wills? BOZ (talk) 10:23, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

RE: American Wikipedian seeking transcription help

Hello JimmyBlackwing. I saw the post you made in the Spanish version of the Videogame Wikiproject. I posted a transcript of part of the video (up until 4:07) below. I trust that ZebaX2010 can finish the transcript on Saturday and fill the gaps that I left (the parts I marked as unintelligible). Alejandro055 (talk) 22:20, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(Voiceover)

Looking for a review in EGM’s September 2004 issue

[edit]

Hey, I’m working on improving the article for ESPN NFL 2K5 and one of the major reviews I need for it is from EGM. The September 2004 issue should contain it, and the page lists you as the contact for that issue. Any way you can help me out with a scan? This is of specific interest because it’s a direct comparison to Madden NFL 2005, so if any of that is in there as well that’s great. Toa Nidhiki05 17:36, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the {{proposed deletion/dated}} tag from DSLink, which you proposed for deletion, because its deletion has previously been contested or viewed as controversial. Proposed deletion is not for controversial deletions. For this reason, proposed deletion is disallowed on articles that have previously been de-prodded, even by the page's creator, or which have previously been listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If you still think the article should be deleted, please don't add the {{proposed deletion}} template back to the article, but feel free to list it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks!

Hi Jimmy! Hope you've been well. :)

I wonder if you might be interested in collaborating on this article? The Learning Company (formerly SoftKey) is a central figure in the educational software market of the 90's, and its strategy of gobbling up all your favourite companies (MECC, Broderbund etc.) and dissolving them, then selling their financially-rocky business to Mattel for 3.6 billion only for the stock price to plummet (declared the worst business decision ever made), led to an industry without the resources wto make great products or investors brave enough to invest thanks to the Mattel deal.

All super interesting stuff. I have collected a bunch of juicy sources on the talk page and put them in chronological order. Oh, plus SoftKey was founded by Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary. What do you say?

SSI and AH

[edit]

I have started plenty of articles on games from the 80s in the last few months, but I feel like you and I may have overlapped most commonly on games from these two companies. I took at look at the list of games for each company, to see what games there did not yet have articles. Keeping in mind that both companies probably have games that were not listed on their Wikipedia pages so this is not a complete list, here are the ones that I did pull up, with additional reviews as I have found them:

Strategic Simulations:

Avalon Hill:

I will probably start a number of these at some point in the future, but I figured if you wanted to have a go at any of them in the meantime, there you go for inspiration.  :) BOZ (talk) 18:58, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help with a draft

[edit]

Hello there Jimmy boy! I hope you're doing well. Hey, i don't know if you're interested but i'm almost done with a draft i wanted to make since Gaelco's World Rally and that was a draft for its spiritual predecessor: Zigurat's Carlos Sainz: World Rally Championship. I found various reviews to establish notability but i'm not done yet, since i need to add five spanish interviews with its development team. Once i'm done with that part, you're welcomed to work on it and expand it further! (P.S.: Done with that, now you're welcomed to edit it!) Roberth Martinez (talk) 01:32, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you see anything more for Action in the North Atlantic (video game) and Battleship Bismarck: Operation Rhine - May 1941? BOZ (talk) 02:56, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I probably should have asked before redirecting it (although it can always be restored), but do you see anything more for The Battle of Britain 2 [125] ? Same goes for Galactic Frontiers, Macintosh game sources aren't as easy to find. BOZ (talk) 15:55, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • @BOZ: There's a Macworld review of the games Battle of Britain 2 and Bomber together, but honestly it's not clear that Battle of Britain 2 really exists. Based on the Macworld review, at least, it seems like a re-release of Battle of Britain, updated to version 2.1. I might be wrong on that. The best I could find on Galactic Frontiers was a mention in The Macintosh Bible Guide to Games, which is your safest bet whenever it comes to looking for material to bolster reception sections on old Mac games, in my experience. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 05:23, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, I think that bit in Macworld was part of a several-page ad for maybe a distributor named Tigersoft, so I doubt that I can use it. I did use that bit for Galactic Frontiers though, that could be useful. :) BOZ (talk) 12:10, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Daggerfall Release Date

[edit]
Daggerfall Release Date
JimmyBlackwing,

I'm sending this as both a "thank you" and a small request.

On 12 May 2018, you made a series of edits to the Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall page, some of which were to correct a longstanding error regarding the game's release date. When I was doing my own research about the game for my YouTube channel, Wikipedia is where I got the release date. It's thanks to you that I got it right in the first place, but then when I realized that almost everywhere else on the internet still believed the game came out on August 31, including Bethesda themselves, that set me on a journey to figure out for myself conclusively which date was correct, and also why the discrepancy existed at all. Your OGR and NEXT Generation citations were instrumental in pointing me in the right direction. A few months ago, I made and posted a video all about what I discovered, which has led to some of the principal sites and other individuals making the necessary correction themselves.

I am kicking myself to no end right now for not thinking to reach out to you earlier, because I just read your essay post on here about sourcing video game articles. I found it to be absolutely on-point with my own hard-learned lessons about navigating the murky waters of the internet circa the 90s and 00s. I really could have made use of the resources you listed, too, and saved myself a ton of time and difficulty.

Anyway, I'm writing a followup right now, and part of the reason I'm sending you this is to see if you'd be interested in providing some context. Would you happen to recall what led you to discovering the error yourself? Were you pursuing OGR on the Wayback Machine just for giggles one day and happened to notice the discrepancy? The research I did following the trail you started probably pales in comparison to whatever led you to the information. I'd also love to get your thoughts in general on the evolution of gaming news coverage on the internet, and why it's important to make sense of and preserve this information in the first place.

Please do get back to me if you're interested in discussing this further. We can continue the discussion here if you'd like, but email would probably be easier. My public-facing email is decadencenight49[at]gmail[dot]com

Regardless, thanks again just for doing good work here and being diligent about finding good sources, where a lot of people are content to do otherwise. DNDoubleNegative (talk) 22:03, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Daggerfall release date

[edit]

According to this [126] the game released on September 30, 1996 not September 20, 1996. Which source should we use here? Timur9008 (talk) 00:16, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

GamesMania seems to have just been late in its report. Multiple sources confirm that Daggerfall was already out by that time — see this Next Gen article from September 24 noting that the game had been released a few days before, and that 100,000 units had already been sold. Plus, Daggerfall hit PC Data's monthly chart for September at #4, which would've been impossible if GamesMania had been correct. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 03:39, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is a pretty fascinating find -- thanks for sending it my way. I don't edit much these days (too busy) but I still check regularly. I'll add it to the Daggerfall talk page. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 07:24, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
