(for context [this] will tell you why I came here). Also if possible try to be exceptionally strict while reviewing as I have plans to take this to FA later on and want to finish of any problems at this early stage. Thanks — Force Radical∞ ( TalkContribs ) 15:35, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Request for excerpt of Nintendo Official Magazine Issue #72

Hello there Jaguar,

I realized you've retired and might not see this but just in case you do go on Wikipedia any time soon:

I was wondering if I could get my hands on the seventy-second issue of Nintendo Official Magazine, specifically its Mario's Picross review? I'm trying to improve the article and you are listed as the contact for that specific issue on this page. The excerpt would help broaden the reception section as well as provide some references.

Please ping me if you read this. Thanks~

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

editToken

Hello Jaguar,

Your script User:Jaguar/monobook.js is no longer functional because it attempts to get an editToken from mw.user.tokens. The script should instead get a csrfToken. editTokens were removed from mw.user.tokens on October 3, 2019 at Phabricator during this edit as they were redundant to csrfTokens.BrandonXLF (talk) 00:06, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Sorry to keep starting new threads on your talk :P... but I wanted to ask you if you would be interested in potentially collaborating with me on this over the summer. I think the game needs to have a FA-quality article, but unfortunately the article as-is has deteriorated considerably since you got it promoted in 2015 (especially that gameplay section). I've started a draft at User:TheJoebro64/drafts/DKC to bring some glory back to Donkey Kong Island, and I think I might need some help from the Oracle of Rare himself. If you don't want to help it's fine, I just wanted to ask JOEBRO64 19:38, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Hey Joe, I'm glad you asked! I was actually looking over DKC a few days ago and was lamenting over its woeful condition. To be honest I was never happy with my contribution to it because so much more could have been added. It has deteriorated a lot since, you're right. I've always wanted to push it to FA and I'm sure our dream team could do just that. I finished my second year at university a few days ago (exams got cancelled) so for once I'll be totally free until September. I don't know if you saw me editing Rayman 2 - I always intended that to be my FA swansong before I left Wikipedia but never got around to it. It can wait though, I'll see if I can prepare some sources for DKC. I think it needs a total revamp. JAGUAR 20:27, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
Sounds good! I've mostly been gathering sources at this point and laying the groundwork; I've got a few tests to finish up myself, and then I've got to finish up the GAN for The Defenders (miniseries). But after that I'm totally ready. Also I really wanted to have an excuse to cite this Kotaku piece JOEBRO64 17:04, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Something that might make you angry.

https://www.engadget.com/2010-10-27-activision-and-nintendo-were-involved-in-rare-bidding-war.html

Apparently Nintendo almost completely acquired Rare. Pisses me off, if I'm being frank. JOEBRO64 02:33, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Jesus I had no idea. We could be living in an alternate timeline right now where we didn't get utter garbage like It's Mr Pants and Nintendo not be relegated for a decade. It's so melancholy... JAGUAR 21:09, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
Again, sorry to keep posting here... but another thing about the Microsoft acquisition that's pretty hard to believe. JOEBRO64 22:20, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
No need to apologise Joe. I wouldn't have been surprised if Microsoft thought they owned James Bond! I wonder what DK would have looked like on Xbox even if such a thing was plausible. To be fair it's a franchise Nintendo hasn't done much with since Rare was bought out. Sorry for the late response — I haven't been online this week but I haven't forgotten about DKC. I'll make a start on the development section tomorrow as more sources have been brought to our attention. Hope all is well, first the pandemic and now the unrest... JAGUAR 22:09, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Feel free to use the information that's on the draft page I started. Can't wait! JOEBRO64 22:12, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Notice

The file File:Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free album cover being used in a decorative manner in Super Mario Galaxy#Music. Non-free album cover art is generally allowed to be used for primary identification purposes in stand-alone articles about albums, but its use in other articles is generally only allowed when the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3 and the context for non-free use required by WP:NFCC#8 is evident. There is no such commentary for this particular album cover anywhere in the article, which means there's no real justification for the non-free use of this file.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:00, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

That makes me worry, that was the whole point of my message. You shouldn't be changing it to harv at all, not without consensus to change the established citation style. Please reverse course, harv is not the established style and is certainly uncommon and atypical in the video game space. -- ferret (talk) 21:22, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
I wasn't aware? I've done the same in other VG articles, and me and Joebro recently converted refs to harv at DKC. I've always preferred it personally as it feels more 'encyclopaedic' if you know what I mean. JAGUAR 21:26, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
You weren't aware that HARV was not the established style in PlayStation? Or that it's not typically used on video game articles (it's not)? Or that CITEVAR, which I just linked, existed? Either way, I'm expressing opposition as I feel it's absolutely worse for readers, in that you have to make extra clicks to get to the reference, as well as doubling the amount of space taken up references, especially on mobile. -- ferret (talk) 21:32, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
I wasn't aware that the Harvard style was discouraged on video games articles (or any topic for that matter). To be fair I've been away for so long my familiarity with guidlines has dulled a bit. In the case of the PlayStation article most of the sources I will be using will derive from magazines, journals and a few books I own. In this case I would prefer Harvard as it's more versatile with referencing prints and there's the benefit of having the works in alphabetical order. Should I raise this on the talk page before I proceed with the rewrite? JAGUAR 21:40, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
What exactly is your goal in switching to Harv? How does it make referencing more versatile? Also you should be aware of Wikipedia:HARVARD which was just depreciated this month. -- ferret (talk) 21:49, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
It was text-based parenthetical citations that was depreciated, was it not? Quite certain I've never seen them on Wikipedia before. Anyway I don't have a goal or anything, I just think harv refs are more precise in referencing specific pages and are more suited for in-depth articles, which PlayStation is (or should be soon). I'll see what others think. Maybe university swayed me. JAGUAR 22:10, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
Are you familiar with {{rp}} for specifying pages on "normal" refs? Which will soon (tm) be integrated into the ref tag itself. -- ferret (talk) 22:13, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
No. That looks good. Wish it was integrated a long time ago. JAGUAR 22:21, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
If your goal is to have all the citations in one place, rather than buried in the wikitext all over, look at how Space Run (which you reviewed!) was done. You can do that with normal references. {{rp}} will let you specify a page where needed, and in the near (tm) future, you'll be able to do it directly on the tag. Switching to that style also technically requires a consensus, but I'd support that. -- ferret (talk) 22:28, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
  • It's common to use {{sfn}} and a dedicated Bibliography/Sources section when expanding/sourcing an article that has more page references than web links. As long as it's part of expansion/rewrite to make the citations easier to read (i.e., not a drive-by for cosmetics), as long as it meets the needs when discussed with the page's other editors, I've never seen it to be an issue. If an article's notes are 80% web links, though, you probably don't need to convert the whole thing to harv notation, but can use a hybrid (similar to how it is at this moment, only using short footnotes for the items that cite books, whose full citations are in a separate section). But for the love of Jimbo anything but {{rp}}, which makes citations even more obtuse for readers. By the way, the recent RfC wasn't deprecating harv notation but in-line notation. Harv notation is the standard for short footnotes. czar 09:12, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
That's what I thought czar, I've always used {{sfn}} for a dedicated bibliography and the short footnotes will make it easier for me and the reader. Just tried out {{rp}} in a sandbox and think it clutters the prose. I suppose I'll carry on with what I'm doing but won't convert it all to harv, only the books/journals. Similar to what I last did with Super Mario World. JAGUAR 11:28, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
Expanding bibligraphy for new books and journals would likely not have caught my eye. My opposition stems for web cites being converted one by one from the existing reference style to Harv. That said, I continue to believe Harv is more harmful to readers in a general sense. My thoughts on that are on the talk page. -- ferret (talk) 13:54, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello Sir

My Name Is Omar, An Editor on Arabic wikipedia! This Is My First Time writing a message to Someone From Other lang Wikipedia. I could not help but admire your page, and also wonder about your interests that are very similar to me, as well as the very similar birthdate, as I was born on January 27, 1996 I would like to get to know you better or talk to you about a topic! عمر أنور (talk) 01:18, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Omar, it is nice to hear from you. It is interesting that our birthdates are quite similar! 1996 was a good year. My interests range from history to ships and geography. What are yours? I have also learned a bit about the Arabian region from my studies. JAGUAR 01:45, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

I'm So Glad That You Replied, As For My Interests Is Basically History (Medieval and Older), and Ships (ww1 and ww2 and little bit of older era), Also a little Bit Of Technology (Programing Mostly As I'm Also a C# Programer and a), Right Now I Have No Interest In Geography (0 knowledge). Right Now I'm Working On this article, and i see you are working on playstation article, witch is on list.عمر أنور (talk) 14:35, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Naval ships are one of the best covered areas on the English Wikipedia. You've made a good start! Looking at articles in other languages is a good way to collect more sources. I've never written about ships before but I usually work on things I find interesting. I'm also interested in general technology but don't think I could write about those topics. I plan to work on some biographies next, if my university studies don't draw me away... JAGUAR 23:50, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Super Mario World scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that Super Mario World has been scheduled as WP:TFA for 21 November 2020. Please check that the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 21, 2020. Thanks! Ealdgyth (talk) 15:04, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article, introduced: "I spent a fair amount of time nurturing this article ... It was quite shocking to see how much little coverage this game got despite its magnitude and apparent status as the "greatest platform game of all time" ... Thankfully I've learned from past mistakes and have corrected my habits for over-complicating things. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:54, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

Thank you Gerda. I hope you are keeping well. JAGUAR 18:46, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
Fairly well, thank you, see my talk. How about you? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:08, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
I've been OK thank you Gerda. Bogged down with my studies unfortunately, though I wish the lockdown will end once and for all. What was on your talk page? JAGUAR 22:20, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
Much more detail than I'd like to repeat here. On top a work by BB (Benjamin Britten), on his birthday, - a little ritual of mine since his centenary in 2013. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:33, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Stane Street GAN

Hi Jaguar,
I’m contacting you as you are a member of WikiProject:Surrey and you are an experienced Good Article reviewer. Over the past few months, I’ve been working on Stane Street (Chichester) and have just nominated it as a Good Article candidate (having been encouraged to do so by a couple of fellow editors). Would you willing to take a look at it please?
Thanks Mertbiol (talk) 12:39, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi Mertbiol. It's been a while since I looked at a local article. I've taken the review and will read through the article later today. ♦ jaguar 13:51, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:PlayStation Mouse profile.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:PlayStation Mouse profile.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 01:05, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

Dorking GAN

Hi Jaguar,
I’m not sure if you remember, but you very kindly reviewed Stane Street (Chichester) just before Christmas. Since then I’ve been working on Dorking (in Surrey) and have just nominated it as a Good Article candidate. (I have received a lot of useful input from a number of fellow editors, so I hope the article is in good shape.) Would you be willing to take a look at it please?
Thanks and best wishes, Mertbiol (talk) 09:07, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Mertbiol. No problem, I'll leave some comments within a couple of days. It's always a pleasure to review a local GAN, although I can't remember the last time I went to Dorking! ♦ jaguar 16:49, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks @Jaguar: I look forward to your comments! Best wishes, Mertbiol (talk) 17:03, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diligence
It's been a hot while since you've been recognized for your constant peer assistance and community work for your GANs. This is to let you know that your hard work is recognized and deeply appreciated. Panini🥪 00:52, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you Panini! To be honest the amount of GANs I've reviewed hasn't sunk in yet. It's been a couple of years since I've had nominated a video game GAN myself - although I've got so much planned it's difficult to get back into it after so much inactivity. ♦ jaguar 01:21, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

GA request

Hi Jaguar; good to see you back and hope you're well! Would you be willing to pick up my nom of Al Capone? I have a couple others I'd also like you to take a look at later, but this one is the biggy, first. Thanks. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 20:56, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Vaselineeeeeeee. I'll open the GAN. I'm a bit burdened with work at the moment so I should leave comments within two days. ♦ jaguar 22:59, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Jaguar. When you are able, please take a look at my nom of Rocco Perri—similar read as Capone, but a bit shorter :). Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 20:29, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for doing this. I don't mind the delays, and hope reading these articles offers some sort of 'study break' for you :). I haven't nominated these yet, but was thinking to get you to take a look at Johnny Papalia, Vito Rizzuto and finally the longer one John Gotti. If you think it's too much work for you right now, I can always nominate them later, but as you like this topic I thought I'd set them aside for you when you're up for it. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 00:54, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@Vaselineeeeeeee: It was a welcome break from racking my brains over essay writing, though I must admit some GANs have the same effect! I should be more free in a couple of days, so if you would nominate them I'll take them. I've always had a passing interest in the Mafia, some of my favourite films are those from that genre. ♦ jaguar 01:18, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
Awesome, same here, of course! Done, thanks! Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 01:24, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
